Sometimes, just sometimes, they're about making the world a better place. Such is the case today, as Nintendo has partnered with <a href="http://www.millionstars.org/">Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation</a> to place Wii kiosks featuring such games as<em> Super Mario Galaxy</em> and <em>Wii Sports</em> in hospitals across both the US and Canada to help lift the spirits of seriously ill kids. <br /><br />The move echoes <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/microsoft-companions-in-courage-partner-to-bring-xbox-live-to-c/">a similar effort by Microsoft</a> last month, which saw the company link up with NHL vet Pat LaFontaine's foundation Companions in Courage to bring hundreds of Xbox 360 kiosks to children's hospitals in the US. According to a statement, Nintendo plans to manufacture some 1,250 new Fun Center kiosks as part of the partnership, with the charity hoping to have around 500 of these in hospitals by the end of 2008. The first pair of Fun Centers will be donated later today to the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles during what Nintendo describes as a <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20080624005527&amp;newsLang=en"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em>-themed launch event</a>, while Mario will also be on hand, no doubt to discourage Bowser from crashing the party.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/25/nintendo-starlight-partner-to-help-sick-kids/">Nintendo, Starlight partner to help sick kids</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 08:20:00 EST. <br />Yesterday's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-mario-galaxy">popular video demonstration</a> of how <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-mario-galaxy">Super Mario Galaxy</a></em> would look on the SNES made us wish there really were 2D remakes of the 3D games we love. Wouldn't it be <em>totally rad</em> if <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/medal-of-honor">Medal of Honor: Heroes 2</a></em> was recreated as a top-down shooter in the style of <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl50v196tqU">Medal of Honor: Infiltrator</a></em> (GBA)? Or if <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/superpapermario">Super Paper Mario</a></em> was, uh ... Okay, so that example doesn't work.<br /><br />What 3D titles, old and new, would you want to see turned into a 2D project?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/wii-warm-up-2d-remakes/">Wii Warm Up: 2D remakes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 09:00:00 EST. Nintendo's Italian plumber Mario caught the eye of the <span>Academy of Interactive Arts &amp; Sciences</span> at this year's <span>Interactive Achievement Awards, nabbing an award for Adventure Game of the Year. If there was one game that could be classified as an "adventure" back in 2007, we would definitely have to say <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a>.<br /><br />Also, Nintendo ended up walking away with another award. The winner of Handheld Game of the Year was none other than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/05/ds-fanboy-review-the-legend-of-zelda-phantom-hourglass/"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em></a>. As for the other awards, none were for Nintendo or games on Nintendo platforms. So, you could probably care less.<br /><br /><br /></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/08/super-mario-galaxy-receives-interactive-achievement-award/">Super Mario Galaxy receives Interactive Achievement Award</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Feb 2008 20:00:00 EST. Despite nabbing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/bioshock-nabs-record-breaking-12-nominations-from-aias-awards/">12 nominations</a> for the (deep breath) Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BioShock/">BioShock</a></span> was bested in the Overall Game of the Year category by cinematic tour de force, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/callofduty4"><span style="font-style: italic;">Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</span></a>. Both games were awarded four, err, awards at this year's event, held alongside <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dice-2008">D.I.C.E.</a> at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. <br /><br />The <span style="font-style: italic;">Orange Box</span>'s <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Portal/">Portal</a></span> made off with some shiny statuettes, as did fake instrument extravaganza, <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RockBand/">Rock Band</a></span>.<span style="font-style: italic;"> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SuperMarioGalaxy/">Super Mario Galaxy</a></span> was deemed the best "adventure" game in absence of a "platformer" category (a sad commentary in itself), while <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/assassinscreed"><span style="font-style: italic;">Assassin's Creed</span></a> got a hearty <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">stab</span> pat on the back for its fancy animation. While it's a natural assumption to make, one shouldn't forget about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=yoshiaki+koizumi&amp;searchsubmit=">Yoshiaki Koizumi</a>, the director behind the critically-acclaimed platformer!<br /><br />In a recent interview with Next-Gen, Koizumi championed the importance of surprising players: "If you think about games only as a thing that you interact with, you're missing the possibility of immersion. The inspirations that I tend to draw on for that all come from real life itself. Hiking on a mountain and seeing a cave and thinking about what's inside -- it's that sense of wonder and excitement I want players to feel."