Nostalgia is a powerful thing, friends.<br /><br />Well, the fact that <em>Sonic CD</em> is arguably the best 2D Sonic game of all time probably has something to do with it too, but we all know most of us bought it just to hear <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPyOLV_rGo8">Sonic Boom</a> again. Hop past the break for the full list of December's best-selling PSN titles.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/21/sonic-cd-was-decembers-top-psn-game/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic CD was December's top PSN game</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/21/sonic-cd-was-decembers-top-psn-game/">Sonic CD was December's top PSN game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 13:30:00 EST. Sega of Europe just opened a new online Sonic the Hedgehog <a href="http://www.sonicmerchandise.com/gb/">shop</a>, allowing you to get all the backpacks, school supplies, figurines and other hedgehog-bearing material you could possibly want. Need a figure of one of the <a href="http://www.sonicmerchandise.com/gb/sonic-the-hedgehog-toys-collectables/3-sonic-motobug-badnik.html">robot bug enemies</a>, or <a href="http://www.sonicmerchandise.com/gb/sonic-the-hedgehog-toys-collectables/jet-free-rider-board.html">Jet the Hawk on a hoverboard</a>? You got it! Need <a href="http://www.sonicmerchandise.com/gb/sonic-the-hedgehog-apparel/blue-beanie.html">Sonic the Headhog</a>? No problem!<br />
<br />
Right now, the shop is only available in Europe -- and offering 15 percent off almost everything -- but Sega plans to open an American version later, for those of you stateside looking to get a <a href="http://www.sonicmerchandise.com/gb/sonic-the-hedgehog-back-to-school/sonic-ringbinder.html">ring binder</a> (for paper, not rings).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/18/sonic-the-hedgehog-store-offers-one-stop-jet-the-hawk-memorabili/">Sonic the Hedgehog store offers one-stop Jet the Hawk memorabilia shopping</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 16:00:00 EST. The ninth day of Xbox Marketplace holiday deals rings in several <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> discounts. The blue mammal's escapades in <em>Sonic 4</em> and <em>Sonic Adventure</em> are 320 MSP ($4) each, a 60 percent savings, and his Genesis games are down 60 percent, at 160 MSP ($2) apiece.<br />
<br />
The discounts are only available today, so run and catch 'em before they're gone -- just don't <a href="http://dumbrunningsonic.tumblr.com/">run like an idiotic Sonic</a>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-4-episode-1-casino-streets/">Sonic 4: Episode 1 (Casino Streets Zone)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-4-episode-1-casino-streets/#3392655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/sonic4casinozoneimage1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-4-episode-1-casino-streets/#3392656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/sonic4casinozoneimage2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-4-episode-1-casino-streets/#3392657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/sonic4casinozoneimage3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-4-episode-1-casino-streets/#3392658"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/sonic4casinozoneimage4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-4-episode-1-casino-streets/#3392659"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/sonic4casinozoneimage5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/28/sonic-sale-today-on-xbox-live/">Sonic sale today on Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 12:59:00 EST. Takashi Nishiyama has been in the game for about as long as "the game" has existed. Responsible for <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_Patrol">Moon Patrol</a></em>, <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_(video_game)">Street Fighter</a></em>, <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_Fury:_King_of_Fighters">Fatal Fury</a></em>, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo_Geo">Neo Geo</a> and more Sonic games than you can shake a stick at, Nishiyama's design portfolio spans 30 years and includes some of the most fundamental design philosophies that still serve as a foundation for many genres to this day.<br />
<br />
His company, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dimps">Dimps</a>, has made a name for itself developing titles for other publishers' IPs; Dragon Ball Z, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter, etc. After nearly twelve years of development-for-hire work, however, Dimps is looking to branch out and create its own original IPs, according to statements made by Nishiyama during <a href="http://www.1up.com/features/the-man-who-created-street-fighter">an interview with 1UP</a>.<br />
<br />
"I feel that it's time that we need to create our own social and browser IPs," Nishiyama said. "We're going to start with things that have more manageable budgets, like social and browser games. I believe that's more realistic."<br />
<br />
