<br />
CD Projekt RED has released <a href="http://redkit.cdprojektred.com/">REDkit</a>, an official set of tools that allows amateur modders to make <i>The Witcher 2</i> even witchier than ever before.<br />
<br />
REDkit, originally launched as a private beta <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/17/the-witcher-2-redkit-modding-tools-go-into-beta/">back in August</a>, is a robust toolkit that lets users create new characters and quests within <i>The Witcher 2</i>. If you want to further tweak your mod's fantasy setting, REDkit also allows modders to edit terrain and plant virtual forests using the SpeedTree system. User-created content can be shared with fellow Witcher series enthusiasts at <a href="http://redkit.cdprojektred.com/index.php?c=files">CD Projkt RED's website</a>.<br />
<br />
Would-be modders might want to check out <a href="http://wiki.cdprojektred.com/redkit/">REDkit's wiki</a> before delving too deeply into the REDkit's world of character creation and tree-planting.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/13/the-witcher-2-official-mod-tools-released/">The Witcher 2 official mod tools released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 May 2013 18:30:00 EST. Remember when you made that offer of a free PC or Mac copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2"><em>The Witcher 2</em></a> with an OnLive purchase of the game? What, that's now? Silly us!<br /><br />The cloud gaming platform told us that, starting today, a $19.99 purchase of <em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition </em>grabs you a PC or Mac copy via GOG.com. CD Projekt's action RPG is also one of the over 200 games in OnLive's PlayPack, which you can subscribe access to for $9.99 a month.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/buy-witcher-2-enhanced-edition-on-onlive-get-free-pc-mac-copy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Buy 'Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition' on OnLive, get free GOG copy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/buy-witcher-2-enhanced-edition-on-onlive-get-free-pc-mac-copy/">Buy 'Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition' on OnLive, get free GOG copy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 13:00:00 EST. The figure represents a combined total for <em>The Witcher</em> and <em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings</em>, and with both games <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/05/pc-witcher-games-on-sale-xbox-game-permanently-discounted/">on sale</a> this week, it could be on the rise quicker than you can say Gwynbleidd.<br /><br />A few months after <em>The Wither 2</em> arrived on Xbox 360, CD Projekt <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/11/witcher-franchise-tops-4-million-units-sold/">announced</a> the franchise was up to 4 million copies sold. With a further million sold in the six or so months since, it's not surprising to hear CD Projekt SA CEO Adam Kiciński say the console port "largely contributed" to the franchise's new milestone.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/06/witcher-franchise-up-to-5-million-sold/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Witcher franchise up to 5 million sold</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/06/witcher-franchise-up-to-5-million-sold/">Witcher franchise up to 5 million sold</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 09:00:00 EST. On GOG, <em>The Witcher: Director's Cut</em> is $5, and <em>The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition</em> is $15 (both with extras) through Friday at 10:59am GMT.<br /><br />On Steam, <em>The Witcher </em>is <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/20900/">$5</a>, and <em>The Witcher 2</em> is <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/20920/">$10</a>, as is its Prima Guide. In addition, CDP has permanently dropped the MSRP of the Xbox version of <em>The Witcher 2 </em>to $29.99/&euro;29.99/&pound;19.99. Like, the same way that no one has ever seen Bruce Wayne and the Batman together in the same place? It's just <em>weird</em>, is all; almost as if our money was somehow being removed <em>by</em> the sale, or something.<br /><br />Some mysteries will never be solved, we suppose. Today's Steam Holiday Sale offerings include 50 to 75 percent off of <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sale/wintersale2012_elderscrollsfranchise"><em>Skyrim</em>, its DLC and its predecessors</a>, 75 percent off <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sale/wintersale2012_gtafranchise">various Grand Theft Auto games</a>, <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sub/15360/"><em>BioShock</em> and <em>BioShock 2</em></a> for a collective $10, 75 percent off <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sale/wintersale2012_witcherfranchise">both Witcher games</a>, <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sub/18252/"><em>Galactic Civilizations I</em> and <em>II</em></a> for $6.24 and <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/24240/"><em>Payday: The Heist</em></a> for $5.