Konami's Silent Hill franchise has forgotten more about keeping us hiding beneath our covers than most games will ever know. Even EA's own Glen Schofield tips his hat to the series, telling us earlier this week that he considers the 1999 PlayStation original to be among his favorite survival horror games ever. But after nearly a decade of stumbling through the fog, it's easy to feel that the dilapidated burg of Silent Hill has gotten a bit too long in the tooth.

For the series' sixth installment, Konami has handed the blood-soaked baton over to external developer Double Helix Games, a recent mash-up of The Collective and Shiny Entertainment. The result is this fall's upcoming release, Silent Hill: Homecoming, and we recently puzzled our way out of mist long enough to ask the game's lead designer, Jason Allen, just why we should care about this latest return trip to Silent Hill.

Gallery: Silent Hill: Homecoming

We began things by asking Allen what he considers to be his favorite example of survival horror done right, a question he was initially apprehensive to answer. "That's a tough question," he told us. "I'm always loathe to pick a favorite amongst the many titles I've played."

He went on to describe two series that "have always left an indelible mark" on the developer's psyche. "The first," he began, "was the System Shock series on PC. It [had] one of the best atmospheres of any game I've played; truly capturing the feeling abandonment."

"Our mandate was not to change the existing game but to improve on certain elements whilst maintaining the core experience."

"Secondly for generating fear," he added, "the Fatal Frame series I've always felt was one of the greatest... The first time I played the game, I couldn't play it alone and at night. I had to wait for daylight before I'd brave those dark hallways." This last bit made us chuckle, if only to know that we were not the only ones to come away terrified by Tecmo's take on interactive horror.

But of course, Allen's heart at the moment belongs to Silent Hill. "I felt it has the greatest depth of characterizations and the most compelling narratives of all the survival horror games I've played." But will this carry over with his team's own telling of the Silent Hill mythos?

"Our mandate was not to change the existing game but to improve on certain elements whilst maintaining the core experience," commented the game's lead designer, who told us of his belief that when it comes to survival horror two "prime components" are puzzles and fighting.

Of course, some explanation is in order. "Very often the puzzles are abstractions and have little to do with the core of the narrative. We've tried to focus on making the puzzles an integral part of the narrative experience; to ensure that the reason for solving the puzzle and the puzzle's construction are understandable in the context of the journey."

He continued: "Secondly, we've tried to focus on making the combat more accessible to casual gamers, whilst providing depth for the more experienced players. That said, Silent Hill has always focused more on the narrative elements of survival horror and not simply been about killing the next monster."

"We've tried to focus on making the puzzles an integral part of the narrative experience."

He had us right up until he dropped the dreaded C-word, leaving us hoping that by taking a more casual approach to combat, the devs will somehow keep from dumbing it down. Still, Allen reassured us somewhat, however, noting that "the team has always strived to maintain that distinctive Silent Hill experience, and it's that experience unique to this series that sets it apart from the rest of the games within this genre."

As it stands, we remain hopeful that Double Helix will manage recapture the series' near-trademark sense of dread and leave us shopping for a change of pants when Silent Hill: Homecoming ships for the Xbox 360 and PS3 this September.

For now, however, we look to wrap up our look at some of 2008's most notable survival horror titles tomorrow by analyzing just how creepy little girls can be in Monolith's upcoming follow-up to F.E.A.R., Project Origin.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Silent Hill: Homecoming screenshots be freaky, foggy

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

Though the characters in Wes Craven's magnum opus would be an obvious exception, we're pretty sure that protagonists in horror movies have never seen horror movies -- looking at the Silent Hill series, it's clear this rule applies to video games as well. Not that we're complaining, as if the characters in Konami's beloved horror series would collectively realize that abandoned, fog-filled towns are abandoned and fog-filled for a reason, they would probably stop going to them in search of deceased or missing wives/offspring/brothers -- and we wouldn't have these gorgeous screenshots from the upcoming Silent Hill: Homecoming to drool over.

So thanks, horror genre characters. Your obvious ineptitude for danger avoidance may deliver you into the jaws of certain doom, but it provides us with near-limitless entertainment -- and really, isn't that more important in the long run?
Though Konami's official announcement of a PlayStation 2 version of Silent Hill Origins is welcomed, it arrives about as unexpectedly as that surprise birthday party you planned for yourself once. That might have been more enjoyable if you had any friends, but then you're far too busy clobbering jittery, faceless nurses in your free time.

Incidentally, that's exactly what you do in this game. Casting some light on the spooky town's black history, Silent Hill Origins for PS2 aims to impart the "chilling, suspenseful and fear-filled experience that handheld gamers encountered" to those who prefer considerably larger screens. "This is their chance to learn more of the mystery and mythos surrounding Silent Hill that's been hinted at in earlier games and made the series such a success," said Anthony Crouts, VP of marketing and ineffective secret keeping at Konami Digital Entertainment.

