EA <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/16/scee-renews-uefa-sponsorship-to-last-until-2012/">renewed the license</a> for the franchise long enough to make a 2012 version. However, there won't actually be a standalone UEFA release this year -- instead, EA is putting out UEFA Euro 2012 on April 24 as a DLC pack for <em>FIFA 12</em>. EA still <a href="http://investor.ea.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=660332">refers to it</a> as the "officially licensed videogame," but it's a downloadable expansion.<br /><br />Why relegate the UEFA to expansion pack status? Mostly because <em>FIFA 12</em> has been so popular, EA communications manager Steve Frost told <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/167600/Why_is_EA_Sports_UEFA_Euro_2012_not_a_standalone_soccer_release.php">Gamasutra</a>. "We felt this was the best way to extend that experience and deliver fresh new content to our fans," he said. Releasing UEFA as DLC helps keep players engaged in <em>FIFA</em> longer.<br /><br />"We expect that some fans who may not have <em>FIFA 12</em> will want to play Euro 2012 and therefore purchase both," he said later in the interview, "but the bigger opportunity for us is to offer our loyal and passionate FIFA fans new content." Chances are, if you like soccer, you'd be interested in FIFA anyway, so this seems like a win-win.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/ea-explains-why-uefa-soccer-is-now-fifa-12-dlc/">EA explains why UEFA Soccer is now FIFA 12 DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 18:30:00 EST. Video games have a rich history of vaguely emulating sports while being subject to the limitations of the systems we play them on. Sports gamers are accustomed to repetitive animations, unnatural movement, and broken mechanics, all ripe for players to take competitive advantage of.<br />
<br />
Somewhere along the lines, we lost the authenticity of sports in our video games. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fifa-12"><em>FIFA 12</em></a> does a magnificent job of depicting the sport of soccer in video game form, with all of its beautiful and natural imperfections.<br />

Last Saturday, the Chicago Fire played a fairly disheartening game against the Seattle Sounders at home, though the proceedings were brightened significantly by a <em>delightful</em>, Mario-themed <a href="http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/blog.php?s=9e14b114de13a5a254e686f35c37cf1b&amp;b=9963">tifo display</a>. We're not sure what Mario has to do with the two clubs, but -- oh, wait! Fireballs! <em>Of course</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/mario-themed-tifo-display-heats-up-chicago-fire-soccer-game/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mario-themed tifo display heats up Chicago Fire soccer game</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/mario-themed-tifo-display-heats-up-chicago-fire-soccer-game/">Mario-themed tifo display heats up Chicago Fire soccer game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 22:30:00 EST. Guess what it's about! No, it's not about learning how to cultivate a hive, that's "Goal: a Beekeeper." This is about controlling the goalie in soccer games. Be a Goalkeeper allows you to control the goalie using three levels of AI assistance (ranging from "none" to "some," basically).<br />
<br />
Now that players can take control of that position, the possibility of full, 11 vs. 11 online play is opened up, a functionality that EA touts in the stylish trailer after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/fifa-11-features-11-vs-11-online-play-thanks-to-be-a-goalkeepe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>FIFA 11 features 11 vs. 11 online play thanks to 'Be a Goalkeeper'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/fifa-11-features-11-vs-11-online-play-thanks-to-be-a-goalkeepe/">FIFA 11 features 11 vs. 11 online play thanks to 'Be a Goalkeeper'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 01:00:00 EST. During E3,<span style="font-style: italic;"> </span><em>FIFA 11 </em>producer David Rutter briefly demonstrated the game's new "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/fifa-soccer-11-hits-the-pitch-this-fall-with-personality/">Personality+</a>" framework, which aims to better recreate each player's real-life abilities and personality in the game. Using an early build of the game, Rutter showed how Arsenal defender Sol Cambell has been reduced to a lumbering dribbler -- at least compared to teammate Andrey Arshavin, a nimble-footed midfielder. By contrast, Cambell's tackle zone had been made far more expansive than Arshavin's. Aside from these obvious skill tweaks, it remains to be seen how much individual "personality"<em> </em> will factor into the gameplay.<br />
<br />
Actually, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/FIFA-Soccer-11/"><em>FIFA 11</em></a></em> will allow players to add a bit of their own <em>personal touch</em> to the overall presentation. Rutter confirmed that the game will support custom audio settings, allowing players to upload sound clips -- chants, music tracks, <em>90,000 resounding vuvuzelas</em> -- into the game and set them to play in accordance with various events in the match.<br />

