Sony Europe has finally seen the light and will execute Three Speech, replacing it with the EU PlayStation blog. Three Speech is Sony Europe's "semi-official" blog, written by -- we believe -- freelancing European game journos and an outside PR company who don't byline their articles. For years, the site has drunkenly walked a line between being a Sony Europe mouthpiece and something different.

Thankfully, as of April 17, it appears Three Speech will finally take the mouthpiece mantel with pride and become the EU PlayStation blog. All we can do is hope the EU blog takes its cues from the US PlayStation Blog, a professionally-run site that provides good content and doesn't mince words about what it is.
Thank the gawds: Three Speech is dead, replaced by EU PlayStation Blog originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 13:30:00 EST.
The semi-official blog ThreeSpeech has announced European/UK release dates for their upcoming titles. Most of you are probably most interested in the Resistance 2 release date, which has been floating around as rumor but never confirmed. Buzz! Quiz TV Special Edition was suppose to come out next month, so its release date of tomorrow is a little earlier than expected. Rest of the release dates are below:

Sony's President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, sat down with ThreeSpeech in an interview to discuss his plans for the PlayStation name. He began by giving some background information about himself and his transition into Phil Harrison's former position, admitting that his predecessor's departure was "unexpected" but he will "continue that drive."

The main question on everyone's mind was exclusives, mainly whether Sony will begin paying for them. Yoshida stated that he understands due to the rising cost of development, third-party publishers must recuperate costs, hence the need to go multi-platform. He tells us Sony's strategy is "invest(ing) in our first-party studios; (and) in terms of exclusive titles, our role becomes more important." LittleBigPlanet is the exclusive the President is most looking forward to and further indicated Home should be ready by Christmas. He also addresses canceled games; citing "business situations and priorities" as the reasons why Eight Days and The Getaway, in their pre-production phase, landed on the cutting room floor.

Yoshida also confirmed his move from the US back to Japan this year, in order to participate more in the "overall direction-setting of our company and our future platforms" and "to participate in the top management group of SCEI and really achieve the vision that Kaz has in terms of how this company should work going forward." Of course, no Sony executive can go on interview without agreeing with the prediction that the PS3 will remain "a really relevant system for another ten years." For more, read the in-depth interview over at ThreeSpeech.

Shuhei Yoshida on his relocation, exclusives and future of PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 11:00:00 EST. In an official statement issued to ThreeSpeech, SCEE explains the problem with firmware 2.40. It seems that there was a problem which "prevented a limited number of PS3s from activating properly after updating to version 2.40, when certain system administrative data were contained on the HDD." This has now been fixed with 2.41, though those who suffer from the problem (which prevents the PS3 from loading up the XMB) will not be able to access the new firmware update.

Instead, those who had problems with 2.40 will need to contact Customer Services and will receive a replacement PS3. 2.41 will prevent this problem happening to anyone else. The statement also reiterates that those who installed 2.40 successfully will not suffer from any issues. Good news all round, really. We're happy those people who were too slow to grab 2.40 will now be able to start earning trophies and enjoying in-game XMB with the rest of us.
2.40 bricking caused by 'system administrative data' on hard disk originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 10:00:00 EST. ThreeSpeech has the scoop on when we can expect Siren: Blood Curse to hit the European PSN Store, as well as how much we will be spending on this episodic horror. We're not sure what Sony's understanding of "episodic" is, but we were expecting something a little bit different to what's been described. Siren will be split into four chapters, each containing three episodes of the game, but the strange part is that all four chapters will be made available on the same day -- July 24th.

I guess we can't complain now that we know we won't have to wait in between episodes, but we can't help but wonder why they've bothered with splitting the game up at all. Why not just release it all as one? When the game releases you'll be able to pick up each chapter for £4.99 (no sign of a price in Euros, sorry!), with all four chapters bundled together for £19.99. Pro tip: Buy them all separately and you'll save 3p. That's three penny sweets!
Siren: Blood Curse priced and dated for Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Jul 2008 12:00:00 EST. As previously rumored Sony will be releasing a second volume of casual sing-em-up SingStar for the PS3. While SingStar Vol. 2 will be little more than a 30-song expansion (much like the many, many PS2 SingStars available) there will be an additional gameplay mode available. There's no indication as to whether the songs on the disc are already available on the SingStore or, if not, whether they'll be made available soon after release.

