The game debuted at 31 on the UK charts and sold a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/15/zelda-sold-well-in-june-child-of-eden-and-shadows-of-the-damned/">measly 24,000 units in its first month in the States</a>. This sojourn in hell inspires the most intense evangelism, and that makes me think nobody in EA's marketing department bothered to play <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Even those who acted as envoys for the game's off-kilter charms, those people who were unpaid but still rewarded, might have gotten stuck on the easy marquee description: "It's the unfathomable oddness of Suda 51, paired with Shinji Mikami sensibility and an Akira Yamaoka soundtrack!"<br />
<br />
The summation is accurate (if a bit unfair to the major input from design lead <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/19/shadows-of-the-damned-director-guarini-leaves-grasshopper-forms/">Massimo Guarini</a>, who left Grasshopper Manufacture in 2011), but hardly a detailed message for those unfamiliar with star Japanese designers. At least <em>Shadows of the Damned</em> had no troubles conveying its obvious qualities: a surprising and properly grotesque vision of post-life limbo, a protagonist passionate to a fault and a hilarious skull-on-a-stick to guide him.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/02/joystiq-top-10-of-2011-shadows-of-the-damned/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq Top 10 of 2011: Shadows of the Damned</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/02/joystiq-top-10-of-2011-shadows-of-the-damned/">Joystiq Top 10 of 2011: Shadows of the Damned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Jan 2012 11:00:00 EST. It takes a lot of people a lot of time to license a track for a video game. Among other things, that's what The Damned drummer Andrew "Pinch" Pinching learned in the fall of 2010 when he worked with Grasshopper Manufacture composer Akira Yamaoka on the title track from this year's grindhouse-inspired third-person shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>. According to Pinch, it took "about a hundred emails" before an agreement was even reached regarding the collaboration.<br />
<br />
"I kid you not, they are VERY thorough," Pinch explained to me via email earlier this summer. He was speaking to the GhM side of the partnership, which he described as "treading a different path in the games industry" from other dev studios. "I did a bit of research and found out about Suda51 and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/no-more-heroes"><em>No More Heroes</em></a>," Pinch added. "[He] was regarded as a bit of an edgy rebel, which appealed to me immensely. It didn't hurt that his games looked great as well."<br />
<br />
The end product of the collaboration was, as we now know, the excellent (and if I may say so myself, <em>rockin</em>') final track from <em>Shadows of the Damned</em>. But that wasn't always the plan, as Pinch told me. "Initially, they [GhM] wanted what everyone wants -- an old Damned track. In this instance, a track called '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Song_(The_Damned_song)">Love Song</a>,' which in hindsight would have fitted the theme of the game rather nicely." But "Love Song" wasn't meant to be, and The Damned pushed to create an original track for the game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/05/the-damned-collaboration-how-shadows-of-the-damned-found-its-cl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Damned collaboration: How Shadows of the Damned found its closing act</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/05/the-damned-collaboration-how-shadows-of-the-damned-found-its-cl/">The Damned collaboration: How Shadows of the Damned found its closing act</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Sep 2011 16:30:00 EST. Grasshopper Manufacture announced the very welcome news that it will release a soundtrack CD containing Akira Yamaoka's full score on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/pre-order-shadows-of-the-damned-and-get-the-damned-soundtrack/">pre-order soundtrack</a> was nice, but incomplete; this disc will have all 21 tracks, including "Shadows of the Damned," performed with The Damned.<br />
<br />
In addition, GHM will release a guide book called "Kurayami Magazine," named after an earlier iteration of the game. It features a long interview with Suda 51 and original character designs.<br />
<br />
