Eidos Montreal confirmed through its official Tumblr today that Thief will be coming to Xbox One. The game, first announced in 2009, was confirmed for PS4, PC and other next-gen consoles in March, which we can now take to mean the next-generation Xbox revealed today.

The Thief reboot reportedly suffered many setbacks during its five-year development period, including significant turnover in staff at Eidos Montreal. The developer included a "glimpse" at the next-gen game in its Tumblr post in the form of a screen with an alarming amount of fire in it.
Thief sneaks onto Xbox One originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 May 2013 17:55:00 EST. The solution found after the break for using an NES controller with Reckless Racing on the iPad is more mechanical than anything -- it attaches the boxy gamepad to a series of robotic fingers that interact with the iPad's capacitive touchscreen. But that doesn't make it any less awesome.
Continue reading Hack connects NES controller to iPad using robo-fingers

Hack connects NES controller to iPad using robo-fingers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 06:10:00 EST. Seeing two images to create a 3D picture is so earlier this year -- Sony has been working on a patent that sends two images from one video screen to two different people, allowing for two players to see different images on the same screen. Each player would need their own set of glasses (which would each pull off the right frames), which would then come with earphones for separate audio feeds, too.

You'd need a special 3D television to do it, but there are all kinds of cool applications -- one person in your house could watch a movie while the other plays games, or you could do local split-screen multiplayer without actually splitting the screen (as seen in the diagram above). The patent even allows for more than two players, and there's even an implementation that would actually send two images each to two players, creating separate 3D views for both viewers. Both patents were filed a year ago, and have just come to light now. As 3D televisions become more common, we'll have to see if Sony brings an actual implementation of this tech to the consumer market.
Sony patents multiplayer stereoscopic system originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 22:00:00 EST. It was conceived by one Patti Deni, who had the 98-inch screen installed in her son's ceiling as a (helluva) surprise. The setup -- comprised of a projector and some reflecting mirrors -- weighs over 300 pounds and required the ceiling to be re-framed and reinforced. The project, which special wiring so that Deni's son can connect his computer and game consoles -- has garnered a Home of the Year nomination from Electronic House magazine.

While Deni claims that the screen is viewable from "just about anywhere," we'd be remiss not to note that any seating position would still require that one look up. We just hope she had the foresight to buy some nice neck pillows (hopefully not of the fuzzy green variety).

[Via Engadget]
Mom installs 98-inch screen in son's ceiling, inspires lifelong neck pain originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 02:00:00 EST. We often take the DS for granted. In such a small plastic shell, it houses many awesome components that come together and provide us with a gaming experience that has no equal. It's got an awesome touch-screen, a built-in microphone and with the aid of a little homebrew, it can be made to do things that we never thought a handheld could do. It's a great little system that we can't lavish with enough praise.

But, if you had one wish, what kind of feature would you give the DS? A third screen? Wireless transmission through your Wii so you can play DS games on your TV? Leather trim? Lay it on us!
DS Daily: Dream feature originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 09:00:00 EST. Famitsu posted some comparison shots of the new PSP-3000 and the older PSP-2000 series, and this is easily the most interesting one to note. Here, you see how much better images off the new screen hold up in comparison to the old one. Looks like we're going to have to change our PSP nicknaming system:

PSP-1000: PSP Phat

PSP-2000: <strike>PSP Lite</strike> PSP Dim

PSP-3000: PSP Brite?

Help us brainstorm here, folks.

[Thanks, Zach M.!]
PSP-3000 screen is berry colorful originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Aug 2008 21:30:00 EST.

Portable screens for home consoles, we will never understand you. Playing Wii Sports in the car? Did nobody learn anything about the serious dangers of bowling in confined spaces from the Japanese Wii safety manual? And all on a tinier screen than you'd ever use at home?

