If you've ever wondered why fanatical Valve devotees are so fanatically devoted, <em>this is exactly why</em>. The company's titles have an excellent sense of humor, sure, but its fun, intelligent stuff like this that endears the development studio to the hearts of gamers everywhere.<br />
<br />
In celebration of everyone's favorite cosplay justification, Valve has released a free update for their free-to-play free-for-all <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/team-fortress-2"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a>, which promises an "ENORMOUS HAUNTED EYEBALL," as well as fresh 'chievos and costumes for each class. There's even a <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/bombinomicon/">comic</a> to provide a little backstory, which is worth checking out strictly for its artistic merit, even if <em>TF2</em> isn't your jam.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/30/scream-fortress-2-returns-with-new-comic-costumes-and-at-least/">Scream Fortress 2 returns with new comic, costumes and at least one haunted eyeball</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 30 Oct 2011 20:30:00 EST. After watching this short, we're not only convinced that a live-action <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/team-fortress-2"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a> can be done well, we also adamantly want it to happen. Like, <em>bad</em>. Hey AMC, you're taking a lot of risks these days, how 'bout adding another original series to the pile?<br />

You may want to sit down for this one, innocent, doe-eyed gamer. Valve - the gaming company that no matter how rich they may or may not be always has your best interests in mind - has just released an update to the oft-updated <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Team-Fortress-2/"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a> that is going to radically alter your worldview. You see, in-game items are no longer things you earn through sheer digi-work and e-sweat; the so-called "Mann-conomy Update" will allow players to use actual Earth bucks to purchase items. How many items? Valve's Robin Walker tells PC Gamer, "It's roughly the equivalent of 60% of the items we have released in the 120+ prior updates." So, a lot.<br />
<br />
Item cost will range from $0.49 to $4.99 and "community item contributors will get paid based on the sales of their items." Instead of using an in-game wallet, <em>Team Fortress 2's </em>Mann Co. Store will use the Steam Wallet service which is available for in-game purchases in any Steam game. In addition to making items available for sale, the update also adds item trading, item customization, a dueling minigame, mystery item crates, and item sets. It's a lot of stuff, is what we're saying. Read the source links below for all the gory (or exciting, depending on your perspective) details.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><strong>Update:</strong> The sale is over. We hope you managed to grab <em>TF2</em> -- for yourself or a friend -- while the getting was good.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> </div>
<br /><strong>Original:</strong> Actually, it's less than two hours now, so <em>what are you waiting for</em>? It's two dollars and fifty cents! It's usually <em>twenty</em><em> whole dollars</em>. <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/440/">Go buy it</a>. Now. Go! <br /> <br /> If you grab it now (or if you already have it), you can enjoy the <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/pumpkinpatch/">first annual <em>Team Fortress</em> Haunted Halloween Special</a>, which will bring new haunted maps, exploding pumpkins and update-specific Steam Achievements. We'd write more, but that would only waste more time. Time you could spend buying <em>Team Fortress 2</em>.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=3014">TF2 Official Blog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/29/team-fortress-2-knocked-to-2-49-for-the-next-two-hours/">Team Fortress 2 knocked to $2.49 ... for the next two hours [update: it's over]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 15:35:00 EST. <div align="left">In memorial of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tf2"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/16/team-fortress-2s-spy-murders-sniper-both-receive-updates/">ill-fated Sniper</a> -- and Thursday's impending Spy and Sniper class updates -- Valve is holding a free-play Memorial Day weekend for the game via <a href="http://www.steampowered.com">Steam</a>. This time it's a long one; the game will be open to all from tomorrow, May 21 through Monday, May 25.<br /><br />According to Valve, those few gamers who don't already have the multiplayer classic installed on their PCs can begin pre-loading the game files now via the Steam client. Then, come Tuesday morning, the game will politely ask if they'd like to pony up the cash to <strike>feed the addiction</strike> keep playing. <br /><br />Until tomorrow, take a moment to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/17/it-was-obvious-meet-team-fortress-2s-spy/">familiarize yourself</a> with the one character most likely to stab you in the back. We bet the Sniper wished he had.</div>

