A recent ratings submission from the Australian Classification Board has revealed Dare to Fly, a previously unannounced console game that will apparently be published by Sony Computer Entertainment.

The classification points to console and mobile developer GameShastra as the game's creator. Though Dare to Fly does not appear on the company's website, GameShastra has released a handful of PlayStation 2 and PSP games in the past, and cites testimonials from Sony employees, indicating an existing relationship.

Interestingly, as PlayStation Lifestyle points out, Dare to Fly's unlockable trophy set has already been leaked, classifying the game as a downloadable title for the PlayStation 3. We've contacted GameShastra for clarification regarding Dare to Fly's upcoming release.
Sony-published Dare to Fly outed by Australian Classification Board originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 May 2013 01:00:00 EST. Former Sony Computer Entertainment chairman and CEO Ken Kutaragi has joined Marvelous AQL as an External Director, according to a Nikkei report. Kutaragi played a significant role in the PlayStation's formative years, and later headed up development of the PlayStation 2 and PS3. He retired from Sony in 2007, but remained as an advisor and SCEI's honorary chairman until 2011.

Marvelous AQL co-developed the recent PS Vita release Soul Sacrifice, and created 2012's 3DS farming sim Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning. Marvelous subsidiary Xseed recently purchased Atlus Online, rebranding itself as Marvelous USA earlier this month.
Ken Kutaragi now External Director at Marvelous AQL originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 May 2013 18:30:00 EST. In an interview with IGN, Inafune said he'd love to make the follow-up and "drive Vita sales even more."

"Soul Sacrifice is something I specifically designed for Vita using [the] hardware's specific features," Inafune told IGN. "To drive Vita sales even more, I have an idea for a Soul Sacrifice sequel. I'm actually approaching [Sony Computer Entertainment] regarding this project."

"Let's say the talks are ongoing and I'd love to make it happen," he added.

The likelihood of a sequel can only be boosted by SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida retweeting IGN's story earlier this morning.

According to IGN, Soul Sacrifice shifted 150,000 units at retail since being released in Japan on March 7 - that figure excludes digital sales. Of course, Japan is always a bit fond of a monster hunt, so it'll be interesting to see how the Vita game does in the west - and we should find out soon enough. Soul Sacrifice comes out next week in North America and Europe, on April 30 and May 3 respectively.
Soul Sacrifice sequel already pitched to Sony, says Inafune originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Apr 2013 15:30:00 EST. As developer Sony Santa Monica spilled on the PlayStation Blog, the brawler includes a mode called 'Trials of the Gods' in which you and a pal have to take down hordes of enemies as quickly as possible, since there's a time limit and all.

Each kill puts more seconds on the clock, while each wave of beasts grants you bonus time based on how quickly you clear it; there are five waves to fend off, with an "epic boss" as numero cinco. Trials of the Gods will be supported by four maps when Ascension launches next week, and Sony Santa Monica says there are more on the way. Also, any XP you earn in the mode goes towards upgrading champions across all multiplayer modes.

If that hasn't satiated your bloodthirst for bloody content, check out new videos for the multiplayer maps and Poseidon champion allegiance after the break.
Continue reading God of War: Ascension 'Trials of the Gods' co-op time trial mode revealed

God of War: Ascension 'Trials of the Gods' co-op time trial mode revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 06:00:00 EST. No information was give regarding a North American release window.

"It's not that development has been delayed," Inafune said during his presentation, but rather that Comcept wants to implement user feedback gained from this week's Tokyo Game Show, as well as an upcoming demo. Sony Computer Entertainment has been gracious with development scheduling, says Inafune.

