Douglas (who plays both) to the two characters. We're guessing the "goodbye" to Wesker is premature, something the pair even jokes about a little, but it's fun anyway.
Voice actor brokers unlikely alliance between Wesker and Legion originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Apr 2012 13:30:00 EST. I can't really sugarcoat it," he admitted to Game Informer, saying that multiple departments were responsible for checking it, and that procedures had since been updated to make sure it doesn't happen again. "There are only about 90,000 units that have the misprint. If you've got it and it's shrink-wrapped, that's a new special edition, that's our new strategy," Svensson joked.

Svensson declined to comment on the abrupt cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3, and offered a "never say never" on a US release of Ace Attorney Investigations 2. Asura's Wrath sales, according to Svensson, "went about almost exactly how we thought it would."

And Svensson also bends the knee a little bit concerning the announcement of Resident Evil 6 and its proximity to other Resident Evil titles, but is unapologetic about making that title the biggest in the series yet. "The plan is the biggest Resident Evil game ever. We're not messing around," said Svensson.

The plan is working, too, because "pre-orders for Resident Evil 6 are off to a fantastic start. It was to be published by Capcom, but the company had reservations about the new intellectual property -- so much so that it nearly canned the project outright. Ex-Capcom global head of production Keiji Inafune recalled his side of the story during an impassioned GDC 2012 speech yesterday.

Inafune claims he watched from the outside as Capcom's support for Resident Evil faded, and while he worked on other titles within the same company. Mikami fought for the fledgling game, eventually getting it published for Sony's PlayStation. The rest, of course, is zombie-ridden history.

When Capcom began work on a sequel, Inafune says he got himself involved in a production role. "While Mikami focused on the game, as the producer, it was my mission to sell this title to as many people around the world," he said to a room full of attendees. But with the massive success of the first RE title, Inafune's role as salesman was relegated to a cake walk. "With my previous title Mega Man Legends, it was pretty challenging to even book a round of press appointments. No one was interested in hearing about a new Mega Man title," Inafune said. "However, the scenario was completely different with RE2. Once we announced the project, the requests poured in."
Continue reading How Resident Evil 2 helped Keiji Inafune become the indie dev he is today

How Resident Evil 2 helped Keiji Inafune become the indie dev he is today originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 09:00:00 EST. Like all great news, however, there's a bit of a catch.

We're not talking about something awesome and legit, like an official 3DS eShop release, we're talking about ROMs. What's more, the ROMs for these two prototype cartridges, one containing most of Jill's campaign and the other containing an earlier build, will only be released to the internet if the anonymous seller's "fundraiser" reaches its $2,000 goal by the end of February.

Now, that sounds more like extortion than a fundraiser, but the third party running the sale maintains that the benefactor in question is actually taking a substantial loss at that price point. That sounded reasonable at first, but the more we think about it, the less we buy it.

It's true that some rare games can sell for tens of thousands of dollars, but those games tend to exist in extremely limited quantities and also tend to be remarkably verifiable; Stadium Events for the NES and the European version of Kizuna Encounter for the Neo Geo immediately spring to mind. Those are actual games, though, and not ROMs. Unless this collector destroys these cartridges after the ROMs are posted, the $2,000 entry fee is nothing but pure profit, since the cartridges can still be sold afterwards.

Don't get us wrong, we love the idea of preserving the gaming industry's wackier moments. What we don't love is the idea of someone coercing a substantial amount of money from a dedicated fan base by ransoming the distribution of a product that they have no right to distribute. To paraphrase a brilliant professor of archeology, "They belong in a museum!"
Man ransoming unreleased Resident Evil GBC prototype ROMs to the Internet originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 29 Jan 2012 18:00:00 EST.

The "No Hope Left" ad campaign spotted in a variety of locations across Europe has been pinned to Capcom. At least that's according to The Sixth Axis, whose intrepid reporter schlepped down to the Vauxhall station in London after seeing an image pop up on the viral ad campaign's website. He spotted an ad company (Primesight) credited for the faux graffiti and emailed them to confirm who had bought said ad. He was told, "Panel number is 2375 03 Parry Street. The company advertising on it is CAPCOM."

