As for reasoning, Sega said only that "in the overseas markets, sales of the new titles remained slow as affected by adverse market condition." Best we can tell, that "adverse market condition" refers to our economies all being really, really terrible.<br /><br />The publisher shared sales numbers for its major releases. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> sold 1.63 million copies across four platforms (Wii, PS3, PC, and the 3DS <em>Generations</em> game). <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/mario-and-sonic-at-the-london-2012-olympic-games"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games</em></a> outsold it with 2.39 million copies -- despite not being released in Japan yet, and only being on one platform at the time, the Wii. And, uh, despite being a Mario &amp; Sonic Olympics minigame collection. <em>Hatsune Miku Project Diva Extend</em> for PSP (released in Japan only) was the other named hit, with 290,000 copies.<br /><br />Looking up at Sega's sales by platform, it's worth noting that Sega's single PlayStation Vita release, <em>Virtua Tennis 4</em> (called <em>Power Smash 4</em> in Japan) sold just 10,000 copies between the Vita launch date of December 17 and the end of the year. That ... doesn't seem very good.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/03/segas-home-game-division-posts-losses-mario-and-sonic-a-bright-s/">Sega's home game division posts losses, Mario &amp; Sonic a bright spot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Feb 2012 11:30:00 EST. A whole mess of Sonic the Hedgehog content has rolled onto Steam today. First up, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-cd"><em>Sonic CD</em></a>, which has already debuted on PSN, Xbox Live and mobile platforms, has now made its way to Valve's ubiquitous service. Joining it is <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-the-hedgehog-4-episode-1"><em>Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1</em></a> and the <em>Sonic Generations</em> "Casino Nights" DLC that was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/sonic-generations-casino-nights-pinball-dlc-on-steam-dec-26/">previously scheduled</a> to arrive on December 26.<br />
<br />
Though it's not a Sonic game, Sega's free-to-play <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/spiral-knights"><em>Spiral Knights</em></a> is getting some Sonic-themed content as well. Players can pick up a Metal Sonic costume or a Tails accessory (i.e. a pair of fox tails). <em>Spiral Knights</em> is free, but these items are not. The Metal Sonic costume comes free with Steam copies of <em>Sonic CD</em>, while the Tails accessory will require an in-game energy purchase. Both items are available until February 1.<br />
<br />

Remember <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Spinball"><em>Sonic Spinball</em></a>? Remember its infuriatingly addictive levels and flat-out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbEfadBoE70">fantastic music</a>? Well don't get your hopes up, this is probably not going to be anything like that. Industrious hedgehog lovers who purchased <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> through Steam will have the opportunity to purchase the pinball-mini-game-packing Casino Night Pinball DLC pack on December 26 for $1.59 USD, just in time for the day after Christmas.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/sonic-generations-casino-nights-pinball-dlc-on-steam-dec-26/">Sonic Generations Casino Nights Pinball DLC on Steam Dec. 26</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Dec 2011 23:55:00 EST. It's a game explosion this week and you better get used to it, because the season only gets crazier from here. Up first, Richard, Ludwig and Griffin share their experiences with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-lord-of-the-rings-war-in-the-north"><em>Lord of the Rings: War in the North</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/uncharted-3-drakes-deception"><em>Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>. Guess which one of these games features the protagonist kissing a human woman.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-3"><em>Battlefield 3</em></a> takes the hot seat this week with some tough love. Arthur joins in to explain why a game with so many issues deserves the score he gave it. Alexander and Ben also get in on the multiplayer love-fest.<br />
<br />
And Spoiled Rotten is back. Chris assembled his own team of villains to discuss the ins-and-outs of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/batman-arkham-city"><em>Batman: Arkham City</em></a>. But beware, <em>you're about to get punched</em> with spoilers.<br />

Revisiting two decades of games, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> is pitched as a celebration of Sega's previously pudgy mascot and the timeless appeal of blue skies, checkerboard loops, and things that go "boing." But much like the one Sonic receives in the opening, <em>Generations</em> is closer to a lame birthday party that you attend out of courtesy.<br />
<br />
