What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games. </small></font>

If you've spent any time with the Nintendo 3DS -- especially if that time was spent with the handheld's aeronautical launch title, <em>Pilotwings Resort </em>-- you're probably aware that flying games are right in this handheld's wheelhouse. Moving forward through the sky as objects and other pilots move towards, around and behind you looks invariably dope with the 3D slider turned on; this law is no less incontrovertible in the system's latest first-party remake: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-fox-64-3d"><em>Star Fox 64 3D</em></a>.<br />
<br />
But games can't live on <em>dopeness</em> alone -- they need meat on their bones as well. <em>Star Fox</em> has no lack of content, but if you owned the Nintendo 64 original and thoroughly explored its brief and branching campaign back in 1997, you've probably seen that content plenty of times before. Much like <em>Ocarina of Time 3D</em> before it, <em>Star Fox 64 3D</em> is banking on a single bulletpoint to earn your purchase: You've never seen that content quite like this.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/">Starfox 64 3D (Comic Con 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306878"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306879"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306880"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306881"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/starfox-64-3d-comic-con-2011/#4306882"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/starfox643dccscreens05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/deja-review-star-fox-64-3d/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: Star Fox 64 3D</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/deja-review-star-fox-64-3d/">Deja Review: Star Fox 64 3D</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 16:20:00 EST. Remember how fun <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-fox-64"><em>Star Fox 64</em></a> was? And remember how fun the multiplayer was, with the tanks and the Arwings? If you were looking for a more portable version of that multiplayer experience ... well, you won't find it in <em>Star Fox 64 3D</em>. Oddly enough, the original multiplayer mode has been scrapped in favor of something different.<br />
<br />
There are three different multiplayer modes: Survival, Score Attack and Time Attack. Survival is an elimination-based mode, while the latter two task players with scoring the most points overall in a match and in a set amount of time, respectively. Each of these game types modify the formula slightly, but overall the goal is the same: shoot everyone else and don't get shot yourself. It's basic stuff.<br />

Forgoing its usual Sunday release strategy, Nintendo has announced that <em>Star Fox 64 3D</em> will launch in North America on a Friday -- September 9, to be exact. That's only a week before the annual family trip to Canada for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vintage_Wings_of_Canada">the Vintage Wings air show</a>!<br />
<br />
Your family traditions aside, <em>Star Fox 64 3D</em> adds improved graphics, gyroscopic controls and an overhauled multiplayer experience to the N64 classic. Oh, and it's on the 3DS, so you know what that <em>entails</em>.<br />
<br />
You'll be able to read our preview of the multiplayer mode soon.<br />

It's looking to be a fairly delightful summer for folks waiting on pins and needles for renovated versions of Nintendo 64 classics on the 3DS. Just one day after announcing <em>The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/12/wii-play-motion-announced-for-june-13-ocarina-of-time-3d-follo/">June 19 release date</a>, Nintendo's uploaded a Japanese launch date for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-fox-64-3D"><em>Star Fox 64 3D</em></a> to the game's <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/aqej/index.html">official site</a>: The bestial flight combat simulator is scheduled to hit Japanese store shelves July 14.<br />
<br />
We've got our fingers crossed that <em>Star Fox</em>'s journey to North America will be as speedy as <em>Ocarina of Time</em>'s (which is coming out in Japan just three days before releasing in the U.S.). Is that wishful thinking? Perhaps. But hey, if we've gotta wish on something, we may as well wish upon a <em>Star</em>!<br />

