"I need to play <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/avatar-the-last-airbender"><em>Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Burning Earth</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega-superstars-tennis">Sega Superstars Tennis</a> </em>right the hell now, and I'm not going to leave my house to do it!"<br />
<br />
Listen, we've all been there. ... Well, <em>we </em>haven't. But we assume you have, or else why are you reading this post? Why else would you need to know that both games <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2010/03/23/games-on-demand-avatar-the-last-air-bender-the-burning-earth-and-sega-superstars-tennis.aspx">had been added</a> to Xbox Live's Games on Demand service for $20 a piece? Hey, what kind of game are you playing here?<br />
<br />
...What's that? ... You just wanted an excuse to see us? Aww, we wanted to see you too. <br />
In these belt-tightening, penny-pinching times, it literally pays to have a nose for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/sales/">bargains</a>. That's where we, or rather Gamefly, comes in. The game rental outfit has a broad selection of <em>used</em> Wii software for low, world banking crisis-friendly prices, and we chose ten of the best sub-$20 games to tempt you. Thar be bargains ahead!<br />
<ul>

And guess what? It's more or less the same story throughout the rest of Europe.<br /><br />The Irish are shedding the Guinness pounds, the Germans are working off those br&auml;twurst, and Sweden ... well, we don't really have a lazy, go-to food stereotype for the Swedes. Anyhow, the point is: they're all loving it, and if <span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Fit</span> doesn't appear in a chart (see: Spain, Denmark), it's probably because a country hasn't got it yet, or the charts have fallen behind.<br /><br />Mind you, don't expect any of this Nintendo dominance to last: next week's charts are guaranteed to be all about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/Grand-Theft-Auto-IV/">one game</a> (yet we suspect <span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Fit</span> might <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">give you</span> have better legs than <span style="font-style: italic;">GTA IV</span> in the long-term). <br />You'll have to forgive our convoluted title -- really, it couldn't be helped. If it's not immediately clear, and we very much doubt that it is, GameStop has two great DS online and in-store deals this week:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=66369">Touch Detective 2 1/2</a></em>: $9.99, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/ds-fanboy-review-touch-detective-2-1-2/">our review</a><br /></li>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=68073">Sega Superstars Tennis</a></em>: $14.99, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/metareview-sega-superstars-tennis/">metareview</a><br /></li>
</ul>
Which both add up to $25 (provided that you round up)! See what we did there? Two-and-a-half $10 bills? $25? Come on!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/spend-2-1-2-10-dollar-bills-on-touch-detective-sega-superstars/">Spend 2 1/2 $10-dollar bills on Touch Detective, Sega Superstars Tennis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 10:30:00 EST. Surely the rise of <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Kart DS</span> to 8th in Ireland, 8th in France, and 7th in Germany can't all be a mere coincidence? By our reckoning, <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Kart Wii</span> has ramped up Europe's interest in <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Kart</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">generally</span>. Fortunately, <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Kart DS</span> is the bee's knees!<br /><br />Finally, this week's overachiever award goes to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/metareview-sega-superstars-tennis/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Sega Superstars Tennis</span></a> -- despite the Wii version's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/no-online-in-sega-superstar-tennis-wii-because-of-time-constrai/">lack of online play</a>, Sega's tennis/blue skies extravaganza climbed to <span style="font-style: italic;">fourth</span> in the UK. Head beyond the break for more European chartage, and please accept our humble apologies for the lack of a Spanish top ten -- that should be back next week.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/26/another-week-in-europe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Europe</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/26/another-week-in-europe/">Another Week in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST. <br />Despite our enthusiasm (and the enthusiasm of <a href="http://www.ukresistance.co.uk/">Sega fanboys</a> everywhere) over <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega-superstars-tennis">Sega Superstars Tennis</a></em>, a release that drips with fan service, the game failed to inspire consumers to rush out and buy the game like they did with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-and-sonic">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a></em>? Not enough Mario, perhaps? Or olympics?