We'll share further details as soon as they come shambling out of the foreboding mist.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Retailers listing Silent Hill Origins for PS2

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PSP, Action
We told you last month that we thought you'd soon hear more about a PS2 version of the PSP's Silent Hill Origins. Heck, the two sites even have box art (seen at right). Now, Konami, would you please just announce the thing so we can start stocking up on Depends? ... Wait. No. We mean Game Fuel. Yeah. Game Fuel. You know, so we can play all night because we're not scared at all. So get this: Konami made a (by most accounts) pretty good game called Silent Hill Origins for the PSP, and according to a Kotaku tipster, the company will be moving the game to the PS2 in March 2008! Making a port of a decent game from a well-regarded franchise for a system with 120 million units sold worldwide, can you believe it? ... Yes, so can we.

As we said, this hasn't been confirmed by Konami, but it seems like one of two things would be happening right now. Either they are porting SHO to the PS2, or they've seen this story on the internet, fired the guy in charge of thinking of things like this and are in the preliminary stages of porting SHO to the PS2. Either way, we'd bet that you'll hear more about it soon.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Silent Hill V details finally surface

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360

It's been a while since Konami first announced Silent Hill V, and details revealed since have been few and far between. A new issue of Official Playstation Magazine, however, has revealed some new tidbits of information about the latest in the survival horror series.

The radio and the flashlight -- which were abandoned in the previous Silent Hill game -- return in the fifth console installment of the series. Unlike previous games, the camera will feature full 3D movement, and the article hints at some possible Sixaxis functionality in the PS3 version. The rest of the article features some new, "exclusive" images and character renderings, and recaps story and gameplay elements that were already known, but it could be a nice refresher for anyone who's forgotten exactly what to look forward to.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq interview: Silent Hill: Origin's Akira Yamaoka

Filed under: Culture, Sony PSP, Interviews, Galleries

Not quite as terrifying as the titles he's been working on, Akira Yamaoka sat down with us during E For All to give us a teensy bit of information about the upcoming Silent Hill: Origins, and what it took to bring the game to the PlayStation Portable. While he didn't tell us the secret to being scary on a much smaller screen, we imagine it'll mean a lot of OMG IN YOUR FACE moments and spooky noises. Perhaps they'll even tell people this is a game better enjoyed with headphones.

Check out the brief interview after the break.

Gallery: E for All 2007

So, what role do you play in the world of Silent Hill?

I oversee all parts of the Silent Hill franchise, and I also composed the music for Silent Hill: Origins.

When you were composing the music, did you take themes from the other games and rework them? Or did you compose entirely new music?

Well, the story of Silent Hill: Origins takes place before all of the other Silent Hill games. So, I decided to compose the music so that it has some of the atmosphere of the first Silent Hill.

Will this game ever go beyond the PSP to other platforms?

Right now it's only on the PSP, but if the customers or the market request other platforms, then I'll think about it.

What was the most challenging part of taking a game that has always been a console title and moving to a handheld system?

The main challenge was to keep terrifying players on the handheld. It's much easier to do that on the console. We adjusted the combat system so that all players can feel the horror.

Why is it easier to be scarier on a console? Just because of the screen size?

The biggest difference the screen size, yes. That makes everyone focus on what's going on. On a small screen, it's a bit harder to keep everyone focused on the world of Silent Hill. That was the biggest challenge.

So, have you been successful? Is this title as scary as the other Silent Hill games?

Yes, I'm very confident that we've done a good job and that players will be scared by this title. Silent Hill: Origins has some keys to understand the entire world of Silent Hill and the other games. Playing this game will help people better understand those mysteries.

What will you be working on next?

Next up will be Silent Hill V. I'm also working on some other games, and I'm thinking about producing a game on the next-gen consoles.

Well thanks for your time, and for scaring the pants off of us. If more people were populating arcades, we'd probably get more games like Silent Hill: The Arcade, released in Japan last month. Of course, if our arcades included more games like Silent Hill and fewer sweaty meat sacks trying to lose that last 230 pounds on a DDR machine electronically beeping out a prayer for a quick death, we'd probably be more apt to go there.

Luckily for us, we have footage like the above clip. Silent Hill V developer The Collective is borrowing a few Christopher Gans film devices for its upcoming game sequel, according to an article in the latest EGM. Inspired by the Silent Hill movie, SHV will feature real-time shifts between reality and the 'Otherworld,' forcing helpless players to suffer through the ghastly transformations of their immediate environments. Enhancing this horror, The Collective will use motion-capture techniques to model the game's monsters, just as the film crew did, creating vivid movement, like the sexually charged lure of the Siam, a perverse fusion of genders.