We're wondering exactly why Sony are releasing a second volume. Wasn't the SingStore meant to prevent this sort of thing? Considering the market it's designed for (casual gamers) we can sort of understand if the extra volumes are released for people who have no intention of signing up to the PlayStation Network. But more gameplay modes? We hope to see this new "Harmony mode" released as a free download for SingStar Vol 1 users who do use the SingStore. If not, expect users of the original game to be quite angry. The release of Volume 2 brings with it more questions than answers, such as a price or release date. Also, how will this affect the still-pending US release? Stay tuned.
SingStar Vol. 2 announcement brings more questions than answers originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Apr 2008 19:30:00 EST.
We know that sometimes reading words is hard work. Sometimes you need someone to talk at you. To show you. In walks the above Buzz video. If you've had trouble making it through one of our Buzz! Quiz TV posts (including our recent hands on impressions) in the past then let the game's host, Buzz himself, show you exactly what's what. All the special features that promise to make the PS3 version of the Buzz! franchise so great.

Speaking of which, some of those downloadable quizes look great fun -- particularly the video games and sci-fi movie based ones. Is it wrong that we're already putting money aside for this game before it's even released? Oh, and before you ask: Summer. Apparently.

Behold, Buzz! ThreeSpeech, Sony's "semi-official" PlayStation 3 weblog has received a new lick of paint recently, you'll be happy to hear. The site looks altogether much spiffier, with a wider page format and a countdown timer. A countdown to what, though? You don't really have to be a rocket scientist to work out that when that timer reaches zero we'll be treated to some sort of Motorstorm 2 coverage.

We were promised a trailer by French site JeuxVideo but it never materialized. Even if we hadn't been given the blatant clue "a new breed of warrior will be born," we would've expected to see the video appear whenever the timer runs out. You never know, though. We've been wrong before ...
ThreeSpeech receives redesign including mysterious timer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 13:00:00 EST. It's about time. Finally, the first worthwhile Singstar Singstore update is on its way. On March 7th the Singstore will be updated with 67 new songs, almost doubling the amount of content that's available today. It's true that a lot of songs included in this update are from previous Singstar iterations on the PS2, but if these updates (which should be occurring twice monthly, now) keep looking similar to this, we'll be impressed.

The song list is really rather good, actually. We're quite looking forward to grabbing some ourselves. Particularly, some Bowie, The Darkness, Feeder and Lordi. To see the full list of songs due to be up on the Singstore on the 7th or March, check past the jump.
Continue reading 67 songs headed for the Singstore on March 7th

67 songs headed for the Singstore on March 7th originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 12:15:00 EST. The WipEout series has always had excellent soundtracks and WipEout HD promises to be no exception. Sony has today revealed the full music list for the game, along with a plethora of other details, most of which we've seen before. The full soundtrack for the game is as follows:

MoveYa! & Steve Lavers: Chemical

Stanton Warriors: Tokyo

DJ Fresh: X-Project (100% Pure mix)

Ed Rush, Optical & Matrix: Frontline

Noisia: Seven Stitches

MIST: Smart Systems

Mason: Exceeder - Special mix

Booka Shade: Steady Rush

Kraftwerk: Aero Dynamik

Nothing on that list take your fancy? That's okay, WipEout HD will feature full custom soundtrack support, just like its PSP cousin, Wipeout Pulse. That means you can speed along at 600kph whilst listening to something wholly inappropriate, if you so wish.
Check out WipEout HD's soundtrack - don't like it? Those lucky BBC Tech guys have got their hands on PlayTV and have produced a wee video showing off exactly what it can do. The video takes you through the interface of the software on the PS3, showing you how quick and streamlined the whole system is. They then go on to show off the remote play features. It all looks rather excellent to us and we can't wait to get our hands on the magic box itself.

