Rawbots is a multiplayer game in which you build and program robots to battle other players in a sandbox arena. Designer Alex Rozgo and the Rawbots team is pitching the game on Kickstarter, where they're trying for $300,000 to deliver the product on the PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U, and possibly the PS4.

Rawbots intends to have various parts available for the making of your mechanical minions, which can then be traded with others using contracts and blueprints. The structure of the world is meant to combine different types of gameplay, enabling you to put together various levels designed for FPS or RTS-style interaction.

So far, Rawbots has only picked up a few thousand dollars, but the project has over a month to go. The team is also selling early access to the game on its website for $29.99.
Rawbots pitches custom robot battles in a sandbox originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 May 2013 21:00:00 EST.
This is Pragmatica. It's a programming-based puzzler set in a not-too-distant future, in which robots have, somewhat controversially, all but replaced humans as the world's industrial labour force. The largest and most powerful robotics firm, Pragmatica, hires you as a programmer, tasking you with writing programs to solve tasks using their expensive and highly volatile robots. Gameplay-wise, this means combine actions and conditions (SEE-WALL, TURN-RIGHT) into a program, then hitting the launch button and watching the robots execute it to complete the task, or crash and burn trying.
Continue reading The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Pragmatica

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Pragmatica originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Jul 2011 22:30:00 EST. Wired has a fascinating (if a little long) read up about how Microsoft's Kinect hardware is changing the robotics industry. For a long time, robotics has been held back, not by technology that defines how robots move, but by a lack of understanding of their environments -- a robot that can't "see" or recognize its surroundings won't have any idea where to go. Most solutions to this problem were too expensive or unwieldy to use in a lot of robotics applications.

But the Kinect has made that much easier, providing what's basically a sub-$500 kit that can recognize humans, their movements and almost any other objects around the room. And while Kinect hacks first began as a push by unofficial open source engineers, Microsoft has more or less made that kind of stuff official, both by providing developer kits for programmers and by supporting community mods.

So let it be known: Just a few years from now, when Skynet is chasing you down after capturing your loved ones to work in the slave camps, it'll be thanks to Kinect that those robots can see and hunt you while moving across the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Kinect helping robots see and recognize environment originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 03:00:00 EST. Let's be honest -- you're buying Portal 2 (who isn't, right?) and, since it's a Valve game, you probably want to just pick it up on Steam, right? Not so fast -- GameStop is going to do its best to convince you otherwise. The retail chain is offering both a $5 discount on the Aperture Science training program emulator as well as the chance to get two exclusive "custom bots" for the multiplayer co-op portion of the game if you preorder with them.

What do said bots look like? We don't yet know -- what you see above is what we've got so far. They could be black instead of white, or even branded with official GameStop employee t-shirts (actually, that might be pretty rad). But the thought of extra content, GameStop hopes, might be enough to entice you away from a digital download, and back to buying an actual disc at a retail store. We know you're likely still occupied with the past week's pair of major blockbusters, but it'd be a shame if the release of a certain Small Wonder went unheralded by this blog. Enter: Machinarium, an impossibly charming, jaw-droppingly gorgeous adventure title for Windows, Mac and Linux which, after wooing us last month at PAX, is now available to purchase for a cool $20.

Not sure how you feel about hand-drawn adventure games featuring the misadventures of an adorable, mute robot? We suggest checking out the free demo of the game hosted on the game's official site. If you're still not enticed, we suggest getting a chest x-ray, because it sounds like there's a small chance that your heart is missing.
Nintendo fans may not be able to get their hands on Bionic Commando, but Capcom may have something even better for Wii owners. Spyborgs has its own <strike>bionic</strike> cybernetic arm-enhanced warrior, and it's but one of three characters you can play as in Spyborgs.