<br /><br />Whatever the case, slow sales for the tennis title has given GameStop early cause to slash its prices for <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> across all platforms, and you can now buy the Wii game for as little as $19.99. It's a great bargain, considering the game was released only a month ago! You can order <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> through GameStop's online shop, but why not save a few bucks and pick it up at one of the retailer's local stores?<br /><br /><br />[Via GameStop circular]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/26/sega-superstars-tennis-bombs-marked-down-to-20/">Sega Superstars Tennis bombs, marked down to $20</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Apr 2008 16:30:00 EST. Have you always had a dark fantasy about watching <em>Space Channel 5</em>'s Ulala play hot, sweaty tennis against <em>Sonic</em>'s squeeze Amy Rose? If so, you repulse us, and we think everybody would be more comfortable if you'd <em>just leave</em>. Seriously, there's a back door, just slip out. No, no you can't say goodbye to everyone, just get out.<br /><br />But before you go we also have good news for you! There's a demo for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Sega%20Superstars%20Tennis">Sega Superstars Tennis</a> </em>on Xbox Live, so you can fulfill your primal, forbidden urges gratis. ... But you probably need to pay to watch it, don't you? Otherwise it's just not <em>wrong</em> enough. We just threw up in our mouths a bit, thanks so much for that.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/">Sega Superstars Tennis</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445483"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445482"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445481"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445479"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/sega-superstars-tennis-gets-xbox-live-demo/">Sega Superstars Tennis gets Xbox Live demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 03:00:00 EST. Ah, there's nothing like the smell of a fresh demo on a Friday morning. Today's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xblm/">Marketplace</a> offering is none other than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega-superstars-tennis"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em>.</a> The demo offers single player and local versus multiplayer. The game brings together plenty of Sega "superstars" (Amigo? A superstar? Really?) for some friendly tennis action and tennis based mini-games. Taking a cue from Nintendo, the game focuses infuses typical tennis mechanics with fantasy court settings and the ability to enter Superstar Mode, which grants special powers to each character. The demo doesn't last very long, but new features are unlocked through successive play-throughs, so give it a shot.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/sega-superstars-tennis-demo/">Sega Superstars Tennis demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Apr 2008 11:00:00 EST. Though, the demo may be end up being restricted to North American Live subscribers seeing that such restrictions have been implemented on the PSN Store where the demo has already been released. SEGA also felt the need to rub some salt in our scabbed over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/condemned-2-demo-still-not-available-still-coming/"><em>Bloodshot </em>demo sore</a> by mentioned that the <em>Condemned 2: Bloodshot</em> demo should be making an XBLM release soon'ish as well. To date, the <em>Bloodshot </em>demo has been "coming soon" for over two weeks. Many of you are likely <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/wii-releases-for-the-week-of-march-17th/">eyeing up Sega's <em>Superstar Tennis</em></a> as a means of primary enjoyment with your Wii this weekend. From the early reviews, it looks like the character roster is the best thing the handheld has going for it, though there are some solid gameplay mechanics buried beneath the fanservice. <br /><br /><a href="http://ds.ign.com/articles/860/860593p1.html"><strong>IGN: 69%</strong></a> -- Solid, but too easy. "If you replaced the traditional tennis courts with ones taking place in such SEGA universes as Sonic the Hedgehog's Green Hill Zone, the Nights dreamworld Nightopia, and <em>House of the Dead's</em> Curian Mansion, and then replace the professional athletes with Sonic and Tails from <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>, AiAi from <em>Super Monkey Ball</em>, Beat from <em>Jet Grind Radio</em>, and Ulala from <em>Space Channel 5</em>, you'd get SEGA Superstars Tennis. And that's exactly what Sumo, the developer of Virtua Tennis, has done for SEGA ... But compared to other tennis games, it feels more automatic than it should be."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamepro.com/nintendo/ds/games/reviews/170208.shtml"><strong>GamePro: 45%</strong></a> -- This is on the DS why? "The final thing to keep in mind when avoiding <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> for DS is that the game looks better on consoles. Also, the play style isn't really suited to handhelds, since there doesn't appear to be a way to save your progress in a tournament. While the character roster has potential, the tennis here is just too gimmicky and frustrating to recommend."