Both items are listed on the Japanese <a href="http://ghm-store.com/?pid=34477034">GHM store website</a>, with the soundtrack available tomorrow and the book on September 9. Neither has been posted on the <a href="http://ghm-store.net/index.php">American store</a> yet, and we're asking-<em>slash</em>-begging Grasshopper for more information.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> GHM is selling the soundtrack on its <a href="http://ghm-store.net/index.php?page=shop.product_details&amp;category_id=1&amp;flypage=flypage.tpl&amp;product_id=146&amp;option=com_virtuemart&amp;Itemid=27&amp;vmcchk=1&amp;Itemid=27">international site</a> now, limited to 1,000 copies. The first 300 will be signed by Akira Yamaoka!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/shadows-of-the-damned-soundtrack-coming-to-japan/">Shadows of the Damned soundtrack coming to Japan [update: available now internationally]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 01:00:00 EST. Grasshopper Manufacture's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> is set to infuse Japan with its Hot Boner this September. To help ensure that Japanese fans of grindhouse gore gravitate towards the product, it's enlisted some real-world celebrities to accompany the already extensive list of gaming celebrities attached to the title.<br />
<br />
Tadanobu Asano, best known for his role as Kakihara in <em>Ichi the Killer</em>, will be lending his pipes to <em>Shadows</em>' profanity-proficient protagonist Garcia. Chiaki Kuriyama of <em>Kill Bill: Vol 1</em> and <em>Battle Royale</em> fame will voice Garcia's kidnapped girlfriend, Paula, and Miyazaki veteran Tatsuya Gash&ucirc;in will give voice to Johnson, Garcia's <strike>phallic</strike> freudian friend/weapon. Man, you'd think this was a <em>Guitar Hero</em> post on account of all this <em>star power</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/high-profile-voice-actors-for-shadows-of-the-damned-in-japan/">High-profile voice actors for Shadows of the Damned in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 15:45:00 EST. Vatra Games design director Brian Gomez doesn't feel that his studio's upcoming survival-horror title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/silent-hill-downpour"><em>Silent Hill: Downpour</em></a>, is being too adversely affected by the absence of longtime series composer Akira Yamaoka. "I was worried when we lost him, we lost him really early on in <em>Downpour</em>. But I was a big fan of Dexter already, so I'm happy we got Daniel Licht," Gomez told me this morning after a GDC Europe panel on the <em>SH</em> franchise. "It was the closest to Akira but also brought something new to it," he added.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/01/rumor-silent-hill-composer-akira-yamaoka-leaves-konami/">Back in 2009</a>, <em>Downpour</em> producer (at Konami) Tomm Hulett told us, "If Akira's music isn't there, it just doesn't sound quite right. And I'm sure that there are people out there who could emulate the sound and try to get it close, but there would be something missing." But time heals all wounds, and Gomez thinks the game will still fall in line with the franchise's established standard of audio. "As much as I would've loved the honor of working with Akira, I don't feel that we're missing out by not having him."<br />
<br />
That said, it's clear that Gomez wants Yamaoka back at Konami, and back on the <em>Silent Hill</em> franchise. Speaking to the ongoing friction between Yamaoka and his formeremployer, Gomez added, "I think this whole feud between he and Konami is just fucking stupid. Everyone needs to calm down, and bring him back in, and do something."<br />
<br />

Though the marquee names associated with <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> were Suda 51, Shinji Mikami, and Akira Yamaoka, it was Massimo Guarini who actually directed the stylish shooter for Grasshopper Manufacture. He'll have a chance to amend that crediting oversight with his new studio, the just revealed Ovosonico Productions. Grasshopper confirmed to us that Guarini has left Suda 51's camp-heavy dev house.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6324502/shadows-of-the-damned-director-leaves-grasshopper">GameSpot</a> noticed the site and dug through its source code, which revealed the slogan "Games, Music, Films with an attitude" -- not exactly a surprise given Guarini's <a href="http://www.massimoguarini.com/category/works/">multi-disciplined media production past</a>. The main site also characterizes the company's work as "The sound of bold ideas," ambiguously hinting at its future.<br />
<br />
It's not exactly a huge surprise that Guarini left, given the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/15/zelda-sold-well-in-june-child-of-eden-and-shadows-of-the-damned/">depressingly low initial sales numbers</a> of the excellent <em>Shadows of the Damned</em>, but it is a surprise he's starting his own studio -- Guarini's worked for a variety of studios across the industry, originally getting his start at Ubisoft. It's currently unclear where Ovosonico is based, but we've followed up for more info.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/19/shadows-of-the-damned-director-guarini-leaves-grasshopper-forms/">Shadows of the Damned director Guarini leaves Grasshopper, forms Ovosonico</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jul 2011 20:40:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/akira-yamaoka">Akira Yamaoka</a>'s business card may identify him as Grasshopper Manufacture's "Chief Sound Officer," but the leather-bound composer's new job embodies more than just audio. During an interview at the 8-4 Play podcast, Yamaoka detailed his role.<br />
