It's kind of like getting the plate with extra gravy.

PSN highlights include Jet Set Radio ($7 standard, $4.90 PS Plus), a bundle of Sonic 1 and 2 ($5, free), a Hell Yeah! bundle with two DLC packs ($15, $10.50) and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown Complete Edition ($20, $15).

We covered the Sega offers in the XBLA Black Friday sales post, but it's nice to see that still includes a handful of Sega Vintage Collections, Space Channel 5: Part 2 and Daytona USA, all for half off at 400 MS Points.

iOS gets a smattering of games, such as Crazy Taxi and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2, both for $3. Android gets two games, Sonic 4: Episode 2 for $3 and Virtua Tennis Challenge for $2.

Take a peek at the entire list below.
Continue reading Sega's Thanksgiving Day sale is a digital feast

Sega's Thanksgiving Day sale is a digital feast originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Nov 2012 19:45:00 EST. If waking up at 5am in the morning this Friday to grab some of those deals on video games at Gamestop doesn't sound like your idea of a good time, then good news times two: One, you're completely sane. Second, GameStop is actually opening at 12:01am on Thanksgiving night/Friday morning, so if you can wake yourself out of your turkey coma to go and buy some games, you can get all your shopping done before the moon even comes out.

Best Buy is also opening up at 12am on Friday morning for its doorbuster sale, as is Target, despite some protests from employees and their families. Toys R Us is the real kicker, though: Its sales are starting at 9pm on Thursday night, hardly enough time for the football games to even finish before the holiday sales begin.

You can see all of the available deals on video games, online and offline, in our big, bad Black Friday deals post for this year. If you do head out to buy some items right away at midnight, maybe offer to buy the employees you see there some doughnuts or coffee -- if they're out there all night, they'll probably need it.
Retailers opening up at midnight (or even earlier) for Black Friday originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 00:00:00 EST. Sick and tired of your neighbor Steve Grabowski always showing off with his fancy Pac-Man Championship Edition on iPhone? First and foremost, tell Grabowski to shove it, but more importantly, know that you'll soon be able to afford your very own copy. Namco's Thanksgiving Week slash Black Friday slash Cyber Monday iOS sales are offering dramatically discounted versions of excellent games like Pac-Man CE and Galaga Remix, and the deals kick off at 12AM PST today ... so they're totally live right now.

Said deals shall stay that way through November 28, just before midnight PST. At very least, the discounted wares should give you a brief reprieve from that jerk neighbor.
Continue reading Namco Bandai discounting iOS stable for Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday (but not Super Tuesday)

Namco Bandai discounting iOS stable for Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday (but not Super Tuesday) originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Nov 2011 18:30:00 EST. They celebrate different periods of American history, and shooting a bunch of banditos and varmints is pretty far away from ... not dying of starvation.

Actually, there is one nice way to connect the two -- the "gluttony" theme, but Rockstar done already used it in its announcement of the event, which runs from Thursday through Sunday. "Stuff Yourself with 4 Days of Red Dead Redemption Double XP." So clever! That leaves us with, like, "this deal is no turkey!" We're going to go cry into a pecan pie now. Enjoy some RDR this weekend.
Redeem double XP in Red Dead Redemption this weekend originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 21:00:00 EST. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is getting a PC release right around Thanksgiving this year -- kind of. According to the game's official Facebook page, the North American PC version will only be available at Walmart over the Thanksgiving weekend, which means if you want it, you'll have to brave the unwashed crowds to get it (or just send the scariest member of your family). After that first weekend, it'll presumably go on sale elsewhere, so you can wait the extra week if you so choose.

The rest of the world doesn't have to deal with any exclusivity agreements -- the PC version will be on sale in Australia and Asia on November 24, and in Europe on November 26.

Just a few hours after Nintendo, Sony has prepared a Black Friday sales statement of its own. SCEA's Patrick Seybold wrote in a press release: "PlayStation 3 demand was at an all time high with the system selling more than 440,000 units for the week ending 11/29/09." While shy of Wii's numbers, the figure is quite impressive, considering that's more than the number of systems sold in the entire month of October -- the same month that the PS3-exclusive Uncharted 2 came out.
Retailers offered a number of PS3 bundles during the holiday weekend, adding a number of free games and movies to the system's standard $299 price tag. That, coupled with an ad campaign that totally doesn't creep us out, certainly helped Sony's fortunes this year.
Sony thanks 440,000 customers for giving it money during Black Friday week originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Dec 2009 00:01:00 EST. Perhaps you've been playing an online session of LittleBigPlanet and seen a Sackboy (or Sackgirl) with his (or her) head stuck inside of a turkey. You're probably curious as to how this bold fashion statement came to pass. Were they searching for a lost meat thermometer? Had they been the victim of a cruel practical joke? Were they afflicted with the rare, but deadly Meleagris Oblongatus virus?