<br /><br /><strong><em>Nintendo Power</em>: 80%</strong> -- The Nintendo magazine found themselves immersed in a solid experience -- for both tennis and Sega fans. "The default button-based control scheme is less forgiving than that of the <em>Mario</em> titles, calling for more precision and tighter timing -- either a welcome challenge or a minor frustration, depending on how much you mind AiAi acing one past you ... Control issues aside, <em>Sega Superstar Tennis</em> is swimming in clever game references and should be fun for even a casual Sega fan."<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/metareview-sega-superstars-tennis/">Metareview: Sega Superstars Tennis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 12:00:00 EST. Brawl</em> -- if it were, we wouldn't see Sonic in Nintendo's game. <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> is a smaller release, meant, we would guess, to bridge the gap between "casual gamers" and Sega superfans. Or, to be more cynical, to be a <em>Virtua Tennis</em> sequel without the likeness rights. Did Sega and Sumo Digital serve up an ace or a fault? Or is the game best analogized by some other tennis term? The reviews seem to range from the ecstatic to the nonplussed. <div align="left">It's sort of a lonely week for new releases. It's not that we aren't seeing anything worthwhile, though. Nope, this week we have the much awaited sequel to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rainbow-six-vegas-2"><em>Rainbow Six Vegas</em></a>, sagely titled <em>Rainbow Six Vegas 2</em> to in order to nullify any confusion. Remember, this is the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/08/rainbow-six-wont-see-vegas-again/">last time</a> you'll be getting your <em>6</em> on in Vegas, so get it while the gettin's good (alternately, you could wait until it goes down in price and get it while the gettin's better). Also releasing this week is the latest curiosity from Sega, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega-superstars-tennis"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a>. Alas, it seems Sega has more trouble wedging its beloved characters into the sports genre than Nintendo does, as the game has thus far received only <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/segasuperstarstennis?q=sega%20superstars%20tennis">fair to middling reviews</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/new-games-this-week-rainbow-six-vegas-2-edition/">Joystiq</a>]<br /></div>

As huge fans of Nintendo, we often find ourselves being their harshest critics. One of the problems we've always had with the company was its lack of devotion to a competitive online arena, where gamers could do comparable things online with their Wii that the Xbox 360 and PS3 can do.<br /><br />Why do we bring all of this up? Well, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game <em>will</em> have the online play and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/fault-sega-superstars-tennis-to-lack-online-play/">it's missing from Nintendo platforms</a> because of "time and development resource constraints." We just wonder what kind of constraints would allow them to include it into the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions and not in the Wii version? Hey, we're willing to wait a little longer so long as what we're getting is a <em>complete product</em> and not the table scraps left from the other versions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/ulala-packing-tricks-in-sega-superstars-tennis/"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a>. Sure, we get the best control method (presumably), but is it worth it?<br /><br />Regardless, we're still excited for the game. We just wish we could enjoy the game <em>with you</em>.<br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=37785">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/no-online-in-sega-superstar-tennis-wii-because-of-time-constrai/">No online in Sega Superstar Tennis Wii because of 'time constraints'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST. <br />Sega just served up more footage of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/30/sega-superstars-tennis-piles-on-the-jet-set-radio-references/"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a>, and all the ingredients are in place for one of the most quintessentially <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a> experiences in years: cartoon monkeys called Amigo, blue skies, Ulala, and Sonic's <em>horrible voice</em>. Playing tennis to a rousing rendition of Samba de Janeiro, even in videogame form, feels a bit weird, but we strongly suspect we won't care!<br /><br />Past the break: footage of Ulala playing on home territory. The resolution of the video isn't the best, but we're sure she plays a shot through her legs, a la Martina Navratilova!