While his big screen adventures have evolved into masterpieces, most of Batman's video game outings have made players want to poke out their eyes with a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/25/unboxing-the-batman-arkham-asylum-collectors-edition/">Batarang</a>. To celebrate the arrival of Batman's latest and (we assure you) greatest adventure - <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Batman-Arkham-Asylum/">Batman: Arkham Asylum</a></em> - Joystiq looks back at the rest of the Caped Crusader's games.<br />

On March 13, 2009, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Resident-Evil-5/">Resident Evil 5</a></em> runs into stores with modern zombie swiftness. Being that the latest installment is the first time the franchise has ever hit the Xbox platform, X-heads are more than a little excited. Need a primer for some of the Resident Evil story? GameTrailers has released the <em>Survivor Retrospective</em>, a spoiler-rich look back at the adventures of fan-favorite characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/24/video-resident-evil-survivor-retrospective/">Video: Resident Evil 'Survivor' Retrospective</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Dec 2008 19:20:00 EST. Gametrailers' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warcraft-retrospective">Warcraft Retrospective</a> continues with episode two focusing on the events and gameplay mechanics of <span style="font-style: italic;">Warcraft III</span>. The piece covers <span style="font-style: italic;">WC III: Reign of Chaos</span> and its expansion, <span style="font-style: italic;">The Frozen Throne</span>, but also delves into the <span style="font-style: italic;">Defense of the Ancients </span>mod and its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dota">infamous Euro pop music video</a>. <br /><br />The next installment in the series will delve into the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/world-of-warcraft-of-reaches-11-million-mark/">11 million player strong</a> phenomenon that is <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraf</span><em>t</em></a>. Console gamers may not realize that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Fallout-3/">Fallout 3</a></em> isn't the first jump into the post-apocalyptic universe -- you know, if the <em>3</em> in the title wasn't a glaring indicator. Looking to catch up before <em>Fallout 3</em> lands on the Xbox 360 tomorrow? GameTrailers has developed a 15-minute retrospective on the famed series that will showcase how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Bethesda/">Bethesda</a> has decided to evolve the series into an <em>Oblivion</em> style game -- much to the chagrin of some of the original fans. Excited for <em>Fallout 3</em>? Tell us in the comments below but if you've been lucky enough to play it early, do not spoil anything ... a swift banhammer will be in your future if you do!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/video-prepare-for-fallout-3/">Video: Prepare for Fallout 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 13:15:00 EST. Do you find yourself with a good quarter-hour to kill this Sunday evening? Do you have a relatively fast internet connection? Are you curious about the mythos of the <em>Fallout </em>universe -- curiosity spawned from excitement over Bethesda's upcoming entry into the franchise, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Fallout%203" style="font-style: italic;">Fallout 3</a><em>? </em>Do you have absolutely no plans to go back and play the earlier installments in said franchise, and therefore have no hangups over having the plots of said games spoiled for you? <br /><br />If the answer to all of the above questions is an exuberant "yes", you really have no reason not to check out <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/42026.html?type=mov">Gametrailers' <em>Fallout</em> Retrospective</a>, which we've posted after the break. GameTrailers' excellent retrospective series is back this week with two new installments for different game franchises. The first new series its premiering is the Warcraft Retrospective, which has its debut episode (in the four-part series) covering the original two installments in the <em>Warcraft</em> RTS series. It's hard to recall <em>Warcraft</em> ever being a humble RTS series considering the behemoth <em><a href="http://www.wowinsider.com">World of Warcraft</a></em> has become.<br /><br />GT will also premiere a one-part <em>Fallout</em> retrospective this Saturday, Oct. 25. The episode will cover the evolution of the series from its days at Interplay to the current, Bethesda-helmed <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/fallout-3">Fallout 3</a></em>. The first episode in the Warcraft Retrospective can be found after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/warcraft-retrospective-part-i-up-now-fallout-retrospective-thi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warcraft Retrospective: Part I up now, Fallout Retrospective this Saturday</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/warcraft-retrospective-part-i-up-now-fallout-retrospective-thi/">Warcraft Retrospective: Part I up now, Fallout Retrospective this Saturday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 18:59:00 EST. GameTrailers starts with the galaxy far, far away's near past, and then goes deep into the history books in its latest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/starwarsretrospective/"><em>Star Wars</em> Retrospective</a> episode. This time around the excellent series starts by taking a look at <span style="font-style: italic;">Shadows of the Empire</span>, an action game which fills in a piece of the story between the movies <span style="font-style: italic;">Empire Strikes Back</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Return of the Jedi</span>. <br /><br />The rest of the episode delves deep into the past and covers the <span style="font-style: italic;">Knights of the Old Republic</span> RPG games, which take place millennia before Luke and Leia were even a dirty thought