If waking up at 5am in the morning this Friday to grab some of those deals on video games at Gamestop doesn't sound like your idea of a good time, then good news times two: One, you're completely sane. Second, GameStop is actually opening at 12:01am on Thanksgiving night/Friday morning, so if you can wake yourself out of your turkey coma to go and buy some games, you can get all your shopping done before the moon even comes out.

Best Buy is also opening up at 12am on Friday morning for its doorbuster sale, as is Target, despite some protests from employees and their families. Toys R Us is the real kicker, though: Its sales are starting at 9pm on Thursday night, hardly enough time for the football games to even finish before the holiday sales begin.

You can see all of the available deals on video games, online and offline, in our big, bad Black Friday deals post for this year. If you do head out to buy some items right away at midnight, maybe offer to buy the employees you see there some doughnuts or coffee -- if they're out there all night, they'll probably need it.
Retailers opening up at midnight (or even earlier) for Black Friday originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 00:00:00 EST. Target offers yet another choice if you're looking to stand in line on Black Friday for a $199 160 PS3 with LBP2 and Ratchet & Clank All 4 One, or a $99 Kinect with Kinect Adventures and The Gunstringer (with a bonus Wipeout 2, if that matters). Those console deals headline Target's Black Friday offers, along with a $179 3DS/Super Mario 3D Land bundle.

Target will also sell Battlefield 3, Gears 3, Resistance 3, Need for Speed 3: The Run, and Madden 12 for $37 each; and Forza 4, Kinect Sports 2, Dance Central 2, and more for $27 each. You also get a $10 gift card with the purchase of Rayman Origins, Ocarina of Time 3D, Skyrim, or two others.

That's all great, but the best deal is Babysitting Mama for $5. That's a game that you control with a doll!
Target Black Friday deals: $37 BF3, Resistance 3, $180 3DS bundle originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 22:30:00 EST. Target will hold a "buy 2, get 1 free" sale on its stock of video games next week. With half of the season's major titles out -- Uncharted 3 hits next Tuesday during the sale -- 'tis the season for bargain watching.
Target offers 'buy 2, get 1 free' deal on games next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 13:55:00 EST.

Just about every retailer on the planet agrees: the future is a lot closer than you may think! And here we were waiting for 30 Helens to agree this whole time ...

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is apparently slated for launch on March 6, according to listings on Gamefly, Amazon, Target, GameStop, Wal-Mart and Best Buy. While we'd never consider a retailer listing as fact (most of the time they're placeholders), the proliferation of identical is pretty compelling. And as of right now, all we really know is it'll launch at least after the planned January 2012 beta.

<strike>We've reached out to Ubisoft for comment and will let you know what we hear back.</strike> Update: We were able to confirm the launch date with Ubisoft. If 20 free games isn't enough incentive to spend $170 on a 3DS today, Target and GameStop have some deals that might interest you this weekend. Starting tomorrow and running through Saturday, GameStop is offering a $99 3DS with the trade-in of a DS Lite, DSi or DSi XL (sorry, no DS Phats). The only catch, you must have a PowerUp Rewards "Pro" member - which has a $15 membership fee - and you'll need a coupon. Starting Friday, Pro members can log in to the PowerUp Rewards website to print the coupon.

Depending on which DS you have, Target is offering an even better deal. Friday and Saturday only, Target will accept DS trade-ins for varying amounts of credit toward a 3DS. A DSi XL will earn you $100 and a DSi will net you $75. At the low end of the spectrum, a DS Lite is only good for a $40 credit towards a 3DS purchase. Still, if you've been wanting to unload that XL (they are heavy), you can snag a 3DS for only $70.
Continue reading Trade up to a 3DS with GameStop, Target specials this weekend

Trade up to a 3DS with GameStop, Target specials this weekend originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 19:40:00 EST. Target has dropped the price of the Nintendo 3DS to $170, a response likely initiated by yesterday's opening shot from Walmart. A Target employee tells Joystiq, "There is a message board out to every store that the price changes are active today. Price changes must be activated by corporate."