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/ulala-packing-tricks-in-sega-superstars-tennis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ulala packing tricks in Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/ulala-packing-tricks-in-sega-superstars-tennis/">Ulala packing tricks in Sega Superstars Tennis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST. It looks like Sega's new tennis title will come packed with various mini-games. The two latest videos show off both a ring collecting <span style="font-style: italic;">Sonic</span> mini-game and a another -- the objective of which we can't quite discern -- based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChuChu_Rocket%21"><span style="font-style: italic;">ChuChu Rocket</span></a>. The games look entertaining enough, but let's just hope the tennis is up to snuff. After all, mini-games are mini for a reason. Having said that, we pray that there's a <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Channel 5</span> dancing mini-game with "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sjgdoN9ew8">Space Michael</a>."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/video-sega-superstars-tennis-mini-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: Sega Superstars Tennis mini-games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/video-sega-superstars-tennis-mini-games/">Video: Sega Superstars Tennis mini-games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Mar 2008 15:30:00 EST. <br />We haven't seen much <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samba-de-amigo"><em>Samba de Amigo</em></a> related media for Sega's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega-superstars-tennis/">upcoming tennis game</a>, aside from a handful of screenshots. Fortunately, the <em>Samba</em> stage looks to be pretty great, if we do say so ourselves. The above trailer may be super short, but the stage seems to have all the elements of "awesome," like a cheetah band, good music, and bra-wearing cacti. It's nice to see some fun characters make a return from the original Dreamcast game -- we're sure our favorite maraca-playing monkey would be lonely without them.<br /><br />After the break, you can also check out the intro trailer for the Sonic's Green Hill Zone court.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/sega-superstars-tennis-de-amigo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega Superstars Tennis de amigo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/sega-superstars-tennis-de-amigo/">Sega Superstars Tennis de amigo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 20:00:00 EST. Europe might not be able to <em>Brawl</em> with Sonic in March, but they can make the speedy blue hedgehog pick up a tennis racquet in <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em>. Originally dated for March 28th, Eurogamer reports that the game won't take as long to hit European shores as we originally thought. <br /><br />While the game's release was only bumped up eight days to March 20th, Europeans can rest assured that they're getting it only two days after us folks in America (compared to the usual gap, that's not so bad). <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/jc-fletcher">Some</a> of the staff at Nintendo Wii Fanboy are super hyped about this game for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/20/we-just-bought-sega-superstars-tennis-with-our-minds/">Jet Set Radio references</a> alone, so we hope those of you in Europe who feel the same way enjoy these good tidings. Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/some-more-baseball-for-the-wii-with-mlb-2k8/">once again</a> you'll be forced to choose between motion controls and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/fault-sega-superstars-tennis-to-lack-online-play/">online play</a>.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/01/european-wait-for-sega-superstars-tennis-gets-a-little-shorter/">European wait for Sega Superstars Tennis gets a little shorter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 01 Mar 2008 12:00:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/friday-video-whats-better-than-sega-superstars-tennis/"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a>' joyful habit of meshing together franchises such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/30/sega-superstars-tennis-piles-on-the-jet-set-radio-references/"><em>Jet Set Radio</em></a>, <em>Samba de Amigo</em>, <em>Space Channel 5</em>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/yessss-sega-superstars-tennis-has-an-outrun-stage/"><em>OutRun</em></a> has already left us smitten with the game, even though it's <em>just</em> <em>tennis</em>.<br /><br />Indeed, our extreme fondness for the title meant it only hurt more to hear that this celebration of Sega awesomeness would <em>not</em> have online play in the Wii version. The sad news was casually revealed in an IGN preview of the title, though we had our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/sega-serves-superstars-tennis-to-the-wii/">suspicions</a> back when the game was announced. We'd gladly exchange the one noteworthy perk of the Wii version -- multiple control schemes -- for a chance to face down fellow <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/sega-superstars-tennis-boxart-misses-a-beat/">Beat</a> fans from other continents.