Nishiyama sees mobile platforms as a lower-risk entry platform for a new IP, as compared with the astronomical costs associated with console game development. His company must be cautious, however, because creating original IPs will position Dimps as competition to publishers, rather than a developmental ally: "As soon as we announce that we're creating original IP, we become their competitor. So we need to approach it carefully and be sensitive to the politics involved."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/17/dimps-expanding-into-original-ips-for-mobile-and-social-platform/">Dimps expanding into original IPs for mobile and social platforms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 17 Dec 2011 13:30:00 EST. Sega has released a bunch of <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> game soundtracks to iTunes, allowing you to speed up your workday with appropriate background music.<br />
<br />
The available albums include the Japanese <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sonic-the-hedgehog-cd-original/id481138176">soundtrack</a> to <em>Sonic CD</em>, featuring a couple of new arrangements by Crush 40; <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sonic-adventure-original-soundtrack/id481138779"><em>Sonic Adventure 1 </em></a>and <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/supporting-me-...for-biolizard/id481136982?i=481137062&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D4"><em>2</em></a> collections for rainbow followers; <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sonic-heroes-original-soundtrack/id481145508"><em>Heroes</em></a>; and a collection of "greatest hits" called <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-best-of-crush-40-super/id481140520">Super Sonic Songs - The Best of Crush 40</a>. Sega even announced two non-Sonic-related projects from series musicians: "<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/song-of-hope-single/id481140360">Song of Hope</a>," a charity single by Crush 40, and an <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-works/id481144307">album</a> of performances by composer Jun Senoue. Ever wanted to hear a Sega musician from Japan play "The Star-Spangled Banner" on guitar? You do now!<br />
<br />
Because we wanted a nice image for the header of this post, and because we haven't had an excuse to talk about this yet, the image above is Good Smile Company's <a href="http://www.tomopop.com/sonic-nendoroid-is-up-for-pre-order--22359.phtml">Nendoroid Sonic the Hedgehog figure</a>, coming out in Japan next April. The original <em>Sonic The Hedgehog</em> will be available as a complete, unlockable game in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>, Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka said during a panel at Paris Games Week. Iizuka didn't specify how exactly to unlock <em>Sonic The Hedgehog</em>, but we assume it has something to do with curling into a tight ball and rolling up some loop-the-loops at breakneck speeds. <em>You</em>, not Sonic. This is a really special unlock, so we expect you'll really have to <em>earn </em>it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/23/sonic-generations-will-include-the-original-sonic-the-hedgehog/">Sonic Generations will include the original Sonic The Hedgehog (if you can unlock it)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:30:00 EST. Sega is sending out a second demo for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>, its multi-year mascot mishmash coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 1. The new demo, which should be available on Xbox Live Marketplace starting tomorrow (followed by a North American PSN version on October 25), revisits the checkerboard loops of Green Hill Zone, this time with a "modern Sonic" component.<br />
<br />
The classic version of the level (see: slightly rotund Sonic) will also be available in this demo, just in case you missed it in the first round back in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/report-sonic-generations-demo-hitting-psn-xbla-june-23/">June</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/new-ish-sonic-generations-demo-coming-to-ps3-360-starting-this/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New(ish) Sonic Generations demo coming to PS3, 360 starting this week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/new-ish-sonic-generations-demo-coming-to-ps3-360-starting-this/">New(ish) Sonic Generations demo coming to PS3, 360 starting this week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST. How confident is Sega in <em>Sonic Generations</em>? Well, the company's willing to build in a piece -- and thus, a reminder -- of 2006's <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>. We hope the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/02/fast-hedgehog-slow-loading/">loading times</a> aren't carrying over alongside that game's "Crisis City" level.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/sonic-generations-trailer-reaches-the-modern-era-of-werewolve/">Sonic Generations trailer reaches the 'modern' era (of werewolves and girlfriends)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 15:20:00 EST. Sonic the Hedgehog is more than just a blue creature who runs quickly. He's a mascot, a hero, an inspiration to many ... and now, in honor of the 20th anniversary of his first game, he's a <em>guitar</em>. The Japanese branch of guitar company ESP has partnered with Sega to make a limited edition Sonic <a href="http://www.espguitars.co.jp/sonic-the-hedgehog-guitar/">electric guitar</a> designed to look like Sega musician Jun Senoue's. It features the hedgehog's smirking face on the body, and his shoe on the headstock.<br />
