While earlier dalliances with the Wii U's "WiiPad" controller didn't include touchscreen interaction, a hands-on session with the "Measure Up" tech demo told me all I needed to know about the touchscreen technology behind the device.<br />
<br />
It has a stylus. A recess in the upper left of the unit hides a small, white, roughly DS Lite-size stylus. Interacting with it brings up the familiar feeling of poking at a DS screen. Much like the handheld's bottom screen, the Wii U touchscreen doesn't respond <em>perfectly</em> to tracing with a finger. And multitouch is right out. Touching two spots caused the line I was drawing to jump to a point between them, much like the DS.<br />
<br />
That suggests that Nintendo opted for a cheaper <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchscreen#Resistive">resistive touchscreen</a>, instead of a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchscreen#Capacitive">capacitive touchscreen</a> like the iPhone uses.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/wii-u-controller-has-a-ds-style-touch-screen/">Wii U controller has a DS-style touch screen</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 20:05:00 EST. Japanese purchasers of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-legend-of-zelda-spirit-tracks/">The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks</a></em> will receive a transparent quill stylus as a gift when they put down their yen for the game. <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/11/04/zelda_stylus_bonus">AndriaSang</a> reports that the stylus will be given out on launch day as an "early buyer bonus," but there's no need to pre-order.<br /> <br /> If the plastic quill seems familiar, it's because Nintendo used it as a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/nintendo-offers-bribe-for-zelda-opinions/">bribe back in 2007</a> for registering <em>Phantom Hourglass</em> and filling out a survey. <em>Spirit Tracks</em> choo-choos into retail on December 7. We're currently unaware of the quill being offered as a pre-order in North America but if the retail masses out there know differently, please let us know in the comments.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/04/japan-receives-special-zelda-spirit-tracks-stylus-with-purchase/">Japan receives special Zelda Spirit Tracks stylus with purchase</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 10:45:00 EST. Since everyone in Japan loves <em>Gundam</em>, and everyone writing this post (that's me!) loves DS accessories, it was an effective tactic.<br /><br />The <em>stars</em> of this, uh, <em>booth</em> ... were definitely the DS styli. As <em>Gundam</em> weapons, they're crafted to the scale of popular <em>Gundam </em>models and terminate in a point suitable for use on a DS. We don't want to think that's pure awesome, but here we are posting it, so you can guess how we <em>really</em> feel ...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/tgs-2009-its-a-gundam-stylus/">TGS 2009: It's a Gundam! ... stylus!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 00:00:00 EST. When we play our DS in public, we occasionally like to pretend it's a PDA, just so we look like grown-ups. As big fans of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/animal-crossing-wild-world"><em>Animal Crossing: Wild World</em></a>, we've enjoyed quite a bit of fishing on our DS. Although <em>AC</em>'s fishing is a bit more on the tranquil side, Hudson's offering looks to be a bit more intense. We <em>love</em> DS accessories. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/finally-ds-lite-accessoies-for-gothic-lolitas/">Cases</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/toytech-takes-a-stand-on-ds-accessories-stylus-stand/">styli</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/familator-taken-out-for-a-test-familate/">Famicom cartridge adapters</a>, replacement casings with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/26/someone-put-a-damn-unicycling-llama-on-their-ds/">damn llamas unicycling</a> on them -- buying stuff to use with our DS Lites is almost as enjoyable as buying stuff to use <em>in</em><br /> our DS Lites. <br /><br />But a new DS is on the way, and we have yet to make a decision about our purchase intent -- well, Eric seems to have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/nintendo-dsi-the-unboxening-and-impressioning/">arrived at a decision</a>, but the rest of us are situated somewhere in the fence area.<br /><br />Have you stalled on DS or DS Lite accessory purchases since the announcement of the DSi? You wouldn't want to have a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/ds-cases-with-faces/">Gachapin DS Lite protector</a> in your home and <em>not</em> be able to use it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/ds-daily-accessory-slowdown/">DS Daily: Accessory slowdown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. <br />Yes, several other outlets have already posted their unboxing photos and first impressions of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo-dsi">Nintendo DSi</a>, but we've put together our own article documenting the imported system's arrival, as we have a few new things that we can share with you, those things being:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Photos of a cat stalking the box while we unearthed the DSi</li>
