Timegate, the studio behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice">Section 8</a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/aliens-colonial-marines"><em>Aliens: Colonial Marines</em></a>, laid off its entire staff today, <a href="http://kotaku.com/the-studio-behind-aliens-colonial-marines-just-laid-of-498772251?utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Twitter&amp;utm_source=Kotaku_Twitter&amp;utm_medium=Socialflow">Kotaku</a> reports.<br />
<br />
On May 2, Timegate filed for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/02/colonial-marines-co-dev-timegate-files-for-bankruptcy-protection/">bankruptcy protection</a>, citing a debt of up to $50 million. The filing revealed that Timegate owed large sums to 50 companies, including Epic Games, Agora Games and DJ2 Entertainment. In April, Timegate <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/18/timegate-loses-southpeak-appeal/">lost an appeal</a> against publisher SouthPeak Interactive, potentially losing the Section 8 license and adding $7.35 million to its debt. SouthPeak fought for Timegate's closure in arbitration and won, leading to today's layoffs, the report says.<br />
<br />
Timegate let go <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/04/report-layoffs-at-aliens-colonial-marines-dev-timegate-studios/">25 employees</a> in March, citing a rough transition to next-gen consoles and a publishing deal that fell through. The studio's most recent project is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/minimum-a-free-to-play-shooter-from-timegate/"><em>Minimum</em></a>, a free-to-play shooter for PC that was supposed to launch on Steam Early Access on April 16. <em>Minimum</em> is currently not listed anywhere on Steam.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/09/report-timegate-closes-its-doors/">Report: Timegate closes its doors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 May 2013 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8"><i>Section 8</i></a> developer and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/aliens-colonial-marines"><i>Aliens: Colonial Marines</i></a> co-developer TimeGate Studios has filed for bankruptcy protection in the Texas Southern Bankruptcy Court, revealing that it owes its creditors between $10 million and $50 million in debt.<br />
<br />
Court documents note that TimeGate seeks protection from creditors while it reexamines its finances, <a href="http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/2/4293890/section-8-timegate-studios-aliens-colonial-marines-bankruptcy">Polygon</a> reports. Currently, the company owes large, unspecified amounts to partners such as Epic Games, Agora Games and DJ2 Entertainment. The petition names nearly 50 creditors in all.<br />
<br />
TimeGate <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/18/timegate-loses-southpeak-appeal/">recently lost</a> an appeal in its long-running legal battle with publisher SouthPeak Interactive, potentially owing $7.35 million in damages and losing its rights to the <em>Section 8 </em>intellectual property. <i>Aliens: Colonial Marines</i>, which TimeGate developed in partnership with Gearbox Software, is the subject of an ongoing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/sega-and-gearbox-targeted-in-aliens-colonial-marines-lawsuit/">class action lawsuit</a>.<br />
<br />
TimeGate's current project, the minimalist free-to-play shooter <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/minimum-a-free-to-play-shooter-from-timegate/"><i>Minimum</i></a>, was announced in April.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/02/colonial-marines-co-dev-timegate-files-for-bankruptcy-protection/">Colonial Marines co-dev TimeGate files for bankruptcy protection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 May 2013 18:45:00 EST. It is currently working on the free-to-play shooter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/minimum-a-free-to-play-shooter-from-timegate/">Minimum</a></em>. Meanwhile, Southpeak is busy... um, looks like it's busy making money through litigation. The publisher hasn't produced a game since <em>Stronghold 3</em> in 2011 according to its own website.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/18/timegate-loses-southpeak-appeal/">TimeGate loses SouthPeak appeal, faces $7.3M in damages</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 11:00:00 EST. In Titan, the "signature" game mode <a href="http://playminimum.com/faqs/">according to the FAQ</a>, players support two giant creatures fighting each other during the match.<br /><br />TimeGate also says it hopes to bring "everyone to the development table to influence how the game grows and changes." <em>Minimum</em> will be in closed alpha soon, and is set for a Steam release whenever it's ready.<br /><br />TimeGate is probably best known at the moment for its work on <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/minimum"><em>Aliens: Colonial Marines</em></a>, but the company also made <em>Section 8</em> and <em>Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns</em> in the past, so <em>Minimum</em> is coming from a substantial history of development experience for PC.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: The game will be available through Steam's Early Access channel on April 16 in North America.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/minimum-a-free-to-play-shooter-from-timegate/">Minimum: a free-to-play shooter from TimeGate [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 03:20:00 EST. The update should automatically install on Steam, so unfortunately there's no way to keep that particular glitch (feature?) in your game.