<br />
It'll be available through the end of the year for &yen;136,500 ($1782). After the break, Senoue demonstrates with a little Sonic music. You can find more of his playing at the <a href="http://www.espguitars.co.jp/sonic-the-hedgehog-guitar/">ESP site</a>.<br />
<br />
If you're looking for a much, much cheaper collectible, the Belgian Post is launching a series of <a href="http://www.polygonallawn.com/2011/08/sonic-stamps-from-belgian-post.html">Sonic stamps</a> on August 29.<br />
<br />

Sega's going all out for Sonic's 20th birthday, buying him an enormous balloon, building him an iOS App, and releasing a demo of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a> on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. You can charge through a new(ish) Green Hill Zone with original (chubby) Sonic, and can sample the stereoscopic 3D mode while you're at it. Based on what we played, it doesn't appear as though the flipside of that level could be played with modern (skinny) Sonic. Luckily, we have 20 days to see if it's buried in there as an easter egg.<br />
<br />
Sega released a free iOS App as well, though it's only found its way to the Japanese App Store thus far -- we've checked with Sega to make sure it's coming here as well. According to <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/23/sonic_20_anniversary/">Andriasang</a>, it'll only be available for the next six months. The app is composed of the first stage of <em>Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1</em>, a minigame named "Sonic the Sketchhog," a news feed, and an area for "weekly wallpaper downloads."<br />
<br />
Sales are also kicking off on a variety of Sonic titles for XBLA/PSN, which run from today through July 28. And yes, this Thanksgiving, Sonic -- in his skinnier form -- will once again appear in the Macy's parade, taunting our turkey-swelled bellies with his simultaneously svelte <em>and</em> inflated figure.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/sonic-generations-demo-out-now-gone-in-20-days-ios-app-out-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic Generations demo out now, gone in 20 days; iOS App out in Japan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/sonic-generations-demo-out-now-gone-in-20-days-ios-app-out-in/">Sonic Generations demo out now, gone in 20 days; iOS App out in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 10:36:00 EST. A report by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/22/sonic_generations/">Andriasang</a> claims that Sega has chosen tomorrow, June 23 to launch the demo for its remastered retro remix, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>. Although it doesn't cite a source for the information, the site says that the demo will be available for PS3 and Xbox 360, the latter requiring an Xbox Live Gold account to download. Additionally, the one-level trial game will evidently expire on July 12, vanishing from both e-stores and disabling itself if it's been downloaded.<br />
<br />
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/06/22/heads-up-game-store-update-22nd-june-2011/">listed the demo</a> as part of tomorrow's European PlayStation Store update, lending a lot of credence to this news, although a representative for Sega America couldn't comment when asked by Joystiq if the demo is planned to hit the US tomorrow, too. It's entirely likely -- though not confirmed -- that the demo's release is being prepared as a surprise to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the <em>Sonic</em> franchise, which is, conveniently, June 23.<br />
<br />
PS3 owners in Japan would need another surprise tomorrow in order to play the demo, Andriasang points out -- that country's PSN is still offline, with no indication it will be brought back into service within the next 24 hours.<br />
<br />

	In celebration of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/19/sonic-adventure-and-sequel-get-20th-anniversary-soundtracks/"><em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>'s 20th anniversary</a>, Sega is making some pretty slick figurines. They "will not be sold anywhere," <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2011/06/16/sonic-the-hedgehog-20th-anniversary-figurine/">according to Sega</a>, and only one thousand are being manufactured. Presumably, the only way to get one will be via contests or promotions. The company didn't offer any specs, though the figure appears to be fairly large -- check out the photo after the break for reference.<br />