This time, players get a glimpse into the world of the Spy. Devious, brutal and womanizing ... the Spy is a force to be reckoned with. We've loved the <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/heavy-weapons-team-fortress/19523?type=flv">short</a> <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/26152.html">introduction</a> <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/24780.html">vignettes</a> Valve has developed to promote the game's classes so far, but the Spy's video is definitely our favorite of the bunch. Okay, fine -- but <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/spyupdate/day03_english.htm">a shield that prevents you</a> from getting backstabbed? Why not just allow them to turn on God Mode? However, our worries were assuaged by the latest revelation for the Sniper update, in which <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/spyupdate/english.htm">said Sniper gets <em>Julius Caesar</em>'d by a Spy</a> -- the proud recipient of yet another <em>TF2 </em>update.<br /><br />The betrayal-prone class will be getting two new tools in the update -- the Cloak and Dagger Spy Watch, which allows you to stay camouflaged indefinitely (as long as you're standing completely still) and the Dead Ringer Spy Watch, which instantly cloaks you for eight seconds when you get hit, dropping a fake corpse in your stead. Valve just sent a press release our way confirming that the upcoming Sniper update for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tf2,team-fortress-2"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a> will be a bit less, uh ... <em>upcoming</em>. The update will be available to download through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam</a> sometime later this week, as Valve could not provide us with a definite date of release for the new goods. So, what is there to look forward to?<br /><br />Well, the Sniper is going to go all Ted Nugent with a new bow and arrow, apparently, as you can see in the image above all of this text. The weapon is called The Huntsman longbow, and it will allow our fan of the long range an opportunity to pin those bothersome bobbers and weavers against the wall. Hey, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/tf2-scouts-new-shotgun-the-force-a-nature/">Scout</a>, think you're going to zig-zag all over the place? Well, not when you've been <em>bowed to the wall</em>.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/12/tf2-sniper-update-adds-touch-of-ted-nugent-available-later-this/">TF2 Sniper update adds touch of Ted Nugent, available later this week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 May 2009 22:15:00 EST. All of the monkeyshines which occurred this past April Fools' Day weren't completely without newsworthiness. For instance, <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2391">Valve's April 1 update</a> revealing the Sniper's newest (and fakest) armament -- weaponized jars of urine -- was a hint that the <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2394">Sniper class would be the next </a><em>Team Fortress 2</em> class to get the update treatment. In fact, Valve promises it will be the biggest update thus far, with new maps and gameplay tweaks. In addition, a second update, due to arrive before the Sniper pack, will add "some new content for all classes." Probably no jars of urine, though.<br /><br />Also, if you're a member of the incensed mob of players of the (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/team-fortress-2-for-xbox-360-patched-no-class-changes/">mostly</a>) non-updated <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/TF2/">TF2</a></em> for the 360, the latest Valve update includes word that the developer is still working to bring new content to the console. So please, put down that torch and pitchfork. You'll put someone's eye out.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/sniper-getting-next-tf2-class-update-still-working-on-360-updat/">Sniper getting next TF2 class update, still working on 360 update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 12:30:00 EST. After racking their brains and kicking around a few of different proposals, Valve has figured out how to rate servers automatically in the back end of Steam for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Team-Fortress-2/">Team Fortress 2</a></em>. Valve's Robin Walker detailed how the system will work and help players in search of a decent game (Read: Not achievement farming): New servers begin with a score of 0, each time a player connects it loses 15 points but gains 1 point per player for each minute they remain inside (with a 45 point max per user). <br /> <br /> "In short," Walker writes, "servers that have lots of players joining &amp; leaving rapidly will score badly." The rating will ensure players are walking into <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2338">honest assessments of a server's quality</a> -- sometimes server hosts write false descriptions to entice people to join. Well, with the new system those jerks can keep their phony servers because the first order of business on Valve's end is to completely "delist" them. The server breakdown (pictured above) shows last week's server statistics, ignoring all password-protected servers as well as servers had fewer than 200 connections per day. Walker also notes that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Valve/">Valve</a> will continue to improve their ability to measure these types of server problems.