That feeling you get from playing every Sonic game after Genesis brews as disappointment and eventually becomes sympathy, mostly for the branded custodians at Sonic Team. They can't seem to please anybody, can they? Oh, Sonic's jumping feels wrong. The momentum is messed up over here. It's about exploration, not speed! <em>Guys</em>, the physics of my anthropomorphic blue hedgehog is inaccurate within this segmented fantasy landscape! Even when they make a game -- well, let's say half a game -- dedicated to capturing Sonic as he was, before vocal chords and a third dimension, they still can't win. Why?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/01/sonic-generations-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic Generations review: Run-time compiler</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/01/sonic-generations-review/">Sonic Generations review: Run-time compiler</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 18:30:00 EST. Sega has announced that <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> is breaking pre-order records. Specifically, Generations has officially "exceeded all previous pre-order records from the 20-year Sonic catalog, making it the most anticipated title in Sonic the Hedgehog's iconic history." For what it's worth, we're not really sure if you <em>could</em> pre-order games during the Genesis era, but that doesn't exactly make for an exciting press release.<br />
<br />
Sega also notes that Sonic's 20th Anniversary - and thus Generations - has been heralded by several special events, including the construction of a Sonic-themed playground in Oakland, California, a promotion at Six Flags and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/try-out-sonic-generations-at-e3-sonic-boom-party/">Sonic Boom</a> party at E3. Here's hoping Sega can truly honor the Blue Blur by delivering a game worthy of his glory days.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/27/sonic-generations-pre-orders-exceed-all-previous-sonic-titles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic Generations pre-orders exceed all previous Sonic titles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/27/sonic-generations-pre-orders-exceed-all-previous-sonic-titles/">Sonic Generations pre-orders exceed all previous Sonic titles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 23:00:00 EST. When <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> arrives on Nintendo's 3DS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/sonic-generations-dashes-to-3ds-november-22/">this November</a>, it's going to let you show off to the world how <em>totally into Sonic</em> you are. That is, if you <strike>walk by</strike> spindash past other folks with a 3DS copy of the game somewhere out there in the real world. Sega revealed the game's 3DS-specific Spot Pass features this week, which it detailed as bi-functional -- trade missions with friends and exchange "profile cards."<br />
<br />
Apparently, <em>Sonic Generations</em> comes with 100 extra missions that can be unlocked via Spot Pass, though the extra missions consist of the game's main levels, albeit modified with specific objectives (kill a specific type of enemy, time trials, etc.) As for the profile cards, 3DS gamers will be able to show off their percentage completion of <em>Generations</em>, as well as sharing various other info (messages like, "Eggman is #1!," for instance). Might we suggest adding your <em>killer</em> Sonic fanfic into that messaging area?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/26/heres-how-sonic-generations-3ds-specific-features-will-work/">Here's how Sonic Generations' 3DS-specific features will work</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Oct 2011 20:00:00 EST. Today has been a pretty good news day for the dusty old codgers here at Joystiq; not only will the original <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/23/sonic-generations-will-include-the-original-sonic-the-hedgehog/">included</a> in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> as an unlockable, but Steam has gone and sweetened the nostalgia pot by giving away <em>Sonic 3D Blast</em> and <em>Sonic 3 and Knuckles</em> with every <em>Generations</em> <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/71340/?snr=1_4_4__100_2">pre-order</a>.<br />
<br />
<em>Sonic Generations</em> hits Steam November 4, but the pre-order bonuses become instantly available at check-out. And look at it this way, even if <em>Generations</em> ends up being a flop, you can tell yourself you spent 30 dollars on two Genesis ports, which is a much more palatable sense of disappointment.<br />
<br />

The original <em>Sonic The Hedgehog</em> will be available as a complete, unlockable game in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>, Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka said during a panel at Paris Games Week. Iizuka didn't specify how exactly to unlock <em>Sonic The Hedgehog</em>, but we assume it has something to do with curling into a tight ball and rolling up some loop-the-loops at breakneck speeds. <em>You</em>, not Sonic. This is a really special unlock, so we expect you'll really have to <em>earn </em>it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/23/sonic-generations-will-include-the-original-sonic-the-hedgehog/">Sonic Generations will include the original Sonic The Hedgehog (if you can unlock it)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:30:00 EST. We knew <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> was coming out on PS3 and Xbox 360 on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/13/sonic-generations-hitting-ps3-and-360-on-nov-1/">November 1</a>, but Sega has been quiet about the release window for the dual-screen, dual-hedgehog 3DS version.<br />
<br />