So, what are the Spyborgs? They're an elite team of good guys, each with a unique cybernetic attachment. However, a former Spyborg has gone rogue, capturing heroes in an evil attempt to -- wait for it -- TAKE OVER THE WORLD! Or, at the very least, make himself into a god. Just another day in the life of a video game, right? In Spyborgs, players will choose to play as one of the three remaining team members: Stinger, the Bionic Commando wannabe; Clandestine, a nimble, skinny female ninja; and Bouncer, a linebacker-ish robo-dude.

Gallery: Spyborgs (Wii)

Joystiq hands-on: Spyborgs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 May 2009 21:00:00 EST.
Studio Zan is lining up a November release in Japan for Overturn, a new vehicular combat game that sees manga characters (who look oddly out of place next to the game's 3D arenas) take control of hulking great robots.

Overturn has yet to be priced or confirmed for a western release, but a Game Watch preview reveals that it will come with a Story mode, local multiplayer, WiFi play for upto four players, Balance Board compatibility, and full online leaderboards.
Tecmo has a pretty decent lineup of upcoming games for the DS, and Robocalypse is one on the list that's managed to catch our eye. We're even more intrigued after watching this interview with Ryan Gilbo (who also did a pretty good job of selling Tecmo Bowl Kickoff to us).

If a robot-based RTS with a B-movie feel isn't enough to capture your attention, you probably won't care about the other things Robocalypse has to offer. If you love robots (and the RTS genre), though, you definitely need to take a look at this game.

We can only hope at this point that it's as fun as Gilbo makes it out to be.
Tecmo producer talks Robocalypse originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 21:00:00 EST.
We immediately cried out, "Bullshots!" when we sighted these screenshots released with Battle Rage: The Robot Wars' Wii press release today, but then we remembered that a PC version of the fighter is also in the works.

With a quick comparison comparing the image resolution with other screens for Wii games (and a bit of common sense), we were able to confirm our suspicions that these shots are, indeed, too good to be true. That said, if graphical detail isn't a primary concern for you, jump into the gallery for three new screenshots of the four-player arena combat game.

And, while the images might not be for the Wii release, there's no doubt that this European boxart is! The cover actually looks badass, you know, despite Data Design Interactive's out-of-place Popcorn Arcade branding.

Details about the actual game: 20 weapons, 10 arenas, 8 robots, special melee/ranged weapons for each robot, customizable robots, arcade mode, team battles, 2036 setting, yadda yadda yadda, convicts trying to earn their freedom by battling mechs for a bored society's entertainment.

[Via press release]
Battle Rage looks fantastic (for the PC) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 May 2008 09:45:00 EST. Battle Rage: The Robot Wars evokes a lot of things that are awesome in video games: Battle. Rage. Robots. Also war. That title tells you pretty much what's going to be happening in Destan Entertainment's fighting game, which had been announced for PC but as yet unpublished, and is now being released for Wii. When we initially heard about Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball, our first question was, "what about zombies and robots?" (Actually, we first wondered why pirates had top-billing, but that would've led to a long and pointless debate.) Fortunately, developer Blazing Lizard heard our cry and sent assurance that zombies and robots were, indeed, ready to fight.
Don't ask us how we managed it (we've done things of which we are not proud), but we've managed to snag the exclusive details behind the latest team in Blazing Lizard's Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball, Robots. We have concept art and details on each team member, including their background and special moves. Not only that, but we've got shots of the Robots' dodgeball court as well. We've piled all the shots and information into a special gallery that you'll find embedded below. Peruse them all and ponder whether or not the combined might of pirates and ninjas can topple the indomitable Robot army.

Did we not warn you that this would happen? Did we not explicitly state that our mechanical slaves would one day rise and turn their iron claws against us? Well, that day of retribution has finally come -- humanity has been living on borrowed time, and the robots have come collect.

Developed by <strike>Russian</strike> New Jersey studio Vogster, Robocalypse -- or Kaboom Kaboom, as it was previously known by -- is an RTS armed with a humorous script penned by Spongebob Squarepants writers Jay Lender and Micah Wright. According to the plot details released so far, automatons have been accidentally programmed with military routines (Why do people keep doing this?!) and are now out to destroy the human race. Another batch of droids with implanted "brain scans of retired WWII vets" have been sent out to fight back the rebel robots and delay our inevitable extinction.