You <em>could</em> watch actual World Cup soccer games on TV this weekend, but wouldn't you rather dive into <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/2010-fifa-world-cup-south-africa">2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa</a></em> instead? Good thing then that <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002WEZ1GA/amazon0b53-20/">Amazon</a>'s offering up a 20 percent discount on the Xbox and Wii versions, making <em>right now</em> the moment to live out your dream of seeing Uruguay finally take the cup.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/12/2010-fifa-world-cup-south-africa-20-off-at-amazon/">2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa 20% off at Amazon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Jun 2010 22:00:00 EST. Indie developer Psyonix, Inc. recently sent out a press release announcing a half-off sale for its wordy PSN title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supersonic-acrobatic-rocket-powered-battle-cars"><em>Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars</em></a>. Until June 15, folks living in NTSC territories can purchase the game from the PlayStation Store for just $5 -- a promotion that's being offered in anticipation of the upcoming 2010 World Cup. <br />
<br />
We wonder if the World Cup will return the favor, and introduce a sudden death, vehicle-based round of soccer into its proceedings. If so, <em>we might actually watch it</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/25/supersonic-acrobatic-rocket-powered-battle-cars-half-off-on-psn/">Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars half-off on PSN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 May 2010 14:15:00 EST. How convenient, then, that Ubisoft today announced <em>Pure Futbol, </em>coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this May. As you can see in the trailer above, the game looks to take soccer from the stadium to the local park, while at the same time keeping the professional players and losing referees for (as far as we can tell) a more arcade-style sports game feel.<br />
<br />
<em>Pure Futbol</em>'s announcement release corroborates our take on the trailer with a tagline that reads, "No referees, no rules - just soccer." It also further details your choice of footers, elaborating that "230 elite soccer players, 17 international teams, and 17 legendary players" are included, though you can also sculpt your own star from bits and polygons and shared or trade him with friends online. Will we finally be able to live out the dream of playing as a team full of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/assassins-creed-2">Ezio Auditore</a> lookalikes, engaged in fierce battle with a team full of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia">Prince of Persia</a></em> lookalikes? For now, all we can do is hope.<br />

Having just announced <em>Inazuma Eleven 3: Challenge of the World!!</em>, Level-5 has yet to offer many details about the plot or gameplay changes. <br />
<br />
What <em>is</em> known is that the game contains a "Super Link" feature that allows players to import characters from <em>Inazuma Eleven 2</em>. We hope, then, that <em>Inazuma Eleven 2</em> comes out in the West before <em>Inazuma Eleven 3</em> (which is out this summer in Japan), and we hope that all of these things happen in our lifetimes.<br />

<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fifa-10"> FIFA 10</a></em> has already found its way into 2.2 million UK homes, making it competition for the "biggest-selling game in the series so far," according to an <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/37354/FIFA-10-passes-2m-mark-in-the-UK">MCV UK</a> report. With today's earlier announcement of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/free-fifa-online-kicks-off-closed-pc-beta-in-february/">free-to-play <em>FIFA</em></a> and the recent unveiling of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/ea-sports-fifa-world-cup-2010-south-africa-announced/">FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa</a></em>, <em>and now this</em>, we're quite considering naming it "FIFA Week" here on Joystiq. <br />
<br />
And we're willing to bet that EA Sports marketing manager Trevor Uzice would be a big fan of that, especially considering he believes that "there's no denying <em>FIFA 10</em> is the best football game ever." While we're not sure that the (admittedly impressive) sales numbers corroborate his sentiments, it's always nice to see marketing putting its most outlandish spin on any piece of news.<br />

According to <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2010/01/12/maybe-well-see-inazuma-eleven-in-north-america/">Siliconera</a>, the US trademark crucially covers "video game discs," along with arcade machines and, er, cellphone straps. There's no telling if Level-5 will move beyond a mere trademark and carry out its goal of bringing the game to America, nor is there telling which of the <em>Inazuma Eleven</em> games are under consideration (none of the cellphone strap blogs have to worry about this stuff).<br />
<br />
We'd normally be inclined to share some of our own long-winded theories, but the last thing you need is for us bore you with our ceaseless puntification. <br />

Super Hyper Dimensional Mega Games has a good idea about how to market an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@iphone">iPhone</a> game: put a bunch of stuff people like in it. Its upcoming title, <a href="http://www.prozombiesoccer.com/"><em>Pro Zombie Soccer</em></a>, combines all of the drama of one of the world's top sports with the undead, gnawing fury of your favorite zombie film. It's kinda like the guy who accidentally discovered peanut butter and chocolate go great together. Man, we <em>love</em> that guy.<br />
<br />
