If <em>Star Trek</em> was made in Japan and starred a bunch of angsty, futuristic, computer-generated teenagers instead of B-movie actors, and if it was a video game, it would probably look a lot like this. At least the part of the trailer <em>before</em> the sword fights and the demonstrations of language options.<br />
<br />
However, while <em>Star Trek </em> benefited from a vocal fan base that <em>saved</em> the original show from cancellation, people who have put time into <em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> are more likely to <em>warn </em>than evangelize.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/star-ocean-the-last-hope-international-trailer-boldly-goes-into/">Star Ocean: The Last Hope International trailer boldly goes into Trek territory</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 23:00:00 EST. It's an achievement made possible by ... the game having already been released a year ago.<br /><br />In addition to English and Japanese voices, this version includes French, Italian, German, and Spanish language options. And, perhaps most importantly for new players, the "running on a PS3" option.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-ocean-the-last-hope-international-ps3/">Star Ocean: The Last Hope International (PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-ocean-the-last-hope-international-ps3/#2395271"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/2009-10-19_21-29-26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-ocean-the-last-hope-international-ps3/#2395270"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/2009-10-14_19-35-34_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-ocean-the-last-hope-international-ps3/#2395269"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/2009-10-19_22-35-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-ocean-the-last-hope-international-ps3/#2395268"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/2009-10-14_19-34-54_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-ocean-the-last-hope-international-ps3/#2395267"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/2009-10-09_17-32-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/star-ocean-the-last-hope-international-lives-up-to-its-name/">Star Ocean: The Last Hope International lives up to its name</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Sep 2009 19:30:00 EST. Xbox 360 "exclusive" <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean-the-last-hope"><em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em></a> has appeared on <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/game/ps3/Star-Ocean-The-Last-Hope/139940/">GameFly</a> under the PS3 platform with a TBD release date. We followed up with GameFly and a company spokesperson let us know, "We simply post information as it is supplied to us by the publishers."<br /><br />Apparently, enough time has gone by for the "exclusive" game to do its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/xbox-360-outsells-ps3-in-japan-for-fourth-time-four-horsemen-dr/">damage to the competition abroad</a>. We're currently awaiting a response from Square Enix and we'll update as soon as we receive a transmission from the distant star system.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Square Enix has responded to our request for comment, saying that "[The GameFly listing] was an error, but we cannot comment on an official PS3 release [of the game]."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/ps3-version-of-star-ocean-the-last-hope-pops-up-on-gamefly/">PS3 version of Star Ocean: The Last Hope pops up on GameFly [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 16:30:00 EST. Launching on June 5, <em>The Last Hope</em> has already made the trek to North American gamers, but European users have an <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/05/26/only-europe-gets-a-star-ocean-the-last-hope-collectors-edition/">exclusive pack headed their way</a> to sweeten a possible purchase.<br /><br />Included in the special edition is the game, a 32-page guide, five <em>Last Hope</em> character cards, a compilation CD soundtrack and limited edition packaging.<br /><br />While we should be jealous of the bonuses included in the pack, we're more envious of the <a href="http://www.amstore.co.uk/cd-dvd/digistack-style-cases.html">digistack packing</a> used for the set. Thanks to this special edition, PAL users won't all have to deal with three discs stacked on top of each other, like North American gamers did. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean-the-last-hope"><em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em></a> will finally jump into European retail on June 5, according to a Square Enix press release (via <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2009/04/29/star-ocean-the-last-hope-gets-pal-release-date/">VG247</a>). The Xbox 360 exclusive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/star-ocean-the-last-hope-gets-earlier-release-date/">found its way</a> to Japan and North America earlier this year.<br /><br />In fact, <em>The Last Hop</em>e was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/vesperia-helps-xbox-360-outsell-ps3-in-japan/">another</a> JRPG that set the Japanese <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/xbox-360-outsells-ps3-in-japan-for-fourth-time-four-horsemen-dr/">sales charts ablaze</a> with Xbox sales when it released in February. The game will release in Europe right in the middle of the summer doldrums and should keep JRPG fans entertained until the fall release onslaught begins.