in Darth Vader's mind. And if anybody complains that we should have put a spoiler alert there, we hope the cave you've been living in for the last 25 years has central heat and air. Check out the 24-minute <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/37296.html">retrospective episode</a> after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks Andy] <span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span><em></em><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/star-wars-retrospective-episode-vii-visits-the-empires-shadows/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Wars Retrospective: Episode VII visits the Empire's shadows, the old republic</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/star-wars-retrospective-episode-vii-visits-the-empires-shadows/">Star Wars Retrospective: Episode VII visits the Empire's shadows, the old republic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 02:30:00 EST. Will there be a new DS? A new handheld altogether? A new array of DS Lite colors instead? Nearly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/nintendo-e3-2008-press-conference-lets-play-bingo/">anything is possible</a>, and while we wait, bouncing up and down on our toes and struggling to remember to breathe through the excitement, it's a good time to look back at the history of Nintendo's handhelds. From the extensive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/collecting-and-obsessing-game-and-watch/">Game &amp; Watch collection</a> to a few portables you may have forgotten, Nintendo has a rich and storied handheld history, and it's one we celebrate every day -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nintendo-handheld-retrospective/918008/">just not like this</a>.<br /><br /> <hr width="100%" size="2" />

GameTrailers continues its<a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33339.html"> </a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/starwarsretrospective/"><em>Star Wars</em> Retrospective</a> by covering the first person shooter games in the galaxy far, far away's oeuvre. Before the "survival horror" of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil"><em>Resident Evil</em></a> and the foggy streets of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill"><em>Silent Hill</em></a>, there was the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alone-in-the-dark"><em>Alone in the Dark</em></a> - the granddaddy of the game that hits Xbox 360, Wii, and PC today. It set the course for horror games to come and spawned three sequels that have all led up to Atari's latest stab at creating a next-gen blockbuster.<br /><br />Summon up your courage and join us for a terrifying look back at the series' evolution from perilously pointy polygons to an ominous Old West set and beyond. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/a-dark-past-an-alone-in-the-dark-retrospective/879283/">Don't be afraid - let's get started!</a><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/a-dark-past-an-alone-in-the-dark-retrospective/">A Dark Past: An Alone in the Dark Retrospective</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. The series returns today with the crackle of blaster fire, the hum of a recently activated AT-AT, the whistle of an armed thermal detonator -- you see, all the games <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/35435.html?type=mov">featured in this episode</a> focus on those titles that let you relive the film's major battles. From RTS classics like <em>Galactic Battlegrounds</em> and <em>Empire at War</em>, to the best-selling Star Wars game of all time, <em>Star Wars: Battlefront 2</em>, we can't help but get misty-eyed recalling some of our great galactic campaigns. For those who are just joining <em>Metal Gear </em>with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-4">latest installment</a>, it certainly helps to watch. Those afraid of audio/visual presentations can take solace in knowing we've created our own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/what-you-need-to-know-before-playing-metal-gear-solid-4/">pictorial explanation</a> of what players need to know before starting <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em>. <br /><br />Now, a group of us are going to go get a drink and relax before we take a three hour quiz <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/meet-the-team-ludwig-kietzmann/">Ludwig</a> has set up for us on <em>Metal Gear</em> lore this evening. The game marked a huge change for the series, not only in setting and time period but also with its gameplay. <em>Snake Eater</em> was the most innovative and most difficult out of the three main games, and is probably the favorite for many diehard <em>MGS</em> fans. <br /><br />With so many memorable moments and a brilliant ending, there's no doubt that this one cemented <em>MGS</em> as one of the best (if not <em>the</em> best) narratives ever told in gaming. Each successive <em>MGS</em> game raised the bar for excellence and we're certain that <em>MGS4</em> will no doubt raise it even higher.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/metal-gear-retrospective-mgs-3/">Metal Gear retrospective: MGS 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. We've been following GameTrailers' <em>Metal Gear</em> retrospective in anticipation of <em>MGS4,</em> and this time we're bringing some of that excitement to all of you PSP gamers. This time the retrospective takes a look back at something you might have played: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/portable-ops/"><em>MGS: Portable Ops</em></a> and the game that it was based on, <em>MGS3: Snake Eater</em>.<br /><br />Many of you may have played <em>Portable Ops</em> wanting to continue the story of Big Boss from <em>Snake Eater</em>. Others probably just wanted to get more <em>Metal Gear</em> into their systems after having played the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/metal-gear-acid/"><em>Acid</em></a> games. Whatever the reason, <em>MGS</em> fans alike were treated to seeing some familiar faces and having a bit of their stories fleshed out. If you haven't played the game, check out the retrospective to see what it's all about. It also looks like next week GameTrailers will be taking a look back at some of the other portable <em>Metal Gear</em> games, so look out for that.