Sex sells, and nobody knows that more than the folks at D3 Publisher and Playboy, who have just teamed up to promote the mag's review of Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad -- complete with some pictures of the game's lead heroine, Aya, in the buff. You're going to click over for the article, right? It's a pretty good review. We've read it. Yesterday's Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers video left out one important component of the experience: Reiko, the cloned fighter sent out to capture samples of Aya and Saki's blood. Well, it also left out Misery, but we expect to see her soon. That's right, in case you had forgotten, Tamsoft's super-bloody hack-and-slash has another character who is -- get this -- a scantily-clad young woman. In this game? Really? What a departure! And here she is (after the break) in fenced-off areas slashing a bunch of zombies with a sword. It's like a totally different game.

We might be doing Reiko's outfit a disservice by calling it a catsuit. Catsuits are demure next to her little ensemble, which is basically the front of a vest and a set of skintight chaps, with some fishnet underneath.

We kind of can't believe that Onechanbara is really coming out on February 10. We've been talking about this silly game since September 2007!

Continue reading Onechanbara: Leather Catsuit Zombie Slayers

Onechanbara: Leather Catsuit Zombie Slayers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. Following the recent Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers trailers, we feel obligated to warn you that the one after the post break contains real gameplay footage. If you came in hoping for more oatmeal-faced zombie analogues mugging in pseudo-sitcom vignettes, you will be disappointed. However, those of you who wanted to see bikini-clad ladies cleanly slicing through hundreds and hundreds of zombies will be well-served by this surprisingly excellent-looking trailer. And if you want more footage, IGN has a few new videos as well.

We don't know which hypothetical group of Onechanbara fans would be considered weirder. We won't make any judgments, in any case. This is a safe place to like Onechanbara.

[Thanks, yanya!]

Continue reading Onechanbara video features Bikini Zombie Slaying for once

Onechanbara video features Bikini Zombie Slaying for once originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 15:00:00 EST. Trailers tend to be totally dry affairs stitched together from in-game CG and occasional gameplay, but D3 decided to indulge in ridiculous skits set in a world where zombies live alongside humans, and suffer discrimination (or worse) just for <strike>eating people</strike> being different.

Did you find the ads funny?
At the risk of recycling the same joke a little too often, D3 has pressed on with its range of live-action viral videos promoting Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers. Today's pop culture-spoofing clip tells the tale of zombie rap duo "Rest-n-Peace" bemoaning the alleged unwillingness of Asian girls to sleep around. So yes: although tongue-in-cheek, this could be deemed fairly offensive.

That's why we're giving you fair warning now: if you thought the most recent videos in this series were a bit close to the bone, you're probably going to find the clip past the break more distasteful. The amount of female flesh on display here means this is NSFW -- unless you have an incredibly tolerant, slightly pervy boss.

Continue reading Onechanbara takes to the streets

Onechanbara takes to the streets originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Jan 2009 18:15:00 EST. Okay, we aren't sure who D3 is after with these live-action Onechanbara ads. They're corny, but at the same time approach an uncomfortable level of (implied) lasciviousness. Well, we say we aren't sure, but we have a pretty good idea. We've seen enough Spike TV to know how companies think they should advertise to dudes. It's kind of a good thing for them we're already interested in Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers.

The newest trailer seems to violate the rules of the world set up in the previous trailers. In other ads, zombies live normal lives and act pretty much like people, but humans hate them anyway. In this trailer ... the humans don't really seem to hate him. And that's the most analysis anyone will ever apply to these ads! Enjoy after the break.

We're glad to see D3 getting so much mileage out of that one fake arm, by the way.

Onechanbara: the sitcom originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 13:40:00 EST. Did you like the live-action Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers "Birthday Party" trailer? Maybe you found the silly vignette and its broad acting amusing, or, perhaps, charming? We kind of found its rough edges refreshing as a counterpoint to most superslick advertising. If you found something to enjoy in that previous trailer, then feel free to proceed past the post break for the latest Onechanbara-inspired skit by D3.