    <li>Surprises that we didn't expect with the DSi</li>
    <li>Video of us trying to load DS Fanboy on the DSi's new Browser</li>
    <li>Video of DSi Sound's 14 music visualizers</li>
    <li>Music from a renowned Wu-tang Clan rapper</li>

Or, actually, it was probably a bigger deal than that. Like, a <em>lot</em> bigger. But, what about those purists that don't like touch-screen controls changing up the game? <br /><br />Well, Square Enix will be including a single-screen mode, which you can see to the right of this text. The bottom screen will display health information for the enemies you're currently engaging, so it still plays a role in the game. Are touch-screen controls really that big of an issue, though?<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/chrono-trigger-ds-features-optional-snes-play-mode/">Chrono Trigger DS features optional SNES play mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 16:48:00 EST. <br />If sewing dark lace onto your system cases and painting your handheld supplements black and pink to accompany your <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_Lolita">GothLoli look</a> sounds too laborsome and time-consuming, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/keys-factory">Keys Factory</a> has just the solution for your unique needs -- Infem.In, a new and complete accessory line designed to match your dark Victorian livery.<br /><br />Available in Japan starting July 31st, the new DS Lite set features a stylus, a card case (which holds 4 carts), a hard cover, a system pouch, an LCD cleaner with a case, and a pair of screen protectors, almost all of them painted black and pink, decorated with hearts and ornate accents. Each item is sold separately, with <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-19-49-en-15-infem.in.html">prices at import shop Play Asia</a> ranging from $6.90 to $14.90.<br /><br />Interestingly, Keys Factory has set up an official site just for this specific line, offering up a slick Flash presentation for the products, wallpaper downloads, and even a sliding tile puzzle mini-game. The company must have high hopes for this somber set!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">See also:</span> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/fit-for-a-princess-ds-plays-dress-up/">Fit for a princess: DS plays dress-up<br /><br /></a><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infem-in-accessories/">infem.in accessories</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infem-in-accessories/#940232"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/20080722-kf-gothic-lolita-cases-ec-dsf-09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infem-in-accessories/#940231"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/20080722-kf-gothic-lolita-cases-ec-dsf-08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infem-in-accessories/#940230"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/20080722-kf-gothic-lolita-cases-ec-dsf-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infem-in-accessories/#940229"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/20080722-kf-gothic-lolita-cases-ec-dsf-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/infem-in-accessories/#940228"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/20080722-kf-gothic-lolita-cases-ec-dsf-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/finally-ds-lite-accessoies-for-gothic-lolitas/">Finally, DS Lite accessories for Gothic Lolitas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 09:30:00 EST. Play Asia has the <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-19-49-en-15-yatterman+touch+pen.html">sets in stock</a> for a cheap $5.99, but we passed on the deal, realizing that we had no idea what a <span style="font-style: italic;">Yatterman</span> is or why we would want it on a stylus! Apparently, it's an anime remake of a late-70's Japanese show?<br /> <br /> We went searching for some stylus-and-stand alternatives, and, wouldn't you know it, we found out that Toytech has a whole line of interesting accessories with more recognizable characters. We're often <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/28/sword-stylus-comes-with-ninja-gaiden-preorder/">wooed by</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/another-way-to-get-dragon-quest-into-your-ds/">game-themed</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/01/limited-edition-orcs-and-elves-stylus-cant-cast-real-spells/">styli</a>, but never has the Force been with a touchpen so much as with these mini Lightsabers. Releasing on July 31st, these official Nintendo and Lucas Arts styli are sure to sell like hotcakes (we can think of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/star-wars-the-clone-wars-ds-is-not-a-wii-clone/">at least one game</a> they'll go well with). Yet if you plan to buy them, you'll have a tough choice to make -- should you get the three small replicas for $7.99, or the two slightly bigger light-up sabers for $16.99? Choices, choices.