You know how old-timers always talk about how it was better in their day? Well, if their day was the early nineties, then for once they're right. This clip from 1993's City Hunter starring Jackie Chan (we guess he's a cop prowling the streets for law-breaking skyscrapers?) takes us back to a magical time of innocence, before Chan became the superstar he is today -- back to when he was a lesser star in Hong Kong cinema and had no qualms with playing dress up as Street Fighter II characters like Chun-Li and E. Honda in one of the craziest things we've ever seen. Head past the break to have your mind blown by something that Capcom actually approved!
One is a fighting game with a superior version already on the service, while the other is a pretty good Factor 5 joint for the SNES. If you fancy yourself an Indy fan (not that kinda Indy), then you'll definitely want to check out the video above.

Actually, you should probably just watch it anyway. You know, just to be safe.

Surprisingly, it didn't take Nintendo that long to flip the switch for North America, considering the company revealed the long-overdue feature -- and day-one annoyance -- only earlier this month. And on top of the free trial versions of select WiiWare titles (five total this week!), there are also two new Virtual Console titles to enjoy, as well as three new DSiWare games. Hit the break for the full list.
Continue reading NintendoWare Weekly: WiiWare demos, Pokemon Rumble, Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures

NintendoWare Weekly: WiiWare demos, Pokemon Rumble, Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 11:30:00 EST. Although we were briefly confused by what we thought was supposed to be Gitaroo-Man -- until we realized it was Gitaroo-Man's "Legendary Theme" being played in Guitar Hero.

Now we can only hope that someone runs with the idea and delivers some playable versions of these games. HD is played out -- we're ready for Sub-Standard Definition.
Continue reading A megamix of minimalist game remakes

A megamix of minimalist game remakes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 03:00:00 EST. It may not get the media attention of PSN titles like Flower or the PixelJunk games, but ZEN Pinball is one of the most successful PSN games around. To capitalize on its success, ZEN Studios is planning a number of DLC tables for the game. First up is ZEN Pinball: Street Fighter II, a PS3 interpretation of the Street Fighter II table from Pinball FX on XBLA. "Here at ZEN Studios, we are long time Street Fighter fans and have a great relationship with Capcom, so the idea came naturally," ZEN Studios' managing director Zsolt Kigyossy told us in an exclusive interview.

You see them every day on the streets, or on Kotaku, but we've learned to turn a blind eye to them. "Oh sure," you think, "Zangief statuettes are sad, but surely someone else will take them in. Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?" But look at what that cycle of neglect has done to the poor things. You're killing them.

In the last quarter of this year, you'll finally be able to stop the cycle, when PopCultureShock allows you to put a roof over the head of one of these lost souls. For just $375, you can have Street Fighter II-era Zangief glowering at you for the rest of your natural life, and can you really put a price on that? Well, besides $375, obviously.

This video dropped earlier this month, so we offer our humblest apologies if you've already seen it -- actually, scratch that. You could do with seeing it again. Watching a single man go all Ong-Bak on an unsuspecting sedan is damn near the most inspirational thing we've ever seen. Oh, and it closely resembles the bonus stage from Street Fighter II, which is why its relevant for our gaming-centric news establishment. Oh, and it features a song by Rage Against The Machine, which we understand is quite the popular band with the kids nowadays.

The reverse vehicular manslaughter demonstration is posted after the jump.
Continue reading Iron-fisted man recreates Street Fighter bonus stage

Iron-fisted man recreates Street Fighter bonus stage originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 13:15:00 EST. In what will assuredly be the longest headline for any Xbox Live Deal of the Week post we'll ever run, Microsoft's offering a $5 reduction in price (from 1200 to 800) on Capcom's Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix this week.

That's right, folks -- you're reading this correctly. We're on the second week straight that the Xbox Live Deal of the Week was something worthwhile and not, say, DLC from a three year old game or, erm, DLC from a two year old game. We're not quite sure that the big M and Xbox Live are giving Steam a run for its money with deals quite yet, but we are plopping down our virtual bucks that much more frequently on the service as of late. Here's hoping that we'll keep seeing tasty deals like this rather than some of the ... ahem ... less than savory items we've seen in the past.
XBLM Deal of the Week: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 15:45:00 EST. Capcom's marketing machine sure did a number on us. If you need proof, just look at how terrible Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix looks in this video (after the jump)! Wasn't it supposed to be über sexy? Oh, wait. We've just been informed that this isn't HD Remix, but a deconstruction of the SNES version of Street Fighter II. Our collective bad.