<br /><br />Well, we certainly had a lot of that with just the Gusty Garden Galaxy!<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/super-mario-galaxys-unsung-star-talks-player-experience/">Super Mario Galaxy's unsung star talks player experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 10:30:00 EST. In little over 60 weeks, the Wii console has managed to sell over 5 million units in its home territory of Japan. As impressive as this is, it falls short of the DS, which achieved sales figures of this nature in 56 weeks. But, the Wii did manage to beat the PS2, which cracked the 5 million mark after 66 weeks on the market.<br /><br />A system is only so good as its games though, right? Well, in Japan the games pushing the Wii are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/have-a-pint-and-a-go-at-wii-sports/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> (2.6 million copies sold as of now), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/happy-funtime-memorial-day-video-rejected-wii-play-minigames/"><em>Wii Play</em></a> (2.1 million copies sold as of now), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/30/metareview-mario-party-8/"><em>Mario Party 8</em></a> ( 1.1 million copies sold as of now) and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/an-accessory-for-the-balance-board-you-dont-own-yet/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> (1.1 million copies sold as of now). <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/super-mario-galaxy-gets-a-few-gdca-nods/"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> comes in fifth place in the country, only selling a total of 843,961 copies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/wii-serves-over-5-million-in-japan/">Wii serves over 5 million in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 12:00:00 EST. So, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/27/miyamoto-talks-mario/">Miyamoto</a> and co. must be beaming with happiness to hear that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/meta-video-review-super-mario-galaxy/"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> got the nod in several categories for the Game Developer's Choice Awards. If our opinion means anything (it doesn't), we liked the game a lot.<br /><br />Overall, <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/stop-the-presses-love-for-galaxy-apparently-not-universal/">Super Mario Galaxy</a> </span>gets its hat tossed into two categories, although many* might consider them to be the <span style="font-style: italic;">best</span> two categories: Best Game Design and Game of the Year. It's up against some tough competition, however, as undersea romp <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/todays-ridiculous-rumor-bioshock-for-the-wii/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Bioshock</span></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/dude-wheres-my-portal/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Portal</span></a>, which has seemed to help pie's ugly cousin cake propel itself into the stratosphere of popularity, will undoubtedly give Mario a run for his coin (or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/a-video-guide-to-the-stars/">stars</a>).<br /><br />Head past the break for all of the nominees.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/super-mario-galaxy-gets-a-few-gdca-nods/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Super Mario Galaxy gets a few GDCA nods</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/super-mario-galaxy-gets-a-few-gdca-nods/">Super Mario Galaxy gets a few GDCA nods</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 20:00:00 EST. <em>Nooo</em>, not <em>those</em> balls. Get your mind out of the gutter, you disgusting piece of filth. These are super balls, the kind which need no human host to survive and can freely bounce about the galaxy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/smg-update-toy-robots-manta-rays-and-more/">your child's bedroom</a> or anywhere of their own volition. These balls truly are <em>super</em>.<br /><br />Of course, they won't be available until April of this year, so this is only an opportunity to preorder. Each set will cost $22, with a variety of different balls on offer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/marios-balls-have-been-around-the-galaxy-and-are-on-their-way-to-you/">Mario's balls have been around the galaxy and are on their way to you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jan 2008 20:00:00 EST. In the beginning there was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_128"><em>Mario 128</em></a> and the world was without news. And the Spirit of Mario moved upon the face of galaxies. And Reggie Fils-Aime said, let there be a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/super-mario-galaxy-dated-nov-12-2007/">release date</a>; and there was hype and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/famitsu-gives-super-mario-galaxy-38-40/">critical</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/metareview-super-mario-galaxy-wii/">acclaim</a>. And we saw the copies and Toys R Us gift cards, and it was good.<br /><br />And the Good Egg Galaxy and Flipswitch Galaxy were the first day. And we said, "This control scheme is alright." And we captured stars and struggled with the camera: and it was so. And we called the game fun.