Wii Fit is selling like gangbusters in Britain, where it accounts for half of all Wii software sold in the last week, and has given Nintendo its first one-two finish in the All Formats Chart since 2003. And guess what? It's more or less the same story throughout the rest of Europe.

The Irish are shedding the Guinness pounds, the Germans are working off those brätwurst, and Sweden ... well, we don't really have a lazy, go-to food stereotype for the Swedes. Anyhow, the point is: they're all loving it, and if Wii Fit doesn't appear in a chart (see: Spain, Denmark), it's probably because a country hasn't got it yet, or the charts have fallen behind.

Mind you, don't expect any of this Nintendo dominance to last: next week's charts are guaranteed to be all about one game (yet we suspect Wii Fit might give you have better legs than GTA IV in the long-term). Lean past the break for this week's European charts.

Featuring charts from across the region, Another Week in Europe documents the buying habits and quirky tastes of a whole continent of Wii lovers.

While yours truly had trouble tracking down a copy of Mario Kart Wii on the high street (for our review), it appears plenty of others around Europe had no such problem.

Bar Denmark (where it has now dropped to fifth), the title sits at the top of every European chart, and we suspect it might even be influencing the sales of other games. Surely the rise of Mario Kart DS to 8th in Ireland, 8th in France, and 7th in Germany can't all be a mere coincidence? By our reckoning, Mario Kart Wii has ramped up Europe's interest in Mario Kart generally. Fortunately, Mario Kart DS is the bee's knees!

Finally, this week's overachiever award goes to Sega Superstars Tennis -- despite the Wii version's lack of online play, Sega's tennis/blue skies extravaganza climbed to fourth in the UK. Head beyond the break for more European chartage, and please accept our humble apologies for the lack of a Spanish top ten -- that should be back next week.

Despite our enthusiasm (and the enthusiasm of Sega fanboys everywhere) over Sega Superstars Tennis, a release that drips with fan service, the game failed to inspire consumers to rush out and buy the game like they did with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games? Not enough Mario, perhaps? Or olympics?

Whatever the case, slow sales for the tennis title has given GameStop early cause to slash its prices for Sega Superstars Tennis across all platforms, and you can now buy the Wii game for as little as $19.99. It's a great bargain, considering the game was released only a month ago! You can order Sega Superstars Tennis through GameStop's online shop, but why not save a few bucks and pick it up at one of the retailer's local stores?

Unlike reigning full beard freestyle world champion Elmar Weisser of Germany (who we admire fiercely), we have mixed feelings about this week's European sales charts.

For example, while we're heartened by the success of debutant Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (5th in the UK, and the Wii edition supplemented sales of other versions across Europe -- not bad for a game that appeared on every other console last October), we're irked by the flat performance of House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return (15th in Britain, and nowhere to be seen in the charts of mainland Europe).

Europe, if you're reading, stop buying Game Party (7th in UK), Smarty Pants (10th in Spain), and Mario & bleeding Sonic (high everywhere) and let's get something half-decent up there for a change. Sega Bass Fishing should make next week's chart, so that'd be a good place to start -- let's have that top ten somewhere, please. Sigh. At least Elmar will never fail to impress us. Ah, there's nothing like the smell of a fresh demo on a Friday morning. Today's Marketplace offering is none other than Sega Superstars Tennis. The demo offers single player and local versus multiplayer. The game brings together plenty of Sega "superstars" (Amigo? A superstar? Really?) for some friendly tennis action and tennis based mini-games. Taking a cue from Nintendo, the game focuses infuses typical tennis mechanics with fantasy court settings and the ability to enter Superstar Mode, which grants special powers to each character. The demo doesn't last very long, but new features are unlocked through successive play-throughs, so give it a shot.