If you groaned, zombie-style, at that previous trailer, you're probably not going to like this one either. There's a bit of gameplay footage at the end, but there's a lot of silliness before that.

Continue reading Onechanbara trailer delivered in 30 minutes or it's free

Onechanbara trailer delivered in 30 minutes or it's free originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Jan 2009 18:22:00 EST. According to a Siliconera interview with D3 Publisher's Oohashi Toshiro, the US release of Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers will be more than the simple addition of campy English dialogue and text. Specifically, "... the graphics are now in higher resolution in comparison to the Japanese version so we were able to implement and present something that is more visually appealing."

We knew (from another Siliconera interview!) that D3 wanted to put new material into the US version, but this is a global change to the existing content. We continue to be absolutely shocked that D3 is putting so much care into the US release of a notoriously lo-fi action game series. Maybe it'll improve upon the series' reputation! Well, as much as one can raise the reputation of a game series about bikini-clad girls getting covered in zombie blood.

Onechanbara: better-looking Bikini Zombie Slayers for North America originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 10:00:00 EST.
As happens each month, some of the more interesting tidbits from the holiday issue of Nintendo Power have been transcribed by the tireless folks at Aeropause.

The most eye-catching news, for us? A novel and particularly painful-sounding attack in Platinum Games' MadWorld. According to the magazine, you'll be able to lodge "a trumpet where the sun don't shine, leaving the unfortunate fellow to stagger around as he inadvertently toots the horn." Awe. Some. What's a trumpet doing lying around on the set of a futuristic game show about death and wanton bloodletting? Heck, don't ask, just shove.

Other worthy factoids drawn from the mag deal with how No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda relaxes (by playing Burnout Paradise), and the news that Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers will have a two-player splitscreen mode. EX-TERM-IN-ATE! EX-TERM-IN-ATE! Wait, no, those are the other ones. But whatever. The point is: after hearing nothing about Space Invaders Get Even! for months, the game has randomly appeared on the European and Australian Wii Shops. We are unashamedly jigging with joy as we type this. And the extra-terrestial goodness doesn't stop there, for Alien Crush Returns has also joined the line-up. Needless to say, we wholeheartedly welcome our new rulers (of all our spare time).

The other game is Brain Challenge. Sorry, Brain Challenge.
We've seen plenty of Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers' main characters, Aya and Saki -- perhaps a little too much, in terms of modesty! Tamsoft's embarrassing action-horror game features two more playable characters, both of whom have their own unique idea of appropriate zombie hunting attire.

Reiko is one of many clones of the "Original Reiko" created by some unspecified agency of SCIENCE!! She is ordered to take a sample of Aya and Saki's blood (which apparently is the cause of their occasional bouts of blinding rage). Misery also wants the sisters' blood, but to make herself stronger. Our suggestion for increasing combat effectiveness: the crazy chain sword is a good start, but we'd bring some shoes into battle.

Onechanbara's other Zombie Slayers originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 11:55:00 EST. I've been a huge fan of Naxat Soft's Alien Crush and other Crush games since they came out. It's no exaggeration to say that the availability of Alien Crush on the Virtual Console factored into my decision to purchase a Wii. When Hudson revealed plans for a 3D WiiWare update of Alien Crush, it definitely captured my attention.

Alien Crush Returns, it turns out, is much more than an update: it is a direct sequel to Alien Crush, and a very different game. While the new version doesn't outshine the original, there's certainly more of it. And it finally brings online leaderboards to the series -- along with direct online competition!
Finding a way to combine pinball and H.R. Giger, Alien Crush Returns (Hudson Entertainment, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points) is now available on WiiWare. The remake to 1988's Alien Crush has you facing off against insectoid monsters from outer space, using only your flippers and a large metallic sphere. Sonic Spinball would be proud.