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/metal-gear-retrospective-mgs-portable-ops/">Metal Gear retrospective: MGS Portable Ops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 12:00:00 EST. <p>Retrospectives are both a great and horrible thing. This <em>Metal Gear</em> retrospective by GameTrailers is an excellent way to relive the long-revered franchise. To many, it may come as strange to think that Kojima was ever a troubled developer -- but that's exactly what happened. The original <em>Metal Gear</em> was a last-ditched attempt at saving Kojima's career. The idea of a "sneaking mission" game, where the player isn't encouraged to kill everything on sight was a daring move ... that ultimately paid off. The early origins of Snake's adventures are fascinating to see, as they help ground us for Snake's last adventure -- <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em>. While this retrospective serves as a fantastic primer, it also details some of the noteworthy differences between the MSX original, and the NES follow-up. Also, find out more about the NES-exclusive sequel, which wasn't handled by Kojima at all.<br /><br />Oh, and why are retrospectives horrible? Because they remind us how old we are.</p>

There, we were visited by a celestial being who spoke only one immensely insightful sentence: "There is perhaps no greater litmus test for measuring success than to look back at one's past accomplishments."<br /><br />At first, we weren't quite sure what our ethereal host wanted us to do with this incredibly important message. After hours upon hours of internal discussion, we made no headway into uncovering what we believe is certainly the key to finding the meaning of life.<br /><br />With nothing else to do, we began talking about our undying love for the PlayStation 3, but the PS2 and PS1 kept creeping into the conversation until we started to compare the three systems. And now that the PlayStation 3 has just turned a year old, what better time to look back at how it stacks up against the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation than the present?<br /><br />So sit down, grab a hot cup of cocoa and be prepared to be wowed, because some of our findings may surprise you.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/one-year-down-how-do-the-playstations-stack-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>One year down: How do the PlayStations stack up?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/one-year-down-how-do-the-playstations-stack-up/">One year down: How do the PlayStations stack up?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Nov 2007 23:00:00 EST. <strong>Happy Birthday PS3! </strong>One year down, nine more to go. Sony's first year in the new video game generation has been a rough one. But, what does Sony have to say about it? We chatted with SCEA's <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/?author=5059">Kim Nguyen</a>, Marketing Manager of the PS3, to find out more.<br /><br /><strong>PS3 has struggled quite a bit during its first year of release. Why do you think the games media has bashed the PS3 so much?</strong><br />Looking back on year one, we're proud at how far the PS3 has come and are sure that the future will only be brighter. There were some bumps in the road but that's to be expected during the first year of a platform's lifecycle. Regardless, we are very confident in the future of PS3 given our new hardware and pricing, along with the strong line up of upcoming software titles that will place PS3 in a very strong position this holiday and for years to come.<br /><br /><strong>What has Sony done to turn things around?</strong><br />We recently launched new PS3 hardware and pricing and are already seeing strong sales momentum at retail--PS3 sales have increased by 192% over the past 2 weeks at major retailers in North America . We have more than 160 games coming to the platform including 19 exclusives. We also recently launched a new ad campaign, our biggest marketing effort to date, that conveys the overall benefits of PS3 including Blu-ray and PLAYSTATION Network. Again we feel PS3 is in a very strong position this holiday and for years to come.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/sceas-kim-nguyen-looks-at-the-ps3s-first-year/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SCEA's Kim Nguyen looks at the PS3's first year</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/sceas-kim-nguyen-looks-at-the-ps3s-first-year/">SCEA's Kim Nguyen looks at the PS3's first year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Nov 2007 10:30:00 EST. <p>What better way to look at our one year retrospective than to go all the way back to launch? The PS3 launch was a nightmare. With supplies in incredibly short stock, people went a bit crazy trying to secure one. People <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/ps3-campers-shot-outside-kentucky-best-buy/">were shot</a>, and as seen in <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/130659.html?playlist=featured">this video</a>, people were probably trampled too. Of course, once people actually secured a system, they immediately sent it to eBay, trying to mark it up to ridiculous $1000+ levels (one auction went for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/16/ps3-on-ebay-pulls-in-10-100/">over $10,000</a>!). To think, a year afterwards, the system is still in third place in the next-gen console wars and is now available for $399. A lot has changed over the past twelve months, and we're certain that the next twelve will feature even more drama and turmoil.