<br />
"At Grasshopper, I'm creating sound, but not only sound," he said. "I'm the leader of the development team, so I'm tag-teaming with Suda 51, and I'm actually involved with game creation as well as sound." He then went on to tease "a few titles we're going to announce soon, so stay tuned."<br />

Three major Japanese-developed games came out in North America in June: one of which performed really well, the other two ... not so much. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/the-legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D</em></a> showed up at #5 on the software top ten chart yesterday. Nintendo subsequently announced that it sold "more than 283,000 units," making it the second best-selling game on a single platform, right behind <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/infamous-2"><em>Infamous 2</em></a>. It's the first 3DS exclusive to chart on the top ten.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, two games weirder than <em>Zelda</em> attracted far more <em>exclusive</em> audiences. <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/child-of-eden">Child of Eden</a>,</em> the NPD told Joystiq, sold approximately 34,000 units in its debut month, ranking at number 83. At the same time, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> managed to sell 24,000 copies, combined, on PS3 and Xbox 360. <em>Damn</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/15/zelda-sold-well-in-june-child-of-eden-and-shadows-of-the-damned/">Zelda sold well in June, Child of Eden and Shadows of the Damned did not</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 10:45:00 EST. When you think of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>, your mind might linger on the music ... of Orlando-based metal band <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trivium_(band)">Trivium</a>. At least, that might be the case in Germany, where EA is engaging in an unlikely cross-promotion, giving away copies of Trivium's album "In Waves" on its website in a <a href="http://www.ea.com/de/news/shadows-of-the-damned-und-roadrunner-records-verlosen-das-brandneue-album-von-trivium">contest</a> tied in with <em>Shadow</em>s.<br />
<br />
In Japan, the <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/07/14/shadows_of_damned_bonuses/">promotions</a> aren't quite as random. There, <em>Shadows of the Damned</em> will come with a code to download the soundtrack (as offered in the US by Amazon), along with a "Playbox" magazine featuring cover art of Garcia's girlfriend Paula, and interviews with Suda, Shinji Mikami, and Akira Yamaoka.<br />
<br />
This isn't the first time Grasshopper Manufacture has mocked (and mocked-up) Playboy Magazine to promote one of its games; in 2007, it posted images of idols dressed as <em>No More Heroes' </em>Sylvia Christel and called the series "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/09/no-more-heroes-more-sylvias-on-the-way/">PLAYSYLVIA</a>."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/14/shadows-of-the-damned-promoted-internationally-with-playbox-ma/">Shadows of the Damned promoted internationally with 'Playbox' magazine, Trivium album</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 16:30:00 EST. Garcia Hotspur is passing through Japan in order to make a little money on his way to Hell, and he's got an unlikely guide: Sega. The Japanese publisher has taken on Japanese distribution duties for EA games, starting in August. The first title to be released under this agreement, as alluded earlier, is Grasshopper Manufacture's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>. It'll be out in Japan on September 22.<br />
<br />
EA and Sega are also planning to release <em>Battlefield 3 </em>and <em>FIFA</em> in Japan, according to an excerpt of the announcement posted at <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/news/201107/05046207.html">Famitsu</a>. EA has leaned on Japanese companies to boost its profile before; in 1998, EA and Square both opened <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_(company)#Square_Electronic_Arts">cooperative publishing operations</a> in the US and Japan, called Square Electronic Arts and Electronic Arts Square, respectively.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/05/sega-distributing-ea-games-in-japan-starting-with-shadows-of-th/">Sega distributing EA games in Japan, starting with Shadows of the Damned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 10:25:00 EST. It seems that 505 Games' <em>Zumba Fitness</em> motion game is destined to occupy every living room in the UK, as it was the UK's highest selling title last week -- even after 31 weeks of availability. Regaining a place in the top five, Rockstar's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/la-noire"><em>LA Noire</em></a> took second place, though it saw a 15 percent dip in sales.<br />
