Surprise! The Scott Pilgrim vs. The World online DLC actually comes out today on PSN, according to Sony. The $4.99 DLC, which was announced in August for a game that was already two years old, and then delayed almost another year, adds online multiplayer and playable Wallace Wells. That probably means that the DLC is newly scrubbed of any material from a Game Boy Advance Sonic the Hedgehog game.

Starting tomorrow, PS Plus members will get 20% off the price of this DLC, as well as the "Ultimate Edition" of the game. For so long, we've discounted the very existence of this DLC, and now it's being discounted in a good way.

It was due to be released on XBLA and PSN this week, but Ubisoft has delayed it once again - one day before release.

In a statement sent to Destructoid, Ubisoft says it is "addressing feedback from the community on the best ways to honor retro games in the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game DLC in an accurate and respectful manner."

That likely translates to removing the elements that appear to be cribbed from Sonic Battle. This is the weirdest DLC ever. Sorry, Soulcalibur 5.

Of course, the XBLA release schedule is where we first saw evidence of this DLC back in August, and it had a release date then too, so perhaps you shouldn't plan your whole week around that event.

Things to look forward to this week include Skulls of the Shogun on Jan. 30, the "Revolution" DLC for Black Ops 2 on Jan. 29, and a Street Fighter X Tekken sale on costume DLC (and, for some reason, Mega Man 9 and 10, both 20% off) from Jan. 29 through Feb. 4.

The World game, intended to add playable Wallace Wells and, more importantly, online multiplayer. The DLC missed its August 19 date, then its "fall" window, and all of 2012. The original game was released in August of 2010.

Now it may be imminent, as achievements relating to the DLC have shown up in the XBLA achievement list, spotted by XBLAFans. They are unambiguously connected to the DLC, as they reference both Wallace and playing online.

Ubisoft did not offer Joystiq a reason for the sudden delay, but did clarify a new release window. "The DLC for Scott Pilgrim will be releasing this fall," an Ubisoft rep told us. "The PSN version will release during that same timeframe. We'll have more information as we get closer to launch."

You've been waiting two years for this; you can probably wait a bit longer.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is getting new DLC to add online multiplayer on August 19. Just as a reminder, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World was released almost exactly two years ago.

This is perhaps the most welcome news we didn't expect to see today.

Making it even better: the 400 MSP ($5) pack also includes a new character, Wallace Wells, who doesn't really even need weapons to hurt people. Presumably he'll be taking a break from his in-game mystery shop while he's fighting.

Update: Ubisoft PR rep Alex Monney clarified that the DLC is coming to both XBLA and PSN, promising "More details at a later date."

Kickstarter's official first Project of the Day of 2012 is Glitch, a fledgling webseries about a 20-something video-game tester who begins seeing 8-bit glitches in his real, otherwise completely average, life. Imagine it as a mix between Office Space and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

If that doesn't convince you to donate to the Glitch cause, the above trailer might. If that doesn't sell you, the prizes you earn by helping fund the project might. If those don't sway you, you're probably suffering a brain hemorrhage in your "potentially really entertaining webseries" lobe, and you should get to the hospital immediately.

Was it just me or did Reach seem to have the quietest launch of any $200 million seller in history? Franchise fatigue has definitely set in for Halo, but it didn't stop Bungie from delivering its masterpiece. What this game lacks in variation, it makes up for in refinement of one of the all-time great first-person shooters. Reach may be lagging behind Call of Duty -- both Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 -- in the Xbox Live numbers game, but its campaign is so much more epic. The Covenant are classic video game bad guys, and no one does enemy AI like Bungie. No one.

DQIX is secretly two games: when you're playing through the main quest, it's a traditional JRPG with a light but interesting story populated by unexpectedly engaging characters and perfectly brisk pacing; then as you approach the end, it becomes a dungeon crawler driven by a dungeon map trading mechanic using the passive communication of the DS.

How compelling is that "tag mode" mechanic? I can't think of any other game for which I would go hang out at a GameStop and then a Best Buy, but that's exactly what I did when Nintendo held DQIX events this summer. I needed those maps. That's how I know this is my favorite game of 2010.

At least right now it won't.

Those who've already downloaded the DLC are reporting that they can't access any of the new goods at all. At this point, accessing the DLC seems dependent on a title update. We've contacted both Microsoft and Ubisoft for clarification on the issue and will let you know what we find out.

The PSN version of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World will receive its first expansion today, a $2 DLC pack that adds jilted ex-girlfriend Knives Chau as a playable character, as well as a player-vs-player arena mode and slightly-less-violent dodgeball mode.

Additionally, launching alongside the DLC will come a free patch that allows players to drop in or out of the game at any time while playing offline co-op. The update will also lower the difficulty of the game's (rather difficult) "Average Joe" setting.

According to Ubisoft, the DLC is due out on Xbox Live "later this month." If you're finding it difficult to stick it out until then, you can whet your palate by checking out a new trailer for the DLC after the jump.

