Namco Bandai has resolved one of these issues with update 1.1, which adds Bluetooth multiplayer support for "VS Battle" mode.<br /><br /><em>Soul Calibur</em> is <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id481958471?mt=8">on sale</a> for the update, dropped the price of three whole standard apps to $12. Of all the major fighting game series on the market, <em>Soul Calibur</em> is the game that you would probably feel most comfortable playing with your non-gaming friends or significant other. And a lot of that has to do with the weapons.<br /><br />The <em>Soul</em> series wasn't the first fighting game to feature weapons, of course. In the early days of the genre, <em>Samurai Shodown</em> distinguished itself with its detailed sprites, gore, and katanas. <em>Battle Arena Toshinden</em>, meanwhile, distinguished itself as the first 3D weapons fighter, close to a year before the original <em>Soul Edge</em> hit the arcades.<br /><br /><em>Soul Edge</em>, for its part, was Namco's way of testing uncharted waters. It was positioned as an alternative to <em>Tekken</em> and <em>Virtua Fighter</em>, which dominated 3D fighting at that time, and its weapons were a big part of its appeal. Apart from feeling smoother than the stiff <em>Tekken</em>, the strategic concept of weapon range was more intuitive than the combo-heavy 3D fighters that had preceded it.<br /><br />The reason it's so easy to understand is that the concept is built into the visual vocabulary of the game. When you look at Siegfried, you see a large knight with a gigantic blade. It's instantly apparent that he has longer reach than, say, the lightweight ninja Taki. And a good player knows how to put that advantage to good use, or to minimize it in its turn.<br /><br />Today, <em>Soul Edge</em> is largely forgotten outside of a small cadre of dedicated fans, but it did its part to lay down the foundation for the series by introducing the story as well as familiar characters like Mitsurugi. <em>Soulcalibur V</em> director Daishi Odashima certainly seems to have some affection for the original game. He even <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2011/05/15/odashima-wanted-to-call-soulcalibur-v-soul-edge-2-but-namco-said-no/">argued</a> in favor of naming the upcoming sequel "<em>Soul Edge 2</em>," but was overruled.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/23/why-soul-calibur-still-quietly-burns-after-more-than-a-decade/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Why Soul Calibur Still (Quietly) Burns After More than a Decade</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/23/why-soul-calibur-still-quietly-burns-after-more-than-a-decade/">Why Soul Calibur Still (Quietly) Burns After More than a Decade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/soulcalibur"><em>Soulcalibur</em></a> has finally <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id481958471?mt=8">arrived on iOS</a>, meaning eager fans can keep the classic fighter on hand at all times. That is, if you're willing to part with enough cash to buy roughly a dozen other iOS titles. Yup, <em>Soulcalibur</em> will currently set you back $11.99 and it's <em>on sale</em>. The normal price will actually be $15.<br />
<br />
For comparison's sake, the Xbox Live Arcade version costs $10 and features better graphics, more modes (like, an actual versus mode) and physical controls. There are more modes planned for the iOS version but ... really, <em>fifteen dollars</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/psa-soulcalibur-now-on-ios-is-twelve-freaking-dollars/">PSA: Soulcalibur now on iOS, is twelve freaking dollars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 12:30:00 EST. We've known a new <em>Soul Calibur</em> game is coming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/26/soul-calibur-series-returns-to-the-stage-of-history/">since back in December</a> and now it would appear that Namco Bandai is finally ready to make a formal announcement. Well, not <em>now</em> now. Like, in two weeks.<br />
<br />
A site teasing a "new chapter" in <em>something</em> has recently emerged online, counting down to May 11 -- presumably when the identity of said chapter will be announced. Corroborating the mid-May reveal is <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/Daishi_CALIBUR/status/62391426650091520">a tweet</a> from <em>Soul Calibur's</em> "current game director" Daishi Odashima promising "to announce something" at that time. If we were rating the mystery behind this reveal, we'd probably give it an F. Minus.<br />
<br />