<br /><br />So far we've only seen these beauties available on Amazon through seller BD&amp;A, but we're sure they'll hit other retailers as time passes. If you're too cheap to make the purchase, though, be sure to check out our guide for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/12/cheap-stylus-gifts-that-arent-really-styli/">stylus alternatives</a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.theirisnetwork.org/">Kimiko</a>!]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Star-Light-Lightsaber-Stylus/dp/B00196XE34/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_text_b">Source</a>: Nintendo DS Star Wars Light Up Lightsaber Stylus 2 Pack<br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Star-Wars-Lightsaber-Stylus/dp/B00196VCLU/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_text_b">Source</a>: Nintendo DS Star Wars Lightsaber Stylus 3 Pack<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/poke-the-force-with-lightsaber-styli/">Poke the Force with Lightsaber styli</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 12:30:00 EST. We can imagine what makes for a good prison guard: somebody who has seen the show <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118421/"><em>Oz</em></a> and is skilled in the ways of the nightstick. What else could a wannabe prison guard need? Nintendo, apparently.<br /><br />At <span>North Branch Correctional Institution, prison Warden John A. Rowley mentioned that the state-of-the-art touch-screen system that the prison uses to control the population is, apparently, very similar to that of the DS. He commented that "</span><span>Nintendo was a great tool to train today's officers." We couldn't agree more, since the DS is not only a great handheld system for gaming, but also a cheap way to introduce folks to the interface of a touch-screen, not to mention how to effectively use a stylus.<br /><br />So, while the Warden comments that Nintendo helped train his guards, we think the system can go further. It can train grandparents on how to use a PDA (or you can <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/homebrew-using-the-ds-as-a-pda/">turn it into one</a> for them), among other things. What a great little system!<br /></span><span /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5018868/games-help-prison-guards-guard-better">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/nintendo-helps-make-a-better-prison-guard/">Nintendo helps make a better prison guard</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. Drop-in anytime wireless co-op play? Awesome! Stylus-driven gameplay akin to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/26/pirate-gaiden-dragon-sword/"><em>Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword</em></a>? <em>Awesome</em>. We're excited.<br /><br />For the Padawans out there looking for more, know that the game's project lead, Feargus Carroll, recently spoke with IGN. He details the story, which has Count Dooku joining force with the Nightsisters, whom are described as "Sith Witches with Force powers and Lightsaber skills." They have nasty things planned for the Jedi and it's up to the player to stop them with the six available characters, which are Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Plo Koon and Kit Fisto.<br /><br />Feargus also talks a bit about the stylus-driven controls, stating that just about everything will be controlled with the stylus. Movement, attacks, Force powers and just about anything else you can imagine is utilized through the stylus. It sounds ambitious, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/ds-fanboy-review-ninja-gaiden-dragon-sword/">it's been pulled off once</a> already.<br /><br />All in all, we're excited for Lucasarts' DS entry. What say you?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/ds-clone-wars-project-lead-talks-up-the-game/">DS Clone Wars project lead talks up the game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 17:00:00 EST. If there's one thing we know you can do in the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/delving-into-disgaeas-extras/"><em>Disgaea DS</em></a>, it's inflict a lot of damage. Well, we know that and <em>the game will be awesome</em>. It's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/disgaea-1/712067/full/"><em>Disgaea</em></a>. This isn't rocket science, people!<br />
<br />