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/29/star-ocean-the-last-hope-arrives-june-5-in-europe/">Star Ocean: The Last Hope arrives in Europe on June 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Apr 2009 13:30:00 EST. The Xbox 360 has only outsold the PlayStation 3 several times before, so we're reticent to bring the Four Horsemen out of their winter hibernation. However, if Japanese hardware sales tracker <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/media-create/">Media Create</a> is to be believed, the 360 not only outsold the PS3 in Japan last week, it handily trounced <span style="font-style: italic;">all</span> competition, with sales just over 25,000 units (compared to nearly 17,000 units for Wii and just over 16,000 for PS3).<br /><br /> Considering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean-the-last-hope"><em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em></a> was released this past week and is outselling every game on the chart by a margin of <em>at least</em> 3:1 (162,232 units, folks -- in <em>one week!</em>), we're taking a stab in the dark here and saying 360 sales had something to do with <span style="font-style: italic;">that</span>. After all, the last few times we put out a call to the horsemen, two other JRPG titles were to blame: <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/xbox-360-outsells-ps3-wii-in-japan/"><em>Infinite Undiscovery</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/vesperia-helps-xbox-360-outsell-ps3-in-japan/"><em>Tales of Vesperia</em></a>. <br /><br />Can you remember the other game that put 360 on top in Japan for a week? Hint: It involves fire and liberation and ... fighter jets. Give up? Too bad! We're still not telling!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/xbox-360-outsells-ps3-in-japan-for-fourth-time-four-horsemen-dr/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Xbox 360 outsells PS3 in Japan for fourth time, Four Horsemen draw closer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/xbox-360-outsells-ps3-in-japan-for-fourth-time-four-horsemen-dr/">Xbox 360 outsells PS3 in Japan for fourth time, Four Horsemen draw closer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 12:20:00 EST. You won't have to wait too long for the next <em>Star Ocean</em> game, friends across the Atlantic. Square Enix is localizing and releasing the game just one month after its American counterpart. You can expect the PSP-exclusive remake to arrive on February 13th.<br /><br />John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. comments, "2009 is set to be a landmark year for the <em>Star Ocean </em> series, I'm delighted that new fans can continue to experience this classic series with the release of <em>Star Ocean: The Second Evolution</em> for PSP and I hope players are excitedly looking forward to the forthcoming release of <em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em>."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/13/star-ocean-the-second-evolution-gets-european-release-date/">Star Ocean: The Second Evolution gets European release date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 13:45:00 EST. <em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> dares to go against almost every Square Enix convention. The game is supposedly the last of the franchise, a <em>final</em> fantasy in the <em>Star Ocean</em> universe. The game is being exclusively developed for Xbox 360 and is aiming for an almost-simultaneous worldwide release.<br /><br />And now, Square Enix is throwing away yet another long-running tradition: delays. Fans have become so accustomed to waiting, and Square Enix has the gall to release this game <em>earlier</em> than expected? <em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> will now appear in the US on February 24th, a full week earlier than previously announced.<br /><br />Square Enix, we're warning you -- we don't trust your new ways. You stop making ambiguously gendered buckle-wearing heroes, and we won't know you anymore!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/star-ocean-the-last-hope-gets-earlier-release-date/">Star Ocean: The Last Hope gets earlier release date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 19:59:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star_ocean"><em>Star Ocean: Second Evolution</em></a>, as the title implies, is a remake of the second <em>Star Ocean</em> game released back in 1999 on the original PlayStation. We're barely surviving 2008's consumerism climax and already publishers are dangling their 2009 wares in front of us. Alright, Square Enix, we'll play your despicable game, if only to take our minds off the current gaming glut. Square Enix's North American (and heavily subtitled) lineup for Q1 2009 is as follows:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Star Ocean: Second Evolution</em> (<strong>PSP / 6 Jan.</strong>): Being the remastered portable version of the interstellar -- and considered by some to be just plain stellar -- sequel. Features new voice work, new cutscenes and people crying in space.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride</em> (<strong>DS / 17 Feb.</strong>): Being the hitherto unlocalized entry in the venerable RPG series. Yes, Dragon Ball Z guy designed these characters too.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> (<strong>Xbox 360 / 3 Mar.</strong>): Being tri-Ace's long-awaited <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean-the-last-hope">continuation</a> of the science-fiction franchise. The subtitle implies that this is a big deal for the Xbox 360 in Japan.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume</em> (<strong>DS / 17 Mar.</strong>): Being the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/square-enix-preps-valkyrie-profile-for-the-ds/">third instalment</a> in the respected <em>Valkyrie Profile</em> series. If you're looking for an explanation of the title, we're afraid you're plume out of luck.</li>