Head past the break for a trailer from the upcoming game, which goes out of its way to also include <em>heavenly satellite death lazers</em>. Now how's that for effective marketing?<br />

Look, we know you Europeans love your <strike>soccer</strike> football, but <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/konami-ships-3-million-for-pes-2010-launch">GI.biz</a> is reporting that Konami has shipped three million copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pro-evolution-soccer-2010/"><em>PES 2010</em></a> to the region today. <em>Three million</em> -- that's like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/september-npd-xbox-360-takes-the-lead-halo-3-to-thank/"><em>Halo 3</em> numbers</a>, people! <br /><br />While we're willing to bet you Euros are chomping at the bit for more pitch play, we're curious if <em>PES 2010</em> needs such a hefty initial shipment -- especially since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fifa-10"><em>FIFA 10</em></a> has been out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/ea-fifa-10-is-fastest-selling-sports-game-ever/">and selling really well</a>. Have footy fans had their needs fulfilled? Apparently not, since Konami expects the game to "become a million-selling title at launch."<br /><br />"Global sales for the <em>PES</em> series to date are over 55.5 million, and we expect a very strong performance from what is easily the best PES in a long, long time," says Martin Schneider, Konami's European marketing director. He credits the rise in quality and buzz to the latest iteration to the fans, whom he expects to stick around as Konami starts charging toward DLC for the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/24/konami-extremely-confident-in-pes-2010-ships-3-million-to-europ/">Konami extremely confident in PES 2010, ships 3 million to Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Oct 2009 00:00:00 EST. Shingo Takatsuka, the progenitor of the long-running <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pro-evolution-soccer"><em>Pro Evolution Soccer</em></a> series, recently had a few choice words <a href="http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/103/1030821p1.html">to share with IGN</a> on the subject of incorporating motion control into the franchise. Though the producer of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/16/fifa-producer-cautious-on-natal-ps3-motion-wand-use/"><em>that other soccer game</em></a> has stated his indifference to motion control schemes, Takatsuka explained Konami is highly intrigued by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-natal">Project Natal</a> and the heretofore <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/05/rumor-playstation-motion-controller-codenamed-sphere/">"officially" unnamed</a> PlayStation Motion Controller -- intrigued to the extent that he's "looking at integrating those devices into our games very aggressively."<br /> <br /> As we all know, soccer is the most fatiguing activity any human can participate in, so we expect that a Natal-ized version of <em>PES</em> would be appropriately taxing. However, given the sport's limited employment of <em>hands</em>, we'd be curious to see how Sony's motion-sensing peripheral would be utilized. There are few pieces of gaming hardware we'd outright refuse to give a fair shot, but <em>shoe adapters</em> might just be beyond our capacity for humiliation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/05/konami-aggressively-looking-into-motion-control-for-pes-series/">Konami 'aggressively' looking into motion control for PES series</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Oct 2009 13:00:00 EST. Imagine our excitement upon seeing <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/09/10/demo-fifa-soccer-10.aspx">Major Nelson</a> announce that the demo for footy fiesta <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fifa-10"><em>FIFA 10</em></a> was available on XBLM. Now, imagine our excitement being boiled like a <em>Fatal Attraction</em> bunny as we discovered the demo wasn't available in Japan ... or North America. That's outrageous! We live and breathe for the sport!<br /> <br /> Apparently, the excluded regions will have to wait before taking their linebacker down the field and scoring a run in the other guy's hoop. The whole thing makes us want to scream like an athlete on an EA Sports cover.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-10-360/">FIFA 10 (360/PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-10-360/#2188414"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/fifa10_seriea_01_wm_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-10-360/#2188415"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/fifa10_seriea_03_wm_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-10-360/#2188416"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/fifa10_seriea_05_wm_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-10-360/#2188417"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/fifa10_seriea_04_wm_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-10-360/#2198493"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/fifa10_blanco_headers_nt_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/fifa-10-demo-up-on-xblm-except-for-you-america/">FIFA 10 demo up on XBLM (except for you, America)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 13:00:00 EST. We've been known to dabble in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fifa"><em>FIFA</em></a> game from time to time, though cover athletes aren't really our <em>forte</em>, if you will. Rather than address our ignorance dead-on, we'll simply tell you that Frank Lampard of Chelsea, Theo Walcott of Arsenal and Wayne Rooney of Manchester United are donning the cover of this year's footballer. <br />
