We've seen many games unlock new content in PlayStation Home, like the Batcave from Batman: Arkham Asylum. However, what we haven't seen yet is the ability to unlock content in-game from Sony's online world. That changes this week, with the addition of the SOCOM OPFOR game space. A Home-exclusive minigame will challenge players to assemble an assault rifle in 12 seconds or less. The prize? A golden AK-47 that can be transferred into SOCOM Confrontation.

Likely, this is just the beginning for expanded Home integration. Associate Producer KC Coleman commented on the PlayStation Blog: "It's truly a win-win-win situation. It's a win for Home because we have opened up a huge door that will allow developers to continue to blur the line between PlayStation Home and PS3 games." See a trailer after the break.
Continue reading PlayStation Home integrates into games, beginning with SOCOM Confrontation

PlayStation Home integrates into games, beginning with SOCOM Confrontation originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 17:45:00 EST. Thalken called the dismissals "temporary," with the goal to bring back as many of the affected staff as possible at a later date. He did not specify just how many employees had been laid off, but said the company will continue to offer benefits to those affected.

"Our current project needs do not align with our current staffing levels," Thalken told GameSpot. The studio's last release was SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 in February.

Additionally, Kotaku reports that, according to its sources, the rumored Star Wars Battlefront Online, which Slant Six was reportedly developing, has been canceled by publisher LucasArts. The game was never announced, and its existence was only suggested by an earlier rumor. As such, its possible relationship to the recent studio layoffs is unconfirmed. We've contacted Slant Six to clear up the issue.
Slant Six enacts 'temporary' layoffs; Star Wars Battlefront Online rumored to be canceled originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 15:30:00 EST. Detailed a couple months back, SOCOM: Confrontation's DLC pack "Cold Front" arrives later today on the PlayStation Network for the introductory price of $10 ($15 after December 20), though we're just seeing it in action today with a couple of gameplay trailers.

The DLC includes not just five new maps, but snow effects, a new gameplay mode and ... wait, what's this? Fancy new clothes! Nothing says "tactical warfare" like goose down jackets! Get a taste for the DLC, then test your mettle against the urge to get fashionable, just after the break.

Done with the MAG beta? Bored? Well, you could always jump back into SOCOM Confrontation, especially now that the long-teased 1.60 update is live. Highlights from 1.6 include the addition of new special forces: Dutch KCT and the Italian COMSUBIN Special Forces teams, each equipped with unique weapons, and four new weapons for all players: the 9mm Sub and M82A1A for the Mercenaries and the AK-74 and SR-25 for the Commandos.

In addition to the new content, the 1.6 patch fixes a number of bugs ranging from serious "players were being booted out of the game to the XMB while loading into and during gameplay" to minute. The full patch notes can be seen on SOCOM.com.
Listen up, soldiers -- we've got new intel from the PS Blog on the enemy and it appears your unique set of SOCOM: Confrontation skills are needed in the snow-covered lands of eastern Europe. If you've got the mettle, we'll be taking the fight to the enemy in five new warzones: Uprising; Entrapment; Blizzard; Night Stalker; and Vigilance -- two of which are brand new zones of conflict while the remaining three war zones are from previous SOCOM campaigns. We'll also be needing those of you brave enough to enlist to hit the books and gain intel on Arms Run, an all-new multiplayer mode where players must destroy or activate a series of dynamically placed missile silos.

Considering we're tossing you out into these icy, blinding conditions, we're also providing you with more than the fancy white goose-down gear you see above (we pay extra for goose feather because we care): soldiers who enlist in the new Cold Front DLC pack will also gain access to a new thermal scope attachment, allowing you to spot the enemy much more effectively. You'll be dealing with the Russian Spetsnaz in these new areas, soldier -- so we're also going to give you some new weapons, ordinance and the option to choose primary and secondary specializations with unlockable equipment unique to the specific skill set you choose.

Finally, the bad news: due to the current economic conditions affecting the country, you'll need to help us recoup some of the cost of <strike>keeping the war machine oiled up</strike> trying to make a better tomorrow. As such, all soldiers who sign up for Cold Front will be required to pay an initial fee of $14.99 -- however it'll only set back our most dedicated troops $9.99 if they sign up in the first 24 hours, the SOCOM Blog reports. The information on when Operation: Cold Front DLC will deploy is currently on a need-to-know basis and we'll be sure to let you know when you need to know.
Cold Front DLC sweeps across SOCOM: Confrontation originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Oct 2009 06:00:00 EST. After months of silence, Slant Six and Sony have finally announced the deployment date of SOCOM Confrontation 1.50. Supposedly PSN's biggest first-party multiplayer game (so far), the long-awaited 1.50 patch adds a number of key features, such as Clan Ladders, Tournaments, Calendar, Follow-A-Friend, and Private Games, in addition to fixing a number of issues. The full list of updates can be seen after the break.

