Nintendo released what looks like a minor system update for the Wii U this week, and it's available to download now. Going by the patch notes, 3.0.1 U offers "further improvements to overall system stability and software compatibility."

We've downloaded the update and can't see any obvious changes. Maybe the Wii U just wanted to make itself heard over the clamor of a certain other box.
Wii U 3.0.1 system update released originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 May 2013 03:00:00 EST. According to Sony, the 4.4.1 update, which we've just downloaded, improves that age-old matter of system stability. We did think our PS3 was looking a bit unhinged this morning.
PS3 4.4.1 minor firmware update out today originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Apr 2013 03:30:00 EST. Chief among changes is the ability to add and drop shortcuts into folders, for obsessed organizers looking to clear the clutter on their home screen. Your customized layout can then be saved to the memory card.

Some videos can be viewed in the browser with v2.1, though a memory card is required for this feature - only certain videos supported. Email has been tweaked too, and PS Plus members can update PlayStation Mobile software and upload game save data automatically to the cloud through 3G. Finally, a new mute feature in v2.1 lets you automatically silence your PS Vita speakers and pause your music when a headset isn't in use.
PS Vita v2.1 system update cleans up the home screen originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Apr 2013 20:50:00 EST. While not a drastic change in the 3DS user experience, this firmware does offer a few tweaks that sound useful.

For example, you won't have to exit the eShop anymore for "Download Later" to work. Just close the 3DS and downloading begins. You can also download game updates in the background. The update also makes the save data transfer tool available, so you can move save data from a packaged version of a game to the eShop version (but not back!) The firmware also makes unnamed "further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments."

Apparently, however, Japanese users have been experiencing trouble with the firmware update. We're checking with Nintendo of America to see if the same error messages are in danger of occurring here.

Update: Nintendo of America acknowledged the issue. If an error message prevents you from updating, turn the 3DS off, then turn it back on, while holding the L, R, A, and Up buttons.
3DS firmware update adds save transfers, streamlines 'download later' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST. That's our impression of the Wii U's user interface, and what you have to do to improve it. Speaking with Time, Shigeru Miyamoto said that "We think that by this summer, the system is going to be very much improved over how it's performing currently." He noted that interactions between various applications are more easily tested in the wild, "to understand how they're using those features and what they're doing as they're switching between them."

A system update based on Nintendo's observations of user behavior and Wii U performance is due this spring. "What we want to do is make sure that when we release it, that we address as many of the different opinions about how people would like to see the system improve as we can at once. We hope to cover a wide range of requests while simultaneously ensuring it's a very stable update to the system."

On its information page for the 105-3102 error code that has hit Japan, Nintendo says an update is due in April. Whether the update contains these upcoming UI fixes, or is just focused on fixing the error, is unclear. A new firmware update is available now. "Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience," Nintendo notes.

Start downloading it now. "The new system update may take an extended amount of time to download," Nintendo says on its support site. "Depending on the speed of the Internet connection used, it could take an hour or more to download and install, even if you have already downloaded the previous update. Please be patient." Fritz says he unplugged his Wii U 15 minutes into the update, when the progress bar said it would take two hours to finish, and his console is now completely busted. There was no "cancel" option, Fritz says.

A few people on Twitter have chimed in with their own update horror stories, with one saying the connection timed out during the update and another claiming Nintendo support told him to unplug the Wii U for 15 seconds, both scenarios ending with bricks. The Wii U's sizable update will take a while to process, of course expanding the chances of something going wrong. This type of hack isn't new, and previously Sony has been able to update its firmware to sufficiently quell the hackers' reach. Following the custom firmware launch yesterday, however, was the release of the PlayStation 3's LV0 keys.

In theory, the LV0 decryption keys make is easy to decode any system update to the PlayStation 3, Eurogamer writes. The LV0 keys allow PS3 firmware to be decrypted on PC, and then re-encrypted with firmware 3.55 keys to run on hacked consoles.

