It was a motley crew at the Venice Beach, CA skate park on Wednesday, as EA held a public launch party for <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/skate-3"><em>Skate 3</em></a>. Skater kids were running everywhere, checking out the game, taking full advantage of the free food and giveaways, and of course skating, grinding and jumping on the various rails and bowls available to them.<br />
<br />
In among all of the skaters was one Chris "Cuz" Parry -- even as he gave out free copies of the game and limited edition skateboards to raffle winners, he would see a 12-year-old pull some air and respond directly over the PA: "Did you see that little ripper go? That was sick!"<br />
<br />
After he finished the giveaways, we pulled the producer of all three <em>Skate</em> games to the side and asked him about what EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/black-box">Black Box</a> studio has planned post-release.<br />

That, ladies and gentlemen, is a lot of new Games on Demand. We've got three new ones this week and a price drop. As for the new titles, we've got a platformer, military shooter and hardcore skating simulation in <em>Prince of Persia</em>, <em>Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway</em> and <em>Skate 2</em>, respectively. <em>Prince of Persia</em> and <em>Skate 2</em> each run $19.99 in the US, while <em>Brothers in Arms</em> will set you back $29.99. Meanwhile, Rockstar's <em>Table Tennis</em> has seen a 10 dollar price drop to $19.99. As always, pricing and availability vary by region.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em><strong>Resident Evil 5</strong></em></a><br />
I've long been a fan of the <em>Resident Evil </em>series, and while the campaign here has problems and should <em>never</em> be played solo, the Mercenaries mode is what kept me coming back. Those action-packed levels spent trying to survive while running low on ammo and health were some of my most chaotic, yet highly enjoyable, experiences of 2009.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2009/">Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 17:15:00 EST. Apparently EA is working on a sequel to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a>, if the <a href="http://twitter.com/epiclyTRIFE/status/2447024444">Epicly Trife twitter</a> is to be believed. <a href="http://www.epiclytrife.com/">Epicly Trife</a> (<strong>NSFW</strong>) is a site dedicated to skating, and its twitter account said the following: "I just got told 'tonight we gotta celebrate,' one of the bro's got offered to be in <em>SKATE 3</em>." By no means a confirmation, we're still excited, as <em>Skate 2</em> was not only a great sequel, but pretty much the best skating sim around. Plus, it's much easier to get up after falling down four flights of stairs in a video game, as gravity is a much more harsh mistress in real life.<br /><br />We've put in word to EA for comment, but with almost everyone taking the day off today, don't hold your breath for a response. We sure aren't.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5306835/yup-looks-like-therell-be-a-skate-3">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/03/rumor-skate-3-in-the-works/">Rumor: Skate 3 in the works</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Jul 2009 14:00:00 EST. Based on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maloof_family#Skateboarding">highest-pursed skating event</a> in history, the Maloof Money Cup makes its way to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> on July 9 for $3.00 and 240<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" /> on PSN and Xbox Live, respectively. That's one day before the real-life event takes place, and the DLC will mimic the setup of that event pretty closely, through a collection of single-player and online events. These events consist of freeskate, vert, and street contests, and will also provide Xbox gamers with an additional 250 Achievement points to earn. Considering the game's last update was back in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/skate-2s-new-classic-san-van-dlc-is-old-hat/">February</a>, we're surprised EA even remembered it had a skateboarding game.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/maloof-money-cup-dlc-busting-kickflips-in-skate-2-july-9/">Skate 2's Maloof Money Cup DLC busting kickflips on July 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 11:45:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> may offer some excellent variety with its 50+ song soundtrack, but sometimes you just feel like skating to your own tunes. Developer EA Black Box knows this and <a href="http://skate.ea.com/blog.action?blogId=Cuz%20Blog%20-%20march%2018-20090320033840965.xml">has announced</a> that it is finally patching custom soundtracks into the PS3 version of the game.