Daishi Odashima, <em>Soul Calibur IV</em> designer, opened a Twitter account on Christmas day, offering the following tease as his gift to fans of the weapons-based fighter series: "SC is BACK! Get ready, fans!" To prove he was <em>serious</em>, he included a picture of himself at his desk, with a drawing of the Soul Calibur sword.<br />
<br />
With a new <em>Soul Calibur </em>now in the works, that officially brings the number of franchise fighting games on the way from Namco Bandai to three, including<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/tekken-tag-tournament-2">Tekken Tag Tournament 2</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/24/street-fighter-x-tekken-and-vice-versa-revealed-at-comic-con/">Tekken vs. Street Fighter</a>.</em> Thanks for this fighting game renaissance, <em>Street Fighter IV</em>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/26/soul-calibur-series-returns-to-the-stage-of-history/">Soulcalibur series returns to the stage of history</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 26 Dec 2010 12:30:00 EST. In Korea, you still have to buy a bundle to get it, but the game included is ... <em>Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny</em>. The presence of a large portrait of Ivy on the top of the box suggests that the lilac PSP is intended to match Ivy's costume. Either that or Hannah Montana is confirmed as a playable character in <em>Soul Calibur</em>.<br /><br />It's interesting that Sony Computer Entertainment Korea doesn't seem to be operating under the notion that the Lilac system is just for "girlz." The <em>Soul Calibur</em> PSP Lilac Purple Pack will be out August 28 for 285,000 won ($231).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/sony-korea-you-are-so-voldo/">Sony Korea: 'You are so Voldo'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 13:30:00 EST. Namco Bandai is making a push to capitalize on the iPhone gaming "gold rush," as evidenced by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/03/jonathan-kromrey-to-head-up-namcos-new-apple-games-division/">the recent opening</a> of its new Apple Games division. In <a href="http://kotaku.com/5328749/namco-eyes-tekken-soulcalibur-as-it-expands-iphone-development">an interview with Kotaku</a>, Apple Games' recently ordained manager, Jonathan Kromrey, explained exactly how the company was going to win over the mobile gaming crowd -- by bringing arcade heavyweights "like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/pac-man-remix-coming-to-iphone-soon/"><em>Pac-Man</em></a>, <em>Galaga</em>, <em>Soulcalibur</em> and <em>Tekken</em>" to Apple's handheld device.<br /><br />Of course, those last two carry with them a substantial barrier: The iPhone and iPod Touch's limited control capabilities. Kromrey explained that Namco was "thinking about" how to make the brawlers work without a controller. We suggest some sort of voice control scheme, but only because we think it'll result in some hilariously awkward subway rides. "Punch! Punch! Kick! Punch! Block! Spinning Frankensteiner!"<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/namco-considering-tekken-soulcalibur-for-iphone/">Namco considering Tekken, Soulcalibur for iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 22:00:00 EST. A few years into the console's life, we're seeing a new generation of graphics on the system. Namco Bandai is really pushing the PSP envelope with <em>Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny</em>. The character models look convincing, many of them featuring the special "bounce" that gamers have come to expect. Destructible environments also return ... but in limited fashion. Namco Bandai must have an entire department dedicated to finding new ways and characters to market with its <em>Soulcalibur </em>brand. Following last year's ballet with the Force, the company has announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/god-of-war"><em>God of War</em>'s</a> Kratos will be taking out his frustration on the cast of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soulcalibur-broken-destiny/">Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny</a></em> for the PSP. <br /><br />What with all of his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/god-of-war-iii-out-on-playstation-3-in-march-2010/">disemboweling</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/kratos-wields-clubs-of-chaos-in-hot-shots-golf-tomorrow/">afternoons on the links</a>, we honestly don't know how everyone's favorite Spartan with a chip on his shoulder fits bickering with <em>Soulcalibur</em> brawlers into his busy schedule. Nevertheless, the Ghost of Sparta will appear as a guest character in the miniaturized fighter. We just hope he's on his best behavior while in someone else's house when <em>Broken Destiny</em> ships later this summer. <br /><br />See the trailer after the break.