"Cheery," "colorful" and "cute" are all words that describe the recently released box art (and new screenshots) for the Wii's upcoming Roogoo Twisted Towers and the DS' Roogoo Attack. Admittedly, block for block, these Roogoo boxes have shaped up quite nicely. Except for the large and out of place red circle block on the Attack box. It's just trying too hard to steal our attention away from the green triangles and blue squares of the world! That's just twisted and shameful.

Kid-friendly Roogoo Twisted Towers and Attack box art originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. When we first got our filthy mitts on a demo of Xbox Live puzzler Roogoo way back when, we noted its deceiving looks in comparison to its addictive and surprisingly complex gameplay. Nearly a year later and we're back in the same position, though this time we're playing Wii and DS iterations Roogoo Twisted Towers and Roogoo Attack! (respectively).

Checking out a demo of each before this weekend's New York Comic Con, we walked away smiling once again -- childish looks and throwaway story aside, Roogoo Twisted Towers and Roogoo Attack! look to be shaping up very well.

Gallery: Roogoo Twisted Towers

Continue reading NYCC 09: Roogoo Twisted Towers and Roogoo Attack! hands-on

NYCC 09: Roogoo Twisted Towers and Roogoo Attack! hands-on originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 08 Feb 2009 22:00:00 EST. We do actually know most of these dates already (so yeah, maybe the mushroom cloud is a bit excessive), but there's still the occasional scrap of new news buried within.

Those Tenchu and Little King's Story dates are fresh to us, and there's also confirmation of the first Play on Wii "New Play Control" games, Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis. For the record, "New Play Control" is a bit of a rubbish name for the series. In our humble opinion, obviously.

Make the jump for the full line-up, and remember you can click on a game's name to bring up screens (where available)!

Continue reading Nintendo unleashes full Q1 schedule

Nintendo unleashes full Q1 schedule originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 11:46:00 EST. We've known for a few months now that XBLA title Roogoo was being ported to the DS and now we finally have some screens to ogle. The screens are bright and colorful, showing us that Roogoo hasn't lost its visual appeal in the jump to DS.According to the fact sheet, the game will not only be a visual treat, but it will also support multi-card play, featuring "6+ different multiplayer attacks such as Meemoo Attack, Anvil Attack and Meteor Shape Color Attack." Roogoo DS is currently slated for a Q1 2009 release.

Hit up our gallery below and check out the fresh screens.

[Via press release]
Go ga-ga over Roogoo screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 17:02:00 EST. Having announced just yesterday that they've purchased Gamecock, SouthPeak Games has gotten right back to business, sending out art and the first screens for Roogoo Twisted Towers, the Wii version of SpiderMonk's Xbox Live Arcade game Roogoo.

Twisted Towers will feature the same basic gameplay as Roogoo, involving rotating floating disks to allow meteors to fall through same-shaped holes. Twisted Towers adds boss fights, horizontal levels, and co-op play throughout the game. The DS and Wii versions will be able to interface to unlock new levels in all 10 of Roogoo's worlds. There will also be a 4-player mode that includes Roogoo-based party games.

[Via press release]
Roogoo Twisted Towers art and screens drop in originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 14:40:00 EST. What is a Roogoo, exactly? Well, it's not quite a kangaroo, not quite a pile of goo, but ... we have no idea. While everyone stumbles around trying to figure out these mysterious things, SouthPeak Games had an idea of its own -- bring the colorful puzzler to Wii and DS!

Previously available on XBLA, the Wii version will naturally use motion controls for its core gameplay. You'll be tasked with guiding meteors through rotating platforms, which will apparently stop the evil Meemoos from draining the energy of the planet. Pffft. That doesn't sound very realistic, does it? What are games coming to?

Roogoo will feature multiplayer action for up to four players, in co-op, competitive and "party" modes. Additions to the Wii version are evident, but explained only as "gameplay twists." Well, if you say so. We're actually looking forward to it, because the recent round of puzzle games have been top-notch. Check out the XBLA trailer at DS Fanboy for Roogoo in motion.