<br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=35247">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/09/fault-sega-superstars-tennis-to-lack-online-play/">Fault! We know that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/30/sega-superstars-tennis-piles-on-the-jet-set-radio-references/"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a> is a tennis game with a bunch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/rumor-an-exiled-mascot-returns-to-sega-superstars-tennis/">Sega folks</a> in it, but until now we haven't known much else. How would the Wii controls work? What kind of special powers can each character use? CVG sat down with Sumo Digital to discuss the Wii version and get some specifics.<br /><br />First, and most important for distinguishing between the Wii and other versions, the controls. <em>SST</em> will in fact use a motion-based control setup. As Sumo describes it: "<span class="text_article_body">We take the Wii remote's speed and direction and use this to determine the shot you get. But of course, as with real tennis, the better your timing, the better the shot you'll do.</span>" With somewhat direct translation between movement and in-game response, this sounds much more <em>Wii Sports</em> and less <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/24/no-surprise-online-not-included-in-table-tennis/">Rockstar Table Tennis</a>.<br /><br /></em>The developers also revealed some of the minigame options, which are unsurprisingly based on Sega classics, and can be played single- or multiplayer. They described a <em>Space Harrier</em> game in which the player hits tennis balls at the arcade game's enemies, and a <em>Puyo Puyo</em> game involving a wall of Puyos that must be cleared with tennis balls. In addition, new screenshots (in our gallery) reveal a <em>House of the Dead</em> zombie-killing minigame, and <em>Sonic, Chu Chu Rocket, Super Monkey Ball</em> and <em>Jet Set Radio</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/minigames/">minigames</a> that we don't quite understand. The screens don't depict the Wii version, but they illustrate new gameplay elements and that is <em>important.</em><br /><br />Finally, a couple of new characters were revealed, with an indication that some were still being kept under wraps. In addition to the ones we've seen, Shadow the Hedgehog, Reala from <em>NiGHTS</em>, and Gum from <em>Jet Set Radio</em> will be playable.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/sega-superstars-tennis-controls-minigames-and-awesomeness/">Sega Superstars Tennis: controls, minigames, and awesomeness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. If, like us, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/friday-video-whats-better-than-sega-superstars-tennis/"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a> has driven you into a tennis frenzy (a "tenzy"), you will be very happy to gawk at these new screenshots. If you're not into tennis, but <em>all about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a></em> (which we were until Sega <em>convinced us fully</em>) you can enjoy picking out characters in the background of the <em>Jet Set Radio </em>stage.<br /><br />In this screenshot, there's an obvious police contingent surrounding the stage, leading us to wonder if they're there to spectate or if Captain Onishima will be arresting us for playing tennis. And on the right side: Jet Set Radio one-punch knockout broadcaster <a href="http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/jetsetradio/jsr-6.jpg">Professor K</a>! In another screenshot, you can see the jumpsuited GG, Tab. We love you, <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em>, for looking like <em>Jet Set Radio</em> sometimes. We can't imagine that Sega would be withholding Alex from these screens for some kind of big reveal, unless ... oh, no. They're relaunching the character! <br /><br />It's more likely that they just <em>forgot</em> about Alex Kidd and neglected to include him in the screens. Luckily, we can distract ourselves from the paucity of Kidds with new screens and character art of the other players. Look, Beat looks kind of cel-shaded as a result of his low-polygon model!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/sega-superstars-tennis-continues-to-be-awesome-despite-apparent/">Sega Superstars Tennis continues to be awesome despite apparent lack of Alex Kidd</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 17:00:00 EST. Tetsuya Mizuguchi, that's who. Some of his games would work beautifully on Nintendo's console. We can <em>totally </em>picture ourselves playing through a motion-based <em>Space Channel 5</em>, or using the Wii Remote to point and shoot in <em>Rez</em>.<br /><br />Wii owners who also happen to be Mizuguchi fans shouldn't get their hopes up, though. Mizuguchi seems keen enough on the Wii itself, but confessed in an interview with Wired that he was a "little bit worried" about the strength of Nintendo games. We presume this is a reference to an increasingly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/24/third-party-publishers-are-wary-of-the-wii/">common</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/here-we-go-again-nintendos-success-is-bad-for-the-industry/">complaint</a> from publishers and other industry folk that Nintendo's first-party titles are hogging sales.