<br />
Believe it or not, the game will feature more than just players from English teams. (Yes, we're <em>just</em> as shocked as you by that possibility.) Ah, soccer ... the sport of kings. Oh, wait. That's chess. Or maybe that's the game of kings. Anyhow, we're talking about soccer. Well, soccer here in America, "football" to the rest of the known world. Ubisoft has a new soccer game coming out for the Wii called <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/academy-of-champions"><em>Academy of Champions</em></a>, and despite the awkward combination of Pele (a legend) and Joel McHale (a goofball) at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/joystiq-live-from-ubisofts-e3-2009-keynote/">Ubisoft's E3 presser</a>, the game is actually fun. Especially when you're playing with friends.<br /><br />You can see new screenshots from the game below before heading beyond the break to read our hands-on and see the new trailer for <em>Academy of Champions</em>. It's a bit like a Hogwart's for soccer, except without all the death and killing and such. But is there magic? Oh yes ... you can actually play as Sam Fisher in full-stealth mode. Find out more inside.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/">Academy of Champions</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2071731"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/aoc_e3_artwork_pele-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2025959"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/aoc052002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2025958"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/aoc052009_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2071714"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/academyofchampions_soccer_logo_-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2071722"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/aoc_a3_artwork_scythemore-class-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/13/hands-on-academy-of-champions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on: Academy of Champions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/13/hands-on-academy-of-champions/">Hands-on: Academy of Champions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 13 Jun 2009 11:30:00 EST. The <em>defining characteristic</em> of soccer is that the hands are not used. With that in mind, we can't <em>wait</em> to see how the new <em>Academy of Champions</em> arcade soccer game is going to make use of the device. It also supports the Balance Board, but that's a lot easier to figure out.<br /><br /><em>Academy of Champions</em> is a new Wii soccer game that will feature soccer stars Pel&eacute; and Mia Hamm, as well as that kid with the weird-looking face. The game features a "rich, story-driven adventure" taking place in a fictitious soccer-centered school. Players "improve their skills, recruit new team members and build the best possible squad," making the game sound rather like a soccer-themed RPG (which isn't <em>that</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/inazuma-eleven">outlandish</a>).<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/">Academy of Champions</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2071731"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/aoc_e3_artwork_pele-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2025959"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/aoc052002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2025958"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/aoc052009_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2071714"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/academyofchampions_soccer_logo_-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/academy-of-champions/#2071722"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/aoc_a3_artwork_scythemore-class-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/ubisoft-to-answer-the-question-of-how-motionplus-enhanced-soccer/">Ubisoft to answer the question of how MotionPlus-enhanced soccer works</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 May 2009 16:30:00 EST. <br /> Whether you're a fan or not, soccer is the world's most popular sport. So, for a console that has seen a lot of success from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports">sports games</a>, the Wii is probably going to see some frantic action in the sales department for <em>Pro Evolution Soccer 2009</em>! Well, maybe we're getting ahead of ourselves. <br /><br />Joking aside, the latest trailer and <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/wii/proevolutionsoccer2009">word around the campfire</a> points to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Konami/">Konami</a> hitting the nail on the head with another great installment of the soccer franchise for the Wii. Interested? <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Pro-Evolution-Soccer-2009/">Pro Evolution Soccer 2009</a></em> is in stores now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/31/pes-2009-trailer-includes-footage-of-digial-soccer/">PES 2009 trailer includes footage of 'digital soccer'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 Mar 2009 00:00:00 EST. <em>Professor Layton</em>/<em>Dragon Quest IX</em> developers Level-5 held their "Level-5 Vision 2008" event this