Tune in every Wednesday for thoughts on white-haired villains, giant robots, Infinity+1 swords, and everything else the wonderful world of JRPGs has to offer.</small></font><br /><div> <hr size="2" style="padding-left: 5px; " width="100%" /></div><div style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/when-genres-collide-why-devil-survivor-2-works-so-well-and-nam/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/devilsurvivor2.jpg" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; margin-left: 4px; margin-right: 4px; margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px; " /></a></div>One of the dullest strategy RPGs ever made is <em>Namco x Capcom</em>, a forgotten Japan-only release for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. Playing the crossover was about as exciting as banging your head against the wall -- the two activities are equally repetitive.<br /><br />The reason it fails so completely is paradoxically the very reason that it looks so appealing in trailers: the active, combo-based combat. <em>Namco x Capcom</em>'s combat isn't too bad at first, but it quickly becomes a series of using the same combos again and again, across maps that take ages to clear out. I've had math tests that were more fun. But now we have <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Devil-Survivor-2/">Devil Survivor 2</a></em>, which manages to succeed in every way that <em>Namco x Capcom</em>'s battle system failed.<br /><br />The key here is that, as far as I can tell, <em>Devil Survivor</em> is the only SRPG spinoff that retains some semblance of what made the original so popular in the first place. Now hear me out before you start typing that angry comment. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Final-Fantasy-Tactics/">Final Fantasy Tactics</a></em> is a fine strategy RPG, but it has much more in common with <em>Tactics Ogre</em> than most mainline <em>Final Fantasy</em> games (<em>Final Fantasy XII</em> notwithstanding). Replace the jobs with more generic classes, switch out the Chocobos for horses, and you'd hardly know the difference.<br /><br />It's easy enough, I suppose, to shoehorn an existing universe into the basic framework provided by the likes of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Tactics-Ogre/">Tactics Ogre</a></em>. But speaking the language of the genre without sacrificing the spirit of the original game is considerably harder. That's why I'm so impressed with <em>Devil Survivor</em> and its sequel, which manage to translate the battle system of a traditional RPG into an SRPG setting without missing a beat. Just how impressed was I by <em>Devil Survivor 2</em>, specifically? Just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/devil-survivor-2-review/">read my review</a> to find out.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-survivor-2-2-29-12/">Devil Survivor 2 (2/29/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-survivor-2-2-29-12/#4857014"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/devilsurvivor2screens01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-survivor-2-2-29-12/#4857015"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/devilsurvivor2screens02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-survivor-2-2-29-12/#4857016"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/devilsurvivor2screens03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-survivor-2-2-29-12/#4857017"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/devilsurvivor2screens04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-survivor-2-2-29-12/#4857018"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/devilsurvivor2screens05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/when-genres-collide-why-devil-survivor-2-works-so-well-and-nam/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>When Genres Collide: Why Devil Survivor 2 works so well (and Namco x Capcom doesn't)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/when-genres-collide-why-devil-survivor-2-works-so-well-and-nam/">When Genres Collide: Why Devil Survivor 2 works so well (and Namco x Capcom doesn't)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 16:00:00 EST. Atlus parent company Index has posted what looks like an emulated version of the Game Boy port of the first-person RPG on the iOS App Store, for $13.99. From Japan-only release to digitally distributed on your phone -- that's quite a jump in convenience!<br /><br />Of course, you have to deal with the <em>tiny little issue</em> of the game still being in Japanese. Maybe that part's not so convenient. Combining demons is a pretty delicate art even in your native language!<br /><br />[Thanks, Jared.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/24/unlocalized-shin-megami-tensei-ends-up-on-ios/">Unlocalized Shin Megami Tensei ends up on iOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 09:30:00 EST. We know that the prospect of capturing and exploiting demons is a tough nut to wrap your mind around, but we're still amused by how perplexed everyone is in the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/devil-survivor-overclocked">Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked</a></em> trailer posted above. Atlus announced the release window today and sent out new screenshots, which you can enjoy in our gallery.<br />
