Sony mentioned during their conference that sales at all their major resalers had doubled already and it looks like they weren't kidding -- Amazon just ran out of their entire stock of PlayStation 3s and aren't getting anything until next week. Normally, stocking issues is more of a Wii phenomenon but it looks like a lot of people were either waiting in baited anticipation for the price cut, or a lot of people are scared Sony is going to jack the price of the PS3 back up to 600 dollars later this year.

Interestingly, sales of the PlayStation 3 have been so strong that its pushed the Amazon special pack-in movie Resident Evil into the top 5 movie sellers across all formats, including DVDs. That's something that even top tier Blu-ray releases can rarely do for even a couple days, and Resident Evil has been holding there all week. Since it's pretty unlikely that an older Blu-ray disc would undergo such a resurrection in sales by itself, that alone indicates that the PS3 sales have been extremely good at Amazon. With great games finally coming out and a decent library starting to form, this is a good time to be a new PS3 owner -- but how long will the sales spike last? Until the only option is a $599 80GB PS3?

*UPDATE*
Looks like they got an early new shipment of PS3s and they're back in stock at Amazon. Go get your buy on!

*UPDATE 2*
Holy crap, they just ran out of stock again. People REALLY want their PS3s, don't they?

[Via N4G]
PlayStation 3 sells out at Amazon, nothing until next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 08:00:00 EST. This week, we've got a super spooky treat for all of you fright fans: a chiller from the masters of horror at Capcom, called "The Evil Residents and the Umbrella," about a town full of arthritic pedestrians terrorized by a group of militaristic, gun-wielding murderers! We're sure you'll have such a screaming good time that the name "Residence of Evil" will haunt you for years to come!

[Via Famitsu]
New Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles movie originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 09:50:00 EST. They are taking their sweet time (and probably relying on the attractive Devil May Cry 4 to boost sales a bit) to make sure we're getting the best product starring Chris Redfield we can get. In fact, Capcom must really love that poster boy -- he's been in the most games. The original (which we'll count as the fantastic GameCube remake), Code: Veronica and now this. However, poster boy #2, Leon Kennedy, stars in the best games of the series -- the second and fourth. Debate all you like.

Capcom released some financial reports and guess what game isn't listed on this fiscal calendar's release schedule? Yep, Resident Evil 5. This means we can expect to do the business with the zombies and whatnot around April of next year. At the earliest. Every single game just seems to get farther and farther from release! Eventually, developers might just shrug their shoulders and say "well, we just don't want to release games anymore." We kid, of course, but the waiting game is so boring.
Resident Evil 5 before April 2008 seems very unlikely originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jun 2007 15:00:00 EST. Turns out it's just one Gamecube! Either that or Capcom is lazy. The evidence to support either conclusion is found in this Gametrailers video, which compares the Gamecube and Wii versions of Resident Evil 4 side-by-side. Major spoiler: they look exactly the same.

The sad part is, we actually don't know if the Wii can do better graphics than the original Resident Evil 4, because nobody has tried. Well, at least this version of RE4 has waggling. And it's not like the graphics were bad on the Cube or anything.
Continue reading Resident Evil 4 comparison puts "two Gamecubes taped together" to rest

Resident Evil 4 comparison puts "two Gamecubes taped together" to rest originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jun 2007 12:35:00 EST. Unlike previous Resident Evil spinoff games, this one seems like it's going to be okay.

They were especially pleased with the treatment of the story-- since the Resident Evil series has traditionally had a good story element, this game has a leg up over other zombie-filled shooting games. Nobody will have to suffer like G did.

The Nunchuk use also received praise-- being able to look around freely with the joystick just lets you do more in each area, allowing the players to search for hidden items, aim shots more accurately, and choose paths.

Resident Evil: Impressions Chronicles originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 May 2007 17:35:00 EST. The score is an average of four editors' score: two gave the title a 9, while two gave the game a perfect score of 10.

What's key to this review that Nintendo should be thanking Capcom for is how the editors laud the control system as easy to get into and making the game feel fresh and new. According to IGN, one reviewer noted that "game offers the feeling of being closer to the action as well as upping the tension," while another remarked that those who have played the game before will find something to enjoy.

Such words echo back to Nintendo's mantra of offering gamers something new and exciting, and this game seems to showcase that much like the GameCube version showcased a more mature, visually appealing side to that console. Now how about we see Capcom incorporate the control scheme for a future Wii title?

