The Tex Murphy: Project Fedora Kickstarter is fully funded, and even looks in reach of surpassing its $450,000 goal by a solid $100,000 when the campaign expires on Saturday, June 16. Then the real work begins.

Project Fedora will be shot in Tex Murphy's classic full-motion video, with series creator Chris Jones returning as the man in the hat. Not that it's the same hat.

"Unfortunately, the original fedora has been crushed so many times it makes me look like Jed Clampett about to go to his favorite fishing hole," Jones tells Joystiq. Never fear, keepers of continuity: Project Fedora's trench coat is the same one from the previous Tex Murphy titles. Germophobes, maybe ignore that bit of insider information.

Along with a slightly updated wardrobe, Project Fedora is taking advantage of technological advances in FMV that weren't accessible 20 years ago. "CG is used in action movies more often than not these days and I have no doubt that FMV could be integrated much more effectively - and with less effort - than back in the day," Jones says. "Today, with fewer restrictions and limitations, we can do it even better."

Project Fedora hits funding goal with one week left

The next live-action adventure title in the Tex Murphy series, Project Fedora, has been fully funded with a week left in its Kickstarter campaign. After raising almost $500k from over 5,000 fans, creators Chris Jones and Aaron Conners are turning their attention to the project's stretch goals in the event they raise even more money for the project.

Stretch goals include porting the game to additional platforms in more languages as well as expansions on the game's story. Jones discusses the team's "big finish manifesto" in the video above.

Tex Murphy gets a Kickstarter page for Project Fedora

The rumored Tex Murphy Kickstarter has been confirmed, to the tune of $216,000 (out of $450k as of this writing). That's how much creators Chris Jones and Aaron Conners have put together already to make the long-awaited "Project Fedora," the next in the cult classic series of full motion video sci-fi noir titles.

You can get a copy of the (eventual) game just by backing at the price of $15, and there are lots of other rewards for higher payments, including a collector's edition, new commentary for the old Tex Murphy games, and even the chance to beta test and be in the game itself. The creators say that the game will have full-motion video, but it will also include a 3D game world, with branching paths of story to follow. As Tex says in the wild Kickstarter video, "it's hat-in-hand time," so go over and give if you want to get in early.

Tex Murphy may be revived as a Kickstarter proposal

Before we say anything here, make sure you've got a firm grasp on your wallet because it might just jump out of your pocket. The odds are very good that Tex Murphy is coming back in a new game ... funded by Kickstarter. Whoa there! Hang on to that wallet, there's no place to spend your money just yet, kid!

As announced by the trailer above, Big Finish Games indeed has plans to start up a Kickstarter page on May 15, and try to round up fan-based funding for a sixth game in the fondly remembered full-motion video adventure series. What they're asking for right now is ideas on what to offer in the Kickstarter campaign, as well as written or video testimonials from fans extolling the series' virtues, to be delivered to the company's contact page.

On May 15, the page is supposed to go live, and at that point you can donate to your heart's content. Chris Jones, who both designed the games and plays Tex Murphy himself, is obviously on board, because you can see him mugging in character with the latest People magazine right there in the video.

GOG.com now carrying Star Control 3, Tex Murphy on sale

GOG.com has released Star Control 3 on the digital distribution service -- the sequel to the Toys for Bob strategy classics isn't quite as well-remembered as the other games in the series, but completists who want to finish off the story of the Precursors can pick up the title for $5.99. If you want some quality 4X space gaming, Master of Orion 1 and 2 are available for the same price -- just sayin'.

And speaking of negotiating with aliens in old-school games, all of the Tex Murphy titles are also on sale this weekend, from the original games up to 1998's Tex Murphy: Overseer (which itself is actually a retelling of the first story in the series). If you're up for some interactive mystery in a sci-fi setting, GOG's got you covered.

Tex Murphy is the protagonist of a series of vintage adventure games, combining post-apocalyptic sci-fi with pulp detective stories. If that sounds intriguing to you, you can get the first two games in the series, Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum, for free from GOG.com! The games may not have aged gracefully, but the price certainly has.

The site is offering the two Access Software adventures as a holiday gift, from now through December 24. Or, if you already bought those games from GOG, you can get a mysterious "alternative gift."