	<br />
	Fun fact: There are two versions of the figurine, one for the United States and another for other parts of the world (pictured above). The two versions are nearly identical apart from one small detail. See if you can guess what it is.</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/sonic-20th-anniversary-figurine-is-looking-sharp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic 20th anniversary figurine is looking sharp</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/sonic-20th-anniversary-figurine-is-looking-sharp/">Sonic 20th anniversary figurine is looking sharp</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 21:09:00 EST. YouTube user ProtonX3 has released a series of videos demonstrating a reportedly canceled Sonic the Hedgehog hoverboarding game for the original Xbox, entitled <em>Sonic Extreme</em> (not to be confused with <a href="http://youtu.be/63jutrGDbro"><em>Sonic X-Treme</em></a>). Not to cast any aspersions on the potential merits of the game, but the same engine was also used to create a skateboarding game <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I58t-EUjY-k">starring anthropomorphic thumbs</a> (also canceled, apparently). But hey, it probably would've been better than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-free-riders"><em>Sonic Free Riders</em></a>, right?<br />

The soundtracks to the Dreamcast's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/sonic-adventures"><em>Sonic Adventure</em></a> games are being re-released in Japan to celebrate <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/03/sega-teases-sonic-and-puyo-puyo-anniversary-projects/">the 20th anniversary</a> of the first game's arrival back in 1991. The track listing isn't <a href="http://www.tssznews.com/2011/04/14/cover-art-tracklist-for-sonic-adventure-20th-anniversary-edition-soundtrack-revealed/">the full version of the soundtrack</a>, evidently, but the first disc will have the <em>classics</em>, including <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDpZ9Qg761I&amp;feature=related">the "It Doesn't Matter" theme</a> as well as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH_MCPcjxP0&amp;feature=related">"Open Your Heart."</a> The <em>Sonic Adventure</em> CD is due out on May 18, with <em>Sonic Adventure 2</em> following on June 22.<br />
<br />
CDJapan will <a href="http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WWCE-31248">be selling both</a> for about $27, and Amazon Japan also <a href="http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B004LZS764?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=274&amp;creativeASIN=B004LZS764&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=ebmato-22&amp;creative=7399">has preorders available</a>. Though your memory of <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> may have tarnished over the past few, murky years, we'd wager you've lost no love for the franchise's earliest anthems. If that is indeed the case, you'll be pleased to introduce your ears to Overclocked Remix's latest, totally free project: <a href="http://sos.ocremix.org/"><em>The Sound of Speed</em></a>, a tribute album for the original <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> featuring 13 original arrangements based on Masato Nakamura's iconic score.<br />
<br />
Did we mention that it's free? We're fairly certain that we did, but we were confused, because you're still sitting here, reading this, instead of visiting OC Remix's site, and downloading, and listening. Did you miss the link? Look, <a href="http://sos.ocremix.org/download.php">here it is again</a>. We literally can't think of anything else we can do. <em>Help us help you</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/overclocked-remix-releases-free-sonic-the-sound-of-speed-album/">Overclocked Remix releases free Sonic: The Sound of Speed album</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 03:00:00 EST. There is no "both" or "either" when it comes to Sonic size preference. This week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/new-sonic-the-hedgehog-game-revealed-speeding-to-xbox-360-and-p/">teaser trailer of the blue mascot's upcoming game</a> brought <em>the</em> question to the forefront again (now more than ever): Do you prefer Sonic with a belly or his slender modern interpretation?<br />

Sega has revealed a brand new <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> game via Sonic's Facebook page (Dr. Robotnik friend request -- <em>rejected</em>). A short <a href="http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150143624090667&amp;oid=23050342417&amp;comments">teaser trailer</a> depicts Sonic running through a sparsely colored sequence of checkered hills and loops, before meeting up with an old pal. Classic Sonic is back, pudge and all! Also, we hate to worry you, but it looks like he's been cloning himself. <br />
<br />