The SEGA marketing folks just announced that a SEGA Superstars Tennis demo will be headed to the Xbox Live Marketplace in the near future, as soon as it passes Microsoft certification. Though, the demo may be end up being restricted to North American Live subscribers seeing that such restrictions have been implemented on the PSN Store where the demo has already been released. SEGA also felt the need to rub some salt in our scabbed over Bloodshot demo sore by mentioned that the Condemned 2: Bloodshot demo should be making an XBLM release soon'ish as well. To date, the Bloodshot demo has been "coming soon" for over two weeks. Anyone willing to bet that we don't see either SEGA promised demo until mid-April?

Sega and Sumo Digital may have served up a worthwhile tennis option for the Wii, but can the DS title rock the court? From the early reviews, it looks like the character roster is the best thing the handheld has going for it, though there are some solid gameplay mechanics buried beneath the fanservice.

IGN: 69% -- Solid, but too easy. "If you replaced the traditional tennis courts with ones taking place in such SEGA universes as Sonic the Hedgehog's Green Hill Zone, the Nights dreamworld Nightopia, and House of the Dead's Curian Mansion, and then replace the professional athletes with Sonic and Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog, AiAi from Super Monkey Ball, Beat from Jet Grind Radio, and Ulala from Space Channel 5, you'd get SEGA Superstars Tennis. And that's exactly what Sumo, the developer of Virtua Tennis, has done for SEGA ... But compared to other tennis games, it feels more automatic than it should be."

GamePro: 45% -- This is on the DS why? "The final thing to keep in mind when avoiding Sega Superstars Tennis for DS is that the game looks better on consoles. Also, the play style isn't really suited to handhelds, since there doesn't appear to be a way to save your progress in a tournament. While the character roster has potential, the tennis here is just too gimmicky and frustrating to recommend."

Nintendo Power: 80% -- The Nintendo magazine found themselves immersed in a solid experience -- for both tennis and Sega fans. "The default button-based control scheme is less forgiving than that of the Mario titles, calling for more precision and tighter timing -- either a welcome challenge or a minor frustration, depending on how much you mind AiAi acing one past you ... Control issues aside, Sega Superstar Tennis is swimming in clever game references and should be fun for even a casual Sega fan."

Sega's decision to release Sega Superstars Tennis in March was a bold one: Many companies moved their releases out of the way of Nintendo's major offering -- and those games aren't competitive multiplayer games starring a cast of iconic video game company mascots from different games, battling on a variety of stages inspired by the games from whence the characters came.

No, we don't think Sega Superstars Tennis is a direct response to or an attempt to compete with Super Smash Bros. Brawl -- if it were, we wouldn't see Sonic in Nintendo's game. Sega Superstars Tennis is a smaller release, meant, we would guess, to bridge the gap between "casual gamers" and Sega superfans. Or, to be more cynical, to be a Virtua Tennis sequel without the likeness rights. Did Sega and Sumo Digital serve up an ace or a fault? Or is the game best analogized by some other tennis term? It's sort of a lonely week for new releases. It's not that we aren't seeing anything worthwhile, though. Nope, this week we have the much awaited sequel to Rainbow Six Vegas, sagely titled Rainbow Six Vegas 2 to in order to nullify any confusion. Remember, this is the last time you'll be getting your 6 on in Vegas, so get it while the gettin's good (alternately, you could wait until it goes down in price and get it while the gettin's better). Also releasing this week is the latest curiosity from Sega, Sega Superstars Tennis. Alas, it seems Sega has more trouble wedging its beloved characters into the sports genre than Nintendo does, as the game has thus far received only fair to middling reviews.

As huge fans of Nintendo, we often find ourselves being their harshest critics. One of the problems we've always had with the company was its lack of devotion to a competitive online arena, where gamers could do comparable things online with their Wii that the Xbox 360 and PS3 can do.

Why do we bring all of this up? Well, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game will have the online play and it's missing from Nintendo platforms because of "time and development resource constraints." We just wonder what kind of constraints would allow them to include it into the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions and not in the Wii version? Hey, we're willing to wait a little longer so long as what we're getting is a complete product and not the table scraps left from the other versions of Sega Superstars Tennis. Sure, we get the best control method (presumably), but is it worth it?