Resident Evil 4 for Wii is coming out May 31 in Japan. and June 19 in North America with a price well below standard Wii releases.
Famitsu gives Resident Evil 4 Wii a 9.5 out of 10 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 May 2007 19:18:00 EST. Forget the European Resident Evil 4 box. This Japanese Biohazard box is the business.

For 3,675 yen, which is a suspiciously low $30, you get an awesome 20-DVD-capacity Umbrella Corporation biohazard storage box (itself inside an Umbrella Corporation shipping box), two keys, warning tags, and caution tape to seal it up. For a little comparison shopping, here's the full intro to the Nintendo DS version.

While the GBC version is pretty much what you'd expect, the GBA version looks pretty darn good. Sadly, development was later canceled on both of these. It makes you wonder what else is out there that almost made it. We're usually only able to see the final versions of games, and some of them shouldn't have made it that far.
Take a look at dead Game Boy versions of Resident Evil originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 16:56:00 EST. This is the boxart for the European release of Resident Evil 4. It's basically the PAL PS2 boxart, but white instead of red.

We are now totally okay with the tacked-on waggle controls, and the fact that it's a Wii port of a game that is two years old and can already be played on Wii, because it's got really nice boxart. We're not even being sarcastic. Too bad about the "Wii Edition" thing, but we'll look past that. So what's your opinion? Our first reaction is to be outraged. We love our system and we love Silent Hill and its atmospheric, psychological horror storytelling.

But would we actually love them together? The larger question here extends beyond the boundaries of one foggy town: is the DS an appropriate format for survival horror? We had one outing already in Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, which a very trustworthy source tells us wasn't an entirely successful experiment.

Alternately, if the major discussion topic doesn't interest you, we can just talk about Silent Hill and how great it is.
DS Daily: Survival horror originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST. Thanks, SnesR0X, and no thanks to the many similar DS-game subtitles!]

It's been a while since we had a directed blurry-Famitsu-picture staredown, and this one is, as usual, totally worth staring at. Famitsu printed a long-awaited look at Capcom's Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, the Wii-exclusive RE-series-spanning game.

According to the article, it's a first-person gun shooting game with playable characters from past REs including Chris, Jill, Wesker, and others. Whether it's a true FPS or an on-rails affair like Resident Evil: Dead Aim remains to be seen.

Also in Famitsu was confirmation that Resident Evil 4 is getting an enhanced Wii release. Rumor has it that all the PS2 extras will be included, but the only definite is an added Wiimote-controlled knife mode. However, true to Nintendo's focus elsewhere, the list of games that use 480p / 16:9 widescreen is currently pretty small. Though the Wii, as Nintendo presents it, is a system that prioritizes interaction over graphical proficiency, the system is at least as powerful as two GameCubes duct taped together (we kid, we kid).

We expect the graphics of the games to reflect the console's ability and would like to see those visuals in as crisp an image as possible, whether the game in question is realistic or comical in presentation. We hope Capcom's decision is just part of a larger trend of future Wii releases. It is unknown if Umbrella Chronicles, currently scheduled for a late 2007 release, will be present at Capcom's Gamers Day event April 12.
Resident Evil Wii will be seen in 480p, 16:9 glory originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Mar 2007 20:36:00 EST. Anderson (of Resident Evil and AVP) is off the Castlevania film slated for 2009. There's no word yet on who might take over in his place. We can only guess what horrors the studio might have in store for us next. We're not too fussed; this blogger, at least, was way more interested in this other project anyway. Movie adaptations of video games are just risky and almost never work out as well as we could hope. Is it too much to dream that perhaps the Castlevania movie will just disappear? We'll most likely hear plenty of news concerning the recently announced 360 version of Devil May Cry 4, but we may be in store for some Resident Evil news as well. A concerned poster by the name of Drdark on the Capcom message boards made known his desire to see some news about the upcoming PS3 and 360 Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for Wii. Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson responded to Drdark saying, "You may be slightly pleased and slightly disappointed then."

While the fanboys inside beg us to shout out that Resident Evil 5 news is on the way, we have to agree with 1UP that Svensson is probably referring to Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii (especially considering RE5 could easily be a 2008 title). For now though, it can't hurt to dream.

[Via 1UP]
Resident Evil 5 news next month? So says Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, posting on the official Capcom forums in the midst of a Devil May Cry outcry. When asked by fans whether the company's new mulitplatform strategy would extend to their pair of successful Xbox 360 titles, Svensson explains that "Dead Rising and Lost Planet are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3," noting that the reasons for the continued exclusivity "are quite convoluted" and are bound by a slew of suspicious non-disclosure agreements.