Of course, this isn't all that's coming for SOCOM. After 1.50 will be the even-more-long-awaited 1.60 patch, which will add free DLC to the game. Considering the lengthy wait for 1.50, it might take quite some time before we see that one ship.
Continue reading SOCOM Confronts the 1.50 patch next Tuesday

SOCOM Confronts the 1.50 patch next Tuesday originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 19:00:00 EST. According to a recent Sony press release, two more best-selling PS3 titles are getting the ol' "Red Box" treatment. Beginning Sunday, August 16, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation (sans headset) will reach "Greatest Hits" status, dropping their respective MSRPs down to a reasonable $29.99.

Fans of the SOCOM series will likely be thrilled about Confrontation's markdown -- but every self-respecting PS3 owner needs to have Uncharted in their collection. Now that you can make that happen with just a Hamilton and a Jackson, you've really got no reason to go without.
Uncharted, SOCOM Confrontation going Greatest Hits on August 16 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 16:53:00 EST. What's the biggest online game on the PS3? No, it's not Killzone 2. No, it's not even Resistance 2. According to SCEA senior producer Mark Rogers, SOCOM Confrontation stands above both of Sony's high-profile first-party FPS offerings by having the most simultaneous online connections on the PlayStation Network. He attributes Confrontation's success to the community's commitment to the franchise. Whereas other gamers may play an online game for a few weeks and move on, SOCOM fans have proven to be far more dedicated (despite the game's ... troubled launch).

The devotion of the SOCOM community will be rewarded by an upcoming patch, Rogers promises. While the Slant Six team has been largely quiet about progress on the patch, he says the massive scale and scope of the patch has led to an extended testing cycle. With the promise of DLC in the future, it's clear that SOCOM addicts will find even more reason to avoid playing other games for a long time.
SOCOM Confrontation bigger online than Killzone 2, Sony producer says originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 10:19:00 EST. SOCOM: Confrontation will soon join the DLC fold, with new content scheduled to drop later this summer. While details on the new content are slim, the game's official site promises more information will be made available in the upcoming weeks. What we do know is the content will include a new area of operation, a new game mode, along with new maps (teased in the tiny image above), characters, weapons and attachments.

Audiophiles will also be happy to hear the game's music will be updated and players can select a new voice-over when the content arrives. Now that SOCOM: Confrontation has evolved beyond its original feature-sparse retail release, we're excited for new ways to get tactical on our online enemies.

SOCOM: Confrontation DLC available later this summer originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 16:00:00 EST. With SOCOM's 1.50 patch finally "feature complete," the guys at Slant Six decided to announce plans for patch 1.60. The release will add new Special Forces to the game: the Dutch KCT and the Italian COMSUBIN. Each Force will include new heads, voices and outfits. Each of the Forces will also don special weapons: the 417 assault rifle for the Dutch KCT and the SPAS 15 shotgun for the Italian COMSUBIN Special Forces.

Additionally, four new weapons will be available to all players with the 1.60 patch. These are the 9mm Sub Machine Gun, M82A1A, Ak-74 and SR-25. The patch will also include a number of weapon updates and adjustments to existing weapons.

Beyond patch work, Slant Six has also been working on "a major content release/pack," which will be revealed later this month.

[Thanks, Tim B.!]
SOCOM 1.60 patch gives players free DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 14:00:00 EST. PlayStation Home is getting yet another update today, with the introduction of a new SOCOM Confrontation game space and a new for-purchase personal space based on Ghostbusters.

The "SOCOM Tactical Operations Center" space is actually the first half of the SOCOM Home hub. This space will allow players to gather and create strategies around the Telestrator. Sounds a lot like the Warhawk game space.

The Ghostbusters firehouse personal space is a three-story complex, ripped straight from the Ghostbusters video game. The personal space will come with unique items, like an Ecto-1, and features Stage Set functionality, so players can create their own Ghostbusters-themed movies. Finally, you'll be able to fly around as Slimer as well. Both these updates should be available in Home later today.
Continue reading SOCOM and Ghostbusters join PlayStation Home

SOCOM and Ghostbusters join PlayStation Home originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 13:00:00 EST. Slant Six released a version 1.41 patch for SOCOM: Confrontation this morning. It's available for download right now and fixes some of the game's slowdown issues. It also adjusts some minor display settings and tweaks a bit of the gameplay.

