This week Valve remembers its ARG campaign with the Potato Sack Reunion sale, which knocks half off the price of 13 individual indie titles.

Games include Super Meat Boy, The Ball, Cogs, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and many more. So instead, we turned our attention to Conquest. How could we tailor this essential Battlefield game mode to fit our new type of environment?"

The result of said tailoring is "Conquest Domination," a new mode inspired by Fegraeus and game designer Gustav Halling's shared nostalgia for Unreal Tournament's Domination mode. "The Domination type gameplay usually takes place on smaller maps, much like the ones we were creating. Inspired by these memories, we used the spawning systems from Battlefield 3 Team Deathmatch and came up with a Conquest mode adapted for smaller spaces."

Fegraeus also stressed flag protection is much more important in Conquest Domination, and that while the differences in the new mode are "subtle," they provide "different tactical layers" when used in conjunction with the new maps.
BF3: Close Quarters devoid of Rush mode, introduces Conquest Domination originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 18 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure brings five modern-classic animated films into real, still-animated life this March. The following screens offer a glimpse of each movie -- Cars, Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up and Ratatouille -- and how they'll transfer to motion controls. We're not entirely sure which full-body gesture is required for "riding sewage like it's a boat," but it appears we'll get the chance to find out with Kinect Rush. Thanks, Pixar.
Rock Band will add Rush's legendary "2112" to the Wii and Xbox 360 music store next week, while the PS3 will receive the anthem in 2012 (because the PSN doesn't update during the holidays). The 20-minute suite can be purchased whole or as three separate tracks.
Continue reading Rock Band Weekly: Rush '2112'

Rock Band Weekly: Rush '2112' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 23:45:00 EST. What's better than a Kinect game styled after a Disney Pixar movie? Try a Kinect game styled after five Disney Pixar movies! The overly branded Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure is exactly that, offering up a series of Kinect-enabled minigames centered around five Disney Pixar movies: Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up, Ratatouille, and ... Cars. Well, four out of five ain't too bad.

As you can see in the trailer above, it looks pretty fun if you happen to be a little kid who really likes waving your arms around. You can see another shot of Woody and Buzz waving said arms around in the gallery below. Kinect Rush will be available on March <strike>12</strike> 20, 2012 (for $49.99), and just a few weeks later, your kids will probably have some killer triceps.

Update: This post originally had March 12, 2012 has the launch date, when in fact it is March 20, 2012. Microsoft's latest batch of kid-friendly Kinect games includes projects developed in collaboration with Disney Pixar, Sesame Workshop, National Geographic and the Games for Learning Institute. Wow. Back in our day, we had to make do with The Castle of Dr. Brain.

Disney Pixar's game, codenamed "Rush," will scan and deposit you and your diminutive kin into the wonderful worlds seen in five Pixar movies: The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Toy Story 3 and Cars 2. It sounds like you can expect some minigames while you're in there, though Microsoft prefers to call them "exciting challenges." (One of them is pictured above.)

Kinect Sesame Street TV purveys basic education in the best way possible: via adorable muppets, with Sesame Street footage filmed specifically for Xbox 360. Kinect will also host Kinect Nat Geo TV, which lets you interact with the natural world as an animal (in case you've grown tired of being a hedgehog all the time), and a game tentatively called "Project Columbia." It's proposed as a way to immerse young gamers in books, pairing storytelling with interactive music and illustrations.

We'll see more of these projects before they start arriving in Spring 2012. Another game, Double Fine's Happy Action Theater, is due this holiday. You'll just have to see the trailer to understand its insane exuberance.
Continue reading Pixar's 'Rush,' new Sesame Street game coming to Kinect (for kids)

Pixar's 'Rush,' new Sesame Street game coming to Kinect (for kids) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 16:45:00 EST. James Pedeaston (pictured), a recurring side character in the Grand Theft Auto universe, is listed among several other roles in a voice-over casting call posted on Actors Pages, which could be further evidence that production of Grand Theft Auto 5 is underway. Take-Two was initially named (as the production company) in the posting, according to Eurogamer, but reference to the GTA publisher has since been removed.

Pedeaston was the host of "The Wild Traveler" radio show in GTA: San Andreas -- in which he openly recounted acts of pedophilia -- and, in GTA IV, he was "arrested by the Indonesian police after being suspected of child molesting in Bali, Indonesia," according to the GTA Wiki. The casting call describes Pedeaston as a "man-boy love activist who just got released from an Indonesian prison," suggesting that the role would be set in a time period following the events of GTA IV -- in other words, a role featured in the next GTA game.