For the more faint of heart, this week also introduces to WiiWare Home Sweet Home (Big Blue Bubble Inc., 1 player, 1000 Wii Points), based on the casual PC title. It's all about bringing out the aspiring interior designer inside you, for when you want to live vicariously through the TV instead of getting off the couch to redecorate your actual living room.

If the latest trailer for the upcoming zombie-slayer Onechanbara proves anything it's that sometimes shopping can go terribly wrong. Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad lands on the Xbox 360 in mid-December from publisher D3 and developer Tamsoft, the team behind ... uh, well we can't think of anything you'd really know or care about. Toshinden, maybe? But hey, it's a good looking woman wearing a bikini and slaying countless zombies. Basically, the most realistic game ever conceived.
Onechanbara trailer reveals women hate zombies originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 13:00:00 EST. For us, then, it just wouldn't feel like Halloween unless we were inundated with trailers and ads for horror games -- and we think campy ones like Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers fit the season best of all.

Yes, this video is extraordinarily silly ... but it's for Onechanbara. That's pretty much the idea. And the developers behind Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers know it, as their game features attractive ladies in sexy outfits. There's also something else in the game that rivals the popularity of hot chicks: lots and lots of carnage. Plus, there're zombies. And extras! There's a lot in this package, that's for sure.

This latest trailer for the game takes some CG cutscenes from the game and combines them into one new trailer. With a steamy shower scene, you'll also see some pre-rendered combat, as well as some sunglasses-wearing guy who likes to punch girls in the stomach. You're not supposed to hit a lady ...

Who's anxious to slice down some zombies with us in February?

New Bikini Zombie Slayers footage is light on the bikinis, zombies, slaying originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Oct 2008 08:56:00 EST. It was the terrible 3D fighter that launched with the system and featured in its early advertising; for a while, we all managed to convince ourselves that it was good and an appropriate showcase for the system.

Takara Tomy has decided to resurrect the franchise on the Wii, or possibly to use the Toshinden name as a selling point for a new fighter. Other than being a 3D fighting game, there doesn't seem to be too much in common. The characters all look new, anyway. Not that changing Toshinden is necessarily a bad thing.
Toshinden's back for some reason originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 13:38:00 EST. Ever since it was revealed that D3 would bring Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers to the Wii, we've been pumped to play it. That is mainly due to the game being all about a hot chick killing zombies while barely clothed. It's basically a recipe for success. But what of this Wii port? What features can we look forward to? Some things were hinted at back at E3, but we never got definitive word. That is, until now.

D3 has confirmed that the game will feature co-op play, complete with unique characters with their own individual weapons and combos, so you can feel awkward in front of a friend when you're getting weird sensations from a scantily-clad babe destroying screens full of zombies in showers of blood. Aside from the co-op, the roster of game modes has been expanded to include Free Play Mode, Survival Mode and Quest Mode, in addition to the main Story mode.

With these new features, the game sounds better than ever. Any of you excited for what is sure to be some great mindless slaughter?

[Via Go Nintendo]
New details drop for Onechanbara port originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Sep 2008 19:20:00 EST. If you thought Hudson was done announcing WiiWare games, you were dead wrong. In fact, Bomberman Blast was just a warmup for the real WiiWare announcement, which we all knew was coming, but we're elated to see: Alien Crush Returns is coming to North America! A few new screens came with the announcement, which you can find in our gallery. Chris Kohler's impressions of today's Japanese release suggest that this news is, in fact, a good thing.

According to the press release, "Alien Crush Returns is the only pinball game for WiiWare that lets gamers compete head to head online." It also happens to be the only pinball game for WiiWare. As with Bomberman Blast (and Star Soldier R), Hudson will host periodic online tournaments, starting with one near the unspecified launch period.
Nintendo's WiiWare service has apparently sparked a renewed interest in developing games with one pixelated foot rooted in the past. Following both Capcom and Konami's head start, Hudson has likewise decided to dip into its archives, returning with news to bring the Wii-make of its TurboGrafx-16 sci-fi pinball game, Alien Crush, to North America.