<br /><br />And the Honeyhive Galaxy, Loopdeeloop Galaxy and Bowser Jr.'s Robot Reactor were the second day. And we said, Dear God please do we really have to use faulty controls and race through a crappy Wave Race clone to get one frackin' star? And we persevered through and got the star. And we said the Bee Suit was cute and honey climbing was fun. And the camera decided to change our flight path and we kept falling off the level; and we saw that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/variety-says-mario-galaxy-shows-wiis-weaknesses/">it was</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/nega-review-super-mario-galaxy/">frustrating</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/game-of-the-year-04-super-mario-galaxy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq's Top 10 of 2007: Super Mario Galaxy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/game-of-the-year-04-super-mario-galaxy/">Joystiq's Top 10 of 2007: Super Mario Galaxy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jan 2008 12:00:00 EST. Well now, what is this? A source of information regarding <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/22/no-mega-man-in-brawl-it-seems/">Super Smash Bros Brawl</a> </em>that isn't from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dojo">dojo</a>? We'll take it!<br /><br />Apparently, Rosalina from the Wii's current <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/galaxy-back-down-to-2-in-all-time-rankings-we-burn-our-copies/">most-popular game</a> will be making an appearance in the Wii's most-popular upcoming game. She's going to be an assist trophy, as one might imagine, so she won't be playable. However, it's nice to see another Nintendo character join the obscenely large roster of folks showing their faces in the upcoming game.<br /><br />Other tidbits of worth from the time <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/24/jump-festa-brawl-impressions-thrilled-is-not/">enjoying the demo</a> at Jump Festa pertain to another assist trophy in Duster from <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_3">Mother 3</a>, </em>the Sandbag actually existing as an item during fights and playable characters Kirby and the Pok&eacute;mon Trainer, who plays like his N64 version and shouts the name of Pok&eacute;mon he is using, respectively.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=32389">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/28/jump-festa-play-sessions-reveal-new-assist-trophy-impressions/">Jump Festa play sessions reveal new assist trophy, impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Dec 2007 18:00:00 EST. A little <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/mass-effect-sex-scene-is-sfw/">lesbianism</a> goes a long way as the <em>New York Times</em> names <em>Mass Effect</em> its game of the year for 2007. The <em><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/23/arts/23schi.html?_r=1&amp;th&amp;emc=th&amp;oref=slogin">NYT</a></em> bestowed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/masseffect"><em>Mass Effect</em></a> with the honor for its "focus on character development, personal growth and moral tension, all fueled by a graphics system created to evoke emotional empathy." <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank Future: Tools of Destruction</em> was honored for being the shining star on the PS3 and <em>BioShock</em> was named the "best newcomer." There's also digs at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo3"><em>Halo 3</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> for being "unambitious representations of the state of the art."<br /><br />Speaking of unambitious, for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/30/nytimes-ps3-is-299-gt5-best-seller-and-xbox-uses-cell-chip/">second time in less than a month</a> the <em>New York Times</em> copyeditors took a nap (albeit a minor one) on a video game-related story, which is slowly becoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/21/gamedailys-biggest-story-of-07-record-shattering-game-sales/">inappropriate in covering an $18 billion-plus industry</a>. There's no telling when reporter Seth Schiesel submitted his copy for this piece, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/18/e3-returns-to-la-convention-center-next-july-remains-invite-onl/">E3 2008 was already confirmed for the Los Angeles Convention Center</a> last Tuesday, so the article's suggestion that "the solution for [E3] next year can be summed up in one word (or is that two?): Las Vegas" is just about 1,000 New York minutes behind the times.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/23/nytimes-names-mass-effect-game-of-the-year-screws-up-details-ag/">NYTimes names Mass Effect game of the year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 23 Dec 2007 18:25:00 EST. Who doesn't love the great Satoru Iwata. He's a very kind man and a pleasure to be around (this blogger knows, he met him a couple years ago). Not only that, but he has a good mind for business, as he's managed to turn Nintendo into a crazy-rich company with the hottest console and handheld on the market. Certainly, he deserves this honor.<br /><br />He isn't the only person from Nintendo to be recognized, however. Next-Gen's list encompasses 25 people from the industry, and other notable Nintendo folk include <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=8336&amp;Itemid=2&amp;limit=1&amp;limitstart=2">George Harrison</a> and <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=8336&amp;Itemid=2&amp;limit=1&amp;limitstart=4">Yoshiaki Koizumi</a> (the director behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a>).