<br /><br />When <em>Colonial Marines</em> launched in February, we found it to be a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/12/aliens-colonial-marines-review/">broken, unfinished mess</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/12/metareview-aliens-colonial-marines/">most others agreed</a>. Since it hit stores, developers Gearbox, TimeGate and publisher Sega have yet to agree where the blame lies. TimeGate <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/04/report-layoffs-at-aliens-colonial-marines-dev-timegate-studios/">let go 25 people</a> in early March.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/18/aliens-colonial-marines-patch-fixes-a-lot-of-things-even-the-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Aliens: Colonial Marines patch fixes a lot of things, even the flamethrower</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/18/aliens-colonial-marines-patch-fixes-a-lot-of-things-even-the-f/">Aliens: Colonial Marines patch fixes a lot of things, even the flamethrower</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Mar 2013 21:15:00 EST. TimeGate President Adel Chaveleh says the layoffs are spurred, in part, by the transition to next-gen consoles, and Polygon cites a publishing deal that fell through.<br /><br />"Today, we had to make the difficult decision to let go of some great game developers," Chaveleh says. "This is never easy, and we're doing all we can to assist those developers affected. TimeGate is preparing, as is the entire industry, for the transition to next-generation consoles and new business models. A scrounged sentry turret sits idle in a corner of the room, slowly scanning for signs of non-human life. Raging storms outside mask the sounds of creatures scuttling through air ducts, but the ever-present rhythmic beeping of motion trackers fill the air with ferocious frequency as the alien menace approaches.<br /><br />Murky shapes take form as they leap into the light, slick, inky-black creatures with pronounced ridges lining their bodies. A shotgun burst drops the first attacker in an instant, its inert body slumping to the floor as a burst of acid blood sprays over a nearby squaddie.<br /><br />Gearbox Software is a studio of many talents, but the developer's biggest success on <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Aliens-Colonial-Marines/">Aliens: Colonial Marines</a></em> may well end up being how accurately it's managed to nail the feel of the famous sci-fi series. This is vital, as anyone who has seen the movies can understand. There's nothing in the science fiction genre quite like the franchise's Xenomorphs, a race of highly aggressive and agile beings with acid for blood and the ability to reproduce through something akin to a cross-species infection. Xenomorphs in <em>Aliens: Colonial Marines</em> slide through the environment with the same sort of ease that they do in the movies, as we learned during a recent hands-on demo of the game's campaign. An unseen network of air ducts connects every room and corridor, so any alien that slips out of sight will eventually emerge elsewhere. <em>Probably </em>behind you.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/aliens-colonial-marines-12-11-2012/">Aliens: Colonial Marines (12/11/2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/aliens-colonial-marines-12-11-2012/#5491837"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/alienscm001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/aliens-colonial-marines-12-11-2012/#5491838"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/alienscm002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/aliens-colonial-marines-12-11-2012/#5491839"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/alienscm003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/aliens-colonial-marines-12-11-2012/#5491840"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/alienscm004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/aliens-colonial-marines-12-11-2012/#5491841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/alienscm005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/11/surviving-the-xenomorph-offensive-in-aliens-colonial-marines/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Surviving the Xenomorph offensive in Aliens: Colonial Marines</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/11/surviving-the-xenomorph-offensive-in-aliens-colonial-marines/">Surviving the Xenomorph offensive in Aliens: Colonial Marines</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Dec 2012 10:00:00 EST. Gearbox head Randy Pitchford says that Shoot Many Robots studio Demiurge Studios has been overseeing the Wii U version for the past nine months, alongside both Nerve and Timegate.<br /><br />Pitchford couldn't speak to many specifics of the game, but he did extol the Wii U controller. "When I play with the controller, I immediately realize that for the types of games I like to play and make, this is the best controller I've ever had from Nintendo." He also teases one potential use for the WiiPad, saying, "For <em>Aliens: Colonial Marines</em>, it's really exciting to have that screen there because I can do things that are very unique to this universe. For instance, we have a motion tracker in this universe. Now our motion tracker can literally be in our hands and we can see and hear it -and scan the room in 360 degrees, since it's a motion device."<br /><br /><em>Aliens: Colonial Marines</em> launches on February 13, 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The Wii U version is expected some time beyond that date.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/04/aliens-colonial-marines-wii-u-version-overseen-by-shoot-many-ro/">Aliens: Colonial Marines Wii U version overseen by Shoot Many Robots studio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Jun 2012 10:00:00 EST. The ruling also rewrote Timegate's publishing contract with SouthPeak, granting SouthPeak a permanent license for <em>Section 8</em>'s IP and its sequels.