<br />
<em>Overclocked</em> includes everything from the DS game -- about a group of Tokyo residents attempting to stop demons from invading the city through interdimensional rifts, before everyone dies -- with an extra eighth day added to everyone's projected lifespan, and voice acting added throughout.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-overclocked-3ds/">Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (3DS)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-overclocked-3ds/#3819423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/devilsurvivorscreen12601_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-overclocked-3ds/#3819425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/devilsurvivorscreen12602_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-overclocked-3ds/#3819426"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/devilsurvivorscreen12603_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-overclocked-3ds/#3819427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/devilsurvivorscreen12604_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-overclocked-3ds/#3819428"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/devilsurvivorscreen12605_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/26/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-overclocked-due-in-north-amer/">Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked due in North America this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Jan 2011 10:36:00 EST. <em>Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor</em> is one of the best unsung RPGs on Nintendo's current-gen handheld -- which might have something to do with the fact that it's not the easiest game to find in stores. Fortunately, our chances of getting the hands on the game will likely improve later this year, when Atlus releases <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-over-clock"><em>Devil Survivor Over Clock</em></a>, a 3DS update of the original 2009 title, in Japan.<br />
<br />
In addition to a couple of extra titular words and a third dimension, <em>Over Clock</em> will expand the game's seven-day-long plotline by an additional day. This extra 24-hour period includes 20 new summonable demons, new maps and additional difficulties. The game will also now be fully voiced this time around, which should make some of its more over-the-top dialogue infinitely more entertaining. An Atlus representative remained tight-lipped when we asked about the game's U.S. release plans, but we've got our fingers crossed for news on the horizon.<br />
<br />
For now, <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/news/201101/06037418.html">check out Famitsu</a> for a handful of screens from the spruced-up 3D RPG.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/05/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-getting-a-3ds-remake/">Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor getting enhanced 3DS version</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 20:30:00 EST. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil_Summoner:_Soul_Hackers"><em>Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers</em></a> is a game originally released back in 1997 for the Sega Saturn in Japan. It was a sequel to <em>Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner</em>, itself a game within the same <em>Megami Tensei</em> universe inhabited by the <em>Persona</em> series. Publisher Atlus has tried a few times to bring the title to the states, but Sony hasn't yet allowed it, so a group of fans calling itself "Devil Hackers" is <a href="http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,11939.html">working on a fan-made translation</a> of the title, playable on the PSP.<br />

You can watch a "teaser trailer" of the translation after the break -- but someone needs to translate the word "teaser" for the Devil Hackers, because it's <em>thirteen</em> minutes long. Assuming things work themselves out, fans interested in playing the game in English should get their chance soon.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/31/devil-summoner-soul-hackers-receiving-fan-translation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers receiving fan translation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/31/devil-summoner-soul-hackers-receiving-fan-translation/">Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers receiving fan translation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 09:00:00 EST. The not-so-nice part is that said CDs don't work.<br />
<br />
Atlus acknowledged the manufacturing error responsible for the issue, and has instituted a replacement program for the discs. You can click <a href="http://www.atlus.com/strangejourneycd">here</a> to sign up for a replacement CD, and you'll be bobbing your head to the sounds of demonic invasion in two to four weeks. Or, for others, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey"><em>Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey</em></a> will be the perfect game to play during cutscenes. In any case, Atlus is dropping <em>Shin Megami Tensei </em>on an RPG-crowded market on March 23, and sent out the above trailer to remind us all of that fact.<br />
