In fact, had it not been for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/nintendos-ds-holiday-lineup-reveals-fieldrunners-art-style-an/">Nintendo's release calendar</a>, we wouldn't have been certain of the release date (October 20 -- a.k.a. <em>next Tuesday)</em> until today, when Taito's parent company, Square Enix, confirmed it. Is it too late to pre-order?<br /><br />And so, we're only too happy to use this occasion to refresh your memory: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/reminder-space-invaders-extreme-2-out-extremely-soon/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme 2</em></a> is out very soon! In fact, it's been out all month in Europe and has garnered <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/spaceinvadersextreme2">positive reviews</a>. Turn on a strobe light and have a look at the new screens to prepare yourself for the sequel to one of the best games of 2008.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-10-16-09/">Space Invaders Extreme 2 (10/16/09)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-10-16-09/#2370073"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/sie2101602_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-10-16-09/#2370074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/sie2101606_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-10-16-09/#2370075"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/sie2101608_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-10-16-09/#2370076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/sie2101604_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-10-16-09/#2370077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/sie2101605_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/reminder-space-invaders-extreme-2-out-extremely-soon/">Reminder: Space Invaders Extreme 2 out extremely soon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 12:15:00 EST. Hence, the <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/engadget/videos/651/">gameplay-less video above</a>, captured by Engadget during a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/tgs-2009-body-on-project-natal-with-space-invaders-extreme/">Natal preview</a> of <em>Beautiful Katamari</em> and <em>Space Invaders Extreme.</em><br /> <br /> Watch as Project Natal creative director Kudo Tsunoda shows how one rolls giant sticky balls or pushes back extraterrestrial attackers using only one's limbs. Explaining Project Natal's mantra of fun and accessibility can't be the easiest task in the world, especially since it has to be done while ricocheting about in front of a motion-detecting camera. And despite that, creative director Kudo Tsunoda makes it look easy, calmly elaborating on Natal's goals and features while he dances about in a room full of journalists. <br />
<br />
We've heard it before: Natal is Microsoft's sledgehammer, swung straight into the walls that years of button pressing and circle strafing have slowly erected around traditional gaming. We've seen similar attacks from Nintendo's Wii, as well as from the massive genre of the Instrument Protagonist, but Microsoft is hoping for much more than a dent. In the wall. Do you get it?<em> It's like a metaphor and stuff</em>. <br />
<br />
The bizarre problem with Natal in its early state is that it, um, works. The technology is clearly functional -- heck, it's vaguely magical -- which makes the absence of truly compelling software almost immediately disappointing. Anyone can simply hop in front of the camera, which never seems to stop and ask, "Who are you and where did you come from -- and why are you so fat compared to the last person?" You're recognized within seconds and can start playing a moment later. And then you slap flying balls.<br />
<br />
It's a bit of an unfair demand considering the product's not due until 2010, but the impatience is testament to the convincing nature of the technology itself. In the meantime, Microsoft is exploring Natal's tricks in two existing games: <span style="font-style: italic;">Beautiful Katamari</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders Extreme</span>.<br />

We know if <em>we</em> were about to sell people the sequel to one of the best DS games of last year, we'd ... mention it, occasionally. Thankfully for our sanity, the company <em>did</em> make an announcement today, cementing a PAL release date of October 2.<br /><br />While we wait for a firmer North American release date than "fall," we'll just enjoy these screenshots the company sent out with the PAL announcement. We're sure we'll be exploring the bingo system and falling into a techno-music-induced Nagoya-attacking trance soon enough.