The last patch for Confrontation was the 1.30 update in January, which added Trophies. So, why are we now on 1.41 without a 1.40 update? Slant Six had this to say: "The 1.40 was intended to support the European release, we combined the 1.40 and the 1.41 together to speed the deployment of the above fixes." Check after the break for the full list of patch notes.

Continue reading SOCOM Confrontation gets 1.41 patch

SOCOM Confrontation gets 1.41 patch originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. If you've been putting off SOCOM: Confrontation until developer Slant Six worked out all the bugs (oh, and added a Quick Match/Party system ... and Trophies), then today's your lucky day, friend. The long anticipated 1.30 update was pushed out early this morning, bringing with it the aforementioned features and fixes. Will it be enough to restore Sony's once-proud franchise to the top of your multiplayer shooter-heap? We won't pretend to know the answer to that, so we'll ask you. Is SOCOM back in action?
SOCOM: Confrontation 1.30 patch finally brings Trophies, Party system, bug fixes originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 17:22:00 EST.
SOCOM: Confrontation's highly-anticipated 1.30 update, which has been met with delay after delay, will finally be released on January 9th, at 5AM EST/2AM PST. Hey, that's in a couple of hours! The patch brings with it Trophies (a list of them can be viewed here), D-pad lean-in, a Quick Match/Party system, as well as key bug fixes and new features.

The update will take an hour or two to happen, so the game will be down until approximately 7AM EST/4AM PST. And ouch -- this patch will also wipe out all player statistics.

It's been a long time coming, Slant Six! Let's hope everything goes smoothly.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

SOCOM fans looking forward to playing Confrontation over the holiday break won't be able to enjoy patch 1.30. Those expecting all the features of 1.30 will be disappointed to hear that the patch won't be available to download until the new year. "Unfortunately, due to the Holidays the update will not be approved by SCE Format QA until early next year. Our QA staff will be here, testing the game over vacation, but the SCE QA teams which must approve the update before release will not."

As of now, it appears the patch will be available during the week of January 5th or January 12th. While it's disappointing to have to wait so long, SOCOM fans have proven to be some of the most patient gamers out there.

[Thanks, Devin93!]
SOCOM Confrontation 1.30 patch ready to go live ... in January originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 18:06:00 EST. Try and stay SOCALM as we relay this exciting news! Sony's frequently updated SOCOM: Confrontation blog has been firing off tons of posts over the past two weeks releasing details about the trophy-infused "patch 1.30" that will eventually be making its way to the game. A recent entry into the blog revealed the addition of two oft-requested matchmaking features that are SOCOMpletely overdue -- a "quick match" mode and a party system which allows you to join games with groups of friends with ease.

The two features are actually linked -- selecting the quick match option will take you into a party lobby, where you and your PSN friend platoon can congregate. After your party is built, you can choose one of the three match types to join (16 v. 16 Ranked, Unranked and Respawn) and be automatically matched up against similarly skilled parties. However, no word has been given on a specific launch window for the much-anticipated patch -- SOCOMe on, Slant Six! The anticipation is killing us!
Quick match, party functionality coming to SOCOM: Confrontation in patch 1.30 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 13 Dec 2008 13:30:00 EST. This is what we're talking about! SOCOM Confrontation has had a less-than-stellar launch, but it looks like things are finally turning around. The upcoming version 1.30 patch is quite the biggie -- it add features like Trophies, revised items and controls, and the return of the prone move. However, it also significantly expands upon the game's lobby system, allowing the online experience to go more smoothly. For a game that has no single player component, this is quite crucial.

The Quick Match/Party system will be added in the upcoming patch. What does this mean? It means that SOCOM players will be able to jump into appropriate games, with the friends, in a much faster and organized way. "Once you select quick match you are taken to the party screen where you can invite other players to join your party. On the party screen, you can chat with your party while you are waiting for everyone to join. Once everyone has joined, select join game and your party is matched with other players of similar skill. For the 1.30 update, you can select from 3 different game types for the quick match; 16x16 Ranked, 16x16 Unranked and 16x16 Respawn. You can find a whole list of those changes here. However, the v1.30 patch will also be adding more than just the previously revealed content. The patch will also add in the ability to use the D-pad for the lean-in feature, instead of using the regular Sixaxis controls. Players can toggle between the two options in the middle of battle as seen in the clip above. Also featured in video (after the break), SCEA and Slant Six shows off the new transparent scoreboard.