Clearly, not everybody is so indifferent. This clip-on LCD 16:9 panel from Thinkgeek isn't the first of its kind, and we're willing to bet it won't be the last. It's an eye-straining seven inches from corner to corner, but at $109.99 is the cheapest option we've seen to date for those who can't bear to leave their console behind when they step outdoors. $109.99? It took me a while to get around to getting a set when I got my (omgsoawesome) Crimson and Black Lite, and every time the DS was turned on, it was like an exercise in terror. But now all is safe and grand and a shiny new level of safety has been installed. Of course, then it led to another train of thought ... in this house, that screen (or rather, the shield) gets cleaned often. Just a rubdown with a soft cloth, to be sure, but a dirty DS is just not allowed. Are you vigilant, or do you let the fingerprints pile up?
DS Daily: Screen safety originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Nov 2007 09:00:00 EST.
Every Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

It may be time for Nintendo to concede that we've entered the HD-era. Anyone looking to buy a new television will have an increasingly difficult time finding a "classic" SD tube amongst the pristine plasmas, elegant LCoS, lavish LCDs, dazzling DLPs, and (soon-to-come) sexy SEDs. And the technologies behind today's televisions are benefiting greatly from economies of scale, making it easier for consumers to consider going big on their next TV purchase.

For too long, big screen gaming had been confined to dollar-munching arcade machines and reruns of Silver Spoons, but more and more people are finding out what it feels like to have a truly super Mario kicking gargantuan goombas across the Mushroom Kingdom. If you haven't yet been bitten by the big bug, today I'll make you feel the itch.

Continue reading Revolutionary: Super Size Mii

Revolutionary: Super Size Mii originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 13:00:00 EST. We admired Engadget's custom-made portable Wii, but most gamers don't want to take such drastic steps to achieve Wii mobility. That's where Century steps in.

They've made a portable 7-inch LCD screen that connects to the Wii, and contains its own sensor bar. It's priced at 14,800 yen ($120)? Good thing we're scary recluses and don't go places anyway! That doesn't seem terrible for an LCD screen, but it's more than we'd enjoy paying for the privilege of a smaller screen.
LCD screen lets you waggle on the go originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Jun 2007 10:00:00 EST.
The tumultuous journey to the mythical PSP redesign is still going strong. This video of a new portable screen developed by Sony only adds fuel to the grandiose rumors that have been spreading throughout the web. This new technology seems ideally suited for a handheld device, but it may be too bleeding-edge for it to come out in this generation of PSPs. For now, Sony's official stance is that a redesign is simply rumor. But, wouldn't it be incredible to see this tech used in the "PSP Slim"?

A 7-inch (or 8.5-inch) screen display for the Wii isn't that impressive when compared to some of the other shrunken setups we've seen, but its portability might interest on-the-go gamers. As we've come to expect from accessories manufacturer Pega, the attachable screen provides just enough functionality to be usable, allowing for volume/color control, four-direction visual angle adjustment, and little else. There's something to be said though about being able to play a game of Wii Sports: Golf with the display whenever the mood strikes -- mainly, "Wow, this sure would be a lot more fun if we had a bigger TV. LCDArm has started marketing (but not yet selling) a piece of plastic that goes over an LCD TV screen and protects it from ... miscellaneous projectiles. The nature of these projectiles is not made explicit, but we can think of only one item that has gotten attention for busting people's televisions. We might be electronic Darwinists who believe that people who can't keep their Wiimotes in hand shouldn't have fancy TV's, but that's no reason not to take precautions against friends' sweatiness.

The device is also an anti-glare shield, designed to block harmful ultraviolet light (in the words of the PR blurb: "Reduces ultraviolet (UV) rays and health to human eyes"). You know, because you don't want to see all of that light that comes out of your TV. Atlus Editor Clayton Chan, who worked on both titles, said that they gameplay in Final Fantasy Tactics definitely wins, but the characters in Luminous Arc are hard to beat. That's high praise, considering not many games can stand next to FFT.

See for yourself, at least when it comes to screens, after the jump.
Continue reading Luminous Arc from every angle

Luminous Arc from every angle originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 May 2007 17:00:00 EST. Every Saturday, PSP Fanboy will answer your burning questions. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy." NOTE: We do NOT answer questions related to downloading illegal copies of games. Stop asking.

Q: Does Andrew hand-select his emails for Ask PSP Fanboy?
A: Yes. Some questions simply can't be answered, while others aren't worth answering at all.