<br />
Here's where things get really depressing: Suda 51 and Shinji Mikami's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/21/shadows-of-the-damned-review/">excellent</a> <em>Shadows of the Damned</em> debuted on the charts at number 31, beaten not only by the likes of recently released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review-fail-to-the-king-baby/">stinkfest</a> <em>Duke Nukem Forever</em>, but even older titles like <em>Art Academy</em> and <em>EA Sports Active 2</em>. <em>FEAR 3</em> faced a starkly different reception, landing the number three spot just below LA Noire. We're not mad, UK readers and EA marketers -- just, ya know, <em>disappointed</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/27/zumba-fitness-stays-atop-uk-charts-for-fifth-week-la-noire-brin/">Zumba Fitness stays atop UK charts for fifth week, LA Noire brings up second place</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 08:45:00 EST. If you crave more footage of Garcia Hotspur shooting things and cursing in two languages -- but you have yet to receive your copy of<em> <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned">Shadows of the Damned</a></em> -- you might consider today's trailer an adequate stopgap. It's nonstop shooting and polyglot obscenity. There's even a dick joke!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/your-emergency-dose-of-shadows-of-the-damned/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Your emergency dose of Shadows of the Damned</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/your-emergency-dose-of-shadows-of-the-damned/">Your emergency dose of Shadows of the Damned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 22:30:00 EST. Of all the gags in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>, the biggest may be that it's rated "M for Mature." Believe me, the game is anything <em>but</em>. Over the course of its narrative, I wielded a weapon called the "Hot Boner," shoved any number of revolting things into a wailing infant's mouth and sprinted across a giant, mostly naked woman's body (including a breast roughly the size of a gazebo). And the dick jokes -- <em>so</em> many dick jokes.<br />
<br />
In short, <em>Shadows of the Damned</em> is insensitive, puerile, gross, incredibly profane and ... kind of wonderful.<br />

Another developer diary for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> is out, this time featuring Suda 51 and the game's composer, Akira Yamaoka. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/suda-and-mikami-get-silly-in-shadows-of-the-damned-dev-diary/">Once again</a>, rather than opt for boring translators, each creator is given a dramatic -- and goofy -- voice over. Appropriate, given the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/shadows-of-the-damned-preview-do-not-go-quietly-into-the-night/">over-the-top</a> presentation.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/17/shadows-of-the-damned-dev-diary-examines-the-sounds-of-hell/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shadows of the Damned dev diary examines the sounds of Hell</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/17/shadows-of-the-damned-dev-diary-examines-the-sounds-of-hell/">Shadows of the Damned dev diary examines the sounds of Hell</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Jun 2011 19:45:00 EST. Were we to face off against an ugly demon who erupted into a Hellish bird monster, we'd scream, run ... maybe pee. We are <em>not</em> Garcia Hotspur from <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>. Without flinching, he just calls the monster a <em>pendejo</em> and starts shooting. Check it out after the break.<br />

Last week, we got to spend some quality time with the first three acts of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>. Rather than force you to sift through a mound of <em>words</em>, we've compiled our impressions into one convenient video. Check it out after the break. Keep in mind that, by the nature of the game itself, it's mildly not safe for work.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/shadows-of-the-damned-preview-do-not-go-quietly-into-the-night/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shadows of the Damned preview: Do not go quietly into the night</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/shadows-of-the-damned-preview-do-not-go-quietly-into-the-night/">Shadows of the Damned preview: Do not go quietly into the night</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Jun 2011 07:55:00 EST. The latest screens from <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> include things we've come to expect (by which we mean <em>total horrors</em>) -- as well as something we didn't. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> trailer after the jump shows off the game's unique weapon upgrade system -- but unfortunately, it's titled "Enlarge Your Johnson." Warning: the latest screens from Grasshopper Manufacture's Hellacious shooter <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> feature some ... disturbing imagery. We see a hanging dead body, a giant tattooed monster about to get shot in his demonic beanbag, and -- is that a cage full of eyeballs? The guy seen here, who appears to have a head made of three skulls hacked together, is among the tamer images.<br />
<br />
And this is apparently just from acts 1 and 2.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-5-13-11/">Shadows of the Damned (5/13/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-5-13-11/#4133501"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/act-1fleming_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-5-13-11/#4133503"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/act-1garcia_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-5-13-11/#4133506"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/act-1garciapaula_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-5-13-11/#4133507"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/act2george-giant-image4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-5-13-11/#4133508"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/act2george-human-image2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/shadows-of-the-damned-screens-dont-do-much-for-hells-tourism/">Shadows of the Damned screens don't do much for Hell's tourism</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 May 2011 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> is, among other things, a delivery system for new Akira Yamaoka music. Pre-ordering the game, according to a new announcement, will get you the soundtrack, featuring some new Yamaoka tunes and English punk band <a href="http://www.officialdamned.com/">The Damned</a>, in an even more convenient format.<br />
<br />
Pre-orders of <em>Shadows of the Damned</em> from the <a href="http://eastore.ea.com/store/ea/en_US/DisplayProductDetailsPage/ThemeID.718200/productID.208594200">EA Store</a>, <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-360/games/shadows-of-the-damned/84346">GameStop</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Shadows-Damned-Playstation-3/dp/B00432O50W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1305134613&amp;sr=8-1">Amazon</a> will come with a free download of the 12-track soundtrack. Amazon specifies that the incentive applies to existing pre-orders, too, so if you've already put money down on the Suda-Mikami grindhouse epic, you're already getting a musical bonus!<br />
<br />
You can hear a bit of the soundtrack under the funny voice-overs in this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/suda-and-mikami-get-silly-in-shadows-of-the-damned-dev-diary/">dev diary</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/pre-order-shadows-of-the-damned-and-get-the-damned-soundtrack/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pre-order Shadows of the Damned and get the Damned soundtrack</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/pre-order-shadows-of-the-damned-and-get-the-damned-soundtrack/">Pre-order Shadows of the Damned and get the Damned soundtrack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 May 2011 18:30:00 EST. Watch as famous game designers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/suda-51">Goichi Suda</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shinji-mikami">Shinji Mikami</a> pretend to strangle each another, act like zombies and generally goof off. The point? They're promoting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>, the new survival-horror title they're co-developing for EA. Oh, there's plenty of gameplay footage in here, too.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/suda-and-mikami-get-silly-in-shadows-of-the-damned-dev-diary/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Suda and Mikami get silly in Shadows of the Damned dev diary</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/suda-and-mikami-get-silly-in-shadows-of-the-damned-dev-diary/">Suda and Mikami get silly in Shadows of the Damned dev diary</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 03:00:00 EST. As the tall, blood-covered Frankenstein doppleganger leapt from a gigantic flame in the middle of a courtyard, I thought to myself, "Man, this guy could really use a bath." The shock set in when the demon reached into his own chest and ripped out its heart, then ate it, causing him to transform into a gigantic beast-man with a grotesque wolf's head. Howling at the moon, he summoned forth a mouthless steed covered in blood and rotting skin. Mounting his hell ride, he then conjured a trident and spear from the ether and set his sights on me.<br />