He goes on to say that Capcom's current approach -- which sees Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4 coming to both PS3 and Xbox 360 -- is for future titles and isn't meant to be applied in a "retroactive" manner. Of course, this comes just days after Svensson used the forum to respond to sulking petitioners and their disdain for Devil May Cry gracing multiple platforms.

"We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes," he said in a seperate thread. "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers."

Apparently, Dead Rising and Lost Planet simply missed the multiplatform boat.
Christian Svenssen, Capcom's Senior Director of Strategic Planning & Research, caused some rumblings when he referenced the kiddie image in a forum post on the Capcom forums.

The controversial quote: "If there is a 'core player base' on Wii (and it's [sic] might be so broad, there might be no such thing as 'core'), within two years, it will probably be largely a younger player (or at least younger than 360 or PS3)." Despite the best efforts of the Nintendo Defense Force, we're inclined to agree that, by merit of taking a family-focused approach to marketing, children will likely be given this as a first console or as a system that parents feel they can enjoy with their offspring.

However, Svenssen is quick to remind forum readers that, in announcing their strive for a broad focus, mature does not equate to broadly appealing, which in turn is not necessarily "kiddie." On the fourth page of the thread, Svensson notes that Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles may not be the only M-rated title to be released on the Wii from Capcom ("One never knows what our teams in Japan will cook up down the road," he remarks), but that the likelihood is dependent upon the success of other M-rated titles on the console. Some M-rated titles we know coming up include Manhunt 2 and Suda 51's No More Heroes.
Continue reading Capcom talks M-rated games on the Wii

Capcom talks M-rated games on the Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 23:17:00 EST. Coupled with the second best-selling franchise Pokémon (also a Nintendo property), the two series, which have sold a combined 348 million games worldwide, account for nearly 34% of the total sales of the top-twenty best-selling franchises; which include two additional Nintendo IPs ranked in the top ten, Donkey Kong and Zelda. So what's Nintendo's secret?

Cross-culture appeal, spin-offs (e.g., racers, sports titles, puzzlers), brand saturation (e.g., apparel, card games, TV shows), and E-ratings all appear part of a profitable formula built for the long haul.
Continue reading Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability

Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 18:23:00 EST. Feel free to check in, and comment, every Tuesday.

Resident Evil 4
To kick-start this feature, I decided to shoot for the stars. Resident Evil 4 is without a doubt one of the finest games created in the last generation. The game completely reinvented the Resident Evil formula, placing the camera behind the game's protagonist, Leon, freeing the player from the notorious tank-like controls the series was infamous for. With its chilling enemies and brilliant gameplay, the game earned an impressive 96 average on Metacritic.

Why PSP?
Resident Evil 4's behind-the-back perspective removes one of the greatest frustrations of most PSP action games: the lack of camera control. The Gamecube original rarely utilized the second analog stick, simply because it was unnecessary. The game's intuitive controls come from its simplicity: a single button controls much of the action that you'll need. Resident Evil 4 was one of the few games that ran in widescreen only last generation, making the PSP's 16:9 display even more ideal.

Is it possible?
Although the controls may be well suited for the PSP, the game's technological requirements may mean this game will never see the light on our system. Capcom did an incredible job squeezing this game onto a PlayStation 2, and I doubt that their technical mojo would fail on the PSP. If a port of this fine game isn't being made, hopefully the PSP will see an original Resident Evil of its own: one that uses the same, elegant control scheme used by Resident Evil 4. And if we don't get Resident Evil, at least we can look forward to Silent Hill.
Dream Games: Resident Evil 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Jan 2007 11:10:00 EST. In an interview with Lost Planet Community's Brian Dunn, Cutscene Director Yoshiyuki Tonoe and Director Kenji Oguro discussed the differences between how cutscenes are used in Western and Eastern gaming worlds. Their decision to use real-time cutscenes in Lost Planet stems from their research into how Western developers tended to tell the story within the game engine, whereas Japanese developers typically rely on CG graphics for the cinematic storytelling.

Tonoe dates the Eastern obsession with CG cutscenes to the original Biohazard (released March 1996), though arguably Square Enix had already begun to look into CG before the horror title's release with Final Fantasy VII, whose long development process began in 1995. "The latest CG movies found in games are stunning and really help sell the game," said Tonoe, "but when I think about how they are used to tie the story to the gameplay, I wonder if they are effective at making the games any better."

Pictured are some of the games used as reference material during Lost Planet's development. Tonoe cites The Lord of the Rings games, whose cutscenes were amalgamations of movie footage and in-game footage, as "above what Japanese developers were doing at the time."