Q: How many people have installed custom firmware on their PSP systems?
A: This is probably an impossible question to answer. There's no way of tracking all the PSP systems out there, nor is there a fair way of evaluating it. If we polled the PSP Fanboy community, it will be more likely that we'll have users of custom firmware -- but will a casual player even know about homebrew? Most likely not. The one thing we can say, however, is that custom firmware is becoming increasingly popular. A look at dark-alex.org's alexa stats reveals the incredible growing demand for custom firmware.

But looks aren't everything, and though we've been rough on Wii graphics lately (it's only because we love you, Wii!), the fact remains that Gundam games tend to be a love-it or hate-it proposition.

Of course, it all may be a moot issue until or unless the game heads out of Japan, but that doesn't mean we can't look! We can't think of any other possible explanation for something this atrocious.

What's going on here? How can this be considered acceptable ... and how can anyone bestow even a middling-good score on such a sight? We love us some Spider-Man and all, but this game would have to be the best thing ever (moreso even than sliced bread) to wrangle an 83%. Maybe we're just pickier than most, but this looks like a sign that not only is there something wrong with how some third-party Wii games are being handled, but maybe the review system isn't all it's cracked up to be, either.

[Via Digg]
Forlorn Spidey has nowhere to sling his webs originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 May 2007 17:25:00 EST. We've seen some of this before, particularly the lower right panel, but only in scans -- look at the difference in the full color screenshots! The production values on this are staggering; remember the jaggy screenshots from Chocobo Tales? The backgrounds in Final Fantasy III? Those games are beautiful in motion, but suffer somewhat in stills. If this comparison is any indication of what's in store for us with Dragon Quest IX, we're not sure we can handle that much awesome.
Dragon Quest IX in full color originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 May 2007 14:20:00 EST. This is getting entirely too common with games we're interested in, like Professor Layton and his Many Mysterious Venues. Rune Factory 2, like its predecessor, is a spin-off from the Harvest Moon series. There's some debate as to whether or not we even need the first title, but we're willing to give it a spin when it finally comes out. As the domain name implies, the emphasis is on the images. "The Gamers' Gallery was created because all other screenshot viewers are severely lacking. I really just wanted to create the best damn screenshot viewer on the internet," says Puleo.

So did he? Puleo admits TGG is still in its infancy, but the potential is there. Galleries aren't buried behind pages of fluff and the ability to vote and comment on images reinforces the community dynamic -- and adds comic relief. For a small fee ($10/yr) users can become contributing members, unlocking high-res images (without watermarks!) and the ability to create galleries and a custom webpage. <strike>We hope subscribers also get a watermark-free experience.</strike> Shameless stamping is one lasting "feature" that 'lacking viewers' rarely lack. Let's hope Puleo and staff decide to break the old habit (for the non-subscriber's sake).
The Gamers' Gallery aims to be web's 'best damned screenshot viewer' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 16:55:00 EST. If you can't seem to get enough of Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, then you're in luck -- because the good folks from Team Ninja are all about giving up the goods. May they never, ever stop.

While we've seen a few of these in with the scans, it's nice to look at them all by their lonesome ... and envision how we'll be spending all our free time in the future. Many titles have used these features as essential elements of gameplay (see: Trauma Center, Kirby's Canvas Curse), but in many cases, we can't help but feel that developers are missing out on the some of the opportunities afforded them by the DS.

Where is our hockey game, in which the stylus is used as a mini-hockey stick to accurately handle the puck? Why don't games with magically-based battle systems allow you to shout a short incantation to activate a spell? Lost Magic had a player draw runes, which was creative, but we've been wanting to bust out dramatic Latin phrases for quite some time.

Do you have any ideas that you think developers should implement? Has the true potential of the DS been fully reached? And who can resist tiny Sim Santa and his cute little reindeer?

The new stuff looks to largely concern Save the City mode, which thrusts the player into a real city and offers them challenges to solve, from earthquakes to snarled traffic and hey, even UFOs. Also -- and our loose translation may be incorrect -- it looks as though fires in your city can be handled by blowing into the microphone. If style was everything, this one would already be lining up for accolades. Let's just hope the unusual graphic adventure (set in 1979) is as good as it looks.