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/03/13/valve-to-rate-team-fortress-2-servers/">Big Download</a>]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/alert-to-all-jerks-valve-to-rate-team-fortress-2-servers/">Alert to all Jerks: Valve to rate Team Fortress 2 servers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Mar 2009 19:45:00 EST. Valve has officially revealed the second new Scout weapon included in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/tf2-scout-update-includes-new-bat-energy-drink-3-additional-ma/">upcoming <em>Team Fortress 2</em> update</a>. Called the <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/scoutupdate/force-a-nature.htm">Force-a-Nature</a>, the double-barreled shotgun packs a wallop so big it will knock back any enemy it hits, even the Heavies. If fired in the air, it will also knock back the Scout himself, essentially giving him a <em>third</em> jump.<br /><br />Don't get too worked up though, like most other unlockable weapons in the game, the gun comes with a caveat. The Force-a-Nature only has two shots -- makes sense, given it's a double-barreled shotgun and all -- and it reloads slowly.<br /><br />Additionally, Valve has posted a poll asking players to choose which Scout update item should be released first: The Bonk energy drink, the Sandman bat or the Force-a-Nature? Cast your vote <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/scoutupdate/force-a-nature.htm">here</a>. You'd better do it quickly because the update is expected to drop sometime today!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/02/23/new-shotgun-for-team-fortress-2-scout-class-revealed/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/tf2-scouts-new-shotgun-the-force-a-nature/">TF2 Scout's new shotgun: The Force-a-Nature</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Feb 2009 12:50:00 EST. "We don't have the bandwidth." That's the explanation Valve co-founder Gabe Newell offered up when poked by <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170096">1UP</a> for answers regarding the company's lack of PlayStation 3 support. Put another way: "We don't have PlayStation developers," marketing director Doug Lombardi explained. While hardly a new revelation, Valve's <em>dilemma</em> continues to prevent the company from creating in-house PS3 content.<br /><br />In the short term, this means -- for the last time -- no <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead"><em>Left 4 Dead</em></a> on PS3, and also, no <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tf2"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/22/xbox-360-tf2-getting-yummy-sandvich-by-years-end/">updates</a>. But...? Uh-uh. "They're not doing ongoing development on <em>The Orange Box</em> for the PS3." <em>They</em>, of course, is EA, developer of the PS3 version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/orange-box/"><em>The Orange Box</em></a>. <div align="left"><strong>Update:</strong> It seems GameSpot has pulled this story, though as of this update the story headline is still displayed on <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/index.html?navclk=xbox360">GameSpot's 360 page</a>. For what it's worth, <a href="http://kotaku.com/5040417/team-fortress-2-updates-coming-to-xbox-360-later-this-year">Kotaku</a> is reporting the same thing, so we're not sure exactly why GameSpot's article has been pulled. See our original post below.</div>
<br /> Gamers with the Xbox 360 version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/team-fortress-2"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a> have had kind of a rough time. First we see the PC version get Medic updates and achievements, then the Pyro gets the same treatment, and <em>now</em> our good friend the Heavy is getting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/team-fortress-2-bulks-up-with-whopping-heavy-update-august-19/">his own update</a> (not to mention the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/team-fortress-2-meet-the-sandvich/">Sandvich</a>). We 360 gamers have sat idly by as PC gamers get to romp about with new weapons and there's a even a new map on the way. It's time to cheer up fanboys, because Valve has <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26557630&amp;tag=;title;1">confirmed to GameSpot</a> that <em>all</em> of the <em>TF2 </em>content released thus far should be hitting the Xbox 360 before the end of the year.<br /><br />And now be sad again, because it looks like it's going to cost you. In an <a href="http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/08/21/gc08-one-on-one-with-valves-gabe-newell/">interview</a> with VideoGaming247, Valve boss Gabe Newell spoke about the updates saying, "On the consoles, they want us to charge money for them, because that's in their model, and our model is very much more to grow the community by giving out free updates." Boy, we like the sound of Valve's model much better. From the sound of things, it's soundling like Microsoft wants Valve to charge for their content even if Valve doesn't want to (now <em>that</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/09/microsoft-wont-let-new-gow-maps-be-free/">sounds familiar</a>).