This makes a lot of sense, given the "O" in "No" looks like a stylized biohazard symbol (the name of the Resident Evil series in Japan). It would also not be surprising at all for a video-game company to post adverts marauding as graffiti, though we doubt this will draw as much ire as previous attempts. Either way, it looks like we'll find out more tomorrow, as the ads all point to a reveal on January 19, 2012. Here's hoping tomorrow doesn't accidentally coincide with the real zombie apocalypse. Boy would that be a lot of egg on Capcom's face, eh?

- Ace Attorney pasta and rice
- Monster Hunter allaculte and meat
- Devil Kings salad and soup
- Resident Evil "Brain Cake" dessert

Aside from the Brain Cake -- "Zombies are targeting your brain. Equip the blade and fight!" as Capcom describes it -- the other dishes appear to be a tad vague, even for a teaser menu. Just saying, we wouldn't walk into a bar in the states and order the "meat," but maybe that can fly in Shinjuku.
Capcom has never been one to shy away from aggressively utilizing its core intellectual properties, however iteration often translates to evolution, which can be interpreted as abandonment by the minds of die-hard fans. But, that might not be such a bad thing.

"We think that certainly some people's expectations will be violated, but that's, in our minds, a good thing," said producer Masachika Kawata, speaking on the Resident Evil series during an interview with Gamasutra. "It will hopefully get people to play something that they weren't expecting."

Resident Evil has arguably seen more drastic paradigm shifts than any other Capcom franchise, with the upcoming Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City fully embracing the shooter seeds planted by Resident Evils 4 and 5. Kawata views the situation as one of diversity rather than exclusion, however, implying that the Resident Evil franchise has expanded to accommodate many different genres underneath its IP umbrella, including shooters.

Of course, survival horror is still an integral part of Resident Evil's brand image, and Kawata's own Resident Evil: Revelations is said to be "core-fan focused" in a way that makes it similar to Capcom zombie romps of yore. Still, every relationship needs a little spark now and again: "I'm thinking that if we would have brought out all these Resident Evil titles, and they were all focused on survival horror, absolutely I think people would be really sick of Resident Evil."
Capcom wants to violate your expectations, but in a good way originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 09 Oct 2011 20:30:00 EST. If you're anxiously awaiting the next Paul W.S. Anderson Resident Evil joint, we've got to ask: "Why?" We can't imagine anyone is dying to see another one of these trainwrecks (in 3D again, no less!), but if you are, some new details on Bloody Disgusting may interest you. Milla Jovovich will reprise her role as Alice in the next film, which now has an official title: Resident Evil: Retribution. Her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, will once again direct.

Resident Evil: Retribution currently has a tentative release date of September 14, 2012. Sienna Guillory, who played Jill Valentine in the second film (and made an appearance in the last movie), will return, she has said on Twitter -- though BD says that role is being recast. Also, according to BD, Barry Burton and Leon S. Kennedy will both make appearances in Retribution.
It's not the best quality footage, but Capcom's done us all a solid and uploaded 32 minutes of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City gameplay, direct from its Comic-Con booth. Honestly, we feel pretty bad for the zombies. These Umbrella operatives are strapped to the nines, and with giant Hunters running around, it seems it just isn't safe for a zombie to wander the streets at night any more.
Watch 32 minutes of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 18:00:00 EST. Fresh news out of Comic-Con for zombie hunters and presidential-daughter-babysitting-simulator enthusiasts alike: the previously announced HD remakes of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X will be shambling and moaning onto US shores this September.