ThreeSpeech has also been able to put rest to some niggles that some of you may have. They have confirmation from Sony that, should you set a program to record and have your PS3 on standby mode, it will turn itself on, record, then shut down. So those of you who are worried about wasting energy can rest easy in the knowledge that your PS3 will be on only as long as it needs to be.
See PlayTV in action originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 14:00:00 EST.
There's been a lot of talk about PlayTV, but until now that's all been words. ThreeSpeech have released the above video to show you, with actual pictures and everything, how exactly PlayTV will work. It's all very simple and straight forward.

PlayTV's release date is still shrouded in mystery, though Play.com did leak a possible date and price (March 28th for £99) this has now disappeared. No doubt there will be a significant marketing push when the system is nearing its release. We're just hoping to get our hands on it as soon as possible.

Still confused about PlayTV? While Sony America granted us exclusive access to information regarding firmware 2.00, it seems Sony Europe has had other plans. ThreeSpeech have revealed the feature set for the latest firmware via a SCEE press release. While this does spoil our surprise somewhat, please hang in there. When we're finally able to we will be releasing further in depth information regarding the firmware's features as well as some exclusive screen captures of it in action.

Until then, however, we'll retread the information on the press release so as to let you know what the firmware will contain. While we knew that Remote Start would be available from PSP firmware 3.72, the other features are as follows:

XMB themes

Information Board

XMB background colour changer

Music and Photo playlists

PlayStation Network XMB group

ThreeSpeech to the rescue! They have revealed all the confirmed release dates for the big Sony first party titles between now and the end of the year. Thankfully no games have been delayed into 2008, with most titles having gone gold already. Even Singstar gets a mention, along with confirmation that it will be out this year. Here's the full list:

The Eye of Judgment - October 26th

Lair - November 9th

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction - November 9th

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - December 7th

Singstar - December ??th

We know what gamers are like though - they always want more. If this list doesn't seem long enough to you then don't forget about all the third party titles that are out soon. With games like Guitar Hero III, Assassin's Creed, Haze and Call of Duty 4 along with the above list we're in for a busy Christmas.
ThreeSpeech sheds some light on European game release dates originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Oct 2007 12:00:00 EST. It's a two-way road, this video game business. Developers want you to buy their products so, in turn, if you request something from them then you had better be willing to front the cash. During a presentation and Q&A at last night's Warhawk tournament at 3Rooms, Tameem Antoniades (co-founder of Ninja Theory) was asked what his response was to the criticism that Heavenly Sword was too short. He replied that Ninja Theory are definitely interested in extending the experience via downloadable content - but only if it sells well.

The game has been getting good reviews pretty much across the board, with the most common criticism being that there simply isn't enough game to play. With the marketing push that is happening in Europe (we couldn't get through the paper this morning without being greeted by Nariko's face at least twice) we expect the game to sell well, but will it sell enough to persuade Ninja Theory to release extra content? We sincerely hope so. If you want to see it happen, then put down the money and buy the game.
Heavenly Sword downloadable content coming ... if it sells well originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Sep 2007 12:30:00 EST. At a ThreeSpeech organised Warhawk tournament (more on that later) at 3Rooms last night, a member of the Sony Europe PR team spoke to attendees regarding the lackluster EU PSN releases. The general gist was that Japan and America are receiving decent content regularly because each territory only has a single language. Europe, on the other hand, has 21 languages and each piece of content has to be localised for all of them. They recognise this is an issue and are working on a fix.

"Will you be able to see improvements in the next week, or the week after? Probably not, but do expect to see things get better in the near future." We look forward to it! Despite that, yesterday's EU PSN update has been heralded as the best yet. It's good to see Sony plans to push beyond that with future EU updates, rather than sitting back and relaxing now that some people have been appeased. We look forward to seeing what they come up with over the coming months.
Bad EU PSN updates? Or is it? We're in two minds as to whether the outcome of ThreeSpeech's PSN release date snooping is making us feel better or worse about the situation. They have managed to procure information regarding PSN releases for the upcoming month but we're sincerely hoping that the list is inexhaustive -- a fraction of the next month's PSN offerings. If not, then our hopes and dreams for the next 26 days are crushed. Crushed.