We've seen a lot of these before, in video from the game, but it's nice to get to pore over some of the more interesting shots. On the latest IGN Weekly, Matt spends around ten minutes going through the Wii interface (mainly, the options menu) in detail. The menu seems to confirm the existence of one Wii code per system, as opposed to per game, which should make matchmaking at least slightly more convenient. He goes through Sound, Screen, Parental Controls, Sensitivity Options, and pretty much everything you'll see come November 19th. It's worth a watch, so check it out.
Ten minute run-through with the Wii interface originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 28 Oct 2006 15:59:00 EST. But can you tell which screen has a better contrast rating under high ambient light? For that you need a laboratory spectroradiometer, which the fine folks over at PC Mag just so happened to use in their recent screen quality tests.

The tests and explanations all get a bit technical, but the final results break it all down, giving both systems a picture quality rating of "A." Wait a second... they're both equal? That won't settle anything for the fanboys. How about this: the PSP got a "B+" in overall image and picture quality, outclassing the "B" rating for the DS. Chew over that, all you Nintendumb fans! LOL!!!!!!1one.

[Via PSPFanboy]
PSP LCD FTW over DS LOL originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Oct 2006 12:25:00 EST. To a casual observer, both have stunning displays. But how do they fare when they're analyzed by the same methods used on high-end HDTVs? The report is incredibly thorough, so I'll just give you some key highlights:

Both the DS & PSP screens feature incredible DPI (dots per inch): 110 for the DS, 130 for the PSP. The PSP is the clear victor here, cramming in more pixels into its screen per square inch. (For reference, a 19" LCD monitor has a DPI of 86. So both screens are quite impressive.)

The DS Lite's brightness is no joke: it can go as high as 200 cd/m². The PSP, even when plugged into an AC outlet, can only produce 148 cd/m². When running solely off of battery power, the brightness drops even further to a maximum of 115 cd/m². (Clearly, Nintendo wants to destroy your eyes faster than Sony.)

Although the DS Lite is much brighter the the PSP, it has an extremely limited viewing angle. The PSP outclasses the DS in terms of viewability, earning it "first place among all of the mobile displays." (Clearly, Sony wants everyone on the subway to be able to see the smut you're watching on the go.)

They take on the appearance of a thin plastic film, and help protect it from the crazy things you do to it, you maniac. There are two variations of the product, one that protects the screen itself, and another that protects the entire face of your PSP. Personally, I'd have to recommend the screen protector over the face protector because the installation of the product, although simple, is also quite cumbersome. The film is very durable, but also incredibly adhesive, even to your fingers. It's incredibly easy to trap finger prints on the film, and distort the shield before application. The precision required for the full face shield is a bit demanding: it requires you to align small openings in the plastic nearly perfectly with the buttons on the system itself. This is where many things can go wrong in the installation.

Once applied, it takes a bit of effort to squeeze out the bubbles underneath. In the best of scenarios, your system will not have anything noticeable on it, but in the worst case scenario, very obvious bumps will be apparent. Problems should be minimized with the screen protector, as opposed to the body protector because the margin for error is much more forgiving. If you manage to install the product without a hitch, it is surprisingly durable and comes with a lifetime guarantee, which is pretty sweet. The screen shield is $13 on their official website.
Review: invisibleSHIELD originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Aug 2006 23:00:00 EST. The aesthetics are shaping up to that next-gen feel, especially with the environments. Apparently gamers will be able to deck these characters out in different clothes and accessories purchased from an in-game shop. Makes you wonder if they plan on adding any support for micro-transactions over the internet as well.
New screenshots for Virtua Fighter 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Jun 2006 11:00:00 EST. If you're the next aspiring American Idol, you may find this worth checking out. Last week some new My SingStar images surfaced showing off the next-gen karaoke game for PlayStation 3. It gives off a quirky vibe to those who may not be keen on this type of game, but we could be seeing some really sweet applications thanks to the PS3 hardware.

With secret weapons emerging, hardware of the like could provide a fresh angle on a song-driven game like this. Though you can only push an EyeToy or camera so far for a karaoke title. However there's always the possibility of downloading all kinds of new songs over their network platform too. And what about the chance of downloading user-created content as well? Maybe that's just wishful thinking, but hey... it could happen!

New My SingStar screens: it's karaoke for PS3! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Jun 2006 12:45:00 EST.