Regardless, we're still excited for the game. We just wish we could enjoy the game with you.

Sega just served up more footage of Sega Superstars Tennis, and all the ingredients are in place for one of the most quintessentially Sega experiences in years: cartoon monkeys called Amigo, blue skies, Ulala, and Sonic's horrible voice. Playing tennis to a rousing rendition of Samba de Janeiro, even in videogame form, feels a bit weird, but we strongly suspect we won't care!

Past the break: footage of Ulala playing on home territory. The resolution of the video isn't the best, but we're sure she plays a shot through her legs, a la Martina Navratilova!

GameTrailers has posted a handful of new Sega Superstars Tennis videos. It looks like Sega's new tennis title will come packed with various mini-games. The two latest videos show off both a ring collecting Sonic mini-game and a another -- the objective of which we can't quite discern -- based on ChuChu Rocket. The games look entertaining enough, but let's just hope the tennis is up to snuff. After all, mini-games are mini for a reason. Having said that, we pray that there's a Space Channel 5 dancing mini-game with "Space Michael."

We haven't seen much Samba de Amigo related media for Sega's upcoming tennis game, aside from a handful of screenshots. Fortunately, the Samba stage looks to be pretty great, if we do say so ourselves. The above trailer may be super short, but the stage seems to have all the elements of "awesome," like a cheetah band, good music, and bra-wearing cacti. It's nice to see some fun characters make a return from the original Dreamcast game -- we're sure our favorite maraca-playing monkey would be lonely without them.

Europe might not be able to Brawl with Sonic in March, but they can make the speedy blue hedgehog pick up a tennis racquet in Sega Superstars Tennis. Originally dated for March 28th, Eurogamer reports that the game won't take as long to hit European shores as we originally thought.

While the game's release was only bumped up eight days to March 20th, Europeans can rest assured that they're getting it only two days after us folks in America (compared to the usual gap, that's not so bad). Some of the staff at Nintendo Wii Fanboy are super hyped about this game for the Jet Set Radio references alone, so we hope those of you in Europe who feel the same way enjoy these good tidings. Unfortunately, once again you'll be forced to choose between motion controls and online play.

We're pleased to see that the bizarre Sega-history minigames are intact in the DS release of Sega Superstars Tennis. Here, Ulala, a dancing reporter from a satellite-based TV station in a retro-futuristic musical world, is taking a break from rescuing Michael Jackson from TV-faced aliens to play Space Harrier using a tennis racquet. So, you know, it's your basic tennis game.

And since we follow all Jet Set Radio-related developments eagerly, we'd like to point out that the second-best-known member of the GG's, Gum, is visible in these screenshots as a playable character. It remains to be seen if you have to jump on top of a car in order to convince her to join.

Sega Superstars Tennis' joyful habit of meshing together franchises such as Jet Set Radio, Samba de Amigo, Space Channel 5, and OutRun has already left us smitten with the game, even though it's just tennis.

Indeed, our extreme fondness for the title meant it only hurt more to hear that this celebration of Sega awesomeness would not have online play in the Wii version. The sad news was casually revealed in an IGN preview of the title, though we had our suspicions back when the game was announced. We'd gladly exchange the one noteworthy perk of the Wii version -- multiple control schemes -- for a chance to face down fellow Beat fans from other continents.

We know that Sega Superstars Tennis is a tennis game with a bunch of Sega folks in it, but until now we haven't known much else. How would the Wii controls work? What kind of special powers can each character use? CVG sat down with Sumo Digital to discuss the Wii version and get some specifics.

First, and most important for distinguishing between the Wii and other versions, the controls. SST will in fact use a motion-based control setup. As Sumo describes it: "We take the Wii remote's speed and direction and use this to determine the shot you get. But of course, as with real tennis, the better your timing, the better the shot you'll do." With somewhat direct translation between movement and in-game response, this sounds much more Wii Sports and less Rockstar Table Tennis.