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/20/iwata-is-named-person-of-the-year/">Iwata is named Person of the Year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 18:00:00 EST. We watched with rapt attention as the shaky-cam footage showed Mario and Luigi jumping from the Wii to the DS using a previously unknown, hidden galaxy and the DS' WiFi download capabilities. We were surprised to see low-resolution versions of Mario and Luigi running around low-resolution versions of familiar <em>Mario Galaxy</em> levels. We were shocked and hopeful when the video promised each DS star would be redeemable for 10 Wii shop points.<br /><br />We weren't ready to definitively declare the video real or fake at the time, but now, after some digging, we're ready to set the record straight on this hoax. With the end of 2007 approaching at near lightning-fast speed, we thought it would be nice to check out what you, the excellent reader, thought about the games of this year. First up, we have the obvious: first-party games. We have a good idea which game you're going to say, but in the name of healthy debate, check out all of the choices past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/18/best-of-2007-first-party-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of 2007: First-party games [update]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/18/best-of-2007-first-party-games/">Best of 2007: First-party games [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 11:15:00 EST. Coy or truly confused, Nintendo's maestro has disputed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/07/insomniac-flattered-by-mario-galaxy-concept/" target="_blank">Insomniac's cry for attention</a>, firmly denying that <em>Super Mario Galaxy's</em> spherical worlds were torn out of a page from the Sony developer's <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em> book. Miyamoto claims he and the gang were working to disprove the 'games are flat' theory back on N64, when Insomniac was merely taking its first baby steps into the industry (and, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/ludwig-kietzmann/" target="_blank">Ludwig</a>, years before <em>Sonic Adventure 2</em> pulled off 'the rounded level' - FYI). "I'm sorry but I have to admit that I've never seen the game in question," Miyamoto told <em>Official Nintendo Magazine UK</em> when questioned about<em> Ratchet &amp; Clank</em>, "Is it a PC game?"<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/miyamoto-ratchet-and-clank-who-lombax-what/">Miyamoto: 'Ratchet &amp; Clank' who? Apparently, folks in the UK don't have enough to bet on, so they turn to the gaming industry. Bookie Paddy Power is reporting that a lot of money is riding on what game emerges as the number one seller throughout this holiday season, with the total stake coming to about 11,000 GBP. That just boggles our mind.<br /><br />But, this isn't the first year this has been going down. They started accepting bets on gaming sales charts starting back in 2003, where it didn't receive many takers. Then, it had only seen 60 bets as which game would emerge on top, with this year seeing a whopping increase in popularity to 650 bets. Oh, and the favored game to come out on top is EA's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/04/revolutionary-speed-metal/">Need for Speed ProStreet</a>.<br /><br /></em>Current top odds are as follows:<br />
<ul>
    <li>8/11: <em>Need for Speed ProStreet</em></li>
    <li>2/1: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/marioandsonic"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</em></a></li>
    <li>5/1: <em>The Simpsons Game</em></li>

It's time for <em>Time</em> magazine and every other publication to start dropping their "top whatever" lists of the year. Taking the high honor this year from <em>Time</em> in video games for being "a pebble that has been rounded over the centuries by the gentle splashing of the ocean waves" is <em>Halo 3</em>. The magazine notes that Bungie has <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/top10/article/0,30583,1686204_1686305_1692236,00.html">refined</a> the series to the point of "pure, unadulterated gaming bliss," though we're a little lost when it calls <em>Halo</em> "graphically gorgeous." Still, it's <em>Time</em> -- we're <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/30/nytimes-ps3-is-299-gt5-best-seller-and-xbox-uses-cell-chip/">not expecting too much accuracy</a> from the mainstream press when it comes to video games lately.<br /><br />The next two spots on the <em>Time</em> list are held by <em>The Orange Box</em> and <em>Rock Band</em>, with both games getting their spots for presenting a bunch of things in one package. Rounding out the top five are <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> and <em>BioShock</em>. With any luck, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BioShock/">BioShock</a></em> won't be missing from many mainstream lists just because it came out more than a month ago. Heck, we're hoping it doesn't get forgotten on a lot of industry lists.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/11/time-magazine-names-halo-3-game-of-the-year/">Time magazine names Halo 3 game of the year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 12:15:00 EST. Wow. Just ... wow. That is an amazing piece of art and to think it is made from just paper. That's the kind of piece we would pay good money for, but lucky us we don't have to. Yes, we're still knee-deep in Mario's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy">latest outing</a>, despite a strong desire to pick up the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/03/wii-releases-for-the-week-of-december-3rd/">latest release</a> chock full of block-stacking. We're so busy what with blogging a lot that we've only had enough time to gather about 30 stars, maybe a few more. All of you out there in Reader Land probably could put us to shame with your own star count.