Officially, the Nintendo 3DS drop is to occur on August 12, reducing the current $250 asking price by thirty percent. Nintendo still has its early adopter bonus going until August 11, meaning if you grab one of these reduced 3DS units, you're still good to get the 20 free downloadable games once you register.

Now, we wait and see if every other retailer jumps into the price cut pool before Walmart and Target siphon all the sales.

If you've just gotta get those blue sparks, but also have to maintain your personal fiscal responsibility during these tough and uncertain economic times, Walmart.com has made your internal struggle between green-backs and green shells a little easier to reconcile by dropping both black and white Wii Mario Kart bundles to $134.00.
It will be interesting to see if other retailers follow suit, or if Nintendo will drop the price themselves ahead of the Wii U's launch, which would render Walmart's 15 dollar discount irrelevant. Either way, Walmart certainly seems determined to move some Nintendo merchandise out the door.
Target is offering up a pretty solid deal on an Xbox 360 Kinect bundle, if you need one for the garage (you know, the one place in your house where you actually have enough room for the thing to work). For this weekend only, you can get the standard Kinect setup for $299, and the Targe will throw in a $100 gift card as a bonus.

Unfortunately, that bundle only includes 4GB of memory, so you might have to pay out for an upgrade if you want to download a lot of XBLA titles. But perhaps that extra Benjamin you'll have picked up can help with that.
Continue reading Target offering $100 gift card with purchase of Xbox Kinect bundle this weekend

Target offering $100 gift card with purchase of Xbox Kinect bundle this weekend originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Jun 2011 18:20:00 EST. Despite the fact that retailers will assuredly have plenty of extra copies of Forza 4 when it arrives at retail, perhaps you're interested in pre-ordering the game long before its planned fall launch? Well that's just peachy, 'cause today Microsoft announced pre-order bonuses that folks can pick up at a variety of retailers.

Unfortunately -- as has become de rigeur as of late -- rather than making it so fans of the series can actually acquire all the pre-order items that they're nicely plunking down money for ahead of time, various retailers have exclusive in-game content that can only be attained through a pre-order at their stores. In essence, this means that folks who pre-order Forza 4 at Target are locked out of the bonuses being offered at Amazon, GameStop, Walmart, and Best Buy... at least, unless the retailer DLC is offered later through XBLM.

At very least, fans who pick up the game (at any store) around its launch later this year will snag a quintet of free vehicles in the "Ship Bonus" car pack, listed alongside the aforementioned pre-order items below the break. We kind of expected to see additional evidence of an upcoming Wii price drop if it's true, but now we have conflicting evidence. While rumors currently have the system dropping to $149.99 on May 15, images posted on GenGame show what appear to be an internal Target communication about the price changing to $169.99 this Monday.

The Target information refers to "Black Wii Console with Motion Plus Controller," which could either be a semi-accurate description of the most recent Wii hardware configuration (which includes a Wii Remote Plus), or a previous iteration which came with Wii Sports Resort, a Wii Remote, and a MotionPlus add-on.

If it's the latter (and these images are real), then this is a clearance of outdated hardware; if it's the former, it's a likely signal of a manufacturer price drop. In either case, it means the possibility of cheaper Wii hardware.
Rumor: Target cutting Wii price to $170 on April 18 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Apr 2011 18:07:00 EST. There's a gag floating around in Target's current discount on Call of Duty: Black Ops -- now available at the retailer for $47 -- but we're having trouble finding it. Soldiers shoot at Targets, see? And there are a lot of soldiers in Call of Duty: Black Ops. And Target? It's the name of the store. There's gotta be some combination of those concepts that we can weave together into a pun, but it's eluding us.

Target's knocking $10 off the price of a number of other recent releases as well, including Fable 3, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Medal of Honor, but none of those really have anything to do with targets, now do they? Except for Medal of Honor, which also plays host to a number of soldiers. Hm. Check out all of Target's gaming discounts -- available until Saturday, Dec. 18 -- after the jump.
Continue reading Call of Duty: Black Ops shoots at Target for $47, other games $10 off

Call of Duty: Black Ops shoots at Target for $47, other games $10 off originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 13:00:00 EST. Whoa, Target. Slow your roll, guys. We've only got enough energy for exactly one three-day period of soul-crushing retail immersion, and that three-day period is next weekend. You can't just come in here with your "we're going to offer deals in the four days preceding Black Friday" attitude. It's not fair. It could kill us.