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/22/team-fortress-2-updates-on-360-this-year-for-a-price/">Team Fortress 2 updates on 360 this year (for a price) [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Aug 2008 17:00:00 EST. The perpetually patched <a href="http://steamgames.com/tf2/heavy/"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a> is about to get its "largest update ever" (dare we say <em>heaviest</em>?) next week on August 19. In the lead-up, Valve is <a href="http://steamgames.com/tf2/heavy/">releasing new information and screenshots</a> about the patch each day, as well as a "special installment to the 'Meet the Team' series of video shorts," according to the <a href="http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=posts&amp;id=1740&amp;cc=US">press release</a>. The community map <a href="http://steamgames.com/tf2/heavy/cp_steel.htm">cp_steel</a> was revealed on the first day.<br /><br />Besides new weapons and achievements for the Heavy class, the next update will include new multiplayer maps and a "brand new gameplay mode," possibly related to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/next-tf2-update-may-feature-new-type-of-environment/">new type of environment</a> we heard about earlier this month. As with the other updates, Valve is offering a free <em>Team Fortress 2</em> weekend starting August 22 at 2pm ET.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/team-fortress-2-bulks-up-with-whopping-heavy-update-august-19/">Team Fortress 2 bulks up with whopping Heavy update August 19</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 04:00:00 EST. Yes, we're still playing Valve's classy, cartoonish shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/team-fortress-2"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a>. We'll continue to do so for as long as the game keeps receiving updates -- and there's at least one more on the way. Posting on the official <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=1729"><em>Team Fortress 2</em> blog</a>, Valve's Jakob Jungels has suggested that our multiplayer mileu may be due for a makeover. <br /><br />"One of the things we're looking at for the next update is the creation of a new type of environment for our levels to be built in," he wrote. "We're pretty happy with the way our environments have turned out so far, but as we create more and more maps with these achievement packs, we want our level designers to have more to work with in terms of giving their settings a unique look."<br /><br />Jungels notes that before making it into the game, each potential environment has to satisfy a list of requirements. Does it allow for new gameplay? Does it support existing gameplay types? <em>Is it completely awesome?</em> We anxiously await a chorus of yeses.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/next-tf2-update-may-feature-new-type-of-environment/">Next TF2 update may feature 'new type of environment'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Aug 2008 17:50:00 EST. First the Medic, then Pyro, and now Mr. Heavy. Valve has <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=1670">announced </a>that the Heavy class is next in line for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/team-fortress-2"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a> class updates (i.e. new weapons and achievements). Additionally, Valve said it will "open up the process a little" in talking about how the update is designed. The goal of the update is to "make the Heavy more viable when he has no Medic to pair with" but in a manner that does not significantly change the Heavy's role in the game. We're interested to see how those ideas and constrants translate to new firepower.<br /><br />[Thanks, Andrew R!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/02/heavy-is-next-in-line-for-team-fortress-2-update/">Heavy is next in line for Team Fortress 2 update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 01:00:00 EST. The origins of said image are unknown -- perhaps it's a leak from Valve's vault? A convincing photoshop from a dedicated fan? Perhaps Ian is in possession of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StumbleUpon">a magical StumbleUpon toolbar</a>, capable of stumbling <em>into the future</em>?<br /><br />While it certainly looks convincing, we're leaning towards "convincing photoshop" -- especially considering most of the text is copied and Elmer's school glued from <a href="http://www.steampowered.com/pyro/">Valve's official Pyro update</a>. As credible as the new weapons (such as the silenced PPK and the Garrote) and achievements (Joykill: Backstab a laughing enemy) look, we doubt the legitimacy of these supposed details about <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=6I7VwjelAIA&amp;feature=related">our masked, nicotine-infused friend</a>.