week, revealing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/level-5-has-big-plans-for-ds-enlists-aid-of-studio-ghibli/">new</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/two-more-new-ds-games-from-level-5/">games</a> for PSP, DS, and mobile phones, as well as the previously announced <em>Inazuma Eleven Break,</em> a spinoff of their DS soccer-RPG series. For some reason, they didn't specify what platform <em>Inazuma Eleven Break</em> was to be released on. <br /><br />We find this odd -- and we're <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/inazuma-eleven-headed-to-consoles-wii-likely/">continuing</a> to write here about this unknown-platform game -- because these screens look <em>very</em> Wii-like. It could be a very cheap 360/PS3 game, maybe, or a really nice-looking PS2 game. Maybe it <em>is</em> Wii, but they don't want to go into details yet, because they want to spring a "Surprise! It's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/WiiWare/">WiiWare</a>!" on us. In any case, we shouldn't expect news on <em>Inazuma Eleven Break</em>'s platform until 2009, according to Level-5.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/26/level-5-releases-first-inazuma-eleven-break-screens-still-refus/">Level-5 releases first Inazuma Eleven Break screens, still refuses to reveal platform</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Sep 2008 14:30:00 EST. Surprise! A new system is being added to the Japanese Virtual Console lineup -- the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperGrafx">NEC SuperGrafx</a>! Except Nintendo and Hudson aren't treating it like a new system, and are instead treating SuperGrafx games as 800-point PC Engine games, with no other indication of the system of origin. The lack of fanfare <em>may</em> be related to the fact that the whole released SuperGrafx library is seven games. In October, what may be the best-known SuperGrafx game, a quite good version of <em>Ghouls 'n Ghosts</em>, will be available for download. <br /><br />Also good news: another Kunio sports game, known in the US as <em>Nintendo World Cup</em>; <em>Castlevania II</em>, a year after the US got it; and <em>Enduro Racer</em> (yay!). The full list is posted after the break!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/26/supergrafx-game-leads-japanese-virtual-console-lineup-for-octobe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Supergrafx game leads Japanese Virtual Console lineup for October</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/26/supergrafx-game-leads-japanese-virtual-console-lineup-for-octobe/">Supergrafx game leads Japanese Virtual Console lineup for October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Sep 2008 12:38:00 EST. I'm in official <em>PANIC MODE EXTREME</em> over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mega-man-9"><em>Mega Man 9</em></a>. I basically freak out every time I see it or am otherwise reminded of its existence. A brand new 8-bit-style <em>Mega Man </em>game, that <em>isn't</em> a spinoff of any kind, is both <em>far</em> too good to be true and the weirdest thing Capcom's done in years. And it reminded me of <em>other</em> weird <em>Mega Man </em>games Capcom's put out over the years. <br /><br />I can't decide what's weirder: an 8-bit game made in 2008 for all three of today's home game consoles, or a game in which robots built to shoot at each other face off in soccer matches. <br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/virtually-overlooked-mega-man-soccer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: Mega Man Soccer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/virtually-overlooked-mega-man-soccer/">Virtually Overlooked: Mega Man Soccer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Sep 2008 21:00:00 EST. Electronic Arts has had the NFL <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/09/nfl-extends-cba-ea-still-holds-exclusive-rights/">completely monopolized since 2005</a>, giving them exclusive rights to official league teams and players for their <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Madden">Madden</a> </em>franchise -- but did you also know that they've also traditionally had assets for most professional European soccer leagues tied up as well? (You did? Well aren't you <em>awesome</em>.) However, Konami recently released some details concerning the next installment in their <em>Pro Evolution Soccer</em> franchise -- chief among these being <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/konami-unveils-pro-evo-soccer-deals">their new licensing deals with the UEFA</a>, as well as the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_United_F.C.">Manchester United</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_F.C.">Liverpool football clubs</a>.<br /><br />Assets from the UEFA as well as the two clubs will be included in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Pro%20Evolution%20Soccer%202009">Pro Evolution Soccer 2009</a></em>. It's quite a coup for Konami, whose sales figures for <em>PES</em> titles have traditionally paled in comparison to those of EA's <em>FIFA </em>series. We anticipate EA's retaliation -- we hear they're in talks with various athletic leagues to purchase the exclusive rights for <em>sports</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/14/konami-scores-uefa-assets-for-pro-evolution-soccer-franchise/">Konami scores UEFA assets for Pro Evolution Soccer franchise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Sep 2008 19:00:00 EST. <br /><em>Pro Evolution Soccer 2008</em> on the Wii was released some five months after other versions enjoyed their worldwide debut, and that won't be changing for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/wii-scores-a-pro-evolution-soccer-follow-up/">the 2009 update</a>. While the Xbox 360, and PlayStation editions will launch this fall in Europe, "Spring 2009" is officially the launch window for the Wii game, making it that rarest of things: a sports title with the correct year on the front of the box. It'll also be fronted by Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi (above).