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kratos-in-soulcalibur-broken-destiny-psp/">Kratos in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny (PSP)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kratos-in-soulcalibur-broken-destiny-psp/#2055073"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/scbd_pub_ss_kratos_sophitia_090417_002_prt-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kratos-in-soulcalibur-broken-destiny-psp/#2055072"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/scbd_pub_ss_kratos_nightmare_090415_011_prt_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kratos-in-soulcalibur-broken-destiny-psp/#2055071"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/scbd_pub_ss_kratos_nightmare_090415_004_prt_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kratos-in-soulcalibur-broken-destiny-psp/#2055070"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/scbd_pub_ss_kratos_algol_090417_002_prt-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kratos-in-soulcalibur-broken-destiny-psp/#2055069"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/scbd_pub_ss_kratos_090415_002_prt_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/03/kratos-seeking-vengeance-in-soulcalibur-broken-destiny/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kratos seeking vengeance in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/03/kratos-seeking-vengeance-in-soulcalibur-broken-destiny/">Kratos seeking vengeance in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Jun 2009 09:00:00 EST. Expect the upcoming PSP-exclusive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soul-calibur-broken-destiny"><em>Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny</em></a> to have less polygons than its console counterpart, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soul-calibur-iv"><em>Soulcalibur IV</em></a>; however, this doesn't mean a drop in the quality "visuals" the series has become known for. Namco recently showed off a comparison of the two <em>Soulcaliburs</em>, using Ivy and her voluptuous form to show off the seemingly lossless quality.<br /><br />It appears that <em>Broken Destiny</em> will use not more than half the polygon count of <em>Soulcalibur IV</em>. The graphical disparities appear to affect clothing textures and shadow/lightning effects most of all. Still, with the PSP's relatively small screen it won't be too noticeable. That, and you'd be looking elsewhere, we think.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/namco-scales-down-ivys-polygons-not-her-size-for-broken-dest/">Namco scales down Ivy's polygons, not her 'size' for Broken Destiny</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Jun 2009 17:00:00 EST. As you can see in these new screenshots, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/05/soulcalibur-broken-destiny-trailer-transcends-psp-graphical-abi/"><em>Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny</em></a> isn't giving up the graphical detail found in the console games. No, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/soul-calibur-ivs-bountiful-bouncing-breasts-bulge-bigger/">Ivy is well-endowed</a> with ... polygons. Wait, Namco Bandai wasn't done announcing PSP games. Just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/tekken-6-also-pummeling-psp/">an hour</a> after their <em>Tekken 6</em> announcement, the company also revealed a brand new <em>Soulcalibur</em> game for the handheld. <em>Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny</em> is a PSP-exclusive version of <em>Soulcalibur IV</em>. Gone are the <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/vader-to-invade-soulcalibur-iv-for-a-price/">Star Wars bonus characters</a>, but in their stead will be at least one new character: Dampiere.<br /><br /><em>Broken Destiny</em> will feature all the dressings of a console fighter, with arcade, versus and survival modes. New to the PSP version will be a new single-player mode meant for beginners struggling to learn the intricacies of the battle system. It will function, essentially, as an enhanced tutorial mode.