We're just going to post all of Target's video game-themed "Pre-Black Friday" deals -- which will be available Nov. 21 to Nov. 24 -- after the jump, and ignore their relative savoriness. Oh, $30 off the purchase of a DSi? $20 off a new Wii? DJ Hero 2 Turntable Bundle for $75? Psh. We can ... we don't need to ... we are going to run out of money.
Continue reading Target Pre-Black Friday sale discounts DSi, DJ Hero 2 and more

Target Pre-Black Friday sale discounts DSi, DJ Hero 2 and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 06:00:00 EST. Closer still draws the slavering beast that is Black Friday. Now Target's deals have come to light, bringing good news for anyone out to snag some new games. The store is offering $10 gift cards with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and several other titles. Many others will be discounted to $35, including Halo: Reach, Fable 3, Medal of Honor, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and more. Meanwhile, titles like Shaun White Snowboarding, the Wii version of NBA Jam and more will be knocked down to $27. A range of other titles will also be available for $17 or $7.
Target will also be offering the PSP LittleBigPlanet / Karate Kid bundle for $127, slightly less than the $130 at RadioShack and Sears. Console bundle deals include a 4GB Xbox 360 with $50 gift card for $199 and a 160GB PS3 bundled with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 and Prince of Persia on Blu-Ray for $299. Starting this Sunday (Nov. 7) and running through the following Saturday (Nov. 13), Call of Duty: Black Ops buyers at Target are being offered a little something extra with their game purchase: an Xbox Live one-year subscription card for half price. As sent over by some Target-employed tipsters, the forthcoming week's advertisement flyer reveals the Black Ops-branded Xbox Live cards to be just $30 when purchased alongside next week's big release.

Just think of all the things you can do with that extra $30! You could get, like, a whole bunch of really delicious frozen yogurt! Or you could use it towards Microsoft Points -- sure to be useful when DLC for Black Ops inevitably arrives with a $15 price point per map pack. The choice is yours!

Today was the day we were supposed to finally, maybe play Gran Turismo 5 -- not even Walmart, it seems, can get over the latest delay. A search for the game today on the retailer's site turned up an "In Stock" result (pictured above); though clicking through to the product prompted only a pre-order option.

While there remains no definitive release date for the comically-delayed sim racer, a Sony representative reiterated in a statement to Joystiq today that the publisher is "still aiming for this holiday" to launch GT5. Sony has backed up this target window by recently updating retailers, which passed the information along to their customers. Specifically, Amazon has notified GT5 pre-orderers of a "new delivery estimate based on the new release date" -- that date being December 31, 2010. (A full copy of one such email is posted after the break.)

Although there are exceptions (first-party Nintendo games tend to be released on Sundays), almost all video games are released on Tuesdays -- just like today -- in the U.S. And though Amazon appears to be acting on a date provided by the publisher, Sony confirmed December 31 is just a placeholder. "As far as the Amazon date goes," a Sony representative told us, "retailers have arbitrary dates that get listed to coincide with any given title's launch window if we haven't provided a specific date. So it's completely driven from their side [...] A placeholder if you will." Similarly, GameStop and Target now list January 1, 2011 placeholder release dates for GT5 (whereas GameFly is sticking with "TBD," for now).