Ubisoft announced at its 2010 Digital Day event yesterday that DLC is inbound for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game in November to coincide with the film's release on DVD and Blu-ray. The content will include a new playable character, Knives Chau, along with two new modes, a free-for-all arena battle with weapons (a sort of "lite" version of Super Smash Bros.) and dodgeball. The asking price will be $1.99 on PSN (160 Microsoft Points on XBLM).

At the same time, a patch will be issued to address difficulty balancing (making "average joe" a little more forgiving), squash several bugs and introduce drop-in/drop-out co-op. The latter will be for offline play only; when asked, Ubisoft said there are no plans to incorporate online multiplayer into the game, nor any further DLC for this stellar beat-'em-up.

We already shared the code to unlock Boss Rush in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but we've just learned of another and ran to try it out. Pictured above is the result of the "Blood Code" (X, Circle, X, Square, X, Circle, Circle on PS3; or A, B, A, X, A, B, B on Xbox 360 -- get it?)

Scott Pilgrim's interpretation of "blood" is pretty adorable: Whenever a hit connects, the spark effect is replaced by a pink, heart-shaped splash. The effect is active until you quit the game.

Though it brings us great joy to experience the nostalgia of writing about newly-discovered cheat codes, this may be the last time we get to do so for Scott Pilgrim, as most (if not all) of the game's codes have been discovered and GameFAQs'd.

Ubisoft artist Stéphane Boutin recently put up a blog post about content cut from the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World game. Though the post is worth reading for both its behind-the-scenes info and previously unreleased art, it also included some info about the released version of the game. Boutin mentioned some "extra game modes" that "you'll need to download or unlock if I remember correctly."

"Charles," who helped with programming on the game, then commented on that post with a code to unlock Boss Rush mode! "I think the code for Boss Rush was something like right, right, B, R1, right, right, B, R1 ... or something like that." We can confirm that the code works in the XBLA version of the game. Total Video Games reports that it works on PS3 if circle is substituted for B, and also notes that Ubisoft was set to release this code as part of a "newsletter incentive." A code to unlock a zombie survival mode was previously released in a trailer.

Later in the comments, Boutin says that "There will be a downloadable pack with a new character and maybe the extra game modes if they aren't unlockable right now, but i'm pretty sure that will be it."

It's a great week for Xbox 360 owners who possess a great deal of pent-up aggression, as the two-week PSN exclusivity of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World comes to a halt this Wednesday, August 25. The highly stylized, chiptune-enhanced beat 'em up will run you 800 Microsoft Points ($10), which is roughly equivalent to the price of a Scott Pilgrim movie ticket -- an item apparently covered in some kind of fatal, diffusive poison.

If you're looking for a beat-'em-up with more ... well, stabbing, you'll also be able to pick up Klei Entertainment's Shank for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15). That's a little bit more than the entry fee to Scott Pilgrim, but we're sure that's only because of discrepancies in the Canadian/American currency exchange rate.

That routine being, of course, beating the coins out of Canadian hipsters. The 8-bit quartet Anamanaguchi, which crafted the beat-em-up's score, recently announced that the soundtrack will be released August 24 on iTunes through ABKCO Music and Records.

If you're forced to deal with a small group of menacing Canadian hipsters standing outside right at this moment, you can stream clips from the soundtrack on ABKCO's site to get pumped up. Or, if you'd just like to hear a few more selections from the 'Guch, you can do so on the band's official site.

So, Xbox 360 owners can't get their hands on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game for about two more weeks -- however, rather than stew in a broth of your own jealousy, you can recreate all the action of the game by dressing your Avatar up like its mischievous protagonist. Well, maybe not all the action. A whole mess of stylish, Pilgrim-inspired duds were recently added to the Avatar storefront, including Scott's ruby red bass guitar, Ramona Flowers' begoggled outfit and a handful of tees featuring sprites from the game.

Also added to the storefront were a whole bunch of Star Wars outfits as part of The Empire Strikes Back's 30th Anniversary celebration. If you felt like shelling out the cash, you might be able to mix and match the ensembles of Scott Pilgrim and Han Solo, thereby creating the raddest fictional character on the planet.

Before pixel-art virtuoso Paul Robertson and chiptune geniuses Ananamanaguchi gave Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game its distinctive style, it wore its influences on its sleeve.

In this early pitch video made for Ubisoft (after the break), the game features pretty much direct parodies of Sonic the Hedgehog, Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man 2, set to chip covers of songs by the White Stripes, Smashing Pumpkins and the Ramones.

But even in this early stage, it's clear that the designers at Ubisoft had a handle on what they wanted to make, in terms of gameplay. And it's even clearer that this game was born out of genuine enthusiasm for both the comic source and the history of gaming.