September 6th
Overall, a good month for Motorstorm fans. Lots of new downloadable content. The lack of any information regarding the 20th makes us think that there's more to come this month. While technically this can hardly be called a delay, Warhawk has been pushed back slightly in PAL territories. ThreeSpeech has declared that we can expect the game to grace the European PSN Store on August 30th, not the 28th as previously stated. The reason for this is simple. Sony have always updated the European PSN Store on Thursdays, not Tuesdays. Why break the habit of a <strike>lifetime</strike> few months and update it a couple of days early?

We can see the same thing happening with the release of Heavenly Sword. The UK release for which is September 14th, two days after the American release on the 12th. Retail games come out on Fridays here, that's just the way it goes. But wait a second, didn't we just get a PSN update on a Wednesday? We wonder if those extra two days the yanks get to play with give them the edge. With worldwide servers available on day one, we'll no doubt soon find out.
Warhawk pushed back in Europe, but don't start crying just yet originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 25 Aug 2007 04:00:00 EST. ThreeSpeech has the scoop on the European release dates for Warhawk. We have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the downloadable version will be available on the same day as in America. The 28th of August. The bad news is that the retail version won't be available until the 21st of September.

Yes, we know. The retail version is out on August 28th in America. That's a week today, for those of you with your head in the clouds. But where's ours? Over three weeks late, that's where. We're not particularly impressed. This isn't the first time Europe has been shafted like this. The bizarre thing is that the game will be available via download. Taunting those of us who are waiting for the cheap-as-free Bluetooth headset. Oh well, looks like another title we'll have to import.
Warhawk finally dated for Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 20:00:00 EST. It seems that ThreeSpeech feel the same way. They have contacted SCEE in order to figure out exactly when Euro is going to stop being treated like second class citizens.

Sadly, there has been no response as of yet. However this week plays host to the Leipzig Games Conference so you never know, Sony may release some content shown off at the show onto the Store. Like they did with E3. We're not holding our collective breath, though. Hopefully ThreeSpeech can get to the bottom of this situation soon.
ThreeSpeech feel the same as us about EU PSN; seeking answers originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 18 Aug 2007 14:30:00 EST. Despite finally getting some of Sony's European release dates recently, we were still kept in the dark regarding a price and release date for the download version of Warhawk. ThreeSpeech has today revealed both of these things. Apparently the PSN version of Warhawk is being worked on very hard in order to be released simultaneously in all regions. From the sounds of it, however, we wouldn't be surprised if it eventually came out a week or two later.

As for the price, Warhawk will be downloadable for £20. That's almost an exact translation from Dollars to Sterling. Has that ever happened before? The retail version will be £40, which is still a pretty good deal considering what's in the box. There's no word yet on the exact price in Euros. If the developers really do manage to get the game up on the PSN before the end of the month for all regions, then will you submit to impatience and download or wait a couple of weeks for the retail version? Tough call.
ThreeSpeech reveals Warhawk UK pricing originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 12:30:00 EST. Jealous.) are just a couple of people who did. Ben Furneaux, otherwise known as "The Man Who Said Those Things On That Podcast What People Didn't Like", has made a statement about what was said as an attempt to cool the fires of fanboydom that are licking at his feet.

The statement can be found on his personal blog. In it he stands by the comments he made and suggests that most of the ill-will that was received after the podcast came from confusion about what relation the speakers had to Sony's PR machine. The answer, seemingly, is none. Does that make what was said any more acceptable? That's up to you. Though fanboys have got away with saying far worse.

Be sure to read Ben's full statement. We assume the ThreeSpeech podcast will be continuing regardless of this entire debacle. Though if you're looking for an official straight-from-Sony podcast, then you'll probably need to wait for the PlayStation.Blog to start one. Which would not be a terrible idea.
ThreeSpeech podcast producer makes a statement originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 14:00:00 EST. Episode one of the ThreeSpeech podcast was released today. Set up by the guys who run the Red Rant podcast, this show promises debate on the latest ThreeSpeech headlines as well as all other things PS3 and PSP.

This week Ben Furneaux, David Darke, Pete Cullen and Tom 'BetaBoy' Eccles start out with a very entertaining show covering the last 30 days of ThreeSpeech. PlayStation 1 games on the PSN, Sony vs God and Warhawk beta impressions are just a few of the topics covered. It's clear that these guys have prior experience with podcasts, so make sure you give it a listen. The show will be coming out monthly and we are looking forward to more in the future.