The developers also revealed some of the minigame options, which are unsurprisingly based on Sega classics, and can be played single- or multiplayer. They described a Space Harrier game in which the player hits tennis balls at the arcade game's enemies, and a Puyo Puyo game involving a wall of Puyos that must be cleared with tennis balls. In addition, new screenshots (in our gallery) reveal a House of the Dead zombie-killing minigame, and Sonic, Chu Chu Rocket, Super Monkey Ball and Jet Set Radio minigames that we don't quite understand. The screens don't depict the Wii version, but they illustrate new gameplay elements and that is important.

Finally, a couple of new characters were revealed, with an indication that some were still being kept under wraps. In addition to the ones we've seen, Shadow the Hedgehog, Reala from NiGHTS, and Gum from Jet Set Radio will be playable.

If, like us, Sega Superstars Tennis has driven you into a tennis frenzy (a "tenzy"), you will be very happy to gawk at these new screenshots. If you're not into tennis, but all about Sega (which we were until Sega convinced us fully) you can enjoy picking out characters in the background of the Jet Set Radio stage.

In this screenshot, there's an obvious police contingent surrounding the stage, leading us to wonder if they're there to spectate or if Captain Onishima will be arresting us for playing tennis. And on the right side: Jet Set Radio one-punch knockout broadcaster Professor K! In another screenshot, you can see the jumpsuited GG, Tab. We love you, Sega Superstars Tennis, for looking like Jet Set Radio sometimes. You can also check out a bit of character art here.

The latest batch of screenshots from Sega Superstars Tennis doesn't reveal any new characters at all, and that unfortunately includes the rumored Alex Kidd. We can't imagine that Sega would be withholding Alex from these screens for some kind of big reveal, unless ... oh, no. They're relaunching the character!

It's more likely that they just forgot about Alex Kidd and neglected to include him in the screens. Luckily, we can distract ourselves from the paucity of Kidds with new screens and character art of the other players. Look, Beat looks kind of cel-shaded as a result of his low-polygon model!

Know who we'd like to see developing on the Wii? Tetsuya Mizuguchi, that's who. Some of his games would work beautifully on Nintendo's console. We can totally picture ourselves playing through a motion-based Space Channel 5, or using the Wii Remote to point and shoot in Rez.

Wii owners who also happen to be Mizuguchi fans shouldn't get their hopes up, though. Mizuguchi seems keen enough on the Wii itself, but confessed in an interview with Wired that he was a "little bit worried" about the strength of Nintendo games. We presume this is a reference to an increasingly common complaint from publishers and other industry folk that Nintendo's first-party titles are hogging sales.

Looks like an Ulala appearance in Sega Superstars Tennis could be the closest we get to grooving with Space Michael. Cry.

Come on, Sega. We're doing our very best to love your new mascot tennis game, and for the most part it's been quite easy. Putting wonderful Sega characters into a wonderful Sega tennis game (Virtua Tennis) is exactly what we'd ask for if we were asked, and if we were clever enough to think of it. Virtua Tennis is excellent enough when it's all boring humans, and can only be made better with space reporters and two different varieties of cartoon monkey.

But the European boxart for Sega Superstars Tennis dampens even our enthusiasm somewhat. We understand the reasoning (he's very popular) but we still would have chosen not to put that hedgehog front and center. But in their zeal to sell this to Everybody, Sega has failed to emphasize the most amazing thing about the game: the wide variety of Seganess found within. And in so doing, they've given a bland box to what looks like an extraordinarily jubilant game.

Some other characters are indeed on the box (in the area not taken up by Sonic), but where's Beat? Where's NiGHTS? Where's Alex Kidd (who we have yet to see)? Where are the wacky Sega backdrops? With the Sonic-themed stage (which looks the most like a normal, boring tennis court of any of them) and the centered Sonic, somebody could walk by and mistake this for a Sonic Tennis, which nobody wants.

SEGA just released a Sega Superstars Tennis debut trailer today and we'll admit it. This happy, fun trailer instantly "made" our Sunday.

