"The overwhelming thing we've discovered is that rumble is such a rudimentary form of haptic feedback," he said. "It's not like a little rumble in your palm is your whole way of interacting with the world - it's not like, oh, I stubbed my toe and I get a little rumble in my palm." The audiovisual presentation of Kinect games, he said, does more to immerse people than rumble, as evidenced by the instinctive reactions he observed from players. "In many of the games we have, people will crash a vehicle and they'll go totally like this [mimes dodging out of the way]! And even people playing games with a controller, there's always people doing this [mimes driving motion]."

Tsunoda went on to sort of address the nagging question of lag. "The way we measure 'lag' is by putting people in front of the experience and measuring their thoughts. Either it feels good or it feels sloppy. It's not how many milliseconds, it's: 'Does it feel good? Does it react fast? Does it feel as if you're in control?'" So what is important isn't the amount of lag, but the perception of lag.
Tsunoda downplays lack of rumble in Kinect originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jul 2010 18:30:00 EST. Our biggest complaint about the DS Lite has been its woefully small number of LED lights. Thank goodness for modders then, because Tailor Made Toys has crafted the flashy DS Lite you see above. The kicker? It also has force feedback, which comes in two flavors: one is just normal rumble, while the other is a sort of "sensitive mode," best for quieter games and when using headphones.

And if you want to commission one of these for yourself, you can get your own handheld modded for £40. We're not sure what that squiggly line in front of the 40 means, but there it is. Head past the break for a video showing off the mod.
Sony's R&D guru Richard Marks made a recent appearance on the PlayStation.Blog to talk more about the PlayStation Motion Controller. In a new seven minute video (after the break), Marks spent a bit more time going through the various technology demos first unveiled during E3. While Sony commented that the ball-on-a-stick design was simply a prototype, the controller in Marks's hand doesn't appear to be very different (if at all) to what was shown earlier this year.

In addition to reiterating claims of its accuracy and the importance of tactile buttons, Marks mentioned a few details that you may not have known about the controller. Firstly, he talks about the controller's analog trigger: "It has this analog trigger which really is a great metaphor for squeezing and grabbing. So you can grab and you can put as much pressure as you want to grab something with, which is really great for picking things up or for giving you the ability to just interact with the scene in a way that's completely different than we've been able to do before."

Next, he confirms that the controller will be able to rumble, much like Nintendo's Wii Remote. "It can give you some feedback about what's happening through rumble, which is very private and only you are getting." Private? We're not sure that's the best word (note: link slightly NSFW) to use when describing force feedback.
Continue reading Analog trigger squeezes its way onto PlayStation Motion Controller

Analog trigger squeezes its way onto PlayStation Motion Controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 16:00:00 EST. It's been more than two years since Immersion and Sony settled their kerfluffle over the latter party's infringement on the former's "haptic feedback" (rumble) technology. However, Sony's not quite out of the woods yet -- it's currently the subject of yet another civil suit, filed this time by Craig Thorner, an engineer who also held a number of patents relating to haptic feedback.

Brace yourselves -- this gets confusing. After its settlement with Sony, Immersion was set to take on Performance Designed Products (PDP) for similar rumble-yoinking reasons. PDP contacted Thorner for some pre-litigious preparation. They negotiated terms for the licensing of his patents -- though Thorner used the same lawyers who represented Sony to help with said negotiation. His complaint is that these lawyers got him unfavorable results in the negotiation, including low royalty payments, and the inclusion of a provision that would grant a patent license to Sony.

So, technically, Sony's getting sued for patent infringement and legal malpractice. Hopefully, no suspected shady dealings will go down in this case. We'd hate to see Sony get stuck in some sort of inescapable infinite lawsuit loop.

