The shivering mass exposed at the summit of this week's charts is <em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em>. While last year's 3DS game debuted in sixth, its PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC port takes advantage of all its new platforms to knock <em>Metro: Last Light</em> off the top, and provide yet another new No. 1 in the UK.<br />
<br />
<em>Last Light</em> continues to flicker in third, with charts mainstay <em>FIFA 13</em> no doubt climbing to second thanks to some timely price promotion. It was a soccer-packed weekend in the UK, with the final of the Champions League taking place in Wembley, London. This led to a certain, <em>spirited</em> German fan dozing on the shoulder of a certain Joystiq editor on a certain early morning bus ride home. Repeatedly. And drippily.<br />
<br />
Moving on, the other new entry in this week's top ten is <em>Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, </em>which surpasses the Wii version's best-ever placement of seventh; the 3DS port debuts in fifth. Further down the charts, Activision's <em>Fast and Furious: Showdown</em> tie-in<em> </em>screeches into a debut position of 14th.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/28/resident-evil-revelations-proclaims-top-spot-in-this-weeks-uk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Resident Evil: Revelations proclaims top spot in this week's UK charts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/28/resident-evil-revelations-proclaims-top-spot-in-this-weeks-uk/">Resident Evil: Revelations proclaims top spot in this week's UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 May 2013 08:00:00 EST. The 3DS is no graphical slouch. Aside from the glasses-free 3D feature, the system can kick out some impressive scenery, and it did so with last year's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil Revelations</em></a>, a well-made little horror shooter in a series that's been looking for a lifeboat lately. After launching <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-6"><em>Resident Evil 6</em></a> fewer than six months ago, Capcom seems to think HD platforms need even more <em>Resident Evil</em> love, and so this week <em>Revelations</em> hits Xbox 360, PS3, Windows PCs, and the Wii U.<br />
<br />
Playing it in enhanced form on an HD console, however, feels just a little goofy. The textures do look excellent, but the game's models are clearly made for a more lightweight graphics engine, which means you get characters with hair frozen in place and enemies with just a few animations to use over and over again. <em>Revelations</em> was made for a handheld machine, and its designers cut corners that the other platforms would have let them curve around more gracefully.<br />
<br />
But <em>Revelations</em>' saving grace is that it's a Resident Evil game, and it's a good Resident Evil game at that. For that reason, fans of the series who missed out the first time around will probably appreciate the chance to see it for themselves.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/">Resident Evil: Revelations (5/20/13)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894254"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/ladyhunk001bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894255"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/ladyhunk002ui0bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894256"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/ladyhunk006bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894257"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/rachelooze001bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894258"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/rachelooze002ui0bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/resident-evil-revelations-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Resident Evil: Revelations review: Any port in a storm</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/resident-evil-revelations-review/">Resident Evil: Revelations review: Any port in a storm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 May 2013 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a> launches this week and Capcom has promised some DLC. It starts on June 4 with the Resistance and Enhancement sets for 160 MS Points ($2), each including six different weapon upgrades. Then, on June 11, Capcom will issue two additional characters for use in Raid mode: Rachel Ooze and Lady Hunk. Each character costs 240 MS Points ($3).<br />
<br />
<em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em> is a remake of the 3DS game bearing the same name launched by Capcom in early 2012. Bridging the story between <em>Resident Evil 4</em> and <em>Resident Evil 5</em>, <em>Revelations</em> follows series regulars Jill and Chris, and takes place aboard a derelict cruise liner called the SS Queen Zenobia. A free <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/10/resident-evil-revelations-demo-dated-for-may-14/">demo</a> has been available to all on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and Steam since last week.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/">Resident Evil: Revelations (5/20/13)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894254"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/ladyhunk001bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894255"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/ladyhunk002ui0bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894256"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/ladyhunk006bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894257"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/rachelooze001bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-5-20-13/#5894258"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/rachelooze002ui0bmpjpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/resident-evil-revelations-dlc-characters-upgrades-outlined/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Resident Evil: Revelations DLC characters, upgrades outlined</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/resident-evil-revelations-dlc-characters-upgrades-outlined/">Resident Evil: Revelations DLC characters, upgrades outlined</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 May 2013 13:30:00 EST. The upcoming console/PC iteration of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a> will include a trio of confusing new costumes for Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and Keith Lumley, Capcom has <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/brelston/blog/2013/05/14/pirate-jill-and-chris-ninja-keith-costumes-unlockable-in-revelations">announced</a>. As can be seen in the gallery, Jill and Chris both sport equally leggy nautical-themed outfits, while Keith channels his inner <a href="http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Roronoa_Zoro">One Piece character</a> as a shirtless sword-guy in hammer pants.<br />