<br /><br />The update, which releases today, will include some minor bug fixes, removal of exploits and other adjustments. You can check out the full list of fixes after the break. Also, for the first song on your custom soundtrack ... go with some real <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0">hardcore thrash metal</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/skate-2-getting-custom-soundtracks-today/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Skate 2 getting custom soundtracks today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/skate-2-getting-custom-soundtracks-today/">Skate 2 getting custom soundtracks today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 14:00:00 EST. Featuring a variety of locales from the first game, <em>Skate 2 </em>players will now be able to shred it up in classic spots such as the Parkade (yes!), the School (<em>italicized yes!</em>), and the Community Center (<strong>bold yes!</strong>), all while utilizing the new tricks found in the sequel. The DLC even places some objects for you to move around in each area, as you can see in the video above.<br />

Update: EA has dished out some screens for the DLC. Hit up the gallery below to check them out.<br /><br />Unless you wanted to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/underachievement-ea-selling-unlock-everything-dlc-for-skate-2/">unlock everything the easy way</a> or <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/free-lotr-conquest-dlc-not-so-free-skate-2-content/">cut some awesome videos</a>, there hasn't been much support in the way of DLC for us <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> fans. That is, until now, as EA has unveiled Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Plaza for the game.<br /><br />The new bit of DLC is available today on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn">PSN</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xblm">XBLM</a> for $5.00 and 400<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" />, respectively, and allows skaters to blunt slide and manual around the centerpiece of Rob's MTV show, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/fantasy_factory/series.jhtml"><em>Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory</em></a>, as well as the surrounding downtown Los Angeles area. Rob was pretty impressed with Black Box's job of recreating the space in the game, as he comments it has all of "the ledges, gaps and rails" of his showpiece, and "more surprises outside the park that both gamers and skaters will enjoy<em>."</em><br /><br />So who's going to shred up Rob's Fantasy Plaza?<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/">Skate 2 DLC Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Plaza</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372541"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/enviro-inside10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372540"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/enviro-inside2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372539"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/dyrdek_fscrook1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372538"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/dyrdek_crook2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2-dlc-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza/#1372537"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/dyrdek_crook1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/skate-2-introduces-rob-dyrdeks-fantasy-plaza-dlc/">Skate 2 introduces 'Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Plaza' DLC [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 11:40:00 EST. The week ending January 31st saw no movement at all in the top two spots on the UK sales charts. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/11/seen-ces-2009-the-lady-fitness-workout-kit/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> maintains its top spot on the UK sales charts for a third week, followed by previous champ <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/cod-world-at-war-tops-uk-charts-for-fifth-week/">Call of Duty: World at War</a>. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> remains at the top of the UK charts for the week ending January 24th, closely followed by its buddy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/call-of-duty-world-at-war"><em>Call of Duty World At War</em></a> at number 2. These two games are trying their best not to let anyone into their special "Top Two" club, despite EA's numerous attempts so far this year. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lord-of-the-rings-conquest"><em>Lord of the Rings: Conquest</em></a>, which showed strong sales when it debuted at number 3 in the charts, has now dropped to number 4.<br /><br />This makes way for EA's newest contender, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a>, which has also managed to reach number 3 in the charts during its debuting week. Strong sales, but not strong enough to beat <em>Call of Duty: World At War, </em>which has been hovering up there for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/cod-world-at-war-tops-uk-charts-for-fifth-week/">over two months</a> now. The strangest story is <em>Wii Fit</em>'s, however, as it has jumped up from 33rd to 1st in the last three weeks. We're not sure what sparked this <em>Wii Fit</em> resurgence ... perhaps being <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7791820.stm">constantly told they're overweight</a> by their government has finally had an impact on UK citizens.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/wii-fit-dominates-uk-charts-skate-2-makes-strong-debut/">Wii Fit dominates UK charts, Skate 2 makes strong debut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 19:00:00 EST. True story: We were going to review <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2/">Skate 2</a></em> ourselves, but we ... no, not we ... <em>I</em>, I Justin McElroy sucked too bad at it to review it. I don't know if my thumbs are just too stupid or what, but as a long-time <em>Tony Hawk</em> fan, I found it hard not to pine for a game that let me press one button and automagically grind on a space dinosaur's boner.<br />