RPG fanatics have probably heard this tale before, but there's a bit of history behind the very first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean"><span style="font-style: italic;">Star Ocean</span></a> game. Back in 1995, a majority of the team that created <span style="font-style: italic;">Tales of Phantasia</span> (which was released stateside on the Game Boy Advance back in 2006) left Namco due to creative differences. The team moved onto Tri-Ace, whose debut title was <span style="font-style: italic;">Star Ocean</span>. One of the last games for the aging Super Famicom, the RPG pushed the console to its limits in terms of the cartridge size and graphics. The game even had limited voice-acting, which was unheard of (no pun intended) in those days. The question is, does this remake of the first game in the classic franchise have what it takes to stand out in the portable gaming market?<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/psp-fanboy-review-star-ocean-first-departure/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSP Fanboy review: Star Ocean: First Departure</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/psp-fanboy-review-star-ocean-first-departure/">PSP Fanboy review: Star Ocean: First Departure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 22:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean"><em>Star Ocean: First Departure</em></a> was first announced for Europe in late August, though a specific date was yet to be determined. However now, we now know that the tri-Ace space voyager will be releasing in Europe on October 24 -- three days behind the North American date.<br /><br />That's good to know for all you RPG fanatics that live over yonder. In celebration of this news, we've got ten new screenshots in our gallery for you to enjoy.<br /><br />[Via press release]<br />

<div align="left">Having played all the <em>Star Ocean</em> titles officially available in North America, I was more than eager to try out Square-Enix's remake of the game that started it all. As most <em>Star Ocean</em> fans know, the original title was released on the Super Famicom in 1996 but never saw the light of day in the US, so this PSP-exclusive remake is the first time many of us will be playing the game. Read on to find out my thoughts after spending a couple of hours with the game.<br /><br />
 </div>

The US box art for the upcoming PSP <em>Star Ocean</em> remakes are surprisingly void of anime characters. Instead, Square Enix USA has opted to go for something a bit more subtle: cracking the world in half. Like those friendship rings of yesteryear, buying both <em>First Departure</em> and <em>Second Evolution</em> and putting them together creates a whole image. As the <a href="http://member.square-enix.com/na/blog/2008/09/star-ocean-box-art.php">Square Enix blog</a> says, "How can you own one and not the other?"<br /><br />[Thanks. T.J. Back at E3, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean"><em>Star Ocean: First Departure</em></a> and <em>Star Ocean: Second Evolution</em> were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/star-ocean-officially-set-for-us-release-coming-october/">both announced</a> for North America. Since then, our European readers may have wondered if the titles would see release across the Atlantic. Luckily, <em>Star Ocean</em> actually <em>will</em> be crossing ... an ocean into Europe and releasing this October. However, only <em>First Departure</em> has been announced with a wide open October date. North Americans should still look out for October 21, 2008 for <em>SO1</em> <strike>both titles</strike> and January 6, 2009 for <em>SO2</em>.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/star-ocean-announced-for-europe/">Star Ocean announced for Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 19:00:00 EST. So we posted a trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/star-ocean/"><em>Star Ocean: First Departure</em></a> the other day, and today we have the very first screenshots of the English version of the game. It's not a huge gallery brimming to the top with screenies, but it's better than nothing. We've got four pics: two showing off that nice widescreen format in battle and the other two are from the fully-voiced anime cut scenes.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/star-oceans-first-english-screenshots-depart/">Star Ocean's first English screenshots depart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 21:30:00 EST. After tons of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/star-ocean-discovered-in-gamecrazy-system-for-november-release/">retailer leaks</a>, it looks like Square Enix has finally announced <em>Star Ocean</em> is coming to the US. The first PSP game, <em>The First Departure</em> will be available for the US market on October 21st. <em>The Second Evolution</em> will be available on January 6th.<br /><br />While we're glad to see this news, it's a little disparaging to note that for PSP fans, this is all Square Enix will have to show at E3. Other high profile PSP releases, like <em>Dissidia</em> and <em>Kingdom Hearts</em>, will not be making an appearance at the show. Guess we're going to have to wait until Tokyo Game Show to get our hands on Square's other titles.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/star-ocean-officially-set-for-us-release-coming-october/">Star Ocean officially set for US release, coming October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 15:00:00 EST. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008/">2008's edition of E3</a> just days away, the role-playing steam engine that is Square Enix has revealed what titles that it will spring on press types as they shuffle past. Of the eleven titles on display, the company's lineup this year is noticeably remake and sequel heavy, with over half of the games representing a return to the well for another drink. Boasting "simultaneous global releases for several platforms," the company has also re-confirmed dates for much of its lineup as well, with the following games also noted as being playable during the show:<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/chrono-trigger"><em><br /></em></a>