It makes sense when you stop and think about it, considering that spring is the time for love, and what love comes without sacrifice? Well, that may not be the best comparison since our relationships usually don't involve trading body parts and loved ones for unimaginable power. Usually.
Soul Sacrifice sacrificing souls Spring 2013 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Sep 2012 09:30:00 EST. "I'm also excited about whatever I'm going to be doing next," Kaido said in response to a tweet from fellow Japanese game designer Masahiro Sakurai (of Smash. Bros. fame). It's unclear whether Kaido worked on Team Ico's latest project, The Last Guardian, or what work he's done since shipping Shadow of the Colossus in in 2005.
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus producer Kenji Kaido leaves Sony originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 13:45:00 EST. Sony Computer Entertainment, the company's gaming branch, has no fingerprints on the registrations, suggesting this to be a full-tilt movie endeavor rather than a marketing plan for the next PlayStation, as Fusible ponders.

The full list of registered domains can be found below, but just to ease the shock, we'll tell you they all include the words "console war," some have "movie" and others still have the audacity to use a hyphen. "The latest figures we've released for Vita (as of June 30th) are 2.2. million sales worldwide," an SCEE rep told us. We reached out following a report from PlayFront.de, where German PlayStation head Uwe Bassendowski mentioned the number in the context of the Vita's marketing.

The last update we had on Vita sales was back in May, when Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said the system sold 1.8 million units worldwide - meaning the console moved around 200K units each month in May and June. For some context, before the Nintendo 3DS received its price cut to $170 - and just days after its US launch - the then $250 handheld had sold 1.41 million units more than the Vita's current lifetime sales. As of September 2011 (one month after the price drop), the 3DS was at 6.68 million units sold worldwide - or more than triple where the Vita's selling at right now. "Yikes" is the word we'd use to describe that situation.

A strong showing of Vita games at Gamescom 2012 and the subsequent launch of said games will hopefully bolster the Vita's sales numbers. We sure aren't gonna see a price cut anytime soon.
PlayStation Vita sales topped 2.2 million worldwide as of June 30 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Aug 2012 11:35:00 EST. Japan, however, isn't so lucky. At least not yet. " PS Vita-PS3 Cross Buy price promo is coming to both Europe and North America. My quote by Famitsu was meant as 'not decided for Japan yet,'" Yoshida said. A piece from Famitsu was picked up yesterday (via Andriasang) that was misunderstood to mean the promo is exclusive to Europe.

PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale was revealed during Gamescom 2012 to be the first retail game from Sony launching with the Cross Buy promo - if you buy either version of the game, you get the other version for free. Sound Shapes and Motorstorm RC already employ the promo, albeit on PSN. A variety of other upcoming first-party Sony games also support the promotion. Incidentally, we also support the promotion, because it's super boss.
Sony's 'Cross Buy' promo headed to North America and Europe, Japan undecided originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Aug 2012 08:30:00 EST. The two came together in the last year, following a falling out between Dontnod and Sony in February 2011. Remember Me (formerly Adrift) was originally headed exclusively to Sony's consoles, it seems, given a publishing arrangement that the two companies worked out in February 2010.

"The Sony deal was signed February 2010 and ended a year later. We were totally independent, and had no publisher, but we were looking for one," Dontnod creative lead Jean-Maxime Moris told Joystiq in an interview this morning. So, what went wrong?

"I won't go into too many details, but basically they cancelled a bunch of projects, and we were just one of them," Moris said. "It felt bad at the time. And now, in retrospect, it's just one step toward where we are now."

Moris added that he's "very happy" to be working with Capcom today, and that Remember Me is a good fit for "the Capcom DNA." As seen in the video above, both maps take place on the planet Cypress, which is where the game's plot-vital "Rift Energy" was originally discovered long, long ago.

The two new maps maps, "Cypress: Collider" and "Cypress: Origin," both feature more locations for troops to use as cover, as well as pre-built structures with interiors -- two features fans have asking for, according to a post by LightBox Interactive president Dylan Jobe on the PlayStation Blog.

The 1.02 update also includes a multitude of other tweaks, fixes and adjustments, such as the addition of "Prestige" levels (Alpha through Omega, specifically) for players able to rank beyond Level 50. Other changes/additions include a new Homeworld called "Waypoint," as well a revamped voice chat system and the ability to eject from in-flight jet packs. At some time last night, the seven millionth user level was uploaded to the servers, spurring the creation of the busy infographic above. See it in its full glory here.