<br />
Here's what more qualified people had to say:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.gameplayer.com.au/gp_documents/Skate-2-Review.aspx">GamePlayer</a> (<strong>95/100</strong>):"<em>Skate 2</em> is a brilliant game. For the most part it takes the fantastic template laid down in the original and injects it with a smartly integrated new move-set, an exciting world to rip to shreds, and the same addictive, unquestionably stylish gameplay which saw the Tony Hawk series bolt for the hills."</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.totally360.com/gameinfo.php?gameid=526&amp;details=reviews&amp;reviewid=226">Totally 360</a> (<strong>90/100</strong>): "Overall the development team should be commended for making another excellent skating title. Everything runs really smoothly and it seems to have come together really well. The new features add on to what was already a fun experience with the original."</li>
    <li><a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/946/946240p1.html">IGN</a> (<strong>83/100</strong>): "Technically an improvement over the first title, and anyone who hadn't yet played the original should skip it and go right to the second. It's a really fun game that allows you to play it the way you want with a control scheme that is second-to-none at the moment. However, it's far from perfect.</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/208608/skate-2/">GamePro</a> (<strong>80/100</strong>): "The first <em>Skate</em> was a refreshing take on virtual skateboarding, so expectations were high for this one. Maybe they were a little too high: <em>Skate 2</em> doesn't quite deliver the revolutionary skating experience that we were all hoping it would be."</li>

It won't instill gamers with the same <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/yes-there-is-a-boycott-of-battlefield-bad-company/">red-faced anger</a> as EA's fizzled plan to offer for-pay weapons in <em>Battlefield: Bad Company</em>; instead, the newly released "Time is Money Pack" for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2">Skate 2</a> </em>will simply make those who buy it feel varying degrees of guilt, regret and perhaps even <em>fear</em>. That's because, for 400<img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /> ($5) on XBLM or $4.99 on the PlayStation Store, owners of the game can literally pay their way past the effort it would take to unlock everything in the game.<br />
<br />
The "everything" in question includes "all locations, skaters and gear that can be earned by playing through <em>Skate 2</em>'s career and online modes," according to the DLC's description. So, basically, you're paying for access to content that's <em>already in the game</em>. Or, to put it another way, you're paying five bucks for a <em>cheat code</em>. A <em>downloadable code</em>, if you will. Next thing you know, people will be paying for good grades and -- who knows -- even Senate seats. Oh, wait ...<br />

Video games are continuing the battle back from the brink of doom this week, with the release of one of 2009's most promising titles yet: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a>. We'll have some more detailed thoughts for you soon, but suffice to say it's definitely worth your time, if only to congratulate EA for having the stones to release a big-name title in the cold, bitter darkness of winter.<br /><br />Also of note is early PS2 contender for 2009 Name of the Year, <em>AR Tonelico 2: Melody Of Metafalica</em>. We were going to Google it for more info, but we were fairly sure we'd end up on some sort of watch list.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/19/new-games-this-week-skate-2-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New games this week: Skate 2 edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/19/new-games-this-week-skate-2-edition/">New games this week: Skate 2 edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 08:00:00 EST. EA continues its January release schedule with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> which, no doubt, will be a bit better than <em>Lord of the Rings: Conquest</em> turned out to be. Hopefully. Asia continues to play catch-up, as ever, with <em>Prince of Persia</em> and <em>WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009</em>. Here's the full release list:<br /><br /><strong>US Games</strong>