Today, Sega dismissed the building <a href="http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&amp;id=163782">rumors</a> that <em>Generations</em> on 3DS had been delayed until next year. The publisher announced that the 3DS game (which has almost entirely <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/all-sonic-generations-3ds-levels-to-be-platform-exclusive-save/">exclusive content</a>) is just a <em>bit</em> slower than its speed-obsessed console counterparts, and as a result it'll hit stores on November 22.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/sonic-generations-dashes-to-3ds-november-22/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic Generations dashes to 3DS November 22</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/sonic-generations-dashes-to-3ds-november-22/">Sonic Generations dashes to 3DS November 22</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 07:30:00 EST. Sega is sending out a second demo for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>, its multi-year mascot mishmash coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 1. The new demo, which should be available on Xbox Live Marketplace starting tomorrow (followed by a North American PSN version on October 25), revisits the checkerboard loops of Green Hill Zone, this time with a "modern Sonic" component.<br />
<br />
The classic version of the level (see: slightly rotund Sonic) will also be available in this demo, just in case you missed it in the first round back in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/report-sonic-generations-demo-hitting-psn-xbla-june-23/">June</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/new-ish-sonic-generations-demo-coming-to-ps3-360-starting-this/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New(ish) Sonic Generations demo coming to PS3, 360 starting this week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/new-ish-sonic-generations-demo-coming-to-ps3-360-starting-this/">New(ish) Sonic Generations demo coming to PS3, 360 starting this week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST. <br />
The latest <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> trailer approaches the danger zone for a Sonic game -- it focuses on characters other than Sonic. But since it's all bosses and rivals instead of Sonic's infamous cadre of support characters, we can forgive the use of non-Sonic characters.<br />
<br />
Besides, this trailer <em>somehow</em> manages to make Shadow the Hedgehog and even Silver the Hedgehog seem cool and a little menacing. Even the chubby, Genesis-era version of Metal Sonic comes off as pretty cool. Good job, Sega trailer editor!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/14/sonics-rivals-make-their-arrivals-in-sonic-generations-trailer/">Sonic's rivals make their arrivals in Sonic Generations trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 15:30:00 EST. After <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/sonic-generations-confirmed-for-pc-213393.phtml">Destructoid</a> spotted PC listings for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> on Direct2Drive and Green Man Gaming, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-11-shops-list-sonic-generations-for-pc">Eurogamer</a> has confirmed that the upcoming Sonic title is indeed headed to the platform.<br />
<br />
The PC version will feature Steamworks (including Steam Cloud saves) and stereoscopic 3D support. It will be available in Europe on November 4 and, presumably, will arrive in North America on November 1 alongside the console releases.<br />
<br />
Here's hoping that beefy gaming setups can make the Blue Blur's PC outing a little less ... blurry.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/11/sonic-generations-speeding-to-pc/">Sonic Generations speeding to PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 11:30:00 EST. How confident is Sega in <em>Sonic Generations</em>? Well, the company's willing to build in a piece -- and thus, a reminder -- of 2006's <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>. We hope the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/02/fast-hedgehog-slow-loading/">loading times</a> aren't carrying over alongside that game's "Crisis City" level.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/sonic-generations-trailer-reaches-the-modern-era-of-werewolve/">Sonic Generations trailer reaches the 'modern' era (of werewolves and girlfriends)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 15:20:00 EST. The latest <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> trailer is targeted at a specific kind of nostalgia: for the era in which you were running past killer whales in sunny skies -- when you were flying around at the speed of sound, and following your rainbow.<br />
<br />
And, in keeping with the Dreamcast-era theme of the trailer, our old pal Shadow the Hedgehog makes a dramatic entrance at the end of the thing, with no hint of the cars or guns of his later solo outing. He's in the game as a "rival," so he <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/dont-worry-many-of-sonics-friends-will-be-in-generations-b/">won't be playable</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/30/sonic-generations-trailer-introduces-the-dreamcast-generation/">Sonic Generations trailer introduces the Dreamcast generation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 16:30:00 EST. We know that <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> represents a sort of back-to-basics approach, with a focus on classic and modern Sonic gameplay. But is it so back-to-basics that it's devoid of Sonic's extended cast of characters? We asked director Hiroshi Miyamoto if Sonic's friends would show up in the new game.<br />