The celebratory image provides interesting context for the milestone, like how 200 new levels debut every hour. Did you know it would take Sackboy 21 years to run through every community level? Indeed, it's been a pretty eventful four years since the first LittleBigPlanet launched, and with the impending arrival of LittleBigPlanet Vita and LittleBigPlanet Karting on the PS3, Sony's newest (and most adorable) mascot shows no signs of slowing down.
LittleBigPlanet celebrates 7 million user levels with massive, manic infochart originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Aug 2012 00:45:00 EST. If you bought it in real life, it'd cost like a trillion dollars, so this is probably the best way to get access.

When the "Academy Edition" of Gran Turismo 5 launches this September 26, it'll cost €29.99/£19.99. The game doesn't have a price or launch date in the US just yet, but we expect to hear more on that front in the coming days.
Gran Turismo 5 'Academy Edition' racing to stores on September 26 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 10:15:00 EST. Talks with Limbo developer Playdead Studios broke down as Sony wanted to retain intellectual property rights.

"There are obvious benefits to keeping it, but also to giving it up: you're way more likely to get the deal," Smith said of retaining IP rights during the talk. "A publisher is much more likely to commit to marketing and merchandising if they own the IP." After Sony failed to reach a deal with Playdead Studios, the Danish developer went on to launch Limbo on Xbox Live Arcade in July 2010, one year before it landed on PSN.

Smith added, "Sometimes all we want is protection so [developers] don't make a game, finish it then go to one of our rivals. We look at IP on a case by case basis. With a bit of common sense, you can find common ground."
Sony missed Limbo exclusivity by asking for IP rights originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 13:40:00 EST. Most of the information is confidential by request, but a diagram showing the location of the FCC ID (above) suggests a hardware configuration that is shaped differently from the existing PS3 Slim - in fact, it's closer in shape to the original PS3.

From the diagram alone, it's impossible to tell how this potential model differs in size. Perhaps it's tiny like a PSOne. Or perhaps it's just a slight cosmetic modification that will result in a functionally identical system. Develop reported rumors that this new model will be officially revealed at Gamescom; we're checking in with Sony, but it's likely we won't hear anything official until the convention.
New PlayStation 3 model may be in the works, FCC filing suggests originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Jul 2012 11:21:00 EST. "It's recognition on Sony's part that the cloud and cloud streaming technologies are going to have profound and possibly a very positive impact on not only our game business, but also in the way our consumers interact with and obtain content in general."

Of course, the world still has no idea what this partnership actually means in practical terms, but its nice to know that we may soon have a Blu-Ray player capable of playing modern video games. Oh wait.
Sony's House: Gaikai expansion to other Sony platforms 'absolutely' possible originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jul 2012 18:00:00 EST. The announcement shies away from saying anything too specific, but notes that "SCE will establish a new cloud service" based on today's acquisition. The implication of course is that Gaikai will offer cloud-streaming gaming via the PlayStation 3 and Vita, not to mention any unannounced future systems and other Sony properties (Bravia televisions, for instance).

"SCE Will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices," SCE prez and CEO Andrew House said of the news, hinting at where we'll see Gaikai's tech implemented.

It's unclear whether the streaming tech is intended for Sony's PlayStation 3 or for future consoles unknown (or both). It's also unclear if Gaikai CEO David Perry will remain with his company in any capacity, or if he'll move to Sony, or if he's out altogether. And how does this affect Gaikai's existing partnerships with various television manufacturers (especially considering Sony's also in the television market)? We're not sure just yet.