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-09-10-09/">Space Invaders Extreme 2 (09/10/09)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-09-10-09/#2273044"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sie2091015_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-09-10-09/#2273045"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sie2091001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-09-10-09/#2273046"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sie2091002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-09-10-09/#2273047"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sie2091006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-extreme-2-09-10-09/#2273048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sie2091003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/space-invaders-extreme-2-landing-in-europe-october-2/">Space Invaders Extreme 2 landing in Europe October 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 14:46:00 EST. If you've got a hankering for some more alien destruction with a musical twist, you'll be happy to know that some <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/0ccf0001-0000-4000-8000-000058410996?cid=SLink">new DLC</a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders-extreme"><em>Space Invaders Extreme</em></a> has landed on Xbox Live Marketplace. Entitled, simply, <em>Space Invaders Extreme </em>Expansion Pack, the DLC grants players access to the original versions of <em>Space Invaders</em> and <em>Space Invaders II</em>. According to <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59169">Shacknews</a> -- though not mentioned on the XBLM description -- the DLC will also include new stages and bosses for the main game as well. The price of entry is 240<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" />.<br /><br />The expected <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/arkanoid-live">Arkanoid Live</a> </em>DLC arrives today as well. There are two bits of DLC, <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/0ccf0001-0000-4000-8000-000058410991?cid=SLink">Episode Add-on Pack 1</a> and <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/0ccf0002-0000-4000-8000-000058410991?cid=SLink">Episode Add-on Pack 2</a>. The Xbox.com descriptions of the DLC are pretty vague, but we're just going to go out on a limb here and guess that each pack adds one of the two missing episodes -- the ones that are grayed out in the main menu -- to the game. Each piece of <em>Arkanoid</em> DLC runs for 240<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" />.<br /><br /><a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/0ccf0001-0000-4000-8000-000058410996?cid=SLink">Source</a> - Xbox Live Marketplace: Space Invaders Extreme<br /><a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410991/">Source</a> - Xbox Live Marketplace: Arkanoid Live<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/17/space-invaders-extreme-arkanoid-dlc-invade-xbox-live/">Space Invaders Extreme, Arkanoid DLC invade Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 15:05:00 EST. It's time to check in with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-live-top-ten">Xbox Live Top 10</a> again, and <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/05/12/live-activity-for-week-of-may-4th.aspx">Major Nelson</a> informs us folks were pretty much playing the same stuff they've always been playing last week. Snagging the top spot again was none other than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-3"><em>Halo 3</em></a> (big surprise there), however folks set aside some time to head into the Wastes with a bit of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fallout-3"><em>Fallout 3</em></a> (thanks to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/fallout-3-broken-steel-trailer-not-for-the-spoiler-shy/">Broken Steel</a>, no doubt). <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a> </em>managed to hold onto last place, with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/16/ufc-2009-demo-grapples-psn-xblm-next-week/"><em>UFC 2009 Undisputed</em> demo</a> also being a hot item for gamers last week.<br /><br />On the XBLA side, people have been enjoying the colorful <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/x3f-tv-xbla-in-brief-zombie-wranglers-arkanoid-live-space/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme</em></a>, as well as the usual amounts of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/18/x3f-tv-xbla-in-brief-hasbro-family-game-night/">Hasbro Family Game Night</a> </em>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/castle-crashers"><em>Castle Crashers</em></a>. Invading the list (rather surprisingly, we might add) in last place is <em>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles</em>, which we guess can be attributed to people needing a fix after seeing the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/01/turtles-in-time-remake-in-development-for-xbla-possibly-psn-and-wiiware/">new</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/cam-footage-of-tmnt-turtles-in-time-remake-spotted/">version</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/12/xbox-live-top-10-halo-3-and-the-usual-suspects/">Xbox Live Top 10: Halo 3 and the usual suspects</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 May 2009 16:30:00 EST. First, the <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/x3f-tv-xbla-in-brief-zombie-wranglers-arkanoid-live-space/">Xbox Live Arcade port</a> was released in North America. Now, the DS sequel is officially headed to Europe, with Square Enix releasing this fall. We guess the company decided not to use the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/nintendo-of-europe-stealth-announces-another-code-r-space-invad/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme 2</em><em>Remix </em>title</a> under which the game was previously listed. <em>SIE 2</em> features a new "Beginner's Course" in addition to a weird "Bingo" system for unlocking the game's Fever Mode. New music, new power-ups, and "higher stage volume" are also included.