Using various programs -- including one horrendously named "Tile Molester" -- Rom hacker/bender Dylan Hayes has reduced SFII to nothing more than hit boxes, a few birdies and one giant fish. By breaking the classic down, Hayes shows off the game in its most basic -- yet, still completely playable -- form.

Capcom, it looks like we just spotted your big E3 XBLA announcement: Street Fighter II Blocky Mess Remix.

[Via Offworld]
Continue reading Deconstructing Street Fighter II

Deconstructing Street Fighter II originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 May 2009 06:00:00 EST. Looks like your 2D hadouken skills won't be (virtually) rewarded. Capcom's not planning on patching Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix any time soon. In fact, Capcom's John Diamonon told PlayStation.Blog readers that "trophies were never promised for SFHD and aren't going to be implemented."

Well, looks like we're crossing that off our Trophy Portal. Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, according to associate product manager John Diamonon, has sold in excess of 250,000 copies and is "on its way to becoming the highest grossing digital title ever." Diamonon states that the game has already broken both day one and week one records -- the game debuted November 25 and 26 on PSN and XBLA, respectively -- and he adds that the game is likely to best the 30 day record as well. Diamonon proceeds to thank everyone involved, stating that the game was "a labor of love for everyone involved" and then thanks the fans themselves for keeping the title "relevant" for well over a decade.

There's a lesson here, kids. Nostalgia sells, but high definition nostalgia really sells.
Street Fighter II HD breaks records, over 250K sold originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Dec 2008 17:00:00 EST.
Why is Ryu showing us his pearly whites and giving us a thumbs up? That's because Capcom has just announced they have sold an impressive 250,000 copies of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A breakdown of the sales numbers between the two consoles was not released. The game was released on November 25th, so it hasn't even been a month since its debut. According to Capcom, it also broke both day one and week one sales records, and it will "most likely" go on to break the 30-days sales record as well. It might even become the highest grossing digital title ever.

What did you expect? Capcom took an old-school favorite, improved upon it, and unleashed it onto all the SF fanboys. Street Fighter forever!

Remember Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix? Remember how it was supposed to come out this summer? Yeah, guess that didn't happen. The team at Capcom and Udon Comics have been working very hard in tweaking the game, making sure the visuals are smoother than ever. Check out this new trailer, which takes the "retro vibe" that Capcom's going for, and punches you in the face with it.

According to a post thread by Capcom forum moderator Christian Svensson, Super Street Fighter II Turbor HD Remix has already been submitted to Sony (to Microsoft too, for that matter) for approval. Their target release month is November, which means the game could potentially come out in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, Svensson wasn't able to provide any information regarding whether or not the PSN and XBLA versions will be released simultaneously. Finally, we have even more new screenshots of the game for you in the gallery below.

Come on, Capcom and Sony, bring the game out already!

[Via MaxConsole]

Street Fighter II HD submitted to Sony, target release date is this month originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 17:05:00 EST. An e-mail from Capcom's Tim Ng starts with this: "Do you remember Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix? You know that game we announced in April 2007." Yes, Tim. We do remember that game. We also remember that it hasn't been released yet.

"Well, it's actually on its way to XBLA and PSN very soon," the e-mail continues. O RLY? The oft-delayed high definition remake of the classic 2D fighter has quietly slipped off the radar. However, it may be planning a stealth release soon. Perhaps Capcom realized that this shouldn't ship so close to the next real SF game: Street Fighter IV.

New screenshots in our gallery below:

Street Fighter II HD promised 'soon,' new screens released originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 09:30:00 EST. Now, now, before you guys get all up in arms about any possible changes that are coming to the HD remake of Super Street Fighter II Turbo, hear us out. Apparently, Capcom will be applying changes to each of your favorite characters in hopes of rebalancing the gameplay. Just be aware these <strike>desecrations</strike> rebalances are optional and you can feel free to switch back to original mode if you don't like them.