<br /><br /><strong>Update: </strong>Given the final line of the copyright information at the bottom of the page, which reads "Hoax by Ka anin :P!", we're ready to go ahead and file this one under B, for <a href="http://www.thefreedictionary.com/bunco">bunko</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/28/rumor-team-fortress-2-spy-update-details-leaked/">Rumor: Team Fortress 2 Spy update details leaked</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 Jun 2008 16:00:00 EST. This is probably a bit old, but we never tire of game-related origami, especially for <em>Team Fortress 2</em>. A sentry gun and paperclip dispenser? Priceless. Instructions can be found in the <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=694162">middle of this forum page</a>. Don't forget it's a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/reminder-tf2-pyro-update-now-available-free-to-play-this-weeke/">free <em>TF2 </em>weekend</a>. A new update <em>Team Fortress 2</em> is now available via Steam and includes major updates to the Pyro class. The basic flamethrower has alternate fire compression blast, the hadouken taunt now kills people and, most importantly, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/see-tf2s-pyros-new-weapons-achievements/">three new weapons</a> have been added, to be unlocked by conquering the 35 new Pyro achievements.<br /><br />The update also adds two community maps (cp_fastlane and ctf_turbine). Don't forget, <em>Team Fortress 2</em> is free to play all weekend starting tomorrow. Although <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/team-fortress-2-pyro-class-next-in-line-for-upgrade/">Pyro is getting an upgrade</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/team-fortress-2-pyro-update-coming-thursday/">this Thursday</a> in the game, it's the Sniper who gets the mini-film treatment above. <br /><br />Now we just need Pyro, Spy and Medic to get their episodes and this whole affair can come to an end ... although we wouldn't mind future clips featuring the whole cast in hilariously psychotic situations. This week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/08/weekly-webcomic-wrapup-has-a-snake-in-a-box/">webcomic wrapup</a> was over before it started. There's something ever-so beautiful about Christopher Robin's fantasy being played out through our fantasy of capturing intelligence, building sentry guns, and using a flamethrower in a virtual, carefree environment. Our hats are officially off to you, <a href="http://fanboys-online.com/index.php?comic=280"><em>Fanboys-Online</em></a>.<br /><br />Second and third place go to <a href="http://www.2pstart.com/2008/06/04/just-what-the-doctor-ordered/"><em>2P Start</em></a> and <a href="http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/6/6/"><em>Penny Arcade</em></a>, respectively. Don't misinterpret that headline -- the much anticipated update for Valve's cartoony multiplayer run-and-gunner, <em>Team Fortress 2</em>, will not see the dismissal of the game's most <a href="http://www.homestarrunner.com/trogdor.html">burninating</a> class. No, we simply mean that Valve has revealed one of the unlockable weapons for the Pyro: the mighty Axtinguisher. Well, the <em>sometimes</em> mighty Axtinguisher -- <a href="http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53565">Valve explained in a recent Steam blog post</a> that the weapon only deals half as much damage as the standard fire axe, unless used against engulfed opponents, in which case it deals a guaranteed critical hit.<br /><br />We've yet to learn the achievements required to unlock this powerful armament, or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/team-fortress-2-pyro-class-next-in-line-for-upgrade/">the other equipment that will be made available to the flame-obsessed archetype</a> -- though in the same news post, Valve confirmed the Pyro-centric update will be accompanied by <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/26152.html">one of their</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/19/meet-the-team-fortress-2-scout-again/">popular video introductions</a> for the most steady-handed <em>TF2</em> character, titled "Meet The Sniper". Also, Valve confirmed that they've "almost completely wrapped up" the update. Following the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/team-fortress-2-to-get-unlockable-weapons-new-game-mode/">generous upgrades</a> given to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tf2">Team Fortress 2</a></em> Medics earlier this year, it now appears that the Pyro class is next to be doused in flame-retardant achievements and fiery, unlockable weapons. Citing the latest issue of PC Gamer, <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=189981">CVG</a> also reports that Valve plans similar additions for the game's remaining classes, though the timing of these future updates has not yet been revealed.