SHV's central character is Alex Shepard, a 22-year-old wounded war vet, who abandons the care of a VA hospital after he experiences a premonition that his little bro is in danger. When he arrives home to a small New England town he finds brother and father missing, mom in a catatonic state, and ... a lot of damn fog. Though Alex's experiences in combat (not specified, but we've got a hunch...) will play into the game's psychological manifestations, The Collective apparently isn't out to make a political statement. Nope, the priority is still to frighten, and with this goal in mind, the dev team is bringing back the atmospheric screen grain filter, as well as incorporating some new effects like hairline cracks.

Taking advantage of Alex's military background, boss battles will also make an epic return. (The Collective is researching Zelda titles for inspiration.) And, of course, endings will be plentiful, determined less by singular actions and more so by gradual character choices (e.g., how the player treats NPCs). From the article, the right concepts are in place, now we're certain Konami is anxious to watch The Collective deliver.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq impressions: Silent Hill Origins

Filed under: Sony PSP, Adventure, E3

Silent Hill Origins is supernaturally beautiful. Simply analyze the picture above and note its fantastic lighting and shadows. Note the reflection in the mirror, and then be awed that this happening in real-time ... on the PSP. Silent Hill Origins is shaping up to be the best looking PSP title to date, with its great character designs, atmospheric special effects, and (as noted) the impeccable lighting.

Although the Silent Hill franchise has never really strayed far from the consoles, this handheld version is shaping up to be just as good as any other iteration of the series. Travis must navigate some beautifully creepy worlds, and fight some truly terrifying creatures. He can pick up weapons and items in the environment and use them against the ghastly denizens of Silent Hill. Controls in the game were intuitive and solid. Travis moved easily through the environment, although we found ourselves having a bit of trouble exploring the level as thoroughly as possible, trying to find all the clues.

Battle is a relatively simple affair, as Travis can easily target enemies with R. His attacks, and most importantly, finishing moves, vary greatly, depending on the weapon he's holding. Players must be resilient, though: if enemies get too close, Travis will have to do a series of button presses to escape close quarters combat. Also, Travis will want to keep a close eye on his weapons, as they degrade (quite quickly) over time. All weapons will break eventually, and Travis will want to make sure that his weapon doesn't break in the middle of a fierce battle.

Gallery: Silent Hill Origins

Travis will want to be observant and take everything in the environment. In order to streamline the experience, there is no inventory system to manage: Travis can hold as many items and weapons as he wants. Good thing, as they'll quickly disappear when fighting the numerous creatures found in the game.

We're impressed that a handheld horror game can still be .... horrifying. The direction of the game is quite commendable. Origins still features the series' trademark grainy look, and has the same sublime soundtrack. We're intrigued by the premise of the story, one that continues to get more mysterious as we play more. Travis can cross worlds by looking into a mirror; something that surprised us the first time it happened, and we can't wait to find out how Konami will take advantage of this dual-world setup.

Silent Hill Origins is shaping up to be yet another reason to own a PSP. If the final game manages to maintain all the atmosphere of the build we played at E3, it will be the definitive handheld horror experience, worthy of the Silent Hill name.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Konami announces Silent Hill V for 360, PS3

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, E3

Konami puzzled us earlier today by sending out a cryptic poem hinting that a major unexpected announcement would be coming from its press conference. Knowing that Pac-Man CE had already been announced, we were perplexed as to what Konami's announcement could possibly be. Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're sitting at said press conferencce right now, and the announcement is ... Silent Hill V (at least that's what we think it is). The game features a soldier home from a war who is searching for his missing son. As often seems to be the case, this missing person decides to the best place to run to is Silent Hill. Akira Yamaoka will return to provide a brand new mind-bending soundtrack. Konami promises more news to come.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq live at the Konami E3 07 press conference

The Konamegaton is nigh. Join us for our liveblog of the Konami press conference from E3 2007.

5:51PM - The press conference has yet to begin. We have front row seats to see if we can catch anything big.

5:53PM - Mark Franklin joins the stage. He introduces Anthony Krause, VP of marketing. He's hyping "exclusive" announcements for the conference today.

5:56PM - "Today we're announcing two new DDR titles." Wait ... didn't we already cover this?

5:57PM - More games we already know about: Contra 4 for DS. Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles and Silent Hill Origins for PSP. Dewey's Adventure for Wii. Metal Gear Solid 4 for PS3. Finally, the Hellboy game for PSP, PS3 and Xbox 360. Fishing Master for WIi. When are we getting something we haven't heard about?