There's a movie based on a series of graphic novels opening this week (we saw it a little early), and there's all manner of tie-in merchandise capitalizing on its epic epicness. So, here's the Scott Pilgrim video game. "Probably designed by Uwe Boll's less talented cousin Steve and coded by a drunken monkey," you say. Alas, licensed games do generally have that reputation about them.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is one of the best video game adaptations I've ever played. Like, since I was falling into pits playing E.T. on my Atari 2600. Unlike that train wreck and so many others that followed (with rare exceptions like Batman: Arkham Asylum), Scott Pilgrim isn't the product of dubious market research, cutting corners to maximize profits or designing a game for the lowest common denominator. It's clear almost immediately that this is made by people who have gaming ingrained in them down to the sub-atomic level. This is their love letter to their favorite hobby and, in turn, an invitation to revel in it alongside them.

Scott Pilgrim is clearly a man with a lot on his mind, but if you'd like to add to his pre-existing romantic burden, you'll be able to do so with the help of a few undead aggressors. As revealed in a trailer posted by Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (and, perhaps more appropriately, Shaun of the Dead) director Edgar Wright, the upcoming film's video game adaptation will feature some sort of zombie survival mode accessible through the main menu.

Of course, you'll need a bit of know-how in order access the mode. On the game's title screen, simply input down, up, right, down, up, right, down, up, right, right, right -- that's "DUR DUR DURRR," the universal mating call of all undeadkind -- and then prepare to press whatever the "Punch" button might be on the console upon which you're playing the game. Prepare to press it a lot.

I saw the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World movie at Comic-Con last weekend, and while our purview is still just interactive entertainment, the film is an indication of just how prevalent video games have become in popular culture. Just like the popular indie comics on which it's based, the film is chock full of video game references and even has some big plot points that invoke old-school video game clichés. Gaming is woven into the language of this story and this movie.

I got a chance earlier this week to sit down with director Edgar Wright, Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, and the movie's cast to talk about the flick, video games in general and how mainstream audiences will react to seeing games used onscreen in this way. We also got some new insight on the retro-style Scott Pilgrim vs. The World game.

While it's unlikely Scott Pilgrim vs. the World will be sold out when it launches on the PlayStation Store's virtual shelves next month, you may still want to pre-order the game. Ubisoft's official online store is throwing in a special bonus: a free "Sex Bob-omb" t-shirt for your PlayStation Home avatar.

Okay, this may not be the most exciting pre-order bonus ever concocted, but there's still good reason to be excited. The Ubishop has Scott Pilgrim listed at $9.99, bucking the recent trend of $15 downloads. We definitely approve.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World won't be a PSN exclusive for that long. According to an IGN report from Comic-Con, Ubisoft's unlikely mixture of Bryan Lee O'Malley's comic series, Anamanaguchi's chiptunes, Paul Robertson's animation and the collected works of the brawler genre will arrive on Xbox Live Arcade on August 25, just fifteen days after its PSN debut.

August 25 happens to be right after the last Summer of Arcade release -- not that it matters. August 25 is still summer, and the game is still on Arcade. It doesn't need Microsoft to promote it, because we're telling you about it right now.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World has been selected as one of Joystiq's E3 Standouts this year. It's got everything an old school gamer could want: a 2D beat-em-up foundation, pixel art by Pirate Baby's Cabana creator Paul Robertson and a chiptune soundtrack by Anamanaguchi -- not to mention it's based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's seminal rock and roll Canadian comic. Can it get any more geek chic than that?

We spoke with Ubisoft production manager Marc-Andre Boivin to learn more about how this nugget of awesomeness came about, the PSN timed-exclusivity agreement and our one disappointment so far: the game's lack of online co-op. The full interview follows.

Joystiq: This Scott Pilgrim game is sparkling with indie charm, and yet it's being made by Ubisoft -- a big company. How did this project come about at Ubisoft?

Marc-Andre Boivin: From my understanding, Universal first proposed a project to Ubisoft, and it was the vision of the initial director and the initial team. They worked with [Scott Pilgrim creator] Bryan Lee O'Malley, with the creative team in place, and they found that the beat-em-up style with the pixel art style was a good direction to go.

I think everyone agreed at that time that this could be interesting, and I think the creator of the books, Bryan Lee O'Malley, liked the genre as well. So they started the project that way. Since the beginning, that was the vision -- a beat-em-up with the pixel art style that we have.

People who love retro games, indie comics, chiptunes, pixel art and brawlers could potentially all find reason to hang their hopes on Ubisoft's PSN/XBLA title. Based on a short demo put together for E3, the game has more than satisfied my hopes. In other words, wow, this game. As a lifelong River City Ransom fan, this game is kind of a dream. A dream with a soundtrack by Anamanaguchi.

If you don't mind spoiling the events of the Scott Pilgrim storyline before the movie (keeping in mind that it's all based on existing comics), you'll be able to play out the story in sprite-based brawler form three days before the movie hits.

At the Ubisoft booth displaying Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (look for our impressions soon!), an August 10 release date was posted next to the game demo. It's a timed exclusive for PSN, so if you're looking to play on Xbox 360, you'll have to endure an unspecified number of (evil) days before you can take on Ramona's evil exes.