Update: Turns out we've already turned your attention to this intense legal showdown. Consider this a helpful accidental reminder!
Sony to never stop getting sued for rumble technology originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 May 2009 13:55:00 EST. Microsoft has won its claim against rumble licensor Immersion Corp., receiving $20.75 million from the company, Reuters reports. The above shakycam video reveals the early fruits of his labor -- so far, only three levels and one character (Mario) are available. Dutch site PlayStation Only has heard from a "reliable source" that Dualshock 3 controllers will finally be made available in Europe on the 2nd of May this year. There's no word on pricing and the date hasn't been confirmed by Sony, so this is firmly a rumor for now. With America's April release date fast approaching, Europeans are itchy to find out when they'll finally be able to get their hands on them. Most games (certainly, all high profile and first party titles) all support rumble out of the box, or via a mandatory patch so the earlier the controllers are released, the better.
Rumor: Dualshock 3s available in Europe on May 2nd originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 16:10:00 EST. Nyko's Zero controller beats Sony's DualShock 3 to the US market. Unlike any other third party controller out there, Nyko's Zero features both tilt and rumble functionality. We received our test unit today, and found it satisfactory. For the impatient that need rumble now (and don't want to bother importing a DualShock), the Zero will undeniably satisfy. However, there are a number of flaws in its design that make it hard to recommend whole-heartedly.

Firstly, we commend Nyko for creating such easy-to-open packaging. With a simple cut of a sticker, we were able to get the controller out -- no plastic wrap packages that threaten to cut your fingers off. Another thing we were pleasantly surprised by: the use of a detachable battery pack. Two are included in the package: the standard rechargable pack, and one that accepts AA batteries. We appreciate the flexibility.

Continuing the unboxing, we were disappointed to see that the Zero uses a dongle, just like Guitar Hero III. You will need to sacrifice one of the USB ports on your PS3 in order to use this controller. For owners of the 40GB system, this simply won't do. Sony's Bluetooth solution is obviously much more elegant, as it allows the USB ports to be free, and it makes it possible to turn on the system by pressing the PS button. The Zero cannot do that.

Continue reading Hands-on with Nyko's Zero controller

Hands-on with Nyko's Zero controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST.
Sony once called rumble a "last generation feature," but secretly, somewhere, someone was designing DualShock 3 (and waiting for legal matters to settle). The race was on! (And quietly won by Logitech last June.) Still, someone had yet to release the 'ultimate' PS3 gamepad, which would combine the awesome powers of six-degree motion and palm-numbing vibration. (Actually, Sony did that last November -- in Japan.) Yet still, US PS3 owners where without such wizardry until today, when Nyko's Zero Wireless Controller -- packing hex-directional gesturetech(R) and rumble -- hit retail for $60. Too bad this hard-featured controller has a mere 40 days before it becomes irrelevant.
Before we even get our hands on a first party controller (besides importing), no less. So, if you really want to, you can purchase the wireless monstrosity pictured above. It retails for $59.99, which is $5 more than the DualShock 3 will retail at. No, that's not a rhetorical question (though our answer would be "not at all better") ... it's the web site introduction to the Mindwire V5, a new British product that replaces those annoyingly rough rumbling controller sensation with a series of gentle, soothing electric shocks. Ahhh, bliss.

Using a special controller converter (pictured) and a series of five adhesive pads, the V5 sends force-feedback activated shocks that the web site compares to those of a muscle toning machine. While the device will work with practically any game, the site recommends using it to enhance fighters and first-person shooters (just be sure to stay away from Rez)

Though the site advertises plenty of safety features, the litany of warnings makes us worry about how safe this device actually is. It's probably moot for us, though --- at £99 (about $196), this one is only for well-off masochists.

Also see: Military sim "shoots" back

[Via Pocket Lint, Thanks Foolio]
Device converts controller rumble to electric shocks originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Mar 2008 12:20:00 EST. Ars Technica's seemingly reliable inside source has snuck out of the shadows with another interesting bit of hardware "news". We know that the 80GB PS3 is being discontinued, even if Sony won't admit to it themselves. The rumour is that another SKU (for those of you playing at home, that's the fifth since launch) will take the place of the 80GB, and will come bundled with a Dual Shock 3 controllers. Prices will stay the same, but the new SKU will have a 120-160GB hard drive.