<br /><br />Likewise a mystery is what Pyro players can expect from the new achievement-fueled equipment roll out, though we expect it to mirror <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/team-fortress-2-unlockable-medic-weapons-detailed/">what was given to Medics</a>, only with less healing and more toasting <em>anything that moves</em>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2008/06/03/pyro-class-in-team-fortress-2-to-gain-achievements-and-unlockabl/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/team-fortress-2-pyro-class-next-in-line-for-upgrade/">Team Fortress 2 Pyro class next in line for upgrade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 17:25:00 EST. While PC owners have been gushing over the new Medic achievements and weapons upgrades in <em>Team Fortress 2</em>, patrons of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 Orange Box have gone without any <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/team-fortress-2-for-xbox-360-patched-no-class-changes/">non-technical</a> updates. Valve Software marketing director Doug Lombardi told <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/valve-releases-team-fortress-2-gold-rush-update-new-medic-weapo/">Shacknews</a> that information on the downloadable content for Xbox 360 is forthcoming.<br /><br />"How and when is still sort of being determined, on pricing and that kind of stuff. On the PC it's sort of wide open, you can release stuff whenever you want. On the console there's a little bit more of a pathway," he said, later adding, "Unfortunately I don't know that any of that will make it to the PS3." Valve did not port Orange Box to the PS3 in-house, instead giving it to EA UK - trust us, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/11/valves-gabe-newell-says-ps3-a-waste-of-time/">that's</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/the-orange-box-delayed-on-ps3/">a good</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/25/ps3-version-of-orange-box-might-be-downright-unplayable/">story to</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/todays-most-comparative-video-orange-box-ps3-vs-xbox-360/">read</a> up on.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/">Team Fortress 2: Goldrush</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/#755314"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/team-fortress-2-goldrush1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/#755315"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/team-fortress-2-goldrush_screen_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/#755316"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/team-fortress-2-goldrush2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/#755317"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/team-fortress-2-goldrush3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/team-fortress-2-dlc-coming-to-xbox-360-maybe-not-ps3/">Team Fortress 2 DLC coming to Xbox 360, maybe not PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 May 2008 12:55:00 EST. The <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tf2">Team Fortress 2</a> </em>Gold Rush update is now available for free download via Steam. The update includes the Gold Rush map with its own gameplay style dubbed Payload. Perhaps more important than the map, this update marks the first set of new achievements and unlockable weapons. <br /><br />The first class to receive the update is the Medic, who can earn three new weapons -- Blutsauger, Kritzkrieg and Ubersaw -- obtained by earning 12, 24 or all 36 new medic achievements, respectively. All the new achievements, including a complete Medic icon set (PNG files) can be found at the <a href="http://www.steampowered.com/goldrush/">Gold Rush site</a>.<br /><strong><br />Update: </strong>It's also worth noting that this weekend, May 2 - 4, Steam users can play <em>Team Fortress 2 </em>for free. That includes the Gold Rush update. You can pre-load the game now.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/">Team Fortress 2: Goldrush</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/#755314"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/team-fortress-2-goldrush1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/#755315"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/team-fortress-2-goldrush_screen_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/#755316"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/team-fortress-2-goldrush2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/team-fortress-2-goldrush/#755317"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/team-fortress-2-goldrush3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/valve-releases-team-fortress-2-gold-rush-update-new-medic-weapo/">Valve releases Team Fortress 2 Gold Rush update, new Medic weapons [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 22:43:00 EST. Well, to be precise, the team-based shooter's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/team-fortress-2-to-get-unlockable-weapons-new-game-mode/">new Goldrush map and unlockable Medic weapons</a> took center stage, and the pizza provided just the right ambiance. ShackNews got their pizza-stained hands on the new offerings, and also had a chance to talk with Valve's Robin Walker about plans for unlockable weapons for the other classes (they should be coming "faster"), difficulty in balancing new weapons (there's a "trade-off"), and plans for other news maps with the Payload gameplay like Goldrush ("you have a moving fortress"). <br /><br />The medic is the first class to get the new weapons - unlock a series of class-based achievements to earn each of the three new toys, including the Blutsaugher ("a new syringe gun" that draws health from enemies), the Critzcrieg (a "new medigun" that switches up the ubercharge), and the Ubersaw (melee attacks charge your medigun). The update <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/27/new-team-fortress-2-pc-content-due-mid-april/">should hit sometime in April</a>; still no word on whether any TF2 downloadable content will make it to the consoles. <br /><br />