<br /><br />Even a five-month wait is worth the hassle, for <em>PES 2008</em> on the Wii turned out to be an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/metareview-pro-evolution-soccer-2008/">admirable and unique</a> soccer experience all of its own, and the good news is that Konami will be keeping the same system for the <em>2009</em> game -- we're off to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geTBVonAZpA">fight rival supporters</a> and perhaps smash up a caf&eacute; to celebrate.<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/another-lengthy-wait-for-next-pro-evolution-soccer-game/">Another lengthy wait for next Pro Evolution Soccer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Aug 2008 13:49:00 EST. <br />Against all of our expectations, <em>Pro Evolution Soccer 2008</em> for the Wii was a brilliant reinvention of an already brilliant series, so here's some brilliant news: we'll be getting a 2009 edition. Konami has the Wii version listed on its own site for a "Winter 2008" launch (as <em>World Soccer Winning Eleven 2009</em>, the Japanese name), which should come as a relief to those who caught an <a href="http://www.winningelevenblog.com/news/offical-pes-2009-press-release-live/">earlier press release</a> that <em>didn't mention the Wii at all</em>.<br /><br />Indeed, the news brought about an impromptu Mexican wave amongst the Wii Fanboy staff. Or it would have done, if we didn't all work in different rooms in different countries.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=48917">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/wii-scores-a-pro-evolution-soccer-follow-up/">Wii scores a Pro Evolution Soccer follow-up</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 11:45:00 EST. It's true -- <em>Inazuma Eleven</em> looks great, and each piece of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/inazuma-eleven-media-explosion/">media</a> has been drooled upon by RPG, anime and even general <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soccer/">soccer</a> fans alike. With the imminent Japanese release on August 22nd, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/level-5/">Level-5</a> has begun advertising on television, and this commercial is a perfect place for gamers in the dark about <span style="font-style: italic;">Inazuma</span> to take a first look and become ultra-interested.<br /><br /><em>Inazuma Eleven</em> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/fresh-inazuma-eleven-scans-take-to-the-field/">incredibly original</a>, featuring real-time strategy gameplay on the field, as players draw on the touch screen to direct positions of team members. Hopefully the gameplay is easy enough to understand for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/level-5s-goal-release-inazuma-eleven-in-japan-this-august/">keen importers</a>, because the chances of localization are not that great. EA Sports has apologized for putting "The Soldier's Song," traditionally sung at United Ireland games, in place of Northern Ireland's national anthem, "God Save the Queen," in <em>UEFA Euro 2008</em>. <br />Any <strike>football</strike> soccer-loving Brit of a certain age will fondly recall <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subbuteo"><em>Subbuteo</em></a>, and it's presumably those consumers that 505 Games is targeting with a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/subbuteo/887113/">DS version</a> of the game. For the uninitiated, a quick history lesson: <em>Subbuteo</em> was a miniature soccer board game, played by taking turns to flick <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Subbuteo-80s.jpg">small figures</a> on hemispherical bases at an oversized ball, the aim being to get the ball in your opponent's net. Games usually lasted until your dog chewed the little men, or until Dad came in drunk again and stepped on them.<br /><br />Anyway, it reached the height of its popularity in the '70s and '80s, before decent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soccer">soccer</a> videogames (hi, <em>Sensible Soccer</em>) showed up and caught the chil'n's attention. The original <em>Subbuteo</em> is still played today (there's even an annual world championship), but is far less well-known, which is probably why 505 Games is making a DS game about it. It's out this September (though probably only in Europe), and will feature fully customizable tournaments, traditional leagues, and even a full online multiplayer. Wooo!