The article doesn't indicate whether the new SKU will have backwards compatibility, memory card readers, more than two USB ports or, you know, whether it even really exists. We're not convinced that this is the best idea - the 40GB has been the only SKU available in Europe for a wee while now and it's doing great. Why such a big hard drive? Is there something coming soon that is going to require so much storage space? We know Sony have been discussing video and music downloads for quite some time, so is it finally on the horizon?

Speculation on this can go on forever. We're going to remain skeptical until something concrete appears. If it's anything like the 40GB or 80GB revelations, we'll know it's coming a few weeks before it's "announced".
Rumour: 120GB+ PS3 on its way in rumble bundle? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 09:35:00 EST. The PS3-exclusive action game, Heavenly Sword recently got a 1.10 patch. Right now, the contents of this 18MB download are mysterious. It has been confirmed that DualShock 3 support has finally been added to the game, for those lucky enough to have imported the rumble-ready controller. But, certainly the patch must hold other surprises. 18MB is a lot of data for just rumble alone ...
Heavenly Sword gets patched to 1.1 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 Dec 2007 21:50:00 EST. And that doesn't just include letting you spin two (count 'em!) two analog sticks while you're catching monkeys with a net. No, friends, you'll also be able to feel the visceral thrill of rumbling as you whack the monkeys with your stun club. ... Or, you know, play other PS2 games that don't involve catching monkeys. The DualShock 3's rumbling abilities with PS2 games, which only a few would have noticed by now, was apparently added by the PS3's 2.0 firmware.

So the DualShock 3 is the newest gen of a next-gen peripheral now reaching back through time to accommodate a last-gen feature on last-gen games. But the only PS3s that support it will be those that play last-gen games, a feature that itself has become last-gen. We've honestly lost count of the layers of irony. Many importers have been curious: does the new rumble-ready DualShock 3 work for PS2 games played on the PS3? The answer is yes (provided you don't have the 40GB model -- you won't be able to play PS2 games at all!). With rumble being slowly reintroduced to the system, it appears that PS3 will finally be able to do everything the PS2 offered last generation ... and then some.

DualShock 3 will rumble with PS2 games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 09:40:00 EST. Our Tokyo-based Engadget friend just sent us a nasty e-mail that went along the lines of "I have it, you don't SUCKAS." What are we talking about? The rumble-ready white DualShock 3 controller. Watch as he mercilessly opens the packaging, something Americans will have to wait until next year to do. Let's hope that the mighty blister pack gods will shame him with a cut or two as he undoubtedly tears apart the package with rabid glee.
DualShock 3 launches in Japan, gets unboxed originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 09:19:00 EST. Many flocked to various import websites when Sony announced the rumble-ready DualShock 3 at Tokyo Game Show earlier this year. However, it looks like production of Sony's long-awaited peripheral won't meet the mountainous demand for the controller. Quantities will be quite scarce, as seen by Play-Asia's pre-orders already being sold out: "this is a product with limited availability and our allocations have been pre-sold."

Importer NCSX also expects demand to increase the cost of importing a controller. They have some advice for those that want a rumble controller: to wait. "If prices ratchet up too high, we'd advise patience since prices should eventually drop to normalcy within 2-3 weeks after the Japanese debut." Of course, if you're bothering to import a controller, chances are you want it as soon as possible.

Sony has not yet set a date for a North American release of the controller. It is expected to debut some time in the Spring. The controller will retail for 5500 yen (appx. US$47).
DualShock 3 imports to be scarce originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Nov 2007 14:00:00 EST. Import retailers are warning non-Japanese consumers that the DualShock 3, Sony's contrition controller, will be in extremely limited supply when it goes on sale Nov. 11. Importers like Play Asia say they've already pre-sold their expected supply. Sony obviously doesn't like import retailers, but they should take it as a good sign that consumers are keen to import the new DualShock 3 controller before its spring release in the States and Europe early next year. Importers are allegedly charging about $80 USD (£40) for what will probably be $50 (assuming it's the same price as the Sixaxis when it comes across the ocean).