Descriptively titled Alien Crush Returns, the download was released today in Japan and is based on the 1988 classic, which itself is available on WiiWare's sister service. While a date for the game's North American debut has not yet been announced, Hudson notes the follow-up will again be played across two screens and an unspecified number of boards, each no doubt filled with galactic baddies with a lust for silver balls. Most interesting, however, is news that Alien Crush Returns will support two-player online play as well as include online leader boards, with Hudson promising multiple online tournaments for the pinball-obsessed to throw down with their E.T. crushing skills.
Just one day before the Japanese release of Hudson's Alien Crush Returns, we're treated to new screens of the remake/sequel of the glorious Turbografx-16 pinball game. The one above appears to be one of the new boss levels (briefly seen in the trailer), in which you fire pinballs at a grotesque alien rictus.

Also highlighted: the two-player versus mode -- which is based on score and time, as far as we can tell, and not simultaneous multiplayer, but we doubt it, because that sounds amazingly insane -- interfering with each other's shots, sharing flippers, and generally just having a frustrating old time.

Just knowing that a new Crush pinball game is being released tomorrow somewhere makes the world seem like a happier, warmer place.

PAL regions got the first official release of the amazing pinball game Alien Crush just last year via the Virtual Console. According to the OFLC, the new WiiWare version is Australia-bound as well. Not to be too presumptuous, but this suggests a worldwide release as well. We never doubted that Hudson would make Alien Crush Returns available around the world, but it's nice to have some evidence.

Also rated: Tetris Party and something called Pit Crew Panic, another Hudson Wii game. We have no idea what that is -- some kind of racing-related thing, sure, but ... could it really be a whole game about replacing tires and such?
It was pretty clear during D3's E3 presentations of Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers that the company wants to make some changes to the original Japanese game, because they didn't let us play the retail Japanese copy used as a display, suggesting that they plan to mess with the controls. Also they told us that they were going to add stuff.

Siliconera got an even better idea of the kinds of additions D3 is thinking of. According to their talk with D3, new stages and enemies not found in Onechanbara R, as well as other characters from the Onechanbara series, may make their way into the new game. More work than is absolutely necessary going into an Onechanbara game? What a strange time we live in.

D3 wants to add extra spice to Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jul 2008 10:30:00 EST. If there's one essential zombie-killing accessory that's often overlooked in survival guides, it's the feather boa. If you don't look good, you won't feel good, and if you don't feel good, you're not kicking a bunch of zombie ass. You can't argue with that; that's science. That's why Onechanbara is awesome: it represents a fusion of high fashion aesthetics and a dedication to efficient killing ... and it's all coming to you at a budget price. There's nothing more you can ask for, except screenshots, and hey! They're right here.

E308: Dress up with Onechanbara originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 21:00:00 EST.
D3 showed off an early version of Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers in their conference room. And by "early version of Bikini Zombie Slayers," I mean "final Japanese version of Onechanbara Revolution." The retail game. Even so, I wasn't allowed to play it! Isn't that weird? And not in the funny, campy way that Onechanbara is usually weird.

I did get to watch the game in motion, and found the visual upgrade over the PS2 version impressive. Apparently the price is getting a downgrade from the Japanese release: the D3 rep said that while they had yet to set a price point, it'll be marketed as a budget game.

D3 also had the costumes from the Onechanbara movie in their booth -- all four square inches or so of costume. The WiiWare sequel to Alien Crush is officially the hottest thing ever, even though we're not entirely keen on the new 3D look -- and even though we prefer Devil's Crush to Alien Crush. Among the many reasons it's super hot (reason the first: DUDE ALIEN CRUSH RETURNS) are the new ball upgrades. Reverse Ball allows you to instantly send the ball back the way it was moving. Split Ball enables multiball on the field. Boost Ball boosts the speed of the ball.

