So, with that in mind, let's take a look at Sony's ridiculously named PlayStation 3 tablet controller patent.

The device Sony refers to as an "EyePad" in its patent application, seen in the sketch above, would theoretically come equipped with the usual trappings you'd expect from a PS3 controller: D-Pad, buttons, analog stick, SIXAXIS motion sensors, etc. The more interesting bits, however, are a bit harder to pick out from the drawing.

First of all, those shaded stripes on the edge are not a creamy nougat center, as we had originally surmised, but rather illuminated strips of LEDs or comparable light source. This would allow the EyePad, in conjunction with an EyeToy camera, to function as a PlayStation Move controller.

Secondly, those dots on either corner of the apparent display (which could actually be a normal display, touchscreen or Vita-esque touchpad, according to the filing) are paired stereoscopic cameras. The cameras are arranged in such as way that their respective fields of vision provide a full, 360-degree view of any object placed onto the surface of the EyePad's screen, allowing for objects to be fully scanned in three dimensions and then rendered in game. Theoretically the player could also place their face within this field, allowing for face mapping in character customization applications, for instance.

Again, we doubt this patent represents anything more than a combination of day-dreaming and butt-covering on the parts of Sony's engineers and legal department, respectively, but the ideas presented here are definitely interesting.
Sony patents 'Eyepad,' a Move-enabled PS3 tablet controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Feb 2013 13:30:00 EST. Developer Palmer Luckey is now looking for funding via Kickstarter. "The reason we're using Kickstarter is so that we can get these dev kits into the hands of developers as fast as possible," Luckey says in the pitch video above. "That way they can try it for themselves and start integrating support into their games and engines."

The crowd-funding route has worked already, with the project securing more than double its $250,000 goal as of this writing. Limited prototype dev units - at $275 each - have all been claimed, leaving the $300 level as the cheapest route to get your hands on the hardware, which includes a copy of the upcoming, Rift-enabled revamp, Doom 3 BFG. In a related endorsement, id Software's John Carmack called the device "the best VR demo probably the world has ever seen."

That price is likely higher than what consumers will eventually pay for everything once the software is optimized and the design is finalized. The dev kits are set to be shipped out in December, so we could see a final product as soon as next year.

Oculus virtual reality headset looking for funding on Kickstarter originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 21:00:00 EST. In a recent study conducted by Insight Media titled the "Stereoscopic 3D Gaming Report," researchers concluded that the install base of 3D-ready televisions will rise to "over 40 million" by 2014. MCV reports that the $5,000 study's results are based on the statistical outperformance of 3D film over 2D equivalents, as well as "extensive testing of the first generation of 3D games."

"We spoke directly with gamers, game developers, and game publishers ... to build a complete picture of the future of gaming," lead analyst Dale Maunu said of the testing. In fairness, when we last saw 3D technology in games, it kind of blew our minds, so we'd like to trust Mr. Maunu -- that being said, we're still paying off these HDTVs. Give us some time, The Future! Come on!
Report: 40 million homes will have 3D televisions by 2014 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 15:50:00 EST.
The software allows Banamco not only to render visuals in RealD's stereoscopic 3D format, but also to implement automatic camera movements for optimal 3D viewing, and head tracking with a camera peripheral. The software will be used in the development of "upcoming as yet unannounced NAMCO BANDAI Games titles," allowing us to continue thinking of things for the developer to make 3D. You may have seen the report on Engadget stating that, according to a Sony rep, all PS3 games will run in 3-D with a software update next year. We contacted Sony ourselves to learn more about what sounded like a major megaton to let slip at a trade show. Sony told us that the company is "conducting a technological investigation" of whether it's even possible to do that. As for specifics: "there is no plan for the market launch of this at this time."

If you're dying to look at a 3-D game right now, Engadget also captured a video of Wipeout HD being played in 3-D, which you can see above. For some reason, the 3-D effect doesn't come through when viewed in an embedded video recording -- even with the glasses in front of the lens. Sony really needs to work on that.
Sony: No plan to launch 3-D support for all PS3 games originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Sep 2009 20:00:00 EST. This is one of those utilitarian posts where there's not a whole lot more information to impart to you after you've read the headline. Resident Evil 5. PC. Sept. 15. Fin.

OK, well, we guess we could tell you that you can run the PC version in stereoscopic 3D with GeForce 3D Vision glasses. There are also new costumes and an improved mercenaries mode with three times as many not-zombies to murder.

See, that other stuff was barely enough for a paragraph. However, this has now become a not inconsiderable block of text, and we feel perfectly comfortable moving on, confident that you, the reader, have gotten your money's worth. Good day.
Resident Evil 5 shambles onto PC Sept. 15 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 15:30:00 EST. When we first discussed kung-fu action game Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao, we were so unnerved by the lack of any actual, on-screen tigers that we couldn't bring ourselves to report much actual info about it. Now, we've got some more details courtesy of Eurogamer, including a price (1200 MS points/$15) and a release window (sometime this August).

If you're having trouble placing Invincible Tiger, you might remember it's presented in stereoscopic 3D, if you've got a TV that works with that sort of thing ... which you probably don't. Trust us.

Gallery: Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao

Invincible Tiger coming in August to XBLA, PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 10:53:00 EST. "But all my games are already in 3D!" you exclaim, quick to accuse Joystiq of being "bias" and desperate to downplay the PlayStation 3's magnificent graphical capabilities. Rest assured, dear reader, that this post concerns real three dee, the kind that leaps off the screen and subtly mocks you for donning a pair of silly, silly glasses.

Ars Technica had a brief glimpse at some new 3D technology on display at Sony's CES booth and came away impressed. Though a Sony representative remained mum on specifications and insisted that it was merely "a look at what 3D could look like if Sony decided to move in this direction," the effect on PlayStation 3 games proved most enticing. After peering through "a dorky set of black glasses" at Wipeout HD, post author Ben Kuchera noted, "I was ready to whip out my credit card right there."

Late last year, a stereoscopic 3D Certification and Advocacy group claimed that Sony was fully intending to support 3D stereoscope technology, in both movies and games, in 2009. In the interest of embracing as many dimensions as possible, we sincerely hope the CES showing manages to draw out a few more credit cards. (But not from tech journalists -- those are usually maxed out.)
CES 2009: Sony shows off 3D display tech with PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 15:14:00 EST. Think about this for a moment. Preparation for an evening long session of Halo 3 could have included snacks, beverages, console, game disc and a stereoscopic 3D display. According to a July 3 interview with GamesIndustry.biz, XNA's general manager, Chris Satchell, said Microsoft considered the tech for console gaming.

In an excerpt from the interview, Satchell revealed that Microsoft actually looked into using stereoscopic technology (seen in the upcoming Ubisoft game Avatar and Texas Instruments' upcoming DualView TV) for gaming. Ultimately it was determined the need for special glasses made the idea impractical. "I think it is hard to be mainstream with asking people to wear headgear to play games," he said. We'd prefer the headgear above, thank you.

While technology is being developed to overcome some original obstacles for stereoscopic displays, Satchell believes the possibility of the tech is, "very interesting." As Joystiq pointed out, we're officially one step closer to the "Holodeck," people! Awesome?

[via Joystiq]
MS considered 3D tech for Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 06 Jul 2008 19:30:00 EST.