A group called "The Three Muskateers" takes responsibility for the LV0 keys, but not the leak itself. That's all thanks to a new Chinese hacking group, "BlueDiskCFW," who planned to release and charge for custom firmware updates using The Three Muskateers' LV0 keys. To stop BlueDiskCFW from profiting off the keys, the Muskateers released them.

"You can be sure that if it wouldn't have been for this leak, this key would never have seen the light of day," The Three Muskateers write in a statement. "Only the fear of our work being used by others to make money out of it has forced us to release this now."

Read the complete statement from The Three Muskateers, with the keys edited out, below.
Continue reading Rumor: PS3 hacked yet again, this time it might be for keeps

Rumor: PS3 hacked yet again, this time it might be for keeps originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 21:15:00 EST. Well, you can blame yesterday's stealthy system update, which has wreaked havoc with some wireless controllers - specifically, the TurboFire 2, WildFire 2, EVO line and the Super Sports 3X steering wheel peripheral.

Right now, there is a fix, but it's complicated. You'll have to download a software update made specifically for your hardware, which you can find here. Microsoft doesn't officially support your Datel controller, after all - and it's not like the two are best pals.
It's not your Datel controller, it's your Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Jun 2012 21:45:00 EST. More exciting than the hullabaloo surrounding its release: firmware 1.66 reportedly enables PlayStation Minis support for PlayStation Plus users on the Vita. Moreover, some users are saying that if you want to snag older free Minis that you got with your subscription, you're able to delete the non-functioning existing version and replace it with a fresh download.

We've dropped Sony's list of updates in the firmware just below the break, should you wish to learn more about its less-than-thrilling specifics. Sony doesn't note the Minis fix, but we've followed up for clarity's sake.
Continue reading PS Vita 1.66 update now live, reportedly with a fix for PS Minis support

PS Vita 1.66 update now live, reportedly with a fix for PS Minis support originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 16:30:00 EST. Among those features are standards like GPS tracking via a newly added Maps application, the ability to capture video, and the release of a support application for Mac OS X. It can also now serve mixed vanilla/chocolate froyo swirl. Finally!

Additionally, the update will banish mentions of the the phrase "PlayStation Network" from various services and replace it with the newly renamed "Sony Entertainment Network" branding. Considering that the PSP is still supported by Sony but has yet to receive any form of Mac support for content management, we're gonna go ahead and call this a big step forward.
PlayStation Vita's Feb. 8 update adds video capture, OS X support, GPS tracking originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 08:00:00 EST. After rubbing the sleep out of our eyes this morning and booting up the ol' Xbox 360, we were just as surprised as you were to see a serious looking system update. You know, the kind of system update that requires a special install window after rebooting the console? That one.
As Major Nelson informs us, the update is little more than "general system maintenance," and "no new features" (his emphasis) will pop up after updating. Well, boogie to that! Perhaps in late November, then?
PSA: No, that Xbox 360 system update doesn't contain the new Dash originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 10:30:00 EST. If you're anything like us, you've been snapping 3D photos since day one on your Nintendo 3DS. We've got some pretty cramped up pointer fingers as a result, but that's all going to change come November. During Nintendo's pre-TGS 2011 press conference, company prez Satoru Iwata announced that the 3DS will get a system update this November that adds "3D video capture," among other things.

What "other things," you ask? Nintendo isn't saying just yet, though the company's American Twitter account specifically notes the update will add "more content to StreetPass Mii Plaza." So, uh, hats? Hats!
Nintendo planning November system update for 3DS, adding 3D video capture originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Sep 2011 06:02:00 EST. Microsoft will push out an update for the Xbox 360 tomorrow, according to Major Nelson. Other than the few moments you'll have to wait while your 360 downloads the patch, installs it and then restarts, the change likely won't affect you in the least. As Major Nelson says, "there are no new features that will show up once your system has been updated," as the update is simply to set up some background technology for further improvements later this year.