<br /><br />As with every Friday, we're doomed to that question that must be asked: what are you playing? Are you going to be gathering up stars or will you be stacking blocks? Are you planning on playing something else?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/07/wrup-getting-every-last-star-edition/">WRUP: Getting every last star edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Dec 2007 12:00:00 EST. Coming in at the bottom of the list is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phantomhourglass"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em></a> on the DS. <br />We've managed to abstain from posting about video game-related <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cake">cakes</a> for a record seven weeks now -- mostly to avoid the hackneyed "The cake is a lie" comments that inevitably follow -- but we're breaking that streak today with this fondant-covered beauty. Chefs John Thai, Zack Ginies, and Lori Diaz baked this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/10/boo-mario-is-wonderful/">Boo Mario</a> together, sprinkling the plate with 1UPs before sending him out to save his imprisoned brother. Isn't he adorable? Shake your Wii remote and float past the post break to see more photos of this haunting dessert. Sharing is difficult. For those of us blessed with significant others who game, we know this all too well. When games become "ours" instead of "mine" or "yours" how do you go about sharing the gameplay? MTV copy editor Katie Byrne has been <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2007/11/28/mario-galaxy-conundrum-girlfriend-leaves-town-boyfriend-finishes-game-fair-or-foul/">thinking about this exact same problem</a>, specifically with reference to her and her boyfriend's shared save file on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-mario-galaxy"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a>.<br /><br />Although things start well with sharing the game -- switching off every other planet, and dividing play-time equally -- the plan goes a bit haywire when she visits home for Thanksgiving, and her beau just keeps on playing... and beats the game without her.<br /><br />Of course, we think the answer is obvious: separate save files for separate people. Single-player games are hard to turn into shared experiences, especially when both parties desire equal play-time. Read about Katie's upsetting experience on gaming with a significant other, and share your own success/horror stories below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/mtv-muses-on-gaming-with-girlfriends-boyfriends/">MTV muses on gaming with girlfriends/boyfriends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 08:30:00 EST. The man has some serious clout. And, for good reason, considering that just about every single thing we love about Nintendo can be directly attributed to his efforts at the company. This latest interview is the usual Miyamoto fare, where he comments on just how <em>utterly insane</em> he is (making your own puppets and playing with them?!).<br /><br />The piece focuses mainly on Mario (considering his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/meta-video-review-super-mario-galaxy/">recent</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/galaxy-back-down-to-2-in-all-time-rankings-we-burn-our-copies/">success</a>). His origins, as well as where he has come after all of these years, is discussed with the iconic figure. Oh, and he even takes some time to talk about the <em>horrible </em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108255/">movie</a> based (oh-so-loosely) on the gaming property. <br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/27/miyamoto-talks-mario/">Miyamoto talks Mario</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Nov 2007 18:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em>'s recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/18/super-mario-galaxy-sitting-pretty-as-the-1-ranked-game/">appearance</a> at the top of the Game Rankings <a href="http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp?rankings=y">all-time pile</a> has come to a swift end. Previously, the Mario romp had former champ <em>The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time</em> pinned against the ropes, thanks to an average review score that was just 0.3% higher than that of <em>Zelda</em>. But the fresh-faced pretender tired, and has now slipped back into second place, thanks to a recent flurry of new reviews. Will the plumber get another shot at the top spot? Barring a sudden deluge of perfect scores, probably not.<br /><br />On another note, it's nice to see the top three can all be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/23/confirmed-ocarina-of-time-on-the-vc-this-monday/">played</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/07/wii-warm-up-when-was-the-last-time-you-played-a-gamecube-game/">on</a> the Wii.<br /></div>