The debut trailer doesn't show one lick of actual gameplay, but does give us other informative niblets all while being an entertaining tennis spectacle. The trailer does confirm that SEGA characters Aiai (Super Monkey Ball), Beat (Jet Set Radio), Ulala (Space Channel 5), Amigo (Samba de Amigo), Nights (Nights), Dr. Eggman (Sonic the Hedgehog) and our blue Sonic the Hedgehog to be included in Superstars Tennis. We also suspect other "mystery" characters to be included or unlockable, because that's usually how these games go. So, enjoy the Sega Superstars Tennis debut trailer and be sure to watch for Amigo's introduction. His stone, expressionless face creeped us out, but the sound of his maracas made us smile for some reason.

The trailer for Sega Superstars Tennis. This thing is brutally insane. Beat's all skating up a tree and flying 50 feet into the air to return a shot, Dr. Eggman's got multiple bionic rackets, and Sonic does a loop at super-speed to build up momentum for his return, after rescuing Amigo from a potentially fatal fall.

We want to play the trailer. There's no way any of this awesome stuff is going to happen in the game. It's all going to be Sega characters playing tennis, with, like, a few special moves. Not that that isn't great, it's just not ... brutally insane.

Oh. Em. Gee. Okay, that Start sign looks awfully familiar. And those "left turn" signs? The palm trees? Yep, a closer look confirms it: Sega Superstars Tennis will have an OutRun stage, hopefully with majestic red Ferraris roaring past as you play.

For veteran Sega fans such as ourselves, this kind of fan service is irresistible. First the Shibuya bus terminal, and now this. The only possible downer? Due to its high resolution, we suspect this screenshot is from the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions of the game. That's not to say we won't get an OutRun stage in the Wii version, but please understand, Sega: we need this.

You know buttons, right? Those clicky things on either side of the touchscreen? New screenshots of Sega Superstars Tennis show the view on the bottom screen, which contains nothing more than a scoreboard. There are no icons to tap, no moves to select, and definitely no predefined areas to rub. Just character portraits (of what we assume are the player-controlled characters in each team, in the case of doubles) and scores. You're certainly not controlling the players directly via dragging them around, because they're up on the top screen.

Of course, stylus controls could still turn up. This display could be temporary, to be replaced when developer Sumo Digital figures out the user interface for the touch controls. Or it could be what displays if you choose a traditional control scheme.

We freaked out when we saw the first Wii screenshots of Sega Superstars Tennis, because of a large amount of Jet Set Radio-related content. Well, it turns out that the DS version also features Beat as a playable character, along with a Shibuya Bus Terminal-located tennis court. Jet Set Radio is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and so is anything that reminds us of it. Even in an extremely graphically impaired DS version, it is beautiful and joyous and fills us with love for video games.

This is the first time we've seen a Space Channel 5 stage in any iteration of Sega Superstars Tennis, and while it's not as visually exciting in screens as Shibuya-cho, we assume it'll be vibrant and colorful in motion, pulsing in time to the game's signature music. We're so glad to see Sega bringing back some of their Dreamcast-era classics. It was an excellent time for Sega (creatively).

If Sega wants to continue trading on our memories of when they were great, they are welcome to do so. We are willing to be exploited in this manner.

IGN posted an interview with Sumo Digital's Omar Woodley which finally reveals some details about the Wii-specific version of Sega Superstars Tennis. Because we saw a Jet Set Radio stage. And we also saw Beat as one of the playable characters. Look at that, it's the Shibuya bus terminal and it looks just like in the game and oh man we're hyperventilating and this is awesome SEGA IS AWESOME AND SO IS LIFE. As of right now, we're kicking off a Matt C.-Zack-and-Wiki-style campaign to promote this game -- except it's not enough for you to buy just one copy. Buy one copy for every system, even if you don't have that system. Buy it for your friends, buy it for your mom, and buy it for your dog. It is very important that Sega knows that they need to be spending their time filling our lives with more Jet Set Radio.

