Update: Precursor Games will seek $1.5 million in funding when its campaign begins on Monday, a representative of the studio has told IGN. Additionally, Shadow of the Eternals will be released as 12 episodes for PC and Wii U, though an expected release window was not given.

Initial story details describe Detective Paul Becker as a Louisiana cop embroiled in a conflict between two warring cults. The game will "span over 2500 years of history throughout Egypt, England, Hungary, and the United States" while players "try to balance the mechanics of combat, magick, and sanity events."

Original text: Shadow of the Eternals was announced earlier today in a trailer on IGN with wording that heavily implies the game is a spiritual successor to the 2002 Gamecube cult classic Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Under development at Precursor Games, Shadow of the Eternals will be multiplatform, presuming the success of a crowdfunding drive that is set to begin on Monday.

Whether that crowdfunding initiative takes the shape of a Kickstarter, Indiegogo or independent campaign remains to be seen. What is known, however, is that Eternal Darkness director and producer Denis Dyack is involved in the project to some degree.

On a more cryptic note, the Latin phrase at the beginning of the trailer translates to "The Order of the Unseen," which jives with the trailer's request for the viewer to "join the order." Personally, we're going to need to see some kind of incentive before we sign anything. Do we get a free toaster? Are utilities included? Let's make a deal here.
Under the working title "Next Car Game," the teaser trailer above shows off a chaotic demolition derby using in-game footage.

According to the developer's site, it feels "there hasn't been a proper demolition derby game in years." The game is coming to PC and other platforms, though Bugbear didn't specify what ones. Who ever would have guessed? Team Meat's games are usually so nonviolent.

Furthermore, McMillen stated that he has been "using faked graphics for all the cats" in his weekly updates about Mew-Genics, meaning that everything we've seen so far has essentially been concept art. Next week, however, Team Meat will "finally announce what this damn game is," according to its official blog.
Team Meat teases cat fighting, full Mew-Genics announcement next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Feb 2013 19:30:00 EST. Attempting to navigate to one of the picture's "files" parent folder results in being automatically redirected to an eidosinteractive.com subdomain. Ah ha!

Minutes later, we received an email from a Square Enix e-mail address (masquerading as an "@murdered.com" address) with the subject header "What is the hardest case to solve?" Contained inside was a second image, which combined perfectly with the image that had been tweeted earlier.

Naturally we decided to check out murdered.com, and were met by an image of the symbol scrawled on asphalt in chalk, accompanied by a link to the official twitter account and icons revealing the project's related platforms. A whois search revealed that the domain is registered to Naoto Sugiyama, a senior manager at Square Enix., and a glance at the site's source code revealed certain assets as being hosted on Eidos webspace.

Furthermore, Square Enix registered a Japanese trademark for "Murdered: Soul Suspect" back in December of last year, Siliconera reports. We've contacted both Square Enix and the murdered.com address and will update with any new discoveries we're able to make.

Update: Well, that was fun while it lasted. Square Enix has confirmed to us that Murdered: Soul Suspect is "an exciting new game from Square Enix which challenges players to solve possibly the hardest case of all," which obviously wasn't this case, since all we had to do was send an email and ask. Eidos' potential involvement, however, does remain a mystery.
'Murdered' teased by spooky Square Enix ARG [Update!] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Feb 2013 12:00:00 EST. The game was previously announced for iOS.

Team Meat also took a moment to discuss the history of Mew-Genics, noting that the project has been in development for 18 weeks. It started as a Ludum Dare 24 challenge under the "Evolution" theme, though Team Meat went with the "1,000 kittens" joke theme that the community attempted to vote in. After three days of development in Flash, the development duo realized it had a "monster mashup of many different game genres with an underlying theme [it] hadn't seen done in games before" on its hands. Mew-Genics then became the developer's full-time project.