PS3 games are region free. Not that it matters this week, but if you're feeling particularly barmy you could always import a version of <em>Skate 2</em> from abroad. It'll still work. Though any downloadable content would need to be downloaded from the appropriate region's PSN Store, so it's probably best not to. Release dates are constantly subject to change, so confirm with your local retailer before you leave the house.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/18/worldwide-ps3-releases-for-the-week-of-january-18th/">Worldwide PS3 releases for the week of January 18th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 18 Jan 2009 12:00:00 EST. It looks like the 'installation saga' persists into 2009. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a>, which is due for release next week in both North America and Europe, will feature a 2GB install. It's not certain whether it's mandatory or optional, but <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/01/12/skate-2-ps3-requires-2gb-of-harddrive-space/">MTV Multiplayer</a> suggests you should clear up some space nonetheless -- that is if you've been eyeing more time on the digital half-pipe. A demo for the game is said to appear on the store update this week, so perhaps if you've got space for a demo ... you've got space for the install.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/13/skate-2-has-2gb-install/">Skate 2 has 2GB install</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. Thus, we also know that you were devastated to find out the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/skate-2-demo-grinds-the-rails-onto-the-xblm/">demo</a> doesn't <em>have</em> online modes. We'd like to tell you that we've magically enabled online play so you could try it out, but you'll just have to settle for a <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/44044.html">developer diary video</a> instead. In said dev diary, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> online producer Brian Lindley discusses the various online modes. Among these modes are Hall of Meat, in which players compete for the most damaging bail. Players can also engage in Freeskate Activities, which are simple challenges in which all online players can compete. Finally, there's Create A Spot, which allows players to create their own custom skating spots, which can then be uploaded for other players to try.<br /><br />Especially neat is that players can jump from the single player game world straight to online at any time right from the pause menu. Very slick. <em>Skate 2</em> debuts later this month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/skate-2-dev-diary-talks-online-modes/">Skate 2 dev diary talks online modes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:30:00 EST. <strong>Update:</strong> Our fanboy army has informed us that the <em>Skate 2</em> demo is actually a 1.51GB download and DOES NOT include online multiplayer as promised. Bum.<br /><br />Freshly available on the Xbox Live Marketplace is EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/07/ea-confirms-thursdays-skate-2-demo-release/">promised</a> <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/0ddf0001-0000-4000-8000-0000454188aa"><em>Skate 2</em> demo</a>. The free <strike>2GB</strike> 1.51GB demo download will give gamers a pretty good sampling of what <em>Skate 2</em> has to offer, including player customization, single player modes and up to four player online versus. <em>Skate 2</em> will grind into retail and be available worldwide on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/skate-2-cements-january-21-2009-release/">January 23rd</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/skate-2-demo-grinds-the-rails-onto-the-xblm/">Skate 2 demo grinds the rails onto the XBLM [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:45:00 EST. EA's <em>Skate 2</em> will be arriving on the PlayStation Store next week. Strange, considering the demo is available on Xbox Live this week. Maybe EA is playing console favorites again? (PSN has been home to demos of <em>Lord of the Rings Conquest</em>, <em>The Simpsons Game</em> and others earlier than on Xbox Live.) Regardless of the one week delay, PS3 fans can expect a lot to do in the demo, especially as it includes access to two online "Party Play" modes: Thrasher's Hall of Meat and Spot Battle.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/07/skate-2-demo-arrives-on-playstation-store-next-week/">Skate 2 demo arrives on PlayStation Store next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 21:18:00 EST. We tend to think of demos as free gifts from the gaming overlords, which would make the <em>Skate 2 </em>demo coming on Thursday to Xbox Live a gift<em> within </em>a gift, like a Hickory Farms sampler wrapped in a Snuggie. Just for downloading the demo and <a href="http://live.xbox.com/en-US/Flows/BeginFlow.ashx?workflow=Campaign&amp;RegId=395ac838-4c52-48d8-9beb-fe7bc9370fe7">registering here</a>, you could win MS points and, curiously, one of six custom <em>Skate 2</em> skateboards, which should look great sitting idly in your garage.<br /><br />Thanks to the Thursday placement, we're assuming this'll pop up simultaneously on PSN, just without all the free prizes.