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/one-year-ago-a-look-at-ps3s-violent-launch/">One year ago: a look at PS3's violent launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Nov 2007 09:00:00 EST. The rules to create a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/finalfantasy/"><em>FF</em></a> game worthy to be part of the Roman numeral series are pretty loose, but GT does their best to go over <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27455.html">most of the minutia required</a> for an installment in the franchise. Crystals vs. spheres, three party members or four, what role should Cid play? These are the hard questions SquareEnix has to sit down and answer before starting a project. <br /><br />Go ahead now and enjoy the last retrospective. If you missed any of the episodes they are linked below for easy reference. If you decide to go on a <em>Final Fantasy</em> retrospective today it'll only take a few hours to watch them all. We're looking forward to GameTrailers' next (significantly shorter) retrospective series tackling ... well, they won't tell us. What would y'all want it to be?<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/">Part I &amp; II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iii/">Part III</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iv/">Part IV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-v/">Part V</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vi/">Part VI</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vii/">Part VII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-viii/">Part VIII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/18/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-ix/">Part IX</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-x/">Part X</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-xi/">Part XI</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/26/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-xii/">Part XII</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/03/finality-with-final-fantasy-retrospective-part-xiii/">Finality with Final Fantasy retrospective: Part XIII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 03 Nov 2007 10:33:00 EST. The latest in Game Trailers' <span style="font-style: italic;">Final Fantasy</span> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/finalfantasyretrospective/">retrospective series</a> looks at the many remakes in the series and some of the translation issues the franchise has faced as well. Considering all of the upcoming (and past) remake excitement, this is definitely one of the episodes in the retrospective that's worth a watch, and so we've put it in our weekly video spotlight. Check it out after the jump!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/26/friday-video-remake-retrospective/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Friday Video: Remake retrospective</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/26/friday-video-remake-retrospective/">Friday Video: Remake retrospective</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Oct 2007 17:40:00 EST. This week, GameTrailer's retrospective <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27088.html">episode</a> looks back at all the <em>Final Fantasy</em> remakes. Yes, it takes 14 minutes to go through them all. The most interesting part of this episode is the significant portion of time spent explaining the language translation issues that have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/26/death-returns-to-final-fantasy-vi/">haunted</a> the series since its inception. <br /><br />Next week, in the final episode of the <em>Final Fantasy</em> retrospective, GameTrailers will cobble together an original <em>Final Fantasy</em> game from scratch, utilizing the elements necessary for a "<em>Final Fantasy</em> game." This ought to be a joyous bundle of clich&eacute;s. You know Cid has to be in there somewhere.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/">Part I &amp; II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iii/">Part III</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iv/">Part IV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-v/">Part V</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vi/">Part VI</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vii/">Part VII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-viii/">Part VIII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/18/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-ix/">Part IX</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-x/">Part X</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-xi/">Part XI</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/26/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-xii/">Final Fantasy retrospective: Part XII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Oct 2007 14:55:00 EST. This week they <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/26204.html">move into</a> the <em>Final Fantasy Legend</em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/crystalchronicles">The Crystal Chronicles</a></em>, and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kingdomhearts"><em>Kingdom Hearts</em></a> saga.<br /><br />Let's just skip past the <em>Final Fantasy Legend</em> games because those aren't really <em>Final Fantasy </em>games<em> (</em>although what really is?<em>)</em>, they were just given the name to capitalize on the <em>Final Fantasy</em> brand in the west and are actually the Saga series. Next on the list is the endearing <em>Crystal Chronicles</em>. If the GameBoy Advance required multiplayer were done today using the Nintendo DS, it really wouldn't be such a big deal considering everyone and their mother has a DS that could link up wirelessly with the Wii. The smart man's modern <em>Gauntlet</em>, <em>Crystal Chronicles</em> really is a great multiplayer experience if you have the GBAs. Finally, the retrospective covers <em>Kingdom Hearts</em>, where the peanut butter of <em>Final Fantasy</em> meets the chocolate of Disney. <em>Kingdom Hearts</em> now stands alone with its own separate world and rules to continue down its own path as more additions to the series are guaranteed to come along. <br /><br />Next week the <em>Final Fantasy</em> retrospective will cover all the remakes of the Roman numeral series we've seen over the years.