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/steam-holiday-sale-day-10-skyrim-bioshock-grand-theft-auto-f/">Steam Holiday Sale, day 10: Skyrim, BioShock, Grand Theft Auto franchise sales and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 29 Dec 2012 15:00:00 EST. With rotating daily deals of up to 75% off and discounts up to 50% off on everything in GOG's catalogue, the platform is truly making a case for the season of giving to one's self.<br /><br />The sale lasts until January 3. Today's daily deals include <em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings</em> for $12 and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-longest-journey"><em>The Longest Journey</em></a> for $5, among other quality offerings. As for general standouts during the promotion, we'd have to say <em>Syndicate</em> for $3 is a nice deal, and so is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/legend-of-grimrock-review/"><em>Legend of Grimrock</em></a> for $3.74. Mac gamers aren't left out in the full-priced cold either, with deals on <em>SimCity 2000</em> for $3, <em>Fallout</em> for $5 and <em>Descent</em> and <em>Descent 2</em> for $5 to consider.<br /><br />For the full list of 475 games on sale during GOG's promotion, follow the source link below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/14/gogs-holiday-sale-discounts-475-games-until-jan-3/">GOG's holiday sale discounts 475 games until Jan. 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Dec 2012 17:00:00 EST. Mac users can expect "a bunch of thrilling announcements" and details about <em>The Witcher 2 </em>on OSX. Last we heard, <em>The Witcher 2</em> was scheduled to hit Mac <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/30/the-witcher-2-conjures-1-7-million-in-sales-coming-to-mac-and-j/">this fall</a>.<br /><br />Modding news may involve the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/17/the-witcher-2-redkit-modding-tools-go-into-beta/">REDkit mod tools</a> program, which is accepting beta applications through September 30.<br /><br />The Special Event also includes news from GOG.com: GOG will officially announce plans to bring its lineup of classic PC games to "a new operating system," which we can only assume is Gentoo. OK, fine - it's probably OSX.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/25/new-name-for-cd-projekt-reds-cyberpunk-witcher-news-to-strea/">New name for CD Projekt RED's 'Cyberpunk,' Witcher news to stream live Oct. 18</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 14:30:00 EST. During <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gdc-europe-2012">GDC Europe 2012</a>, CD Projekt Red gameplay producer Marek Ziemak and lead gameplay designer Maciej Szczesnik detailed the process that the developer uses to evaluate any features that could make their way into a project.<br /><br />CD Projekt Red uses a set of internal documents that the studio's employees all have access to. Using these documents, developers can describe their features and the rest of the staff evaluates them. In some cases, staffers even apply numerical values to a proposed feature, with the final "score" affecting the likelihood that a feature will make it into the game. The overarching idea is to fully analyze the risk of a feature and the consequences of implementing it.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cd-projekt-red-gds-europe-2012-talk/">CD Projekt Red GDS Europe 2012 talk</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cd-projekt-red-gds-europe-2012-talk/#5225582"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/img0814-1345575722_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cd-projekt-red-gds-europe-2012-talk/#5225583"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/img0815-1345575724_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cd-projekt-red-gds-europe-2012-talk/#5225584"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/img0817-1345575725_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cd-projekt-red-gds-europe-2012-talk/#5225585"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/img0819-1345575726_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cd-projekt-red-gds-europe-2012-talk/#5225586"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/img0820-1345575728_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/21/cd-projekt-red-on-killing-your-favorite-features/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CD Projekt Red on killing your favorite features</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/21/cd-projekt-red-on-killing-your-favorite-features/">CD Projekt Red on killing your favorite features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 20:00:00 EST. And to help you do that - and to help build a robust modding tool - CD Projekt Red has opened up a beta for the toolkit.<br /><br />Signups for the beta are being accepted here through September 30. The form has spaces for "Your website" and "Your mod samples," so you're probably more likely to make it to the top of the list if you have experience making your own levels or otherwise messing with your games.