Capcom not done with HD Remixing


Capcom's talking about HD remixing some more titles following the success of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Capcom VP Christian Svensson tells VideoGamer that not every game needs it, but the company is going to "potentially" apply the formula to other fighting games in the company's catalog. Next time, however, it plans do it "better, based on what [it] learned" -- which we'll take to mean cutting down development time.

When asked if Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would be HD-ified, Svensson commented that it's probably the title fans request the most, but he has no news to share about that. We know retro Mega Man is en vogue, but an HD remix of Mega Man 2 could be interesting.

Super Street Fighter II HD looks slightly less appealing, to some


Maybe it's just us but Super Street Fighter II HD Remix looks hella pretty. Pretty perfect, actually. Unfortunately some videophiles may not agree as news has come out that SSFIIHDR upscales in-game character sprites and crops backgrounds when played in 16:9 wide screen. According to notorious pixel counters Digital Foundry, SSFIIHDR is scaling characters and cropping backgrounds because the game was developed to be played old school, that is to say using 4:3 aspect ratio. While we like our games pretty we just don't see enough issue and it becomes even less apparent while you're playing the game. Videophiles have a right to know, though.

Street Fighter HD delayed for European PSN


Capcom has confirmed that Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has been delayed for the European PSN. There is currently no official release date for the title in the region and no explanation was given for the hold up.

North America is still expected to get the title today with its special Tuesday edition of the PSN update (due to the Thanksgiving holiday). European Xbox 360 owners should still be able to pick up the game when it launches on XBLA tomorrow.

Street Fighter II HD wins our love with Karate Kid homage

Watch out, '80s child. At the 40-second mark in the above Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix video, you might just experience a flashback to that time you wore your dad's bathrobe belt on your head, begged to take karate classes and ended up breaking your best friend's nose while attempting the crane kick. By using Joe Esposito's "You're the Best" theme from The Karate Kid, this trailer grips the nostalgia angle harder than Chun-Li's thighs ever could.

Super Street Fighter II THDR on track for 2008


Although it appears to be missing its summer release window, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is apparently in the "home stretch" according to Rey Jimenez, the game's associate producer.

In an interview with the Street Fighter Blog, Jimenez explains that the title is "closing out all the bugs" from the open beta and "other open issues." He believes that "barring any unforeseen catastrophic event," the game should be out this year. Given how jam-packed this holiday season is already, maybe a delay wouldn't be so "catastrophic" at this point.

Although we received numerous complaints yesterday that the beta wasn't working properly, this seems a good a time as any to link the definition: Beta. Super Street Fighter II XBLA beta begins today


Just in case you've completely forgotten why you really bought Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 on Xbox Live Arcade in the first place, allow us to jog your memory: the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta begins today. To access the beta, owners of Commando 3 should select the "SFII HD Remix Beta" option from the game's main menu, which will take them to a blade where they confirm the download. The SSFIITHDR beta will reside in the demo section of the games blade.

The beta will give players the option of using only Ken or Ryu in various online modes or in local two-player matches. Remember, this is a beta, so the actual purpose of it is to stress-test the network code for the multiplayer modes of the game. The beta will run until around August 20 or whenever Capcom decides to pull the plug. Don't worry, you'll probably get bored of Ken and Ryu by then.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta starts June 25


We'll be honest, at this point we wish Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix would finally release just so we never have to double-check that we spelled the title's name correctly again, but we still have this beta to get through. The Capcom Blog says the beta will begin June 25 and can only be accessed by purchasing the Xbox 360 version of Commando 3, which released today on XBLA.

On June 25, owners of Commando 3 will gain entry to the SSFIITHDR portion of the menu, which will take them to an XBL blade where they can download the beta. Capcom reiterates that the beta is unfortunately only available on Xbox 360 and not PS3. The release of SSFIITHDRWTFGTFOBBQ simply can't come fast enough.

Go behind the scenes of Street Fighter animations

Have you ever wondered how an animation is born? ... No, you probably haven't. Don't feel bad, neither had we. But once we saw this interesting look at how Capcom is cleaning up movements for their Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, we felt like we gained a new appreciation for the intricacies of animation.

Take, for example, the fact that some characters in Super Street Fighter II had motion blur while characters from Street Fighter II didn't? Isn't that fascinating? Hello? ... OK, so we admit this sort of "inside the sausage factory" stuff isn't for every one. But if you're a fan of the series, you'll want to take a look.