Square Enix's PSP <em>Star Ocean</em> games should be hitting the States this November, if this listing from a GameCrazy store is to be believed. The RPG remakes will retail for $39.99 each. Square Enix has yet to officially announce a localized version of the game, but with this new evidence (and the listing found on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/star-ocean-makes-an-apperance-on-gamefly/">GameFly</a>), it's clear that the games are coming to the US.<br /><br />[Thanks, Chibi-L!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/star-ocean-discovered-in-gamecrazy-system-for-november-release/">Star Ocean discovered in GameCrazy system, for November release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jun 2008 00:30:00 EST. <p> Fans of Square Enix RPGs may have assumed PS3 was the safe bet this generation of consoles. However, during a press conference in Japan today, the famed RPG maker announced its plans to support Xbox 360, with at least one exclusive, and two timed exclusives for Microsoft's current generation platform.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean-4/"><em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em></a>, the fourth iteration of the popular RPG series, has been announced for Xbox 360 only. The <a href="http://www.eternalsphere.com/so4/index.html">official website</a> makes it clear that the game will be a 360 title, but plans for a PS3 version haven't been completely ruled out yet. "We cannot announce anything on that. We can say that it will be released first [on the Xbox 360]. Whether we'll release it on the PS3 is undecided. We may release it, we may not." [<a href="http://www.starocean4.org/news/star-ocean-the-last-hope-announced-for-xbox-360.html">Source</a>]<br /><br />Another Square Enix game, <em>The Last Remnant</em>, will be multiplatform. However, the game will debut on Xbox 360 first this year, with a PS3 version to come some time after, perhaps next year. This continues Microsoft's aggressive push to secure the Japanese RPG market, with Square Enix's <em>Infinite Undiscovery</em> being an Xbox 360 exclusive as well. PS3 fans need not fret too much, because at the very least, the <em>Final Fantasy XIII</em> games are still exclusive on PS3. For now.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/star-ocean-the-last-hope-announced-for-xbox-360/">Joystiq</a>]</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/star-ocean-4-currently-xbox-exclusive-last-remnant-delayed-on-p/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Ocean 4 currently Xbox exclusive, Last Remnant delayed on PS3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/star-ocean-4-currently-xbox-exclusive-last-remnant-delayed-on-p/">Star Ocean 4 currently Xbox exclusive, Last Remnant delayed on PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 08:15:00 EST. This in mind, we can safely say the new RPG will be multi-platform (to be clear, Star Ocean going multiplatform is our uneducated guess, not a confirmation).<br /><br />Combining the West's love of space marines and the East's love of effeminate heroes, Square Enix and Tri Ace have announced that<em> Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> will hit the Xbox 360 in 2009. The fourth in the popular Japanese role-playing series,<em> Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> marks Microsoft's latest attempt to make a splash in the Japanese gaming market.<br /><br />Taking its heroes from a dying Earth and into deep space, <em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> is the first established series brought to the Xbox 360 from popular publisher <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a> since it introduced gamers to a ... somewhat ... hi-res edition of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xi">Final Fantasy XI</a></em>. Are role-playing games the last hope for a struggling Xbox 360 in Japan? It's not really a question so much as a trite joke we'll be abusing over the next several months, as Square Enix and Microsoft have announced a new endeavor that's actually called, "The Last Hope." Oh, and those words are preceded by ones that may excite you: "Star Ocean." Now we know what all that "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/oh-btw-square-enix-has-lineup-of-xbox-360-titles/">lineup</a>" business was about.<br /><br />According to <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/880/880407p1.html">IGN's liveblog</a> of the announcement, made yesterday at a press conference in Japan, <em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> has a "science fiction feel to it," with humanity heading into the universe after completely wrecking planet Earth, as usual. Important things like customization and battle systems were apparently not mentioned, but there's plenty of time for that yet. For now, <em>Star Ocean: The Last Hope</em> is slated "for Xbox 360," but common sense tells us if a PlayStation 3 version is in the works (and funnily enough, this game looks <em>just</em> like the PS3's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/star-ocean-iv-trailer-comes-courtesy-star-ocean-psp-disc/"><em>Star Ocean IV</em></a>"), it probably wouldn't be trumpeted at a Microsoft conference. <br /><br />[Trailer via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/06/10/star-ocean-the-last-hope-announcement-trailer/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/star-ocean-the-last-hope-announced-for-xbox-360/">'Star Ocean: The Last Hope' announced for Xbox 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 05:30:00 EST. Square Enix's PSP remake of <em>Star Ocean</em> may finally be getting a US release. At least, if this information on <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/products/detail.asp?pid=131485&amp;t=0&amp;fcTrack=Search?