RE4HD lands on September 20, with Code Veronica X HD's charmingly incomprehensible plot following a week later on September 27. That's a few weeks after the far superior Japanese launch, not that we're bitter or anything. Both titles will be available at your local brick & mortar, through the PlayStation Network and as Xbox Live Games On Demand titles.
Resident Evil 4 HD and RE: Code Veronica X HD infect the US this September originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 21:30:00 EST. Without looking, we'd like for you to tell us where all of your various and sundry Resident Evil games are located right now. Your copy of Resident Evil 4 is out of its box, lying face-up on the entertainment center? Code Veronica is in a box in the attic? Resident Evil 2 is in the oven? You clearly need a better way of keeping tabs on them -- like, for instance, having nearly all of the franchise's main entries enclosed in Capcom's recently announced 15th Anniversary Box.

The bundle, which will be available in Japan through e-Capcom this September, contains the three PSOne Resident Evils, Revival Selection (the HD remastering of RE4 and Code Veronica) and soundtracks for the two games in the Revival Selection.

Resident Evil 5 is not included in the package, but the Box does include a spacer in which to keep your copy. Voila! No more scratched, misplaced or broiled discs.
Resident Evil games assembled in 15th Anniversary Box originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 10:55:00 EST. Speaking with Capcom Unity last Friday, Capcom USA VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development Christian Svensson said that, given the upheaval and generally bad reaction caused by Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D's peculiar save system, it's unlikely that we would "see something like this happening again."

He also maintains that there was "never quite the malicious intent the conspiracy theorists out there would have you believe," and that RE:TM3D's inability to reset saves was a conscious design decision aimed at maintaining the "arcade fighter" feel of the title. Regardless of why they did it, it's good to hear the team claiming that it won't happen again. We're just dying to reset our Mega Man Legends 3 saves.
Capcom claims RE: The Mercenaries 3D save controversy won't happen again originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Jul 2011 11:45:00 EST. You know that trip you were going to take to Japan this summer? Well, you'll be able to do more than sample the local cuisine and take in the sights -- you're desperately needed to help quell the zombie threat. Well, the paper zombie threat, at least.

Capcom, in collaboration with the EA Shooting Bar (an airsoft gun shooting range not affiliated with the rival publisher), will redecorate the inside of the range to look like the S.T.A.R.S. offices from May 20 through June 19, Andriasang reports. It's all to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Resident Evil.

After a full day of shooting paper zombie targets, patrons will be able to enjoy themed food and drinks, watch a 15th anniversary special video and purchase Resident Evil items. The bar is located in the Musashino area of Tokyo.
Capcom taking over Japanese shooting gallery for Resident Evil anniversary originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 May 2011 07:30:00 EST. The evil Umbrella team gets downright G.I. Joe in the latest trailer for Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Each member of the evil corporation's zombie apocalypse cleaning crew even has a cool nickname. There's Spectre the sniper, the invisible Vector, the heavy weapons guy Beltway and, uh, Bertha. Honestly, had dear old Mom named us Bertha, we'd probably have turned evil too.

It looks like the Umbrella team will have more than zombies to deal with, as a government Spec Ops team has also descended upon the undead-ravaged Raccoon City. Throw in Leon S. Kennedy and an uncontrollable Tyrant and it looks like the U-Team will have its hands full.
Continue reading Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City gives Bertha to new trailer

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City gives Bertha to new trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 14:40:00 EST. It would seem that releasing five Resident Evil games in one year isn't enough to celebrate the series' 15th anniversary. Capcom has also added a zombie-filled boatload of merchandise to the Japanese Resident Evil 15th anniversary site.

The highlight looks to be the airsoft replica of Chris Redfield's "Samurai Edge" pistol. It's scheduled to be released sometime this year and, at

¥20,790 ($245), the pellet-shooter certainly isn't cheap. Print media enthusiasts are already poring over exclusive details of Capcom's upcoming squad-based affair, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, in PlayStation: The Official Magazine and Official Xbox Magazine, while the digerati have had to settle for ... well, getting all the details early online anyways.