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/18478/Skate-2-Demo-This-Week/">Team Xbox</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/05/skate-2-demo-coming-thursday/">Skate 2 demo coming Thursday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Jan 2009 20:00:00 EST. <div align="left">According to a new Xbox.com listing for an upcoming <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/s/skate2/downloadandwin/default.htm"><em>Skate 2</em> Download &amp; Win</a> giveaway, a fresh <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> game demo will be available for download off the Xbox Live Marketplace come Thursday, January 8th. Maybe earlier.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />The Download &amp; Win page explains that, in order to enter the giveaway, gamers must first register then "download the free <em>Skate 2</em> demo between January 8 - 15." A statement that (thanks to our unnaturally high intellectual thought process) makes us believe that a <em>Skate 2</em> demo will be downloadable via the XBLM on January 8th. Oh, and if the demo does release on the 8th, be sure to enter the Download &amp; Win to score some nifty skate prizes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/01/rumor-skate-2-demo-releasing-january-8th/">Rumor: Skate 2 demo releasing January 8th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Jan 2009 09:30:00 EST. EA's <em>Skate </em>franchise which has a sequel coming out next year and <em>Tony Hawk</em>, a franchise that has kinda lost its luster over the years. Recognizing this, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><em>Skate 2</em></a> devs are adamant about not being like Mr. Hawk.<br /><br />Talking with <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/12/09/skate-avoiding-tony-hawk-syndrome/">MTV Multiplayer</a>, <em>Skate 2 </em>associate producer Shaun Laker made it clear that they aren't going down the same path that the <em>Tony Hawk</em> franchise did, avoiding such fate by simply listening to their community. "As long as we keep putting out great games and don't rush it out and polish it and make sure we're listening to the community and hearing what they're having to say [we will avoid that]," explained Laker, adding "we listen to the community and know what they're asking for and respond to that."<br /><br />Keeping a franchise fresh by listening to a game's passionate community, implementing changes and serving up a polished product. Who would have thought something like that would work?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/skate-devs-have-a-plan-to-not-be-like-tony-hawk/">Skate devs have a plan to not be like Tony Hawk</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 12:15:00 EST. <p>For those that you haven't jumped into PS3's video magazine, <em>Qore</em>, you'll have your chance this week. Episode 7 will be available on the PlayStation Store this Thursday -- and best of all, it'll be free. This month's issue will focus on <em>Skate 2</em> (read our preview <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/joystiq-hands-on-skate-2/">here</a>) and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/flock"><em>Flock</em></a>. A <em>Killzone 2</em> theme will also be included with the issue.<br />
<br />
We're wondering if subscribers will get an extra issue appended to their purchase, considering this issue is free for all. If not, annual subscribers can at least celebrate their exclusive access to a <em>Flock</em> demo.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/03/qore-episode-7-is-free/">Qore Episode 7 is free</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 13:49:00 EST. After years of tired <em>Tony Hawk</em> sequels, 2007's <em>Skate</em> was a refreshing change of pace. Black Box's interpretation of the sport was a far more realistic one. The innovative "flick" control scheme better emulated the experience of performing ollies, nollies, grabs and assorted flip tricks. Players were dropped into the fictional city of San Vanelona, a massive virtual playground where anything and everything could become the starting point of a skating line. So how will Black Box attempt to improve the experience in its follow-up, <em>Skate 2?</em> By giving you new things to do <em>without</em> your skateboard.<br />
<br />
<em>Skate 2</em> no longer glues your character to the board. With a simple press of a button, you can get off your board and start exploring the environment. New San Vanelona is a mix of old and <span style="font-style: italic;">new</span>, and the city begs to be explored. No longer will you have to attempt to "glitch" the system to get to interesting skate points. You'll be able to walk up a set of stairs, for example. You'll be able to jump on top of a ledge. It's a simple addition, but it allows the world to be explored in far greater depth than before.<br />