<br />
Costumes are unlocked by playing through the game's Campaign and Raid modes, in addition to "other unlocking mechanisms" that Capcom is keeping a secret. We're just hoping Capcom eventually rides this train of thought all the way to its logical extreme: Pretty Soldier Sailor Claire Redfield.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-new-costumes/">Resident Evil: Revelations (New costumes)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-new-costumes/#5889664"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/976924587353061285585720603118o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-new-costumes/#5889662"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/96490858813059787449856113012o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-new-costumes/#5889663"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/9198585873530712855841241595201o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/resident-evil-revelations-adds-pirate-jill-sailor-chris-ninja/">Resident Evil: Revelations adds Pirate Jill, Sailor Chris, Ninja Keith</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 18:00:00 EST. Those cautiously curious to see how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a> translates to bigger screens can try out a demo on May 14 from the Xbox Live Marketplace, Wii U eShop, Steam, and PlayStation Network. On the Wii U, that translation includes touchscreen integration, off-TV play, and some Miiverse extras too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/10/resident-evil-revelations-demo-dated-for-may-14/">Resident Evil: Revelations demo dated for May 14</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 May 2013 09:45:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/mario-and-donkey-kong-minis-on-the-move"><em>Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move</em></a> highlights the new eShop releases this week. The 3DS puzzler has players guiding poor little mini Marios away from hazards by building a Pipe Dream-esque maze. The Wii U Virtual Console picks up two new games in the classic shooter <em>Xevious</em> and puzzle platformer <em>Solomon's Key</em>.<br />

The updated version of <em>Revelations</em> hits Steam on May 20, but the more people that buy it before the launch date, the more goodies everyone can enjoy, with three reward tiers unlocked by pre-order numbers.<br /><br />Tier one is already unlocked, meaning everyone who pre-orders on Steam will get an art book and 13-song soundtrack when the game launches. Next up is tier two, a free copy of 2007's <em>Lost Planet: Extreme Condition</em> that Capcom will distribute shortly after that pre-order goal is reached. Tier three promises "more weapons and more characters" for Raid mode, with four pieces of additional content to be revealed after the game's launch, all part of the Season Pass.<br /><br />There's no word yet if these pre-order bonuses apply to console versions of <em>Revelations</em> as well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/resident-evil-revelations-pre-order-perks-reveal-season-pass-on/">Resident Evil Revelations pre-order perks reveal season pass on Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 23:00:00 EST. After being viciously eviscerated by some horrible monstrosity, players can use the GamePad to scrawl their last, gasping message to the living world, which is then later seen by players who die under similar circumstances.<br /><br />Meanwhile, players can also use the "Creatures Voice" feature in Raid Mode to change what monsters are thinking and saying, which will be fun until one of them reveals your deepest, most traumatic secrets to your group of friends. We didn't start in HD, scale down, and now we're scaling up - we worked to the exact 3DS specs," </span>Tsukasa Takenaka, producer on <em>Resident Evil: Revelations HD</em> told Joystiq at a recent Capcom event<span>. "Development was also going on </span><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-the-mercenaries-3d"><em>Mercenaries</em></a><span> so the team wouldn't have had the capacity to be working on anything above the resolution of the 3DS screen, just to have the assets. At the time there was no plan for consoles - the console version was only decided after the 3DS launch and after we received fan and critic feedback on the game."</span><br /><br />Takenaka said that the port was largely driven by fan feedback, specifically from two segments of people: those who wanted to play it on the big screen, and those who didn't own a 3DS.