Sadly, we get another shooter, but the other title on offer is a fairly unique title. Hit up the video above, then head past the break for some more.
Continue reading VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 3/17/08

VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 3/17/08 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 20:00:00 EST. This week's Virtual Console releases include two titles on Nintendo platforms. One of the titles just released in Europe this past Friday and is a very competent shoot-em-up. The only problem is, the Virtual Console already has plenty of them already.

This week's releases are:

Spelunker (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)

Super R-Type (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)

As always, be sure to stop back later for our video wrap-up of today's releases.

VC Monday Madness: Super R-Type and Spelunker originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 09:45:00 EST. Let's just skip to the talking about them, what do you say?

Spelunker (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): In Spelunker, you play an adventurer who travels to the world's most junk-littered caves to do a little clean up to try to impress a girl he likes who's also a Greenpeace member. Meanwhile, bats (which love cave junk, because of how much easier it makes echolocation) try to kill you. ... Or something like that.

Super R-Type (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): If you don't want to put your fist through a wall, you'd probably best avoiding Super R-Type, known for its high difficulty and lack of check points. But maybe you want to put your fist through a wall. Maybe you have a dilapidated wall that needs removing, or are considering adding some new fist-shaped windows. If so, Super R-Type is there for you.

Of course, you won't get the box when you purchase Super R-Type on the Virtual Console (you are purchasing Super R-Type ... right?), but we couldn't resist revisiting such a deliciously bad pun. You just don't get that kind of cringeworthy wordplay on today's boxart!

The NES version of Operation Wolf also makes an appearance today, and if you ask us it's one of the very few Virtual Console games that would actually benefit from added Wiimote functionality.
In some cases, they're about equal in quantity (which, lately, means low). Not this week. In the U.S. we got one game. Japan? Four. And one of them is Phantasy Star II. We desperately wish that we could say this marks a return to 2007-level release density, but we really can't predict that. Next Monday and Tuesday could roll around and drop one game on us again. Let's just try to be optimistic!

Anyway, Phantasy Star II is really awesome. It's a beautiful futuristic RPG that is totally worth eight bucks (if you don't have a PS2). It makes us sad that Sega isn't really doing much in the way of RPGs these days.

We certainly wouldn't mind seeing Super R-Type, either.