<br />
"We really wanted to encapsulate 20 years of Sonic characters," Miyamoto told Joystiq, "so we've got those really memorable bosses, we've got memorable rivals as well that you can play against; so far we've announced Metal Sonic and Shadow."<br />
<br />
In addition to those adversarial characters, "There's many friends in there as well." He added something that almost made us really scared: "We've tried to include as many friends as possible." Oh ...<br />
<br />
"They're not playable, but there are many friends." Oh!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/dont-worry-many-of-sonics-friends-will-be-in-generations-b/">Don't worry, 'many' of Sonic's friends will be in Generations (but not playable)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 10:30:00 EST. While every game ever battles it out for a lucrative spot in yet another financially ruinous November, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> grabs the first available date for its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Sega's brisk, blast-processed stroll down memory lane will launch on November 1 in North America, and November 4 in Europe (where you can also obtain an elaborate <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/europes-sonic-generations-ce-prevents-your-death-with-inclusion/">special edition</a>).<br />
<br />
Sega has only confirmed the launch dates for Sonic's console outings at this time. The 3DS version, which features <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/all-sonic-generations-3ds-levels-to-be-platform-exclusive-save/">platform-exclusive levels</a> and a two-player versus mode, is scheduled for "late 2011."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/13/sonic-generations-hitting-ps3-and-360-on-nov-1/">Sonic Generations hitting PS3 and 360 on Nov. 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 16:00:00 EST. If you're a long-time Sonic fan, it's likely that Sega has already <em>gotten</em> you with <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>, which celebrates the character's history. But now, the publisher has smartly guaranteed that all those same fans will upgrade to the new collector's edition -- by including a gold ring, something that every Sonic fan exhibits a Pavlovian response to. Ironically, it appears to be a paperweight, and thus designed to make things <em>stop</em> moving.<br />
<br />
Along with that trinket, the set includes a statuette of Sonic and his pal Sonic, an artbook with unseen illustrations from the series, a 20th anniversary soundtrack, and a documentary called "History of Sonic: Birth of an Icon." Oh, and there's a PS3 or Xbox 360 copy of the actual game, and a DLC voucher.<br />
<br />
This is even more stuff than was included in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/13/sonic-generations-special-edition-spotted-at-game/">retail listings</a> for the Collector's Edition. But a few important things won't be part of the deal: there won't be a Collector's Edition for the 3DS version, and there won't be an American release either. This is for Europe only.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/europes-sonic-generations-ce-prevents-your-death-with-inclusion/">Europe's Sonic Generations CE prevents your death with inclusion of a gold ring</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 15:30:00 EST. Sonic the Hedgehog is more than just a blue creature who runs quickly. He's a mascot, a hero, an inspiration to many ... and now, in honor of the 20th anniversary of his first game, he's a <em>guitar</em>. The Japanese branch of guitar company ESP has partnered with Sega to make a limited edition Sonic <a href="http://www.espguitars.co.jp/sonic-the-hedgehog-guitar/">electric guitar</a> designed to look like Sega musician Jun Senoue's. It features the hedgehog's smirking face on the body, and his shoe on the headstock.<br />
<br />
It'll be available through the end of the year for &yen;136,500 ($1782). After the break, Senoue demonstrates with a little Sonic music. You can find more of his playing at the <a href="http://www.espguitars.co.jp/sonic-the-hedgehog-guitar/">ESP site</a>.<br />
<br />
If you're looking for a much, much cheaper collectible, the Belgian Post is launching a series of <a href="http://www.polygonallawn.com/2011/08/sonic-stamps-from-belgian-post.html">Sonic stamps</a> on August 29.<br />
<br />

After so many disappointing <em>Sonic</em> games, Sega is picking a safer formula and remaking chunks of old <em>Sonic</em> games, almost pixel-by-pixel. At least, that appears to be the case in this <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> video from Gameswelt.tv. It looks like <em>Sonic Generations</em> will be receiving the special edition treatment. At least, it appears that way in the UK, where retailer GAME has posted PS3 and Xbox 360 listings for <em>Sonic Generations: Special Edition</em>.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.game.co.uk/Games/PlayStation-3/Platform/Sonic-Generations-Special-Edition/~r355906/?s=sonic+generations">PS3 version</a> includes a bonus "Casino Night" level, which recreates the pinball-themed level from <em>Sonic the Hedgehog 2</em>. In addition to the bonus level, the <a href="http://www.game.co.uk/Games/Xbox-360/Platform/Sonic-Generations-Special-Edition/~r355905/?s=sonic+generations">Xbox 360 version</a> includes a Super Sonic Avatar outfit and a dashboard theme.<br />
<br />