<br /><br />The PSP version will also feature new lighting effects that allow players to fight in stages at different times of day. Other gameplay components, such as the critical finish and armor destruction are also supposedly improved. Finally, <em>Broken Destiny</em> will offer Ad-Hoc wireless play, although according to <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/psp/action/soulcaliburbrokendestiny/news.html?page=1&amp;sid=6208732">Gamespot</a>, Infrastructure <em>might</em> be a possibility. Expect <em>Soulcalibur</em> to hit your no-longer-defunct PSP this summer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/one-more-thing-soulcalibur-destiny-heading-to-psp/">One more thing: Soulcalibur Broken Destiny heading to PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 20:05:00 EST. Companies like to keep secrets, hiding their upcoming projects from the general public until the marketing and PR stars align. However, leaks can come from a variety of sources: ESRB database listings, early achievement reveals, and trademark registrations. <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=15068436&amp;postcount=143">NeoGAF</a>'s Stormbringer has compiled a list of new Japanese trademarks and one entry in particular caught our attention: Namco Bandai's <em>EXCALIBUR</em>.<br /><br />While the trademark in question could be a reference to the classic story of King Arthur, we can't help but remember another popular Namco Bandai franchise: <em>Soulcalibur</em> (yes, it's one word). Could Namco Bandai be looking into creating a spin-off series of the popular fighting game? An even more dramatic possibility: the franchise will be donning an entirely new name. Let's not forget, the first game in the franchise was called <em>Soul Edge</em>, not <em>Soulcalibur</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/the-soul-still-burns-namco-bandai-registers-excalibur-trademark/">The soul still burns? The currently Japan-only PSP RPG, <em>Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2</em>, is growing far beyond just the <em>Tales</em> universe. The all-star lineup of Namco Bandai stars expands in new downloadable content, which allows players to get costumes from <em>Soulcalibur</em> and <em>Legend of Valkyrie</em>. According to <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/02/17/soulcalibur-mythology-part-of-tales-of-the-world-radiant-mythology-2/">Siliconera</a>, most of these costumes have been free.<br /><br />We're pretty certain that Namco Bandai will bring this game over to the US, DLC intact. It seems as though PSP owners will need to get ready for a new era of DLC and microtransactions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/18/tales-of-the-world-gets-soulcalibur-themed-dlc/">Tales of the World gets Soulcalibur-themed DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Feb 2009 11:30:00 EST. SHOCK! Namco Bandai has just announced that Xbox 360's exclusive <em>Soulcalibur IV</em> character, Yoda, will be available as DLC on the PS3. We totally didn't <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/yoda-as-dlc-for-soulcalibur-iv-says-korean-playstation-site/">see this coming</a>.<br /><br />The DLC pack will be available next Thursday, October 23rd, and will cost $4.99. Xbox 360 owners will be able to access the PS3-exclusive character, Darth Vader, for 400 Microsoft Points.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/17/yoda-appearing-as-soulcalibur-iv-dlc-will-cost-5/">Yoda appearing as Soulcalibur IV DLC, will cost $5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Oct 2008 11:45:00 EST. Namco Bandai's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/soul-calibur-ivs-secret-characters-darth-vader-and-yoda/">ridiculously cross-branded</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soul-calibur-iv"><em>Soul Calibur IV</em></a> has cut a deep swath into retail shelves worldwide, shipping not one million units <em>but two </em>since its July 29 debut. <br /><br />Still, and not to make an example out of you, Namco, but really all of this chest puffery over units shipped is a bit overblown. It's like bragging about how many pencils you threw at the ceiling, rather than what's <em>really important</em>, namely how many stuck. Then again, we imagine it's difficult to look up and count while you're ducking under the desk from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/06/namco-bandai-profits-take-a-dip-in-q109/">falling profits</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/07/soul-calibur-iv-burns-two-million-souls-worldwide/">Soul Calibur IV burns two million souls worldwide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Aug 2008 15:00:00 EST. The character creation tools of <em>Soulcalibur IV</em> look to be rather robust. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5030235/metal-gear-solid-in-my-soulcalibur-iv">Kotaku</a>'s CB has created facsimiles of our favorite <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> characters, Snake and Raiden, using the in-game system. While not 100% spot-on, these renders do add a distinct <em>Metal Gear</em> flair to the classic fighter. Seeing these two fighting on the Death Star with <em>Soulcalibur</em> weapons ... well, that's the kind of stuff fanfics are made of.