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/17/the-witcher-2-redkit-modding-tools-go-into-beta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Witcher 2 REDkit modding tools go into beta</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/17/the-witcher-2-redkit-modding-tools-go-into-beta/">The Witcher 2 REDkit modding tools go into beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 14:00:00 EST. That means a combined 4 million units of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/the-witcher"><em>The Witcher</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2"><em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings</em></a> have been sold across PC, Mac and Xbox 360.<br /><br /><em>The Witcher 2</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/21/witcher-franchise-sold-1-5-million-copies-in-2011/">moved 1.1 million copies in 2011</a>, while the original moved 400,000. As of May 2012, <em>The Witcher 2</em> had sold a total of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/30/the-witcher-2-conjures-1-7-million-in-sales-coming-to-mac-and-j/">1.7 million copies</a>.<br /><br /><em>The Witcher 2</em> will <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/30/the-witcher-2-conjures-1-7-million-in-sales-coming-to-mac-and-j/">expand its reach</a> later this year with the launch of the Japanese Xbox 360 version and a Mac port. Specifically, the game has moved 1.7 million copies across the PC and Xbox 360 platforms.<br /><br />The company hopes to sell a few more copies by bringing the Xbox version to Japan. To be published by Spike Chunsoft, the Xbox version of <em>The Witcher 2</em> will arrive in Japan on August 23. Finally, <em>The Witcher 2</em> will be available on Mac this fall. We're guessing you'll <em>probably</em> need a Mac with a dedicated graphics card to actually run it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/30/the-witcher-2-conjures-1-7-million-in-sales-coming-to-mac-and-j/">The Witcher 2 conjures 1.7 million in sales, coming to Mac and Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 May 2012 13:36:00 EST. "We're looking for people who would rather work on an entirely new and different IP," reads the listing, "a vast RPG for which we want to assemble the best possible staff. It represents an opportunity for you to create a grand new project from the ground up!"<br /><br />The listing also makes reference to the developer's existing "mature dark-fantasy world," distinguishing this new project as likely separate from The Witcher (at least in location), and as one for those who "can't stomach dwarves, elves or sorceresses who put their ample charms on display in Playboy magazine."<br /><br />If you're an artist, programmer or designer looking for work in Poland, give it a shot! There's never any harm in trying. Well, unless you're trying to teach synchronized swimming to an uncooperative bear - there's probably a lot of harm in that.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/12/cd-projekt-red-hiring-for-rpg-in-a-brand-new-setting/">CD Projekt Red hiring for RPG in a 'brand new setting'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 May 2012 15:00:00 EST. That's why we invented <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/deja-review">Deja Review</a>: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games.</small></font><hr /><div style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/deja-review-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings-enhanced-edition/"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image3_530x330.jpg" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; width: 530px; height: 330px; " /></a></div><div style="text-align: left; "> <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2"><em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings</em></a> has always been a console game in disguise. The PC version remains superior, capable of more clarity and sophisticated effects, but plug in a controller and the Riveting Polish Game transforms into something you'd rather play ensconced in a couch. The "Enhanced Edition" feels authentic and comfortable on the Xbox 360.<br /> <br /> That isn't to say it's been streamlined to a fault. <em>The Witcher 2</em> is a gorgeous, thoughtful and brassy adventure with a surprising number of sharp edges. The original game had a deadly gauntlet for a tutorial, a misstep which got it lambasted while a dragon roasted players again and again. It was frustrating, yes, but it worked as a charming wake-up call of sorts, and as a crucial component of the game's mature personality. To succeed, you must think and do as Geralt of Rivia does, and that's precisely what you want in a role-playing game.