Remember not to spend all your money during Black Friday -- a good number of games are scheduled to release in the first part of 2009. <em>Skate 2</em>, EA's follow-up to 2007's innovative skateboarding game, is making a return to the PS3 on January 21st (23rd in Europe).<br /><br />There are a couple of big new features in <em>Skate 2</em>, like the ability to get off one's board and traverse to areas previous inaccessible. Skaters can grab objects and set up new, crazy lines down their favorite routes. In addition, an <a href="http://www.skate.ea.com/">online graphics creator</a> gives you the ability to add your own custom textures to your boards. Pre-order the game to get access to the "Throwback Pack," a collection of retro accessories and clothing.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/skate-2-lands-a-january-release-date/">Skate 2 lands a January release date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 11:10:00 EST. Just as your head begins to clear from downing your seventh pitcher of holiday eggnog, Electronic Arts announced plans to push off and catch a mad vert when <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2">Skate 2</a></em> nails its retail landing in January. The sequel will do a frontside 360 in North America on January 21, while skateboarders elsewhere will be able to get their trick on two days later on January 23. <br />
<br />
Next month EA will also launch a <em>Skate 2</em> <a href="http://www.skate.ea.com/">web application</a>, creatively titled "Graphics Creator," which will let players create customized graphics for their in-game decks and clothing. Additionally, would-be shredders in North America who pre-order <em>Skate 2</em> will grab a code to unlock a "Throwback Pack" that will allow access to retro accessories, gestures and clothing. When you bail from a botched nosegrind, at least you'll look good in your <em>Skate or Die</em> shirt.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/skate-2-to-grind-north-american-retail-shelves-january-21/">Skate 2 to grind North American retail shelves January 21</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST. While rifling through their early retail copies of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Mirrors-Edge/">Mirror's Edge</a></em>, IGN has discovered an advertisement that revealed <em>Skate 2</em> will be released sometime in January 2009. Included with the retail copies of the upcoming first-person PK title was a sell-sheet that promoted <em>Need for Speed: Undercover</em> on one side and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Skate-2/">Skate 2</a></em> on the other. According to <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/925/925925p1.html">IGN</a>, the <em>Skate 2</em> side included a small tag in the bottom-corner that revealed, "Coming in January 2009."<br /><br />Electronic Arts has since confirmed the timing to IGN but has not placed a specific date on the return to San Vanelona. At least we know it's soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/skate-2-to-ollie-stores-in-january-2009/">Skate 2 to ollie stores in January 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 21:50:00 EST. <div align="left">Unhappy with the quality of <em>Skate</em> for the PS3? The producers apparently felt the same way -- developer Black Box has stated <em>Skate 2</em>'s lead platform will be the PS3 -- this is due to the inferior version of <em>Skate</em> PS3 owners received when the Xbox 360 was the lead platform. For <em>Skate 2</em>, producer Jason DeLong and his team are aiming for the following: "The goal is that if you put both versions side-by-side, you will not be able to tell the difference."</div>

<br />Are Scott Steinberg's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/31/scea-vp-ps3-native-dev-means-better-looking-360-games/">words from back in July coming true</a>? Hopefully more third-party developers will choose the PS3 as the lead platform from now on to ensure both versions are on par with one another.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&amp;newsid=32355">MaxConsole</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/skate-2s-lead-platform-will-be-the-ps3/">Skate 2's lead platform will be the PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Oct 2008 11:40:00 EST. Anyway, give the trailer a watch and tell us what your early <em>skate 2 </em>impressions are.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamestooge.com/2008/08/04/skate-2-trailer-developer-interview/">Game Stooge</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/video-you-too-can-skate-2-too/">Video: You too can skate 2 too</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Aug 2008 11:30:00 EST. You used the analog sticks to pull off tricks -- it worked fairly well. It wasn't a blockbuster or a perfect title, but it did what it set out to do and now it's planning to do it again. This time, it might correct all the little flaws and become that great title. That said, <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/37912.html?r=1&amp;type=wmv">this interview</a> explains how <span style="font-style: italic;">Skate 2</span> plans to keep the skateboarding as realistic as possible, along with some footage. EA's reentry into the skateboarding genre with the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate"><span style="font-style: italic;">Skate</span></a> was viewed by many as an uphill challenge. Its last attempt - the ill-received <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Sk8er"><span style="font-style: italic;">Street Sk8er</span></a> on PS1 nearly 10 years earlier - and the fact that Activision's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tony-hawk"><span style="font-style: italic;">Tony Hawk </span></a>franchise was the firmly seated king of the hill didn't help. Still, the game's innovative trick controls and return to a more "pure" skateboarding experience proved a huge success, outselling that year's Tony Hawk title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/skate-outsells-tony-hawk-nearly-2-to-1/">nearly two-to-one </a>by some accounts.<br />