As said above, the video features Nippon ichi showing off the many ways you can inflict <em>ridiculous</em> amounts of damage. Like, in <em>the millions</em>. The other notable thing about the video above is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/an-explosively-cute-bonus-for-disgaea/">the pre-order bonus</a> for Japanese gamers. It's possible we could be receiving the same bonus when the title releases to North America in August, but nothing has been set in stone, yet.<br />

When they started taking preorders for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/activision-announces-guitar-hero-ds-lite-bundle-new-tony-hawk/"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em></a>, RedOctane revealed a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/guitar-hero-on-tour-controller-harmonious-with-ds-phats/">second package</a> containing not just the game and controller, but also a case decorated with a flame-enhanced version of the game's logo. That case is now available for preorder independent of the game, at a $16.99 price point. More choice is always better, but this seems like a strange option. Why not buy it and the game <a href="http://www.redoctane.com/ghontour-dsflames.html">together</a> and save yourself seven dollars?<br /><br />You can then put that money into a five-pack of official pick styli! Alternately, if you aren't concerned with savings and would rather eschew the flames case in favor of something classier, you can get an identical case with an embossed black <em>Guitar Hero </em>logo. It's the more subdued way to carry your tiny fake guitar.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.redoctane.com/nds5pk-pickstylus.html">Read</a>: Pick Stylus 5-pack<br /><a href="http://www.redoctane.com/flames-dslitecase.html">Read</a>: Flames Carrying Case<br /><a href="http://www.redoctane.com/emboss-dslitecase.html">Read</a>: Emboss Carrying Case<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/26/fill-your-tour-bus-with-redoctanes-guitar-hero-on-tour-stuff/">Fill your tour bus with RedOctane's Guitar Hero: On Tour stuff</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 May 2008 10:15:00 EST. It's called <em>Major DS</em> and, aside from just being a baseball title (enough for this <a href="http://www.philadelphiaphillies.com">sports fan</a>), it has great appeal in its unique control scheme. As you can witness in the video above, pitching and batting is handled by utilizing the stylus on the touch-screen. It looks like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/2k-and-konami-reveal-mlb-power-pros-2008/">MLB Power Pros</a> </em>is getting a run for its money soon ...<br /><br />Any sports fans think Tomy is on to something here with <em>Major DS</em>? <div align="left">[Update 2: Pretty sure you get two.]<br />
<br />
There just aren't enough Slime products for us. The <em>hundred bajillion or so</em> that currently exist fail to completely cover every aspect of our lives. Square Enix is working to make sure that we never have to <em>not</em> look at a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/a-slime-inflates/">Slime</a> again, starting with the outside of our DS Lite. <br />
<br />
For just $7, you can get one of two adorable Slime styli that fit into the Lite just like the normal ones, with one important difference: a pleasantly vacant little Slime peeking out from the stylus slot. Preorders are set to ship in July, just in time (we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/gamefly-lists-new-elebits-2-title-possible-dragon-quest-iv-date/"><em>think</em></a>) for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/03/dragon-quest-iv-footage-not-making-the-wait-any-easier/"><em>Dragon Quest IV</em></a> remake.</div>

But let's not focus on the obvious answers. With adventure games, for instance we expect good stylus controls; point and click isn't difficult when your method of input is a <em>pointer with which you click things</em>. What are your favorite <em>other</em> games that use primarily stylus controls? <em>Elite Beat Agents</em> and <em>Ouendan</em> come to mind; while it seems like the stylus would make rhythm games ridiculously easy, these games manage to keep it fun and challenging while presenting a great interface. We're also fond of the punishing brutality of <em>Trauma Center</em>, which made us swear the first time we sewed bad stitches and got lectured about it. The recent <em>NInja Gaiden: Dragon Sword</em> boasts stylus swordplay that is unstoppable. But that's just the tip of a very large iceberg. For as much as we complain about bad stylus controls, so many games do it well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/ds-daily-getting-it-right/">DS Daily: Getting it right</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 09:00:00 EST. Adventure titles, for example, really benefit from the DS's stylus controls.