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/">The Witcher 2 Xbox 360 (1/26/2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776443"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776444"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776445"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776446"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-1-26-2012/#4776447"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/witcherjan26image5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/deja-review-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings-enhanced-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deja Review: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition (Xbox 360)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/deja-review-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings-enhanced-edition/">Deja Review: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition (Xbox 360)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 09:45:00 EST. The console launch <em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Enhanced Edition</em> took the crown last week, with <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=1311&amp;s=1111">Chart-Track</a> noting 98 percent of sales for the game were cast toward the console version.<br /><br />The original PC version of <em>The Witcher 2</em> reached the fifth spot on the UK charts when it premiered in May 2011, but that number didn't represent the full picture, since the chart doesn't count digitally distributed products.<br /><br /><em>Witcher 2</em> was the only new title to break the top 40, with the usual suspects in the top ten shifting around Geralt. <em>FIFA Street </em>and <em>FIFA 12</em> both hold the silver and bronze, respectively. Kick on past the break for the UK top ten.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/witcher-2-casts-enhanced-edition-success-spell-on-uk-charts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Witcher 2 enhances its spot on UK charts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/witcher-2-casts-enhanced-edition-success-spell-on-uk-charts/">Witcher 2 enhances its spot on UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 08:30:00 EST. The horrifically <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/the-witcher-2-review/#review">painful-to-play opening act</a> of the game, which was a stumbling block for so many, has been tweaked for accessibility and to get players involved in one of the best RPGs in recent memory. Here's the launch trailer before next week's Xbox 360 debut.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/14/witcher-2-launches-new-trailer-before-xbox-debut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Witcher 2 launches new trailer before Xbox debut</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/14/witcher-2-launches-new-trailer-before-xbox-debut/">Witcher 2 launches new trailer before Xbox debut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 14 Apr 2012 21:00:00 EST. His presentation was hinged on how the Polish publisher sold over a million copies of the game on a modest budget.<br /><br />"We release the game. It's cracked in two hours, it was no time for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-witcher-2/">Witcher 2</a></em>. What really surprised me is that the pirates didn't use the GOG version, which was not protected. They took the SecuROM retail version, cracked it and said 'we cracked it' -- meanwhile there's a non-secure version with a simultaneous release. The breakdown is 1.1 million copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2">The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings</a> for the year, following its May launch, and another 400,000 sales of the original game, which launched in 2007.<br /><br />"I have to admit, though, that the sales results for The Witcher, five years on from the game's premiere, are remarkable. If anything, they prove that the content we put into our games ages well," said Adam Badowski, head of the CD Projekt RED studio.<br /><br />A surprising statistic about the sequel, given how entrenched we think digital distribution is in PC gaming, is that digital distribution only accounted for 24 percent of the sequel's sales. Digital distribution channels had 270,000 sales of <em>The Witcher 2</em>, with 40,000 of those through the DRM-free GOG.com.<br /><br />The Witcher will also be introduced to new audiences this year when <em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition</em> makes its way to Xbox 360 on April 17.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/21/witcher-franchise-sold-1-5-million-copies-in-2011/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Witcher franchise sold 1.5 million copies in 2011</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/21/witcher-franchise-sold-1-5-million-copies-in-2011/">Witcher franchise sold 1.5 million copies in 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 12:30:00 EST. A horse-drawn carriage is pretty much the slowest method of transport ever, but come April 17 his long voyage to the Xbox 360 will have concluded. Warner Bros. has finally announced the official launch date for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/the-witcher-2-review/#review">the highly lauded</a> CD Projekt Red sequel today, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2"><em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings</em></a>.