So that's kind of boring. We almost wish he'd gone ahead and made something up: A patch that "improved the awesomeness of your Xbox Console by an estimated 3000%" would have been much more interesting than this one.
PSA: Xbox 360 update out tomorrow, no immediate features added originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 20:00:00 EST. Hey, just a reminder: The eShop is now available on 3DS. We were going to write something clever about it, but we're too tired. So there.

... What? You don't know how to get the update? OK, fine:

1. Click "System Settings"
2. Click "Other Settings"
3. Tap the right arrow three times until you're on the last screen
4. Click "System Update"

Got it? Great. We're going to bed.
PSA: The Nintendo eShop is live originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 01:00:00 EST. The alt-rockers of OK Go have made a career of staging elaborate videos to garner attention for their music, but their new stunt may be the oddest yet: They're sneaking into 3DS systems. That's right, updating your 3DS on Sunday will beam OK Go's 3D video "White Knuckles" right to your home screen.

The video will be deleted with the following update, so savor its three-dimensional dog-training amusements while you can. If you want a preview, you can watch the video in stupid, revolting 2D after the break.

Side note: Our friends with Japanese 3DS systems got a similar update, but with a video of Koji Kondo and some other Nintendo folks playing the Super Mario theme. Feel free to argue about who's getting the better end of that deal.
Continue reading 3DS update adds 3D OK Go video to home screen

3DS update adds 3D OK Go video to home screen originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 09:55:00 EST. In addition to select, hand-picked Game Boy and Game Boy Color classics, the 3DS's Virtual Console will also play host to titles from two slightly surprising sources: The Sega Game Gear and TurboGraphx-16 handhelds. No specific entries from the two devices were named during Reggie Fils-Aime's presentation at Nintendo's GDC keynote today -- though we've got our fingers crossed for the speedy arrival of Sonic Chaos.

Fils-Aime also confirmed the late May arrival of the Virtual Console via a system update, which wiill also introduce a handful of the device's other online features, including: DSiWare (and the ability to transfer DSiWare games from a DSi or DSi XL), the web browser and eShop. It's likely to be the same update that will add Netflix and some 3D video features, too.
3DS Virtual Console getting Game Gear and TurboGraphx-16 games, coming late May originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 13:04:00 EST. It's rare for a company to announce a firmware update that removes functionality from a product, but that's exactly what Sony is doing with the upcoming release of PS3 firmware update 3.21 on April 1st. The rarely utilized, but nonetheless useful, ability to install another operating system (Linux) on the PS3 will be removed in the upcoming system software revision, a feature that was already removed in the PS3 Slim. SCEA's Patrick Seybold explains that the removal of said functionality is necessary "due to security concerns ... [and] will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system."

This move may be a response to recent claims that the PS3 has been "hacked." The language used in Seybold's post reminds us of another Sony platform that's been plagued by rampant piracy: the PSP. While the move seems to be a preventative measure on Sony's part, the early response to the removal of Linux support has been passionately negative. Undoubtedly, there will be few that will be genuinely inconvenienced by this decision. However, the rest of us have good reason for some dread: who can look forward to the prospect of downloading and installing a firmware update that offers no added functionality?
Many readers have been sending tips to Joystiq about a new PS3 firmware update. In actuality, this is not a new update at all. Firmware 3.15 was released on December 9th and introduced the ability to play PSP Minis on the PS3. While this update was originally optional, the powers-that-be at Sony are now making it a mandatory update. "We have found out that users will not be able to acquire trophies on some game titles," we were told by a SCEE representative. "Users can avoid this problem by updating the PS3 system to firmware 3.15 and therefore we've made it a mandatory update. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate for your understanding and continued support."
Just like the previous Wii System Update, 4.2 offers little in the way of surprises or features and mainly provides "behind-the-scene fixes," designed to "improve the overall system performance." The update also removes unauthorized save data (it wouldn't be a real update otherwise!), so if you've been using things like the Homebrew channel, expect to be annoyed for the few minutes it takes the community to implement a workaround.
Wii System Update 4.2 now live originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 08:45:00 EST. If you're playing hooky from work or school today to get in some quality time with Halo 3: ODST, you know that a mandatory system update is putting a pause on your action. Major Nelson reports that the new system update doesn't bring any immediate changes to the Dashboard and only prepares some backend support for the upcoming additions of Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm to Xbox Live later this year.