<br /><br />There are some instances, though, in which the stylus just seems forced, as if the developers added in these controls simply because their game was made for the DS. Most of the time, fortunately, these games will have d-pad options also, but sometimes they don't.<br /><br />Have you run into any games where the stylus controls were clunky and unnecessary? If so, which titles are the worst offenders?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/27/ds-daily-forced-stylus/">DS Daily: Forced stylus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 27 Apr 2008 10:30:00 EST. We don't know why you would need 50 <em>New Super Mario Bros.</em> styli. Maybe you want to give them out as party favors. Maybe you live in an octopus family. Or it could be that your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/ds-daily-oral-fixation/">habit of chewing on your touch pens</a> ruins them within minutes.<br />
<br />
Whatever the reason, this is totally your chance to buy 50 <em>New Super Mario Bros. </em>styli in plastic eggs. NCSX, in an effort to clear out their warehouse, has marked the package down from $130 to $95. We <em>suppose</em> you could buy them individually for <a href="http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/YJN-NSMB.html">$3.95</a>, but what are you going to do with just <em>one</em> stylus? Ridiculous.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/the-best-deal-on-a-sack-of-styli-youll-see-today/">The best deal on a sack of styli you'll see today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Apr 2008 15:00:00 EST. I don't really chew on it, but rather, just hold it there with my lips. The stops and starts in Layton meant that I was often not doing much with it, but just studying the screen, which gave me the opportunity to realize where I was putting my poor stylus. Here's hoping I'm not alone in this weird habit ... am I?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/ds-daily-oral-fixation/">DS Daily: Oral fixation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST. <br />You can dress up your DS Lite in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/fit-for-a-princess-ds-plays-dress-up/">frilly bows</a> and baby outfits all you want, but it'll never reach its full cuteness potential without this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Mashimaro/">Mashimaro</a> case. Accessory distributor Nuri Tech has brought the Korean character to the states, offering the protective, decorated shell for $19.99. To promote the new product, Nuri Tech is throwing in a DS Lite Strap Touchpen and a set of screen protectors with each order starting today until April 1st. This is in addition to the stylus pen that comes with every Mashimaro case!<br /><br />Unfamiliar with the chubby, expressionless bunny? He has a few Flash animations <a href="http://ink.pierski.com/mashimaro/index.html">floating around</a>, but here's a quick description: "In a quiet, small, and peaceful town in the forest, our Mashimaro is always causing trouble here and there in the forest with his little pot belly full of guts, witty spontaneous responses, and playful manner. He may seem a little prankish at times, but he adds a bit of flavor and puts smiles and cries into a boring life in the forest."<br /><br />Yes, this is just the accessory you need to put "smiles and cries" into your boring life. Peek past the break for more photos of the DS Lite case and bonus stylus pen.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/adorable-mashimaro-case-now-available-stateside/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Adorable Mashimaro case now available stateside</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/adorable-mashimaro-case-now-available-stateside/">Adorable Mashimaro case now available stateside</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 15:00:00 EST. Now, it didn't really <em>need</em> a reboot, nor is it 100% a reboot in the normal way we think of reboots, but it did take an established franchise and retool it for another platform. Now, whether it was a good retooling or a bad retooling remains to be seen.<br /><br />But, we were wondering what other established franchises could use a reboot in this manner? What about a <em>Crazy Taxi</em> game on the DS that has you controlling an interactive steering wheel on the touch-screen or only turning with the shoulder buttons? What about a <em>Sims</em> game that allows you to control them only by barking commands through the microphone? How about a <em>Space Channel 5</em> game redone with <em>Ouendan</em> controls? <br /><br />What can you come up with?