Gaikai was recently rumored to be seeking a buyer, to the lofty tune of $500 million. Today's news sees them coming up $120 million short of that number.
Continue reading Sony buying streaming game service Gaikai for $380 million, to establish 'new cloud service'

Sony buying streaming game service Gaikai for $380 million, to establish 'new cloud service' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Jul 2012 07:11:00 EST. Beyond being the president and CEO of Sony Corporation (the umbrella parent company of PlayStation, Bravia, and many other Sony brands), Hirai is also "representative director" and "chairman" - until today, that is. Hirai is relinquishing his responsibilities and titles for both his positions as representative director and chairman of Sony Corp.

Hirai is dropping both titles and responsibility in today's move, only remaining on Sony's board in a "part-time capacity." He became president and CEO earlier this year, taking over former CEO Howard Stringer's spot in early February. Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House is taking over the vacated chairman position, effective this month, and former Sony Corp. head Howard Stringer is also exiting his board seat.

In case the bizarre-looking hierarchy isn't clear enough, this means that Andrew House - the guy who runs the PlayStation brand - is the head of Sony Corp.'s board, followed by eight Japan-based Sony Corp. employees. One of those is his boss, Kaz Hirai. Yup.
Kaz Hirai drops some titles at Sony, still president originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 09:50:00 EST. But what of Sony? The Japanese publishing giant owns the intellectual property rights to the Resistance series - as evidenced by the recent release of Resistance: Burning Skies on Vita, developed by Nihilistic - but is it planning on any more series entries? "We have no definitive plans," Sony Computer Entertainment Europe producer Daniel Brooke said in a recent interview.

That isn't to say the series is done, of course. Brooke's full answer was, "The Resistance franchise has been exciting to work on, but as for the future we have no definitive plans," which sounds an awful lot more couched to us than straight up saying the series is done with. Considering Sony's five games deep on the franchise and the latest entry was billed as a sell-point for the Vita, we're not counting out Resistance just yet. After all, those Chimera are awfully dexterous.
Sony: 'No definitive plans' for Resistance series, no games currently in the works originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 20:00:00 EST. A press release this week confirmed the EU release, and Sony VP of product development and worldwide studios Scott Rohde told us in an interview this week that the "wacky" internally developed PSN game will indeed arrive in North America as well.

"It'll ship here, it'll ship everywhere," Rohde said. To him, Tokyo Jungle's worldwide release is emblematic of Sony's "crazy innovative" approach. "That game is just wacky, but in a good way, because we like to show that there's still an art form, and you can still experiment," he said. "Is everyone gonna love a game like Tokyo Jungle? Absolutely not, but there's a whole bunch of people it's gonna make really happy. Specifically for the fact that it's so different, and so unexpected. That's a key part of the culture of Worldwide Studios and how our games are developed."

Though he couldn't name one specific person internally who championed the previously Japan-only game, Rohde extolled the internal culture that allows games like that to be created. "Someone has a key vision in our [Japan Studios] about Tokyo Jungle, they wanted to build this game. And so we're gonna embrace that. And of course we discuss it, and if it doesn't make sense, we can walk away. We walk away from dozens and dozens of titles every year. But the difference is, we actually build them out to a certain extent. And when they hit a point where we think, 'You know what? This is pretty interesting and it's gonna make some people happy,' we're gonna build it."

Frankly, we're pretty darn happy this one made it through the wringer. Tokyo Jungle doesn't have a release date or price just yet.

Gallery: Tokyo Jungle (E3 2012)

Sony's 'wacky' Tokyo Jungle headed to North America and Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Jun 2012 13:30:00 EST. Nintendo's Wii U, however, got its big debut this week, and the console is planned for a holiday 2012 launch. As we learned in the last hardware generation and the generation before that, being the first out of the gate in terms of launching hardware can mean the difference between first and third place. SCEA Senior VP of Product Development and worldwide studios Scott Rohde, however, isn't worried about the potential for Wii U to lead the next hardware generation due to its launch lead.

"Not at all. That's the simple answer," he told Joystiq in an interview this week. "In very similar fashion to the way I'm talking about game development," he said, referencing Sony's hands-off approach to internal game development. "We have a very strong vision in what we believe we're gonna do for the next generation. And we're not talking about it at all yet," he added with a smile.