If you've seen <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432283/">The Fantastic Mr. Fox</a>, then you're probably going to find this College Humor video entertaining -- if not, well, there isn't much we can say. Have you ever wanted to see <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-fox">Star Fox</a> play a banjo? <em>Star Fox 64 3D</em> is one of the few playable titles out of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/heres-the-list-of-every-3ds-game-in-development/">oodles of announced 3DS projects</a> on display at Nintendo's E3 booth. It's a short demo of the classic N64 game's first level, fading out after a few seconds of the boss battle.<br />
<br />
The 3DS version of <em>Star Fox 64</em> is instantly familiar to players of the original. The demo opens as you cruise over a short stretch of ocean (a shortened version of the original level's intro), soaring through a ravine into "Corneria City." The place is an obstacle course, the vision of some insane architect, and I crashed and collided with the archways and tumbling towers my first time through, as my eyes drifted down to the touch screen, which displayed the control layout.<br />

In response to a <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/38434/Miyamoto-My-best-is-yet-to-come">statement</a> from Shigeru Miyamoto indicating interest in a Wii <em>Star Fox</em> game, Kamiya expressed his own interest in a rather extreme manner. "I want Nintendo's staff to come to Platinum, stick guns at us and tell us 'You guys make a new <em>Star Fox</em>,'" he said on <a href="https://twitter.com/PG_kamiya">Twitter</a>. Why would Nintendo need to point guns at him? He wants to make the game! Of course, why would we expect logic from the mind behind <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/bayonetta">Bayonetta</a></em>?<br />
<br />
Kamiya said that he submitted an idea for a 3D shooter upon entry to Capcom, but scrapped it when <em>Star Fox 64</em> came out. That's how highly he thinks of <em>Star Fox 64</em>.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/19/platinums-kamiya-wants-to-make-a-new-star-fox-at-gunpoint/">Platinum's Kamiya wants to make a new Star Fox at gunpoint</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Apr 2010 19:28:00 EST. For being a Nintendo property, the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=star+fox">Star Fox</a> </em>series hasn't performed, well -- it hasn't performed like a Nintendo property. Gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto recently divulged to <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/10/27/mario-creator-talks-disappointment-with-star-fox/">MTV Multiplayer</a> that the series has been on the decline since its inception, with steadily declining sales for each new iteration.<br />
<br />
But, despite all of that, Miyamoto is still a "big fan" of the series. He says that every time a new entry releases, he's "hoping people will enjoy it as much as I do," but that -- in Japan, at least -- the series' popularity has not met with Nintendo's expectations over its lifespan. It's understandable, really; when a company puts out the best-selling "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/wii-fit-may-surpass-san-andreas-sales-wii-play-is-top-selling/">game</a>" of the last decade, it might find it hard to justify putting out something that isn't <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/new-super-mario-bros-wii">guaranteed</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-legend-of-zelda-spirit-tracks/">create giant piles of cash</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/miyamoto-a-big-fan-of-star-fox-says-series-popularity-on-the/">Miyamoto a 'big fan' of Star Fox, says series popularity on the decline</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 19:50:00 EST. The sequel to the SNES game that started it all was in production and the Japanese version was all but finished when Nintendo decided to pull the plug in favor of creating a game for its new console, the N64. That hasn't stopped the Nintendo loyal from wanting to play the game, and for the last six years, a small group of fans have been working on their own version of a sequel.<br /><br />The game is called <a href="http://www.shadowsoflylat.net/"><em>Shadows of Lylat</em></a> and will likely not be received so well at Nintendo HQ, though that hasn't stopped SOL Team from planning Windows, Mac OS, and Linux releases. If you're skilled in the ways of Code-Fu and want to lend your talents to the project, the team is looking for you! They can't promise you any money, but we're pretty sure you'll get all the disappointment you could ever want when the cease and desist letters start pouring in.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-lylat/">Shadows of Lylat</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-lylat/#2150831"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/shadowsoflylatimage8_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-lylat/#2150830"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/shadowsoflylatimage7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-lylat/#2150829"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/shadowsoflylatimage6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-lylat/#2150828"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/shadowsoflylatimage9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shadows-of-lylat/#2150827"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/shadowsoflylatimage20_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/07/after-6-years-fan-made-star-fox-looks-great.ars">Ars Technica</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/fans-creating-star-fox-sequel-it-doesnt-look-like-a-snes-game/">Fans creating Star Fox sequel (it doesn't look like a SNES game)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 19:35:00 EST. Only an utterly clueless fanboy will ignore Shigeru Miyamoto's contributions to gaming, and any Nintendo enthusiast can never deny the quality of a series like <em>Halo</em> or <em>God of War</em>. No matter the platform, there are games which make up the foundation of this medium as we've come to know it.
<br /><br />
Traditionally, the formula would seem to be <em>game made by a respectable company</em> + <em>a few years to let it sink in</em> = <em>indisputable classic</em>. Yet there are a few that still provoke debate.
<br /><br />
These are games that are neither universally adored nor hated. They almost always spark conversation, and are considered by some to be an acquired taste. Here are the Top 5 games that we all can't decide if they're classics or not.