However, there's still no mention of a release date for the v1.30 patch. Fans have been waiting for the patch since news first came out nearly a month ago, and hopefully, they won't have to wait much longer.

Continue reading SOCOM: Confrontation 1.30 patch adds in D-pad lean-in

SOCOM: Confrontation 1.30 patch adds in D-pad lean-in originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 20:45:00 EST. Looks like SOCOM Confrontation has been delayed to "early 2009," according to Eurogamer. While American gamers have had their hands on the game for a few months, the experience has been less than stellar, with a very buggy launch followed by a number of frequent patches. Perhaps when Confrontation lands in Europe, the game will actually ... what's the word we're looking for? Oh yes -- work.

The game will be bundled with the official PS3 Bluetooth headset, just like it did in America. Should it be priced the same as in the US, the bundle will still be a terrific deal.

[Thanks, Christopher G.!]
SOCOM so-not-coming to Europe in 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Nov 2008 08:18:00 EST. SOCOM: Confrontation didn't launch with Trophies; instead, it shipped with a lot of bugs. Slant Six even admits that "the launch was pretty rough on all of us." However, with patch 1.20 already out fixing a majority of the problem issues and a 1.30 patch coming soon, things are turning around.

In fact, the much coveted Trophy support is said to arrive in the upcoming 1.30 patch, among other new features. You can find a list of all the new features and bug fixes for the new update after the break. The crew notes, however, "that some items listed may be delayed to a following update if additional development is required beyond what our schedule for the 1.30 update allows." That means, don't take it as a 100 percent guarantee.

[Thanks Ryan and DeforMAKulizer!]

Continue reading SOCOM: Confrontation team working on next patch with Trophies

SOCOM: Confrontation team working on next patch with Trophies originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. Unfortunately, SOCOM Confrontation has been plagued with a number of game stability issues since release. The bugs have been significant, rendering the game unplayable in many situations. A patch tomorrow will fix a myriad of problems:

Fixed many issues which would cause the game to crash, hang, disconnect and exit to the PS3 XMB.

Fixed an issue which would cause large numbers of players in a high player count game to be simultaneously disconnected.

Fixed an issue which would cause players to be invincible.

Fixed a physics issue which would cause players to occasionally "warp" around on the map.

Fixed an issue where a "corrupt save data" message would be incorrectly displayed after updating the game.

Fixed some player model issues related to team swapping.

Client/server optimization.

Fixed an issue where the scope camera had an incorrect offset from the barrel of the gun while prone or leaning/peeking.

Would-be digital soldiers were disappointed this week to find that the recently released SOCOM: Confrontation was launched sans trophies. We're not exactly sure why, though rumor has it that the title's much-coveted cups just weren't shiny enough. According to Sony PR rep Jennifer Clark, "The trophies will become available via patch in the coming weeks." In the mean time, highly skilled players will be mailed postcards which, depending on the level of militaristic prowess displayed in-game, will be adorned with gold star stickers, or scratch-n'-sniff stickers in the shape of a bundle of grapes, proudly displaying the words "Grape Job!"
SOCOM: Confrontation trophies to be patched in soon originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 19 Oct 2008 16:30:00 EST. Now that the unscheduled PSN maintenance is done with, we can get on with Booty business. Oops, it appears the Age of Booty won't be starting on PSN today. Despite Capcom's previous announcement, checking the publisher's press site reveals the game now has a November release, along with PC. Hey, look. This update looks pretty familiar. It's mostly similar to the European update today, with the exception of SOCOM: Confrontation, which is now available to download for $40. We humbly request that you grab the bluetooth headset bundle rather than the downloadable version. The more PS3 owners with headsets, the better. Whoops, we're getting off topic. Here's the full release list:

Playable content

SOCOM: Confrontation ($39.99)

Sno-Cross Championship Racing PS1 game ($5.99)

MotorStorm Pacific Rift demo (free)

Add-on content

Tiger Woords PGA Tour 2009 "Spyglass Hill" add-on course ($7.49)

Eye of Judgment Set 3 expansion ($14.99)

Eye of Judgment Set 2 & 3 expansion bundle ($19.99)

"The trophies will become available via patch in the coming weeks," SCEA's Jennifer Clark told us when we inquired about the game's strange lack of Trophies. Yes, if you buy SOCOM Confrontation, you'll find that it's absent of the collectible Trophies everyone's been raving about. It's strange that Slant Six wasn't able to include Trophies into the final version of the game, but this may explain why we had so much trouble finding out the Trophy list so soon before the game's release.