<br /><br />To help tide lucky European gamers over until fall, Taito also announced that it will release <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/gamefly-reveals-north-american-boxart-for-space-bust-a-move/"><em>Puzzle Bobble Galaxy</em></a> this summer. It's <em>Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-Move</em>, with online play and new gameplay modes, including one in which you have a limited number of bubbles, and one in which you have <em>one</em> bubble per stage. Games have come a long way since joystick jockeys first spent hours dropping quarters into <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders">Space Invaders</a></em>. Now on the heels of <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/this-wednesday-zombie-wranglers-arkanoid-and-space-invaders/">XBLA debut</a>, series' creator Tomohiro Nishikado has spoken out on the state of games today, observing that originality has suffered despite advances in technology.<br /><br />"I think the focus on unique concepts and gameplay has waned with the evolution of technology," commented Nishikado in a <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/05/66479041/1">recent interview</a>. While the iconic game designer praised new tech for allowing developers to create most anything they can imagine, he called out the industry for churning out "replicated gameplay formats and concepts," adding that "people are growing tired of playing the same thing." We'd be hard pressed to argue the point, though with games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/noby-noby-boy"><em>Noby Noby Boy</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/noby-noby-boy">Rhythm Heaven</a></em> (a game Nishikado calls "excellent"), we still think there is a spark of originality out there. What about you?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/08/space-invaders-father-nishikado-calls-todays-games-improved-re/">Space Invaders father Nishikado calls today's games improved, recycled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 May 2009 08:45:00 EST. Siliconera reports that the Xbox 360 will play host to a number of high-profile titles in Japan in the months ahead, 31 in all, including <em>Magna Carta 2</em> in August and tri-Ace RPG <em>End of Eternity </em>(sadly not based on the Isaac Asimov novel) in the winter.<br /><br />Japanese gamers will finally get to suit up as a decidedly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/mass-effect-2-teaser-gives-grim-fate-to-shepard-and-co/">not dead yet</a> Commander Shepard when the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mass-effect"><em>Mass Effect</em></a> finally graces Japanese store shelves on May 21, while players will have to wait until later this summer to cure the locust plague in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears of War 2</em></a>. <br /><br />Another 14 XBLA titles were confirmed at the event, including the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/voot-virtual-on-oratorio-tangram-coming-to-xbla/">previously announced</a> remake of mech shooter <em>Virtual On Oratorio Tangram</em>, which will arrive in Japan on April 29. Other notable upcoming downloads include <em>Mega Man 9</em> in June, <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> this spring and <em>The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match</em> sometime in 2010. And what of Square Enix, which plans fill Japanese XBLA appetites this year with puzzler <em>Yosumin Live</em>, <em>Project Cube</em> and the wonderfully titled<em> 0 Day Attack on Earth</em> (pictured)? Well, we have those trailers for you after the break.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/04/21/this-is-what-microsoft-has-planned-for-japanese-retailers-for-now/">Source</a>: This Is What Microsoft Has Planned For Japanese Retailers For Now<br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/04/21/square-enix-and-snk-blast-announce-xbox-live-arcade-games/">Source</a>: Square Enix And SNK Blast Announce Xbox Live Arcade Games<br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/04/21/watch-some-square-enix-xbox-live-arcade-trailers/">Source</a>: Watch Some Square Enix Xbox Live Arcade Trailers<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/microsoft-readying-31-game-barrage-for-japan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Microsoft readying 31-game barrage for Japan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/microsoft-readying-31-game-barrage-for-japan/">Microsoft readying 31-game barrage for Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Apr 2009 09:25:00 EST. I keep telling people I played <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders-extreme/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme</em></a> at GDC, and they all say the same thing: "Dude, that's been out for a while." But, A-HA! It hasn't. The kicker is that the DS and PSP versions have been out for so long that the DS version already has a <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/everybody-dance-now-space-invaders-extreme-2-trailer/">sequel out</a> (in Japan), but the XBLA version is brand new and comes out at the end of April. "Yeah," you're saying, "but it's a downloadable <em>Space Invaders</em> title. What do I care?" Well, if you like having fun, then you'll care aplenty. <br />