<br />
Now EA Blackbox is looking to recreate that success in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-2"><span style="font-style: italic;">Skate 2</span></a> ... not through the usual addition of modes and various novelties, but via some basic evolution of the gameplay fundamentals of the original game. This sequel is about two things: an all-new, modifiable environment to skate in and more ways to show off in it. We went hands-on with <span style="font-style: italic;">Skate 2</span> to bring you our first gameplay impressions, which you can continue reading after the break.<br />

Nintendo Wii owners will get a chance to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-it"><em>Skate It</em> </a>this fall, but EA hasn't forgotten that those with current-gen <em>HD</em> consoles are also ready for their own follow-up to the game that made the last <em>Tony Hawk</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/skate-outsells-tony-hawk-nearly-2-to-1/">look like a turkey</a>. <a href="http://www.ea.com/skate/theater.jsp?media=videos&amp;mediaID=wh_skater">Two new videos</a> posted to the <a href="http://www.ea.com/skate/home.jsp">official <em>Skate</em> site</a> -- "What happened to that Dude?" and "What happened to San Vanelona?" -- feature skaters talking up players' feats in the first game and about how the city has changed since then, before heading into some brief gameplay clips and a teaser logo for <em>Skate 2</em> (above).<br /><br />According to the skaters in the clips, five years have passed in the gameworld -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate/"><em>Skate</em></a>'s fictional city of San Vanelona -- and large corporations have spearheaded a big-time crackdown on skating. They talk of harsher punishment than mere tickets and how obstacles have been put in place near rails and other prime trick spots to discourage skaters. Still, the second clip shows a skater and his board perched defiantly atop a concrete block with a "No Skateboarding" sign affixed to it. So, skateboarding <em>is</em> a crime after all -- at least in <em>Skate 2</em> -- and it looks like you'll be sticking it to the man (in this case, big business) a la <em>Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure</em>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2/">Skate 2</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2/#958563"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/skate2.08.04.08.05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2/#958562"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/skate2.08.04.08.04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2/#958561"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/skate2.08.04.08.03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2/#958560"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/skate2.08.04.08.02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/skate-2/#958559"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/skate2.08.04.08.01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><a href="http://www.ea.com/skate/theater.jsp?media=videos&amp;mediaID=wh_skater"></a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/skate-bored-ea-teases-skate-2-gameplay-twist/">'Skate' bored? Well, they don't appeal to everyone under the sun, but there are those out there that care about 'em, so here we go with the niche sequels. EA obviously <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/30526/Skate-2-coming-to-360-and-PS3">got wind</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/no-console-tony-hawk-in-08-we-lament/">Tony's passing</a>, and has now announced that they have a sequel to <em>skate</em> in the works, but haven't given any other details than that. Seems they felt the need to acknowledge the death of their rival in some small way.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/67228">second game</a> marks the return of the <em>Formula 1</em> Racing franchise, with Codemasters using their expierience on <em>DiRT</em> and <em>Race Driver: GRID</em> to bring out an F1 game based on the 2009 season. <br /><br />Read, <em><a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/30526/Skate-2-coming-to-360-and-PS3">skate 2</a><br /></em>Read, <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/67228"><em>Formula 1 Racing</em></a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/several-niche-sequels-confirmed-skate-f1-racing/">Several Niche Sequels Confirmed; skate, F1 Racing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 May 2008 23:45:00 EST.