Strangely, these new "Action Balls" will be available as DLC. We don't know if they're otherwise unlockable, or if they'll be paid DLC or just time-released. They aren't the only Crush DLC, either -- new stages for the game's Story Mode will be available as downloads.
Hudson has just launched the official Japanese site for upcoming WiiWare title, Alien Crush Returns. Within the site, you'll find a lot of content, including a nice video, along with several screens. Also, if you have some knowledge on translating Japanese, you can find some nice control explanations right here. Overall, it's a pretty neat site that you should check out. Be sure to hit up our gallery below, as well.
We've been hoping for a localized version of Oneechanbara Revolution, the motion-controlled Wii entry in Tamsoft's once-budget horror action franchise, since D3 Publisher revealed the game at last year's Tokyo Game Show. The company just announced that we're getting our wish: the series is headed to the U.S. for the first time, under the title Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers.

Players will control one of two sisters, Aya and Saki, who slice up piles and piles of zombies, stopping only to shake the tainted blood off of their swords (lest they become slower and get stuck in zombies more often). Getting blood on the girls, however, triggers a "Rage Mode" in which Aya and Saki attack with increased speed and strength, while their health decreases.

After No More Heroes, we have been slavering for some more sword-based action. Now we're looking forward to E3.
D3 bringing sex and violence to the U.S. with Onechanbara originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 08:45:00 EST. It's a big genre, but we think we can say this with some certainty.

Even so, this latest trailer raises some concerns about the movie. Specifically, why the CG blood? It would actually cost more than the normal goop used in movies, and the producers didn't quite spend enough to ensure that it didn't totally look ridiculous. Oh, that reminds us -- WARNING: This video features blood, sort of, and may not be suitable for children sensitive to the sight of computer-generated Jell-O.

[Thanks, zizzy!]
Oneechanbara movie uses its budget the wrong way originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 14:15:00 EST. Look at that. Look at it. That is a screenshot of a new Alien Crush game. Even if it is a little ugly, it's the most beautiful thing ever. If we didn't already have a Wii, we'd be camping out for one right now based on this alone -- seriously. And it's WiiWare! With online leaderboards! (Online leaderboards for Alien Crush? Where would you get an idea like that?) Just like with the Virtual Console, Hudson has proven that they know how to support a download service. Alien Crush is coming out in Japan in August, and it had better come out worldwide near that time. Including the stuff shown today (and Star Soldier R), Hudson has ten WiiWare titles planned.

This AMAZING NEWS was revealed at a Hudson event in a Brazilian restaurant in Shibuya, along with Blue Oasis, a virtual fish-tank type game that interacts with the Forecast Channel. It'll be out sometime this year. Hit the break for screens, as well as some new Tetris and Bomberman images!
Dengeki had a playtesting session of D3's Oneechanbara Revolution, and from what we can gather based on automatic translations, they quite enjoyed the (costumes in the) game. They also seemed to think that the new controls, while requiring a bit of practice, work out well for the action game and create an enjoyable flow. They didn't think it was awful, which is news for the series.

While the idea of learning controls seems antithetical to the Wii ideal, at least they're fun. Oneechanbara Revolution includes a practice mode in which you can just slice up endless hordes of zombies, in order to facilitate the learning process.

Along with the English-unfriendly impressions, there is a nice set of new screenshots. We're fascinated by whatever that on-screen display is in the practice mode.
Oneechanbara: so not-awful it's Revolutionary originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 09:45:00 EST. In this video for the new Oneechanbara Wii game, Official Aya Model Erina demonstrates the Wii controls for the bloody game. Also she wears her Aya outfit. Obviously, right?

Oneechanbara's controls are much more motion-y than No More Heroes'. You're really (sort of) swinging your sword around and cutting through thousands of zombies. Surprisingly, while we totally think No More Heroes balances button-mashing and waving around perfectly, all the waggling in this looks fun and exciting. We're probably only swayed a little bit by the fact that it's being shown off by a bikini-clad model!