<br /><br />The arbitrator's decision was thrown out on the grounds that the rewritten publishing contract did not match the intent of the original document. Arbitrators are allowed to rewrite legally binding agreements, but only so long as the resulting agreement matches the spirit of the original document. Timegate and SouthPeak's original publishing agreement was very clear that Timegate would retain all IP rights for the brand -- changing this was beyond the scope of the original contract's intent and was therefore inappropriate.<br /><br />This all started back in the neolithic caveman days of 2009, when Timegate sued SouthPeak, claiming that the publisher had altered revenue reports in order to retain royalties meant for Timegate, which is <em>embezzlement</em>.<br /><br />SouthPeak countersued, claiming that Timegate fraudulently misrepresented itself in order to convince SouthPeak (which acquired original <em>Section 8</em> publisher Gamecock) to enter into the publishing agreement. It also claimed that <em>Section 8</em>'s lackluster retail performance was solely Timegate's fault, and that Timegate had failed to contribute a required $2.5 million in development funds, misused the $7.5 million in development funds provided by SouthPeak, and failed to give SouthPeak revenue from <em>Section 8</em>'s PC sequel and PS3 port.<br /><br />This tale is likely far from over, however, as SouthPeak still has the ability to appeal Judge Ellison's ruling.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/timegate-wins-arbitration-dispute-against-southpeak/">Timegate wins arbitration dispute against SouthPeak</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 22:00:00 EST. Timegate's undeniably beefy multiplayer-centric shooter, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice">Section 8: Prejudice</a>, </em>has been racking up kills on Xbox Live Arcade since late April. In a little under two weeks, PS3 owners will get to see what all the fuss is about (hint: skydiving), as <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/07/13/section-8-prejudice-drops-into-psn-with-some-extra-weight/#utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PSBlog+%28PlayStation.Blog%29">PlayStation Blog</a> just announced the downloadable, $15 title will touch down on PSN July 26 in North America, and July 27 in Europe.<br />
<br />
To help jump-start the community's growth on the new platform, Timegate is handing out the Blitz Armor Pack and Overdrive Map Pack to anyone who grabs the game during its first week on PSN. What's more, the first 1,000 PlayStation Plus users to download the title will receive in-game Hunter Armor, as well as a free download of the original <em>Section 8</em>. You're essentially doubling your bang for your buck, and by "bang," we mean "<em>whoosh</em>," because that's the sound you make when you're skydiving.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/13/section-8-prejudice-diving-into-playstation-store-july-26/">Section 8: Prejudice diving into PlayStation Store July 26</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Jul 2011 17:30:00 EST. TimeGate Studios has introduced <a href="http://warisprejudice.com/news/laws-of-physics-broken-new-map-pack-and-game-mode-coming-to-section-8%C2%AE-prejudice%E2%84%A2/">a new map pack and game mode</a> coming to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a> later this month. The Frontier Colonies Map Pack will be out on July 13 on Xbox 360 and PC for 320 Microsoft Points/$3.99, and will bring Desolation, a desert map featuring the ruins of a previous colonization, and Overseer, which offers fighting through military facilities in a "habitable forest valley." Both of those maps will be available for all game modes.<br />
<br />
They'll also support the new Skirmish mode, which will arrive for free later this summer. Skirmish mode plays like Team Deathmatch, but all of that killing is taking place while you're also earning Victory points for completing missions. Control Points are out of the game, however, and players will need to adjust as needed. Sounds interesting -- TimeGate promises more info on that mode and a release of the map pack on PSN coming soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/09/section-8-prejudice-getting-new-maps-and-mode-this-month/">Section 8: Prejudice getting new maps and mode this month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Jul 2011 01:25:00 EST. If you can handle a hot drop from orbit, then just maybe you can handle this<em> <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice">Section 8: Prejudice</a></em> news bomb. First, the Overdrive Map Pack is now available for $4 Xbox 360 and $4.49 on Games for Windows Live. In celebration of the two new maps, <em>Prejudice</em> players can enjoy a <a href="http://warisprejudice.com/news/section-8%C2%AE-prejudice%E2%84%A2-map-pack-now-available/">double XP weekend</a> starting on Friday at 1AM EST and ending on Monday at 1AM EST.<br />