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/subbuteo/">Subbuteo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/subbuteo/#887114"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/subbuteo_cg_jun27_image0002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/subbuteo/#887113"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/subbuteo_cg_jun27_image0000_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/subbuteo/#887112"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/subbuteo_cg_jun27_image0006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/subbuteo/#887111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/subbuteo_cg_jun27_subbuteo_10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/subbuteo/#887110"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/subbuteo_cg_jun27_subbuteo_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/505-games-flicking-subbuteo-our-way/">505 Games flicking Subbuteo our way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 23:00:00 EST. <br />The latest issue of <em>CoroCoro Comic</em> has taken a long, hard look at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/level-5">Level-5</a>'s forthcoming soccer RPG, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/inazuma-eleven-adds-three-for-twelv/"><em>Inazuma Eleven</em></a>. Mostly this involves displaying large quantities of the title's pretty fantastic character art (there's a definite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/07/ds-fanboy-review-professor-layton-and-the-curious-village/"><em>Layton</em></a> feel to it), but there are a number of screenshots dotted about the pages.<br /><br />These show off several aspects of the title, from your common or garden dialog screens to shots of the matches that take place (and in which players control the movement of players by drawing on the touchscreen). Combining soccer with a real-time SRPG is fascinating to us, not to mention <em>ridiculously original</em> -- the closest comparison we can think of is <a href="http://www.mobygames.com/game/n64/international-superstar-soccer-2000"><em>International Superstar Soccer 2000</em></a> for the Nintendo 64, which included RPG-lite elements in its single-player mode, but nothing quite as in-depth as <em>Inazuma Eleven</em>.<br /><br />Anyway, we digress: Jeux France was kind enough to pop <em>CoroCoro</em> in the scanner and show us the entire preview, so hit the "Source" link below for the full skinny.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/fresh-inazuma-eleven-scans-take-to-the-field/">Fresh Inazuma Eleven scans take to the field</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 15:30:00 EST. Being able to rent games is something that most of us take for granted -- in Japan, it doesn't happen because of publisher blackballing. Konami has decided to give the whole rental thing a try, though, starting with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/29/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-2-18-2-24/">the popular</a> soccer game, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/metareview-pro-evolution-soccer-2008/">Winning Eleven: Play Maker 2008</a> </em>(aka <em>Pro Evolution Soccer 2008</em>).<br /><br />Even so, Japanese gamers won't be able to test out the title in full. Instead, trial versions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/27/free-online-pes-magazine-is-a-good-way-to-kill-some-time/">the Wii game</a> will be offered for free at Tsutaya stores. It's kind of like downloading a demo, only you have to go and pick it up instead.<br /><br />We're interested to see if this has any impact on Japan's gaming industry, and if Konami will expand their "rental" service in the future.<br /><br />

With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports">all the</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/deca-sports">multi-sport</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/play-summer-athletics-on-your-wii/">games</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/summer-sports/">on the market</a> for the Wii, we haven't really kept tabs on THQ's rendition, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/big-beach-sports-better-than-little-beach-sports/"><em>Big Beach Sports</em></a>. Since the software is releasing next week for the budget price of $29.99, though, it's time to give it a closer inspection.<br /><br />Looking at these new screens, we have to say -- ignoring it seems like the right choice. Perhaps we're being a little harsh, but that's why we're paid the big bucks, after all. We can see that the developers were aiming for "cute," but might have gotten a bit closer to "ew ew ew."<br /><br />We're not ones to nitpick about graphics if the gameplay is fun, yet performing things like "the bump" with the Wiimote seem too tedious to be a good time. Perhaps the oversaturated mini-sports market has made us too cynical, and hopefully we'll be proven wrong. Yet, for now, we'll file this game under "mehware."<br /><br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/big-beach-sports-looks-more-like-big-bore-sports/">Big Beach Sports looks more like big bore sports</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 21:00:00 EST. Those of you who enjoy soccer of the North American variety will begin to see jerseys emblazoned with a very familiar logo (that of the Xbox Live service) when a brand spankin' new Major League Soccer team, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Sounders_FC">the Seattle Sounders FC</a>, makes its debut in the 2009 season. The team (not to be confused with other Sounders franchises in the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Sounders_%28NASL%29">NASL</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Sounders_%28USL%29">USL</a>) <a href="http://www.soundersfc.com/Article.aspx?id=1596&amp;languageId=1033">recently agreed to a 5-year, $20 million sponsorship from Microsoft</a> and its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rrod/">hot-under-the-hood</a> home console.