If your loveseat sustains itself on a diet of channel changers, Harishankar Narayanan's Kinect hack is right up your alley: Using the peripheral and a Universal Infrared Receiver Transmitter, any ol' couch potato can turn their body into a remote that's virtually impossible to misplace.
Continue reading Kinect Hacks: The futuristic, unloseable remote

Kinect Hacks: The futuristic, unloseable remote originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Feb 2011 21:30:00 EST. We've never written about the Parrot AR.Drone on our humble news site because we've yet to see its applications in the gaming space. Don't get us wrong -- it's as inherently awesome as you'd expect a hovering, camera-equipped drone (that's controlled by your iPhone!) to be. However, "random things that are awesome" doesn't really align with our editorial purview.

At GDC, Parrot went to great lengths to show off the gaming applications of the Drone. A representative presented two tech demos to us, both of which use the device's front-mounted camera to recognize "tags" in the environment, creating augmented reality overlays which allow the user to virtually interact with an object. In layman's terms: It recognizes predetermined patterns, and turns them into virtual targets, at which you can then shoot virtual bullets and missiles.
Speaking to a room full of executives focused on "the business of online video" at this year's Streaming Media West trade show, it's easy to understand how Xbox Live GM Marc Whitten could fall into hyperbole regarding the implications of Project Natal. "I believe that this will be the largest leap of TV experience since the remote control," Whitten said on the subject, reports Yahoo Tech. "With the flick of my wrist I can change a channel ... with the power of my voice I can start a movie."

Aside from the more obvious implications to television using technology that can interpret voice and motion, he sees a future where Natal will recognize individual voices in a room and allow for a variety of human input - from "laughter" to "the number of people in a room" and everything in between. "Watching a movie is a passive input, but a TV should understand what you're trying to do." We don't know about you, Marc, but we're a bit worried about the implications of our television understanding what some of us are trying to do.
The car is equipped with a camera that feeds video back to the PSP. One possible application: "a user may control the car... so as to spy on their friends... then upload the stored video images to a website."

In addition, the patent application states that the car could be used for an "augmented reality" racing game in which the game recognizes real objects as elements in the racing game. Basically, you build your own track from stuff around the house.

The only thing we can't figure out about this patent is why it's not a real product yet. Why is nobody selling us this right now? If Sony really wants the PSP to succeed, here's how to do it. A pink PSP and a Hannah Montana game aren't going to be any significant competition for the DS. But a remote-controlled spy car is, because that is awesome.
Sony patents tiny PSP-controlled spy car originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 12:40:00 EST. Got a Blackberry? If you do, then you could turn that smartphone into a cheap and practical solution to some of PS3s peripheral needs. Unity4Life's Games|Shadow will turn your phone into a remote control for both DVD and Blu-ray playback features, as well as turn it into a keypad for internet browsing or other text-heavy inputs.

The add-on for the phone costs $39.99 and will be available this upcoming April. At that price, it's a rather attractive option as opposed to going for the official wireless keypad which costs $10 more (with no remote control features either). Check out Games|Shadow in action after the break.

[Thanks KidQwik!]
Continue reading Use your Blackberry as a PS3 remote and keypad

Use your Blackberry as a PS3 remote and keypad originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 07:30:00 EST. According to initial impressions of the recently launched (in Japan) channel, however, there's a lot more to it!

Users can rate shows, share their favorite shows with friends, and mark their favorite programs to receive email/text alerts a half hour before they begin ... in Japan.

The coolest feature we've heard about, though, is the ability to use the Wii remote as a universal remote control. Wii owners can use the controller to change channels, adjust the volume, and switch back and forth between their shows and the TV Guide Channel.
