The guys behind <a href="http://loadingreadyrun.com/">LoadingReadyRun</a> have a very unique way of contributing to this year's Child's Play charity: they're <a href="http://desertbus.org/">playing one of the worst games of all time</a>.<br /><br /><em>Desert Bus</em> is one of several mini-games included in the never-officially-released Sega CD game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/03/penn-and-teller-segacd-game-unearthed/"><em>Penn and Teller's Smoke and Mirrors</em></a>. The <em>Desert Bus</em> mini-game challenges players to drive Penn and Teller's tour bus from Tuscon, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada... in real time... and at a maximum speed of 45 mph.<br /><br />It's a task that takes 8 hours to complete, and earns players one point in the game. The task can be completed back and forth as many times as the players can stomach, each time earning one point. The LoadingReadyRun team has pledged that the more money they receive, the longer they will sit and endure this painful, painful game. Over $1,000 USD have already been donated, which guarantees the masochists at least <strong>64 hours of play-time</strong>. To see just how crazy they are, check out the gameplay footage after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks, Graham]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/selfless-crazies-play-desert-bus-for-charity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Selfless crazies play Desert Bus for charity</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/selfless-crazies-play-desert-bus-for-charity/">Selfless crazies play Desert Bus for charity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 21:01:00 EST. With this week's controversy over <span style="font-style: italic;">Manhunt 2</span>, our colleagues over at <a href="http://gaygamer.net/2007/06/night_trap_week_night_4.html">GayGamer</a> decided to delve into the history of controversial games, and they've dubbed this <span style="font-style: italic;">Night Trap</span> week. <span style="font-style: italic;">Night Trap</span> was an FMV-based game starring <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_Plato">Dana Plato</a> that is infamous for its overacting and horrible scenes. No, wait ... that's just our opinion now. At the time, <span style="font-style: italic;">Night Trap</span> was considered sexist, ultra-violent, and downright <em>shameful</em>. My, how far we've come. <em>Night Trap</em> seems far less horrific than the slasher films we grew up watching, and these days, this sort of "violence" would be considered laughable in games. Check out this little slice of history after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/friday-video-passion-burns-and-danger-calls/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Friday Video: Passion burns and danger calls</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/friday-video-passion-burns-and-danger-calls/">Friday Video: Passion burns and danger calls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Jun 2007 19:30:00 EST. As suspected, "S" is for "<a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snatcher"><em>Snatcher</em></a>," Kojima's 1988 cyberpunk adventure, which was eventually translated and released for Sega CD in 1994. During this past weekend's '<a target="_blank" href="http://xbox360.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/mizuguchi-working-on-al-gore-environmentalism-project/">Snake vs Zombie Vol. 2</a>' event, Suda confessed that <em>Snatcher</em> was his favorite Kojima effort, prompting a few snickers between the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nomoreheroes"><em>No More Heroes</em></a> creator and Kojima, who joined Suda on stage. While the pair alluded to Project S's presumed connection to <em>Snatcher</em>, it wasn't until this week's article that the link was openly confirmed.<br /><br />Project S is apparently a series of works based on the <em>Snatcher</em> property. The first, a radio drama (yeah, you read that right, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_drama" target="_blank"><em>radio drama</em></a>), will be written by Suda 51, who will also star as one of the voice actors. "I think I will call it '<em>Snatchers</em>.' I can't talk about the details of the story at this point," he told <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/famitsu"><em>Famitsu</em></a>. Any chance it'll make it to satellite?