Developer Backbone Entertainment planned to produce new entries in multiple classic Sega franchises, as evidenced in a gallery of images posted online by former Backbone artist Arvin Bautista.

Bautista's art showcases characters from Sega's Streets of Rage beat-'em-up series, along with a mockup screenshot from a proposed remake of ESWAT, a side-scrolling action game that premiered in arcades in 1989. The games were pitched as downloadable titles for Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, though neither was officially announced. It's unknown if either game is currently in development.

Despite its Genesis-era popularity, the Streets of Rage series stumbled when it came time to transition to later consoles. A Dreamcast sequel was cancelled early in development, and though Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games pitched a downloadable Streets of Rage remake for current-gen consoles, a release never materialized.

Adding to the bodycount, Bionic Commando Rearmed developer GRIN was rumored to be working on its own Streets of Rage game prior to its closure in 2009. Sega itself hasn't forgotten the series, producing last year's Sega Vintage Collection: Streets of Rage compilation for Xbox Live Arcade as a reminder, but at this point, you'd be forgiven for thinking that these streets are cursed.
Backbone-developed Streets of Rage, ESWAT pitch art surfaces originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 May 2013 07:00:00 EST. Uploaded to Vimeo by one "Huff Allium," the footage shows off some familiar, rage-filled streets, now rendered in 3D.

It's not clear whether this is actual gameplay footage or something pre-rendered. Either way, it looks significantly different from the Streets of Rage that Sega fans remember, ditching the cartoonish style favored by later Streets of Rage games for something grittier. No rollerblading kids, robot grandpas or boxing kangaroos here.

Sean Noonan, former level designer for Ruffian (now working on Watch Dogs for Ubisoft), mentioned the footage on Twitter, writing, "So it seems like one of my previous projects has leaked, as pretty as I remember."

Just over a year ago, it was rumored that Ruffian was developing a multiplatform game, referred to as "a major contract with one of the biggest publishers in the industry." Recreating one of Sega's most well-remembered franchises would certainly fit the description, and the publisher hasn't been shy about resurrecting its old franchises in recent months. We've contacted Ruffian to confirm the project's existence, and to learn whether or not it's still in the works.
Footage of Ruffian's Streets of Rage leaks out originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 11:30:00 EST. The anonymous party went on to identify two projects that were in the works before the closure: an update of Capcom's Strider and a Streets of Rage game.

The Strider game had 3D models and concept art, and even a teaser video -- which you can see above. Capcom canceled the project, and GRIN kept working on it, with the intention of changing out the IP. It was only after the failure to get this game picked up that the studio went ahead with Streets of Rage, of which we have yet to see any media.
Rumor: Grin Barcelona worked on Strider, Streets of Rage games originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 11:30:00 EST. Are you still heartbroken about the recent evisceration of the massively expanded, eight-years-in-the-making, PC freeware remake of Streets of Rage? Sega's got something of a consolation prize for you, provided you're in possession of an iPhone or iPod Touch: Streets of Rage 2 is now available on the App Store for $2.99.

Sure, it's not as ridiculously bolstered with new features as the obliterated remake, however, it does feature Bluetooth multiplayer functionality, as well as the original Japanese version of the game (titled Bare Knuckle II). Also, it has the distinct advantage of being an actual thing released by Sega, making the probability of it being blinked out of existence by Sega very, very slim.
Streets of Rage 2 now on iOS App Store for $2.99 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 20:30:00 EST. A week ago, we advised you to download Streets of Rage Remake as soon as possible. Over the weekend, developer Bomber Games removed the download for the expansive PC tribute, apparently at Sega's request, proving that we have incredible powers of foresight.

All download links have been removed from the website and forum, with moderator charco saying that "

SEGA have contacted regarding the download hosted on this site," asking users not to upload the file elsewhere, and stating that the team won't discuss the issue further on the forums.

According to "Bomberlink," the team did attempt to square the game with Sega's legal department last year, well in advance of the release -- though it doesn't appear to have helped. We've put an inquiry in with Sega to find out the current status of the game. Will it be back on the streets, or should we begin raging now?
Streets of Rage Remake taken down originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 19:00:00 EST. Developer Bomber Games started working on a game called Streets of Rage Remake in 2003, and only this week released the final version of the freeware PC game. We can only assume that Sega didn't take eight years working on the original Streets of Rage, so where did the time go in this project?