<br /><br />In addition to fancy new jerseys, the young team's home field will be tiled "The Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field", and the 360 will reportedly be recognized as the "official and exclusive video game console of Major League Soccer." We pray Sony doesn't respond by sponsoring a competing MLS team -- to combine the zealous fanaticism associated with gaming consoles and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Street">soccer teams</a> may incite a fanboy war that would tear our continent <em>asunder</em>.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/28/microsoft-xbox-360-sponsor-new-major-league-soccer-team-seattle/">Microsoft, Xbox 360 sponsor new Major League Soccer team Seattle Sounders FC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 May 2008 18:30:00 EST. Lexicon Entertainment is even banking on that assumption, as the company is releasing five different trivia games under the <em>Super Brain Tease</em> license. Each game will have a different subject, giving you a choice from the following:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Football (aka soccer, for those of us in the U.S.)</li>
    <li>History</li>
    <li>Geography</li>
    <li>Music</li>
    <li>Movies</li>
</ul>
We find it amusing that you Brits are so crazy about your soccer, er, football, that Lexicon has ditched a broader "Sports" category in favor of something so specific. All poking fun aside, though, should these titles sell well enough they'll only be the first of many. <br /><br />The main allure of such games, we're sure, will be their budget price points, as each edition will be offered for &pound;9.99. If the idea of trivia at such a cost interests you, you can expect to see the <em>Super Brain Teas</em>e series hit retail in Q4.<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/test-your-useless-knowledge-with-super-brain-tease/">Test your useless knowledge with Super Brain Tease</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 May 2008 22:32:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Level5/">Level-5</a> is sinking big money into their DS soccer RPG <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Inazuma-Eleven/">Inazuma Eleven</a>,</em> seemingly expecting a massive return. The company held a press conference in Tokyo to outline the "Cross-Media Project," which is a somewhat nicer way of describing "milking the new franchise." In addition to the planned manga and anime series, Level-5 president Akihiro Hino revealed an upcoming <em>Inazuma Eleven </em>card game, to be released concurrently with the DS game on August 22. <br /><br />Along with all this stuff, Level-5 announced a second game, <em>Inazuma Eleven </em><em>Break</em>, for consoles. No specific console or date was announced, but it's not hard to guess which home console Level-5 would choose for a mass-market children's game. They'd choose the one <em>with a mass market.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/inazuma-eleven-headed-to-consoles-wii-likely/">Inazuma Eleven headed to consoles, Wii likely</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 May 2008 13:15:00 EST. Combining a sports title with RPG themes, that alone was enough to sell us on the game. Of course, it also doesn't hurt that Level-5 is developing it. The developer has been building interest in their soccer RPG for a long time in a lot of unconventional ways: offering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/japan-gets-to-rent-rare-professor-layton-freebie/">demos</a> on DS cards which <em>also</em> feature exclusive <em>Layton</em> content, creating a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/inazuma-eleven-adds-three-for-twelv/">pop group</a>, going so far as to buy naming rights to a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/level-5-is-rich/">soccer stadium</a>. <br /><br />Will the marketing overkill pay off for Level-5? We were pretty sure <em>Inazuma Eleven</em> was going to be huge even <em>before</em> they started doing this stuff, just because of the massive amounts of cred the company has picked up in Japan since <em>Layton</em> and <em>DQVIII.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/level-5s-goal-release-inazuma-eleven-in-japan-this-august/">Level-5's goal: release Inazuma Eleven in Japan this August</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 10:30:00 EST. Do you eat, sleep, and breathe <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/metareview-pro-evolution-soccer-2008/">Pro Evolution Soccer 2008</a></em>? Well then, not only do you have an amazing digestive system, but also you'd probably be interested to know that Konami wants to further feed your addiction.<br /><br />Why else would the company team up with <a href="http://www.gamerzines.com/">GamerZines</a> to make an online magazine completely dedicated to <em>PES</em> Wii? Oh right, promotional reasons. At its core, <a href="http://www.gamerzines.com/konami/">this mag</a> is just an attempt to hype up people for <em>PES 2008</em>. Even so, if you're a fan of the game or are thinking about buying it, you might find a few interesting things in this free zine. <br /><br />Aside from pictures of happy people who are supposedly playing the game, the magazine offers gameplay videos, as well as an interview with <em>PES 2008's</em> Wii producer, Akiyoshi "Greyhound" Chosogabe. There's also an entertaining little game-like quiz/competition where you have to identify five soccer players (which this blogger failed at miserably).<br /><br />All in all, there's not that much to it, but current and potential <em>PES</em> lovers might find reading it to be a nice distraction.<br /><br />