<br />
The game scored 84 and 85 on the PSP and DS respectively on <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sort=relevance&amp;termType=all&amp;ts=space+invaders+extreme&amp;ty=0&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">Metacritic</a>, and the XBLA version just improves on those versions. We spent some hands-on time with the game at GDC, and you can see what we thought after the break. Peep the new video above, the gallery below, and blast your way on in.<br />

As it turns out, <em>yes</em>, it did -- <em>this one exactly</em>. If you were <em>at all</em> into the first game, watch the latest trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/first-hypnotic-footage-of-space-invaders-extreme-2/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme 2</em></a> (after the break) and tell us that this is not something you want to play. It would be hard to call something <em>better</em> than the first game, but the sequel looks quite a bit more <em>extreme.</em> Maybe we're being influenced by the <em>dance music</em>, but we are <span style="font-style: italic;">pumped</span> about <em>Space Invaders 2 </em>now. Not that we weren't before! <br /><br />The footage basically rules out an eventual announcement of a PSP version -- in the previous game, it wasn't that hard to adapt the levels to a single screen, but there's a lot more stuff happening on both screens simultaneously now, like bonus round bosses on the top screen and normal play on the bottom. It's sad for PSP <span style="font-style: italic;">SIE</span> fans, but an interesting new gameplay development for DS owners.<br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14970331&amp;postcount=56">NeoGAF</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/everybody-dance-now-space-invaders-extreme-2-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Everybody dance now: Space Invaders Extreme 2 trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/everybody-dance-now-space-invaders-extreme-2-trailer/">Everybody dance now: Space Invaders Extreme 2 trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Mar 2009 15:00:00 EST. Admittedly, it hasn't been very long, but we've still been in total agony. <br /><br />As expected, <span style="font-style: italic;">SIE 2</span> doesn't stray far from the original formula: the player shoots at Invaders of various colors, shapes, and sizes, with the sounds of the shots syncing to both the thumping and psychedelic backgrounds. You can see the new "bingo" system in the beginning of the video, in which a bonus round is unlocked by shooting Invaders of the same color, corresponding to a line of colored blocks in a square.<br /><br />And now for some wishful thinking: who thinks the announcer is just part of the video and not in the actual game?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/first-hypnotic-footage-of-space-invaders-extreme-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First hypnotic footage of Space Invaders Extreme 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/first-hypnotic-footage-of-space-invaders-extreme-2/">First hypnotic footage of Space Invaders Extreme 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 19:00:00 EST. Importer NCSX has begun taking preorders for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/23/rumor-retailers-leak-space-invaders-extreme-2-list-features/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme 2</em></a> on the DS, which means that their distributor has probably started listing it, and it's therefore <em>pretty likely</em> to really be a real game. There's no word yet about a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/space-invaders-extreme-ds-vs-psp/">PSP version</a>. NCSX's preorder listing confirms the March 26 release date we previously posted. Who's got $43.90?<br /><br />Thanks to the efforts of ... someone who is better than we are at reading Japanese, the new "Bingo Mode" is detailed as well. In this new mode, an onscreen Bingo card fills up as you shoot Invaders, and you win when ... you know, you would normally win at Bingo. Except, instead of yelling "Bingo", your DS will issue more of a "pew pew pew" noise. <br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/space-invaders-extreme-2-is-so-real-you-can-preorder-it/">Space Invaders Extreme 2 is so real you can preorder it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. <br />My fingers hurt. If <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> is anything, it's an absolute workout for the fingers, a test of endurance, passion, and an opportunity for developer Taito to take an old formula and crank things up to 11. Very rarely does slapping on the word 'extreme' actually mean anything, but this latest incarnation of <em>Space Invaders</em> is an exception to that rule, as my sore thumbs can attest.<br /><br />Did you miss out on the original <em>Space Invaders</em>? The classic was before your time, perhaps, or deemed unworthy for whatever coins you could bleed out of your piggy bank. Dry your tears, friend! This extreme update of a retro classic is your greatest chance to find peace in these discordant times. Come along with this week's edition of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/gaming-to-go/">Gaming to Go</a> to see why saving quarters all those years ago might have been a good idea after all.*<br /><br />*So now you can buy this, see? Not because the original was bad or ... nevermind.<br /><br /><br /> <style type="text/css"> #ninbutton { border-style: solid; border-color: #000; border-width: 2px; background-color: #BBB; color: #000; text-decoration: none; width: 100px; text-align: center; padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } .buttontext { color: #000; text-decoration: none; font: bold 14pt Helvetica; } #ninbutton:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #BBB; background-color: #000; } </style> <center>