Oh, and if you do decide to link up your Twitter and Facebook accounts to your Xbox 360 when that update launches, be careful about faking sick when the next Halo rolls out. In typical fashion, the latest Wii Menu update (released only seven days ago) was designed to render the Twilight Hack useless. Also in typical fashion, it's already been beaten, proving yet again that you can't keep a good hack down.

While some in the homebrew community predicted that the 3.4 update would sound the death knell for the Twilight Hack, Team Twiizers has now written and released new, Wii Menu 3.4-compatible code (though as usual, updating your Wii isn't recommended unless it's an absolute must).

HackMii has a link to the new file and all necessary instructions, so let the brewing of homes recommence!

Aside from augmenting the Nintendo User Agreement, the new system update will also "check for and automatically remove" all "unauthorized modifications to save files." Guess what, homebrew fans? The party is <strike>over </strike><strike>forever</strike> put on hold for the time being.

This is basically all of the info we have right now, but we're sure the homebrew community will step up soon with a response to this. You know how they hate it when Nintendo tries to stop them from running their 'brew.

Keep an eye on Wii Fanboy for more on this as it's made available.
Nintendo unleashes Wii Menu 3.4, updates ToS and removes save files originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 23:40:00 EST. Well, that was fast. That recent update that wouldn't allow users to install the Homebrew Channel? It's been bested, as the Homebrew Channel beta9 has been released. Among working with the latest update, beta9 also brings the following fixes to the table:

Installer / updater now works with the October 23 update

SDHC support

REALLY fixed the memcard bug

Installer now picks newest sane IOS, fixes some beta8 regressions

Added a reload button (for SD card changes)

Return to system menu skips warning

Fixed some graphical glitches

Saner XML load code

Many fixes to underlying stuff in the newer libogc

The NXE (New Xbox Experience) is the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update, first revealed to gamers at E3 2008. Designed to be usable and intuitive for everyone under your roof regardless of gaming cred, the NXE is a complete revamp of the Xbox 360 dash we know and love. Still on the fence about the new update? Xbox.com now sports an interactive preview of the New Xbox Experience the way it will be presented when it finally launches later this year. Also you should remember that Xbox Live will be down for 24-hours beginning at 12:01AM PT on September 29 to prepare for the service update -- meaning the new dashboard isn't going to be made available just yet.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Xbox.com sports interactive dashboard preview, the NXE originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Sep 2008 17:00:00 EST.
Update: To clarify, the Wii Shop Channel update applies to Wiis in North America, as upon checking our own Shop Channel, we found the above screen. It just so happens a European stumbled upon it.

As you all know, we're getting set to get Wii Ware up and running on our Wiis. Upon that beautiful day, in which we're sure the sun will shine through the clouds and engulf us all in warm rays of light, many Wii owners will be trying to duck and dodge all of that sunshine while downloading games through Wii Ware. Those of us in North America won't have to flee for our lives from the sun until May.

But we digress. European Wii owners will likely find out (either through reading this or by checking their Wii) that the Wii Shop Channel requires an update. And with Wii Ware on the horizon, it's likely this update is in some way a part of that. Actually, forum-goers at NeoGAF report that Nintendo confirms it's in preparation for the launch of Wii Ware. Others even commented about a "guide-thing in the lower right corner of the shop."
Wii Shop update makes way for Wii Ware [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Mar 2008 17:25:00 EST.