As it turns out, the real source of these turkeyheaded individuals isn't really that scintillating. Media Molecule handed them out free of charge last Thanksgiving -- and, according to a recent post on PlayStation.Blog, the offer stands this year as well. Hop onto LBP to get your fowl chapeau from the LittleBigStore, but act quick -- it'll only be available for "a limited time."
Gobble up this LittleBigPlanet Turkey costume before it's gone originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 17:15:00 EST. Once again, Cryptic Studios is giving you a great excuse not to spend time with friends and family over a holiday weekend. The developer's superheroic MMO, Champions Online, will be free-to-play from November 26-30 as a promotion for the game's second free content expansion since its launch in September.

The free update, which is titled Nemesis Confrontation and launches November 24, will include new costumes and perks, and tasks players with escaping from a hostile intergalactic prison -- a mission made much more difficult by the facility's unfriendly inhabitants, seen above. You'll also face off against the Shadow Destroyer (the party responsible for your hero's unrequested detention) and even your user-generated Nemesis. Sounds like a pretty dangerous calling -- but nowhere near as perilous as the crushing throng of Black Friday shoppers that awaits you at your local mall.
It's rare we quote someone extensively for a post, but we thought this update from PlayStation Home's Locust_Star speaks for itself:

"In celebration of the impending Turkey Day, users will approach the giant stone turkey in Central Plaza and, of course, pledge their allegiance to the almighty Meleagris Gallopavo by stating 'Gobble gobble' and/or other assorted turkey-isms ... You will be given a chance to chase a bunch of wily turkeys around Central Plaza. If you can manage to catch them all, you will unlock some truly hilarious rewards that are sure to make you an object of envy amongst your peers."

Yeah, the PS3 really can do everything.
Continue reading Turkeys to invade PlayStation Home this week

Turkeys to invade PlayStation Home this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 20:00:00 EST. During last year's Thanksgiving holiday week, the console shifted 350,000 units in the U.S., even though shortages were pretty major at the time. With more Wiis in stores this year, that number jumped to 800,000. In a single freakin' week. To put that in perspective, Nintendo sold 803,000 Wiis in the whole of October. Italics. Yikes.

Satoru Iwata broke the happy news in an interview with Reuters, adding that "When the economy is strong, people tend to buy three things from the top of their wishlist. But when things are bad, people often buy only the first thing on their list. Fortunately for us a lot of shoppers put our products at the top of their list." That's a pretty sizeable "nyah!" to the competition.

[Via Joystiq]
Wii serious business during Thanksgiving week originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 18:26:00 EST.
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata is rolling in six-dollar bills right about now. (Okay, since they don't exist, a bunch of fives and ones.) Speaking to Reuters, Iwata revealed that 800,000 Wiis were sold in the US during the week of November 24-30. That's up nearly half a million units over last year's 350,000 consoles sold during the same period, according to Nintendo's sales data.

Iwata sees the downturn in the US economy as an upturn for sales of Wii. "When the economy is strong, people tend to buy three things from the top of their wish list. But when things are bad, people often buy only the first thing on their list," he remarked, concluding, "Fortunately for us a lot of shoppers put our products at the top of their list."

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime stated in October that Wii production was ramping up for the holidays, but still probably wouldn't meet demand. There must have been at least an additional 450,000 consoles for shoppers to snap up Thanksgiving week, though - but will that be the extent of the holiday production bump? With Wal-Mart.com today touting tens of thousands of the system for sale, we'll have to wait for full holiday sales numbers to see how much ramping Nintendo really upped.

Today, rather than dedicate this space to talking about some DS-related minutiae, we're leaving it open for discussion about your Thanksgiving plans, and how the DS slots into your Turkey Day schedule. Do you plan to spend a quiet moment getting further through Chrono Trigger? Converting Granny to Brain Age? Playing a spot of wireless Mario Kart DS with cousins?