Though if any more podcasts start popping up, we'll need to move further away from work just so that our commute is long enough to listen to them all. Seeing as how we work from home, that could prove very difficult.
ThreeSpeech podcast set to rival our own originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2007 04:00:00 EST. As a professional shill, Major Nelson is arguably the most well known in our business, but at least the man doesn't make any qualms about it. From the very moment that you step into his domain, it is made abundantly clear that Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb works for Microsoft.

The same, however, can not be said about Sony's "semi-official" blog, Three Speech. With dodgy language and a staff that refuses to attach themselves publicly to their editorial, the blog has been under scrutiny ever since it launched. Speaking of which, their podcast did just that today and aside from being an hour long train wreck, they had some choice words for their Microsoft counter-part, Major Nelson.

"Microsoft have got their significant other and I think the PlayStation offering, if you ask me, is far superior and a lot less slimy" said Ben Furneaux, who continued to refer to Nelson as the "unnamed blogger," despite writing for a blog that keeps their writers under wraps.

Continuing, Furneaux claims that Sony is more "straight to the point" with their PR, saying that "When they [Sony] delay something, they go, 'Oh, whoops. We've delayed it. Sorry.' and they're just honest about it and everybody picks on them for being blatantly honest about it." Despite living in Europe, Furneaux must have completely missed the whole PlayStation 3 launch debacle. You know, the one where even Phil Harrison didn't know what was going on, despite Three Speech having reported it themselves. Hey, he could have written it even, as is the joy of anonymity in writing on Three Speech.

After an hour of listening to a cast of Sony shills hype up a non-existant Final Fantasy VII remake, fumble over who made the Oddworld games (PROTIP: Oddworld did), pitch the PSP like used cars salesmen and ask themselves just what in the heck a Jumping Flash is, we came out even more bewildered over Three Speech.
Sony's Three Speech launches podcast, takes cheap shot at Major Nelson originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2007 03:01:00 EST.
The European PSN Store is a bit of a tragic tale, as we're sure you've noticed. According to Three Speech, however, that's about to change with two new games available to download before the end of the month. None of that Midway rehash rubbish, either. These are full, specially made for PSN, titles. Ok, I've kept you in suspense long enough, check out the list below.

Calling All Cars - 22nd of June (£4.99)

Super Stardust HD - 29th of June (£4.99)

Not too shabby, eh? While our US cousins have had Calling All Cars for a month now, Super Stardust HD should be a worldwide release. If you're as impatient for these games as we are then you might also like to know that this coming friday, the 15th, sees the release of the highly anticipated Motorstorm patch.

Looks like Sony are finally pulling their finger out with their PSN releases. Let's just hope it continues beyond the end of June.
Dates for upcoming European PSN releases and Motorstorm patch originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Jun 2007 10:30:00 EST. So far, over 130 comments have been posted and most responses are similar to what we've already heard over here. We want games! Comments suggest the PlayStation Store needs additional content and more frequent updates. While impressions of Motorstorm and Resistance are very positive, it seems everyone is still clamoring for a system-killer title. Lair, Heavenly Sword and Ninja Gaiden seem to be on many European PS3 wish lists, as well as the Sony online community Home.

Although currently, North American PS3 owners are receiving almost weekly updates to the PlayStation Store, it wasn't until late February that the updates started to pick up. So perhaps in a few weeks, three months after the European launch to be exact, content will start to arrive at a more steady and constant pace. And as for that one game, destined to sell PS3 systems along with it, be patient. As recent impressions from the Sony Gamer's Day imply, we may soon have more than just one system-killer title to choose from.
He says the difficulty of developing a title like Calling All Cars was the inability to rely "on old tricks" to alleviate the obviousness in areas with weaker game play. In regards to arcade titles, he says "if [the] core gaming isn't working, you have nowhere to hide." Near the tail-end of the interview, when asked if he has any more ideas planned for more downloadable games, Jaffe says his team is "in the design phase with two and three." Hmmm ... Calling All Cars 2 and 3? Or maybe a redesigned remake of the original Twisted Metal? Hey, we'd buy it.
David Jaffe interview, more downloadable games coming originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 May 2007 14:30:00 EST. Sony has officially announced the impending arrival of two more PlayStation Network titles, each of them boasting hyper-rainbow visuals that are likely to induce a mental state similar to that following ingestion of a hallucinogenic substance. Not that we have any experience with that sort of thing. We do have some familiarity with Snake though, which you may remember as that slithering self-extension exercise available on every electronic device known to man.