But, but, but why would you want to import the DualShock 3 when the rumble won't work with many old games? Well, Resistance: Fall of Man is patched to accept rumble and we're <strike>expecting</strike> hoping that other games have rumble added onto them soon. We're not going to make any "rumble is last generation" cracks because we're just happy Sony is bringing back the rumble. You really don't know what you've got till it's gone.
DualShock 3 supplies low; import cost high originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Nov 2007 12:33:00 EST. Ratchet & Clank Future (available in retail stores soon) is the first retail PS3 game to support rumble out of the box. DualShock 3 controllers will be available in Japan in November and in America next year.

[Via Joystiq]
Firmware 1.94 adds DualShock rumble support originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Oct 2007 15:30:00 EST. If you want to experience rumble with your PS3 games as soon as possible, you're going to have to go on a quest of sorts. First, time travel into next month (or wait a couple of weeks) and import a DualShock 3 from Japan. Next, you're going to need the PS3's new firmware, 1.94, but sadly, it isn't available for download yet.

But don't be deterred. Shacknews is reporting that if you pick up Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (the first retail game with built-in rumble support) you'll be able to find 1.94 right there on the disc. Imagine the convenience. Now, unless you have obsessive compulsive disorder, we have no idea why you'd need the firmware weeks before the controller's even out. But at least we know a certain former Double Dare host is going to sleep well tonight.
PS3's 1.94 firmware adds support for DualShock 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Oct 2007 15:05:00 EST. While the announcement that Sony would finally bring the DualShock 3 to the PS3 excited us all, we couldn't help but feel a little underwhelmed when we realized the controller would utilize the same rumble technology found in the DualShock 2.

However, if Immersion CEO Vic Viegas has his way, the DualShock 3 will be just the first-generation rumble controller for the PS3. "Immersion is very motivated and very interested in working with [Sony] to bring the next generation of gaming technology because the gamers deserve a full, immersive environment where you can match high-fidelity graphics and sound with high-quality haptics," he said. "We're hoping [the DualShock 3] will be just the first step towards integrating the next-generation technology."

What makes this prospective upgrade even more plausible is the fact that Viegas says the upgrade will actually be cheaper since the old technology uses two motors, while Immersion's TouchSense technology only needs one to achieve better results. "Immersion is already committed that we won't charge anything extra for the next technology. We have a standard royalty rate ... we don't want to make this more expensive and give anyone a reason not to implement it," Viegas said.
Immersion wants Sony to upgrade rumble technology originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 14:15:00 EST. Immersion CEO Vic Viegas says in an interview with GameDaily that he doesn't understand why Sony decided to put the DualShock 2's rumble technology into the DualShock 3, considering he believes the new next-gen rumble technology is cheaper. Viegas says, "The old technology utilizes two motors to create the complex set of sensations, whereas Immersion's new TouchSense technology utilizes a single motor, but we drive the motor in unique ways so that you can get stronger yet crisper effects." He says the one motor uses less power, "the cost to implement is less expensive than the old tech" and he says they won't charge Sony extra.

Viegas also talked a little about handhelds and implementing rumble into the DS or PSP. Currently Nintendo does not license its vibration tech from Immersion and may be working on their own ways of bringing rumble to the DS. As to whether Immersion might sue Nintendo one day like they did Sony, Viegas says, "We have not yet formally taken a position on whether it's infringing or not infringing any of our IP." Then again, if Nintendo can afford $18 million in Wiimote jackets, licensing some next-gen rumble might be an afterthought for them.
Immersion CEO on next-gen rumble and possible Nintendo IP infringement originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 09:00:00 EST. Sony Computer Entertainment America's Kimberly Otzman, corporate communications, confirmed to GameDaily BIZ, what we suspected all along: "The rumble feature on the DualShock 3 is the same as DualShock 2." The controller does not feature any new advanced form of rumbling, as some internet forums have been murmuring.