Second, a patch has been delivered to both versions of the game, tweaking or fixing several stability and gameplay issues. Players will be happy to hear that several crashes have been fixed and that autobalance will now "more aggressively" attempt to places players with their friends during matches. Head over to the TimeGate forums for the <a href="http://forums.timegate.com/showthread.php?t=21731">full patch notes</a> and find a new trailer after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-overdrive-map-pack-dlc/">Section 8: Prejudice (Overdrive Map Pack DLC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-overdrive-map-pack-dlc/#4180809"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/s9-win32-r-2011-05-12-17-28-20-06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-overdrive-map-pack-dlc/#4180810"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/s9-win32-r-2011-05-20-11-10-40-91_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-overdrive-map-pack-dlc/#4180811"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/s9-win32-r-2011-05-20-11-44-10-81_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-overdrive-map-pack-dlc/#4180812"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/s9-win32-r-2011-05-20-15-54-19-38_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-overdrive-map-pack-dlc/#4180813"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/s9-win32-r-2011-05-25-13-32-04-17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/section-8-prejudice-patched-dlcd-and-double-xpd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8: Prejudice patched, DLC'd and double XP'd</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/section-8-prejudice-patched-dlcd-and-double-xpd/">Section 8: Prejudice patched, DLC'd and double XP'd</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 21:00:00 EST. Are you familiar with the nooks, crannies and sweet, skydiveable air above each of the maps included in TimeGate Studios' beefy downloadable shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a>? Next Tuesday, June 1, the game will receive the Overdrive Map Pack, a bundle which includes two new maps which will be playable in all game modes: A magma-covered battlefield known as Abaddon, and a decidedly colder frozen wasteland called Sky Dock.<br />
<br />
The two new maps will launch on Xbox Live Marketplace and Games for Windows Marketplace for 320 Microsoft Points ($3.99). Sounds like a fair price for the raw, visceral thrill of plummeting into a pool of volcanic rock. Yes, that's not the smartest strategic move, but <em>c'mon</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/28/section-8-prejudice-overdrive-map-pack-coming-june-1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8: Prejudice Overdrive Map Pack coming June 1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/28/section-8-prejudice-overdrive-map-pack-coming-june-1/">Section 8: Prejudice Overdrive Map Pack coming June 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 May 2011 12:30:00 EST. TimeGate has <a href="http://warisprejudice.com/news/new-assault-mode-unlocked-as-section-8-prejudice-community-reaches-10-million-kills/">announced</a> that players across the PC and Xbox 360 versions of <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice">Section 8: Prejudice</a></em> have reached the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/05/10-million-kills-in-section-8-prejudice-unlocks-assault-mode/">combined goal</a> of 10 million in-game kills, thus unlocking the new Assault Mode. The objective-based gametype is now available to all players on both versions of the game. In Assault, the attacking team tries to capture all designated control points on a map, while the defending team attempts to hold onto them for as long as possible.<br />
<br />
TimeGate has also announced plans for an Xbox Live Game with Developers session this Sunday, May 15 from 5-8PM ET. Head over to the Xbox.com <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Community/Events/GameWithDev">events page</a> for details.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/section-8-prejudice-players-reach-10-million-kills-assault-mod/">Section 8: Prejudice players reach 10 million kills, Assault Mode unlocked</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 May 2011 14:30:00 EST. To coincide with the launch of the PC version of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a>, TimeGate has announced a new community objective for both PC and Xbox 360 players. A kill counter has been launched on the <em>Prejudice</em> <a href="http://warisprejudice.com/">website</a> tracking online kills across both versions of the game. Once the counter <a href="http://warisprejudice.com/news/help-the-section-8-prejudice-community-get-to-10-million-kills-to-unlock-new-assault-mode/">reaches 10 million</a> -- which will hopefully happen soon, given it's already over 7.5 million -- the new Assault mode will be unlocked.<br />
<br />
In Assault mode, the attacking team attempts to capture all control points on the map. The defending team, naturally, tries to hold off the attackers as long as it can. The new mode will be free to both PC and Xbox 360 players once it is unlocked.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/05/10-million-kills-in-section-8-prejudice-unlocks-assault-mode/">10 million kills in Section 8: Prejudice unlocks Assault mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 May 2011 18:55:00 EST. Well, this is certainly unexpected. No Xbox Live Arcade game to date has been afforded a dedicated server option. That is, until now. TimeGate Studios has announced that its recently released, multiplayer-centric title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a>, now allows Xbox Live players to access and play on PC-hosted servers through <a href="http://www.gameservers.com/section8prejudice/">GameServers</a> ... for a small fee.<br />
<br />
Dedicated servers can host ranked or unranked matches with support for up to 32 players. The monthly charges will run you $1.29 a player, plus a little extra <em>something something</em> if you want to purchase support for a standalone voice chat program. You can place your order for a dedicated server for the XBLA version now -- PC and PS3 players should look sharp, though, as the same support is on its way to their respective versions of the shooter.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/25/dedicated-server-support-added-to-section-8-prejudice-on-xbla/">Dedicated server support added to Section 8: Prejudice on XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Apr 2011 19:00:00 EST. With <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a> now available on Xbox Live Arcade, TimeGate has announced the pre-order bonuses for the upcoming PC version. <em>Prejudice</em> will be available via Steam, Games for Windows Live and Direct2Drive, all of which will offer different pre-order incentives.<br />