The team also recognizes how obscure the "Caturday" teasers have become, saying it "will only do two more Caturday teasers after this then pull back and focus on getting the game done as well as officially announcing what the game actually is and how it plays."
Team Meat grants Mew-Genics Steam support, details project history originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 03 Feb 2013 12:00:00 EST. Obviously, we were chuffed to bits when Cyberpunk 2077's ultra-stylized teaser trailer gave us a big ol' dose of the latter, but it turns the former was in there as well, waiting to chuff our bits even further.

A single frame at the end of the trailer contains a message from developer CD Projekt, which states that the game's release date is "currently scheduled way off in 2015, but in truth the delivery date is more like 'when it's done,'" which was the "date" officially given in the trailer.

The missive goes on to say that CD Projekt's "other project," which is also a "fully open-world game with an intense story," is much closer to completion and that further information will be delivered on Tuesday, February 5. Here's hoping said information is contained within a floppy disk buried in a secret location that can only be discovered by dialing into a BBS, whose number can only be found by decoding the hexagon string written in Morse code on a scroll strapped to the leg of a pigeon. But which pigeon?!
CD Projekt RED talks tentative Cyberpunk 2077 launch window, 'other project' in secret message originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jan 2013 22:30:00 EST. The game includes a trinket display case for all the "stuff" that players acquire, which sometimes "appear imbued with magic properties that change space and time."

Collectable trinkets include food, vomit, kittens, mail and petrified poop. The petrified poop shown in the picture "slightly lowers damage taken," so at least we can assume that this game about cats (many cats) includes some kind of health and damage system. Of course, the petrified poop seen here also lowers the "poop rate" of all cats, so there are apparently some other gameplay elements happening here. There are 105 trinket types in Mew-Genics, each with semi randomly-generated properties.
Latest Mew-Genics teaser collects trinkets with 'magic properties' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 16 Dec 2012 10:30:00 EST. The developer blog explains that the enormous number "only applies to how the cat looks, if you include its personality variables that number multiplies by A LOT."

Team Meat added that "ability variables and personal stats" could practically guarantee that you'll never get the same cat twice in the game. Not that we know what that entails, since all we really know about Mew-Genics is that it's "kind of" about cats. Lots of them.
Mew-Genics to hoard over 12 sextillion cats originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 01 Dec 2012 19:30:00 EST. Showing the text "2x5," and following it with five very recognizable sound clips from some of Sega's greatest arcade games, specifically those that ran on its Model 2 board. All told, we hear Akira from Virtua Fighter 2, Bahn from Fighting Vipers, rings from Sonic: The Fighters, and the announcers from Virtua Striker and Virtual On. Sega will apparently be making an announcement about the games tomorrow, presumably that they're coming to download services like PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers and Sonic: The Fighters aren't exactly a surprise, as they've already been rated for Xbox by the USK, but this is the first time we've heard of Virtua Striker or Virtual On. Good news for fans of soccer and giant robots!
Sega teases return of Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, Virtual On and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 14:30:00 EST. As you might have guessed, the posted trailer was entirely a work in progress, with most assets and even the script likely set to be replaced before it appeared before the public.

The trailer itself would have been a launch trailer, likely also released with some in-game or hands-on footage, and the illustrated look seen in the trailer was planned to be a characteristic of the game itself, used to introduce the game's various races and factions.

As for the tri-circle logo, which seems very similar to the recently revealed Elder Scrolls Online logo: Danuser says the design is coincidental, and that the two MMOs were using the same themes. 38 Studios' logo was put together before anyone from the team saw what Zenimax Online was working on. "That's what you get," says Danuser, who fondly remembers working on putting the trailer together, "for basing your IP on classic themes."
Former 38 Studios Creative Director provides context for leaked trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2012 19:35:00 EST. De Lancie is, of course, known for his part as "Q" in the James Bond series, aiding Bond in his interstellar travels of exploration and diplomacy. Or he was a popular Star Trek character -- one of the two.