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/11/ds-daily-franchise-reboot/">DS Daily: Franchise reboot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST. I can read while cuddling the child, so why can't I sit around with my DS? Oh, sure, I can play a <em>few</em> games, but too many require both hands, which means they're going to sit on my shelf for a while. <br /><br />Why's this important? Well, it's really not, at least for me -- I'll survive -- but when reader Zack wrote in to tell us about his uncle, it made me pay particular attention. See, Zack's uncle only has full use of one hand, but he loves his DS. Zack wrote to us asking that <em>we</em> ask <em>you</em> for your recommendations on games that require mainly stylus input. Of course, he knows the obvious titles, like the <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/ace-attorney"><em>Ace Attorney</em></a> series ... what he's looking for are more obscure titles. Even homebrew games will work! So start your day off by doing something nice: recommend your favorites, and help out a fellow gamer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/10/ds-daily-one-handed/">DS Daily: One-handed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST. <br />MashiMaro could be described as Korea's answer to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sanrio">Sanrio</a>, Japan's heavily-merchandised community of Hello Kitty characters. The adorable, chubby rabbit sits atop a mountain of plushies and other branded products that are too cute for many to resist. Unlike his Sanrio colleagues, however, Mashimaro can be a jerk. In the <a href="http://ink.pierski.com/mashimaro/index.html">Flash animations</a> where he made his debut, he can be seen stealing food and pushing a pig off a cliff. He's a bad bunny to the bone. <br /><br />Joytron recently put out a line of cases decorated with MashiMaro scenes, and they're just as cute as the thuggish cottontail himself. The shells slip over your DS Lite, adding an extra layer of plastic protection to your handheld. Joytron will even throw in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pen">pen stylus</a> with each order. Hop into the gallery below for more shots of the different "System Skin Cases" now available in Korea.<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://ruliweb.empas.com/ruliboard/read.htm?table=game_nds&amp;page=2&amp;num=17857&amp;main=nds&amp;find=&amp;ftext=">Ruliweb</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/toughen-up-your-ds-with-a-pudgy-bunny/">Toughen up your DS with a pudgy bunny</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 11:15:00 EST. Either we can utilize the DS's unique touch-screen interface, or we can navigate the tried-and-true seas of the d-pad and the handheld's face buttons. <div align="left"><br />So, do you find yourself loving the idea of stylus controls, but often revert to d-pad-based solutions when confronted with the option? In this day and age, a person with a knack for the more <a href="http://www.engadget.com">technological things</a> in life can freely stroll throughout their local Wal-Mart's Eletronics section, taking pictures of <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calaggie/2240570197/in/photostream/">various things</a> with their nifty camera phones. Pictures like the above rack of Nintendo-themed lunchbox DS cases.<br /><br />Upon checking Wal-Mart's site to see exactly what was in each tin, we found a bundle of:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Headphones</li>
    <li>Car Adapter</li>
    <li>Screen protectors (2)<br /></li>
    <li>Case</li>
    <li>Decal</li>
    <li>Cartridge cases (2)</li>
    <li>3 colored styli</li>
</ul>
Wow, quite a bit of goods for $27.88. But is it a good enough deal? If you want to see the bundle for yourself, head on past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/nintendo-themed-lunchbox-lacks-only-the-thermos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo-themed lunchbox lacks only the thermos</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/nintendo-themed-lunchbox-lacks-only-the-thermos/">Nintendo-themed lunchbox lacks only the thermos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 22:30:00 EST. The world's favorite <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doraemon">blue robot cat from the future</a> is back with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/06/new-doraemon-ds-lite-accessories/">more</a> stuff to put on your DS. The <em>Doraemon Waku Waku DS Accessory Set</em> includes a system shell, a card case, an extending stylus, and a screen-cleaning strap all bearing the adorable visage of Doraemon. The DS case has a repeating light blue Doraemon pattern that we think is pretty nice, and the card case features three Doraemons (Doraemen? Doraemans?) in cute poses.<br /><br />NCSX is taking preorders for this $23 accessory kit from Hori, to be sent out when it releases on March 6th. If you're looking to protect, clean, write on, and carry games with your DS, it seems like a good option.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/doraemon-returns-from-the-future-to-make-your-ds-cute-again/">Doraemon returns from the future to make your DS cute again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 20:00:00 EST.