In Snakeball, you pilot a "bizarre hoversnake" across an "outlandishly dazzling disco floor," all the while devouring delicious spheres, blasting other players and whacking them with your bizarre hoversnake tail. The game supports online multiplayer, as well as the newly announced PlayStation Eye camera, ideal for plastering a face over your bizarre hoversnake pilot. Three Speech expects the game to arrive in July.
Super Stardust HD, to which the Sony blog gives a 15 June release date in Europe, is an arcade shooter built around the high concept of blasting defenseless asteroids to smithereens. A two-player co-op mode (it's unclear if this is local, online, or both), online rankings, 1080p resolution and a "seriously catchy soundtrack" are mentioned in the game's list of features. No word yet on what it costs to shoot at space rocks or pilot bizarre hoversnakes.
In an interview with Phil Harrison, which took place at GDC, they laid on the porn questions with the Sony bigwig pretty thick. It appears the "semi-official" blog was trying to semi-irritate Harrison.

The interviewer asks if Home will allow for "adult content" between the avatars? Harrison dismisses that. Then the interviewer presses by asking if players will be allowed to upload porn and invite people into their private space to watch. Harrison tries to end the line of questioning, "I'm disappointed that you would use those as the first questions. I think Home should be used for a much wider and more beneficial scope than that, but I think that people can express their creativity inside Home in a wide variety of ways and it's not necessarily for us to dictate what that should be. However, if somebody feels uncomfortable about an encounter on Home, it's very easy for them to ban that person from their friends list"

Well, the semi-official blog certainly got away with asking some very off-message questions. Although, for all we know, it's some strange twist in Sony's European PS3 marketing to plant the idea of porn in people's minds. We do know that a majority of Three Speech's information is Euro based, but our requests for the name of their editor and a list of their writers have been ignored. We still have no idea who Three Speech is and what they represent. These porn questions would certainly not be the most bizarre tactic we've seen implemented in the European campaign.

Three Speech presses Harrison about PS3 porn originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Mar 2007 01:00:00 EST. What a swanky pad! We'd love to sit around and play games at ThreeRooms. Without further ado, we present the knowledge gained at this event.

Phil Harrison took a picture of everyone in a room, popped the memory stick into a PS3, turned on HOME, and in a matter of seconds, he had placed the picture into a frame and it was sitting on a shelf in his personal HOME-space. Pretty neat.

In another room, he put up a Bravia TV (figures it's a Bravia, huh?) and made a Casino Royale trailer play on it, with proximity-related audio. Oh, then he picked up the TV and threw it down a set of stairs. Not in real life... that would make Nick angry.

Tom Kiss took some video of Phil and three other guys playing LittleBigPlanet. It's still cute.

The lobby size of 64 users in HOME is likely to not change, since that's pretty crowded when text bubbles are popping up everywhere.

Here's a biggie: Remote Play from any wireless hotspot in the world will be available with the 1.6 firmware update. That means anywhere you go with a wireless connection, you can get any video, music, or photos from your PlayStation 3 right onto your PSP. Oh, that's hot.

That's about it. Check out Tom Kiss's (kisses? oh, someone please smirk) article and scope out his pictures and videos
ThreeSpeech at ThreeRooms... some bits of info here and there originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Mar 2007 15:00:00 EST. First, though, the news. ThreeSpeech has been circulating some rumors regarding the European PS3 launch -- the actual date, firmware updates, add-ons, etc. The firmware update rumor is the most interesting (and most viable): the update would allow multi-tasking and the Remote Play option (or... increased functionality of that option). Multi-tasking would be great. Waiting for those downloads is a pain. Also of note is the idea that only the 60GB version will be available at GPB 425 or less. To all of these, Sony has dismissed as speculation or declined to comment. Take your pick.