Anyway, De Lancie is playing the part of Professor Fitz Quadrangle, advising the main character on gameplay and ushering story points forward (he is, after all, stuck in an alternate dimension, anxiously awaiting your help). A teaser site has launched showcasing concept art for five new characters, two of which bear a striking (albeit distinctly female) resemblance to Lucifel and Enoch from the first game.

The text in front of the concept art roughly translates to "Who is the ultimate angel who God speaks of?" according to Andriasang. The site's URL, www.elshaddai-sb.jp, may also contain clues, specifically that "sb" may be the initials of this thing's subtitle, whatever it is. We'll keep an eye our for more details, but right now our money is on a fighting game: El Shaddai: Super Battle, El Shaddai: Seraphim Battalion, something along those lines.
Ignition teaser site hints at new El Shaddai title originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Mar 2012 16:30:00 EST. Wondering what BioWare's next, unannounced project is? So are we! Game Informer has the exclusive on the first teaser image (seen above), and promises all will be revealed at next month's Spike Video Game Awards show. We've got high hopes that your eyes are sharper than ours, because we're not seeing much here other than the obvious: the dude flying from the car appears to be black, wearing a chain of bullets, and ... uh ... maybe he's being attacked by the smoke monster? Like you, we'll find out when the VGAs air on December 10.
BioWare's next IP teased with Uncharted-esque car flipping action shot originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 12:14:00 EST. If you didn't make it to the end of Konami's pre-E3 presentation, you might have missed one of the most exciting clips therein. You remember that crazy Assassin's Creed teaser site that Ubisoft briefly launched late last week before pulling it down and pretending nothing happened? Turns out the French publisher is interested in promoting its next AC game after all, as the Facebook posting has reappeared and a trio of teaser videos are now available (found after the break).

The latest of the videos shows what appears to be the first Assassin's Creed's main protagonist, Altair, though the only portion unobscured with distortion is -- naturally -- his hidden blade. Some vaguely Assassin's Creed 1-looking buildings can also be seen in the upper left corner, potentially hinting at a return to the Middle Eastern setting for the next game in the series.
Folks interested in helping speed the reveal process for the next game can choose from a variety of social media-tied means to assist, though the progress bar for the reveal is reflecting just a four percent completion as of right now. While we're really interested in finding out what the next AC game is, we'd never outright suggest spamming your Facebook/Twitter for game reveal countdowns. We'll just say this: Do what you think is right.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed reveal campaign reactivated, third teaser clip appears

Assassin's Creed reveal campaign reactivated, third teaser clip appears originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 May 2011 13:30:00 EST. We've known a new Soul Calibur game is coming since back in December and now it would appear that Namco Bandai is finally ready to make a formal announcement. Well, not now now. Like, in two weeks.

A site teasing a "new chapter" in something has recently emerged online, counting down to May 11 -- presumably when the identity of said chapter will be announced. Corroborating the mid-May reveal is a tweet from Soul Calibur's "current game director" Daishi Odashima promising "to announce something" at that time. If we were rating the mystery behind this reveal, we'd probably give it an F. Minus.
Gameplay rarely lives up to the trailers that precede it, and we certainly hope that's the case with the Prey 2 teaser Bethesda sent out this morning. If the Prey franchise is passed from a disenfranchised Native American and his spirit grandpa to a whiny bro and his pistol-wielding air marshal pal, we don't think we can count it as anything other than a downgrade.

See for yourself just after the jump.

[Update: Bethesda has clarified for us that our new hit character "whiny bro" was tragically killed in this video. However, sky cop survives to head up Prey 2.]
Continue reading Prey 2 teaser leaves us scratching our Human Heads

Prey 2 teaser leaves us scratching our Human Heads originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 10:30:00 EST. It turned out each glyph represented a letter, and with the puzzle solved a new site was spelled out: ATaleOfTwoRichards.com. And that site has brought us the blurred image seen above, which bears a notable resemblance to the logo (posted after the break) for Tales of Graces F, the PS3 port of Tales of Graces that was released in Japan in early December. Additionally, the "Richard" in the URL could be a reference to the character of the same name, who appears both as a child and an adult in the game (which could sort of be considered "two Richards").