<br /><br />Originally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/the-witcher-2-casting-spells-on-xbox-360/">announced</a> last summer, the title was originally planned to launch on Xbox 360 in 2011, but had to be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/01/the-witcher-2-xbox-360-delayed-until-q1-2012/">pushed back</a> to early 2012 before <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/warner-bros-casting-witcher-2-for-xbox-360-in-na/">Warner Bros. signed on</a> to publish. After some strong words and even <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/15/cd-projekt-demands-witcher-2-pirates-pay-up-100-sure-its-ta/">stronger legal actions</a>, it looks like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2"><em>Witcher 2</em></a> developer CD Projekt RED is curtailing its actions against pirates over stolen copies of its last release. CDP co-founder Marcin Iwinski penned an "open letter to the gaming community" wherein he states that, "immediately" his company will "cease identifying and contacting pirates."<br />
<br />
Make no mistake, Iwinski isn't flipping his stance on pirates or the concept of piracy. "It hurts us, the developers. It hurts the industry as a whole," he writes. He is, however, flipping his company's approach to dealing with piracy, rolling back past legal options and taking "your opinions to heart" instead. Iwinski also points out that unless folks pay for games, companies like his "won't be able to produce new excellent titles for you," which we fully stand behind.<br />
<br />
So, in conclusion: Piracy? <em>Bad</em>. Legal actions against pirates? <em>Also bad</em>. Questions?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/12/witcher-2-dev-cd-project-red-ceases-legal-action-against-pirates/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Witcher 2 dev CD Project RED ceases legal action against pirates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/12/witcher-2-dev-cd-project-red-ceases-legal-action-against-pirates/">Witcher 2 dev CD Project RED ceases legal action against pirates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 12:30:00 EST. Pace yourself! <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/19/steams-holiday-sale-discounts-everything-ever-gives-gifts-gam/">Steam's Holiday Sale</a> is only in day two, and you can already get <em>Costume Quest</em> for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/115100/">$3.74</a> (or with <em>Psychonauts</em> for just $2 more!), <em>Lego Batman</em> for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/21000/">$5</a>, <em>The Witcher 2</em> for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sale/Witcher/">$24</a>, <em>The Witcher 1</em> for $2.49, and <em>Modern Warfare 2</em> for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/10180/">$15</a>.<br />
<br />
You're definitely going to be broke after this year's sale but, on the upside, you'll be able to play a <em>lot</em> of games until your electricity is shut off and you're evicted.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/20/witcher-2-double-fine-games-more-in-steam-holiday-sale-today/">Witcher 2, Double Fine games, more in Steam Holiday Sale today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 18:15:00 EST. 	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/15/cd-projekt-demands-witcher-2-pirates-pay-up-100-sure-its-ta/"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/311095_530x330.jpg" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; width: 530px; height: 330px; " /></a></div>
Developer CD Projekt RED previously estimated that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2/">The Witcher 2</a></em> had been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/30/4-5-million-pirated-copies-of-witcher-2-out-there-according-to/">pirated 4.5 million times</a>, and now it's looking for thousands of those offenders to pay up. <a href="http://torrentfreak.com/drm-free-witcher-2-cashes-in-on-bittorrent-pirates-111207/">TorrentFreak</a> reports the company has sent legal notices to BitTorrent users in Germany seeking &euro;912 ($1180) to cover their debt to the company.<br />
<br />
"As you know, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/10/witcher-2-digital-sales-pass-a-quarter-million/">we aren't huge fans of any sort of DRM</a> here at CD Projekt RED. DRM itself is a pain for legal gamers - the same group of honest people who decided that our game was worth its price, and went and bought it," CD Projekt RED told Joystiq in a statement. "We don't want to make their lives more difficult by introducing annoying copy protection systems."<br />
<br />