Additional first-name-only characters are listed in the job posting and sound generally befitting of a GTA game -- take "Samantha," for instance: "A young female obsessed with sex parties, always dreaming of being a Hollywood celebrity." The Actors Pages casting call follows a similar job posting on The Agency, for a project named "Rush" (assumed to be a codename and linked to Take-Two), which introduces more puzzle pieces that might fit together into a new GTA game set in Los Angeles -- or "Los Santos," as it's known in San Andreas.
We'll be the first to say it: Rhythm games don't exactly seem like the best venue for playable versions of full-length concept albums. Yeah, that one breakout track is still really fun to play, but the 14-minute theremin solo that follows can't be too fun to wait through. That said, we can't help but applaud Activision's recent initiative to include Rush's 20-minute-long 7-part epic, "2112," in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

Sure, there are a few parts of the prog-rock suite during which we might want to take brief naps, but the collection's more rocking moments more than make up for it. Here's hoping for an Achievement for playing the whole shebang front-to-back in one sitting -- an act which would cause lesser vocalists to burst into flames.
The issues with this week's Rock Band DLC were worse than we first thought. Rush's Moving Pictures album will not be available for purchase on Xbox 360, nor PS3. Apparently some guy called "unforeseen technical difficulties" has screwed everything up. Wait, it gets worse. According to the announcement post on the official Rock Band forums, the problem may keep the album from being available for a couple weeks.

Harmonix is currently shifting the release schedule around to have some tracks out this week, keeping its streak of new content since the game's launch alive and well. We'll be sure to post when we hear something about Harmonix's plans.
'Technical difficulties' delay Rock Band's Rush DLC, possibly for weeks originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Aug 2008 18:20:00 EST. Bad news, everyone! This week's Rock Band DLC offering -- Rush's Moving Pictures album -- didn't come out today as planned. In a post on the forums, Harmonix's Sean Baptiste said, "There is a technical difficulty that is being worked out. I'll alert you when it is all clear." We wonder if that has anything to do with figuring out how to tell singers they can't wail on "YYZ." It's okay, please stop crying.

No timeline has been given, although at this point it seems more likely the Xbox 360 content will be released alongside PlayStation 3's content this week. That is, assuming they fix the problem by Thursday.
Rock Band Moving Pictures DLC stalled due to 'technical difficulty' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 23:11:00 EST. Typically, these trolls are known for comments like "Yeah, I'd rather play a real guitar, thanks." Imagine then, how strange it must be for real musicians to play fake versions of their own songs. Enter Rush performing the Rock Band version of "Tom Sawyer" backstage at the Colbert Report. To make a long story short, they fail at 36% completion. They don't seem to broken up about it though. Rock legends, and Canadian Gods, Rush set a really good example for other rock icons -- they fully embrace gaming. While no one in the band is copping to late night sessions of Halo 3, they do discuss the process of getting their music into Rock Band, specifically tracking down a lost cut of "Working Man" to be released exclusively as downloadable content. Unfortunately, there is still no word if the rumor that the 1978 classic track The Trees is included in Rock Band 2 is true or not.

In an interview with Rock Band's Brett Milano, band members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson talk about bringing their music to a new generation via gaming, the beginnings of Rush and name drop a few cities and spots in and around Ontario. Sure, Canada might be responsible for Celine Dion but Rush makes up for that travesty in spades.

[via Rush is a Band - Blog]

Rush talks Rock Band, humble beginnings originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 15:15:00 EST. It's Tuesday and you know what that means. Rock Band Weekly! Available now on the Xbox Live Markeplace are four new tracks to help you rock out in style. "Snow ((Hey Oh))" and "Tell Me Baby" from Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as "Working Man (Vault Edition)" and "Closer to the Heart" from Rush dropped this morning for 160MS Points a piece ($2 in real money if your a currency snob) and are worth every penny. Unless RHCP and Rush aren't your thing that is. If free is more your style then may we recommend "Promised Land" from Vesuvius, which has been on the Marketplace for a little while but is still worth a look for the price. That price, if you missed it, is free. Happy rocking!
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rush tracks hit XBLM originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 10:15:00 EST. With tomorrow being the day the US became independent from France ... what, England, really? Anyway, Harmonix announced its tracks for next week's Rock Band DLC a day early. We've got a couple songs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rush. "Working Man" was actually released as DLC before, but this version is a master and features an alternate solo.

Individual songs (160 MS points/ $2)

Gasp at the ancient picture of The Smashing Pumpkins above. Go ahead, gasp already. This week the Rock Band downloadable content brings us the song Siva, which hails from way back when The Smashing Pumpkins actually looked like this. Don't you just want to pinch little Billy Corgan's cheeks? Along with the The Pumpkins we also get some more Rush and ride the Ten Speed.

Individual songs

Barring any unforeseen hiccups, we're assuming that the songs will be available on PSN as well. We'll be sure to remind you of the DLC with our Rock Band Weekly posts over the next couple Mondays.