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/">Part I &amp; II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iii/">Part III</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iv/">Part IV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-v/">Part V</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vi/">Part VI</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vii/">Part VII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-viii/">Part VIII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/18/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-ix/">Part IX</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-x/">Part X</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-xi/">Final Fantasy retrospective: Part XI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 11:26:00 EST. Some of it good, some of it <em>Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within</em>. One of the more interesting parts about this episode is all the <em>Chocobo</em> games, many of which never made it to the States. You'd think if there's anything that Americans would gobble up it's games with big cute yellow birds -- we've been watching one on PBS for decades. Next week the retrospective covers the successful spin-offs of <em>Final Fantasy</em> like <em>Crystal Chronicles</em> and <em>Kingdom Hearts</em>.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/">Part I &amp; II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iii/">Part III</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iv/">Part IV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-v/">Part V</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vi/">Part VI</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vii/">Part VII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-viii/">Part VIII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/18/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-ix/">Part IX</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-x/">Final Fantasy retrospective: Part X</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Sep 2007 08:30:00 EST. Actually this episode is more about <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/25003.html">the world of Ivalice</a> -- all of it. At around 25 minutes long, you might as well grab a drink and some popcorn before you start this episode.<br /><br />The world of Ivalice is actually playable in four games: <em>Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced </em>and<em> Final Fantasy XII</em>. The big question is how these four games and their respective worlds tie into each other, which the retrospective covers in the last section of this episode. There are more games planned to occur in the world of Ivalice as well. In the next episode of the retrospective they'll cover all the random Final Fantasy stuff like the spin-offs and movies.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/">Part I &amp; II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iii/">Part III</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iv/">Part IV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-v/">Part V</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vi/">Part VI</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vii/">Part VII</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-viii/">Part VIII</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/18/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-ix/">Final Fantasy retrospective: Part IX</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Sep 2007 10:01:00 EST. Remember when the idea of <em>Final Fantasy</em> going online sounded like a great idea, the dream of an entertaining and epic masterpiece that would revolutionize MMOs forever? Boy, were we all smoking the Moogle dung hard back then! <em>Final Fantasy XI</em>, which should have just been called <em>Final Fantasy Online</em>, brought an online experience that seemed fine at the time -- <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/">until the<em> World of Warcraft</em> came along</a>.<br /><br />According to the retrospective there are still 4 million people playing <em>Final Fantasy XI </em>and enjoying its amazing grind and unforgiving gameplay. Actually, it'd be good to hear from people who are still playing what kept them involved all this time.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/">Part I &amp; II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iii/">Part III</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iv/">Part IV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-v/">Part V</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vi/">Part VI</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vii/">Part VII</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-viii/">Final Fantasy retrospective: Part VIII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 05:22:00 EST. When Tidus comes to, he meets the summoner Lady Yuna and they proceed to have their girlish infatuation with each other for the rest of the story. They defeat Sin and save Yuna's world ... and for the first time ever, that wasn't the end of the tale.<br /><br /><em>Final Fantasy X-2</em>, love it or hate it, it was the first true sequel to a <em>Final Fantasy</em> story ever and it went all-out in breaking the traditional mold, but still gave nods to some series conventions. Three female leads, J-pop musical numbers and fashion, fashion, fashion! Many gamers dismiss <em>Final Fantasy X-2</em> -- for obvious surface reasons -- but from a purely combat perspective, it's still more truly <em>Final Fantasy</em> than the the MMO-style combat offerings coming up in <span style="font-style: italic;">Final Fantasy XI </span>and <span style="font-style: italic;">XII</span>.