Well, it's less a "remake" and more of a hugely expanded, mostly new game. Remake, built entirely using new code, contains 103 stages, and all the playable characters from Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3 (with new abilities), along with new characters. New enemies based on the Game Gear games and cover illustrations have been added to the lineup of punching bags. Boss Rush, Volleyball, AI partner mode, and other extras are also thrown in. Oh, and there's a level editor.
Sega is temporarily dropping prices of its iPhone games in honor of kids going back to school. You know, it's been a long time since our GameBoy Advance was confiscated for illicit Pokémon Fire Red playing, but we're pretty sure you're still not allowed to play games during class. Oh well -- it's the thought that counts, Sega!

Additionally, Phantasy Star 2 launched today on the App Store with a sale price of $2.99 (normally $4.99). See the complete Sega sale details after the break.
Continue reading Phantasy Star 2 released for iPhone; other Sega games on sale

Phantasy Star 2 released for iPhone; other Sega games on sale originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 20:30:00 EST. Offers on each platform have a different start date and a different duration.

The PSN sales will be active today through Tuesday, July 6, and include the PSP Sonic Rivals games ($10.99 or $13.99 for 1 or 2, respectively, or $17.99 for both) and discounted DLC for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic the Hedgehog.

iPhone sales run tomorrow through June 30, and include discounts on the iPhone's Genesis games (Streets of Rage and Golden Axe are at the magic 99-cent price at which they start to seem like a good idea) along with Super Monkey Ball ($2.99) and the iPad's Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Edition ($4.99).

Finally, the XBLA sale will begin -- and end -- Thursday, June 24. If you want to buy any of the Genesis Sonic games for $3 each, you'd best have your Microsoft Points ready that day.

Sega and Nintendo have teamed up to offer players a few holiday VC deals, announcing on Sega's UK blog that select Virtual Console titles will be discounted for a limited time. From December 24, 2009, until January 6, 2010, select titles will be reduced to 500 Wii Points each from down from 800 Wii Points.

Titles getting the 40% off treatment include such Genesis classics as ToeJam & Earl, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Gunstar Heroes, Puyo Puyo 2, Golden Axe, Shining Force and Streets of Rage. Also, for the lump of coal types, Sega has discounted the "admit it, it stinks" brawler, Altered Beast. It's a great offer for new Wii owners, or those looking to relive their lost youth.
Sega discounting select Virtual Console titles for the holidays originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 19:15:00 EST. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Genesis, Sega is asking you, The Internet, to pick the next Genesis game to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade. It doesn't look like an easy choice either, as the list of candidates has some of the console's best games. All told, you can cast your vote for:

Earthworm Jim

Streets of Rage

Golden Axe II

Toejam & Earl

Shining Force

Revenge of Shinobi

Wonderboy in Monster World

Sega is accepting votes until August 21, so head over to genesispoll.com and vote. We'd be remiss not to mention that all of these games are available on Virtual Console already, but XBLA is guaranteed to add a few extra features, like game saving, Achievements and online multiplayer. Keep that in mind when casting your vote.
Sega wants your vote for the next Genesis XBLA game originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. Sega today announced intentions to bring Streets of Rage to the iPhone. When's it coming out you ask? How's about right now! That's right, folks. Because of Apple's policy on speaking about iPhone apps/games before release, Sega simultaneously announced the game's existence with its release.

Unfortunately, our friends at Touch Arcade were none too impressed with Sega's port, saying the game suffers from tremendous slow down and renders the game "unplayable on the 3GS." Oh no! We're too busy spending our time with Drop7 to play anything else on the iPhone, so how about you tell us, Joystiq Biomass[TM]. Anyone drop the $4.99 for Streets of Rage today and encounter any problems?
Sega brings emulated Streets of Rage to the iPhone originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 18 Jul 2009 00:00:00 EST. Fresh off his success placing fourth in Neoflash's Spring Coding Competition, homebrew developer Multiple: Option has followed up his Game Melody Oratorio software with a second volume, packing ten songs and new features into the virtual piano update.

Here's your chance to learn classic melodies from a diverse set of games:

Double Dragon

Dr. Mario

Duck Tales (a woo woo)

Final Fantasy VII

Game Melody Oratorio Volume 2's new features include an extra piano key (C3), a new Practice Stage with hidden notes, a new Recital Challenge mode, improved flashcart support, and the ability to preview melodies on the song selection screen. "Yeah, I'm going to fight some puzzles or whatever."

No matter how it went down, we're happy to see Streets of Rage 2, making an unheralded entrance onto the Xbox Live Arcade today. We find it hard to imagine two more disparate takes on fighting than Streets and today's other release, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Today's offerings are more of a personality test than anything. Do you want to battle opponents with your mind and spatial reasoning, or would you prefer furious punching to the beat of throbbing techno music? Hey, don't look at us pal, we can't live your life for you.
Streets of Rage 2 sneaks on to XBLA today originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST.
