EA hasn't been just kicking back, watching <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/godfather-2"><em>The Godfather II</em></a> hype build ( ... it's building, right?). The Redwood Shores studio has been tinkering with the final game during the strategic <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/11/godfather-ii-takes-hit-out-on-april-7/">delay</a>, and EA has announced today that a new multiplayer mode will be added -- <em>free</em> -- in addition to the four preexisting modes. "Don Control" will be patched into the game on release day, April 7, and features a 16-player scenario where money from the single-player game is wagered for, well, ultimate <em>Don-ination! </em>(Geddit?)<br /> <br />Confirmation of the <em>Godfather</em> freebie comes just days after Capcom was forced to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/capcom-defends-charging-for-resident-evil-5-versus-dlc/">defend</a> its $5 multiplayer patch for <em>Resident Evil 5</em> after it became clear that the modes were being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/resident-evil-5-dlc-adds-new-online-multiplayer-modes/">prepped</a> before the game's release. Was EA's decision to offer Don Control for free (and not save it for post-release premium DLC) influenced by Capcom's faux pas -- perhaps even a subtle swipe at its industry competitor? We like to think EA is tossing in the new mode out of the kindness of its heart (its very strategic, consumer value-bearing heart). Then again, this is the same company charging $10 for XBLA <em>Connect Four</em> and <em>Yahtzee</em> -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/this-wednesday-hasbro-family-game-night-matches-with-xbla/"><em>a piece</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/18/godfather-ii-release-day-patch-adds-new-multiplayer-mode/">Godfather II release day patch adds new multiplayer mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 11:08:00 EST. <div align="left">After EA released both <em>Mirror's Edge</em> and <em>Dead Space</em> demos last year, we figured EA's marketing team would be releasing demos for most all upcoming titles. Makes sense, right? Well, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-godfather-2"><em>The Godfather II</em></a> must be the exception to the game demo rule, because <em>Godfather II</em> executive producer <span class="text_article_body">Hunter Smith confirmed with <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=206055">CVG</a> that they have no plans to release a demo </span><span class="text_article_body">"at this point." </span>We guess that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/14/the-godfather-is-all-about-networking-on-facebook/">Facebook game</a> will have to fill the demo void.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />Though, fret not demo lovers, because if you're in desperate need of new game demo excitement, the XBLM will be receiving the highly anticipated <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/07/ces-09-halo-wars-releases-feb-28-demo-available-feb-5/"><em>Halo Wars</em> demo</a> in February and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/f-e-a-r-2-demo-to-cause-soiled-pants-january-22/"><em>F.E.A.R. 2 </em>demo</a> later this week. You're welcome.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/19/ea-has-no-plans-to-release-a-godfather-ii-demo/">EA has no plans to release a Godfather II demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 10:15:00 EST. <div align="left">Everyone and their grand-pappy is on Facebook these days and <em>The Godfather</em> is no exception. To build excitement for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-godfather-2"><em>The Godfather II</em></a> and reach that "social networking" crowd, EA has released a not too violent Facebook game called <em><a href="http://apps.facebook.com/godfather-crimerings/">Crime Ring</a></em>.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />The <em>Crime Ring </em>application can be accessed <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/godfather-crimerings/">here</a> (Facebook account required) and is a relatively involved game where the goal is to create a family, build up your bank roll, become an evil mobster, play dress up, and promote EA's upcoming <em>Godfather </em>sequel. We're sure those of you who are interested will be able to figure it out, but we're more interested in learning which other famous mobsters are on Facebook. Al Capone, perhaps?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/14/the-godfather-is-all-about-networking-on-facebook/">The Godfather is all about networking on Facebook</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">There's a <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/44302.html">new trailer</a> for EA's upcoming <em>GTAIV </em>lookalike <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-godfather-2"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Godfather II</span></a> and it puts a spotlight on the crew. The Godfather's crew. You know, folks like The Safecracker, The Medic, The Engineer, The Bruiser, The Demolitionist and The Arsonist. Sounds to be a bit like a <span style="font-style: italic;">Team Fortress</span> game. Confirmed! <span style="font-style: italic;">The Godfather II</span> = <span style="font-style: italic;">GTAIV </span>+ <span style="font-style: italic;">TF2 </span>+ Not As Awesome. <div align="left">EA, going against the game releasing grain, will not be delaying <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/942/942828p1.html"><em>Godfather II</em>'s release date</a> as is usually the norm when publishers shift around their release schedules. Instead, they'll be bumping <em>Godfather II</em>'s release date ahead (an expedite?) to late February. The 24th in North America and the 27th in Europe, to be exact. That means that a game that we really <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-godfather-2">haven't seen</a> or heard much of will be releasing in a little over a month's time. Interesting decision EA, now how about spending that marketing budget?</div>

<div align="center"><em><small>click to enlarge</small></em></div>
Back when we got <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/first-look-at-eas-the-godfather-ii/">our first look</a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/godfather-2"><em>The Godfather II</em></a>'s strategy-infused single player campaign, we wondered how its developers at EA Redwood Shores would translate that experience into the realm of multiplayer. As it turns out, there's strategy involved in the game's 16-player online matches - just of a different (and more familiar) sort.<br /><br />EARS (yeah, it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/30/dead-space-team-to-get-a-new-name-make-more-games/">doesn't like that acronym either</a>) began development of the game's online component knowing that it wanted it to be influenced by single player, and vice-versa. So, for starters, you can't play multiplayer until you've recruited at least one soldier in single player. That character can then be used online, leveled up, and will retain his "upgrades" in the single-player game. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer/">The Godfather II multiplayer</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer/#1234647"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/12/mp_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer/#1234646"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/12/mp_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer/#1234645"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/12/mp_08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer/#1234644"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/12/mp_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer/#1234643"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/12/mp_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/joystiq-hands-on-the-godfather-ii-multiplayer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq hands-on: The Godfather II multiplayer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/joystiq-hands-on-the-godfather-ii-multiplayer/">Joystiq hands-on: The Godfather II multiplayer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 12:30:00 EST. From making rival gangsters offers they can't refuse, to using your voice to command soldiers not to refuse orders, these fresh-off-the-editing-computer videos from EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-godfather-2"><em>The Godfather II</em></a> and Ubisoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tom-clancys-endwar"><em>Tom Clancy's EndWar</em></a> are presented for your viewing pleasure (and "Should I pre-order either of them?" evidence pool). The <em>EndWar</em> trailer is the same one being trotted out at the Leipzig Games Convention 2008; the first look at EA's gangster sequel was shown to the press last week at the publisher's annual Studio Showcase. But you don't have to travel to Germany (or even the Bay Area) to watch 'em - just click through after the break.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38399.html">Source</a> - Godfather II at GameTrailers<br /><a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38492.html">Source</a> - Tom Clancy's EndWar at GameTrailers<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/watch-new-godfather-ii-tom-clancys-endwar-trailers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Watch new Godfather II, Tom Clancy's EndWar trailers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/watch-new-godfather-ii-tom-clancys-endwar-trailers/">Watch new Godfather II, Tom Clancy's EndWar trailers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Aug 2008 22:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><em><small>click to Don-size</small></em></div>
</div>
Casting players as a soldier of the Corleone Family, the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-godfather"><em>The Godfather</em></a> from EA took the open-world formula of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gta"><em>GTA</em></a> and introduced some unique fist fighting and intimidation mechanics fitting of its namesake. It <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/21/metareview-the-godfather-xbox/">reviewed well enough</a>, but its creator decided that, for the sequel, it would take a different approach: the Don's approach.<br /><br />As we've previously reported, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-godfather-2"><em>The Godfather II</em></a> is indeed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/07/godfather-2-detailed-less-gta-more-rpg-rts-board-game/">a blend of action and strategy gameplay</a>. Taking some liberties with the plot of the famous film, Michael Corleone has appointed the player's character as a fill-in Don. It's in this role that they plot against other families - each with their own ambitions - in an effort to rule all of the rackets in Havana, Miami, and New York City. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/">The Godfather II</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443163"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/10.15.118.37-image45-3202009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443162"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/10.15.118.37-image40-3202009-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443161"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x329_y38_z-185_000015-3202009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443160"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x344_y38_z-182_000014-3202009-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii/#1443159"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x326_y38_z-168_000018-3202009-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/first-look-at-eas-the-godfather-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First look at EA's The Godfather II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/first-look-at-eas-the-godfather-ii/">First look at EA's The Godfather II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Aug 2008 09:00:00 EST. EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/29/ea-we-shouldve-put-more-eggs-into-the-wii-basket/">John Riccitiello</a> doesn't like to keep things bottled up. Whether it's displeasure at how his gardener trimmed the bushes in his back yard or the change to the tried-and-true meatloaf recipe his wife enacted last night, if John's got something on his mind, odds are it's coming out of his mouth. And, for that, <em>we love him</em>.<br /><br />Take, for example, a recent investor call he took part in. The EA CEO spilled the beans that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/ea-boss-confirms-sequel-to-the-godfather/"><em>The Godfather 2</em></a> would be releasing shortly after another big EA title, <em>Left 4 Dead</em>. This would mean the game is slated for late this year to early next year for release. We're wondering if that's even possible, to tell the truth.<br /><br />We haven't really seen or heard much on the game, so we kind of have a hard time believing that it could release so soon. Also, with the Wii version of the game releasing later than other versions of the first title, we're wondering if EA will plan on doing that again with the sequel.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/ea-ceo-late-08-early-09-godfather-2-release/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/ea-godfather-2-in-late-2008-or-early-2009/">EA: Godfather 2 in late 2008 or early 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Aug 2008 19:29:00 EST. Sure, the game takes some liberties and it isn't anywhere near the quality of the movies it's based on, but there's a certain bit of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/05/new-godfather-trailer-shows-us-how-to-deal-with-cops/">evil fun</a> that can be found in beating up a shop owner because they refuse to pay protection money. Now, EA is talking about a sequel.<br /><br />EA boss John Riccitiello talked up the sequel at a William Blair &amp; Company's investor meeting Tuesday, stating that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ea">EA</a>'s Redwood Shores studio has been working on it. "It's a game that I think we'll be talking a lot about this fall," said Riccitiello. "You can play this game both at the street level, much like a <em>GTA</em>-style game, but you can also play it top-down, almost like you're in an RTS, controlling the strategy of the boroughs so you can see what's going on..." EA's Hunter Smith (he worked on their previous two <em>James Bond</em> games) will serve as the game's producer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/ea-boss-confirms-sequel-to-the-godfather/">EA boss confirms sequel to The Godfather</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 17:00:00 EST.