There's no such thing as a free lunch, but Valve's Doug Lombardi figures you already paid your meal ticket when you purchased <em>Team Fortress 2</em> on the PS3 or Xbox 360. That's why he wants all future downloadable content for the console versions to be <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=93883">completely free of charge</a>. <br /><br />Of course, it's not entirely up to him, but Lombardi hopes to get at least some content -- like the upcoming map packs -- over to players at no additional charge. According to him, DLC isn't about earning increased return on games, but rather about "keeping the customer happy." Lombardi tells Eurogamer that "free is the way to go. The gamers play the game, they want to keep playing the game, so we've collected their fifty bucks at the start, and once they're in the park, they can ride any ride they want in the park. So, for us that's been the philosophy." And a DLC philosophy we whole-heartily agree with. But nothing is set in stone just yet as Microsoft has certain rules pertaining to free content and we all know how much <em>Orange Box</em> publisher EA loves to make a quick buck off of DLC. In a perfect world we would see <em>TF2</em> DLC for free, but we have a feeling we're in for another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/09/microsoft-wont-let-new-gow-maps-be-free/">Hidden Fronts disagreement</a> either between Valve and Microsoft or between Valve and EA.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/valve-hopes-to-release-upcoming-tf2-dlc-for-free/">Valve hopes to release upcoming TF2 DLC for free</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 10:45:00 EST. An update for <span style="font-style: italic;">Team Fortress 2</span> has come to the Xbox Live. Unlike the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/02/team-fortress-2-pc-update-balances-classes-introduces-tournamen/">PC patch</a> from over the weekend, there are no balance changes to the classes themselves. Instead, a number of glitches have been fixed, as well as the inclusion of rumble for weapons and the addition of 10- and 14-player team sizes. No indication of a PlayStation 3 patch, so if you've gotten an update, let us know in the comments below. Full details (via <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=659188&amp;page=2">Steam forums</a>) after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/team-fortress-2-for-xbox-360-patched-no-class-changes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Team Fortress 2 for Xbox 360 patched, no class changes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/team-fortress-2-for-xbox-360-patched-no-class-changes/">Team Fortress 2 for Xbox 360 patched, no class changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Mar 2008 23:30:00 EST. We went as far as to call out Valve on their lack of information support surrounding the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/orange-box">Orange Box</a></em> for consoles. But today, we eat our words. Valve developer Kerry hopped onto the <a href="http://forums.xbox.com/4/18857969/ShowPost.aspx#18857233">Xbox.com forums</a> to inform the masses about the <em>TF2</em> update and tell us exactly what it fixes. We've posted Kerry's complete list of changes after the break as we're sure our fellow <em>TF2</em> exploiters are ever so curious to know which exploits in their vast exploit arsenal are no longer effective. Anyway, check out the update list as we go on to officially retract out "evil Valve" comment that we made yesterday. We acknowledge that our name calling was a bit much, but we still stand behind our request at having some sort of Valve supported news hub for getting <em>Orange Box</em> updates. We still cool?<br /><br />[Thanks, Will]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/valve-gives-us-team-fortress-2-update-specifics/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Valve gives us Team Fortress 2 update specifics</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/valve-gives-us-team-fortress-2-update-specifics/">Valve gives us Team Fortress 2 update specifics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 03 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST. Check out all the details <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/valve-gives-us-team-fortress-2-update-specifics/">here</a>.