And now, the internet wins again as Capcom's released a teaser trailer for RE:ORC. Some napkin math - 29.97 frames per second and 70 seconds of video - shows we're looking at about 2098 images in the below trailer. If each one of those is worth a thousand words, things aren't looking so good in Printlandia. Another place things aren't looking so good: Raccoon City.
Continue reading Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City teaser trailer leaves Leon bemused

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City teaser trailer leaves Leon bemused originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 11:55:00 EST.

As we first heard late last year, Capcom is apparently putting a new twist on the Resident Evil franchise with the help of SOCOM: Confrontation dev Slant Six Games. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, a squad based shooter, is reportedly the cover story of Official Xbox Magazine's May 2011 issue.

The issue, which StickSkills claims to have obtained from an unnamed newsstand (pictured above) that routinely sells issues early, supposedly details a game in which players take on the role of Umbrella Corporation special forces on a mission to clean up Raccoon City following the events of Resident Evil 2.

According to the site, the team will have access to "big guns" and employ a number of tricks to fool and manipulate enemies -- human or otherwise. Trying to kill series hero Leon Kennedy is said to factor into the game, with the possibility of friendly forces being deployed to protect him. Operation Raccoon City is reportedly in development for Xbox 360 and PS3, and is scheduled for release this winter.

When contacted, neither Capcom nor OXM could comment on this report. You can see the full cover image, provided by StickSkills, after the break. The issue is scheduled to hit newsstands, officially, on April 5.
Continue reading Report: Squad-based 'Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City' detailed in new OXM

Report: Squad-based 'Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City' detailed in new OXM originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. The official website for Capcom's Resident Evil: Revival Selection has launched, debuting a handful of screens showing how its constituent games (Resident Evil 4 and Code Veronica) will look on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Check out these few screenshots in the gallery below, or hit up the official site for more info on the collection.

The difference isn't super clear, except in the comparison shot posted above -- though we can't help but wonder if the left, standard resolution side of that image is a poor representation of the original game. It's been a while since we played Resident Evil 4, but we don't remember ever yelling, "Oh, man, shoot that big gray thing with your ... gun? Is that a gun? It kind of looks like a cigar, and I don't think that's going to be very helpful in this particular scenario."

Sorry, but that's the closest onomatopoeia we could come up with for the sound of confetti coming out of a giant cannon. What's the occasion? Why, it's the one millionth port of Resident Evil 4! It's a big honor, and it goes to Biohazard (Resident Evil): Revival Selection, a set of high-definition updates of RE 4 and Code Veronica, that Famitsu says is headed to 360 and PS3. According to Andriasang, the full title may be "Resident Evil Revival Selection HD Remastered Version," and fair warning: If we have to type that out in full every time, we'll never cover this game again.

The updates, which have only been announced for Japan at the moment, will feature RE 4's bonus Ada Wong scenario, "Separate Ways."

Dirk the Daring was unavailable as of press time to comment on the possibility of these upstarts shattering his record. That said, if any STARS agents come up missing, we'll make Singe's belly the first spot we check.
Resident Evil: Revival Selection brings RE4 and Code Veronica to 360, PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 08:36:00 EST.

Like the zombies it's based off of, the Resident Evil movie franchise will not die. Although the fifth film has yet to be subtitled, it does have a date. "Resident Evil 5" will be in theaters -- in 3D, of course -- on September 14, 2012.

There's good reason for the hastened production schedule for yet another sequel. According to Box Office Mojo, last year's Resident Evil film, Afterlife, was the highest grossing in the series, generating over $236 million, which is "about as much as the first three movies combined," the site notes. Afterlife enjoyed success in international markets and generated additional revenue through its 3D presentations. According to the report, about 80 percent of Afterlife's domestic revenue came from its extra-dimensional screenings.

With the success of Resident Evil on the silver screen, it's no surprise Capcom and Sony Pictures are trying to strike gold again. In addition to Resident Evil, a Devil May Cry film is also in the works.
Fifth Resident Evil movie in the works, scheduled for 2012 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 20:20:00 EST. Unsurprisingly, given its basis on content from Resident Evils 4 and 5, The Mercenaries is closer to completion, estimated at 70%.