<br />
If you're ready to launch an expedition into a game <em>about</em> an expedition into a mysterious demon-filled vortex in the Antarctic, bundle up and check out the trailer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/02/send-humans-to-investigate-this-shin-megami-tensei-strange-jour/">Send humans to investigate this Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 18:45:00 EST. Atlus has already thrown a <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey-launch-copies-include-bonus/">soundtrack CD</a> in with every copy in the first printing, and now it is offering a "mini-poster" with copies of the DS role-playing game pre-ordered through <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=76262">GameStop</a>.<br />
<br />
In the press release announcing the bonus, Atlus's Aram Jabbari extolled the somewhat more tangible nature of the poster than the CD, calling it "a bonus item that you can feel, something you can caress gently and hold against your face, something you can take a big whiff of and enjoy." You are, of course, welcome to just put the poster on your wall and look at it occasionally.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/26/shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey-poster-with-gamestop-pre-ord/">Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey poster with GameStop pre-orders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 14:00:00 EST. The PSP version of <em>Persona 3</em> isn't a direct port of the original PS2 RPG. Instead, it streamlines the experience for handheld play and adds a new playable female character, with her own "Social Links, special events, and unique romantic opportunities." In addition, <em>P3P</em> adds a few cameos from <em>Persona 4</em>, and introduces five difficulty settings, ranging from "beginner" to "maniac." The battle system has also drastically changed, with players able to directly control teammates.<br />
<br />
The UMD version will be available at retail on July 6th, with a PSN version expected soon after. The listing is for a game with the temporary title <em>Shin Megami Tensei</em>. Even if this <em>is</em> real, of course, the <em>Shin Megami Tensei</em> series seems impossibly diverse, and could mean anything from first-person dungeon crawlers to MMOs.<br />
<br />
While many of the spin-off games called <em>Shin Megami Tensei </em>in America -- like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Persona/"><em>Persona</em></a><em> </em>series and <em>Devil Survivor</em> -- don't carry the <em>Shin Megami Tensei</em> name in Japan, there's still a staggering variety of games that <em>could</em> fall under the label, given that the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/mystery-atlus-could-be-devil-summoner-2/">Devil Summoner</a> </em>series, the recent <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey"><em>Strange Journey</em></a>, and, yes, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/esrb-rates-shin-megami-tensei-mmo-for-us/"><em>Shin Megami Tensei Imagine</em></a> (the MMO) have been branded with the "main" series title. Basically, there are a <em>ton</em> of spin-offs, and some of them include <em>Shin Megami Tensei</em> in their name.<br />
<br />
For its first appearance on a next-gen system, though, chances seem a <em>bit</em> higher that this will be the "real" followup to <em>Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne</em>. Whatever it is, it'll probably involve demons. And cool character art.<br />

After the completion of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/persona-4">Persona 4</a></em>, the team responsible for the game at Atlus split in two, with one half tasked with creating <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/persona-3-portable/">Persona 3 Portable</a></em>, while the other half got to work on "an original new game." According to a translation by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/12/18/persona_4_staffers_on_new_game">Andriasang</a> of <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/blog/p3p/1230607_2045.html">the </a><em><a href="http://www.famitsu.com/blog/p3p/1230607_2045.html">P3 Portable</a></em><a href="http://www.famitsu.com/blog/p3p/1230607_2045.html"> creator's blog</a>, that first game is "nearing completion," and the two teams will re-form [insert Voltron reference here] in 2010.<br />
<em><br />
Persona 4</em> producer Katsura Hashino says that the re-unified team will work on "an even bigger title" in the coming year, though no details have been formally announced. We'll just have to giddily think about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/atlus-shipping-3d-dot-game-heroes-on-may-11/">impending release of </a><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/atlus-shipping-3d-dot-game-heroes-on-may-11/">3D Dot Game Heroes</a></em> in North America, while we wait for Hashino to <em>dish</em>.<br />