Nintendo stated <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> sold a half million units during its first week in the US. According to George "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/14/george-harrison-officially-retires-from-nintendo/">packing up his office</a>" Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vp of marketing, <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> has the strongest first week <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=30856">sales</a> of any Mario game ever.<br /><br />The critical <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/metareview-super-mario-galaxy-wii/">acclaim</a> would seem to say that <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> deserves all the sales it's getting. We also know that Galaxy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/super-mario-galaxy-sells-250k-first-week-in-japan/">sold 250k units</a> its first week in Japan. We apologize for the lack of quality in the above image, but when you take into account the news it brings, the image doesn't really matter. See, if you're the brave type to go out and about on Black Friday, then you might want to hit up your local Circuit City, where <em>Super Mario Galaxy </em>will be available for the discounted price of $34.99.<br /><br />Anyone plan on picking up a copy on the cheap? Maybe as a gift for a friend or loved one this holiday season? Or, maybe you haven't had the dough to get it yourself yet?<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone that sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/get-super-mario-galaxy-on-the-cheap-come-friday/">Get Super Mario Galaxy on the cheap come Friday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 21:00:00 EST. Ubisoft's parkour piece man sim, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/assassinscreed"><em>Assassin's Creed</em></a>, has scurried to the top of the UK sales charts, bumping off <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cod4"><em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</em></a> in the process. <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=30777">GamesIndustry.biz</a> reports that the Xbox 360 version gathered 67% of total sales, with the PlayStation 3 edition accounting for <strike>43%</strike> <strike>62%</strike> the rest. The speedy commercial success also made Altair's anachronistic adventure the fastest-selling new IP since 2002's <em>The Getaway</em>. <br /><br />In other<em> fastest-selling</em> title news, Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> managed a number five spot, flying off shelves faster than any other Wii title before it. But what of the games in-between the portly plumber and the murderous flag gatherer? The aforementioned <em>Call of Duty 4</em> wound up in second place, <em>The Simpsons Game</em> in third and <em>WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2008</em> in fourth.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/assassins-creed-tops-uk-charts/">Assassin's Creed tops UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 19:58:00 EST. <br />Just look at that. Isn't it glorious? What you're seeing above, folks, is a Wii-compatible <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/snes/">SNES</a> pad. Let's say that again, shall we? A <em>Wii-compatible SNES pad</em>. Don't get too worked up though, because unless you're a member of Club Nintendo in Japan, these are off-limits (not that using a SNES pad for your VC games is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/30/break-out-the-retro-folks/">impossible</a>, but still, this is the real deal).<br /><br />Yep, it's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/01/more-reasons-to-move-to-japan-you-can-buy-a-wii-for-2-17/">another</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/11/confirmed-smash-bros-brawl-delayed-in-u-s/">reason</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/vc-tuesday-best-week-ever/">we</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/japanese-vc-castlevania-is-the-famicom-disk-system-version/">really</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/18/dewys-adventure-japanese-preorder-bonus-too-cute-for-words/">should</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/17/capcom-wins-at-packaging/">move</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/30/japans-vc-announcements-for-april-boxers-ninjas-and-punkic-c/">to</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/japan/">Japan</a>. The time has come to crown the winner of our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/fanswag-win-a-copy-of-super-mario-galaxy/">latest giveaway</a> and hook them up with possibly the best game that ever existed. And, in the interest of <em>feeling good</em> and <em>being happy</em>, we'd like to say that we're glad to have had the opportunity to present one lucky reader with the title. Without further ado, let's hook up:
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.blogsmith.com/profile/1379605/">Josh</a>, who <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/fanswag-win-a-copy-of-super-mario-galaxy/16#c8694772">loves</a> the first level of <em>Super Mario World</em></li>

<div align="left">Here at Wii Fanboy, we like to think we offer ... <em>balanced, objective</em> coverage of Nintendo's <strike>world-beating</strike> home console. So, just as we'll happily scoff at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/meta-video-review-super-mario-galaxy/"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> bagging a ludicrous <a href="http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/nru7213maariogalaxyvg9.jpg">11/10</a> in one publication, we'll also take time out to archly snigger at the non-specialist press who just don't "get it."<br /></div>
</div>