We're hoping that the Trophies that are enabled will take advantage of a retroactive rewards system. Undoubtedly, hardcore SOCOM fans are ready to spend hours in the online world of Confrontation. Of course, let Burnout Paradise teach a lesson: perhaps it's best not to expect retroactive Trophies to um ... y'know, work.

No Trophies for SOCOM at launch, to be patched later originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 22:50:00 EST.
Are Japanese players even interested in the very-Western SOCOM franchise? We're not entirely too sure, but this new trailer released for the Japanese market will try to attract players to the 32-player online fragfest. Thankfully, video footage of the game can be understood in any language. Chances are, though, if you're one of the many that are eagerly anticipating the game -- you're already in the beta.

SOCOM confronts Japanese players in new trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 11:15:00 EST.
It has been 10 days since the start of the SOCOM: Confrontation beta, but Slant Six has finally provided a manual for us. We are not sure why this wasn't provided on or before the day the public beta was released, but better late than never, we suppose. Check out the manual here.

Those of you who are looking forward to another patch for the beta shouldn't have to wait much longer -- another patch is in the works and the focus of it will be to resolve the following issues:

Abnormally long network synchronization issues when some users in a game have a poor network connection. This issue causes 4-7 minute (or longer) load times when late joining a game.

An issue where respawn game late joiners were sometimes stuck in spectator mode and could not respawn into the game.

Remove the latency detection network test which is causing some users with poor network connections to receive the network latency icon (red X).

We'll provide you with an exact release date as soon as the information is available.

[Via SOCOM.com]
SOCOM: Confrontation Public Beta Manual is a bit late originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Sep 2008 18:00:00 EST.
It was a rough weekend for the SOCOM faithful as server and network code issues made the game nigh-unplayable for many. Sony was well aware of the problem, promising a fix before the end of this week. Surprise: the fix arrived early this morning, and we - along with, oh, everyone who waited for the beta - were eager to see what exactly was fixed.

Turns out the answer is (at least in our experience) quite a bit. We were irked to find that our character customization data was wiped by the 1.10 patch, but them's the breaks in betaville. Rebuilding our characters wouldn't be worth it if we couldn't get into a match, though. Happily, we have found that almost all front-end network issues (login errors, general slowness, etc.) have been nipped, we can finally join games, and, when we do, gameplay seems less laggy.

It still takes quite a while to load into a match, but knowing that you'll actually be able to play once you do makes the waiting much more bearable. For those who are in the beta, let us know what your experience with 1.10 has been like in comments.

We know that a number of you have been having problems with the SOCOM: Confrontation public beta. Well, there is finally some relieve in sight: it has been announced that a patch will be applied today at 5AM PDT/8AM EST/12PM GMT. There will also be server maintenance at that time for about 1.5 hours.

According to the SOCOM blog, the Public Beta 1.10 Patch won't fix everything, but it should "address a number of stability and late joining issues," lower the volume of the proximity chat by 50%, add support for European EULAs as well as dedicated servers for Europe and Australia. They are also looking into other issues, with a promise of "more updates to both the server and client in the future."

Eurogamer will be giving out their SOCOM: Confrontation beta keys starting at 4PM UK time, which is half an hour from now. You must be in the United Kingdom, and you have to first register here with Eurogamer. Make sure you are signed in, and keep checking their page for more information. They will be given out on a first-come, first served basis. Finally, unlike the US beta keys, these UK beta keys will only work on one PS3. Good luck!

The PlayStation Blog has listed some details for North America about the new PS3 headset available this fall. The peripheral will be available in the $60 SOCOM: Confrontation bundle, or as a standalone peripheral for $50, similar to the price in Japan. Some features of the headset include:

"High-Quality" mode with use on PS3, offering noise cancellation and a better chat quality on the console.

The quality of the headset will allegedly allow for more accurate commands of AI-controlled squad mates in Confrontation. There will also be "voice animation" where the player's avatar will "mimic" them during voice chat.

There will be an in-game status indicator exclusive to the headset. It will display connection status, battery charge, speaker volume and mute status.

Cradling the set back on the dock will turn it into a "desktop microphone" while charging.

So, what say the headset purchasing vox populi? Is SOCOM worth spending an extra $10 for your fancy new Bluetooth PS3 headset?

