Square Enix's upcoming Nintendo DS-exclusive SaGa 2 Hihou Densetsu: Goddess of Destiny (Final Fantasy Legend 2) is getting the collector's edition treatment, with box art that brings us back to our childhood days. While the classic Master System-style packaging may seem an odd choice for a DS release, it's exactly the kind of old school flair needed for a remake.

The 'Square Enix e-Store only' collector's pack -- priced at ¥12,076 ($126 US) -- also includes the game's original soundtrack, a 20th Anniversary SaGa Chronicle book, a mascot tchotchke and two postcards. Avid collectors can import the game, enjoy the soundtrack and let their friends know what they are missing via snail mail. That's what we call a functional collector's edition.

The company revealed the limited-edition SaGa 20th anniversary system, which will be sold with a copy of SaGa 2 and will release on the same September 17 date as the standalone version.

The system features the SaGa logo and a circular logo with the title of each game in the series. It looks so refreshingly different from the usual limited-edition system. It remains as expensive as usual: 24,880 yen ($262).

The remake is getting the same kind of treatment from Square that any major DS RPG would -- by which we mean Square is charging a lot for it and releasing an even more expensive limited edition.

Though the company has yet to reveal the design, a limited-edition SaGa 20th Anniversary DSi system will be available on the game's release date, for 24,880 yen ($261). It's a good idea for Square Enix to release this limited edition and celebrate this milestone with this particular SaGa game, as ... people like this one.

SaGa 2 Hiihou Densetsu: Goddess of Destiny will arrive on the DS in Japan this fall. No announcement has been made for the West, but this seems destined for worldwide release.

A new trailer for the RPG reveals the extent of the makeover that the Game Boy classic will receive on the DS, with character art from The World Ends with You co-designer Gen Kobayashi and a new semi-cel-shaded look being incorporated. We're fond of the adorable monster designs and the even more adorable Meka design.

Square Enix released some lovely screens of the SaGa 2 (Final Fantasy Legend II) remake, along with information about some rather expected, but basically welcome, changes. In addition to the new 3D graphics, SaGa 2 will also allow for some kind of touchscreen operation, though we don't know how extensive or mandatory it is. We highly doubt SE would alienate their retro audience by forcing touch controls into the game. SaGa 2 will also have a wireless multiplayer mode, involving some kind of competitive play against "rivals". The battle scenes have been changed to a more seamless experience, without the transition to the menu-driven interface.

Fear not, FFLII fans: the remake will still have all its quirks, including the ability for monsters to power up by eating the meat of their fallen enemies.

The best RPGs from both Square and Enix are the ones made pre-merger (with the possible exception of The World Ends with You) -- we all know it, and so does Square Enix. That's why they've been loading up the DS with ports and remakes of their back catalogue. The strategy has paid off: the games have been well-received by critics and audiences alike, with Dragon Quest V one of the top ten best-selling games in Japan last year.

The next old game to be made new is SaGa 2, known in the US as Final Fantasy Legend II. This game is from before the SaGa series became terrible! The cel-shaded graphics and new art in the remake look quite nice, so we're expecting this Game Boy remake to be another winner for SE. We're happy to see the return of a Game Boy classic -- Game Boy remakes seem like naturals for the DS, but don't happen as often as we'd expect.