<br />
If there's one thing I can say about the brief 15-minute <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned">Shadows of the Damned</a></em> demo I played this week, it's that the game isn't short on crazy. Also, I wish I got to kill that demon and the disfigured horse he rode in on.<br />

At a recent event in San Francisco, Suda 51 from Grasshopper Manufacture announced the new launch date for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned">Shadows of the Damned</a>: June 21. That gives it two weeks to get out of E3's way (the game was originally scheduled for June 7).<br />

<em> Shadows of the Damned</em> is a bizarre, horror-themed third-person shooter coming from EA Partners and a trio of well-known Japanese developers. If the names Shinji Mikami (<em>Resident Evil</em>), Suda 51 (<em>No More Heroes</em>) and Akira Yamaoka (<em>Silent Hill</em> composer) don't ring any bells, then you really have no idea just how weird this game is going to be.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/shadows-of-the-damned-launching-on-june-21-2011/">Shadows of the Damned launching on June 21, 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Apr 2011 12:00:00 EST. Listen, Grasshopper. We get that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a> is supposed to be an action game set primarily in the deepest bowels of Hell -- that doesn't mean that you need to turn the game's <a href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=42202&amp;id=108889785816901">Facebook fan page</a> into some kind of <em>Hellwindow</em> by uploading the concept art posted below.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/shadows-of-the-damned-concept-art-is-aaah-aaaaah-what/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shadows of the Damned concept art is ... A Grasshopper Manufacture event <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/grasshopper-announcing-new-title-next-month/">originally announced</a> in February will now serve as a charity function following the March 11 earthquake. The "Grasstream 2" event will be held at the Shinjuku Loft Plaza One venue on March 30, with ticket sales going to the Red Cross -- and it will also be streamed on Ustream in both <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/channel/grasstream-2-travis-vs-garcia">English</a> (thanks to <a href="http://8-4.jp/blog/?lang=en">8-4</a>) and <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/channel/grasstream2-travis-vs-garcia">Japanese</a>.<br />
<br />
That night, Grasshopper will show <strike>a new</strike> the GDC <em>Shadows of the Damned</em> trailer, accompanied by a talk by Suda 51 and audio director Akira Yamaoka. A new "charity app" will also be introduced on stage by model Kayo Sato and J-pop group <a href="http://www.flowerlabel.jp/vanillabeans/">Vanilla Beans</a>. "If you own an iPhone or iPad," the announcement notes, "don't forget it!" This segment of the presentation is in the same time slot as the "new game announce" that was originally planned -- and features the same personalities on stage -- suggesting that a new Grasshopper-developed iPhone game is now being adapted for charitable purposes.<br />
<br />
In addition, a <em>No More Heroes 2</em> segment will feature music by Kazutoshi Iida, discussion from artists Yusuke Kozaki and Shigeto Koyama, and a talk by Suda about <em>Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,</em> which is notably similar in story to <em>No More Heroes</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/24/grasshopper-announcing-charity-app-at-streaming-event-march-30/">Grasshopper announcing 'charity app' at streaming event March 30</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned </em></a>represents not only a partnership between EA and Grasshopper Manufacture, but also a reunion between Grasshopper and Shinji Mikami, who produced its <em>Killer 7</em> for Capcom. Mikami is lending his action-horror expertise to Grasshopper's new game, completely separate from his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/shinji-mikami-to-develop-games-for-bethesda-as-zenimax-acquires/">work</a> with the Zenimax-owned Tango GameWorks.<br />
<br />
"Grasshopper is making all these great games, with really a nice visual style," Mikami told us at an EA event during last week's GDC. "I'm there to make sure the gameplay is right -- make sure it's tight, make sure it's fun. That's why I'm there." He denied the assertion that <em>Shadows of the Damned</em> would feel strongly Mikami-like." "When you look at it, you're going to say this is a Grasshopper game," he said. "When you play it, especially if you've played a <em>Resident Evil</em>, you can kind of sense 'ah, there's a little bit of<em> Resident Evil</em> here.' But I don't think it's from the start it's a Mikami game. It's definitely a Grasshopper game."<br />