In addition to talking about the rumble technology, Otzman revealed information about the battery life, noting that "battery life depends on how often the rumble feature is used." She added, "When the rumble feature is completely turned off, it's equivalent with the Sixaxis (maximum of 30 hours) and when the rumble feature is active it's about 15 hours, under SCE standard testing conditions."

Obviously, battery life will be shorted with rumble. For those that are going to get the new rumble controllers, get ready to use your USB cables a lot more regularly.
"Rumble feature on the DualShock 3 is the same as DualShock 2" originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Sep 2007 16:30:00 EST. Remember when Sony's Phil Harrison called rumble a "last generation feature?" Well, can't call the man a liar because he was absolutely right! GameDaily BIZ confirmed with Sony today that the technology in the recently announced DualShock 3 is identical to that in the DualShock 2. So anybody expecting Immersion's next-gen rumble technology can just let those dreams pass into the ether.

As for battery life, the DualShock 3 will last approximately 15 hours with the rumble feature on, and 30 hours (the same as the Sixaxis) with it off. As for the DualShock 3 replaces the Sixaxis, Sony Corporate Communications' Kimberly Otzman says, "Nothing has been decided yet, stay tuned." The natural assumption would be the DualShock 3 will replace the Sixaxis across the board by holiday '08, but don't expect any announcements like that until early next year.
It is a last gen feature; DualShock 3 same tech as DualShock 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Sep 2007 15:25:00 EST. At their Tokyo Game Show press conference today, Sony finally revealed how the PS3 got its groove back. Kaz Hirai announced that the DualShock 3 -- a Sixaxis controller with rumble -- will be out this November in Japan and Spring 2008 everywhere else.

Future games, such as Metal Gear Solid 4, will incorporate rumble technology, while older titles can enable rumble through software updates. No price has been given, nor was there any discussion on whether the Sixaxis would be phased out.
TGS07: DualShock 3 unveiled, PS3 learns to shake, rattle and roll originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Sep 2007 23:48:00 EST. According to IGN, EA accidentally revealed the rumbling SIXAXIS to the press in its pre-TGS media briefing. The PS3 version of Burnout Paradise had a heftier feel to it: the controller was heavier and had a giant sticker that said "RUMBLE." With the cat out of the bag, IGN also added that "A formal announcement is expected tomorrow at Kaz Hirai's keynote address." Early word on Kaz's keynote suggests that other significant announcements will headline Sony's presentation.

[Via PS3F]
TGS07: Rumbling SIXAXIS accidentally revealed by EA originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Sep 2007 09:49:00 EST. He says that TGS will ultimately reveal the long-awaited rumbling controllers and the now-legendary 2.0 firmware, which will magically allow you to run many XMB tools from within a game. We're sure Sony's going to playing hardball at TGS, and you'll probably want to tune into our continuing coverage of the event, starting this Wednesday.

At least, that's what Chris Spearing, UK and Ireland manager for Logitech, seemed to think. His company still has yet to formally announce the identity of their first Wii product, but the discussion seems to be turning towards a Wiimote substitute.

Speaking about the issue of rumble versus motion controls, Spearing said "Having the motion-sensing in the Sixaxis, that really works for some games. And for the Wii - you've seen people rush out and buy the Wii for that realism, if you're swinging a tennis racket, you know how to do it." He then went on to mention that "Hopefully we'll be at the forefront of pushing that further, combining some of the two."

We'd assume that Spearing was talking about a PS3 controller design if not for the title of the GamesIndustry.biz story: "Logitech to create Wiimote rival?" If he is indeed talking about the Wii, he should check it out sometime-- he may be impressed with the controller.

Once they get their technological issues straightened out (i.e. figure out what technology is in the controller), we'd love to see Logitech's take on the Wii controller. Their hardware is top-notch, and often outclasses standard controllers.
Logitech planning third-party Wiimote? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 15:40:00 EST. Supposedly, the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will support DualShock 3 -- at least according to a NeoGAF retelling of Japanese publication Dengeki PlayStation. This has sparked discussion that the controller featured on the official GT5 website (pictured above) is actually a DualShock 3, not a Sixaxis. But honestly, we all expect the rumble-enabled PS3 controller to look identical to our current Sixaxis controller. A silhouette won't tell us much.