Looking at the list, Ryu has one change: a fake Hadoken has been added to his arsenal. Other characters have over ten changes -- all of them are after the jump. Lastly, if you are having trouble comprehending the list, you are probably not hardcore enough to care what these changes are anyway.
Continue reading List of changes coming to Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

List of changes coming to Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 13:30:00 EST.
PS3 fans haven't heard any news in regards to Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix in a long, long time. Xbox 360 owners had a chance to participate in the beta, but it was plagued with problems that were never fixed, if that makes you feel any better. The lack of news has lead some to conclude the game has been delayed; but fear not, in an interview with The Street Fighter Blog, associate producer Rey Jimenez reveals the game is on track for a 2008 release. "We're on track to release the game this year and barring any unforeseen catastrophic event, that should not be changing." He also told SF fans to expect an announcement of the exact release date shortly.

Other elements covered in the interview range from the possibility extra characters via DLC (not happening) to whether the fighters will have their original colors selectable (yes, they will be). The entire interview can be read here.

[Via Capcom Digital]

First, obviously, is the fact that Rockman is a great game, if a bit ... super hard (even harder than most other Rockman games, and even with only six Robot Masters).

Second is that it marks the passage of time nicely: one Mega Man game on the way to 9. First this, then 2, then 9!

We don't know the first thing about Blood Gear, but it also looks pretty cool! Also, we can't even believe it, but EGGY came out!
Just in case you've completely forgotten why you really bought Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 on Xbox Live Arcade in the first place, allow us to jog your memory: the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta begins today. To access the beta, owners of Commando 3 should select the "SFII HD Remix Beta" option from the game's main menu, which will take them to a blade where they confirm the download. The SSFIITHDR beta will reside in the demo section of the games blade.

The beta will give players the option of using only Ken or Ryu in various online modes or in local two-player matches. Remember, this is a beta, so the actual purpose of it is to stress-test the network code for the multiplayer modes of the game. The beta will run until around August 20 or whenever Capcom decides to pull the plug. Don't worry, you'll probably get bored of Ken and Ryu by then.
Super Street Fighter II XBLA beta begins today originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 01:00:00 EST. Brawl spoilers (warning: spoiler link contains spoilers) I got nostalgic about classic fighting game spoilers. You know, as happens in this little corner of the website. I love fighting game spoilers. I love spoilers in general, preferring the buildup of anticipation to a "surprise" to the actual feeling of surprise, but fighting game spoilers are especially delightful, for the simple reason that nothing in a fighting game's storyline matters. Also, fighting game storylines are usually incredibly hilarious, whether this is intentional or not.

Street Fighter II is the canonical fighting game, and appropriately has the best goofy ending animations in the genre. If you haven't played this seventeen-year-old game, you should be warned: the above YouTube link contains spoilers that will blow the whole game wide open. If you are sensitive about such things, you should go through the game yourself to learn the motivations that drew eight people to fly around the world and punch each other in one-minute intervals.

But if you live in 2008 and have already finished Street Fighter II, then revel in some ending videos with us! Now it's time to celebrate in our appropriate fashion.
The VC Advantage: Street Spoiler II originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Jan 2008 21:00:00 EST.
The internet has made it easy to find cheats for games, but we miss the tips pages from game magazines, when the discovery of a new code could inspire you to go back to an old game. These codes aren't exactly new, but oldness is the essence of the Virtual Console! We're bringing back the classic codes every week on The VC Advantage.

Immediately following the release of Street Fighter II for the SNES, my dad was out delivering mail when he saw a blurb on some game magazine's cover about a secret SF2 code. He cracked open the magazine (which was either on a magazine stand in a store he delivered to, or was part of a delivery to a residence -- either way, he didn't buy it and it was slightly rogue of him) and transcribed the code. When he got back to the post office after his route, he called me (which happened quite rarely from work) to tell me of his discovery. Expecting to unlock some aspect of Champion Edition, I found that "DRULYB" unlocked the ability to play as the same character in two-player games. Surprisingly, I didn't mind not being able to play as M. Bison.
Continue reading The VC Advantage: Down, R, Up, L, Y, B

The VC Advantage: Down, R, Up, L, Y, B originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 20:45:00 EST.