[Via press release]
Goo-d news for Roogoo gurus originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 17:00:00 EST.
Only a month ago, SouthPeak Games released a delightfully adorable puzzle title called Roogoo to XBLA. Now the game is Nintendo-bound, as the company recently announced it for both the Wii and DS. So, why is this a good thing? For starters, in addition to its positive critical reception, Roogoo is just cu-ute. Art style aside, this puzzler also looks simple (yet challenging). You have to help the planet Roo by guiding oddly-shaped, colorful meteors through rotating platforms. If you succeed, you'll stop the Meemoos from draining the planet's energy and resources. Take a look at the XBLA trailer above for a better idea of what you have to do.

The DS version will include new levels, backgrounds, and puzzle shapes. Interestingly, there's also a bit of DS-Wii connectivity for owners of both games. Oddly enough, you'll be able to use the DS as a controller for the Wii version.

We're curious about the game's price point. It only costs $10 on XBLA and $20 on PCs, but surely it will retail for more on the DS. We bet it hits the $30 mark, even. Hopefully the portability factor, new levels, and touchscreen controls will make any monetary increase worth it.

SouthPeak Games, publisher of Two Worlds as well as the uber-cute DS title Ninjatown, has secured an impressive $12.9 million in private funding. As reported by VC blog VentureBeat's Dean Takahashi, the financing is particularly interesting given that most investments of this sort are directed at the online games, virtual worlds or social networks, rather than the more traditional console and PC game space that SouthPeak calls home.

The company will have no shortage of projects on which to blow its newfound cash, with a number of other titles on deck including XBLA puzzler Roogoo, Monster Madness: Grave Danger for the PS3, and The Temptation, which is totally not-an-expansion to Two Worlds. With multiple sequels planned, Takahashi also notes that the pub sees last year's Xbox 360 and PC RPG as its biggest success to date, though it's a sentiment obviously measured in something other than review scores.
Two Worlds publisher obtains $12.9m in funding originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Jun 2008 22:30:00 EST. This time, we examine Aces of the Galaxy and Roogoo. Aces of the Galaxy is an on-rails space shooter, whereas Roogoo is a puzzle game. What are the odds that both of them are actually pretty good? Frankly, we think those odds are fairly slim, but we're happy to say that both games manage to impress in their own way. It's not often we read a press release lauding a game for "[updating] the square peg in round hole premise to a whole new level," but that's just how Roogoo is described. You can find out for yourself this Wednesday, either through the demo or by plopping down a virtual Alexander Hamilton (800 MS points).

Also coming this Wednesday (and also for 800 MS points) is Aces of the Galaxy, which looks to be a frenetic on-rails space shooter for those who haven't gotten their space shooter fills with Ikaruga. Both titles will be available this Wednesday, June 4 at 4:00 a.m. Joystiq Standard Time.
If you've got Microsoft Points burning a hole in your pocket, and are left wanting for yet another Xbox Live Arcade puzzler, next Wednesday's release of Roogoo may be just up your alley. Publisher SouthPeak has announced that it will drop the puzzle game onto the service for 800 MS Points ($10), promising all the fun you and up to three other players can have by sliding pegs of different shapes into their appropriate holes ... all while trying to save an alien race.

While the game draws more than a little influence from toys aimed at toddlers, our recent hands-on time with Roogoo still managed to keep us entertained, though you can judge for yourself when the puzzler drops onto XBLA on June 4.
Heard of Roogoo? Don't worry if you haven't. It's fallen a little under the radar, but our recent hands-on with this XBLA title has us hankering for more. Describing the game's premise does it little justice, simply because it seems like something that would barely entertain a three year old. However, under the game's cute exterior and almost-mindlessly simple gameplay lies a lot of depth and fun.

