Open for nearly two years at this point, Kuju-owned, digital distribution-focused doublesix studios has begun to get a foothold in the burgeoning digital landscape. Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz this week, studio head James Brooksby said he and his studio prefer the direct consumer communication offered when working with the PlayStation Network over Microsoft's Xbox Live.

"We listened to what people were saying and ... it will have features that people have asked for ... [when] we do our first expansion pack [it'll be] actually tailored according to what people are looking for," Brooksby said, noting, in his work with XBLA on the upcoming Southpark game, that Microsoft handles the community communication all by it's lonesome. "We're developing it for them and it's their relationship to take to the consumer and carry on," Brooksby says of the company. Though considering the recent closing of Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog, we're betting that relationship will fall more into the hands of the developer/publisher as time moves forward.
Burn Zombie Burn dev praises PSN for allowing closer consumer communication originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 16:30:00 EST. We've learned of the final five bonus tracks in Rock Band, and there are a few points of light here that will probably get a lot of you excited. Just a pro-tip from us to you: The cool kids should be jazzed about the inclusion of another song from the rad Freezepop. But if a smile sneaks on your face while thinking about screaming "Timmah!" into a microphone and being rewarded for it, we won't think any less of you.
Specificlaly, Stan and Kyle's friendship is put to the test when it's discovered that Stan is better at the game. The South Park Studios Production Blog has a writeup concerning the episode. Allow us to sum it up: think twice before you assume being good at Guitar Hero makes you cool. There's also a little video preview available in which we see Stan and Kyle facing off on "Carry on Wayward Son."

You can bet we'll be watching it tonight. If you were too busy playing Guitar Hero in your underwear on Monday, you may have missed the announcement that tonight's episode of South Park will feature the rhythm game prominently in the storyline. For those of you who just can't wait those last few hours, a Comedy Central press release reveals some more details about the impending rift between Stan and Kyle, and a short video preview shows the pair looking like total goobers while trying to look cool playing the game.

In fact, the false cockiness brought on by Guitar Hero was a major motivation for the production team. On his South Park Studios Production blog, Production Assistant Mike McMahan asks us to imagine "some jerk trying to impress the ladies with his badass skills banging out Coldplay as hard as he can." By playing Guitar Hero, McMahan says, "We're even worse than that loser, because we're pretending to be him, all the while tapping our feet and clicking our fingers with the same proud idiocy that the real-life jerk performs with." On behalf of all those proud idiots, we have just one thing to say to that ... Ouch!

We'll be liveblogging the episode right here on this very site, so come back here around 10 PM EST if you'd like some nerdy game discussion with your animated prime time TV.
Reminder: Guitar Hero on South Park tonight originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Nov 2007 12:27:00 EST. Last night the South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft" won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (less than one hour). If you still haven't seen the episode since we first reported the nomination in July, you can now always rent or buy the 10th season DVD set of South Park which includes the episode.

Season 10 also includes the episode where Cartman freezes himself so when he wakes up the Wii will be available -- things go horribly wrong. So go check out the Emmy-winning episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft" and the two-parter "Go God Go" for your South Park meets video game entertainment needs.

[Via FiringSquad]
South Park wins Emmy for World of Warcraft episode originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 09 Sep 2007 18:10:00 EST. Out of sheer boredom, we dusted off our Nintendo 64 and popped in South Park. It's not as fun as we remember it ... and we really didn't remember it being that fun in the first place. Still, as far as licensed products go, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Blizzard and its MMO World of Warcraft has been very kind to South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. In addition to providing source material (as well as helping with the filming) of the Emmy-nominated episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft."

Now the duo is returning the favor by including a 14-day trial of the MMO with its upcoming 10th season DVD collection, which includes the episode in question, according to a press release from Comedy Central. We already know that South Park's homage to World of Warcraft is one of the best episodes ever, but now the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences may agree because the episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft" just received an Emmy nomination. But, but, but the episode is inaccurate on various game issues we can hear the WoW fanboys scream already, pointing to things like The Renegade is wearing plate armor and mages clearly can't wear plate. Well, they went ahead and nominated the episode anyway.

The WoW episode wasn't even the only gaming related episode from the last television season. We also had Cartman altering the time line so he could get his hands on a Wii, where he eventually ended up in a war between atheists and it was even a two-parter. They didn't give that kind of treatment to the episode where the Xbox 360 showed up -- but we did eventually get a free HD episode out of the deal. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are clearly tapped into the internet generation so we're sure to see more gaming references and episodes in the future like the classic Chinpokomon episode.
South Park's World of Warcraft episode gets Emmy nomination originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 17:25:00 EST. As a fair warning, the joke of deleting the Mii and having one of your friends shout "Oh my God, they killed Kenny!" will be funny exactly once. And Zonks took full advantage of the customization features by creating a South Park car featuring our favorite four kids from Denver. It's very well done indeed.