<br /><br />[Thanks, Gambit07!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/29/snake-versus-raiden-the-sciv-user-generated-match/">Snake versus Raiden: the SCIV user generated match</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jul 2008 09:30:00 EST. Over the weekend, a video of Darth Vader and Yoda fighting each other in <em>Soulcalibur IV</em> was leaked onto the internet (and then it was subsequently pulled). Currently, Darth Vader lives only on the PS3 version, while Yoda lives only on the Xbox 360 version. Could Namco Bandai be planning DLC which unlocks the famed Star Wars characters in both versions? It would make a lot of sense, wouldn't it?<br /><br />According to the <a href="http://www.playstation.co.kr/ps3/ps3_games_view.sce?sid=1281">Korean PlayStation site</a>, Yoda will be available for download from the PSN. That sounds like DLC to us. While Namco Bandai hasn't confirmed anything yet, we wouldn't be surprised if Yoda (and who knows what other characters) ended up appearing in <em>Soulcalibur IV</em>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/07/28/sony-computer-entertainment-korea-leaks-yoda-as-soulcalibur-iv-ps3-dlc/">Siliconera</a>; Image via <a href="http://www.gamersreports.com/news/8653/vader-coming-to-360-soul-calibur-iv-as-download-screens/">GamersReports</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/yoda-as-dlc-for-soulcalibur-iv-says-korean-playstation-site/">Yoda as DLC for Soulcalibur IV, says Korean PlayStation site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 17:30:00 EST. This is it folks, this week officially marks the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soul-calibur-iv"><em>Soul Calibur IV</em></a>. You may recall <em>SCIV</em> as the weapons based fighter that features not only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/17/more-d-cups-runneth-over-new-sc-iv-shots/">ridiculously proportioned female fighters</a> but also <em>Yoda</em>. The Playstation 3 version gets Darth Vader himself, though he may be Force choking his way to the 360 if <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/26/rumor-vador-dlc-to-darken-soulcalibur-iv/">rumors</a> are to be believed. Also on the release this week are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/02/spectral-force-3-site-launches-first-screens/"><em>Spectral Force 3</em></a> and <em>Summer Athletics The Ultimate Challenge</em>. <em>Spectral Force 3</em> is a Japanese strategy RPG and <em>Summer Athletics The Ultmate Challenge </em>is ... well, honestly, we have no idea. Looking at the title, we'd say someone is looking to cash in on the Olympic Games.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/new-games-this-week-soul-calibur-iv-edition/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/shipping-this-week-now-with-more-yoda-edition/">Shipping this week: Now with more Yoda edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 15:45:00 EST. Fighting fans hoping for a pre-launch lightsaber throw down will wait until <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soul-calibur-IV">Soul Calibur IV</a> </em>cuts into retail shelves later this month, as Namco Bandai informs us that a demo for the game won't be available until after the game is released.<br /><br />According to reps manning the company's E3 room, the devs are currently putting all of their effort towards getting the game ready for its release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on July 29. As for what and when exactly we can expect from the demo when it's finally released, Namco Bandai wouldn't say, teasing only that it'll be available sometime "down the road."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/sould-calibur-iv-demo-coming-down-the-road/">Soul Calibur IV demo coming 'down the road'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 16:45:00 EST. The anime invasion of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soul-calibur-iv/"><em>Soulcalibur IV</em></a> is relentless. It never ceases to end; with now having the fifth character revealed, how many more does Namco plan on adding? The latest anime-inspired, original combatant to join the roster is Kamikirimusi. She's some sort of half-demon and is a creation from Hirokazu Hisayuki whose previous works have included <em>The Visions of Escaflowne</em> and <em>Tekken: The Movie</em>.<br /><br />As we've mentioned in previous posts, all the new anime cameo characters are female. None are male. Perhaps, that's a good thing as it balances out the very male-centric <em>Star Wars</em> cameo cast (Vader and his apprentice for the PS3 version). With <em>Soulcalibur IV's</em> release only three weeks away, it's a wonder what other stuff Namco will hit us with next.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/one-more-anime-inspired-soul-for-soulcalibur-iv/">One more anime-inspired soul for Soulcalibur IV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Jul 2008 21:30:00 EST. Truly one of the best 3D fighting games ever made, it still shines on XBLA. There's only one problem: it doesn't support online play. Watch this week's episdoe and find out whether or not it's still worth the scratch.<br />

