XBLM Deal of the Week: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

In what will assuredly be the longest headline for any Xbox Live Deal of the Week post we'll ever run, Microsoft's offering a $5 reduction in price (from 1200 to 800) on Capcom's Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix this week.

That's right, folks -- you're reading this correctly. We're on the second week straight that the Xbox Live Deal of the Week was something worthwhile and not, say, DLC from a three year old game or, erm, DLC from a two year old game. We're not quite sure that the big M and Xbox Live are giving Steam a run for its money with deals quite yet, but we are plopping down our virtual bucks that much more frequently on the service as of late. Here's hoping that we'll keep seeing tasty deals like this rather than some of the ... ahem ... less than savory items we've seen in the past.

SFII HD stats site up and running (also punching)

Attention all stat-loving digital pugilists, the official stat tracking site for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is now live for both the XBLA and PSN versions. The site lets players view plenty of stats that aren't available on the regular leaderboard, including ranking, rating, wins, losses and perfects. It even tracks the number of throws and projectiles used. Stats can be viewed for all characters combined or for individual characters, and you can also compare your stats with another player.

Finally, you can prove to all your friends that they're nothing but turtling, fireball spamming jerks. FYI, it seems like the server is getting hammered by stat fiends right now, as we've been unable to bring up our own stats all day.

Cutest thing you'll see today: Street Fighter kids

The rough-and-tumble Street Fighters enjoying their youth is likely the most adorable thing we'll see all week. Kei Acedera, an illustrator and art director at Imaginism, has just such a drawing in her portfolio on the company's website. If you click the image above, you'll be treated to the full work, which also includes the rest of the Super Street Fighter II Turbo cast cheering in the background (Dhalsim's long arms were a nice touch).

Acedera's work includes illustrating books for Harper Collins and design work for Disney and Sony. Her bio also states she makes t-shirts for her guinea pig, Tobi. We wonder if she puts little pants on Tobi and dyes him so he looks like the little Blanka in the picture ...

XBLA Awards: Braid can't rewind loss to Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers recovered from a 4-month gimp to be crowned the Xbox Live Arcade "Game of the Year" in the second annual community voting awards. Somewhat surprisingly, Castle Crashers also managed to nab "Best Co-op Mode" despite being virtually unplayable online for four out of its seven months in release. On its way to top honors, The Behemoth's beat-em-up notably beat out its fellow indie nominee, Braid, which was famously dismissed by an American youth spokesperson.

Braid's losing streak continued in the "Best Single Player Game" category, which was claimed by Orange Box cutout Portal: Still Alive (oh right, it has "exclusive" challenge maps), but Jonathan Blow's timeless effort did mange to win "Best Innovation" amid stiff competition. (We were certain Kefling's innovative "use of Avatars" was a shoo-in.)

The complete list of awards and recipients is posted after the break.

Capcom not done with HD Remixing

Capcom's talking about HD remixing some more titles following the success of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Capcom VP Christian Svensson tells VideoGamer that not every game needs it, but the company is going to "potentially" apply the formula to other fighting games in the company's catalog. Next time, however, it plans do it "better, based on what [it] learned" -- which we'll take to mean cutting down development time.

When asked if Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would be HD-ified, Svensson commented that it's probably the title fans request the most, but he has no news to share about that. We know retro Mega Man is en vogue, but an HD remix of Mega Man 2 could be interesting.

Street Fighter HD not coming to Europe until 2009

European PS3 fans are still without Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. In spite of its tremendous success, it doesn't appear our friends across the Atlantic will get their hands on the game any time soon. According to Edge, the game is certainly not coming before the end of the year. "All indications point to a Q1 release for the title," although they note that it should be "earlier" than later.

"There are reasons why we can't always release games when we want to, but we are working hard on getting the game out as soon as possible," a Capcom spokesperson explained. Well, honestly -- we're wondering what the reasons are. Do we blame Capcom? Sony? Or do we blame the Grinch for stealing Street Fighter away from Europe?

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix sells 250k units

Why is Ryu showing us his pearly whites and giving us a thumbs up? That's because Capcom has just announced they have sold an impressive 250,000 copies of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A breakdown of the sales numbers between the two consoles was not released. The game was released on November 25th, so it hasn't even been a month since its debut. According to Capcom, it also broke both day one and week one sales records, and it will "most likely" go on to break the 30-days sales record as well. It might even become the highest grossing digital title ever.

What did you expect? Capcom took an old-school favorite, improved upon it, and unleashed it onto all the SF fanboys. Street Fighter forever!