While competing together at this year's Olympics, it seems some excellent business advice passed from Mario to Sonic, the end result manifesting in the newly announced Sega Superstars Tennis. It's-a Mario Tennis, but with-a Sonic! Mario's sales pitch serve must have left quite the impression, as Sega is quite confident of its huge stable of "cherished" characters ready to wield racquets in an anthropomorphic Wimbledon.

Set for release in early 2008 on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Wii and DS, Sega Superstars Tennis promises over 15 playable Sega idols (it says here) with the famous hedgehog joined by two monkeys (one rockin' and one rollin') and roving space reporter, Ulala. The remainder of the roster has yet to be announced, a clever move that is sure to guarantee at least 15 minutes of fervent internet speculation. Just don't count on Ecco the Dolphin's appearance -- having him flop about on a tennis court as he suffers the most excruciating death in the blistering sun would probably be frowned upon by the ESRB. And PETA.

Curiously, the press release hints at "new and innovative ways of enjoying some of SEGA's classic titles" and, less curiously, confirms online support for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. Expect to learn more once developer Sumo Digital figures out how to lure Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki onto the court. (Obvious answer: Putting Vyse from Skies of Arcadia on the other side of the net. He is a sailor, after all.)

In news that can be filed under the "where the heck did this come from?" category is a new tennis game from SEGA aimed at competing with Nintendo's cartoony fun Mario Tennis franchise. SEGA Superstars Tennis is set to release on all major platforms and will feature a mix of SEGA characters including Sonic the Hedgehog and Ulala all with their own special power-ups and abilities playing on SEGA themed courts like Green Hill Zone and Samba de Amigo's Carnival Park. Seeing the Mario Tennis similarities yet? Superstars Tennis will also feature the standard assortment of gameplay options including exhibition, tournament and online play modes. Be sure to watch for Sonic's crazy good acing skills to land on the Xbox 360 early next year.

Hey, Sonic's already appearing in another sports game! Sega announced today that they're making a new tennis game for just about every system, called Sega Superstars Tennis. The concept is simple enough, and is pretty much contained in the title: Sega characters playing tennis. Already confirmed as part of the cast of "over 15" characters are Sonic, Super Monkey Ball's AiAi, Space Channel 5's Ulala, and Amigo from Samba De Amigo. They'll be playing on courts inspired by Sega games, like the Samba court found above.

Obviously that's not a DS screenshot, but it gives you an idea of what the game's about. We may balk at Sonic games, but we are ravenous for Sega mascot games like this one. The game became an insta-buy for us as soon as we saw Ulala; unfortunately, there are way more than 15 characters we'd like to see in this game, and at least one more slot will probably be taken up by Tails or Shadow or some other Sonic friend. We're hoping for Ryo Hazuki, ourselves. Or Gilius Thunderhead. Or Joe Musashi, or Alex Kidd, or Michael Jackson.

Out of nowhere, Sega announced today that it will be working with developer Sumo Digital on a new sports title, Sega Superstars Tennis, for a wide range of platforms, including the DS and Wii. As you've probably surmised from the game's title, Sega Superstars Tennis will feature a celeb-filled cast picked from Sega's stable of classics. Already, Sonic, AiAi (Super Monkey Ball), Ulala (Space Channel 5), and Amigo (Samba de Amigo) have been confirmed as four of the fifteen playable characters.

Before you break out the party hats to celebrate this Sega-themed adaptation of Mario Tennis, it's worth noting that while online modes are planned for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases, nothing of the sort has been indicated for the Wii version. Some might feel it's a negligible issue, but being the pessimists we are, we take it as pointing to a lack of dedication towards the Wii variant.

Though we can't say for certain whether the screenshots released so far are representative of what Sega Superstars Tennis' graphics will look like on the Wii (they could be grabbed from the 360/PS3 versions), you can still get a pretty good idea of what to expect from the game with the images posted after the break. Expect to see Sega Superstars Tennis early 2008.