Maybe you don't plan to pick up your beloved handheld at all. To which we say: hey, Thanksgiving is a time for coming together, and that extends to people and their DSes as well! Er, probably. I don't know, I'm British. This is all one big mystery to me.

By the way, we'll still be posting today, so if you do get bored at any point, feel free to poke your head in.
To those of you who celebrate it, happy Thanksgiving! And happy Thursday to everybody else! We'll be running a reduced shedule today, but we'll still be there, in the form of a few posts and also in your hearts (perhaps). Anyway, let's talk Turkey Day, and more specifically what role gaming will take in your Thanksgiving celebrations. As this is a time for families and togetherness, the Wii is probably the ideal Thanksgiving console. What will you be playing between mouthfuls of turkey and cranberry sauce?
Wii Warm Up: Turkey Day originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 10:30:00 EST. It's Thanksgiving Day here in the states, which means that unless Lara Croft and Nathan Drake have a love child and proceed to shoot up a shopping mall, you're probably not going to hear a whole lot from us today. Even Ludwig, a South African, likes to pretend he's sharing in the festivities with a little faux-turkey he makes every year from hut roof shavings and leopard paws.

But we wanted to have a place for you, the Joystiq Biomass, to commune with each other and share what you're thankful for in gaming this year. It can be a developer, a favorite game, a new mechanic, anything: It's your choice. Heck, we don't even care if you're bursting to give thanks for something non-gaming, as long as we're all together.

(Oh, and sorry about ending the headline with a preposition. Hopefully next year you'll be able to give thanks for better Joystiq writers.)

[Update: Hey, how's about you do me a solid and not be total trolls if you're posting here. Thanksgiving this year will include both turkey and time travel, a magical cocktail made possible by Square Enix. The company said that it'll ship its DS throwback to SNES favorite Chrono Trigger in North America on November 25, just two days before families sit down for the annual feast.

Giving players plenty to keep them busy while fighting off the adverse effects of tryptophan, Chrono Trigger's DS debut promises new dungeons, touchable controls and an arena mode. Additionally, as the RPG keeps with the original's pixelated sense of style, Square Enix has all but ensured that Thanksgiving 2008 will play out much the same way as it did some thirteen years prior, as we ignore seldom seen family members in favor of the more interesting trio of Crono, Lucca and Frog.
Chrono Trigger turns back DS clock on November 25 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Aug 2008 16:45:00 EST. Add the Sterns to the great family bands of popular culture. Put us on a flashing marquee like the Osmonds, Jacksons, and von Trapps that came before. With a rotating lineup of three generations, a band dog who curls up next to the drummer, and enough hijinks for a Monkees plot, we've toured across the country from San Francisco to Boston. It doesn't matter to us if our fame is virtual and our fans digital; Rock Band was a hit at our annual Thanksgiving gathering.

Before I left the West Coast, I loaded up a dedicated carry-on with an Xbox 360, Wii, and the full complement of power supplies, video cables, and controllers. I made it through airport security without any problems. (And on the flight home, I wondered how many Rock Band kits the TSA had been screening.)

Like last year, the Wii was still popular. But we mostly stuck with Wii Sports. Even casual gamers have a glut of titles to wade through; we never opened Zack and Wiki and only briefly tried EA Playground and Rayman Rabbids 2.

Instead, Rock Band filled most of our game time. While I thought it'd be fun to try with my family, I never expected it to be "this year's Wii" as my sister said. Disguised as a rhythm game, Rock Band is a sleeper family hit. Every day, we joked about "getting the band back together" before assembling that evening's players.
Continue reading Rock Band and turkey: A Thanksgiving family test, part 2

Rock Band and turkey: A Thanksgiving family test, part 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Nov 2007 09:03:00 EST. It seems that Black Friday was very, very, very good to Nintendo, as both the DS Lite and the Wii performed quite impressively in the U.S. over the holiday week.

Nintendo has announced that it sold 653,000 DS Lites over the week of November 18-24, setting a new record for the portable, for Nintendo, and for the entire industry. The number of units moved is record-breaking, exceeding the industry's previous record, also held by Nintendo with the Game Boy Advance's sales during Thanksgiving 2005.

The Wii also performed quite admirably, selling 350,000 units, a number topped only by the console's launch week. No word on how these sales figures compare to Sony or Microsoft's, but it's not like it's a competition or anything, right?

Update: Specified sales figures as pertaining to the U.S., and clarified the record as industry-wide.