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/suda-51-and-kojimas-project-s-based-on-snatcher-radio-drama-an/">Suda 51 &amp; Kojima's 'Project S' based on Snatcher, radio drama announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 12:28:00 EST. Sure, everyone's got their own wishlist, but they're not online, and they don't all include <em>Snatcher </em>and <em>Policenauts. </em>And we want more <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/virtually-overlooked-snatcher/">opportunities</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/virtually-overlooked-sd-snatcher/">talk</a> about those two games. <br /><br />He's absolutely right that these games are a good fit for the DS: between <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hoteldusk"><em>Hotel Dusk</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phoenix">Phoenix Wright</a> </em>and stuff like Suda 51's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/11/gdc07-classic-suda-51-weirdness-hitting-the-ds/"><em>The Silver Case</em></a>, the DS is pretty much the only system that can be said to be experiencing a graphical-text-adventure boom. It also happens to be the current sales leader. If there were ever a time to shovel all your old adventure games onto a console, this is it.<br /><br /><em>Snatcher</em> and <em>Policenauts</em> are high-quality games that would both sell to and satisfy the <em>Phoenix Wright </em>crowd. Throw a "FROM HIDEO KOJIMA, PRODUCER OF METAL GEAR" sticker on the box and you've got a game that is guaranteed to sell. Here's our totally unsolicited advice for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/konami">Konami</a>: port <em>Snatcher </em>first, and then if that sells, put some of the profits into translating <em>Policenauts.</em><br /><br />Other notable games on the list include <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroid">Metroid</a>s </em>(yay) and <em>Pac-Man Vs.</em> We can get behind that, since with Wi-Fi play, we'd actually get to <em>try Pac-Man Vs. against another person for once.</em> Unfortunately, we kind of think that Nintendo is loath to embarrass themselves further by referring back to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gba">GBA</a>/<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamecube">GC </a>connectivity experiment. But more <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/adventure">adventure</a> games? That's an easy call.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/03/ds-wishlist-is-an-excuse-to-talk-about-snatcher/">DS wishlist is an excuse to talk about Snatcher</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Apr 2007 15:00:00 EST. Call it a <em>retro-speculative.</em><br /><br />This week, we'd like to talk about <em>Snatcher,</em> a Sega CD game from Konami released in the US in 1994. The game was also released in Japan for the MSX2, PC8801, PC Engine CD-Rom, Playstation, and Saturn.<br /><br /><strong>Why the game hasn't been announced for Virtual Console yet</strong>: Not too long ago, the obvious answer to this question would have been "because it is a graphical text adventure." Luckily, however, the DS has changed that, bringing an era where <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phoenixwright">graphical</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/24/metareview-hotel-dusk-room-215/">text</a> adventures are the subjects of rabid fandom. What hasn't changed is that <em>Snatcher</em> is a Sega CD game, and Nintendo has made no announcements regarding support for CD systems. The size of the files may be prohibitive, although it would be possible to save space by compressing the sound and music.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/virtually-overlooked-snatcher/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: Snatcher [update 1]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/virtually-overlooked-snatcher/">Virtually Overlooked: Snatcher [update 1]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 12:45:00 EST. <p>Thanks to Joystiq reader CrankSling for sending in this bit of retro goodness -- a Sega Genesis converted into a precarious teetering tower of plastic and silicon by a series of ill-advised add-ons. We can't imagine what would possess someone to actually construct this mostrosity except a deep desire to make a Genesis look like a vacuum cleaner. Anyone out there have a more ridiculously decked out system? Send in a picture and achieve internet immortality (for, like, 15 seconds).</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/23/the-leaning-tower-of-sega/">The leaning tower of Sega</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Jan 2007 12:25:00 EST. It should come as no surprise that more than one of their selections was created by console hacker-extraordinaire <a href="http://www.benheck.com/">Ben Heckendorn</a>. In addition to variants of popular consoles like the NES and Genesis, the list includes portable versions of famous flops like Atari's Jaguar, and Sega's Genesis add-on, the SegaCD. We're hoping these aren't ranked in order 'cause that portable Colecovision totally houses that NESPlusSega monolith!<br /><br />[Via VH1's new game blog, <a href="http://vh1.blogs.com/vh1_games//2006/06/custom_console_.html">Game Break</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/06/top-10-custom-built-consoles/">Top 10 custom-built consoles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Jun 2006 01:00:00 EST.