Capcom is adding some kind of touch screen control system and RPG-ish character customization, and has also implemented first-person aiming for weapons, during which you aim with the analog slider. Director Kazuhisa Inoue said that this change allows players to experience the 3D visuals as if they were really there -- as if they were really surrounded by monsters. How nice.

Revelations is earlier in the development process -- just 20%. According to Famitsu's feature, it takes place on a cruise ship between the events of RE4 and RE5. It's meant to combine the exploration of pre-RE4 games with the combat in the later Resident Evils. Director Koushi Nakanishi says that with limited ammo and creatures emerging unexpectedly, it's a real "survival horror" game.
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D nearing completion; Revelations returning to series roots originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 12:30:00 EST. Gamerzines speculates that a commercial for the upcoming Spike VGAs, which flashes "look closer" and briefly reveals the zombie silhouetted picture above, is teasing a new Resident Evil title. The site concluded this by comparing the teaser image to that of an officially licensed Resident Evil t-shirt. The shirt and teaser image feature matching zombie silhouettes.

If the teaser is for a new Resident Evil title, a potential reveal could be for Slant Six Games' rumored multiplayer Resident Evil: Raccoon City. Of course, we always prefer to be surprised.

[Update: Looks like someone had their hands in the IP cookie jar - despite an overwhelming similarity to some Resident Evil artwork, this tease was actually for Activision's upcoming Prototype 2.]

He also talked at length about his displeasure with moving into a producer role at Capcom after the first Resident Evil. "There was a time when I wanted to leave Capcom because of that," Mikami said. "I joined Capcom in order to create things, and I thought that going away from that would be counterproductive. It was hard, not being directly involved with the development process." Even so, it was with some reluctance that he took over directing for Resident Evil 4. "I had been a producer for eight years, and the moment I finally get a chance to return to development, it's on RE. That sure wasn't what I intended!"

Discussing his future at Tango, he didn't put quite the sense of finality on his next game as he had in a previous interview with Famitsu. "Sooner or later, I'll have to shift my attention to raising new talent and handing the baton over to them. Joining the ZeniMax family puts me in a situation where I can leave the more boring details of that to other people. I'm trying not to expect too much, but I do feel that this is a chance for me to keep working in the front lines of development."
In this trailer for Resident Evil: Damnation, a new 3D computer-generated film due in 2012, our salon-fresh savior Leon S. Kennedy finds himself in a European warzone, facing "the worst evil." Known best for its work on the SOCOM franchise, Vancouver-based Slant Six Games is rumored be working on a forthcoming Resident Evil title for Capcom. The game is said to be named "Resident Evil: Raccoon City." According to a document handed to Kotaku, the unannounced RE title is team-based, with various Slant Six employees' LinkedIn profiles indicating the studio is working on an unannounced "multiplayer action game." The Slant Six official website indicates that "an amazing new project" is in development in conjunction with a "new publishing partner on a world class franchise."

For its part, Capcom maintains that it "does not respond to rumors and/or speculation," and Slant Six had yet to respond to request for comment as of publishing. Sharing one of its biggest franchises with a Western developer wouldn't be a new strategy for Capcom -- Dead Rising 2 was developed by Vancouver-based Blue Castle Games (which Capcom subsequently purchased), and Devil May Cry is now in the hands of Enslaved developer Ninja Theory.
Rumor: SOCOM's Slant Six working on multiplayer Resident Evil originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 09:30:00 EST. Last night's Nintendo 3DS showcase highlighted a brand new addition to the Resident Evil franchise -- the second planned for the 3DS system. The Mercenaries 3D combines the arcade levels from both Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 and adds "brand new modes" and "well known characters from the series." According to Capcom, the game will also take advantage of the 3DS Wi-Fi Connection for online co-op play "regardless of location." Does this mean you'll be able to run, stop, aim, and shoot zombies with friends from Japan?