Read -- Nintendo Sales Go Through the Roof During Thanksgiving Week [GameDaily]
Read -- Nintendo Has Its Biggest Week Of Sales... Much like the child above, we found ourselves completely ravaging all parts of our turkey, dining on its meat and eventually collapsing in our chair. It probably didn't help that we had some wine with dinner, since the two made us incredibly drowsy. We still can barely move, as we type this post out by using a long stick and slapping it against our keyboard while we lay on the couch. We're not sure if we're going to be able to move until Sunday, at least.

What about all of you who celebrated the holiday with us? How are you holding up? With today being a holiday, we wondered if you were bringing the Wii into the mix? The strategic thing would be to bust out the console and get your game on before stuffing yourself with mashed potatoes, turkey and cranberry sauce, though. We would never dare tell you how to live. But, that is if you in fact plan on actually playing the console with family and friends.

View Poll

Wii Fanboy Poll: Are you and the family playing Wii today? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 13:30:00 EST. MapleStory is one of those "free" online worlds that earns its keep by charging users for in-game items (the same business model practiced by Habbo Hotel). So it's nice to hear that Nexon, the Korean company behind the MMO, is starting a tradition of offering Black Friday sales on the world's most popular items.

The sales will run from this Friday (you know, Black Friday), through Sunday, but only for short intervals at a time. In addition, special, rare items will be sold each day for one hour only. Check out the entire Black Friday sales schedule after the break. Happy Turkey Day, Maple citizens.
Continue reading MapleStory holds in-game Black Friday sales

MapleStory holds in-game Black Friday sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 13:01:00 EST. While things like LOLcatz and coffee definitely make the list (oh right, and our families and friends, we guess), we wanted to show a little appreciation for the Wii as well. The Nintendo Wii Fanboy staff was thus asked what about the Wii we are most thankful for. The following is what happens when you have a staff with the collective maturity level of 37% (calculated by science).

Continue reading What we're thankful for: Wii edition

What we're thankful for: Wii edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 12:00:00 EST. Time for cold weather, family, friends, and turkey. Oh, and video games. For most Americans, Thanksgiving means a huge meal, football, and a nice long weekend. Before you settle in to your couch indentation for some holiday entertainment, why not share your plans with the rest of the class? Will you be rocking some online games with your friends? Maybe you'll see if you can convince Grandma to join your Rock Band tour. Whatever you plan to do, we want to hear it. And before the purists start flaming us, there will still be a WRUP this week, so you can rest easy.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hope it's a good one.
Share your Turkey Day gameplan with X3F originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 10:00:00 EST. Hey, it's a day about the good things in life, and it doesn't get much better than that.

On a serious note, we hope everyone out there has had a wonderful year, and especially, we hope you have a wonderful day. May each one be ever brighter! To most of our readers, today is the holiday where buttons suddenly go missing and bellies expand to proportions only seen once a year. It's a day of turkey and pie and gathering with family and friends. If you're the fan of some crummy football team, it's also a day of sports. It's a day to reflect on what you're thankful for and to relax.

So, that's what we're doing. We'll be posting today, but at a limited capacity (we have families, too!). If you find yourself near a computer, stick around and check us out today, but be sure to give your family the time of day, also. Or, better yet, share the blog with them. They want to know what's going on in your life, anyway.

Happy Thanksgiving from Wii Fanboy and, as always, thanks for reading! We really appreciate it.
Happy Turkey Day from Wii Fanboy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 08:00:00 EST. You might think that simply because it's a pumpkin and lettuce playing video games that this would be the near-perfect video game/Thanksgiving hybrid image, but take a look at the game on the table. That's right, Space Turkeys (image credit: m1a9366b). The predominantly-American Joystiq staff will be eating turkey and playing Rock Band strung out on tryptophan tomorrow, but we'll still be posting so keep an eye out on the site. We've always played games at these gatherings, and for the past three or four years, I've brought videogames. (We have a TV for DVDs and videotapes.)

In previous years, I lugged a GameCube and/or PS2 across two time zones. The most popular games have been unique or competitive titles; favorites have included Bomberman and Katamari Damacy. This year, I brought a Wii, and all the extra controllers I could find -- three Remotes and one Nunchuk.