When the publisher <em>doesn't</em> release a game with an artbook or soundtrack or figurine or something, <em>somebody</em> out there is going to be irritated to buy <em>just a game.</em> <br />
<br />
That won't happen with <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey">Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey</a>,</em> though. Atlus announced today that every launch copy of the first-person RPG will include a soundtrack disc. You'll have to wait a bit longer to <em>get</em> that launch copy: the publisher also announced that the release date has moved from the March 10 date found on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/14/nintendo-dates-endless-ocean-2-pokemon-heartgold-more/">Nintendo's Q1 schedule</a> to March 23.<br />

Maybe being localized by Atlus isn't that <em>strange</em> for a <em>Shin Megami Tensei</em> game. In fact, we'd say it's pretty normal these days!<em><br />
<br />
</em>Atlus announced today that it will bring over the first-person DS RPG <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey"><em>Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey</em></a> in Spring 2010 (of course). The game features the demon negotiation that <em>SMT</em> fans associate with the series, in a new storyline involving a mysterious black hole opening up at the South Pole. <br />
<br />
It looks like the kind of thing that would appeal not only to fans of games like <em>SMT 3: Nocturne</em>, but also to people who enjoy the DS's dungeon RPGs like <em>Etrian Odyssey</em>, to which it bears a strong resemblance. Journey into our gallery for screens and art.<br />

The remainder of the description pretty much fits the MMO bill, as it mentions dungeon crawling, a multitude of weapons and spells, and real-time combat.<br /><br />The game sounds like it's a bit on the mature side, too -- the listing mentions arterial spray, pools of blood and female demons "scantily clad, hovering in bondage-style outfits, half-open blouses, or the tightest of short-shorts." Hey, underworld, get with the times! Short-shorts haven't been cool since the Nixon administration.<br /><br />Head past the break for a trailer from the Japanese release, courtesy of <a href="http://www.aeriagames.com/">Aeria Games</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/esrb-rates-shin-megami-tensei-mmo-for-us/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ESRB rates Shin Megami Tensei MMO for US</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/esrb-rates-shin-megami-tensei-mmo-for-us/">ESRB rates Shin Megami Tensei MMO for US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 04:00:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/10/13/visit-persona-4s-town-in-persona-3-portable/">Siliconera</a>, Inaba, the town featured in <em>Persona 4</em> will be a playable locale in the upcoming port. You must play as the female lead in order to visit the Amagiya Inn -- two years before the events of <em>P4</em>. There, you'll be able to meet a younger version of Yukiko.<br />

Certainly, it's not the biggest news surrounding the game, but it gives us an excuse to post this video. <em>P3P</em> hits Japan next month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/15/persona-3-portable-features-persona-4-cameo/">Persona 3 Portable features Persona 4 cameo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 16:30:00 EST. You would assume, perhaps wisely, that a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/persona-4">Persona 4</a> </em>postmortem would refer to performing an autopsy on a poor soul who died of old age while trying to finish the epically long RPG. But all we've got for you today is the game's creators discussing the highs and lows of development with <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=25469">Gamasutra</a>.<br />
<br />
As is usual, the "lows" are actually just the difficult parts of designing the game rather than what didn't work about the title, but it's still worth a read to see how Atlus tackled the Herculean task of creating a 100-hour game that at least <em>some </em>of you lived to see the end of.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/06/persona-4-team-performs-a-post-mortem/">Persona 4 team performs a postmortem</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 18:15:00 EST. Japanese gaming pub <a href="http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/194/194875/">Dengenki</a> recently polled its readers on what series they'd like to see translated into anime form. The Top 10 list looks nearly exactly the same as our own wishlist:<br />
<ul>
    <li><span>1. Persona 4</span></li>
    <li><span>2. Phoenix Wright</span></li>
    <li><span>3. Okami</span></li>
    <li><span>4. Kingdom Hearts</span></li>
    <li><span>5. Idol Master</span></li>
    <li><span>6. Metal Gear Solid</span></li>
    <li><span>7. Yakuza</span></li>
    <li><span>8. BlazBlue</span></li>
    <li><span>9. Persona 3</span></li>
    <li><span>10. Atelier Rorona </span></li>
</ul>