Hopefully, we'll find out something at Leipzig later today.

[Via Joystiq]
Rumor: DualShock 3 to rumble with GT5 Prologue originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 12:00:00 EST. DualShock 3 will be compatible with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, allegedly reports Japanese publication Dengeki PlayStation. The sparse detail was provided by a NeoGAF poster (sans scan) rounding up the magazine's news and has fueled speculation that the gamepad silhouette featured on the official GT5 website (pictured above) is actually a DualShock 3, rather than the assumed SixAxis. With Prologue scheduled for October (in Japan), the next logical assumption is that DualShock 3 will launch alongside the dressed up demo. But these are uninformed guesses, folks. Let hearsay be hearsay until Sony speaks up ... maybe right now in Leipzig. (But probably not until TGS.)

[Via PSPSPS.tv]
DualShock 3 rumbles with GT5 Prologue, Japanese gaming mag claims originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 11:10:00 EST. We don't see much homebrew for the Wii or GameCube that doesn't have to do with emulating some system or another, so when something wacky like this comes along, we can't help but jump at the chance to write it up.

Working 160R's Massager application is easy -- select a technique or mode, place the GameCube controller(s) anywhere you want, and enjoy the rumble rubdown. Sure, it's nothing like the real thing, but have you looked at hourly rates for a professional massage lately? Inconceivable! And despite our efforts to coerce our cats into walking their padded feet on our aching backs, no amount of kitten treats will keep them there any longer than a few seconds.

Unsurprisingly, this sort of vibration-based program is ripe for abuse -- we're looking at you, Jane Pinckard (link potentially NSFW) -- but how could the developer not expect to see his work perverted? It's a small consolation, though, to see the old purple console get a little love after all this time, even if it is mostly self-love.
ShiatsuCube: Homebrew happy endings originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 14:15:00 EST. Sony is denying recent reports that rumble Sixaxis' are ready to shake things up for consumers. Sony spokesman Dave Karraker tells GamePro that they have not added rumble to the Sixaxis and have no announcements regarding the feature. Although, if we're going to get technical with the word play, we know that Sony hasn't added rumble to the Sixaxis yet ('cause we don't have them) and, as for the future, they have no announcement at this time. They didn't actually deny the reports that developers have Sixaxis' with the rumble feature though, but of course, that's if we're getting technical. At this point, in all fairness, the rumble Sixaxis is merely rumor and speculation.

What Karraker did say is that the motion sensing abilities of the Sixaxis have been enhanced and developers are currently working with those. He says, "We recently sent out to the development community some new prototypes that have a slightly enhanced sensitivity for the analog sticks and the motion sensing within the Sixaxis controller ... This is not a new controller, but is part of the normal development and evolution of controllers." This follows along with statements already made by Kaz Hirai that the Sixaxis will continue to evolve and we should expect more iterations in the future.
Sony denies the rumble Sixaxis, admits upgrades originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Aug 2007 11:25:00 EST. He did confirm that better motion-sensing controllers were in the works, but downplayed it as more of a controller update than a new controller. He said that "[Sony] recently sent out to the development community some new prototypes that have a slightly enhanced sensitivity for the analog sticks and the motion sensing within the Sixaxis controller ... This is not a new controller, but is part of the normal development and evolution of controllers."

While this may seem disheartening, this may be a PR tactic utilizing semantics. Rumble, as far as controllers are concerned, involve rotating hammer weights, causing the controller to shake. That feature is not coming to the PS3. But Karraker might have been dancing around the word rumble, when the proper term is TouchSense technology. Know what we're saying? Of course, maybe we're wrong. But we like dancing, too, Sony!

[via Digg]
Sony insists they haven't added rumble to controllers originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Aug 2007 22:00:00 EST. Website Inner Bits says they can "confirm" that prototypes of the new rumble Sixaxis are in the hands of "various Sony developers." They say that Sony could make the announcement about the new Sixaxis as early as Leipzig, or hold off until more games support the new features. Sony probably wouldn't want to make all those "rushed technology" stories pop up again.