Looking for an upgraded fighting game with no widescreen support, online or modes to unlock? No? Well, if you change your mind <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Soulcalibur/">Soulcalibur</a></em> is now available on the Xbox Live Arcade. The classic fighter dropped as the lone release for the Arcade (as far as an actual game goes) and will hit your digital wallet up for 800 MS space-creds. Preparing gamers for the forthcoming <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Soul-Calibur-IV/">Soul Calibur IV</a></em>, the HD upgraded classic is a mixed bag. Probably one of the best fighters of its time, the XBLA exclusive feels so stripped down it would be more at home propped up on cinder blocks. Which sucks because it's still a rad game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/soulcalibur-stabs-xbla-through-the-heart/">Soulcalibur stabs XBLA through the heart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 09:30:00 EST. OK, so not so much a surprise on the XBLA front this week, since we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/schizoid-soulcalibur-pages-appear-on-xbox-com/">brought you the rumor</a> last week that <em>Soulcalibur</em> would likely be released soon on the service. (It'll be there this Wednesday for 800 points [$10]). But hey, <em>Schizoid</em> wasn't released like we thought it would be, so that's <em>kind of</em> a surprise, right? Not like, a great one, but a surprise all the same.<br />
<br />
In other surprises that won't necessarily have you vibrating with glee, <em>Wits and Wagers</em> will be getting 280 new questions this week for 320 MS points ($4). In case, you know, you played it <em>so many times</em> that you ran out of questions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/this-wednesday-soulcalibur-still-burns-on-xbla/">This Wednesday: Soulcalibur still burns on XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Jun 2008 14:00:00 EST. <br />
Just today, Microsoft <a href="http://gamerscoreblog.com/press/archive/2008/06/30/soulclbrxbla.aspx">announced</a> that on the morning of Wednesday, July 2nd, old-school <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/soulcalibur-to-hit-xbla-next-week-see-it-in-action-now/"><em>Soulcalibur</em></a> will be releasing to the XBLA at the 800 Microsoft price point. Included in this XBLA version of <em>Soulcalibur </em>will be all nineteen fighters, leaderboards, versus play and over eight game modes to experience in gorgeous high definition. Enough to make any fanboy shed a tear of happiness. Not only will we be treated to <em>Soulcalibur </em>this week, but XBLA game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wits-and-wagers"><em>Wits and Wagers</em></a> will be receiving a 320 MS point expansion that adds an additional 280 questions to the mix. Make the jump for the official press release.<br />

When <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soulcaliburiv"><em>Soul Calibur</em>'s</a> cadre of fighters cut their way onto the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/soul-calibur-iv-coming-july-29-in-regular-and-premium-editions/">this July</a> in North America, they will do so in pairs. The latest issue of <em>Famitsu </em>reveals that the game will feature tag team elements in order to "perform combos" based on an on-screen meter that depletes as characters continue to test the bonds of friendship.<br /><br />However, according to <a href="http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169641">crack CAG translators</a>, it remains unknown to what extent "character swapping" will be featured in <em>Soul Calibur IV</em>. The article interestingly only mentions the mechanic in reference to the game's single player mode, and that "teammates may suddenly join and leave at the end of the battle." We can't imagine that Namco Bandai would be so shortsighted as to leave something like this out of the game's versus mode. Still, we imagine that just the idea of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/soul-calibur-ivs-secret-characters-darth-vader-and-yoda/">Darth Vader conquering the galaxy</a> shoulder to shoulder with top-heavy Taki (or Ivy, or Cassandra, or...) is enough to get fan fiction writers reaching for the keyboard and a change of pants.