Technically, you can get away with extending the holiday season into early January, and by all accounts, GT5 is still on track to meet this rather dubious date range. According to retailer expectations, however, no gamer -- big or small -- is going to be unwrapping Gran Turismo 5 from under the Christmas tree, or from any other location their loved ones might stack their presents this holiday. Unless, of course, Sony can pull off a last-minute miracle.
Continue reading Retailers: Gran Turismo 5 to miss Christmas release

Retailers: Gran Turismo 5 to miss Christmas release originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 13:30:00 EST. Oh, man. It's starting. Target's responding to other retailers' offers on games with one of its own: Beginning Sunday and running through next week, shoppers who pick up two 360, PS3 or Wii games can grab a third game of equal or lesser value for freeskies. By which, of course, we mean for free.
Continue reading Target's 'Buy 2 Get 1' sale kicking off next week

Target's 'Buy 2 Get 1' sale kicking off next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 01:00:00 EST. Tipster BlindNoir photographed a PlayStation Plus access card found at a Target store, redeemable for one year of membership to the premium service (see a picture of the whole card after the break). Plans for these cards were first (casually) revealed by Sony's Susan Panico in June.

Of course, you could just buy a PSN retail card and use that to pay for a Plus membership (or anything else), but this move gives the fledgling PlayStation Plus more visibility during the holiday shopping season.

Continue reading PlayStation Plus retail cards spotted at Target

PlayStation Plus retail cards spotted at Target originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. With used games still making up the lion's share of retailer GameStop's profits -- and the failure of big box competitors Best Buy and Walmart in the space -- the time seems right for someone else to give it a shot. Enter: Target. The red and white-themed yin to Walmart's yang has announced the creation of the "Target Electronics Trade-In" program which "encourages guests to be eco-friendly by trading in old electronics devices" in exchange for (what else?) store credit. Included in that list of "electronics devices" are iPhones, iPods, cell phones and ... video games.

While we have no idea what someone wants with an old cell phone (Oh snap! Is that a 2003 RAZR?) we do know that used video games are big business. For now, it sounds like Target is just in the business of buying used games; it's unclear what happens to those games and if they'll ever find their way back into Target stores.

Speaking of Target stores, this in-store program launched in Northern California yesterday and "will rollout to additional stores in September and will be available in approximately 850 stores by the end of the year." All you need to do is take your old games to a store (remember: NorCal only for now) that features a Target Mobile counter - there, they'll be appraised, you'll get paid in Target-bucks, and you pick up some more trash bags. Oh, and batteries! And don't forget you need some new socks.
Target buying used games; in NorCal for now, 850 stores by year's end originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 19:20:00 EST. Target's current weekly ad, the deals of which will be available until this Saturday, includes a heavily discounted price of $150 for the "Wii Legacy" console.

GameStop (EB Games in Canada) pre-orders will include "Ninja Monkey," who has unlimited use of the "stun" and "plasma" blast for his staff.

Walmart purchases add "Classic Monkey," with a costume inspired by the game's source, the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West, and twice the melee attack power -- and it also makes Monkey look even more like Dragon Ball's Goku (who's inspired by the same source text).

Best Buy-ers will receive ... "Sexy Robot Trip," who reveals a specific fetish on the part of someone at Namco Bandai by making Trip simultaneously sexier and more robotic. Using this costume doubles the duration (and sexiness) of stun moves.

Additionally, Namco Bandai has announced retailer-exclusive bundles containing more tangible bonuses. Amazon bundles will include "exclusive access" to the game's soundtrack, while Target (and Future Shop in Canada) will offer a bundle with an Enslaved comic book published by Marvel. The source press release is posted after the break.
Two weeks ago, we published reports from a Target employee who claimed an MLB 10-branded 250GB PS3 Slim bundle had appeared on their store's list of new releases. Recently, another piece of evidence surfaced which adds further credibility to the story: Target's online store recently added the MLB 10 bundle to its virtual shelves.

The online listing is scant on details -- it only mentions that the bundle comes with the console and a copy of the game. The tipster from two weeks ago reported a release date of June 13, and a price of $349.99 for the package. Once again, we've contacted Sony to try and get official confirmation of these details.

An alleged Target inventory listing appears to indicate the impending arrival of a new PlayStation 3 bundle. According to the printout (seen above) and a photograph of a scanner (posted after the break), the bundle includes a 250GB PS3 Slim and a copy of MLB '10 The Show for $349.99. It'll hit store shelves on June 13. We've contacted a number of Target locations, one of which was able to confirm that the listing was in their database.