Those of you on the other side of the Atlantic might have not heard much about those SOCOM: Confrontation beta keys since they were mentioned last month, but now we have a little bit of news for you guys in the UK. Apparently, Eurogamer will be have 6,000 of them to give out to UK gamers whenever the beta begins. No other information was available, but details should be announced in "the next few days."

Furthermore, late last week we learned that the US beta was delayed until September 5th. We knew that Europe was suppose to get the beta on the same day as the US, but as of now Eurogamer claims that "Sony has yet to confirm exact details for Europe," which hints at a delay. We'll keep you updated as soon as more information is released.

[Via Three Speech]
Eurogamer to give away 6,000 SOCOM: Confrontation beta keys (for UK only) originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 09:00:00 EST. Over at the official PlayStation Blog, SOCOM: Confrontation producer Seth Luisi has confirmed a massive or slight delay (depending on your level of SOCOM infatuation) for the game's public beta. Originally slated to begin yesterday, the virtual doors will instead open this Friday, September 5. (QORE subscribers will be let in the following Friday, September 12.)

Luisi says the delay was prompted by the team "working so hard to ensure the final product is fantastic," which we believe is Ye Olde Spinne for "we found a bug." Thankfully (and thoughtfully) the beta's run won't be cut short by the delay; it will last a full month, from 9/5 to 10/5. (Make that three weeks for QORE <strike>readers</strike> viewers.)
SOCOM beta confronted by delay originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 15:30:00 EST. The official PS3 headset, which will be bundled with SOCOM Confrontation, really may be as high as $50 when it releases as a standalone product later this year. This would make the $60 SOCOM bundle an obvious deal, as it would give players both the headset and access to the online shooter for only $10 more than the headset alone.

The headset, which will debut on October 30th in Japan, will cost 5000 yen (~$45.93). It is supposedly of a much higher quality than the headset included with Warhawk last year.

Official PS3 headset priced at 5000 yen in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 10:30:00 EST. While many (including ourselves) were excited for the launch of the public beta come September 1st, news on the official SOCOM site tells us that the public beta has been delayed (again). Thankfully, the wait isn't too long: the public beta will now be available on September 5th, with Qore purchasers getting access on September 12th. To make up for the delay, the beta will also be extended a few days, with a new end date of October 5th.

Those that want to get access into the public beta can go to GameStop to pre-order the game. With a pre-order, you'll get access for yourself, and two friends, to join this sneak peak at the online shooter.

[Thanks, frankym!]
SOCOM public beta slightly delayed originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 30 Aug 2008 16:50:00 EST. Just like your friends across the Atlantic, European gamers will be able to enjoy the SOCOM Confrontation beta on September 1st. In fact, the beta will be global so players from Asia, America, Europe and Oceania will be able to play each other all on the same day (unlike some other beta programs). Each region will have different methods of acquiring access to the beta, so keep a sharp eye out at your local retailer for any pre-order incentives they may have.

[Thanks, raj!]
SOCOM Confrontation beta goes global, Europe gets access on 9/1 as well originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Aug 2008 14:30:00 EST.
Just a couple of weeks to go until those with GameStop pre-orders for SOCOM Confrontation will gain entry into the public beta for the game. (Qore subscribers will need to stay patient for a few days after that - d'oh!) With the sneak peak looming, the SOCOM Blog has posted some salient details on what to expect content-wise.

The latest update details the "Crossroads" map, which will be playable in both 16- and 32-player variations. Available game modes will include Extraction, Suppression, and the less friendly sounding Elimination. Beta players will have access to weapon and gear customization, as well as clans and stats tracking - player data will be deleted once the game hits retail, so bold beta entrants best not get too attached to their accomplishments.

On another SOCOM Confrontation related note: we've toyed around with Sony's official PS3 Bluetooth headset (included in the $59.99 retail bundle) and not only is it well designed, but it acts as a far-field microphone while in its charging cradle so you never have to go without voice chat.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]

The latest entry on the SOCOM: Confrontation blog reveals some additional juicy information regarding the beta. There will be a Crossroads map with 16 players as well as a Crossroads Large map with 32 players. Different game modes will also be accessible, such as Extraction, Elimination and Suppression. The ability to lock out certain weapons or weapon classes is also possible. You can also customize your character with different elements such as body armor, camo, headgear and more. Clan support and stat-tracking is also supported, but beware, these will reset at the launch of the game. Not in the beta? You can still check out our hands-on impressions.

[Thanks, Mark!]

SOCOM beta details: maps, modes, character customization originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Aug 2008 15:00:00 EST.