We've contacted Sega to see if the Special Edition is speeding its way to America as well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/13/sonic-generations-special-edition-spotted-at-game/">Sonic Generations: Special Edition spotted at GAME</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Jul 2011 18:30:00 EST. Sega's going all out for Sonic's 20th birthday, buying him an enormous balloon, building him an iOS App, and releasing a demo of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. You can charge through a new(ish) Green Hill Zone with original (chubby) Sonic, and can sample the stereoscopic 3D mode while you're at it. Based on what we played, it doesn't appear as though the flipside of that level could be played with modern (skinny) Sonic. Luckily, we have 20 days to see if it's buried in there as an easter egg.<br />
<br />
Sega released a free iOS App as well, though it's only found its way to the Japanese App Store thus far -- we've checked with Sega to make sure it's coming here as well. According to <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/23/sonic_20_anniversary/">Andriasang</a>, it'll only be available for the next six months. The app is composed of the first stage of <em>Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1</em>, a minigame named "Sonic the Sketchhog," a news feed, and an area for "weekly wallpaper downloads."<br />
<br />
Sales are also kicking off on a variety of Sonic titles for XBLA/PSN, which run from today through July 28. And yes, this Thanksgiving, Sonic -- in his skinnier form -- will once again appear in the Macy's parade, taunting our turkey-swelled bellies with his simultaneously svelte <em>and</em> inflated figure.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/sonic-generations-demo-out-now-gone-in-20-days-ios-app-out-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic Generations demo out now, gone in 20 days; iOS App out in Japan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/sonic-generations-demo-out-now-gone-in-20-days-ios-app-out-in/">Sonic Generations demo out now, gone in 20 days; iOS App out in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 10:36:00 EST. A report by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/22/sonic_generations/">Andriasang</a> claims that Sega has chosen tomorrow, June 23 to launch the demo for its remastered retro remix, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>. Although it doesn't cite a source for the information, the site says that the demo will be available for PS3 and Xbox 360, the latter requiring an Xbox Live Gold account to download. Additionally, the one-level trial game will evidently expire on July 12, vanishing from both e-stores and disabling itself if it's been downloaded.<br />
<br />
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/06/22/heads-up-game-store-update-22nd-june-2011/">listed the demo</a> as part of tomorrow's European PlayStation Store update, lending a lot of credence to this news, although a representative for Sega America couldn't comment when asked by Joystiq if the demo is planned to hit the US tomorrow, too. It's entirely likely -- though not confirmed -- that the demo's release is being prepared as a surprise to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the <em>Sonic</em> franchise, which is, conveniently, June 23.<br />
<br />
PS3 owners in Japan would need another surprise tomorrow in order to play the demo, Andriasang points out -- that country's PSN is still offline, with no indication it will be brought back into service within the next 24 hours.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>The <em>Sonic Generations</em> demo is now available on Xbox Live -- for the next 20 days.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/report-sonic-generations-demo-hitting-psn-xbla-june-23/">Report: Sonic Generations demo hitting PSN, XBLM on June 23</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 20:20:00 EST. In celebration of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/19/sonic-adventure-and-sequel-get-20th-anniversary-soundtracks/"><em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>'s 20th anniversary</a>, Sega is making some pretty slick figurines. They "will not be sold anywhere," <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2011/06/16/sonic-the-hedgehog-20th-anniversary-figurine/">according to Sega</a>, and only one thousand are being manufactured. Presumably, the only way to get one will be via contests or promotions. The company didn't offer any specs, though the figure appears to be fairly large -- check out the photo after the break for reference.<br />
	<br />
	Fun fact: There are two versions of the figurine, one for the United States and another for other parts of the world (pictured above). The two versions are nearly identical apart from one small detail. See if you can guess what it is.</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/sonic-20th-anniversary-figurine-is-looking-sharp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic 20th anniversary figurine is looking sharp</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/sonic-20th-anniversary-figurine-is-looking-sharp/">Sonic 20th anniversary figurine is looking sharp</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 21:09:00 EST. After showing E3 attendees a new level in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations">Sonic Generations</a>, </em>game producer Takashi Iizuka highlighted some of the extra content that can only be found in the 3DS version.