<br />
We asked Mikami about the heart-shaped buttons EA was handing out at the event, which seemed hilariously out of step with the outrageous violence and manliness of <em>Damned</em>. Is <em>Shadows of the Damned</em> a love story? "There's two sides to it: there's that aspect of a love story, but it's not the romantic type of love," Mikami explained, cryptically. "It's a very adult type of love. And you'll see that when you play through the game -- it's definitely conveyed in certain aspects." Apparently, the "adult" type of love is so strong that a man can be fooled by a giant, grotesque demon wearing the shape of his girlfriend like a costume.<br />
<br />
As the interview concluded, the subject turned to another violent, quirky action game from Mikami: 2006's <em>God Hand </em>-- a title that Mikami burst into laughter upon hearing. Mikami firmly denied even a superficial relationship between his own PS2 action game and <em>Shadows of the Damned</em>, but he did tell us that "I'd like to make a sequel to <em>God Hand</em> sometime." When we suggested he could make a spiritual "sequel" to get around the Capcom-owned IP, Mikami laughed again and said "Someday, I'll do it."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/shinji-mikami-on-his-shadows-of-the-damned-role-and-adult-love/">Shinji Mikami on his Shadows of the Damned role and 'adult love'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 20:02:00 EST. At a preview event alongside GDC, EA offered the first playable demo of Grasshopper Manufacture's <em>From Dusk Till Dawn</em>-esque third-person shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>. Immediately after experiencing its floating skull sidekicks, baby-head gates, and demons in seductive-woman suits, we spoke to Grasshopper's CEO, Suda 51, and asked the first thing that came to mind: how did he convince EA to back such a <em>strange</em> game?<br />
<br />
Suda, of course, understood the intention, saying that "strange equals compliment for us." And besides, "Actually, EA has always respected our punk rock style. It was really easy, and we had a lot of freedom. EA is not just a giant corporation, but they're very accepting." He said that Grasshopper pitched the game to EA -- though later in the same interview, he told us that it was at EA's request that the game became a shooter. "We wanted to do well with the Western market," Suda said, "and we wanted to have that challenge of creating shooters," and so the studio agreed.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/voice-of-the-damned-suda-51-on-being-an-ea-partner-and-survivin/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Voice of the Damned: Suda 51 on being an EA Partner and surviving the Japanese market</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/voice-of-the-damned-suda-51-on-being-an-ea-partner-and-survivin/">Voice of the Damned: Suda 51 on being an EA Partner and surviving the Japanese market</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 14:00:00 EST. If you thought Grasshopper Manufacture was "selling out" by making a third-person shooter, of all things, with EA Partners, of all people, you need not worry about such a thing. Having played <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned">Shadows of the Damned</a> </em>for about 20 minutes, I can confirm that it is a true Grasshopper game, full of the punk rock style, weird humor, brash, sexy women (one of whom wears mechanical devices on her arms and legs, and causes earthquakes when she dances), and over-the-top melee violence you'd expect from Suda 51's studio.<br />
<br />
It just has better production values.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-3-8-11/">Shadows of the Damned (3/8/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-3-8-11/#3953548"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shadows3801_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-3-8-11/#3953549"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shadows3802_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-3-8-11/#3953550"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shadows3803_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-3-8-11/#3953551"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shadows3804_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-the-damned-3-8-11/#3953552"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shadows3805_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/shadows-of-the-damned-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shadows of the Damned preview: Goat toward the light</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/shadows-of-the-damned-preview/">Shadows of the Damned preview: Goat toward the light</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 12:30:00 EST. Halloween is in October, EA.<br />