Our Thanksgiving gathering is smaller than normal; we're missing a collection of cousins that regularly visit. But my parents, sister Alison, her boyfriend Zurich, and I have been playing the Wii, and this post documents our experience.
Continue reading A Wii Thanksgiving test on the family: Part 2

A Wii Thanksgiving test on the family: Part 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 25 Nov 2006 09:05:00 EST. Bringing the system over and saying I wanted them to test it out, the most apprehensive person wasn't the adults, but 21 year-old Meredith McSorley saying, "I'm not good at that stuff. Nothing makes you scream thanks to the deity of your choice like a free Nintendo Wii -- and that's why the Wii is a featured prize for the comedy network's Thanksgiving promotion. During 48 hours of programming between Thursday and Sunday, Comedy Central will give away a Wii every hour, so grab a plate of leftovers and settle in. After all, cold mashed potatoes taste so much better when there's a chance at a free console.
Comedy Central features Wii in "Thanxgiveaway" originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Nov 2006 11:05:00 EST. We hope you enjoy your turkey, stuffing, and awkward family situations. Second, Thanksgiving typically has a tranquilizing effect on the American news machine, so they're probably won't be much to report today. Well, that, and all of our writers will be stuffing their faces and playing videogames. But don't worry, we have things set up for both today and tomorrow. And, of course, if some Gigantor-sized news should strike, we'll be here to cover it. Enjoy your holiday, and we'll see you soon.
Happy Thanksgiving from X360F originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Nov 2006 09:00:00 EST. All Xbox Live users will be able to download the multiplayer-enabled demo today and get some gaming in ... if the tryptophan hasn't incapacitated them.

The demo comes with one map called Pirate Fortress, although if you pre-order the Lost Planet Collector's Edition on "White Friday" (11/24), you'll get a code that allows you to download an additional map called Dilapidation. If you've played the single-player demo, then you've played Pirate Fortress. It's exactly the same level (except you can't go in that sort of warehouse/garage area), with power-ups and additional weapons scattered all over the place. Dilapidation is much more closed in, set in the ruins of a burned out multi-story building with an underwater area (your player is equipped with some kind of fancy futuristic scuba gear that doesn't even release bubbles) and multiple tunnels and dark corners to hide in.
Continue reading Lost Planet Turkey Day multiplayer review

Lost Planet Turkey Day multiplayer review originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Nov 2006 04:00:00 EST. We hate that they made it so hard to get the Wii, but we love the fact that they put the deal offering an Xbox 360 for $100 up for the democratic vote, and it won hands down. With tomorrow being the day we celebrate Thanksgiving by stuffing our faces (more than usual) with turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and various delicious types of pie, we felt we'd ask what you're playing a little early. For all of our non-American readers whose country's past does not include Pilgrims and Native Americans coming together in peace, well ... be sure to rub your next exclusive holiday in our faces.

So what will it be? A little multiplayer Wii Sports with the family? Is your family interested in seeing what this Wii is all about, or is your obsession with gaming like some kind of contagious virus to them, forcing you to play Red Steel alone in the basement?
What are you playing: mid-week holiday inaugural edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Nov 2006 13:55:00 EST.

A little multiplayer action with the family? Or will you be the loner in the corner, sweater stained in gravy and pie crust crumbs as you scream "Hold It!" into your DS, receiving nothing but puzzled looks from your grandparents?
What are you playing: mid-week holiday edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Nov 2006 13:55:00 EST. Dealing with waffling salespeople at your favorite retail outlets? Concerned that it may be a while before you can get your hands on one? Relax, dearest fanboys, because a little birdie told us that GameStop and EB are getting in new shipments for this Friday and they're going to open up a few hours early -- we're hearing 7AM. There's no word on the number of units allocated for the forthcoming madness on the year's biggest shopping day, but we expect no less than preorder numbers and likely more.

On a related note -- we spoke with some folks at Best Buy also, and while they couldn't give us a firm date on when they would receive their next shipment, the did tell us that several shipments arrive at stores each week, with games, accessories, and yes, more consoles. So if you're trying to find an extra nunchuk (like we are), a Wiimote, or even to find out when your Best Buy will receive more Wii units, give them a call in the mornings -- keep fishing and you'll catch one.

1UP is also reporting that new shipments are expected, and it seems some of the commenters talked to our little birdie or one of his co-workers, as the 7AM story is repeated there.

So who's camping this week to remedy the lack of Wii?
Rumor: EB and GameStop to stock up for Black Friday originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Nov 2006 06:30:00 EST.
