If the main reason you're looking forward to picking up a Nintendo 3DS is because it plays Game Boy games, then you're a silly, silly goose. Plenty of phones can do just that, including those running Windows Phone 7, thanks to a new Silverlight hack from modder Samuel Blanchard. Check it out below!
Continue reading Game Boy emulator demoed on Windows Phone 7

Game Boy emulator demoed on Windows Phone 7 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST. Blitz, an interactive marketing agency, has released its source code and scripts for a Kinect mod that outputs data compatible with Flash, HTML, Unity and Microsoft Silverlight. The company, which helped launch Halo: Waypoint with Microsoft and 343 Industries, explains that the device's standard C++ programming language was too limited for budding Kinect hackers.
Windows Phone 7 isn't just Microsoft's attempt to compete against Apple's iPhone. It's also the introduction of the first portable Xbox platform. During GDC today, we talked to Xbox Live GM Ron Pessner and XNA Game Studio manager Michael Klucher about how games integrate into the mobile platform and what gamers and developers can expect in the future.

For the purpose of this interview, Pessner and Klucher merged into one entity (they spoke over each other a lot!) to answer our questions:

Microsoft plans to separate games that do and don't support Xbox Live functionality on Windows Phone. Are there any concerns that this will turn off indie developers?

Pessner and Klucher: The short answer is "no." The way that we built the Phone and Marketplace experience makes it very easy to search for what you're looking for. With XNA Game Studio 4.0, you can use the same set of tools to build an Xbox Live game or non-Xbox Live game on the platform. The benefit that developers get for working with Game Studio is everything we just described.

We also are very interested in seeing concept submissions from the indie community, and we're out talking to a lot of independent developers. Fortunately, we're working with a lot of these folks in context of the console today, and many of the console titles that have come to us through the Indie Channel or Xbox Live Arcade, we think will also make fantastic mobile titles. So we're reaching back out to these developers and accepting submissions for ideas as a way to help make those Xbox Live titles. It's up to the developer in terms of what they want to do on the platform, but we're really excited with the response we've seen so far.
Continue reading Interview: Microsoft on integrating Xbox Live into Windows Phone 7 Series

Interview: Microsoft on integrating Xbox Live into Windows Phone 7 Series originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 18:00:00 EST. Thanks to Silverlight, Microsoft's answer to Adobe's cross-platform Flash standard, Xbox 360 owners will soon be able to experience the thrill of high-definition interactive advertisements. Speaking to MediaPost, Microsoft's advertising business group director, Sean Alexander, touted the ability for HD ads created using the technology to run in web browsers, on mobile phones and on the fancy-schmancy, multi-touch Surface "table computer" without needing to be re-written.

The tech is to be implemented on 360 "within the year," Alexander said. Though it would likely require a minimal download, we've got the feeling MS will save its roll-out for the next major Dashboard upgrade, rumored to hit this fall. We can't wait.

[Via Edge Online]
Xbox 360 getting 1080p, 5.1 sound ... ads originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 16:45:00 EST. Well, we just got tricked into downloading Silverlight. That's about all the information we were able to glean from a recently-launched teaser site for the upcoming Xbox 360 version of Banjo Kazooie. Once you download Silverlight, all you get is a spinning puzzle piece, a picture of a bear and the knowledge that you just helped Microsoft propagate their Flash competitor. Ilovebees, it is not.

For your surfing pleasure, we've posted the entirety of the site's content above, though we hope that will soon be replaced by pictures, videos and other information from the game, no matter how we may feel about the concept.
Banjo Kazooie gets feature-light homepage originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 17:45:00 EST. We like holding our game manuals and paging through them when launch day comes, it's sort of like a side surprise ... a ritual of sorts. Oh, like we said, Microsoft is promoting their new Silverlight flash-esque web app, so you'll only be able to view the Halo 3 game manual once you install the Silverlight plugin into a compatible internet browser. Yes, it sucks, but the hoops are worth jumping if you need your Halo 3 manual viewing. Commence Silverlight install ... now!

[Thanks, rTwelve]
Page through Halo 3's game manual online originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 Sep 2007 15:15:00 EST.