The game is expected to arrive on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sometime in 2011. We're sure to see more before the blue speed demon's 20th birthday.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/new-sonic-the-hedgehog-game-revealed-speeding-to-xbox-360-and-p/">New Sonic the Hedgehog game revealed, speeding to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 09:12:00 EST. Speaking of iPhone ports of classic console games being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/15/iphone-street-fighter-iv-on-sale-for-0-99-sales-go-to-earthqua/">discounted and the profits directed toward Japanese earthquake relief</a> ... Sega has knocked down the prices on its iOS <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> games, including (App Store links) <em><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonic-the-hedgehog-2/id347411942?mt=8">Sonic the Hedgehog</a></em> ($1.99), <em><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonic-the-hedgehog-2/id347411942?mt=8">Sonic 2</a></em> ($2.99), <em><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonic-the-hedgehog-4-episode-i/id392788790?mt=8">Sonic 4</a></em> ($3.99) and <em><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonic-spinball/id386379635?mt=8">Sonic Spinball</a></em> ($0.99), with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Red Cross through March 20. Additionally, proceeds from the $10 <em><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/football-manager-handheld/id398011049?mt=8">Football Manager Handheld 2011</a></em> will also be donated.<br />
<br />
Normally, we'd recommend against iPhone ports of console games, but when your money goes straight to helping save lives, we couldn't recommend them <em>enough</em>. You get a game that you may derive some enjoyment from, and the Red Cross gets a little more help.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/15/sonic-and-football-manager-ios-games-discounted-for-charity/">Sonic and Football Manager iOS games discounted for charity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 19:40:00 EST. Sega is releasing them all for free to PlayStation Plus members for a limited time, starting with the March 1 release of <em>Sonic the Hedgehog,</em> which is free to Plus members through April 5. <em>Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe 2, Comix Zone</em>, and <em>Altered Beast</em> will all follow on the day the previous game is removed.<br />
<br />
Those without Plus will have to wait for the opportunity to buy these Genesis games for $4.99 each: <em>Sonic</em> won't hit the normal PSN store until March 29, with the other games showing up around a month apart. You <em>could</em> wait for that, <em>or</em> you could get the <em>Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection</em> disc, which has all of these games and 42 more for ... <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Ultimate-Genesis-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B001G33V8S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1297874798&amp;sr=8-1">$16.79</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/16/playstation-plus-users-get-free-timed-exclusive-genesis-games-s/">PlayStation Plus users get free, timed-exclusive Genesis games starting in March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Feb 2011 11:57:00 EST. Are you just a few marks short of achieving your dream of being able to play <em>Gunstar Heroes</em> on every gaming platform known to mankind? You can go ahead and check "PC" off your list -- the game, alongside other classics like <em>Alien Soldier</em>, <em>Landstalker</em>, <em>Light Crusader</em>, <em>Shining Force</em>, <em>Shining Force II</em>, <em>Shining in the Darkness</em>, <em>Sonic 2</em>, <em>Sonic 3</em>, <em>Sonic and Knuckles</em>, <em>Streets of Rage</em>, <em>Streets of Rage 2</em>, <em>ToeJam and Earl</em>, <em>ToeJam and Earl in Panic on Funkotron</em>, and <em>Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair</em> have all arrived on Steam as part of the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/news/4925/">SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive Classics Collection 4</a>.<br />
<br />
You can grab each of these gems (well, some of them are gems, anyways) for $2.99 a pop. You could also grab <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sub/7096/">a bundle</a> featuring 10 of the games above for $7.50 -- though this collection is missing both <em>ToeJam and Earl</em> games, so like, what's the point?<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/more-sega-genesis-classics-added-to-steam/">More Sega Genesis classics added to Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 21:00:00 EST. Sega has plans for both series in this milestone year, according to a Japanese press release received by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/01/01/sega_sonic_puyo_anniversary/">Andriasang</a>.<br />
<br />