We know Forza 2 has only been out for a few days, but we'd like to see how you've customized your racer. Have you gone old school and added some flames? Or did you decorate it based on some sort of theme? We'd like to see your customized car creations, so we'll sit in a circle and have a little show and tell session. Sony has unveiled more details on its ambitious "Dude, Get Your Own" advertising campaign for PSP. The promotion will focus on PSP's ability to play games and multimedia and should proudly showcase PSP's new, lower price. According to Sony, a television commercial will be airing now through the end of May on a variety of shows targeted specifically to teens. PSP fans will want to tune in to shows such as King of the Hill (FOX), South Park (Comedy Central), Adult Swim (Cartoon Network), the NBA Playoffs (TNT), Saturday Night Live (NBC), and WWE Smackdown (CW) to catch the new ads.

Online ads can also be found on IGN.com, Gamespot.com, ESPN.com and Maxim.com. Additionally, Sony plans to send promotional materials through direct mail. Later this week, Sony will be launching a new "Dude, Get Your Own" website, which will go into further detail about PSP's capabilities. (Hopefully, they'll create a new educational video, unlike the one featured here.)

This aggressive stance from Sony is certainly appreciated. There are too many myths about our handheld that must be dispelled: hopefully, this advertising campaign will make others experience the system and join the PSP Fanboy ranks.
Dude, Get Your Own campaign expands to television originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 07:45:00 EST. On the TV side, we have South Park, naturally on top, with UFC Fights, Star Trek Enterprise, and Jericho's HD content making the grade, and even the un-aired Mercy Reef/Aquaman pilot got on the list, after being released on the 12th. For films, We have The Departed and Snakes on a Plane in the top two, albeit in 480p. Crank, Saw III and The Illusionist also got proper recognition. For the complete list for both TV and Movies, check after the break.
Continue reading Video Marketplace top ten TV and Movies (3/12)

Video Marketplace top ten TV and Movies (3/12) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Mar 2007 11:30:00 EST. But we have a little surprise for our European friends overseas. Major Nelson took it upon himself to send the marketing team your complaints about the free episode not being available to all of Europe. And they listened. AceyBongo posted a blog to tell everyone that not only Belgium and the Netherlands will receive it, but ALL of Europe! Yup, your complaining paid off. As it stands, the US, Canada, all of Europe, and a few Asian territories will get the free download. Be sure to note that some countries in Europe may not be able to download the episode right away due to the change in plans, but be assured it is coming. So, enjoy your free episode of South Park ... you European folks earned it.

[Via Major Nelson]
South Park in HD for everyone (including Europe) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Mar 2007 11:45:00 EST. Comedy Central is releasing the first ever high definition episode of South Park on the Xbox Live Marketplace to all members (we're assuming this means Silver and Gold) for free. That's right, everyone's favorite word -- free. It will be on Marketplace at that low, low, price of free for two weeks, and will also be available as a free HD-DVD to people buying a new Xbox 360 console or the HD-DVD add-on drive at Best Buy from March 20th through April 3rd.

The episode is a couple of years old, but it is definitely a fan fave. It's 'Good Times With Weapons' from the 2004 season ... better known as the "South Park Ninjas episode. The style changes from the traditional cutout look into anime style pictured above, and it will look, er ... extra-animated in HD. Couple this with the fact that South Park's new season starts this Wednesday, and new episodes will be on XBLM each following week, the fanboys and fangirls should be fairly happy.

Still, for the price, who can complain? Let's hope this trend continues. Give us some free HD Battlestar Galactica episodes already. The timing on this is pretty interesting as well ... right after the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco. Does this mean Microsoft might be finally releasing the rumored Xbox 360 v2 with HDMI?
First ever HD South Park episode for free on Xbox Live Marketplace originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 04 Mar 2007 10:45:00 EST. But have people begun to go too far? When jokes are made about desperate measures on South Park, when a story (whether it's true or not) drifts through the internet about one mother's quest to get a Wii, and now, when someone seems to have died after a radio contest for a Wii ... have we maybe become a little too crazed? We'd love to hear what you think. Is it just a simple lack of consoles, or has demand become heated to the point that it's ridiculous? I'm not really certain why I haven't taken part in the download service, because it is quite easy. Though, it's probably because I'm not a huge home movie watching kind of guy and I'm not uber obsessed with current TV shows (although South Park does roxorz). The pricing structure isn't bad at all, I can't complain, especially if one only would want a certain episode instead of an entire boxed DVD season. But, I think the main reason I don't purchase content is because it's not as much of an impulse buy as shopping in the mall is. I actually have to purchase Microsoft Points, navigate to the content I want, and wait for it to download. Anyone out there a regular XBLM movie or TV show downloading whore? If so ... we'd like to hear your story.
Haven't downloaded TV or movies off of the XBLM originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 09 Dec 2006 22:00:00 EST. If you're one who enjoys their Wednesday nights in the form of watching South Park, perhaps sipping on a cup of hot Earl Grey, then you undoubtedly caught last night's episode featuring show staple Eric Cartman and his attempts to get his hands on the Wii. His desperation for the console -- something we know all too well here -- went so far that he attempted to freeze himself in order to instantaneously time travel to November 19th for the console's release.