That's just one of the perks of <em>having helped create <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Fox_%28video_game%29">Star Fox</a></em>, as founder Dylan Cuthbert did. At least, that's the message we drew from Cracked.com's list of video game characters that inspire <em>rage</em> -- of the fifteen personalities listed, around half appear in Nintendo games.<br /><br />While we wouldn't normally post about such lists, there's <em>very little room</em> for complaining about many of these choices. Time and again, Slippy's utter ineptitude has seen us launching spittle-flecked rants at our screens, Waluigi possesses a voice akin to nails on a blackboard (though this blogger will admit to finding him useful in <em>Mario Kart DS</em>), and Tingle is annoying for reasons that should need <em>no explaining whatsoever</em>.<br /><br />The only unfair inclusions we can see? The Dog from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/duck-hunt"><em>Duck Hunt</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/animal-crossing"><em>Animal Crossing: Wild World</em></a>'s Mr. Resetti, whose bluster we actually find entertaining. <em>Not that we're cheats</em>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://digg.com/gaming_news/The_15_Most_Annoying_Video_Game_Characters_of_All_Time">Digg</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/nintendo-dominates-list-of-most-annoying-game-characters/">Nintendo dominates list of most annoying game characters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. <br />That shot of the Great Fox can mean <em>only one thing</em>. Well, two things, actually. Firstly, it means that the dojo is back, and that our mornings have some purpose once more. Secondly, it means that <em>Brawl</em> will include yet more <em>Super Smash Bros. Melee</em> stages, to accompany the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/30/dojo-update-yes-hyrule-returns/">return of Hyrule Temple</a>.<br /><br />Corneria, Yoshi's Island, Onett, Brinstar, and Rainbow Ride are the returning stages, with Corneria comfortably our favorite of the revived bunch. It's also worth nothing that <em>Brawl</em>'s total number of confirmed stages is now <a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/stages/index.html">25</a>, with (we'd estimate) another dozen or so dojo updates left to add to that total. And, in the unlikely situation you ever get bored of those, you can always <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/29/dojo-update-stage-builder/">make your own</a>.<br /><br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/dojo-update-fight-over-corneria-all-over-again/">Dojo update: Fight above Corneria all over again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 12:45:00 EST. <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/promotionalconsideration">Promotional Consideration</a> is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.<br /><br />Though we featured a number of Zelda commercials <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/01/zelda-week-check-out-some-heroic-ads/">earlier this week</a>, like Vanessa Williams, we've saved the best for last. <em>The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening</em>, arguably the finest handheld game ever released, had its share of unusual ads, relying on corny rappers and wacky puppetry to sell the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ARPG/">ARPG</a> in the US and Japan. In the UK, however, gamers were treated to the slapstick humor of one of Britain's most distinguished comedians.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/07/promotional-consideration-drop-dead-zelda/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Promotional Consideration: Drop Dead Zelda</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/07/promotional-consideration-drop-dead-zelda/">Promotional Consideration: Drop Dead Zelda</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 07 Oct 2007 12:00:00 EST.