As every RTS on the DS should, Robocalypse will feature versus and cooperative modes for 2-4 players online when it ships out this spring. You can expect complete touchscreen control, 20+ unique weapons, 10+ distinct robot types, and "hero characters" with special powers like Conversion, the ability to turn enemies into refrigerators. Here are a few headlines that enunciate the differences in perception between the gaming hardcore and the general public:

Forbes: "Can The Wii Save Your Life?"

The Mercury News went so far as to fashion together an automaton (see image above) out of coils and Wii scraps in order to illustrate Nintendo's domination. We'd be too scared to even compete with the company, knowing that this ED-209-esque villain could break into our houses and stamp us out at any moment. Jump past the post break for a better view of its hulking figure.
Continue reading E307: Mainstream press loves WiiFit, constructs Wii robot as tribute

E307: Mainstream press loves WiiFit, constructs Wii robot as tribute originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 14:45:00 EST. While this release already includes the alternative UCS storyline from the PlayStation remake, five new missions specific to the DS version have also been added.

RPGamer had a chance to sit down with producer Koichiro Sakamoto to discuss the handheld port and his thoughts on bringing more Front Mission games to the DS. According to the interview, were it not for the campaigning of a particular team member, North America might not have received the game: "There was one [who] was very passionate about the game, and wanted to give players in the United States the chance to experience. He felt that Front Mission 3 and 4 proved that there is a userbase, and since the DS is currently very popular, the thinking went, 'Why not give it a try?'"

Continue reading E307: Front Mission DS interview and media galore

E307: Front Mission DS interview and media galore originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 11:30:00 EST. Developed by Naked Sky Entertainment, RoboBlitz sees you guiding a charming little contraption through all manner of gear-grating, cog-crunching puzzles and ridding the world of nasty space pirates. You know, pirates. But in space.

Other key phrases you might associate with RoboBlitz are "physics-driven challenges," "Unreal Engine 3" and "available this Wednesday, December 6, at 1AM PST." According to the press release (read it after the break), the trial version will offer three different levels in its attempt to get 1200 MS points (that's $15) out of you for the full game. As one of the more expensive titles on Microsoft's service, its argument will have to be persuasive indeed. Penny-pinchers might also consider the Steam version on PC -- at $14.99, it makes for a saving of one whole cent.
Continue reading RoboBlitz hitting Xbox Live Arcade this week

RoboBlitz hitting Xbox Live Arcade this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Dec 2006 20:45:00 EST. Robots, of course! According to PC World, Microsoft has decided to develop a software tool kit just for robotics. The software will allow robots to interface with Windows PCs, effectively giving Microsoft control of the impending Robot Apocalypse(R). Of particular interest is the following excerpt:

"Microsoft's entry to the field is a vote of confidence that could accelerate the development of robots for industrial, service, and entertainment use."

Entertainment use? Could we finally see the next gen equivalent of R.O.B. the robot? Perhaps a robot to fetch <strike>beer</strike> refreshments when you're too busy killing other robots?

The possibilities are endless. A preview of the software is available now for the robot enthusiasts out there.

I cautiously approached the frightening man-machine hybrid and was relieved to find that underneath the metallic shine and pulsing red eyes was a passionate gamer eager to get his hands on Nintendo's new games. Yanier Gonzalez decided several months ago that, in order to get into E3, he would have to create a distinctive gaming website. The result was Destructoid, a nifty independent blog that has since become a real passion for Yanier. He told me that he was eager to try out The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and would gladly spend hours in line to give "average Joes" a glimpse at what goes on at E3. Kudos to Destructoid, and thanks for letting me borrow your home-made robot head!
Continue reading Waiting for Wii: And I'll form the head!

Waiting for Wii: And I'll form the head! originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 May 2006 18:45:00 EST.