-?-">GameFly</a> is to be believed. The popular online rental site lists a September 30th date for the game. Most likely, this is simply a placeholder.<br /><br />It's not a question of if, but when, Square Enix will officially announce a US release for the <em>Star Ocean</em> remakes. With many finishing <em>Crisis Core</em>, tons of PSP fans are awaiting their next RPG adventure.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/04/28/star-ocean-remakes-landing-on-north-american-psps/">Siliconera</a>; Thanks, Joe!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/star-ocean-makes-an-apperance-on-gamefly/">Star Ocean makes an apperance on GameFly</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 12:30:00 EST. Under the "check" section you can sample six songs from the game and even fade between two songs via the slider on the webpage. Not sure why you'd really care enough to do that, but it can be strangely intriguing to listen to two songs at once. The soundtrack goes on sale May 2nd in Japan, with an album of arranged music tracks to follow on the 21st.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/listen-in-on-star-ocean-second-evolutions-sountrack/">Listen in on Star Ocean: Second Evolution's sountrack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 07:00:00 EST. <p>Square Enix hasn't revealed any information about a US localization of <em>Star Ocean</em>. That's too bad -- we're hankering for a new PSP RPG. <em>The Second Evolution</em> is the second PSP-exclusive remake released in Japan so far, and this is the opening cinematic from the game. The production values, as expected from a Square Enix title, look pretty fantastic.</p>

If you've watched the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean-4/"><em>Star Ocean 4</em></a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/star-ocean-4-trailer-feature-space-opera-battles-galore/">trailer</a> posted last Monday, perhaps you were a little annoyed seeing the main characters' faces purposefully cropped out of the picture. If that's the case, then be happy for today's Famitsu scans; they are equally pretty and most of all crop-free. The scans reveal character artwork for protagonists Edge Maverick and Reimi Saionji. <br /><br />Aside from that, however, nothing else major has been revealed about this <em>Star Ocean</em> prequel. We do get a brief look at the in-game graphics though. As far as we can tell, the game is shaping up nicely. <em>The Second Evolution</em> has just gone on sale in Japan, and Square Enix is celebrating the release of this new PSP-exclusive remake by making new themes and wallpapers available on their <a href="http://www.eternalsphere.com/so2/index.html">official website</a> (click on "Special"). Initial impressions from Tokyo's Akihabara suggest that the game has done rather well in its first week: finding a new copy proved difficult, due to eager early demand.<br /><br />With <em>Monster Hunter</em> and <em>Star Ocean</em>, we expect the Japanese metro system to be filled with PSP players.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.psphyper.com/psp/star-ocean-2-themes-wallpapers/">PSPHyper</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/02/download-new-star-ocean-themes/">Download new Star Ocean themes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 10:20:00 EST. None of their titles outside of <em>Valkyrie Profile</em> have really gained cult status, and none have really broken the barrier between them and the mainstream market. Really, <em>Radiata Stories</em> was brilliant, but only for the few people with the perseverance to play it -- or those with a printed FAQ at their side. Anyway, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iraCEDfJoXI">this is the trailer</a> for <em>Star Ocean 4</em> that came on a DVD with Japanese pre-orders of the PSP remakes of the first and second titles.The audio sounds a little messed up, as a warning. It looks interesting, though gameplay footage is still nonexistent, as is a console announcement. Perhaps Tri-ace will use this game to break into a wider market. Perhaps not. Japan, as usual, is getting even more extra goodies with the upcoming release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-ocean/"><em>Star Ocean: Second Evolution</em></a> on the PSP. Game peripheral company Hori will be coming out with a new set of <em>Star Ocean: Second Evolution</em> themed <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bh-49-en-70-2iyy.html">accessories</a>. The set consists of: headphones with a <em>Star Ocean</em> art design, screen cleaner, two UMD cases (one for<em> SO1</em> and <em>SO2</em> each), and a slip-on back-casing. It's actually a pretty nice collection to go along with that special <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/02/star-ocean-limited-edition-psp-system-revealed/"><em>First Departure</em> PSP</a>.<br /><br />While our friends over seas can enjoy their soon-to-release game and complementary accessories, the rest of us will just have to settle for a brand new trailer. By all means, it's not a lousy consolation prize ... and hey, it's free! Check out the trailer right after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.rpgland.com/content/?p=4104">RPG Land</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/star-ocean-2-accessories-for-japan-new-trailer-for-you/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Ocean 2 accessories for Japan, new trailer for you</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/star-ocean-2-accessories-for-japan-new-trailer-for-you/">Star Ocean 2 accessories for Japan, new trailer for you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 11:30:00 EST.