<br /><br />Looks like an Ulala appearance in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/friday-video-whats-better-than-sega-superstars-tennis/"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a> could be the closest we get to grooving with <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZQBqx-H_qA">Space Michael</a>. Come on, Sega. We're doing our very best to <em>love</em> your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/friday-video-whats-better-than-sega-superstars-tennis/">new mascot tennis game</a>, and for the most part it's been quite easy. Putting wonderful <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a> characters into a wonderful Sega tennis game (<em>Virtua Tennis</em>) is exactly what we'd ask for if we were asked, and if we were clever enough to think of it. <em>Virtua Tennis</em> is excellent enough when it's all boring humans, and can only be made better with space reporters and two different varieties of cartoon monkey.<br /><br />But the European boxart for <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> dampens even our enthusiasm somewhat. We understand the reasoning (he's very popular) but we still would have chosen not to put <em>that hedgehog</em> front and center. But in their zeal to sell this to Everybody, Sega has failed to emphasize the most amazing thing about the game: the wide variety of Seganess found within. And in so doing, they've given a bland box to what looks like an extraordinarily jubilant game.<br /><br />Some other characters are indeed on the box (in the area not taken up by Sonic), but where's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/20/we-just-bought-sega-superstars-tennis-with-our-minds/">Beat</a>? Where's NiGHTS? Where's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/rumor-an-exiled-mascot-returns-to-sega-superstars-tennis/">Alex Kidd</a> (who we have yet to see)? Where are the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/yessss-sega-superstars-tennis-has-an-outrun-stage/">wacky Sega backdrops</a>? With the Sonic-themed stage (which looks the most like a normal, boring tennis court of any of them) and the centered Sonic, somebody could walk by and mistake this for a <em>Sonic Tennis</em>, which nobody wants.<br /><br />[Via GamesPress]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/sega-superstars-tennis-boxart-misses-a-beat/">Sega Superstars Tennis boxart misses a Beat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 14:15:00 EST. This happy, fun trailer instantly "made" our Sunday.<br /><br />The debut trailer doesn't show one lick of actual gameplay, but does give us other informative niblets all while being an entertaining tennis spectacle. The trailer does confirm that SEGA characters Aiai (<em>Super Monkey Ball</em>), Beat (<em>Jet Set Radio),</em> Ulala (<em>Space Channel 5</em>)<em>,</em> Amigo (<em>Samba de Amigo</em>), Nights (<em>Nights</em>), Dr. Eggman (<em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>) and our blue Sonic the Hedgehog to be included in <em>Superstars Tennis</em>. We also suspect other "mystery" characters to be included or unlockable, because that's usually how these games go. So, enjoy the <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> debut trailer and be sure to watch for Amigo's introduction. His stone, expressionless face creeped us out, but the sound of his maracas made us smile for some reason.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/20/video-sega-superstars-tennis-makes-its-debut/">Video: Sega Superstars Tennis makes its debut!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 20 Jan 2008 15:00:00 EST. <br />Oh. Em. Gee. Okay, that Start sign looks <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/01/oh_god_its_just_beautiful.jpg"><em>awfully familiar</em></a>. And those "left turn" signs? The palm trees? Yep, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/01/segatennis_021.jpg">closer look</a> confirms it: <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> will have <em>an OutRun stage</em>, hopefully with majestic red Ferraris roaring past as you play.<br /><br />For veteran Sega fans such as ourselves, this kind of fan service is <span style="font-style: italic;">irresistible</span>. First the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/20/we-just-bought-sega-superstars-tennis-with-our-minds/">Shibuya bus terminal</a>, and now this. The only possible downer? Due to its high resolution, we suspect this screenshot is from the <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com">Xbox 360</a> or <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com">PS3</a> versions of the game. That's not to say we <em>won't</em> get an OutRun stage in the Wii version, but please understand, Sega: <span style="font-style: italic;">we need this</span>.<br /><br />Hit the break for a couple more shots of the court.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/yessss-sega-superstars-tennis-has-an-outrun-stage/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Yessss! Those clicky things on either side of the touchscreen? New screenshots of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/03/sega-superstars-tennis-is-a-love-note-from-sega-to-itself/"><em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em></a> show the view on the bottom screen, which contains nothing more than a scoreboard. There are no icons to tap, no moves to select, and definitely no predefined areas to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/mario-and-sonic-at-the-rubbing-olympics/">rub</a>. </em>Just character portraits (of what we assume are the player-controlled characters in each team, in the case of doubles) and scores. You're certainly not controlling the players directly via dragging them around, because they're up on the top screen.