[Update: Looks like someone at Microsoft jumped the gun on the announcement a little bit and they've pulled everything that hadn't been announced already (they neglected to update their intro paragraph though). Never fear, former Joystiqer Jared Rea linked us to a screenshot on his blog to cast away any lingering doubts as to the one-time existence of the information. Behold!]
Xbox.com lists Rock Band DLC through January: Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 18:00:00 EST. You gotta pay for old rock! Prices go back to 160 MS points ($2) this week as the rock is aged a little more finely compared to the modern selection from last week. The exploration of the RBDLC (Rock Band downloadable content) void continues as there's still no road map of Rock Band's DLC for the future. This week's tracks give us a little '70s with Lynyrd Skynyrd (Leh-Nerd Skin-nerd) and early '80s with Rush. The most iffy selection for nit-picky music geeks is probably the Black Crowes' version of you-know-it-when-you-hear-it song Hard to Handle. Some people prefer the Grateful Dead version, and for those who like letting their soul out when they sing, there's also the Otis Redding version. Songs below will also be part of a DLC double-dose this Thursday on the PlayStation Network, which includes last week's songs not added due to the holiday.

Individual songs

Gimme Three Steps - Lynyrd Skynyrd (160 MS points/ $2)

Hard to Handle - Black Crowes *Cover* (160 MS points/ $2)

Limelight - Rush *Cover* (160 MS Points / $2))

Videos of the songs can be found after the break, we're going to keep trying to work on getting a Rock Band DLC road map for the future.
Continue reading Rock Band Weekly: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Crowes and Rush

Rock Band Weekly: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Crowes and Rush originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Jan 2008 11:20:00 EST. Several people who've tried it out have reported a number of different effects -- disabled System Settings options and deleted notes on the Message Board -- but nothing of consequence yet. Could hackers eventually manipulate this strange function to run homebrew software and unauthorized code? Who knows!

Provided that your firmware isn't old and busted, like your rhyme style, you can try out this Maintenance Mode yourself! Just follow these simple instructions:

Turn on your Wii.

Hold down the + and - buttons during the Health and Safety screen

While holding down those buttons, hit A

Pour yourself a glass of sweet tea

Load up Rush's "Red Barchetta"

Rock out

Really, you could just skip the first three steps.

[Via DCEmu]
Wii Maintenance Mode: 'It's a secret to everybody' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Nov 2007 17:00:00 EST.
The Google translation doesn't really help, but we've seen enough of these celebrity pressers to know what's going on. Pirates of the Caribbean costar Geoffrey Rush was presented with the Wii game based on his movie at a Japanese press event, and asked how he likes it. His badly mangled thoughts:

"Present ......Don't you think? you do not play almost. And it had sweet music, too. Sega recently showed off the upcoming sequel, Sonic Rush Adventure (why were we not invited?), and several fellow bloggers around the web have chimed in with their thoughts.

From what we can tell, the title is sticking to what made the first so successful. Blaze the Cat will be playable in addition to Sonic, but the game sticks to the trademark mechanic of blinding speed to entertain the player. There does appear to be some actual "adventure" portions of the game, but they merely consist of a (high-speed) boat ride across a three-dimensional ocean, a la Wind Waker. Also, the Sonic team has finally decided to give Sonic the gift of everlasting respiration, removing the classic "air bubble" gameplay found in underwater levels.

With some snazzy 2-D to 3-D transitional effects and intriguing level design, we've no doubt that SRA will match, if not exceed, the original. Keep your eyes peeled for the azure blur this fall.

Sonic Rush Adventure preview originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 May 2007 10:00:00 EST. One caller, Mark from Centreville, Va., tried to lay the blame at gaming's doorstep. "I will guarantee you, I'll bet my last dollar in my pocket, that this shooter will be found to have been a compulsive video gamer," he said.

Rush was quick to jump in, pointing out that even if the shooter played games, "not every video gamer goes out and murders 33 people on the college campus though. There's more to this than that." Limbaugh granted that playing games "may desensitize people, but it doesn't turn everybody into mass murderers."

Limbaugh later went on to compare video game censorship to gun control. "How many millions of people play video games, and how many millions of people have guns? If you start blaming the video games, you may as well demand video game control because it's the same thing when you start trying to blame guns for this. You have here a sick individual, an evil individual who committed a random act. But if you want to start blaming the video games, this guy was this or that, well, then you've gotta maybe talk about banning them because that's the same tack that's taken with guns. You got one guy who used a gun, that's it."

So remember, the next time you're griping about mainstream media coverage of games, that said coverage is not a monolithic force with only one point of view.

[Thanks Jonathan]
Limbaugh: Don't scapegoat games for VT massacre originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 17:20:00 EST.