Atlus' PS2 RPG <em>Persona 4</em> tops the list, managing to beat out some big names like <em>Kingdom Hearts</em> and <em>Metal Gear Solid</em>. Perhaps the success of <em>Persona: Trinity Soul</em> reminded readers that the franchise works in serialized TV format? While we'd certainly like to see another <em>Persona</em> anime, an adaptation of <em>Phoenix Wright</em> seems like a no-brainer. Capcom, are you reading this?<br />

Atlus just isn't quite done with remaking <em>Persona 3</em>. A new issue of <em>Famitsu</em> has hit Japanese newsstands and one of the most notable entries is an advertisement for <em>Persona 3: Portable</em>. While details are slim, the ad prominently shows a new female character standing aside the nameless main character of <em>Persona 3</em> and <em>Persona 3: FES</em>.<br />
<br />
The ad proclaims the game will be available on November 1st, which, honestly, seems rather sudden. (No Q1 slump for Japan?) If it follows the model of the <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/atlus-provides-video-walkthrough-of-persona-psp/">PSP port</a> of the original <em>Persona</em>, we're bound to see a ton of extras remixed into the game.<br />

We already knew that Atlus's new game was called <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/atlus-countdown-pre-reveals-shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey/">Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey</a> </em>from information found on the site itself. <a href="http://wiieveryday.blogspot.com/2009/07/famitsu-20090724.html">New scans</a> reveal that <em>Strange Journey</em> is a new first-person RPG (like <em>Etrian Odyssey</em>) for DS.<br /><br />The game, which uses some demon art from <em>Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor</em> for some of its <em>three hundred plus</em> demons, follows explorers of a new demon-filled dimension that has opened up in the South Pole. Players wear upgradable "Demonica Suits" like the one above, which is <em>kind of </em>awesome.<br /><br />The new game will be out in Japan on October 8.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=368925">NeoGAF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey-is-a-first-person-rpg-for-ds/">Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is a first-person RPG for DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 10:45:00 EST. Atlus posted a <a href="http://new.atlusnet.jp/">teaser site</a> for a mysterious new game, to be officially revealed July 24. The kind-of obscured teaser image shows Earth with a big hole in it.<br />
<br />
Fans ended the suspense <em>immediately</em> by finding the URL for the <em>logo for the teased game</em> hidden in the site's source code. It's since been removed, but not before a <a href="http://game81.blog38.fc2.com/blog-entry-494.html">Japanese blogger</a> could save it! The logo for <em>Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey</em> can be seen above, along with what could be a release date.<br />

There's still plenty to be revealed, like platform and, of course, <em>what kind of game it is</em>, but we feel a great sense of relief about not having to wait for the title.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/atlus-countdown-pre-reveals-shin-megami-tensei-strange-journey/">Atlus countdown pre-reveals Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 17:55:00 EST. PS2 and BC-compatible PS3 owners, watch out! One of the best RPGs of 2008 is now available for cheap: Atlus' <em>Persona 4</em> is amazon's Gold Box <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fgoldbox%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcs%255Ftop%255Fnav%255Fgb27&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957">Deal of the Day</a>, its price slashed from $40 to $26. This unique RPG goes away from the sci-fi and fantasy worlds of most RPGs and offers a mature look into rural Japanese life. Other PS2 games are expected to drop in price today as well, so expect a <em>Yakuza 2</em> discount later on.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/deal-of-the-day-persona-4-for-26/">Deal of the Day: Persona 4 for $26</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 12:30:00 EST. Much like its predecessor, Atlus' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/persona-4"><em>Persona 4</em></a> is coming to Europe via another big-name publisher. This time Square Enix is picking up the dungeon-crawler and releasing it in European and other PAL territories on Friday the 13th. That's quite a suitable date for a murder mystery tale like <em>P4</em>. And no that "Friday the 13th" is not today; we're talking about the 13th of next month -- March.<br />
<br />