According to Andriasang, Sega teased multiple "projects" for both series' anniversaries, though the nature of those projects is unannounced. The last <em>Puyo Puyo</em> game was 2009's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/puyo-pop-7-drops-on-ds-wii-and-psp/"><em>Puyo Puyo 7</em></a> for PSP, Wii, and DS, so that series is ripe for another sequel. As for Sonic, it seems safe to assume we'll see a few <em>Sonic</em> games in 2011 -- not because it's a big anniversary, but because it's <em>a year</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/03/sega-teases-sonic-and-puyo-puyo-anniversary-projects/">Sega teases Sonic and Puyo Puyo anniversary projects</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. You can see where this is going -- Sega games are on sale today. Specifically, the sale covers a bunch of <em>Sonic</em> games ... a deal that was somehow hinted by this clue: "One Foe -- A world of good vs evil." Surprise!<br />
<br />
Microsoft is offering one-day discounts on <em>Sonic the Hedgehog </em><a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/Product/Sonic-The-Hedgehog/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410864?cid=search"><em>1</em></a><em>, </em><a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/Product/Sonic-The-Hedgehog-2/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410863?cid=search"><em>2</em></a>, and <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/Product/Sonic-The-Hedgehog-3/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802584109a3"><em>3</em></a><em>,</em> (now 200 MS Points each), <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/Product/Sonic-Knuckles/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802584109c4?cid=search"><em>Sonic &amp; Knuckles</em></a> (120 MSP), <em><a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/Product/Sonic-Adventure/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410a25?cid=search">Sonic Adventure</a></em> (400 MSP) and <em><a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/Product/SONIC-4-Episode-I/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410a07?cid=search">Sonic the Hedgehog 4</a></em> (800 MSP). The <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/Product/Sonic-Car-Prop/00001000-7167-1253-ca12-7beb53450815?cid=search">Sonic car</a> Avatar prop is on sale for 120 MSP.<br />
<br />
Also, <em><a href="http://social.zune.net/movies/The-Notebook/4e5ad813-0126-40e7-aadf-07954b5f24b3">The Notebook</a></em> is discounted today to 380 MSP. We don't think that's part of the theme, but if you're buying all those <em>Sonic</em> games, you should probably go ahead and buy <em>The Notebook</em> to try and spot any Sonic the Hedgehog references in it. Just to be sure.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/sonic-games-and-the-notebook-discounted-on-xbox-live/">Sonic games -- and The Notebook -- discounted on Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 14:00:00 EST. In a heartwarming, post-ghost Ebeneezer Scrooge-like manner, <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/12/20/mega-holiday-sale-2010-starts-tonight/">Sega has discounted</a> a wide array of its downloadable titles from the PSN, Xbox Live and iOS platforms. On top of the recent, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/sega-permanently-drops-prices-on-its-iphone-and-ipad-titles/">permanent price reductions</a> applied to some of those games, purchasing titles featuring impossibly acrobatic rodents and extremely rollable simians has never been so cost-effective.<br />
<br />
Check out the full list of discounted games -- which will remain discounted until January 3 -- after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/select-sega-downloadable-games-on-sale-until-january/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Select Sega downloadable games on sale until January</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/select-sega-downloadable-games-on-sale-until-january/">Select Sega downloadable games on sale until January</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 06:45:00 EST. If you've purchased an iDevice as a holiday gift for that <em>certain special someone</em>, Sega's made it <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/12/06/price-drop-on-all-sega-games-on-ipod-touch-iphone-and-ipad/">a bit more affordable</a> for you to load it up with some solid interactive apps. Nearly all of the publisher's games for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch have received permanent, sizable price cuts.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/sega-permanently-drops-prices-on-its-iphone-and-ipad-titles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega permanently drops prices on its iPhone and iPad titles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/sega-permanently-drops-prices-on-its-iphone-and-ipad-titles/">Sega permanently drops prices on its iPhone and iPad titles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 15:30:00 EST. We're talking, of course, about Pelikan13, who has released a demo for <em>Sonic Fan Remix</em>, an unofficial <em>Sonic</em> game for PC. <br />
<br />