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-2-14-13/">Resident Evil: Revelations (2/14/13)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-2-14-13/#5639216"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/re-rev-ep41000_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-2-14-13/#5639217"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/re-rev-ep41001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-2-14-13/#5639218"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/re-rev-ep41002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-2-14-13/#5639219"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/re-rev-ep41003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-revelations-2-14-13/#5639220"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/re-rev-ep41004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/18/resident-evil-revelations-hd-port-driven-by-fan-feedback/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Resident Evil: Revelations HD port driven by fan feedback</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/18/resident-evil-revelations-hd-port-driven-by-fan-feedback/">Resident Evil: Revelations HD port driven by fan feedback</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2013 16:15:00 EST. The latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine reveals this tidbit, according to <a href="http://www.nintendo-insider.com/2013/02/09/official-nintendo-magazine-tease-revealed-as-resident-evil-revelations/">Nintendo Insider</a>. The issue is due on UK newsstands in two days.<br /><br />The port also features Wii U Pro Controller support, and GamePad touchscreen-based inventory management. In ONM's interview, producer Tsukasa Takenaka says "There's a joke going around in Japan at the moment about using Off TV Play to play your Wii U games on the Bullet Train, as long as you get on of the seats with a power outlet, so we wanted to make sure Bullet Train play was possible with <em>Revelations.</em>"<br /><br /><em>Revelations</em> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/22/resident-evil-revelations-hits-xbox-360-ps3-pc-wii-u-on-may/">also coming out</a> on PS3, Xbox, and PC; those won't have off-TV play for obvious reasons. It was originally released on 3DS, where it <em>only</em> had off-TV play. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/11/report-resident-evil-revelations-features-off-tv-play-on-wii-u/">Report: Resident Evil: Revelations features off-TV play on Wii U</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:00:00 EST. In terms of Resident Evil launches, Kawata said, "I think certainly looking at the last year or two, there probably were a few too many."<br /><br />Additionally, Kawata said that Capcom "learned last year that putting on a lot of titles would not necessarily win over gamers."<br /><br />Capcom dropped four Resident Evil games throughout 2011 and 2012: <em>The Mercenaries 3D</em>, <em>Revelations</em>, <em>Operation Raccoon City </em>and <em>6</em>. Next in line is <em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em>, the 3DS game, coming to Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U in May.<br /><br />Kawata noted that altering the Resident Evil launch pattern alone wouldn't make the games better, but it could be part of a solution.<br /><br />"At the same time, I don't think we should just stagger them out artificially because that's the solution to the problem we have." he said. "We should always start by asking how do we make the games better. And if the solution to making the games better is to have a more staggered release than we've had recently then that's something we'll do. But we'll do it for that reason and not just for flipping what we've done already."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/03/a-few-too-many-resident-evil-games-in-past-two-years-producer/">'A few too many' Resident Evil games in past two years, producer says</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 03 Feb 2013 19:30:00 EST. Those were the reasons given by Capcom product manager Mike Lunn on the PlayStation Blog, following the news of the 3DS game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/22/resident-evil-revelations-hits-xbox-360-ps3-pc-wii-u-on-may/">impending arrival</a> on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U.<br /><br />Responding to a comment querying the lack of a Vita port, Lunn said, "When we were developing Revelations for new platforms we really wanted to hone in on the experience you get with a large format screen, surround sound, etc. This type of setup really helps players get sucked into the horror vibe and enjoy the game to its fullest extent."<br /><br />That's all good and well, except for how <em>Revelations</em> was initially made for the 3DS and its not-so-large screens. Lunn went on to address that in another comment.<br /><br />"3DS and PS-vita infrastructure let alone developing games for them are extremely different beasts," Lunn noted. "Even just the screens as you mention are completely different resolutions/functions."<br /><br />Capcom's reasoning aside, that leaves the Vita without a Resident Evil game compared to two on its rival handheld, so we can understand frustrations. On the plus side, a lot more people get to play the popular 3DS game when it hits other platforms on May 21.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/25/resident-evil-revelations-isnt-on-vita-because-of-its-itty-bit/">Resident Evil: Revelations isn't on Vita because of its itty-bitty screen</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 11:30:00 EST. Now, purported achievements for the 360 version have <a href="http://exophase.com/game/re-revelations-unveiled-edition-xbox/achievements/">surfaced</a>, listing the game's full title as <em>Resident Evil: Revelations Unveiled Edition</em>.<br /><br />The achievements themselves reveal little, beyond the fact that both Campaign and Raid modes will make the jump from handheld to console, should this all shake out. As intrigued as we are, the idea of a 3DS to console port brings up <em>many</em> questions, though the fact that the word "revelations" is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/03/resident-evil-revelaitons-misprint-makes-it-to-retail/">spelled correctly</a> is promising. We've reached out to Capcom for comment. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/achievements-suggest-resident-evil-revelations-unveiled-editio/">Achievements suggest 'Resident Evil: Revelations Unveiled Edition' for 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Jan 2013 18:00:00 EST. Last night, analyst Anita Frazier reported that "In a list of the top 10 SKU's for the month (as opposed to top titles as listed here), 3DS <em>Kid Icarus: Uprising </em>would have been among the top selling individual SKU's for the month of March." In other words, <em>Kid Icarus</em> was one of the ten best-selling games on a single platform.