Even more conclusive evidence that Namco is doing the impossible and actually localizing a Tales game can be found after the break, in the form of the less blurred image that was initially posted on the teaser site, according to NeoGAF poster miladesn.

Update: Namco has refreshed ATaleofTwoRichards.com with an even blurrier image and the date "2.2.2011" (February 2).

Update [2/2/11, 3:20PM ET]: Namco has updated the teaser site with -- if you can believe it -- the blurriest image yet. Additionally, the teased date of "2.2.2011" has been removed. So now what?
Last week, Activision uploaded a teaser site featuring the tagline "Murder Your Maker," which we hypothesized was hinting at the reveal of a new installment in the Prototype series during the Spike VGAs. Earlier this week, a mysterious Spike VGA 2010 site asked its visitors to consider the secret meanings of two mysterious and secret phrases: "MURDER" and "LOOK CLOSER." Today, a new teaser site offers a few more clues. The page, titled "Murder Your Maker," features the image seen above: A bald man, staring at a wall covered in maps, newspaper clippings and delicious strands of black licorice. Or, wait. String. Yeah, that's definitely string.

The "Murder Your Maker" tagline has led some theorists to believe we're looking at a teaser for a sequel to last year's super violent, open-world title, Prototype. Alex Mercer certainly has some daddy issues, but our money is on that new God of War game, where Kratos is literally tasked with killing God.

Once again, some sneaky developers are hinting at a big game reveal during the Spike 2010 VGAs using extremely surreptitious methods. A commercial for the awards program (posted after the jump) flashes the above image for a fraction of a second, seemingly indicating the premiere of some kind of game featuring "Infected." A couple years ago, we would have taken this as evidence of a new Left 4 Dead, but considering how zombies are now somehow included in every piece of popular media known to man, we can't be quite so certain.

Also briefly flashed during the ad is a QR code -- much like those dropped by BioWare, which hinted at its own VGA reveal last Wednesday. However, scanning this particular bar code leads you to another VGA teaser site, featuring the words "Look Closer" and "Murder." We have no idea what this means, but if someone's working on some kind of snuff film game, then they should probably stop, because we're so not down.
Continue reading Spike VGA 2010 commercial hints at 'Infected' game revelation

Spike VGA 2010 commercial hints at 'Infected' game revelation originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. A teaser site has revealed that a TV series based on the Stalker FPS franchise is being developed for Russian television. The site is called "KinoS.T.A.L.K.E.R." ("kino" meaning "film" in Russian), has both an English and a Russian section, and was linked to by Ukraine's GSC Game World's Facebook profile. There's also a trailer on the site, subtitled in English, though it's hard to tell what's going on with all the series standards in there -- including mutants, darkness, and explosions aplenty.

Still, the site clearly states that there is a "TV series coming soon" based on the property, which itself takes influence from Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 film, as well as the old science fiction story "Roadside Picnic." Stalker fans will probably be happy to hear that the series will mutate into yet another form of media.
Russian Stalker TV series teased originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. What good's a secret project without a secret teaser website? WhatIsIcarus.com isn't much at the moment -- as evidenced by the image above -- but it's likely to fill in leading up to the August 11 reveal of Irrational Game's "Project Icarus."

While domain registry info does not directly link the mystery site to Irrational, its nameservers point to parent-company Take-Two, along with (curiously) sister subsidiary Rockstar Games. For those of you who enjoy a long tease (without a countdown clock), keep an eye on WhatIsIcarus -- and let us know when something happens!
What is Icarus? Ubisoft has released a teaser video and a countdown site for its relaunch of the Driver series (the last title of which was released back in the heady days of aught-seven). We knew that there would be a new Driver to see at E3, and the site's countdown lines up with 5 p.m. PDT next Monday, June 14, which happens to be the exact same time that Ubisoft is holding its pre-expo press conference. What are the odds?