"However, that shouldn't be confused with us giving a green light to piracy. We will never approve of it, since it doesn't only affect us but has a negative impact on the whole game industry. We've <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/12/15/the-witcher-2-devs-claim-100-accuracy-in-identifying-pirates-demand-money-from-thousands/">seen some of the concern online</a> about our efforts to thwart piracy, and we can assure you that we only take legal actions against users who we are 100 percent sure have downloaded our game illegally."<br />
<br />
CD Projekt wouldn't explain how it's sure that it's targeting the pirates properly, but it's using a method, according to <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/12/15/the-witcher-2-devs-claim-100-accuracy-in-identifying-pirates-demand-money-from-thousands/">PC Gamer</a>, developed by an external company.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/15/cd-projekt-demands-witcher-2-pirates-pay-up-100-sure-its-ta/">CD Projekt demands Witcher 2 pirates pay up, '100% sure' it's targeting properly</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 16:00:00 EST. If you pick up an Xbox 360 copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2"><em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings</em></a> in Western Europe, Central or South America, or the Asia-Pacific region next year, it'll be thanks to Namco Bandai. A court in Lyon, France has ruled that it may distribute the game in those territories, following a dispute with CD Projekt parent company Optimus SA, which had offered the game to THQ despite prior commitments.<br />

Namco Bandai is entitled to a new distribution contract, and can extract a punitive fee of 15,000 euros per day if Optimus doesn't sign on the dotted line within 15 days of the ruling. When the dispute began, Optimus president Adam Kicinski <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/07/namco-bandai-files-suit-over-witcher-2s-european-publishing/">expected a settlement</a> or a legal victory, after which, he said, "the loser will pay for our lawyers."<br />
<br />
A second loser here is THQ, which sees its preliminary agreement crushed as collateral damage beneath the gavel. According to <a href="http://www.parkiet.com/artykul/26,1126537-CD-Projekt-RED--Data-premiery--Wiedzmina-2--na-Xbox360-nie-jest-zagrozona.html">Parkiet.com</a>, CD Projekt RED board member Marcin Iwinski said THQ had suffered no costs, and that the companies may yet "part in harmony."<br />
<br />
The court did not venture an opinion on Namco Bandai's suggestion that CD Projekt had violated their agreement by spontaneously <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/26/the-witcher-2-patch-delayed-due-to-server-infrastructure-issue/">disabling DRM</a> from PC versions of<em> The Witcher 2</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/08/namco-bandai-wins-in-witcher-2-distribution-dispute/">Namco Bandai wins in Witcher 2 distribution dispute</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Dec 2011 21:55:00 EST. GOG's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/05/gog-cutting-the-prices-of-most-games-in-half-giving-witcher-wit/">48-hour sale</a> that gives you <em>The Witcher: Enhanced Edition</em> and <em>The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings</em> for $24 (down from $40) is on <em>right now</em>. The company states this is the "best price" it'll have on the <em>Witcher</em> franchise during its holiday sales, and it's not like it would lie about something like that (well, there was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/19/digital-distribution-retailer-good-old-games-shuts-down/">that one time</a>).<br />
<br />
<em>The Witcher 2</em>, which we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/the-witcher-2-review/#review">loved at launch</a>, has since received one of the most significant post-release updates we've ever seen, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/27/wall-of-text-describes-witcher-2s-major-update-in-full/">effectively addressing most reasonable criticism</a>. For those without the PC to handle all the visual awe <em>The Witcher 2</em> has to offer, the game should cast its spell on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/warner-bros-casting-witcher-2-for-xbox-360-in-na/">Xbox 360 in early 2012</a>.<br />

Classic game distributor (and CD Projekt portal) GOG isn't one to be left out of the holiday discount phenomenon. The site <a href="http://www.gog.com/en/news/gog_com_s_holiday_celebrations_are_almost_here">revealed</a> its sales plans for the rest of the month, including a free copy of <em>The Witcher</em> with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2"><em>Witcher 2</em></a> downloads, and a 50 percent discount on "virtually" its whole catalog.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/05/gog-cutting-the-prices-of-most-games-in-half-giving-witcher-wit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GOG cutting the prices of most games in half, giving Witcher with Witcher 2 purchase</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/05/gog-cutting-the-prices-of-most-games-in-half-giving-witcher-wit/">GOG cutting the prices of most games in half, giving Witcher with Witcher 2 purchase</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 17:00:00 EST.