The demo contains three stages inspired by <em>Sonic 2</em>'s Emerald Hill Zone, and seems to have struck a nerve among Sonic fans. At least, it's generated enough interest to overwhelm the <a href="http://sonicfanremix.com/">original site</a>. You can check out the demo for yourself at this <a href="http://sonicresearch.org/sonicfanremix/">mirror site</a>. Grab it quickly -- both to stay in keeping with Sonic's style and to make sure you have it in case it's taken down.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/give-sonic-fan-remix-a-spin/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Give Sonic Fan Remix a spin</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/give-sonic-fan-remix-a-spin/">Give Sonic Fan Remix a spin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 21:00:00 EST. There are stories emanating from the mysterious coalition known simply as "Europe" that Sega -- responsible for some of your dearest childhood memories and, maybe, your first heartbreak -- is busy "delisting" less-than-stellar Sonic the Hedgehog titles from European retailers. Jurgen Post, Sega SVP of EMEA (that's Europe, the Middle East and Africa), told <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/41217/Sub-standard-Sonics-de-listed">MCV</a>, "Any Sonic game with an average Metacritic has been de-listed," continuing, "We have to do this and increase the value of the brand. This will be very important when more big Sonic releases arrive in the future."<br />
<br />
While that certainly sounds ominous, we asked Alan Pritchard - newly instated veep of sales and marketing for Sega US and the man who held Mr. Post's spot until just a couple month's ago - to clarify what it means for Europe, for Sonic and (jingoism be damned!) for North America.<br />
<br />
"I think perhaps Jurgen's comments have somewhat been taken out of context," Pritchard told Joystiq. "It's not quite as drastic as what Disney do for example. They bring out <em>Lion King</em> and all of a sudden there's a cut-off date, and you can't buy <em>Lion King </em>for another six months. It's not quite as drastic as turning the tap off completely. We want consumers and retailers to defocus from the back catalog, the older titles and focus more on the new-release titles."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/sega-looking-to-improve-sonic-strategy-reducing-supply-of-old/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega 'looking to improve Sonic strategy,' reducing supply of older Sonic games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/sega-looking-to-improve-sonic-strategy-reducing-supply-of-old/">Sega 'looking to improve Sonic strategy,' reducing supply of older Sonic games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 17:40:00 EST. Sega has discounted four of its iOS games on the US iTunes Store. We contacted the publisher for the specific end date of the sale and all it could offer was that the discounted prices will be in effect for "a limited time" -- frugal shoppers don't have much time to <em>gorge on savings</em>, we assume. Here's what's available (all are $1.99, previously $5.99): <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonic-the-hedgehog/id316025912?mt=8&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D4"><em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em></a>, <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonic-the-hedgehog-2/id347411942?mt=8&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D4"><em>Sonic the Hedgehog 2</em></a>, <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/super-monkey-ball/id281966695?mt=8&amp;uo=4"><em>Super Monkey Ball</em></a> and <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/phantasy-star-ii/id382953129?mt=8&amp;uo=4"><em>Phantasy Star II</em></a>.<br />

We can all agree that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-unleashed">Sonic Unleashed</a> </em>had some pretty deep lows -- specifically, the Werehog. But the daytime segments in the game showed promise; <em>almost</em> a return to form. These areas of the game, for the unaware, combined <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-adventure"><em>Sonic Adventure</em></a>-like 3D free-running elements alongside more classical, 2D elements from the series' past. It was easily the highlight of that game. <br />
<br />
And Sega knows it, which explains why <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-colors"><em>Sonic Colors</em></a> is pretty much nothing but those portions of gameplay. That alone would make for a pretty serviceable <em>Sonic</em> game, but Sega has also added Wisps: small alien creatures who imbue Sonic with one-time-use powers.