First Super Street Fighter II HD Remix video is underwhelming

So this is a fun lesson in how to handle your Super Street Fighter II HD Remix marketing campaign. Putting out a bunch of really sexy, high-def images of your characters is a great start. Following it up with great pictures of stages is just as good. But when things are going that well, don't let your first video be an ugly, poorly-lit shaky cam clip.

Here's a thought: What about capturing from the actual game? Sure, it's a few more wires to plug in, but isn't it worth it? See, when the whole point of your game is that it looks purty, you probably want a video that makes it look ... you know ... purty. As far as what we can see in this clip ... well, it looks like Street Fighter.

Capcom dates some downloadable games in development


Capcom announced ballpark dates and prices to go with some of the downloadable titles they plan to offer on Xbox Live Arcade, PSN and PC in the next half-year. The details were given in London, so to ere on the side of caution, we're going to call these Euro details until further notice -- we doubt that's the truth, but a little caution never hurts. The games are:
Capcom also said that (seriously these long titles need to stop) Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on PS3 will be available on PSN "soon" and "global headset support" will launch with the European version. Now if we could just get a better video of SSFIITHDR we might understand what's taking so long for the prettified update.

'Cammy' see more SSFIITHDR characters?


It's been a long time since we've seen new characters from Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, but today we've got Cammy above and M. Bison after the break. This all comes on the heels of Capcom asking for people to submit their vote in the Achievement Poll for the game.

There really isn't much to say on this art except that if you could please stop staring at Cammy's crotch for five seconds and finish the story you'll notice that we've got this neat little link here to all our previous coverage. Still no word on a release date, but apparently the online development is coming along fine.

Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix achievement poll


The polls are now open at the Capcom blog to vote for the Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix achievements. Like we reported back in July, Capcom asked for suggestions on what the achievements should be in SFIITHDR. It appears Capcom chose seven suggestions and posted them for the world to vote on (with proper registration at the Capcom site). The possible achievements are:
  • Beat Akuma (arcade mode)
  • Win with every character in an Online Ranked Match
  • 5 Perfect Rounds in Ranked Online Matches
  • 5 Perfect Rounds in Story Mode (Any Difficulty Level)
  • Defeat an opponent in under 15(?) seconds, Arcade Mode
  • Perform a 7-hit combo or higher (any mode, including training)
  • Defeat Sagat with Ryu's fierce dragon punch (any mode)
We kinda like all of them, hopefully beyond this publicity stunt Capcom may keep them all in. Capcom is also taking suggestions at the site for the achievements' actual names. With any luck they'll sprinkle some inside joke achievements in for the hardcore. So far this game really has done a great job with the community outreach.

First SSF2THDR stage unveiled: Vegas, baby

Capcom has released the first glimpse of a turbo-high-def-remixed Super Street Fighter II stage, Mike Bison's Balrog's Las Vegas strip, now saturated with bright purples. Background historians will also notice that the crowd has been scaled back from the original version, apparently to cut down on animations, in turn, decreasing the game size. Other modernization efforts bring bigger busts and an Escalade limo (thankfully, a pimp hat is still just a pimp hat). Most noticeably, the old Golden Nugget casino has been bulldozed, making way for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix's Crazy Buffalo; named in honor of one of Balrog's signatures.

Producer Rey Jimenez also fills us in on a new game mode, call it "re-balanced mode" for now. The optional mode is being designed with input from tourney players, but Jimenez doesn't elaborate further. Expect it to make the final version of the game as long as it doesn't "totally break" the gameplay.

Super SF II Turbo HD Remix achievement open call


Capcom is looking for your input into what the achievements should be for the Xbox 360 version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix – did we get the whole title in there? Capcom wants you to put your suggestions in the comment thread of their post on the issue. You can feel free to make suggestions below too, but we're not forwarding them to Capcom.

Of course, hardcore Street Fighter II players looking forward to SSFIITHDR are making suggestions like getting five perfects in a row or having a five to eight chain combo. We're still looking to achieve basic things like Zangief's pile driver, or for those seeking an even more basic achievement – just pull off a shoryuken. Capcom says they'll take the suggestions on August 1st and start sifting through them, then they'll take the ones that are actually technologically possible and send it back out to the community for voting. Come on shoryuken achievement!