Roogoo follows one of the cardinal rules of the puzzle genre: inexplicably, things are falling from the sky. Blocks of various shapes will descend from above, and players must rotate platforms to allow these shapes to continue their journey downward. We're certain you've played with preschool toys that are similar to this: star goes in star, triangle goes in triangle, box goes in box, etc. The shoulder buttons rotate the platforms, and the A button lets you accelerate the falling piece.

As we warned, this description does little to make the game sound very entertaining. Trust me, I had the same reservations as you're probably thinking when approaching this title. However, things get surprisingly (almost embarassingly) difficult later on. Enemies will spawn in holes, and can only be knocked off by accelerating blocks on their heads. Blocks won't only come down faster, but they'll come down more than one at a time, forcing players to look at multiple levels of play at the same time. Jumping to one of the later levels had us reach miserable failure in a matter of seconds, as we collapsed under the overwhelming weight of colorful children's blocks.
Southpeak has released some new screens from their upcoming lineup of 360 titles All told, there are new screens for X-Blades, Roogoo, Things on Wheels. A quick refresher: X-Blades is an action game starring a typically sexy heroine with big weapons. Roogoo is a colorful, intriguing puzzle game. Things on Wheels is a racer featuring RC cars racing through household environments. X-Blades is a retail release, while both Roogoo and Things on Wheels are Xbox Live Arcade titles. Check out the galleries after the break for all the new media.
Continue reading New shots of X-Blades, Things on Wheels, and Roogoo

New shots of X-Blades, Things on Wheels, and Roogoo originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 May 2008 17:30:00 EST.
Having revealed games before, the German games rating board the USK is at it again, exposing previously unknown XBLA games. Shown over at xblah.net there are a myriad of titles across several genres, but the most stand out title would have to be a virtual version of the classic board-game Ticket To Ride in which players compete to build railroads across the countryside. From the sound of things it'll be similar to the conversion from the board game version of The Settlers of Catan and the XBLA version, Catan.

The other titles rated by the USK include the Penny Arcade XBLA game, the puzzler RooGoo, and a golf game entitled Golf: Tee it Up! Not only that, but there were also a few more games revealed by the American ratings board, the ESRB. Those two games were the ancient computer game Lode Runner, and the card game simulator Gin Rummy. None of these titles are official of course, but as with all games revealed in this fashion we must remember that rating's boards are not in the business of making of games, nor is having a game rated at all cheap. This is great news though, and should portend the approaching release of said titles. With such an ever expanding library of titles it seems XBLA is really coming into it's own, catering to a variety of demographics and hopefully with something for everyone.

German Ratings Board reveals a slew of XBLA titles originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Mar 2008 09:15:00 EST. Two Worlds didn't exactly make SouthPeak a household name, and we're willing to bet Roogoo won't either (oh well, there's always Ninjatown). But the North Carolina publisher has thankfully taken a step back from last year's grandiose flop and teamed with developer SpiderMonk Entertainment to release a simpler project, Roogoo. The game title lacks any coherent meaning, until you consider that gameplay is based on the simple concept of matching different-shaped blocks to corresponding holes -- an exercise many of us practiced back in diapers. And so, "roogoo" is perhaps a nod to those days of gurgling baby-speak.

In development for Xbox Live Arcade and Windows, Roogoo is better described as a puzzle game which "tasks players with guiding meteors in the form of shaped blocks though a series of rotating disks as a means of saving planet Roo and the entire Roogoo race." Didn't you know? Your parents were training you to one day save a doomed alien race! Roogoo is slated for release this April.
Simply put, it's a puzzle game where players try to help settle the battle over planet "Roo" by rotating floating discs (which look a lot like those rolling shape baby toys) so that the falling shapes can land on the planet below. Simple enough. Now, since that's out of the way, allow us to gush over the game's art style. It's delicious! So friendly, so welcoming, so ... overly fun! We dare say yum'alicious times four!