<div align="left"><br />Like <em>Variety</em>, for instance. The entertainment industry newspaper has just posted its review of <em>Galaxy</em>, and it's not a favorable one. Naturally, we respect anybody's right to make negative comments about the title -- and plenty of reviewers have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/nega-review-super-mario-galaxy/">done just that</a> already -- but some of <em>Variety</em>'s observations do somewhat miss the point. <br /><br />Complaints about poor storytelling are weak enough, given that Mario games have <em>never </em>been designed with compelling narratives in mind. Elsewhere, the game is criticized for graphics that "simply aren't up to par with [those] on the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360," and is also described as "evidence of how bad the Wii is for third-person action games." Which sounds more like a broader statement about the Wii hardware, rather than the game itself.<br /><br />Still, before you begin punching out that rage-filled, vitriolic piece of hate mail <em>Variety</em>'s way, your bottom lip trembling and the tears barely dry on your cheeks, judge for yourself and give the review a proper read.<br /><br />And then mail it anyway.<br /><br />[Thanks, Bobby!]</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/stop-the-presses-love-for-galaxy-apparently-not-universal/">Stop the presses: Love for Galaxy apparently *not* universal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 16:00:00 EST. If you're the type of person who's forced to eat Ramen on a regular basis, you've likely been without the funds to engage in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy">Mario's latest</a>, and sure to be GOTY, adventure. It's OK, we've all fallen on our share of tough times. But, there is a light of hope at the end of that tunnel, as you still have less than 12 hours to enter at your chance to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/fanswag-win-a-copy-of-super-mario-galaxy/">win a copy</a> from us. That's right, in case you're snacking on those noodles under a rock, you might've noticed that we're giving a copy of the game away to one lucky reader.<br /><br />So, do yourself a favor and head on over to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/fanswag-win-a-copy-of-super-mario-galaxy/">the contest post</a> and follow the entry rules. One entry per person, though, so if you've already entered, then sit back, relax and think about how awesome it's going to be if you're that lucky somebody.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/reminder-your-last-chance-at-super-mario-galaxy/">Reminder: Your last chance at Super Mario Galaxy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 12:45:00 EST. During an encounter with Bowser in the game, one person found that they could knock Bowser off of the planet they were engaging him on, freaking out the camera and causing the game to halt all progress. Hopefully, this won't happen to us, because reloading the game during a fight with Bowser would be all kinds of annoying.<br /><br />Has anyone else encountered this problem?<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.crueltech.com/">Martin B</a>!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/super-mario-galaxy-glitch-forces-you-to-reload-game/">Super Mario Galaxy glitch forces you to reload game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 11:15:00 EST. A week later, it had <a href="http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39390&amp;console=&amp;maker=&amp;boxartz=1">added</a> 15,000 to that total. Hardly breathtaking figures in a nation with over <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2007/071025e.pdf#page=22">3.7 million Wiis</a> in its bedrooms and living rooms, and the game also <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=16079">struggled</a> to leave a mark in its homeland, where it is known as <em>Takarajima Z: Barbaros no Hihou</em>. There's no doubt about it: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/capcom/">Capcom</a>'s splendid piratey adventure has, as much as it saddens us, flopped.<br />
<br />
On the face of it, the game's commercial failure might seem odd. After all, <em>Zack &amp; Wiki</em> earned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/metareview-zack-and-wiki-quest-for-barbaros-treasure/">eye-catching scores</a> from a number of reviewers, while IGN's Matt Casamassina loved it so much, he <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/ign-conducting-the-zack-and-wiki-hype-train/">frothed and raved</a> about it non-stop for four months, before slapping a 90% on it come review time. Its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/friday-video-zack-wiki-and-hats/">bright, attractive visuals</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/zack-and-wiki-on-ice/">cute character design</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/a-20-minute-glimpse-into-zack-and-wiki/">puzzley action</a> were seemingly the perfect ingredients for massmarket appeal. Ultimately however, it sank faster than a holed galleon.<br />

We haven't been this depressed since James died in <em><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=-RX8rGHEpiI">Good Times</a></em>.<br /><br />We weren't the only ones who found ourselves sans <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a>, as many are reporting similar experiences with the toy superstore. Some locations only received enough copies to cover preorders, while others quickly sold out of their limited stock. In our case, as well as many of our reader's, we waited around for an hour with several dozen anxious customers before a manager announced that DHL hadn't made its delivery to the store. Hell was raised and magazine racks were knocked over, but to no avail.<br /><br />How did your Toys "R" Us experience go? Were you able to acquire <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em>, the free gift card, and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/08/it-mints-money/">preorder bonus coin</a> without any problems? Or did you mope around all night like we did, walking aimlessly from room to room, head hanging dejectedly while the <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=L5_Y6Nn-70E">sad music from <em>A Charlie Brown Christmas</em></a> played.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/no-super-mario-galaxy-r-us/">No Super Mario Galaxy 'R' Us</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 11:15:00 EST.