<br /><em><br /></em>Of course, stylus controls could still turn up. This display <em>could</em> be temporary, to be replaced when developer Sumo Digital figures out the user interface for the touch controls. Or it could be what displays if you <em>choose</em> a traditional control scheme. <br /><br />Check our new gallery featuring screens of the most exciting multiplatform handheld mascot tennis game ever to have a version made for the DS. <em>Ever.</em><br /><br />
<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/sega-superstars-tennis-seems-to-use-buttons/">Sega Superstars Tennis seems to use buttons</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Jan 2008 10:30:00 EST. Well, it turns out that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/ace-channel-5-sega-announces-superstars-tennis/">DS version</a> <em>also</em> features Beat as a playable character, along with a Shibuya Bus Terminal-located tennis court. <em>Jet Set Radio</em> is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and so is anything that reminds us of it. Even in an <em>extremely</em> graphically impaired DS version, it is beautiful and joyous and fills us with love for video games.<br /><br />This is the first time we've seen a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Channel_5"><em>Space Channel 5</em></a> stage in any iteration of <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em>, and while it's not as visually exciting in screens as Shibuya-cho, we assume it'll be vibrant and colorful in motion, pulsing in time to the game's signature music. We're so glad to see Sega bringing back some of their Dreamcast-era classics. It was an excellent time for Sega (creatively).<br /><br />If Sega wants to continue trading on our memories of when they were great, they are welcome to do so. We are willing to be exploited in this manner.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/03/sega-superstars-tennis-is-a-love-note-from-sega-to-itself/">Sega Superstars Tennis is a love note from Sega to itself</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 10:30:00 EST. IGN posted an interview with Sumo Digital's Omar Woodley which <em>finally</em> reveals some details about the Wii-specific version of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/sega-serves-superstars-tennis-to-the-wii/">Sega Superstars Tennis</a>. </em>If you want to hear about the different control options and the screen resolution and stuff, we suggest you click over to the link and check that out, because we can't focus on that right now in the post.<br /><br />Because we saw a <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_Set_Radio">Jet Set Radio</a> </em>stage. And we <em>also</em> saw Beat as one of the playable characters. <em>Look at that, it's the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Of11Ne-ZA0">Shibuya bus terminal</a> and it looks just like in the game and oh man we're hyperventilating and this is awesome SEGA IS AWESOME AND SO IS LIFE. </em>As of right now, we're kicking off a Matt C.-<em>Zack-and-Wiki-style</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/ign-conducting-the-zack-and-wiki-hype-train/">campaign</a> to promote this game -- except it's not enough for you to buy just one copy. Buy one copy for <em>every system</em>, even if you don't have that system. Buy it for your friends, buy it for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/20/best-of-2007-games-that-remind-me-of-your-mother/">your mom</a>, and buy it for your dog. It is very important that Sega knows that they need to be spending their time filling our lives with <em>more Jet Set Radio</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/20/we-just-bought-sega-superstars-tennis-with-our-minds/">We just bought Sega Superstars Tennis with our minds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 19:00:00 EST. While competing together at this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/joystiq-hands-on-mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games-wii-ds/">Olympics</a>, it seems some excellent business advice passed from Mario to Sonic, the end result manifesting in the <a href="http://www.sega-europe.com/en/NewsStory/1724.htm">newly announced</a> <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em>. It's-a <em>Mario Tennis</em>, but with-a Sonic! Mario's sales <strike>pitch</strike> serve must have left quite the impression, as Sega is quite confident of its huge stable of "cherished" characters ready to wield racquets in an anthropomorphic Wimbledon. <br /><br />Set for release in early 2008 on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Wii and DS, <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> promises over 15 playable Sega idols (it says here) with the famous hedgehog joined by two monkeys (one <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sambadeamigo">rockin'</a> and one <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermonkeyball">rollin'</a>) and roving space reporter, Ulala. The remainder of the roster has yet to be announced, a clever move that is sure to guarantee at least 15 minutes of fervent internet speculation. Just don't count on Ecco the Dolphin's appearance -- having him flop about on a tennis court as he suffers the most excruciating death in the blistering sun would probably be frowned upon by the ESRB. And PETA.