Inner Bits also says that a new version of the Sixaxis is quietly replacing those currently on the market. Allegedly Sony improved "the fidelity of motion sensing" so now there isn't so much of a "dead zone." Of course this is all still currently rumor and speculation, but we are hoping that the Sixaxis will rumble this year.
Rumor: Rumble Sixaxis in developer hands originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Aug 2007 11:24:00 EST. If you're lacking the small amount of cash it would cost you to pick up a Rumble Pak of your own, there's always the DIY solution. With just a little elbow grease, a spare Pokemon Pinball GBA game, and a spare Nokia 5100, you can create your own Rumble Pak that fits in flush with your DS Lite. Of course, one could argue that it isn't worth the effort and suggest just plunking down the dough for one, but then you wouldn't have that sense of accomplishment that comes from doing it yourself and the future comfort of bragging to your friends that you're better than them.

[Via Engadget]
Want rumble?
The ninjas at Acidmods can do anything, right? In the midst of E3-related chaos, we missed this awesome modification, which brings sound-activated rumble to the PSP. F00 f00 explains the magic: "In basic terms what is happening here is the volt amp is sending voltage fed by the speaker to the pic, when it hits a certain pitch the pic turns on the motor."

Obviously, this feature isn't included in the upcoming PSP redesign. Got an old Pokemon Pinball cart laying around? Then you, friend, have a one-way ticket to frugal gaming fun ... with rumble! Xyzzy has just posted a tutorial on Instructables on how to build a rumble pak that fits smoothly into your DS lite GBA slot. Yes, Nintendo released a smaller version of the pak for the Lite, but you'd have to spend money and be like a normal consumer if you did that. With Xyzzy's plans, you can make a mess, destroy a game cart, and probably injure yourself too!

[Via Infendo]
DIY Nintendo DS Lite rumble pak originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Jul 2007 18:30:00 EST. Kaz Hirai has tempted us yet again with his fancy words and vague confirmations. He has let slip the new Sixaxis will contain a few more features in addition to the TouchSense rumble capabilities. In fact, he said, "a variety of other things." Unless he means the TouchSense. In that case, boring! Otherwise, we could see anything from a new set of buttons (L4 and R4, really?) or a remote volume control for game music. Maybe a microphone? How about a magnifying glass? We'd really like to see your most inventive ideas to incorporate into the controller, so why don't you go nuts and give us your "features" to add?

Rumor: Even more features for the new Sixaxis? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Jul 2007 15:45:00 EST. In an interview with Kikizo, Sony global president Kaz Hirai alludes to future iterations of the Sixaxis controller. Hirai says that they're "obviously looking" at what do do with the Sixaxis now that they've come to an agreement with Immersion. He says they're actually looking at a variety of things they can put into the controller and they'll say something when they're ready to.

Hirai points out about the controller, "I mean, as you know, that's also an evolving peripheral, if you will, in that we started out with the original PS1 controller with no analogue, and it's come all the way to this point, so obviously, as we go forward, it's not the final model for a PS3 controller, so we'll see what comes down the road." It is impressive to think that the same controller, with minor tweaks every few years, has been a staple of the PlayStation going on 15 years. So, when will we finally hear about what's going into the next Sixaxis? There's still plenty of conventions left this year.
Hirai says more Sixaxis iterations on the way originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Jul 2007 15:20:00 EST. As pictured, a revision could possibly follow the offset analogue stick alignment currently used by Microsoft for Xbox 360 gamepads (and also by Nintendo for Gamecube). Of course, this crude Photoshop job is hardly confirmation of that design choice, as clearly the creator has simply swapped the d-pad and left stick (notice the indented d-pad outline behind the repositioned analogue control). Did the page-maker pull from a shoddy Google Images source or what?

Update: Remember Charlie Tang's redesign from our January 2006 contest...?

Update 2: Sony PR director Dave Karraker calls it a "bad artist rendering" that's in the process of being corrected.