It'll come in a two-disc set including the game and a 24-track music CD. It's similar to the bundle released in North America; however, unlike the NA release, it looks like the European version won't be getting the added 100-page <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/joyswag-persona-shirts-signed-art-books/">art book</a>. Pricing for<em> P4</em> wasn't mentioned, though we suppose it won't break the bank.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/persona-4-comes-to-europe-in-march/">Persona 4 comes to Europe in March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 13:00:00 EST. Atlus is bringing a new <em>Devil Summoner</em> game to the PlayStation 2 this May. Set in a 1920s Tokyo, players take on the role of Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th in this action RPG. He'll have to find the mysterious King Abaddon in this otherworldly mystery.<br /><br />Players will be able to control two demons in combat and will be able to create new swords with the game's retooled Weapon Alchemy system. The <em>Pokemon</em> monster-collecting aspect is expanded with 200 demons to deal with.<br /><br />You can find out more about the game at the <a href="http://www.atlus.com/devilsummoner2/">official website</a> and you can check out new screenshots here:<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/devil-summoner-2-website-launched-new-trailer-released/">Devil Summoner 2 website launched, new trailer released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 17:25:00 EST. It's basically up to one a day at this point! The latest set to be revealed by the niche publisher includes one game that we knew was coming, and 101 that <em>completely</em> blindsided us.<br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/atluss-devil-survivor-revealed/"><br /><em>Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor</em></a> is a strategy RPG in which players control a team of teenagers who collect and fuse demons and battle on a hexagonal grid. This was one of the game announcements <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/atlus-leaks-devil-survivor-knights-in-the-nightmare/">revealed early</a> via Amazon.ca. It's out June 23 for $30.<br /><a href="http://www.nordcurrent.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=22&amp;Itemid=45"><br /><em>101 in 1 Explosive Megamix</em></a> is a minigame collection from European publisher Nordcurrent. It comprises various sports, puzzle, and action minigames, and it doesn't really look like much. It's an <em>extremely</em> bizarre game for Atlus to pick up. Maybe it knows something we don't, and the game is actually <em>awesome.</em> We'll find out when it comes out April 21, at a price of $20.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/07/atlus-announces-shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-and-some-rand/">Atlus announces Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor and some random minigame collection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. The game will be available in Japan on April 29 and will include new animated cutscenes and an improved user interface. No word yet on whether Atlus will bring this to other regions, but if the success of <em>Persona 3</em> and <em>4</em> are anything to go by, we wouldn't be surprised.<br /></div>
<br />So, if you're a relatively new <em>Shin Megami Tensei</em> convert and were thinking about firing up your old PS1 to try out the original <em>Persona</em>, it might be worthwhile to wait a couple of months. <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22015">Gamasutra</a> has examined the meaningful portrayal of sexuality in the recently released <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Persona-4/">Persona 4</a></em>. The protagonist, Kanji Tatsumi, views his alter ego, Shadow Kanji, as an openly gay and flamboyant manifestation within the in-game world, <em>The Midnight Channel</em>.<br />
<br />
Although Kanji's sexuality remains ambiguous, the developer does not reject the possibility that he might be gay. Instead, the decision to leave Kenji's sexuality open was made to give players more context to the views on homosexuality in Japan. According to Yu Namba, Atlus USA's <em>Persona 4</em> Project Lead, it was the developer's goal to retain the majority of the Japanese content and accurately portray the Eastern culture regarding the subject.<br />
<br />
Varying sexual orientations within games from Japan are not unheard of, with <em>Metal Gear Solid 2's</em> Vamp ranking as one of the more famous outed characters. In this case, Kanji's internal turmoil with his orientation is a fascinating take on personal journey, which no other publisher has been brave enough to bring to the North American market.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/gamasutra-examines-sexuality-homophobia-in-persona-4/">Gamasutra examines sexuality, homophobia in Persona 4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 19:00:00 EST. Retail and other game-related listings such as the GameFly rental service can be rather <em>devilish</em> in regards to unveiling upcoming titles. At times, they'll accidentally let word of a new game slip out without ever knowing they've done so. We have something called "unwitting database maintenance" to thank for that. <br /><br />In this case of secrecy screw-ups, <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/products/detail.asp?pid=135590">GameFly divulges</a> that Atlus plans to release a localized <span class="producttitle"><em>Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha versus King Abaddon</em> for PS2 sometime in mid-May.