<br />
It looks like the publisher has forgotten that, pegging June as the month to release two of its upcoming horror games. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned"><em>Shadows of the Damned</em></a>, a "psychological action thriller" from Shinji Mikami and Goichi Suda, is the first slated for release: June 7. <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/291484/news/shadows-of-the-damned-confirmed-for-june-release/">CVG</a> notes that this is a "worldwide" release date. A week later, on June 14, is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alice-madness-returns"><em>Alice: Madness Returns</em></a>, EA's sequel to the classic American McGee platformer.<br />

Two horror games, two weeks. But we can't help but wonder: will one be a trick while the other a treat?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/01/shadows-of-the-damned-and-alice-madness-returns-get-june-releas/">Shadows of the Damned and Alice: Madness Returns get June release dates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Mar 2011 19:20:00 EST. Maybe you didn't notice, but this guy is <em>made of blood</em>. He's a "blood monster," if you will, and he's just one of many bosses players will face in Grasshopper Manufacture's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shadows-of-the-damned">Shadows of the Damned</a></em>. More horrific V-Day screens can be found after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/14/shadows-of-the-damned-blood-boss-pours-its-heart-out-in-new-scre/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shadows of the Damned blood boss pours its heart out in new screenshots</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/14/shadows-of-the-damned-blood-boss-pours-its-heart-out-in-new-scre/">Shadows of the Damned blood boss pours its heart out in new screenshots</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 20:00:00 EST. In a statement to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-01-shinji-mikami-to-continue-on-dmd">Eurogamer</a>, the new parent company said that "Shinji will serve as creative lead on the games developed at Tango Gamework[s] and will fulfil his remaining obligations to Grasshopper pursuant to their prior agreement." We wouldn't bet on Mikami continuing to freelance with other companies after the existing agreements have elapsed, which casts doubt on his contribution to a <em>Vanquish</em> sequel with Sega -- if one is ever approved.<br />
<br />
In addition to confirming his continued influence on Grasshopper's stylish shooter, the statement suggests that Tango Gameworks will continue to operate as a unit, rather than having its staff absorbed into Zenimax's Bethesda teams.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/02/shinji-mikami-still-working-on-shadows-of-the-damned-after-bethe/">Shinji Mikami still working on Shadows of the Damned after Bethesda deal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 22:00:00 EST. We cornered one of the "Video Game Band" members, composer Akira Yamaoka, to discuss his role creating music and sound for the "psychological action thriller." We also discuss his old gig at Konami and how he feels about passing the <em>Silent Hill</em> torch (at least for now). <br />
<strong><br />
Joystiq: Were you excited to have your new music premiere in the trailer this evening? </strong><br />
<br />
Akira Yamaoka: Very exciting, yes. <br />
<strong><br />
Were you also nervous about showing your first project outside of Konami?</strong><br />
<br />
Not nervous. I was more excited about the project. <br />

"We've had you waiting for a long time." Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51 and Platinum's Shinji Mikami took the stage at EA's TGS showcase to reveal <em>Shadows of the Damned</em>, a new "psychological action thriller" from EA's Partners division. According to Suda, he and Mikami wanted to make this game for a long time, and searched for the right publisher to bring it to a global audience. "Finally, today, we can reveal our game that we've been working on together with EA," he said. The game is expected to release in 2011.<br />
<br />
EA Partners announced this new horror franchise in August 2008, under the direction of game "auteurs" Suda and Shinji Mikami. Since then, Grasshopper has increased its roster of stars with musician Akira Yamaoka and designer Kazutoshi Iida, released <em>No More Heroes 2</em>, and announced the downloadable <em>Sine Mora</em>.<br />
<br />
in this game, a character named Garcia travels to Hell to rescue his love. Hopefully, this will be a bit classier than<em> Dante's Inferno</em>...<br />