The first screenshots of the game showcase one of the earliest levels from Resident Evil 5, and while the 3DS version doesn't appear to have the same fidelity as the PS3/360 originals, it looks impressive nonetheless. Paul W.S. Anderson's latest installment in the Resident Evil film franchise, subtitled Afterlife (or in most technologically-endowed theaters, Afterlife 3D), took home top honors in last weekend's box office ranking. What does this mean? Well, it means we're angry at a lot of America for not going to see Machete -- but, according to lead actress Milla Jovovich, it also means we can expect to see yet another movie chronicling Alice's beef with the Umbrella Corporation.

"This new Resident Evil is the first one to ever open at No. 1 worldwide," Jovovich recently told New York magazine. "It's the biggest movie in the franchise. So we're definitely going to make another one." She goes on to ask that fans of the series send suggestions for the next film to her Twitter page, which also contains much needed, step-by-step instructions on how to properly pronounce her name. Thanks, Milla!
Jovovich: Another Resident Evil movie is 'definitely' coming originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 18:00:00 EST. Capcom and Sony Pictures are subjecting victims to another CG Resident Evil movie: Damnation. The animated feature will be released in Japan in 2012 using that 3D tech the corporations are raving about.

According to Capcom, the first Resident Evil CG film, Degeneration, has shipped over 1.6 million copies for home viewing and its limited "2-week / 3-screen theatrical release in Japan" grossed ¥40 million yen ($480K).

Despite Resident Evil's celluloid excursions being reviled by critics, the series has made plenty of bank. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D is currently the top movie at the box office.
Resident Evil: Damnation 3D CG movie sequel announced originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 09:31:00 EST. It seems that the combination of 3D technology, video game inspiration and the acting chops of Milo Jovonovich ... Milli Jovovonich ... that lady from The Fifth Element proved undeniable for moviegoers this past weekend. Paul W.S. Anderson's latest foray into the world of game movies, Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D took first place in the box office over the weekend, netting $28 million on opening night alone.

That's the best opening for any film in the series so far, but with an estimated budget of $60 million, it's got a little ways to go to break even. But hey -- enough about the monies. Did you see the movie? How was it? And how was Mrs. Jovavonov ... Joovajanavich ... M.J.?
Resident Evil: Afterlife nets first place at the box office originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 18:15:00 EST. Though the scripts of most game-to-movie adaptations are written with a heavy focus on maintaining the canon and integrity of the source material, it seems ... HA! Oh, man, we almost made it through that sentence without breaking. Anyways, Resident Evil: Afterlife producer/director/writer Paul W.S. Anderson recently gushed to Reuters that much of the script for the fourth film in the franchise was deliberately penned with 3D technology in mind.

"I wrote things into this script that I knew would work well in 3D, like lots of sets with depth-like tunnels, elevator shafts, and big wide landscapes," Anderson explained. We suppose that doesn't stray too far from the actual Resident Evil games. For instance, this trailer for the film features a ton of people throwing sharp hand tools at other people -- an attack that rings familiar of Resident Evil 4, no? Oh, and let's not forget the absolutely devastating sunglasses death-fling maneuver from Resident Evil 5, seen in this spoileriffic video.
3D effects written into Resident Evil: Afterlife script originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 17:25:00 EST. "The goal for Dead Rising 2 is to replace the Resident Evil franchise and become the number one IP within Capcom," Keiji Inafune told Eurogamer. It's a lofty claim -- according to Capcom's own data, Street Fighter is the company's top franchise. Still, taking down the Resident Evil franchise first is no easy task. Unlike Capcom's other properties, the company's original survival-horror game has the mainstream appeal to support three successful Hollywood adaptations (with a fourth one opening this week). The last iteration of the series sold over 5 million copies. Dead Rising, on the other hand, sold 1.6 million.

Dead Rising has big shoes to fill, but it's that lofty ambition that pushes good game design, Inafune argues. "Unless you have a big goal to strive for, you can't create a good game. Therefore, if the Dead Rising franchise takes over the Resident Evil franchise, a new game I come up with will obviously strive to go over Dead Rising. That's the goal I set out for any title I decide to create."