Here? We want to hear about some of the best, but with a twist: we want to know what games you recommended most often. Did you tell all your friends that the <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/paddle">paddle</a> controller made <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> the business? Want a cheap stocking stuffer for a PSP owning friend? It launched at $20, and that was already a bargain. Now, at $10, there's little excuse not to have it in your collection. The PEGI watchdogs at <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/12/15/space-invaders-extreme-also-invading-playstation-network/">Siliconera</a> have discovered yet another PlayStation Network downloadable: <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em>. Taito's re-imagining of the classic arcade shooter got tons of accolades for its psychedelic visuals and music when the game launched on PSP and DS earlier this year. Backbone Entertainment will be responsible for bringing the action from the tiny screens to the big 1080p screen. No other details are known at this time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/space-invaders-extreme-heading-to-playstation-network/">Space Invaders Extreme heading to PlayStation Network</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 10:45:00 EST. For this edition of Bury the Shovelware, we're talking <em>Space Invaders</em>. We'll be examining the recently released and critically acclaimed <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> against 2005's suspected shovelware <em>Space Invaders Revolution</em>.
<br /><br />

<h3>Pedigree</h3>

<em>Space Invaders</em> is a staple of the industry. Some incorrectly identify it as the first video game. Though this is incorrect, its significance to gaming as a whole just might make it the most important game of all-time. Released in 1978, the title was groundbreaking in that it changed the public's perception of gaming from being an interesting obscurity to a major form of entertainment. Check your local <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_invaders"><em>Wikipedia</em></a> for more information.
<br /><br />
Like many classics, the game has been re-packaged and re-released countless times. In its four years of life, two separate versions of the game have been released for the DS. Both versions were developed by industry veteran Taito, creator of the original ground-breaking title. But while <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> was published by heavyweight Square Enix, <em>Space Invaders Revolution</em> was published by Rising Star Games. Though virtually unknown by comparison, the publisher has been given access to a surprising number of classic franchises, including <em>Bomberman, Dungeon Explorer, Bubble Bobble,</em> and <em>New Zealand Story</em>.

Been jonesing to play more <em>Arkanoid</em> ever since that thing came out back in 1986? It was Breakout on steroids, and ate quarters like Cookie Monster eats chocolate chip cookies. <em>Super Arkanoid</em> and <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> will be out on XBLA this winter, and it'll be joined next year by <em>Metal Slug 7</em> , <em>R-Type</em> and <em>The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match</em>. <br /><br />The games will all be updated with new graphics, music, two-player and online modes, and will do a good job towards filling that vintage hole in your heart. Ushering in the 30th anniversary of a true gaming classic, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders-extreme/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme</em></a> is set to rekindle respect for all things retro. With all new add-ons and the obligatory face lift expected of a modern day remake, <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> takes good old-fashioned fun and transforms it in a refreshingly new spin of things without destroying the original formula. Is it the same game you've grown to love over the years? Yes, yes it is; however, it's so much more than that, too.<br /><br /><br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/psp-fanboy-review-space-invaders-extreme/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSP Fanboy review: Space Invaders Extreme</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/psp-fanboy-review-space-invaders-extreme/">PSP Fanboy review: Space Invaders Extreme</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Aug 2008 12:45:00 EST. One of the reasons that certain bloggers (namely, <span style="font-style: italic;">this</span> one) were so excited for the U.S. release of <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders Extreme</span> in the first place was because its <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/space-invaders-extreme-downloadable-demo/">downloadable demo for the PSP</a> was nothing short of <span style="font-style: italic;">awesome</span>. You can imagine, then, how torn we were when it came to choosing between the DS and PSP versions of the game. We only figured that some of our readers were going through the same dilemma, and thus we ended up trying out both just so that <span style="font-style: italic;">you</span> don't have to.<br /><br />If you want to see how <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders Extreme</span> DS and PSP stack up against each other, just click on past the break for a pretty chart and in-depth category breakdowns. <br /><br />