While you're in an Oneechanbara mood, check out some new screens at the link. They're screens of the game, by the way.
Friday Video: Erina collects another paycheck originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 20:00:00 EST. It seems that a significant portion of any Oneechanbara game's budget is earmarked for hiring gravure idol Erina to dress up like Aya for publicity events. Judging by the game, a rather large percentage goes to the Aya Model Fund. This time, to promote the February 7th release of Oneechanbara Revolution, Aya stopped by Dengeki's offices, along with a dude in half-assed zombie makeup, to pantomime slashing up the website's staff. The two also made similar stops at GAME Watch and Famitsu, as well as other publications, no doubt.

We'd make a joke here about threatening violence in retaliation against negative reviews, but we're pretty sure that these websites will find a way to review the game harshly, if they end up reviewing it.

Oneechanbara takes the Revolution on the road originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jan 2008 12:45:00 EST.
An exciting innovation from D3 can be found on the Oneechanbara Revolution website: screenshots that take a really damn long time to load! Also they move or something. Apparently the "Revolution" in the game's title refers to the range of movement in the promotional screens.

D3 has updated the website with two "3D Screenshots" -- images whose perspective can be changed by moving the mouse, allowing for a 3D view of the game. It's basically like those QTVR panoramas that, five years ago, everybody thought would be important right now. Except important, because they're about video games.

Of course, we hate to say it, but Oneechanbara isn't necessarily the best subject for high-tech screenshot technology. From pretty much any angle, all there is to see is gooey blood and zombie chunks.

[Via Siliconera]
Oneechanbara Screenshot Revolution originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 10:30:00 EST. Well, actually, we suspected that it wouldn't be, since Oneechanbara VorteX on the Xbox 360 had crossed the full-price barrier, and since a series of Simple Wii games had been announced independent of this new Oneechanbara.

But we continued to hope. We can forgive a repetitive, low-tech game for the right price, especially if it's in the action genre we crave. However, at full price we find it harder to overlook the obvious issues with the game (not that it matters, since it's a Japan-only release). We now have extremely definitive proof that Oneechanbara Revolution is not a budget game: the price. NCSX is taking preorders for the title at a price of $58, and Amazon.jp lists the game's retail price at 6,090 yen ($55), with Amazon selling it for $46.

D3 is including somewhat of a consolation prize with every copy, in the form of a soundtrack CD. The music's the most entertaining thing about the game anyway!
Oneechanbara Revolution is definitely not a budget game originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Dec 2007 09:45:00 EST. The idea of a drag-racing game on the DS, we think, is somewhat novel, though we aren't sure if it'll translate into interesting gameplay.

We also think the anime-style presentation looks pretty nice, too, even if we're pretty sure we'd hate having our view of the race obscured by our character's constant emoting. We confess that in this game, we'd spend less time racing and more time in the car-washing minigame, because hey, car-washing minigame. There are also scratchable lottery tickets and Simple-series-themed slot machines that we think are pretty clever! They should distract nicely from the main game about driving in a straight line for a very short time.
Midnight drag racing on the DS, Simple-style originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2007 13:20:00 EST. You play a bikini wearing, katana wielding supermodel of a woman whose mission is the slaying of zombies. In theory, the only way you could make this game any better is to throw in some ninjas and pirates. Unfortunately, like so many great ideas, it works wonderfully on paper, but fails in the execution. Granted, we haven't actually played Oneechanbara X, but if this video is any indication, it looks like a real snoozer. Boring, generic hack and slash gameplay seems to be the order of the day, and the shooting character looks even worse. Watch the video after the break.
Continue reading Thong wearing zombie slayer is boring?

Thong wearing zombie slayer is boring? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Dec 2006 09:30:00 EST.