<meta charset="utf-8" />
"One important thing to say about the Nintendo 3DS version is that besides Green Hill Zone, which is the starting zone on all versions, all the stages on the Nintendo 3DS version will be different from the stages that are seen in the PS3 and 360," Iizuka said.<br />
<br />
<em>Generations</em> will revisit and remix levels from Sonic's entire history, including his Genesis and Dreamcast outings, but only the 3DS game may borrow stages from older handheld games. "For the PS3 and 360, none of the stages we're selecting are going to be from the handheld," Iizuka explained during a brief Q&amp;A session. "However, on 3DS we're looking at picking stages from handheld as well."<br />
<br />
The portable version of <em>Generations</em> will also offer a special stage, a two-player versus mode and a battery life that should effortlessly summon nostalgia for Sonic's Game Gear days.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations-3ds-e3-2011/">Sonic Generations (3DS, E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations-3ds-e3-2011/#4202432"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/23268generations3dsboss1005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations-3ds-e3-2011/#4202438"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/23269generations3dsz1act1001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations-3ds-e3-2011/#4202439"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/23270generations3dsz1act1003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/all-sonic-generations-3ds-levels-to-be-platform-exclusive-save/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>All Sonic Generations 3DS levels to be platform-exclusive (save for Green Hill Zone)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/all-sonic-generations-3ds-levels-to-be-platform-exclusive-save/">All Sonic Generations 3DS levels to be platform-exclusive (save for Green Hill Zone)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 09:30:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/nintendo-power-cover-confirms-sonic-generations-3ds-new-shinobi/">coming to the 3DS</a>, as revealed in the last issue of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/nintendo-power-cover-confirms-sonic-generations-3ds-new-shinobi/">Nintendo Power</a>. A press release issued by Sega reveals that the handheld version won't be exactly the same as its PS3/Xbox counterpart -- a concept that should be comfortable to people anticipating a game about two different versions of the same character.<br />
<br />
According to the announcement, the 3DS game has new levels designed specifically for that version, along with an unlockable 3DS-exclusive 'special stage.' <em>Generations</em> also uses the 3DS's StreetPass communication feature to unlock "bonus material" when two players' 3DSes come within communication range.<br />

Both the console and 3DS <em>Sonic Generations</em> won't be out until November. Following standard <em> Sonic</em> protocol, we're not going to get our hopes up for either yet.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/sonic-generations-3ds-has-exclusive-levels-streetpass-bonuses/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic Generations 3DS has exclusive levels, StreetPass bonuses</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/sonic-generations-3ds-has-exclusive-levels-streetpass-bonuses/">Sonic Generations 3DS has exclusive levels, StreetPass bonuses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 18:30:00 EST. We've recently seen some evidence of two Sega 3DS projects that have yet to be officially announced: a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/sonic-generations-listed-for-3ds-pc-in-earnings-report/">3DS (and PC) version</a> of <em>Sonic Generations</em>, and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/24/resume-reveals-griptonite-working-on-shinobi-for-3ds/">new <em>Shinobi</em> game</a>. It turns out that the latest issue of Nintendo Power announces them both before Sega has a chance to fire up the press release machine.<br />
<br />
The cover of the June 2011 issue, as found on <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=431255">NeoGAF</a>, specifically notes that <em>Sonic Generations</em> "speeds onto the 3DS" just in time for the <em>sometimes</em> pudgy hedgehog's 20th anniversary. <em>Shinobi</em>, however, is only listed as a "classic revival."<br />
<br />
Additionally, a teaser of the forthcoming <em>Shinobi</em> game appears to have leaked on <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly200T_o41A&amp;feature=player_embedded">YouTube</a>, posted yesterday by user "greatshow482" -- the user's only upload. Beyond affirming Griptonite Games as the developer, the teaser confirms a <em>Shinobi</em> game "re-imagined for the Nintendo 3DS."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/nintendo-power-cover-confirms-sonic-generations-3ds-new-shinobi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo Power cover confirms Sonic Generations 3DS, new Shinobi</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/nintendo-power-cover-confirms-sonic-generations-3ds-new-shinobi/">Nintendo Power cover confirms Sonic Generations 3DS, new Shinobi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 10:09:00 EST. A Sega Sammy Holdings <a href="http://www.segasammy.co.jp/japanese/pdf/release/20110516pre_j_final.pdf">earnings report</a> (PDF) may have outed plans to release <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> on PC and 3DS. Spotted by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/05/17/sonic_generations_3ds/">Andriasang</a>, a section highlighting titles planned for Sega's current fiscal year includes a listing for <em>Sonic Generations</em> on 3DS and PC as well as the already announced releases for Xbox and PS3.<br />
<br />