As DS fans, we play lots of games. There's just no getting around it, because the system is up to its eyeballs in great titles, <em>always</em>. So, we're often busy with this or that.<br /><br />We imagine you game quite a bit on the handheld, too. So, we have to ask: what is your recent favorite game? What game have you played lately that has blown you away? A little game called <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ds-fanboy-review-space-invaders-extreme/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme</em></a>? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/ds-fanboy-review-trauma-center-under-the-knife-2/"><em>Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2</em></a>? The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/ds-releases-for-the-week-of-june-30/">big release this week</a> is none other than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/under-the-knife-2"><em>Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2</em></a>. It's important that we learn, so we can get <em>1 vs. 100</em> (omg!) the moment it's released.<br /><br />Surgery may not be our thing, but we've got a handle on sarcasm.<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>1 vs. 100</em></li>
    <li><em>AMF Bowling Pinbusters!</em></li>
    <li><em>Ducati Moto</em></li>
    <li><em>Journey to the Center of the Earth</em></li>
    <li><em>Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2</em></li>
</ul>
Stagger past the break to see what's out in the rest of the world.<br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/ds-releases-for-the-week-of-june-30/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DS releases for the week of June 30th</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/ds-releases-for-the-week-of-june-30/">DS releases for the week of June 30th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Jun 2008 13:15:00 EST. Why are some guys so much more popular with the ladies than others? They have the sense and money to wear <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/be-the-most-stylish-person-at-the-pokemon-tournament-not-just-t/">righteous clothing</a>, a luxury many of us simply can't <strike>be bothered with</strike> afford. Well, picking up this rad hoodie from <a href="http://stores.ebay.com/Thrifty-Beatnik-Vintage-Clothing-UK">Thrifty Beatnik's store</a> is sure to attract plenty of people -- until they realize it's covered with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders/"><em>Space Invaders</em></a>.<br /><br />Which is rad -- or at least, we think so. Are friends <em>really</em> your friends if they don't like <em>Space Invaders</em>? Maybe, but you'd better educate them in the ways of video gaming history quicksmart. In fact, start them off <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-space-invaders-extreme-but-w/">right here</a>, then move along to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ds-fanboy-review-space-invaders-extreme/">way of the future</a>. That hoodie will cement your place in stardom for years to come -- until <em>Space Invaders</em> becomes uncool. Which is probably <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/space-invaders-on-your-neck-ears-and-waist/">never going to happen</a>.<br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://technabob.com/blog/2008/06/27/space-invaders-hoodie-keeps-aliens-elements-out/">Technabob</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/cool-hoodie-space-invaders-what-more-do-you-need/">Cool hoodie, Space Invaders -- what more do you need?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST. Anticipating a game can be a very dangerous diversion. If you have high hopes for a title, it's easier to find yourself disappointed than satisfied. This is what I was afraid of with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/metareview-space-invaders-extreme/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders Extreme</span></a>; after drooling over the renovated Taito classic for months on end, I was worried that my expectations would set the bar too high. Basically, if it didn't completely blow my mind, the game was going to be a letdown.<br /><br />Consider my mind blown.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ds-fanboy-review-space-invaders-extreme/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DS Fanboy Review: Space Invaders Extreme</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ds-fanboy-review-space-invaders-extreme/">DS Fanboy Review: Space Invaders Extreme</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 14:45:00 EST.