Specific to their game, Tonoe remarks that there are 33 cutscenes in Lost Planet, totaling 73 minutes, averaging just under three minutes with the longest cutscene at around six minutes in length. What's your preference -- explosive CG eye candy or more immersive real-time storytelling?

[Via 1UP]
CG cutscenes and gaming culture originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Jan 2007 14:55:00 EST. Now, as this is a list from the UK, they've included some games with which we American gamers have already been blessed, but the rest of the lineup is interesting indeed. Of course, they highlight Wario Ware: Smooth Moves (we so can't wait for that), but the lion's share of the list goes to the most obvious -- and long in coming -- games for the Wii, like Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy (and the less talked about, but also cool Disaster: Day of Crisis). Of course these are going to be great games, but on what shall we pin all our hopes and dreams between now and the oblivion of year's end? It hurts to see so many great games on this list when we know they have no firm release date. Reggie promised us that there'd be no drought, but things are looking a little dry from the vantage point of this list. Potentially awesome, yes, but a little dry all the same.
The good, the bad, and the OHGODWHEN originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Jan 2007 14:50:00 EST. According to Famitsu Xbox, via GameFront, passed along by GamersReports, Capcom won't release the next Resident Evil until 2008, stalled in part by an effort to get the game running at 60 fps.

While the game will attempt greater environmental interactivity, more interestingly, Resident Evil 5 will allegedly feature hot and cold weather changes, affecting certain (unspecified) gameplay mechanics (possibly dehydration, frostbite, etc.). Developers are also focusing on enhancing character models, including facial muscles capable of a full range of expression, and realistic hair and skin rendering.
Resident Evil 5 plays hot & cold originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Dec 2006 00:25:00 EST. The document clearly refers to Extinction as "the third and final installment" of Paul W.S. Anderson's misbegotten master work. Of course, as Sly is again proving this holiday, some franchises just don't stay down.

Don't be surprised when, after completing his Castlevania interpretation, Anderson brews up another Resident Evil sequel.

[Thanks, Sean]

See also: Third Resident Evil film to be buried in desert
Resident Evil films to culminate in 'Extinction' ... or not originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Dec 2006 15:55:00 EST.
While I do appreciate the effort, these new Killzone: Liberation commercials remind me too much of the original Resident Evil intro - both are chock full of bad acting. Thankfully, the game seems to be a lot better than these commercials.

But thanks to Sony's PS1 emulation feature, you'll soon be able to replay Resident Evil on the go.

Japan will have 9 games available at its launch:

Bio Hazard Director's Cut (Resident Evil)

BishiBashi Special

Everyone's Golf 2

Jumping Flash!

Konami Antiques MSX Collection Vol.1

Konami Antiques MSX Collection Vol.2

Mister Driller

Silent Bomber

Tekken 2

Strangely, no Ridge Racer (it was the first game to show off PSone emulation on the PSP). My personal picks have to be Resident Evil and Mister Driller (if the same games come out to America). According to Eurogamer, Sony plans on adding ten more games to the roster every month. That's about twice the content provided by Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays.

[Via Joystiq]
Resident Evil heads to PSP in November (via PSone emulation) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Oct 2006 17:25:00 EST. As Capcom prepares to usher in the next-generation, the company has elected to do some last-minute house cleaning, shoeing a pile of its prized current-gen titles out the door. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise and the 5th anniversary of the Devil May Cry franchise, Capcom has prepared two budget-priced collections:

For GameCube: Resident Evil, Resident Evil Zero & Resident Evil 4 ($40, exclusively at EB Games/GameStop)

For PlayStation 2: Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 & Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition ($30)

The two gems of these collections are Resident Evil 4 and the original Devil May Cry. That said, unless you're looking to round out your archives, there are better ways to invest in Capcom product. You tried Okami yet?
Perhaps you noticed that there was absolutely no Resident Evil 5 information revealed at TGS -- not even a peep. This has led some to speculate that somebody -- Microsoft -- has secured the exclusive rights to the game. What's more, the head honcho of 360 Japan, Takashi Sensui, gave a tantalizing reply when questioned directly about the issue:

"All I can say is we are very good friends with Mr. Inafune."

As any good Fanboy already knows, Mr. (Keiji) Inafune is the producer behind Resident Evil 5 as well as the runaway smash hit, Dead Rising. Wait a minute, Scooby. Didn't we run a story last month about Capcom ending PS3 exclusives as a result of Dead Rising's high sales numbers? And Lost Planet looks like it could be pretty big, too. Hmmm, this RE5 exclusivity business just might have some legs after all. If only there were some huge convention where Capcom and Microsoft could reveal such a bombshell, somewhere in Europe. Spain perhaps.

