Our infatuation with the "Guitar Hero scarf" was just too great and we needed to know how to make one. Given the fact that nobody on staff -- well, at least, openly -- knows how to knit or crochet, we had to get to the source for the pattern. We spoke with Domestic Scientist Renée White, who gave us a little more detail about how she came up with the idea, and ends up being kind enough to give us a very detailed explanation of how to make the scarf.

How'd you come up with the idea for the Guitar Hero scarf?

Renée White: In December, I was making scarves for Christmas presents while some friends played Rock Band and I waited for someone to let me have a turn, and I noticed that the scarf I was working on looked a lot like the fret board on the screen. Then I just had a head-smacking epiphany and thought "Why didn't I think of this sooner? It's so OBVIOUS!" Although Rock Band was the inspiration, I decided to go with the Guitar Hero style button though because they were cuter.

How much time did it take you?

RW: It took me about two months to finish, but that's just because I have attention span of a hyper-active gnat. If someone were to sit down and concentrate on just this one project, I think it could be finished in a week or two.

Before everyone goes marching on the Activision offices with torches and pitchforks in hand, understand that the company is not whoring Guitar Hero out to the winter clothing industry (at least, not that we know of). No, the scarf you see above was created by a crafter at the Domestic Scientist. The song depicted on the scarf (obviously) is "Killer Queen" by, erm, Queen. Trust us when we tell you that this scarf is well made, as it was treated to an incredibly strenuous -- and adorable -- durability test. You can check that out after the break. Atlanta knitter Cassie (that'll be her boyfriend, Jason, pictured) is currently slaving away on what is likely to be the greatest scarf of all time -- a wool-based reproduction of the iconic World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros.

Yep, you read that right -- every jump, bush, coin, Goomba, pipe (though not the sewer sections, understandably), item box, and cloud, accurately rendered in yarn. According to the determined Cassie, the scarf is currently around one-third complete, and is already at ten feet, meaning the finished article will come in at around thirty feet in length. Here's a way to show you care: an Atlanta, GA schoolteacher (and obsessive knitter) is recreating World 1-1 in scarf form (based on this map from Ian Albert). It's been a while since we've seen a Mega Man game akin to the ones of the days of yore, but now, yore comes in scarf form.

Beatboxtaun, the same craftster behind the Punch-Out! scarf, has gone and designed some winter gear based on Mega Man 2 (a game which, incidentally, has one of our favorite video game soundtracks). It might be getting a little too warm for scarves, since spring is just around the corner, but we're sure your nostalgia can keep you cold enough to don this beauty.

What's nice about this scarf is that it not only features the Blue Bomber himself, but also the villains of the game. Now, all she has to do is make a Mega Man 3 scarf that includes Proto Man, and we'd be super happy.

This neck mitten certainly isn't cheap, as it will cost you $150 on Etsy -- but until we get a classic Mega Man game on the DS, this is probably the next best thing. For now, though, we guess we'll have to settle for Mega Man Star Force and the like.

We can't help but love Little Mac, the quintessential underdog. If seeing him on your virtual console isn't enough, though, how about seeing him around your neck in the winter? You may have also noticed that this scarf has Mike Tyson's big mug on it, so you won't have to settle for Mr. Dream.

Realistically, we know you won't buy this -- after all, the scarf is a whopping $175 on Etsy. Still, we admire the craftsmanship that went into Beatboxtaun's crocheting, and we hope you do, too. We only wish we had such skills ourselves, so that we didn't have to drool over these kinds of things on Etsy all the time.

In our opinion, this definitely beats out the Punch-Out mat for the best craft featuring Little Mac (that we know of).

Etsy user UrbanPrincess crocheted this one-of-a-kind scarf, but we fear that its $150 price tag means that she's targeting a rather limited demographic -- namely, rich Nintendo fans. Seriously, has she seen what we get paid the amount of stuff we want this Christmas?

We're not really scarf people. We can attribute this to two major causes:
  1. It's November, and we face the danger of melting every time we go outside
  2. A distinct lack of Tetris-emblazoned scarves
This scarf from Etsy seller paintedfire goes a long way to address the latter, obviously, though even the most excellent Tetris scarf does nothing to ameliorate the sweltering heat of our home environment. We're quite tempted to buy it, though, and wear it until we pass out. It's just that nice-looking.

We quite appreciate the attention to detail here: the playing field is 10 blocks wide and at least 15 blocks tall (a true Tetris playfield is 20 blocks tall, and we can just assume that the falling piece has decended five spaces.) We prefer our game scarves as accurate as possible, thank you.

As you may know, Japan loves Monster Hunter. And, Capcom is quickly trying to capitalize on its popularity. As if having over 400,000 pre-orders wasn't enough, Game Watch reports that Capcom will offer this chic Monster Hunter scarf for Japanese customers that pre-order the game at Capcom's electronic store.

Why a scarf? Why not? You know, I try to look as fashionable as I can while slaying demons.

Joe Malia, a student at the Royal College of Art in London, created a series of face scarves with special attachments that, at least in the above example, "lets PSP players explore their passion in complete privacy". There's also a special design that fits neatly over a CRT; the perfect way to prevent your roommate from copying your finely honed Counter-Strike tactics.

When I used to live in the City of Brotherly Love, I was forced to use mass transportation a lot. I guess force could be too strong of a word, as it was a convenient way to get around. Now that I've relocated to the suburbs, I find a lot of my portable gaming time is spent in the comfort of my own home. Maybe this isn't the case for a lot of you in more urban locales.

Anyway, back when I did game on the bus or train, nothing bothered me more than someone breathing down my neck watching me game. Not only did it throw me off from attaining those crazy high scores I'm so used to getting, but I was always paranoid someone was going to try and grab my Game Boy at the next stop. Well, looks like Joe Malia has come up with a rather abnormal solution.

This sleeve, which you can see in action through the linked graphic above this post, offers a little more privacy and allows the gamer to get into that highly cherished zone of concentration. Sure, you're guaranteed to receive a few glances of perplexity while wearing the odd garment, but what do you care, you just cleared level 99 in Lumines?