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/soul-calibur-iv-getting-tag-teams-of-some-kind/">Soul Calibur IV getting tag teams of some kind</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 13:00:00 EST. It looks like our crazy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/xbox-com-pages-appear-soulcalibur-and-schizoid/">Xbox.com page theory</a> might be right after all. According to the Japanese product page for the Xbox Live Arcade release of the original <em><a href="http://www.xbox.com/ja-JP/games/s/soulcaliburxboxlivearcade/default.htm?WText.campSrc=RSS&amp;WText.camp=%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0">Soulcalibur</a></em>, Namco Bandai has scheduled the classic fighter for release next week. Of course this date could change like so many delayed XBLA titles before it have but international page leaks usually <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/27/ikaruga-release-date-leaked/">pan out for release dates</a>.<br />
<br />
Clocking in at 800MS Points, <em>Soulcalibur</em> (XBLA) includes the standard HD upgrade and LIVE leaderboard support other retro revivals see but Namco Bandai has confirmed the title will not include online multiplayer support. While we still have fond memories of the 1999 Dreamcast release, we scratch our heads at the decision to opt out of the online versus upgrade. With <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Soul-Calibur-IV/">Soul Calibur IV</a></em> on the horizon we wonder, what's the point? Hopefully <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Namco-Bandai/">Namco Bandai</a> will revisit the release and upgrade it with online support much like they did <em>Tekken: Dark Resurrection</em> for the PSN. But, we're not holding our breath.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/soulcalibur-to-hit-xbla-next-week-see-it-in-action-now/">Rumor: Soulcalibur to hit XBLA next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 12:15:00 EST. A meter on the lower part of the screen will allow you perform combos using this mechanic. Strangely, there is no mention of this feature in vs. mode.<br />
<p> </p>
<p>A ton of other features are revealed, some of the more note-worthy ones are those of the Create a Soul mode, which will allow you have "50 character slots", with 20 parts of every character editable, "complete freedom for use of parts, color change, and cloth combinations," adjustable "body build and muscle" and ability to modify the character's voice. You can even buy parts and equipment to make your newly created character even more unique.</p>
<p>Information is also presented on the fighting mechanics like guard impact, instant impact, an armor bar, and something called soul impact: you attack an opponent until their health meter is red, then force them to block, and "when opponent is soul impacted, enter the heavy finish command to execute," noting that "performing soul impact is a victory, regardless of circumstances."</p>
<p>Another feature discussed is the Soulless Tower mode; but to us it sounds suspiciously like the Konquest Mode from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat:_Deception"><em>Mortal Kombat: Deception</em></a>. Full details are available at <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168422">1UP</a> and the Famitsu scan can be seen at the forums of <a href="http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169641">Cheap Ass Gamer</a>.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/soulcalibur-ivs-story-mode-to-feature-tag-team-swapping/">Soulcalibur IV's story mode to feature tag-team swapping</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 21:45:00 EST. Our frenemies at Xbox 360 Fanboy <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/06/26/xbox-com-pages-appear-soulcalibur-and-schizoid/">have noticed</a> an interesting trend: Pages appear for games at Xbox.com, then they're the next XBLA games released. Seriously, it's <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/06/21/xbox-com-ticket-to-ride-and-happy-tree-friends/">happened</a> <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/06/04/frogger-2-and-commando-3-xbox-com-pages-appear/">twice</a>. If we're in for a repeat performance, you can expect fighting classic <em>Soulcalibur</em> and former XNA title <em>Schizoid</em> to appear on the service next week, as pages for both have been discovered on the site.<br />
<br />