Given the recent deal struck up between the MLB and Sony to stream live baseball games directly to the console, an MLB '10 bundle seems like an appropriate promotion. Regardless, we've contacted Sony to see if we can get a comment about this listing's authenticity.

Update: A Sony representative responded, saying "we don't comment on rumors or speculation about our business."
Continue reading Rumor: 250GB PS3 bundled with MLB '10 in June

Rumor: 250GB PS3 bundled with MLB '10 in June originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 May 2010 12:59:00 EST. If you've been waiting for a marginal discount before bulk-buying the fake currency required to download content off your consoles' online marketplaces, Target's got you covered. Until this Saturday, you can stop by your local bullseye-branded retailer and grab a $20 Wii Point Card, Microsoft Point Card, or PlayStation Network card for just $17. Sure, it's not the biggest markdown in the history of shopping, but seeing as how we purchase online e-funds two to three times a day, even the smallest discounts are greatly appreciated.
After you heard what we had to say about Final Fantasy XIII, you may very well now be itching to finally get your own hands all over the thirteenth entry in the FF series from Square Enix. Lucky for you, dearest reader, we've got news of a couple ways to save some dough on your purchase this week.

Target is offering a $10 gift card with purchase of either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version, while Amazon is offering a $10 pre-order incentive credit towards future video game purchases for both versions as well (oh, and also, the game costs $56.99 instead of $59.99, which is kinda nice). Sure, neither offers a free rideable chocobo or anything wonderful like that, but that $10 at Target could potentially buy pizza bagels. And did you know that when pizza's on a bagel, you can apparently eat pizza at any time? Madness!
If you've been putting off that trip to Hell for financial reasons, it looks like Target might lend you a hand next week. Starting this Sunday, Dante's Inferno will be on sale for only $39.99, a full $20 off the normal retail price. Not a bad deal for a game that has thus far drawn passable reviews.

The store is also knocking ten bucks off the the price of NBA 2K10, making it a cool $29.99. Just be warned, while the price is right, you might be waiting a while before you can play a proper game online. Oh, you can also snag a free Ho-Oh or Lugia Pokémon if you pre-order either Pokemon SoulSilver or Pokemon HeartGold. We suggest you do that and pick up Dante's Inferno. It'll be really confusing to the cashier.
Dante's Inferno for $40 at Target next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Feb 2010 01:05:00 EST. Casual PC game retailer MumboJumbo games recently announced a partnership with Number None to distribute puzzle-platformer Braid to retailers. No specific date has been given for the game's arrival at retail, but we do know it'll have a $19.99 MSRP and will be available at "Walmart, Target, Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon.com, Fry's, and a number of regional retailers as well." A representative from MumboJumbo also told us that the game has shipped and should be on retailer shelves "by February 1."

We're not exactly sure how a $20 release of Braid with a cardboard box is going to compete with the (at very least) less tactile and often cheaper digital equivalent, but we suppose it can't help to get the game into more markets. Now Target and Walmart game shoppers can be just as confused by its story! Oh we're just joshin' -- we kid because we love, ya know.
Nintendo and Target are teaming up for the "Wii Fit Plus Experience," which is apparently an elaborate version of the Sports Authority experience with prizes. Across the United States' lower latitudes, visitors to the experience, which will be held in the parking lot or entrance of the stores between January 16-31, will gain (/groan) "feet-on" time with Wii Fit Plus.

Those who complete the Wii Fit Plus demo will receive a $15 gift card (while supplies last), which "can be applied toward any Target purchase." Therefore, we recommend humoring the Nintendo "ambassadors" working the kiosks. Gratefully take that gift card and blow it on junk food -- then get time-lapse coverage of all that junk food going straight to your ever-expanding butt and post it on YouTube. The locations holding the Wii Fit Plus Experience can be found after the break.
Continue reading Nintendo and Target teaming up for Wii Fit Plus promo -- receive $15 gift card

Nintendo and Target teaming up for Wii Fit Plus promo -- receive $15 gift card originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Jan 2010 17:00:00 EST. According to unofficial sales numbers from Japan, Final Fantasy XIII has fallen down to number four on the sales list over there, after a very big million-plus release day and a record-breaking first week. But otaku take heart: even though sales of the game dropped over a million units in the second week, this wasn't unexpected.