Instead, things went wrong and Cartman found himself frozen for some 500+ odd years -- to a future where atheists were at war and somehow sea otters evolved to the point where they could talk and use assault rifles. Sadly, the episode is to-be-continued, so before we can see Cartman get his hands on a Wii -- which we assume will be next week's ending -- we're just going to have to wait.
South Park and the Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Nov 2006 10:05:00 EST. What "game" would that be? Hint: it's the one with motion controlled controllers. Nope, the other one. Yeah, the Wii.

The clever chaps behind South Park have once again shown that their ears are attuned to the off-rhythm beat of gaming (and internet) culture: Pokemon, PSP, Xbox 360, World of Warcraft, and now Wii-steria. Tonight's episode featured series favorite Eric Cartman pining for Nintendo's Wii which -- just like in our slightly better animated real world -- won't be available for another three weeks. So, what's a sleepless fanboy to do? Cryogenically freeze oneself of course! Unfortunately, Cartman finds himself five-hundred years in the future, in a world where atheists are at war with each other and video games don't exist anymore. This to-be-continued episode left out the remainder of Cartman's quest, so if anyone is planning on following this course of action, you may want to wait until next week to figure out how to get back to our time.

We've provided a brief transcription from the beginning of the episode after the break.

[Thanks for the image ElChibo!]
Continue reading South Park: Waiting for Wii is like "waiting for Christmas times a thousand"

South Park: Waiting for Wii is like "waiting for Christmas times a thousand" originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Nov 2006 23:50:00 EST. Cartman, "a mighty dwarf," takes back from a bathroom break before they all take on a quest. The boys collide with a half-naked avatar who dances and then kills the boys ... without agreeing to a duel! Ooh, he breaks the rules. Blizzard is helpless to stop them -- he can actually kill admins. So all the children -- even Butters, who had to switch from Hello Kitty Island Adventures -- all band together to stop the foe. Failing that, the boys power-level for over 17 days in the small hope that they can overcome the foe with "absolutely no life."

A majority of the episode takes place in World of Warcraft, and the in-game choreography is superb. The episode is more of an homage to WOW than a satire, though it has its moments of absurdities (especially when involving the Blizzard staff). It's the hardcore World of Warcraft players that get the butt of most jokes. Portrayed as overweight, Rockstar-drinking, pimple-faced nerds with carpal tunnel syndrome, these "pros" are shown as possibly having even less than no life.

It's the craziness you would expect from Parker and Stone, with due respect given to the source material. Relation to video games aside, it's a great social satire that ranks with some of the better episodes.

"Scroll over him with your mouse cursor and ... right click!"

[Update 1: Here's another take on the episode from sister site TV Squad. 2: Grab the entire episode over at You NEWB.]
Joystiq review: South Park makes love, not Warcraft [update 2] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Oct 2006 23:30:00 EST.
This may be old as hell, but it's just too good to pass up. In this hilarious clip from South Park, we can now solve the age-old question of why the PSP was created - to defeat Satan and his hellish minions.

In a parody of Lord of the Rings, Kenny, who honed his skills slaughtering digital demons on the PSP, must single-handedly combat Satan's onslaught of heaven with the ultimate weapon - the Golden PSP.

Wow, what I wouldn't give for a Golden PSP, but knowing Sony, I'd most likely have to sell my wife into slave labor just to afford one. However, it just might be worth it.

In one scene (seen here), Stan, Kyle, Butters, andKenny are all using wired controllers. What up with that?

Could this be a hint? Is Microsoft planning amajor Xbox 360 announcement at E3? A revelation that would trump anything that Nintendo or Sony could whip out? A newXbox 360 model with four - yes, four! - USB ports?

Consider this ... what if Microsoft hasalready played out wireless? Heck, for that matter, what if the next-gen forerunner has already played out the entireHD era (notice the standard def hookup)? Is the next turn for Microsoft ... the retro era? A mess oftangled wires ... a pile of dusty cartridges ... 2D-pixelated Halo? C'mon, admit it, that would better thanany of this Wiimote propaganda or those fourth dimension rumors we've been hearing from the other guys.

...Okay, we're just being silly - we'll stop. So did anyone else catch the South Park episode last night?
Xbox 360 spotted on South Park ... with 4 wired controllers? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 May 2006 12:46:00 EST. Southpark, apparently. It seems that Matt Stone and Trey Parkerdeemed our shiny little handheld intrusive enough to dedicate an entire episode to it, and as always, it manages to besomewhat insightful and offensive at the same time.

Here are some of the lines from the show that made uscringe (but yeah, it made us laugh too):

"The Sony PSP was built by God to determine who onearth had the best skills to defeat the armies of Satan."

"Japanese people don't havesouls."

"My God, this is an even bigger battle than the one in the 'Lord of the Rings'movie!"

"This is SO old!*"

*That really wasn't in the episode, although youwere probably thinking it when you saw the post.

We're not even going to discuss the legal implicationsof this online clip (an entire episode posted for free? The nerve!) We will, however, warn the uninitiated thatthis episode, just like every other Southpark episode that's ever aired, contains subject matter and language that maytick some people off. Now that's out of the way, enjoy the show!
Southpark does the PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Mar 2006 10:30:00 EST.