</span> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/23/atlus-sends-mystery-image-asks/">Atlus recently teased</a> a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shin-megami-tensei"><em>Shin Megami Tensei</em></a> title, one that seems likely to be the same as the GF listing. If these suspicions hold true, expect a return to devil summoning real soon.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Minutes after this post went live, Atlus confirmed <em>Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon</em>, stating, "The longer the title, the better the game." Every first-press copy will include a free Raiho plushie, but the general release will be "extremely limited in quantity." The game is expected to ship May 12, 2009 with an MSRP of $39.99.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-summoner-2-raidou-kuzunohavs-king-abaddon/">Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunohavs. King Abaddon</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-summoner-2-raidou-kuzunohavs-king-abaddon/#1319759"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/devilsummoner2_screens_10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-summoner-2-raidou-kuzunohavs-king-abaddon/#1319758"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/devilsummoner2_screens_09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-summoner-2-raidou-kuzunohavs-king-abaddon/#1319757"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/devilsummoner2_screens_08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-summoner-2-raidou-kuzunohavs-king-abaddon/#1319756"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/devilsummoner2_screens_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/devil-summoner-2-raidou-kuzunohavs-king-abaddon/#1319755"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/devilsummoner2_screens_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/mystery-atlus-could-be-devil-summoner-2/">Mystery Atlus title is Devil Summoner 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 14:32:00 EST. Atlus just sent one of the most mysterious e-mails we've received in quite some time. The subject line simply reads "???" and the body contains a single image. We see a mysterious silhouette with the words <em>Shin Megami Tensei</em> projected in the back.<br /><br />We're not sure who this shadowy figure is. We recently reported on a possible <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/rumor-atlus-preparing-persona-remake-for-psp/"><em>Persona</em> remake</a> on PSP. Could this be related? Or, perhaps it's the unreleased <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil_Summoner:_Kuzunoha_Raid%C5%8D_Tai_Abaddon_%C5%8C"><em>Devil Summoner: Raidou 2</em></a> for PS2? You might look at this metareview's title and think we've made a mistake. <em>No one makes PS2 games anymore</em>. Not so, and as any RPG player worth their elixir knows, Atlus has been prepping the latest in its acclaimed <em>Persona </em>series for release on the last-gen system. Now it's here, and the reviews - praising everything from its characters to its gameplay and voice acting as best-of-breed - are absolutely <em>glowing</em>. (In the sense that they're really good, not "turn off your monitor and back away slowly.")<br />

    <li><a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/12/review-persona.html">Game|Life</a> <strong>(100/100):</strong> "The truly stunning thing about <em>Persona 4</em> is that it just doesn't have any glaring flaws. Even though it doesn't stand up to the graphics of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, the clever art style makes up for that. Those who despise reading large blocks of text in games will be pleasantly surprised by the solid voice-over work applied to almost every conversation."</li>

You may be familiar with classic children's book <span style="font-style: italic;">Tight Times</span>, which depicts a family in a financial struggle. Even if you're not familiar with the book itself, you'll at least recognize the subject matter, especially after you check out the scraggly, scrowdy-row crop of titles filling our game account this week. We didn't forget to list the 360, there just <em>aren't</em> any. Yeah. Tight times.<br />
<br />
But, as no one says, in the land of <span style="font-style: italic;">Slingo Quest</span>, the <span style="font-style: italic;">Persona 4</span> is king. If you're thinking of holding off on Atlus' upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/persona-4"><em>Persona 4</em></a> in hopes that the PlayStation 2 RPG will be followed by an even shinier edition, <em>wait NOT!</em> Following April's release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/persona-3/"><em>Persona 3 FES</em></a>, which added enough new content to the RPG to fill a high school student's locker, Atlus now confirmed that "at no point in the future" will it give similar treatment to the upcoming sequel. <br />