Final Fantasy games always tend to take a dip after the "day one purchase" audience gets their copies. The last iteration of the series took a 1.5 million unit hit in week two. But even with the lower sales, about 200,000 copies were traded for the appropriate cost in yen, which indicates Square Enix is likely still on track to meet or exceed its six million target worldwide. That's a lot of chocobos.
Seems like these buy 2, get 1 free sales are all the rage these days, as Target has just announced it will be hosting one starting November 1. Unlike the recent sales from Amazon, Toys R Us and Best Buy, Target's sale applies only to Wii games, though it's worth noting that it does apply to all of them. As Wii games tend to be significantly cheaper than 360 and PS3 games, this might be a good deal for the early holiday shoppers out there.

Target is also offering a deal on Band Hero starting November 3 and running through next week. Those that pick up any version of the Band Hero bundle ($199) will get a free $20 gift card along with it. That should be just enough to buy supplies for the Taylor Swift party you will no doubt be forced to throw.
Buy 2 Wii games, get 1 free at Target starting Nov. 1 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 22:00:00 EST. This ad would further corroborate the Toys R Us ad we saw that also showed the same price cut -- if we knew either ad was real. Us? We're hoping for a drastic price cut on cameras so tipsters can get better pictures of these advance ads.

The DVD at the right side of the Target ad is Monsters vs. Aliens, which comes out on September 29. That at least shows that if this ad is a fake, it's a somewhat clever one. As always, we're not going to take this as confirmation of a price drop, but we will take it as confirmation that it would be smart to wait a couple of weeks before going to buy a Wii.
Rumor: Target circular advertises $199 Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Sep 2009 13:40:00 EST. Been shopping at Target lately? Did you know they have an entire rack devoted to video game underwear? Yes, you read that right: Video. Game. Underwear. Included in the bunch are Halo, Atari, both Rock Band and Guitar Hero brands, and PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers, all available for $9.99 in themed tins. Although the truly hardcore don't rock any underwear at all, right? Just like Wii players, commando is the order of the day.

Sadly, we neglected to check the women's side to see if there are female counterparts to these underpants and, secretly, we'd really love to rock a Rock Band thong. Update: we sent a secret shopper on a mission to Target and she's reported back: No gaming underwear for the ladies. You call this progress, gaming industry?
Gaming underwear for the truly hardcore originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Sep 2009 05:00:00 EST. In addition, the ad advertises Pro systems for $249.99 -- and both systems will have an extra controller thrown in. If this is real, it'll be in effect August 30. Engadget has a clearer shot of the ad.

In addition, we received a tip from a Canadian game store manager who stated that because of the Halo 3 Elite bundle available there (which is no longer on The Source's website -- we guess that retailer jumped the gun), current Elite bundles have been marked down to $349.99. A quick look at The Source and Amazon verifies this claim.

Rumor: Xbox 360 Elite, Pro deals revealed by Target originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Aug 2009 09:30:00 EST. Target -- or Targét, for those in the know -- has Xbox 360 software at "buy one, get one 50% off" this week. That means purchasing one game at normal price and getting another of equal or lesser value at 50 percent off. The Target flyer for the week of June 14 shows the retail chain will offer gift cards for two very particular game purchases. First off, customers who buy both Tiger Woods PGA 2010 (with Wii MotionPlus) and Grand Slam Tennis will receive a $20 Target gift card.

Meanwhile, those who purchase Guitar Hero Smash Hits (which isn't out until Tuesday) will receive a $5 gift card, no matter what platform they buy it for. However, we should also mention there are Smash Hits pre-order specials from several other retailers, so you should check to see if those are still available.
Target offers gift cards with MotionPlus games, Guitar Hero Smash Hits originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 15:45:00 EST.