The trailer seems to hint at most of the mainstays of the series, including our old friend Tanner (who's been transplanted to California, apparently, and has become a 49ers fan), rip-roaring muscle cars and the old "garage stunts checklist" that players had to pull off back when the series started. The site also links to a Facebook page, where you can "discover the driver's identity" (wait, didn't they just show it in the video?) by clicking the "Like" button. So if Ubisoft's goal was to get Driver fans intrigued, it's probably working. We'll light the fires and kick the tires on the game in about a week.
Braking: Ubisoft's new Driver teased in video originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 22:00:00 EST. There's a substantial number of games we've been hoping to see unveiled at E3 later this month, but our desire for the announcement of one game in particular easily overshadows all others: Half-Life 2: Episode 3. We've tempered our expectations for such an announcement after being disappointed at trade shows for like, a decade -- but if the teaser image posted after the jump is legit, our wait might just be coming to an end in a little over a week.

The image features the Half-Life Lambda symbol, the word "Freeman," a barely visible watermark of what appears to be G-Man's face, and a mention of June 14 -- the original date for the (rather humorously) canceled Portal 2 event. We're still worried about playing the Charlie Brown to Valve's Lucy -- Rock, Paper, Shotgun claims the image is a fake, but doesn't provide the source for that information. We've contacted Valve about the teaser's authenticity, though we're finding it awfully hard to type out an email when all of our fingers are crossed.

Update: Reader Jake Handy pinged Valve's Gabe Newell about this, and Newell's response couldn't have been clearer -- or more terse: "Fake."
Continue reading Rumor: Half-Life 2 announcement teased by 'Freeman' art [update]

Rumor: Half-Life 2 announcement teased by 'Freeman' art [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 05 Jun 2010 15:30:00 EST. So, it's a lot like every Alan Wake video, but it's especially like the Bright Falls prequel series in that it's composed of live-action footage. The only thing that looks unrealistic, really, is the imperiled author's jacket-hoodie combination.

We're impressed by how well the video captures some of the Xbox 360 thriller's imagery -- such as the blinding flares and the mysterious manuscript pages -- and we suspect it's part of a live-action commercial (much like those made for Microsoft's Halo franchise) or another web short. We'll be sure to bring you more information next week.

Alan Wake spotted in live-action teaser originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Jun 2010 18:30:00 EST. The last page in the most recent issue of Portugal's PlayStation: The Official Magazine features a pair of eyes you might be familiar with, depending on how frequently you stare into the baby blues of your video game protagonists. Scrawl captured the image of the teasing brow, which appears to belong to one Cole McGrath, hero (or anti-hero) of inFamous. That observation is supported by the text following the image, which translates to "the announcement of a great PlayStation 3 exclusive sequel in the next ROPS." (ROPS is the acronym for the magazine's Portuguese edition.)

Now that the pile of evidence indicating a sequel to last year's charged action game is teetering into the clouds, we think it's safe to expect some form of announcement at E3. In fact, we'd be shocked if ... no? We can't use that one anymore? Fair enough.
Dookieheads (that's what Green Day fans are colloquially referred to, right?) who downloaded the two-track Green Day: Rock Band demo from Xbox Live Marketplace today (gold subscribers only) found a little bonus waiting for them when they exited the demo: The teaser image posted above. Alongside the series' four iconic instrument logos is a whole new symbol, which seems to indicate that keyboards (or perhaps ... keytars?) will be added to Rock Band 3.

You can check out the demo, which includes the songs "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Welcome to Paradise," to see the teaser firsthand, and to start imagining all the wonderful implications a Rock Band keyboard might have.