<br /><br />Recently, Valve's magical <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/orange-box">Orange Box</a></em> received a title update with its sole purpose being fixification of <em>Team Fortress 2</em>. Though, sadly, we don't know exactly what changes the update made seeing that Valve has no central news hub for Xbox 360 <em>Orange Box</em> owners. All we get are PC centric updates <a href="http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=news&amp;id=1469&amp;cc=US">like this</a>. Evil Valve. But we're guessing the update has something to do with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/12/team-fortress-2-update-and-dlc-in-very-near/">changes</a> that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/tf2-to-see-gameplay-changes-new-achievements-and-possibly-new/">were</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/more-tf2-tweaks-for-pyro-soldier/">mentioned</a> a few months back. We're also hearing from our oh so reliable X3F tipsters that the <em>TF2</em> update adds the option for 14 player games, auto-balance management and other general class enhancements. Again, we can't be exactly sure what modifications were made seeing that Valve doesn't have a central news hub. Did we get that point across yet? Ahem, Valve, we need you to update us on things like this. Mmkay? And until they do, if while surfing the internets you spot a list or breakdown of what changes were put in place with the latest auto-update, please <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tips/">drop us a line</a>. Thanks much.<br /><br />[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/02/latest-team-fortress-2-update-is-now-live/">Latest Team Fortress 2 update is now live [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 02 Mar 2008 15:00:00 EST. Thankfully, Valve isn't using their lighter server load as an excuse to let <em>Team Fortress 2</em> go to the dogs -- <a href="http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=news&amp;id=1464&amp;cc=US">they just released a patch</a> upon an unsuspecting populous of <em>TF2</em> junkies, adding a number of new matchmaking features and tweaking a few minor gameplay quirks.<br /><br />We've got a complete list of changes after the jump, but here's a few highlights: A Tournament mode has been added, complete with a team creation UI and win/loss tracker. Sorting through custom games is now easier, as server hosts can now add searchable description tags to their rooms. Most importantly, players who tire of being on the receiving end of high explosive weaponry will be pleased to hear that the maximum ammo capacities for the <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=Mq-XaBmRsg8">Soldier</a> and <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=rxps--huGKY">Demoman</a> classes have been sharply reduced (much to the chagrin of rocket-jumpers and Scotsmen, no doubt).<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/02/team-fortress-2-pc-update-balances-classes-introduces-tournamen/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Team Fortress 2 PC update balances classes, introduces tournament mode</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/02/team-fortress-2-pc-update-balances-classes-introduces-tournamen/">Team Fortress 2 PC update balances classes, introduces tournament mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 02 Mar 2008 14:00:00 EST. Whaddyaknow? We weren't the only ones to get floating pink hearts in our eyes thinking of <em>Team Fortress 2</em> on Valentine's Day. It's not enough that Valve dropped <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/major-team-fortress-2-update-adds-badlands-tomorrow/">a major update</a> for the shooter on us today, but Alexandria Neonakis has whipped up five incredible Valentine's Day cards for your special someone (and if they'd appreciate a <em>TF2</em> Valentine, they're a keeper!). We've covered <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/14/a-colossally-romantic-valentine-also-wow-and-katamari-valenti/">her other amazing Valentine's</a> before, so you've got a nice selection to choose from if <em>shooting cartoons in the face</em> isn't their idea of romantic.<br /><br />[Thanks, Kunikos]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/team-fortress-2-valentines-day-cards/">Team Fortress 2 Valentine's Day cards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. The romantic Lotharios at Valve have a certain something special planned for you on Valentine's Day, tomorrow. No, not cake you silly goose, this is way more romantic. They want to take you on a trip, to an exotic map called "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/team-fortress-2-to-get-badlands-map-remake-medic-tweaks/">Badlands</a>." But it won't be just you; they've invited 9 of your friends (pictured above) so you can all spend a wonderful V-Day together, in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/TF2/">Team Fortress 2</a></em>, fragging the night away. <br /><br />Tomorrow's update isn't simply a new map though. They're also updating the Dustbowl, Granary, and CTF Well maps with various tweaks as well as improvements to the Source Engine and SourceTV, all in what they're saying is the "largest update" since the game's launch last Fall. It's still unknown if the updates (and new map!) will make their way to the console versions, so we've asked Valve to weigh in on it. Give them some time to get back to us, and we'll let you know what they say, deal?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/major-team-fortress-2-update-adds-badlands-tomorrow/">Major Team Fortress 2 update adds Badlands tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Feb 2008 18:58:00 EST.