So whether or not you plan on pre-ordering the game or strolling up to the register on day one, buy with confidence, niche role-playing faithful, when <em>Persona 4</em> drops onto shelves on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/06/atlus-bringing-persona-4-to-north-america-on-december-9/">December 9</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/atlus-no-enhanced-version-of-persona-4-planned/">Atlus: No enhanced version of Persona 4 planned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 17:45:00 EST. The latest issue of <em>Famitsu</em> features this two-page ad from Atlus, revealing the title of a new DS game: <em>Devil Survivor</em>. We can <em>kind</em> of see the kanji for <em>megami</em> next to it, which is obviously used in the company's <em>Shin Megami Tensei</em> titles. NeoGAFfer duckroll identifies the tiny kanji string as <em>Megami Ibunroku,</em> which was used in the name of the first <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revelations:_Persona">Persona</a> </em>game. So there's a faint chance it could be somehow <em>Persona</em>-related, but with the <em>Persona </em>series now pretty big, we'd imagine Atlus would actually <em>use</em> the <em>Persona</em> name on a DS spinoff.<br /><br />According to the ad, more information will be available on November 7.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/29/atlus-teases-new-devil-survivor-game/">Atlus teases new 'Devil Survivor' game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 16:00:00 EST. Our initial plan was to give you excellent readers brand new copies of Atlus' upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/persona-4"><em>Persona 4</em></a>, a desire which those purveyors of quirk deemed noble, but overly contingent on them <em>finishing the game</em>. Sensing our outraged impatience regarding the anticipated RPG's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/06/atlus-bringing-persona-4-to-north-america-on-december-9/">December 9th</a> release, they instead granted us some <em>Persona 3</em> art books (signed by character designer Shigenori Soejima!) and <em>Persona 4</em> t-shirts (tagless!). The chance to wear <em>Persona</em> on your person, eh?<br />

While Japanese audiences will be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/18/persona-4-to-school-japan-in-july/">playing <span style="font-style: italic;">Persona 4</span> this July</a>, North American gamers won't have to wait long to wander the halls of Gekkoukan High. Atlus USA has taken time away from blowing things up with small explosives this holiday weekend to announce plans to bring <span style="font-style: italic;">Persona 4</span> to North America on December 9.<br />
<br />
Sweetening the deal even further, the publisher also notes that each copy of the game will come bundled with a soundtrack CD featuring "select music" from the title, which represents the sixth in the role-playing series, and the latest to cling tightly to Sony's <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/12/17/we-3-ps2-a-year-in-review/">aging last-gen console</a>. If, however, you're having trouble waiting until this holiday season to get your <span style="font-style: italic;">Persona </span>fix, check out the game's English announcement trailer after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/06/atlus-bringing-persona-4-to-north-america-on-december-9/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Atlus bringing Persona 4 to North America on December 9</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/06/atlus-bringing-persona-4-to-north-america-on-december-9/">Atlus bringing Persona 4 to North America on December 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 06 Jul 2008 09:45:00 EST. <strong> [Update: Entry period is over, folks. We're contacting the winners by email, so go check!]</strong><br />
<br />
If you missed out on <em>Persona 3</em>, last year's criminally under-printed and underplayed -- but <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps2/persona3">not under-appreciated</a>! -- high school sim-cum-dungeon crawler, here's your chance to take "The Journey." (And for those who didn't miss out, we know you've been dying to discover "The Answer!")<br />
<br />
In conjunction with this week's release of <em>Persona 3 FES</em>, Joystiq and Atlus are giving away three copies of the game, each accompanied by an art book signed by lead artist Shigenori Soejima. This updated edition of the game features the original story ("The Journey") stuffed with new content, including quests, events, items and Personas, plus an additional 30-hour-plus episode, "The Answer," which promises to deliver <em>the true ending</em>. (Joytip: Game data from the original <em>Persona 3</em> release can be imported into <em>FES</em>.)<br />
<br />
Just follow these rules to enter:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Leave a comment telling us what you think "FES" stands for. (We know, we know, it's short for "festival" -- but c'mon! Be creative.)</li>
    <li>You must be 18 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec).</li>
    <li>Limit 1 entry (comment) per person per calendar day.</li>
    <li>This entry period ends at <strong>5:00pm ET on Friday, April 25th</strong>. We'll randomly select three winners at that time (<em>please</em> check your email!).</li>