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-colors-e3-2010/">Sonic Colors (E3 2010)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-colors-e3-2010/#3079658"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/soniccolors10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-colors-e3-2010/#3079659"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/soniccolors09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-colors-e3-2010/#3079662"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/soniccolors08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-colors-e3-2010/#3079664"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/soniccolors07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-colors-e3-2010/#3079676"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/soniccolors05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/05/sonic-colors-preview-wisp-you-were-here/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sonic Colors preview: Wisp you were here</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/05/sonic-colors-preview-wisp-you-were-here/">Sonic Colors preview: Wisp you were here</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 05 Sep 2010 16:00:00 EST. Sega is temporarily dropping prices of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@mobile,sega">its iPhone games</a> in honor of kids going back to school. You know, it's been a long time since our GameBoy Advance was confiscated for illicit <em>Pok&eacute;mon Fire Red</em> playing, but we're pretty sure you're still not allowed to play games during class. Oh well -- it's <em>the thought</em> that counts, Sega!<br />
<br />
Additionally, <em>Phantasy Star 2</em> launched today on the App Store with a sale price of $2.99 (normally $4.99). See the complete Sega sale details after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/26/phantasy-star-2-released-for-iphone-other-sega-games-on-sale/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Phantasy Star 2 released for iPhone; other Sega games on sale</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/26/phantasy-star-2-released-for-iphone-other-sega-games-on-sale/">Phantasy Star 2 released for iPhone; other Sega games on sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 20:30:00 EST. Before you get your hopes too high, we feel morally compelled to inform you that the video posted after the jump, a purported gameplay clip from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxXycBv3Rlk"><em>Sonic and Knuckles 3D</em></a>, isn't culled from any upcoming licensed game. In fact, it's not even from a fan-made game -- rather, it's just a pre-rendered video from a skilled 3D artist and YouTube user by the username of BlobVanDam.<br />
<br />
Spin-dash past the jump if you want to see the Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2 that never-will-be. Actually, that's a pretty defeatist attitude to adopt. We're sure that someday, in the fullness of time, this <em>delightful</em> vision will be realized. You might find College Humor's latest <a href="http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1938370">video game parody clip</a>, posted just past the jump, a hilarious look at what <em>might have been</em> had classic games been laughably more accessible. The figure depicts Super Sonic in the "classic" Genesis-era art style, sparking across a platform in <em>Sonic 2</em>'s Chemical Plant Zone.<br />
<br />
If you want to buy one of these 15-inch-tall figures, you'll have to dig up some Chaos Emeralds or other precious materials of your own. Two versions will ship in the first quarter next year: <a href="https://www.first4figures.com/component/option,com_myphp/Itemid,3/product,78/">one for $140</a> and a <em>deluxe</em> version that lights up for twenty dollars more.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-sonic-figure/">Super Sonic figure</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-sonic-figure/#3111619"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/supersonic2010-06-23-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-sonic-figure/#3111620"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/supersonic2010-06-23-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-sonic-figure/#3111621"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/supersonic2010-06-23-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-sonic-figure/#3111622"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/supersonic2010-06-23-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-sonic-figure/#3111623"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/supersonic2010-06-23-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/23/a-super-expensive-super-sonic-figure/">A super expensive Super Sonic figure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 13:00:00 EST. Offers on each platform have a different start date and a different duration.<br />
<br />
The PSN sales will be active today through Tuesday, July 6, and include the PSP <em>Sonic Rivals</em> games ($10.99 or $13.99 for 1 or 2, respectively, or $17.99 for both) and discounted DLC for <em>Sonic &amp; Sega All-Stars Racing, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic the Hedgehog</em>.<br />
<br />
iPhone sales run tomorrow through June 30, and include discounts on the iPhone's Genesis games (<em>Streets of Rage</em> and <em>Golden Axe</em> are at the magic 99-cent price at which they start to seem like a good idea) along with <em>Super Monkey Ball</em> ($2.99) and the iPad's <em>Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Edition</em> ($4.99).<br />
<br />
Finally, the XBLA sale will begin -- and end -- Thursday, June 24. If you want to buy any of the Genesis <em>Sonic</em> games for $3 each, you'd best have your Microsoft Points ready that day.