[Thanks, The1]

Update: It looks like Capcom has officially shot this rumor down. Speaking with CVG, a spokesperson said, "Resident Evil 5 will release on PS3 and Xbox 360 as announced. There a no plans for an exclusive with the game." Oh, well. At least we know it won't be exclusive for that other console either. An overarching story about everyone's favorite zombie-producing conglomerate. And we're getting that (in a sense), but it turns out that we've been fooled ... here, "umbrella" means "that which covers all" and chronicles seems to stand for "a little rehash of a lot of story."

That's right, folks -- the so-exciting ReWii may not be that exciting after all. Instead of an all new game or a straight up remake, Umbrella Chronicles will feature four chapters that recover old ground from games 1-4, and some Wiimote functionality has been tossed in like a drizzle of chocolate atop a subpar sundae.

While it will no doubt be interesting to see the long and winding story of Umbrella told in this fashion, it still feels like a copout. Capcom is throwing us a bone so that we remain dedicated to their series. Where's our game? Where's our chance to blast all new zombie heads? If we get it, it won't be soon. For now, we'll cling to the old idea that good things come to those who wait. But if they make us wait too long, we may be storming Capcom ala the torchbearing villagers in RE4.

[Via Joystiq]

[Update: The teaser trailer has hit the net and is after the break.]
Continue reading Umbrella Chronicles aptly named [update 1]

Umbrella Chronicles aptly named [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Sep 2006 13:17:00 EST. This isn't to be confused with the third RE movie, "Extinction". The fourth is "Afterlife". The fifth is "Overkill". Just kidding, there's no fifth. Yet. Do we really need a fourth? Do we really need a third? Maybe. Even though the movies horribly destroy everything the games stand for, they must be popular somewhere to be getting a third and fourth iteration. Let's just hope we get Resident Evil 5 to wash the bad taste out of our mouths between these movies.

This Ackles guy is supposed to be pretty good. Honestly, we've never seen him in his show "Supernatural". Some say he fits the bill of a Leon Kennedy. But let's be honest -- he won't be a Leon. Leon is way too cool for that. What? Leon's not real? Hogwash. Hey, how about this: in the third and fourth Resident Evil movies, what would you want to see? It can be a scene from one of the games, it can be something you wish was done better (mansion exploration would have been cool)... or it could be Milla Jovovich getting obliterated by a thermonuclear explosion. Hey, we'll need Leon to have the spotlight. Move over, "Alice".
Resident Evil 4 -- the movie... at least it has Leon? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Sep 2006 11:30:00 EST. Here's what we do know, and it's not much: the game is categorized as "action" (you don't say) and Kawada Masachika, who handled the port of Resident Evil 4 from the 'Cube to the PS2, will be the lead producer. The game also appeared briefly in the Wii preview video that we've been cooing over all day.

There are a lot of rumors flying around about the game, naturally. Some people think it's at least a partial remake of the remake of the original Resident Evil (that's a lot of remaking). There's word of an established voice actress lending her pipes to Jill Valentine. And some people say it may even -- wait for it -- have some zombies. Now that's news.

Speculate your fanboy hearts out and we'll bring you information as it comes.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this one in!]
ReWii confirmed as Umbrella Chronicles originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Sep 2006 12:45:00 EST. It's 12:01AM EST... you know what that means! Time for a SUPER-BIG-UPDATE. In fact, it's so big, that I actually have no idea what's going on. This news article shows pictures of Resident Evil on the PSP, but it's written in a complex code that only YOU can break! Or, did we stumble upon a silly prank?
Mysterious Resident Evil video surfaces originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Sep 2006 00:01:00 EST. PSP Fanboy once wrote: "So how about a port of Resident Evil 4? The new over-the-shoulder camera style would be perfect for the handheld!"

Well, we might not have Resident Evil yet, but it looks like Silent Hill Origins will fit the bill just nicely. This first gameplay video (delivered by Playstation Portable.de) leaked from the floors of the Games Convention in Germany doesn't show off any enemies, but it shows some particularly nice graphics (the fog looks great), atmosphere and familiar controls. Hopefully we'll discover more nuggets of gameplay over the course of the convention, so keep it locked in to the Fanboy.

[Update 1: According to PSP World, the game will offer "a cinematic experience comparable to the previous games, but framed within interactive moments." That sounds a lot like Resident Evil 4's button-mashing cutscenes to me.]

[Via IGN Boards]
Silent Hill Origins gameplay footage [Update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Aug 2006 10:00:00 EST.