Free SFII HD Remix soundtrack get!

If you've been playing (deep breath) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix lately, chances are you've been positively rocking out to the revamped soundtrack. As it turns out, Capcom actually partnered with Overclocked Remix, a website that specializes in remixing game music, to create the soundtrack for SSFIITHDR. Gamers from all over the planet supplied the tracks for the soundtrack, and now OC Remix is giving away the entire soundtrack for free. That's precisely zero dollars. The soundtrack is being offered both as a full album download and as individual MP3s of each track. So, head over to OC Remix and get yourself some free music.

Note: As of this writing, we've had trouble getting the OC Remix site to load.

Philosony - Ryu's Episteme

This Thanksgiving I want to give the bulk of my thanks to one company for helping me answer a question that has been bothering me for over 15 years. The company? Capcom. The question? Put simply, do I really have preternatural Street Fighter skills?

I still remember the first time I saw a SF2 arcade machine. It was at Walley World Six Flags Magic Mountain in the Spring of 1991, and the first character I chose was Dhalsim. The inspired lovechild of Iyengar and Reed Richards got me hooked and my freshman year of high school was a non-stop deluge of fierces, roundhouses, and quarters. There was no practice mode, no free play, and no internet to turn to for tips and tricks. Becoming a BAMF in a fighting game back then took nonstop on-the-job training. And I trained well - so well, in fact, that I soon ran out of people willing to sacrifice their money for my amusement. Even when the home version arrived my friends soon tired of me whupping on them. Being able to defeat them with my eyes closed probably didn't help. The thought of being a big fish in a small pond never occurred to me. All I knew was that I had a gift and no one could prove me wrong.* Would that natural talent hold up if I ever faced real competition?

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix dragon punches XBLA

After its official announcement well over a year ago, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is finally landing on Xbox Live Arcade. For the always controversial price of 1200 Microsoft Points, you get a completely redrawn cast of characters and a while slew of reworked backgrounds. Let's not forget the game comes with some revamped tunes as well. Oh, and of course there's the (reportedly) improved netcode too, which will hopefully smooth out those online wrinkles.

Go get the trial game and tell us what you think. Was it worth the wait? For that matter, is it worth the scratch? Basically, is it the best around?

PSN Tuesday: Street Fighter II HD; excellent PSN titles now $5

Blessed be this day, for soon we may never have to type out "Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix" again. Optimistically, it's just this PSN post, maybe one tomorrow about the Xbox 360 version on XBLA, and hopefully one more after that when Capcom finally announces the PSN European release.

What certainly should not be overlooked in today's update is the PSN price promotion that offers excellent titles like PixelJunk Eden and echochrome at a measly $5 -- for a limited time! The full North American update can be hadoukened after the break.

Street Fighter HD delayed for European PSN

Capcom has confirmed that Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has been delayed for the European PSN. There is currently no official release date for the title in the region and no explanation was given for the hold up.

North America is still expected to get the title today with its special Tuesday edition of the PSN update (due to the Thanksgiving holiday). European Xbox 360 owners should still be able to pick up the game when it launches on XBLA tomorrow.

Street Fighter HD without a release date in Europe

While US gamers will be able to enjoy Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on PlayStation Network today, Europeans will not be as lucky. For reasons unknown, Capcom's 2D fighter has no set released date across the Atlantic. That means our European readers are going to have to make a stealth attack on the American PlayStation Store, or they'll have to buy the game on Xbox LIVE Arcade -- the game will be on Microsoft's console tomorrow in Europe.

Street Fighter II HD pricing semi-announced

Now that we have a release date, Capcom decided it to be the opportune time to announce the pricing for remake Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Deep breath, because it isn't cheap.

According to Capcom's John Dianomon, SSFIITHDR will release to the Playstation 3's PSN for (drum roll) $14.99. True, this isn't an official price announcement for Street Fighter on the XBLA, but unless Capcom decides to sell it for a different price on each network, we think it's a safe bet that Street Fighter will cost Xbox gamers 1200 Microsoft points. A bit expensive, but re-drawing old sprites is no cheap task.

Capcom's screenshot reveals Street Fighter HD Remix release date

Either intentionally or unintentionally, Capcom announced (using a screenshot, no less) that November 26th is the release date for their upcoming XBLA release Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

Yes sir, in their press release regarding the new NXE Street Fighter "branded destination experience", they included a screenshot that spills the release date beans. The screen grab (seen above) explicitly says that SSFIITHDR will be "Coming Nov 26 to Xbox LIVE Arcade" ... pretty cut and dry, eh?