If Dead Rising 2 becomes the success Inafune wants it to be, we wonder what the next big idea from Capcom will be. Another IP with even more zombies?
Dead Rising 2's Keiji Inafune and his desire to 'replace the Resident Evil franchise' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 09:05:00 EST. According to Capcom, the engine delivers stereoscopic visuals and "graphical quality comparable to consoles."

You can judge for yourself in the trailer below. Of course, since it isn't stereoscopic, and there is as of yet no way of knowing whether these scenes are in-engine or pre-rendered, it's not exactly the most accurate representation of the 3DS's capabilities. It is, though, still a trailer for a new Resident Evil game, and as such it's loaded with entertainingly overacted dialogue.
While the undead are typically characterized as being cold & clammy -- not to mention their whole penchant for eating the living -- Capcom COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto says he hopes to "heat up" the zombie-fueled Resident Evil game franchise to coincide with Resident Evil: Afterlife's arrival in theaters this fall.

"The 3D movie Resident Evil IV Afterlife starring Milla Jovovich is scheduled to hit theaters on September 10. Timed with the movie's release, we'd like to do something to heat up the game series," Tsujimoto told with Japanese business journal Nikkei BP. Whether that means a new game announcement, the release of a current RE title on a new platform or ... well, anything really wasn't specified. What we do know is that Tokyo Game Show 2010 will open a mere six days following the film on September 16, making it ideally timed for such a "hot" game announcement.
From what we hear, the kids are all abuzz about something called "The Facebook" these days. Japanese game publisher Capcom is jumping on board the popular social network, with president Haruhiro Tsujimoto revealing in a recent interview with BusinessWeek that a new game could be ready before the end of the fiscal year (ending March 31, 2011).

"Gaming on social networks is poised to impact the traditional video game industry and is a presence that cannot be ignored. We have to make our move," he said. Presumably, Tsujimoto and Capcom want a low-investment moneymaker on Facebook to help bolster the coming year's sales over last year's "sluggish" earnings. For our part, we're hoping for a Resident Evil-based, free-to-play management sim. Who isn't?
It sounds like that high-stakes game of Blackjack might not be necessary in deciding the producer of Resident Evil 6. In an interview with Xbox World 360 magazine (via online affiliate CVG), Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi acknowledged his intent to give up a possible leadership role in developing the next installment in the series.

"Personally, I don't think I'm gonna deal with Resident Evil 6 at all," Takeuchi explained, "as far as the series is concerned I'm not planning to return until at least two more Olympics have passed!" You mean ... in four years? (Why couldn't he just say "in four years?")

Well then, we hope to hear more about the future of Resident Evil in just 1/24th of an Olympics calendar. Which is to say, in June, at E3 2010.
Takeuchi unsure about his Resident Evil 6 involvement originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 May 2010 21:30:00 EST. A small crowd of movie and game producers met this week at Universal City in Los Angeles for the first-ever 3D Gaming Summit, to sit down and discuss the trend of 3D imaging in gaming and film. Much of the talk at the summit was speculative -- with almost no actual consumer devices on the market and nearly none within price range of the average consumer anyway, gaming in 3D isn't much more than an idea at this point. Most of the technology companies in attendance are still working to get content producers to use their systems to create games and films rather than selling hardware directly to consumers.

Still, the panels and discussions at the summit offered an interesting look at what many believe to be the eventual future of the industry. From a lunchtime interview with Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson to a Playstation Move demo (and a panel moderated by a Joystiq editor), the 3D Gaming Summit showed off a lot of guesswork, a few interesting demos, and a few big holes that will need to be filled if 3D gaming is going to ever take off.
Continue reading Finding a new dimension for gaming at the 3D Gaming Summit

Finding a new dimension for gaming at the 3D Gaming Summit originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 24 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST.