What's the idea? It's true. Maybe not all of it, but the multi-tasking and the availability seem likely. Why? Well, ThreeSpeech gets a lot of crap for the "semi-official" nonsense, but think about this: if they are affiliated with Sony, would Sony have the guts to leak info, deny it, then "surprise" people when it's actually true (and good news, for a change)? Maybe. Maybe not. Cash in your two cents, we'll see what happens!
Sony dismisses European launch rumors, but... originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Dec 2006 14:30:00 EST. What did he find out? Well, if he were allowed to question Phil Harrison ruthlessly rather than a tight 15-minute Q&A shared with everyone else, probably a lot more. A short list to summarize:

Sony currently has no plans to allow homebrewers access to the RSX graphics chip.

Don't hold your breath for any sort of VGA cables. You weren't? Okay.

As we've reported, Gran Turismo HD will be free to download in Japan on December 24th. More free content will follow -- so that's cool. Just send it stateside, Sony! And... Europe-side?

The Remote Play feature is going to allow acces to your PS3 from you PSP via any WiFi spot on the planet. I personally thought it was just the PS3's wireless that the PSP would read -- so to me, this is great news.

Phil Harrison's favorite non-Sony game is Nintendogs, which interestingly enough got a perfect 40 score in Famitsu -- a coveted score indeed. Just a little fun fact.

We were promised some insight as to how Lair was shaping up. Poor Ben. Poor us! Lair wasn't available for play. Why? Since Ben is a smooth individual, he flirted around and found out that the current build of Lair is extremely unstable. To quote the lady he spoke with, "The problem is there's something very wrong with Lair." Oh no! I'm going to go ahead and speculate they've been working on it since the Tokyo Game Show and have too many loose codes hanging around that would seize the game -- or didn't get to complete some graphic models that are fairly integral to the game (like, oh, dragons). Whatever! In any case, check out Ben's experience. It sounded like a blast... now I just have to find a damn PS3 now that finals are over! Hooray for college.

[thank you very much for the news, Ben! He gets to take an all-expenses paid trip to London courtesy of Sony and ThreeSpeech to attend a meet and greet event. He will meet Phil Harrison, and he will greet Phil with some hard-hitting questions submitted by you! Hopefully! Ben also gets to check out unreleased titles in their latest build, such as Lair and Motorstorm. If you want to know anything about those games, let him know on his blog in advance and he'll get back to us. Hopefully! Personally, I just want to know if the games are fun -- I don't care about graphics or SIXAXIS functionality or if Phil Harrison's teeth are straight -- I just want the games to be fun. Anyway, comment on his blog your questions or concerns -- or here. Whatever. What'd Phil say? In response to a question asking about which title Sony is relying on to sell the PS3, he said "a lot of people talked about the 'killer app' and actually it's the killer catalogue you want. It's not about having a single title like a Mario or a Sonic on which you rest the entire platform personality on. It's about having a wide catalogue that satisfies a number of different consumer tastes and styles." Yes, it so is.

When asked about what changes the PS3 will spark in the gaming industry (PSX, sorry, PSOne brought 3-D, PS2 brought free-roaming games like GTAIII), Phil actually didn't go the graphics route -- instead, he cited artificial intelligence and physics as well as the whole push to this 1080p HD thing.

Asking first about the best use of the SIXAXIS so far and then if rumble is gone forever, Phil didn't cite a "best use" for the SIXAXIS, but said what he liked. As far as rumble is concerned, it's probably gone. Sorry, mates, let's leave that to a third-party mod and software developer support.

Interestingly, Phil Harrison said that Sony is working on a way for you to record your own gameplay footage, save it to the hard drive, then upload it onto the web. That's pretty cool, especially if you really like to show off your madd skillz.

Firmware updates? Will they be few and far between or a weekly plague like Windows updates (sorry, but I'm sick of that little icon popping up each time I boot up)? Phil says they are focusing on the day one update and will probably have another one in time for the European launch.

There are a couple more questions that yield surprising and interesting answers, but you'll have to check out Three Speech for yourself. Or you could get the full interview in the upcoming Official Playstation Magazine, on sale November 15th.

[via Three Speech]
Phil Harrison says: PS3 will be well-rounded (and very shiny) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 20:30:00 EST.