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/">Part I &amp; II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iii/">Part III</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iv/">Part IV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-v/">Part V</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vi/">Part VI</a><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Final Fantasy retrospective: Part VII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vii/">Final Fantasy retrospective: Part VII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 20:56:00 EST. From Metroid (Zero Mission) to Metroid Fusion, they go over the 10 games, which have sold over 13 million units and bundle up the series in a nice morph ball<br /><br />Although the games bounce back and forth in the <em>Metroid</em> timeline, it's nice to know that there's an actual cohesive story in there compared to the debatable <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/21/zelda-retrospective-the-end-my-only-friend-the-end/"><em>Legend of Zelda</em> timeline</a>. And now we look forward to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/new-games-this-week-metroid-prime-3-corruption-edition/">this week</a> when we finally get our hands on <em>Corruption</em>. Samus will be playable again in the near future with <em>Smash Bros. Brawl</em>, but we'll have to wait and see if the next full <em>Metroid</em> game takes place after <em>Fusion</em>, or if Nintendo squeezes another chapter out of the <em>Prime</em> series.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/metroid-retrospective-part-5-timeline-squished-in-a-morph-ba/">Metroid retrospective: Part 5 -- Timeline squished in a morph ball</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 11:45:00 EST. It also attempted to have the most mature plot line of any <em>Final Fantasy</em> until that point.<br /><br /><em>Final Fantasy IX</em> was a throw back to cutesy <em>Final Fantasy</em> as games started moving towards becoming definitively un-cutesy. <em>FF IX</em> was also the last game before Square wised up and decided not to vomit full video in what started to feel like every single cutscene. <br /><br />Next week GameTrailers covers <em>FFX </em>and the ultimate fashionista game for all those little boys who are going to try out for Project Runway in a few years: <em>FF X-2</em>. Whether you loved or hated <em>FF X-2</em>, those fashions were fierce.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/">Part I &amp; II</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iii/">Part III</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-iv/">Part IV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/final-fantasy-video-retrospective-part-v/">Part V</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/final-fantasy-retrospective-part-vi/">Final Fantasy retrospective: Part VI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 10:58:00 EST. Maybe not exactly the <em>Metroid</em> experience genre fans were looking for, but it was something for the road. As for Metroid Pinball -- well, you either liked it or not.<br /><br />We understand now why GameTrailers took forever to get this episode out the door this week. Turns out that they were adding a bunch of little snippets from this week's release of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/10/august-brings-metroid-and-super-metroid-to-virtual-console/"><em>Metroid</em> Channel</a> on the Wii. They take a nice plasma shot at putting the basic information we know about <em>Corruption</em> into this retrospective. The series concludes next week with a look at all the games mixed together in one gelatinous Metroid glob.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/25/metroid-retrospective-explores-first-two-games/">Part 1</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/01/metroid-retrospective-part-2-super-metroid-and-fusion/">Part 2</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/09/metroid-retrospective-part-3-metroid-prime/">Part 3</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/18/metriod-retrospective-part-4-ds-games-and-corruption/">Metroid retrospective: Part 4 -- DS games and Corruption</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 18 Aug 2007 01:00:00 EST. Although <em>Super Metroid</em> is the darling of the series, if you skipped out on buying a Gamecube, the <em>Metroid Prime</em> games are definitely a reason to get yourself a Wavebird controller for your Wii. Plus, you can <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/08/smash-bros-brawl-controllers-confirmed/">use the Wavebird</a> when <em>Brawl</em> eventually comes out. Hopefully the Wii iteration of <em>Metroid Prime</em> will bring fans to the <em>Prime</em> series, as long as that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/joystiq-impressions-metroid-prime-3-wii/2">control scheme</a> works properly. Please let those controls work properly.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/25/metroid-retrospective-explores-first-two-games/">Part 1</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/01/metroid-retrospective-part-2-super-metroid-and-fusion/">Part 2</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/09/metroid-retrospective-part-3-metroid-prime/">Metroid retrospective: Part 3 - Metroid Prime</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Aug 2007 22:23:00 EST. The game of speed-run junkies everywhere, <em>Super Metroid</em> was the power bomb back in the day. Adding almost every element we've come to expect from a <em>Metroid</em> game today exists in <em>Super Metroid</em> -- except for that whole pesky 3D thing.<br /><br />This episode also covers Samus' "final mission" in <em>Metroid Fusion</em> on the Game Boy Advance. The title is chronologically the last mission we experience with the intergalactic bounty hunter. What happens to Samus Aran after <em>Metroid Fusion</em>? Guess we'll have to wait until something not <em>Metroid Prime</em> to find out.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/25/metroid-retrospective-explores-first-two-games/">Part I</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/01/metroid-retrospective-part-2-super-metroid-and-fusion/">Metroid retrospective: Part 2 - Super Metroid and Fusion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Aug 2007 19:57:00 EST.