<br /><br />It's not a Mario-level sales explosion or anything, but certainly not bad for a 3DS debut, and not bad for eight days of sales. By the way,<em> Kid Icarus: Uprising</em> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/23/kid-icarus-uprising-review/">wonderful</a>.<br /><br />Meanwhile, February release <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a> sold around 122,000 in March, the NPD told us. All we know about its February performance is that it was somewhere in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/npds-top-25-includes-at-least-eight-3ds-games/">top 25 games</a>.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> We're asking the NPD for clarification regarding the <em>Revelations</em> sales numbers, as questions have arisen as to the possibility that it could be life-to-date rather than March. We'll update accordingly when we hear back. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/13/npd-kid-icarus-uprising-sold-140k-units-in-march-resident-evil/">NPD: Kid Icarus Uprising sold 140K units in March, Resident Evil Revelations sold 122K</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. For producer Masachika Kawata, it was a chance to take <em>Resident Evil</em> back to its roots.<br /> <br /> "We all agreed that, this time around, we wanted to make a scary <em>Resident Evil</em> similar to the original," Kawata said during a GDC talk that broke down the development of the recent 3DS survival horror game.<br /> <br /> That might bring a slightly rueful smile to the faces of longtime fans. <em>Resident Evil 4</em> gets a lot of love among mainstream gamers and critics; but by admitting that he wanted to make a "scary" game, Kawata seems to be tacitly admitting what many older fans have felt for a while now -- <em>Resident Evil</em> had become an action series.</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/capcoms-kawata-on-bringing-resident-evil-back-to-its-roots-on-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Capcom's Kawata on bringing Resident Evil back to its roots on 3DS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/capcoms-kawata-on-bringing-resident-evil-back-to-its-roots-on-3/">Capcom's Kawata on bringing Resident Evil back to its roots on 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Mar 2012 14:30:00 EST. But 3DS sales were happening just under the surface, with many 3DS games making it into the (undisclosed) top 25 games of February.<br /><br />The NPD told Joystiq that "some examples" of the 3DS titles that made the list include <em>Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, FIFA Soccer, Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars, </em><em>Lego Pirates of the Caribbean</em>,<em> Resident Evil: Revelations, </em>and <em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games</em> -- the last two on that list being February releases.<br /><br />That's ... a significant portion of the top 25. It's also evidence of a reasonably engaged 3DS install base, and therefore stiff competition for the PS Vita, which came out in February. The Vita's <em>Uncharted: Golden Abyss</em> placed somewhere in the top 20 (at least in retail; Vita games also have digital sales not charted by NPD).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/npds-top-25-includes-at-least-eight-3ds-games/">NPD's top 25 includes at least eight 3DS games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Mar 2012 13:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/3ds/creators/8/0">lengthy interview</a> covers a wide range of topics, from the inspiration for the 3DS iterations of Resident Evil to precisely what the essence of Resident Evil is.<br /><br />When asked this very question, the team mentioned a word coined internally at Capcom, "bioreal." Essentially, anything that happens in Resident Evil title has to make sense within the universe Capcom has built. For example, a zombie might be reanimated by a virus but not, as Iwata pointed out, by magic. That said, the team admitted they don't concern themselves too much with "biorealism," and often include more fantastic events as development draws on.<br /><br />One of the more candid moments in the interview came courtesy of assistant producer Tsukasa Takenaka. "Capcom is always like that," he said, "we make the main events interesting and then fill in the gaps with forced logic." Even Iwata was taken aback, saying, "Ohh... You just come right out and say it?" Check out the full Iwata Asks article for more on <em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em> and its focus on bringing horror back to the series.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/06/iwata-asks-about-resident-evil-revelations-forced-logic/">Iwata Asks about Resident Evil: Revelations, 'forced logic'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 23:00:00 EST. For some, we're sure this mistake will be at worst a slight deterrent to purchase. For others, what was once a reasonably interesting 3DS item now seems like a fascinating rare collectible.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: A Capcom representative offered us the following statement: "The initial shipment of <em>Resident Evil Revelations</em> had been sent to retailers in North America with the spelling error. Subsequent shipments of the title are being repackaged and will have the corrected spelling. Customers who have been affected by the misspelling on the <em>Resident Evil Revelations</em> packaging can contact Capcom Customer Service at 650-350-6700 or accounts@capcom.com and a new insert for the front of box will be sent." "That was the concept. It was just a mansion at sea," Killian said. "Capcom USA forced them to change it to a cruise ship."<br /><br />Of course, the "Queen Zenobia" cruise ship is appointed just like a mansion on the inside, so functionally the only difference is that it <em>makes even the slightest bit of sense now</em>. If you'd like to see the suspiciously palatial interior of the Queen Zenobia for yourself, a demo is available on the 3DS eShop.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Seth Killian <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/sethkillian/status/161492766663254016">confirmed</a> that it was a joke. 3DS demos have finally arrived in North America! Or, at least, they will in a couple of hours when the eShop updates. You'll have the opportunity to check out Capcom's classic-style <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil Revelations</em></a> at no risk -- other than the usual risk of terror-soaked pants, we suppose.<br />