"The reality is let's build a great machine. And we'll talk about it then." With Unreal Engine 4 getting a big debut recently, and it being held up as the harbinger of the next hardware generation, we expect we'll be hearing from both Sony about that potentially "great machine" not too long from now.
Wii U lead isn't important, contends Sony's Rohde originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 19:30:00 EST. I'm sitting here looking at the list, and so many pantheon level games jump out at me. Final Fantasy IX, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3, Valkyrie Profile and Super Robot Taisen Alpha (the first of the franchise's "modern" entries) all came out that year. There's also Legend of Dragoon, Sony's erstwhile attempt to piggyback on the success of SquareSoft. And as it happens, it hit the PSN this week.

The impending arrival of The Legend of Dragoon has brought with it a wave of nostalgia from some very vocal fans; and boy, they will not brook any criticism of their favorite game. Just look at what happened when 1UP asked why they should care about Legend of Dragoon: blanket proclamations that it's the PS1's most underrated RPG, and by the way, a true classic.

Was it though? Have we all somehow overlooked a true gem of a JRPG? I don't think so. I would take every one of the RPGs I listed in the introduction over Legend of Dragoon. I do, however, think that Legend of Dragoon has its place in RPG history.
Continue reading Understanding The Legend of Dragoon

Understanding The Legend of Dragoon originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. He also says that some form of "community experience" will be included, though he stops short of saying whether LBP.me will play some part in that experience.

When we first heard about LBP Karting, the game was said to feature PlayStation Move functionality as well, a la Mario Kart for Wii. However, neither Sony nor United Front Games mentions as much in this announcement. What we do know for sure is this: LittleBigPlanet Karting will launch at some point in 2012 on the PlayStation 3.

Gallery: LittleBigPlanet Karting

LittleBigPlanet Karting arriving in 2012 from ModNation Racers devs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 09:30:00 EST. In Japan, however, the game has been out since early February, freeing up art director Yoshiaki Yamaguchi to present his work on the already completed game to a room of GDC 2012 attendees this morning.

Yamaguchi spoke of how cel shading and creating a living world helped to service the project's open world gameplay. "The color of the sky provides information about location or acts as sort of like a symbol for that place. However, just simply applying a layer of color would be too direct or too strong, and may even feel out of place," he said. "So we crafted this atmospheric sort of simulation to give it a more natural feel and appeal."

The result, as shown off during the presentation, is a vibrant, painterly world that can be fully interacted with by the player. Yamaguchi said the team at Sony's Japan Studio pushed for an open world from the beginning of the project, as seen in the first concept video above (revealed for the first time during his GDC panel).

The game's main character saw more of an evolution than the game world, in fact. Seen after the break, Kat saw several iterations before the team settled on a definitive look that would represent a "strong female" as well as a "strong ninja."
Continue reading Art in service of gameplay: Gravity Rush

Art in service of gameplay: Gravity Rush originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Mar 2012 16:35:00 EST. Building something into your product that's fun to show off and talk about makes the purchase feel justified to the buyer, and instills a sense of "Dude, I want this" in the buyer's friends. You've got to give them something to talk about, though, which is why Sony is making the Vita's Cross Play functionality easier to jump into via free DLC for two of its titles.

Well, free with purchase, we should say. Anyone who buys Hustle Kings for the Vita will be able to download the PS3 version of the game for free, and vice versa. Wipeout 2048 pilots that already own Wipeout HD and its "HD Fury" pack will receive the Vita DLC versions of both at no charge when they're released this spring. Sony describes this as "promotional" pricing, so we doubt free cross-platform transference will always be the norm. For now though, it's a good step towards establishing Cross Play as more than a gimmick in the minds of Vita owners and their friends.
Sony incentivizes Vita Cross Play with free PS3 DLC, and vice versa originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 13:00:00 EST.