Given the history of portable <em>Sonic</em> titles, the 3DS listing certainly makes sense. Joystiq has contacted Sega for comment.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/sonic-generations-listed-for-3ds-pc-in-earnings-report/">Sonic Generations listed for 3DS, PC in earnings report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 May 2011 11:30:00 EST. Sega's throwing a Sonic party during E3, offering perhaps the best possible situation in which to try out <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>. If you go to Club Nokia on June 8, play the game, and find, to your delight, that it really does bridge the gap between "classic" and "modern" <em>Sonic,</em> that its physics simulation is above reproach, and that it's truly <em>fun</em><em> --</em> you can then immediately celebrate Sega's triumphant return to form with a gathering of other euphoric <em>Sonic</em> fans.<br />
<br />
If the game turns out to be disappointing, there'll probably be free food! As well as "
<meta charset="utf-8" />
exclusive <em>Generations</em> collector's merchandise!" If you want to go, keep an eye on the <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/usa/category/sonic-boom/">Sega blog</a> for your chance to reserve a pass. The first 500 passes have already been snapped up by appropriately speedy people!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/try-out-sonic-generations-at-e3-sonic-boom-party/">Try out Sonic Generations at E3 'Sonic Boom' party</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 May 2011 12:30:00 EST. Though Sonic's new outing <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> may still be a ways off, it looks like we may get an early double dose of hedgehog. Sega is planning to release a demo of the game, according to <a href="http://www.classification.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/3ee9cf339ddee09eca2575ca000be1e3/d437ba7b175c7225ca257888005d719a?OpenDocument">Australia's Classification Board</a>, which recently awarded the demo a family-friendly G rating.<br />
<br />
It would seem like good news for Sonic fans, though it's unusual for most game rating organizations to assign a rating to an individual demo. Ratings are usually reserved only for individual retail products. One possible implication is that the demo could (<em>could</em>, mind you) be a paid product of some sort, or perhaps bundled with an upcoming Sega game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/sonic-generations-demo-classified-in-australia/">Sonic Generations demo classified in Australia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 May 2011 18:28:00 EST. Sonic the Hedgehog may easily outrun a spring chicken, but he's not exactly "young" anymore. The blue dash turns 20 this year, having only lost weight with age; and to celebrate the big <em>two zero</em>, Sega is releasing <em>Sonic Generations</em> for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It's a full price retail game, coming this holiday, that pays homage to the storied history of Mr. the Hedgehog.<br />

Late last week I played through the first level of Sonic's cross-generational platformer on Xbox 360 -- a "reimagining" of Sonic's Green Hill Zone -- using both old (chubby) and new (skinny) Sonic. Here's how the pairing works: each level of <em>Sonic Generations</em> is playable with either character, and both offer different routes and perspectives.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations/">Sonic Generations (first screens)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations/#4068238"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/5681sonicgenerationslogoen-1303220496_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations/#4068237"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/5679sonic-1303220495_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations/#4068241"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/22798sgghzcl041_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations/#4068242"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/22799sgghzcl071_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-generations/#4068243"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/22800sgghzcl161_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/sonic-generations-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic Generations preview: Chubby reign</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/sonic-generations-preview/">Sonic Generations preview: Chubby reign</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Apr 2011 12:35:00 EST. Users on the <a href="http://board.sonicstadium.org/topic/7767-2011s-three-new-sonic-titles/page__st__1360__p__268218#entry268218">Sonic Stadium</a> forums have captured what appears to be leaked (and temporary) box art for two upcoming Sega games, one of which features a logo for the new, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/new-sonic-the-hedgehog-game-revealed-speeding-to-xbox-360-and-p/">recently teased</a> Sonic game. It's set to be called "Generations," which fits in with early <a href="http://www.tssznews.com/2011/04/04/report-sonic-generations-domain-names-registered-to-sega/">domain registrations</a> allegedly done by Sega, as well the trailer's depiction of both the original (see: potbellied) and redesigned hedgehog hero.<br />
<br />
A second leaked cover also indicates that Sega is working on <em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games </em>for Wii. No surprise there, as the first Mario and Sonic sold over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/world-to-blame-mario-and-sonic-olympics-sells-5-million-units/2">five million copies</a> and its winter-based sequel did another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/mario-sonic-and-profits-in-segas-fiscal-2010/">six and a half million</a>. We've contacted Sega for comment.<br />