6:00PM - At least it was brief. "They say war is hell ..." Silent Hill 5 teaser rolls on screen. The game is being developed simultaneously for PS3 and Xbox 360. Alex will use "full use of his military training" to help find his sibling, lost in Silent Hill. Famed Silent Hill composer will be creating yet another original soundtrack for the sequel.

6:04PM - Hideo Kojima takes the stage. He talks about E3: Many people told him not to go to the newly designed E3. Regardless, he wanted to go to the show. "I love E3. I know it's a business show, but I know it's an important show." He talks about debuting his new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer at E3, and notes: "I hope my E3 will return next year." The crowd applauds.

6:07PM - Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer from Sony press conference plays on the screen. Yes, it still looks good.

6:12PM - Unfortunately, that's the end of the show. Silent Hill 5 was the Konamegaton. Enjoy!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Konami reveals E3 lineup

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360

A vampire, gunner, dancer and water drop go fishing by a playground and they spot a vengeful apparition. That just about sums up Konami's announced E3 2007 lineup:
Most prominent is that PaRappa the Rapper 3 is coming to PlayStation 3, and "none of the that ported PSP nonsense."

Another eye-catcher is that Silent Hill 5 is being developed "by a US team" for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PSP Silent Hill Origins is currently in development by US-based Climax Group. The third teaser from 1UP is more of a no-brainer: "Electronic Arts isn't happy just controlling the NFL -- they want the MLB and NBA, too." We never really thought EA would stop until they had every sport from Football to Segway polo under their belt.

Joystiq's Kyle Orland calculated that Quartermann's rumors "are just as likely to be true as they are false," so flip a coin for Silent Hill 5 and PaRappa 3. Ya gotta believe!

One of our readers, Luigi Hann, produced this killer-toy hybrid, dubbed Mr. Pyramid Head. If you can't guess the toy, perhaps this picture will help. Well, Konami doesn't care: pay your money, take your choice. Silent Hill: The Arcade, unveiled today at AOU 2007, replicates the chilling atmosphere of your darkened living room with... a little black curtain. Sneak between the drapes and you'll find what Famitsu is calling a "gun action shooting game." We'll bring you more details of this intriguing light-gun game just as soon as we get our trousers back on.

Gallery: Silent Hill: The Arcade

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Another Silent Hill film in the cards

There will be a Silent Hill 2 movie, according to director Christopher Gans. In an interview with French-language site DVDrama, Gans hopes that the Roger Avery-penned sequel will retain the visual aesthetic of the first film should he be too busy adapting an Onimusha film to take the director's chair. In his hypotehtical absence, Gans would like a European director to take his stead so as to avoid making the film "too Hollywood" (loose translation).

Of course, some continuity issues run amok if the films follow the same timeline as the games, most notably the inclusion of Pyramid Head; we'll spare you the spoilers and let you read the film's Wiki page if you are curious. The original Silent Hill film, after initial dismay, eventually grew on me as a mediocre horror flick that proved itself better than a multitude of other game adaptations. Gans hopes that sequel will correct the mistakes of the first movie; let's hope it does so we can finally have a decent game-film to hold up as a pillar by which to compare the rest.

[Via Digital Battle]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

From Silent Hill to rules and manners

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Portable, Simulations
Silent Hill producer Akira Yamaoka has apparently changed his focus. His latest project is a DS adaptation of Soichiro Ishihara's Otonaryoku. Translated as "Adult Power," Otonaryoku is a self-help guide to improving relationships through the mastery of rules and manners.

It's unclear how the themes from Otonaryoku will be used in conjunction with Yamaoka's game. We fear it'll be another drab software trainer, undoubtedly a hit in Japan's quirk-obsessed market, but too obscure to reach beyond. But who knows, maybe Yamaoka's creepy imagination will be permitted to bend the rules.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Up to 7,000 PSOne-to-PSP titles by 2007, reports UK PSP Magazine

Filed under: Sony PSP, Retro, Action, Adventure, Online, RPGs

"Riiiiiidge Raaaaacer!" Kaz Hirai's famous declaration at Sony's E3 media breifing might not have garnered much applause, but, according to UK PSP Magazine, there are plenty of other emulated PlayStation titles (for the PSP) that will. These five AAA titles should be available when the emulation service launches:

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VIII

In addition, UK PSP Magazine reports that up to 7,000 PlayStation titles will be available for download by the end of 2007. Say what?! 7,000! Yes folks, it's possible -- Wikipedia: "As of March 2005, there were 7,743 software titles available (this figure counts games released in multiple regions as separate titles)."

Forget PSOne, the PSP has officially become the first, truly portable PlayStation.