<br />
In WiiWare news, remember when Interplay was going to revive <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/9u5rYApQG7LfOeFJJK8OtTZNIZlX86Nq"><em>Stonekeep</em></a> for WiiWare? Well, that's happened. You can see the results above.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/nintendoware-weekly-resident-evil-revelations-demo-stonekeep/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NintendoWare Weekly: Resident Evil Revelations demo, Stonekeep</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/nintendoware-weekly-resident-evil-revelations-demo-stonekeep/">NintendoWare Weekly: Resident Evil Revelations demo, Stonekeep</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 10:00:00 EST. Downloadable 3DS demos were promised as part of the last big firmware update. They started showing up in Japan in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/26/3ds-demos-available-in-japan-today-including-re-revelations-m/">December</a>, and they're finally making their way to North America, starting with tomorrow's demo of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Next week, on January 26, Sega will follow with a demo of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/mario-and-sonic-at-the-london-2012-olympic-games"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games</em></a>, allowing you to satisfy your curiosity about the mascot minigame collection without anyone else ever knowing. Upcoming demos coming at unspecified dates include <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-snake-eater-3d"><em>Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rayman-origins"><em>Rayman Origins</em></a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/18/3ds-demos-coming-to-eshop-in-north-america-starting-with-reside/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>3DS demos coming to eShop in North America, starting with Resident Evil</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/18/3ds-demos-coming-to-eshop-in-north-america-starting-with-reside/">3DS demos coming to eShop in North America, starting with Resident Evil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 08:40:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/26/watch-nintendo-prez-satoru-iwatas-direct-conference-right-her/">Nintendo Direct conference</a> was ... light on news. However, Nintendo did announce that the first downloadable demos for retail 3DS games are hitting the Japanese eShop today! The selection includes <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/theatrhythm-final-fantasy"><em>Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy</em></a>, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a>, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rhythm-thief-and-the-emperors-treasure"><em>Rhythm Thief</em></a>, and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-3d-snake-eater"><em>Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D</em></a>.<br />
<br />
All of those games are expected to launch in the US around the same time as their Japanese releases, save <em>Theatrhythm</em>, which hasn't been announced stateside. We're just going to be optimistic and believe demos are on the way soon. Of course, we were optimistic about the amount of news we thought would come out of this thing, as well, and that didn't get us very far.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/26/3ds-demos-available-in-japan-today-including-re-revelations-m/">3DS demos available in Japan today, including RE: Revelations, MGS 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Dec 2011 23:00:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a> is a game coming to the 3DS. This much we know. Beyond that, the latest trailer has us flummoxed. Who are all these people? What's happening? What's up with that one dude's Flock of Seagulls haircut? All these questions, and more, we leave to you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/resident-evil-revelations-trailer-masters-the-art-of-confusion/">Resident Evil: Revelations trailer masters the art of confusion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 15:10:00 EST. The monsters of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-revelations"><em>Resident Evil: Revelations</em></a> will arrive in Europe on January 27, and they'll bring another monster along with them: the 3DS-enlarging Circle Pad Pro. <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2011/are_you_ready_for_the_revelations_ahead_46923.html">Nintendo UK</a> announced today that the 3DS attachment will be bundled with a "special limited edition" package of Capcom's horror game. <em>Revelations</em> will also be sold separately.<br />
<br />
This is the first official announcement of a release date for the peripheral outside of Japan. Capcom USA has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/31/a-circle-pad-revelation-for-resident-evil-revelations/">shown the game</a> to US press with the attachment, indicating future availability in North America. Capcom USA also said there were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/31/resident-evil-revelations-supports-save-data-reset-no-plans-fo/">no plans</a> for a Circle Pad Pro/<em>Revelations </em>bundle here.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/30/resident-evil-revelations-bundled-with-circle-pad-pro-in-europe/">Resident Evil: Revelations bundled with Circle Pad Pro in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 14:00:00 EST.