As developer Torpex has already said <em>Schizoid</em> is due next month, which would lend a little credence to the rumor, though <em>Soulcalibur</em> remains a wild card. The the suspense is all but unbearable, but at least we know it will end Monday when the real additions are revealed.<br />

It happened <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/21/xbox-com-ticket-to-ride-and-happy-tree-friends/">this week</a>. And <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/04/frogger-2-and-commando-3-xbox-com-pages-appear/">a while before</a> that too. Hows about next week? Well if the trend continues as it has next week's XBLA releases will be dictated by this week's newly arrived <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/s/soulcaliburxboxlivearcade/">xbox.com</a> <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/s/schizoidxboxlivearcade/default.htm">pages</a>. The twin appearances in this case are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soul-calibur/"><em>Soulcalibur</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/schizoid">Schizoid</a>,</em> the classic weapons-based fighter and the neon-colored co-op shooter, respectively. While <em>Soulcalibur </em>didn't ever really have much of a rumored release date to help corroborate this thing, <em>Schizoid </em>is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/torpex-confirms-schizoid-will-release-this-july/">set to release</a> sometime in July, so we could definitely see the pattern continue next week. And as always, thar be screenshots!<br />

If <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168394">1UP</a>'s mysterious Quartermann is to be believed, the PS3 version of <em>Soulcalibur IV</em> may be a rather dark, broody, angst-ridden fighter. Not only will the PS3 version exclusively feature Star Wars' Darth Vader, it may also feature <em>God of War</em>'s always-angry Kratos. The character would make an excellent and logical addition to the Namco Bandai fighter, thanks to his over-the-top weapons-based moves. If he's not included in the upcoming fighter, we can only blame one thing: his chest is clearly not large enough.<br /><br /><em>Soulcalibur IV</em> is coming out next month, so all will be revealed in due time.<br /><br />[Via <a href="www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/rumor-kratos-in-ps3-version-of-soul-calibur-iv/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/rumor-kratos-may-be-in-soulcalibur-iv/">Rumor: Kratos may be in Soulcalibur IV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 23:42:00 EST. <div align="left">We've reported on this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/hori-bringing-soulcalibur-arcade-sticks-to-us/">before</a>, but those of you who are impatiently waiting for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/soul-calibur-iv/"><em>Soulcalibur IV</em></a> can curb your anticipation slightly by pre-ordering this official <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018OCJ60/002-7629580-2462469?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B0018OCJ60"><em>Soulcalibur Limited Edition Fighting Stick 3</em></a> by Hori. This limited edition peripheral will be released on June 24th and retails for $49.99, which is the same as the regular ol' Fighting Stick, so if you are a fan of <em>Soul Calibur IV</em> or fighting games in general, we'd say this is a must-have. Though you are going to have to play other fighting games with it for now, since <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZK7ZMQ/002-7629580-2462469?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B000ZK7ZMQ"><em>Soulcalibur IV</em></a> itself won't be released till a little over a month later, on July 29th.<br /></div>

In preparation of Namco Bandai's upcoming fighting game, Hori is set to release an arcade pad in the US. There are a few things of note of this peripheral, as noted by <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/06/09/hori-brings-soulcalibur-iv-arcade-sticks-to-north-america/">Siliconera</a>. Firstly, the PS3 pad is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018OCJ60/102-5946304-2779329?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B0018OCJ60">only $50</a> (as opposed to the Xbox 360's $60 controller). Secondly, Hori hasn't announced plans to bring this to Japan. Could the tables have finally turned? Strange!<br /><br />Hardcore fighting fans swear by arcade pads, opting not to use standard controllers. We'll see if <em>Soulcalibur IV</em> dominates the competitive fighting scene when it releases at the end of next month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/hori-bringing-soulcalibur-arcade-sticks-to-us/">Hori bringing Soulcalibur arcade sticks to US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 16:00:00 EST.