<br /><br />Curiously, the press release hints at "new and innovative ways of enjoying some of SEGA's classic titles" and, less curiously, confirms online support for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. Expect to learn more once developer Sumo Digital figures out how to lure Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki onto the court. (Obvious answer: Putting Vyse from <em>Skies of Arcadia</em> on the other side of the net. He is a sailor, after all.)<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/">Sega Superstars Tennis</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445483"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445482"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445481"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445480"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-superstars-tennis/#445479"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/sst-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/sega-superstars-tennis-served-up-in-2008/">Sega Superstars Tennis served up in 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 14:55:00 EST. <div align="left">Hey, Sonic's already appearing in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/17/ds-daily-mario-and-sonic-and-ds/">another sports game</a>! Sega announced today that they're making a new tennis game for <em>just about</em> every system, called <em>Sega Superstars Tennis.</em> The concept is simple enough, and is pretty much contained in the title: Sega characters playing tennis. Already confirmed as part of the cast of "over 15" characters are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sonic/">Sonic</a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/13/monkey-ball-producer-on-ds-design-challenges/">Super Monkey Ball</a>'s </em>AiAi, <em>Space Channel 5'</em>s Ulala, and Amigo from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/24/nintendo-power-confirms-samba-de-amigo/">Samba De Amigo</a>. </em>They'll be playing on courts inspired by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a> games, like the <em>Samba</em> court found above.<br /><br />Obviously that's not a DS screenshot, but it gives you an idea of what the game's about. We may balk at Sonic games, but we are <em>ravenous</em> for Sega mascot games like this one. The game became an insta-buy for us as soon as we saw <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulala">Ulala</a>; unfortunately, there are <em>way</em> more than 15 characters we'd like to see in this game, and at least one more slot will probably be taken up by Tails or Shadow or some other <em>Sonic</em> friend. <br />Out of nowhere, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a> announced today that it will be working with developer Sumo Digital on a new sports title, <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em>, for a wide range of platforms, including the DS and Wii. As you've probably surmised from the game's title, <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> will feature a celeb-filled cast picked from Sega's stable of classics. Already, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sonic/">Sonic</a>, AiAi (<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=monkey+ball&amp;searchsubmit=">Super Monkey Ball</a></em>), Ulala (<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/18/mizuguchi-doesnt-say-much-about-wii-space-channel-5/">Space Channel 5</a></em>), and Amigo (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sambadeamigo"><em>Samba de Amigo</em></a>) have been confirmed as four of the fifteen playable characters.<br /><br />Before you break out the party hats to celebrate this Sega-themed adaptation of <em>Mario Tennis</em>, it's worth noting that while online modes are planned for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases, nothing of the sort has been indicated for the Wii version. Some might feel it's a negligible issue, but being the pessimists we are, we take it as pointing to a lack of dedication towards the Wii variant. <br /><br />Though we can't say for certain whether the screenshots released so far are representative of what <em>Sega Superstars Tennis'</em> graphics will look like on the Wii (they could be grabbed from the 360/PS3 versions), you can still get a pretty good idea of what to expect from the game with the images posted after the break. Expect to see <em>Sega Superstars Tennis</em> early 2008.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/sega-serves-superstars-tennis-to-the-wii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega serves Superstars Tennis to the Wii</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/sega-serves-superstars-tennis-to-the-wii/">Sega serves Superstars Tennis to the Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 12:45:00 EST.