<br />
Those who pre-order on <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/97100">Steam</a> will receive a ten percent discount, knocking the $15 price down to $13.49. <a href="http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Games/section-8-prejudice/">Games for Windows Live</a> pre-orders get the Explosion Pack, which unlocks the
<meta charset="utf-8" />
Riot Mod pulse cannon as well as Concussion Detpacks for in-game use. <a href="http://www.direct2drive.com/2/10720/product/Buy-Section-8:-Prejudice-Download?hph">Direct2Drive</a> pre-orders also get in-game goodies, namely the Lightning Pack, which unlocks EMP rounds for the pulse cannon, tagger rounds for the sniper rifle and Blitz armor. <em>Section 8: Prejudice</em> will be released on PC May 4.<br />
<br />
TimeGate has also released a video detailing the game's online stat tracking portal because, hey, this is a portal kind of week. Check it out after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/23/section-8-prejudice-pc-pre-order-bonuses-stat-portal-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8: Prejudice PC pre-order bonuses, stat portal video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/23/section-8-prejudice-pc-pre-order-bonuses-stat-portal-video/">Section 8: Prejudice PC pre-order bonuses, stat portal video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 23 Apr 2011 02:00:00 EST. It's got a little slice of everything included in the game: Hectic gunfights, vehicles, armor customization, objective-based gameplay and, of course, some of the most haphazard skydiving in recorded history.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/13/section-8-prejudice-launch-trailer-skydives-into-our-hearts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8: Prejudice launch trailer skydives into our hearts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/13/section-8-prejudice-launch-trailer-skydives-into-our-hearts/">Section 8: Prejudice launch trailer skydives into our hearts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Apr 2011 21:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/22/section-8-prejudice-dev-diary-is-weird-informative/">Joy</a> is back and, it would seem, still single in the latest developer diary for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a>. Timegate Studios has dated two of the three versions of its upcoming FPS sequel <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a>. Via its Twitter account, the developer confirmed that the game will land on Xbox Live Marketplace in two weeks on April 20, followed by the Windows version on Games for Windows Live come May 4.<br />
<br />
The PS3 release doesn't have a firm date; the game is simply noted as coming "summer 2011" to PSN. Whenever it hits, it'll carry the same $15 price tag as the other versions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/05/section-8-prejudice-drops-april-20-for-360-pc-and-ps3-to-follo/">Section 8: Prejudice drops April 20 for 360, PC and PS3 to follow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 21:00:00 EST. If can get past the strange introduction and interludes in the latest <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a> developer diary, there's actually some worthwhile information to be had. If, for some reason, you actually <em>enjoy</em> said interludes, it looks like we'll learn more about Joy's love life in later episodes.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/22/section-8-prejudice-dev-diary-is-weird-informative/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8: Prejudice dev diary is weird, informative</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/22/section-8-prejudice-dev-diary-is-weird-informative/">Section 8: Prejudice dev diary is weird, informative</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 01:00:00 EST. The original <em>Section 8</em> was an unknown quantity launching within weeks of the likes of <em>Halo 3: ODST</em> and <em>Batman: Arkham Asylum</em>. To put it lightly, <em>Section 8</em> had quite an uphill battle on its hands. Now, developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/23/whats-in-a-name-timegate-studios/">TimeGate Studios</a> has prepared a disruptive secret weapon: Turning the sequel, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a>, into a budget download.<br />
<br />
Based on what I played at PAX East, I'd say it's a strategy that might pay off.<br />

<font color="gray"><em>Most of the time, company names are obscure enough that we have no clue what their origin is. <br />
<strong> Joystiq</strong>: So, TimeGate. You were just watching a lot of Stargate, right?<br />
<br />
<strong>TimeGate Studios head Adel Chaveleh</strong>: "The concept was that we had a lot of different ideas for game types -- there was fantasy-themed, WWII-themed, sci-fi. Basically, as a company, we want to kind of be a portal to our fans and to ourselves to different worlds and universes. So TimeGate was the name that we came up with that seemed to kind of communicate that. Ironically, it played out exactly that way. It's like, fantasy with <em>Kohan</em>, and <em>Axis &amp; Allies</em> is WWII, and here we are with our own sci-fi franchise [<em>Section 8</em>]. I'm trying to think of what other time periods we can go to, but we'll see I guess." [laughs]<br />

Like many indie developers, TimeGate Studios' origins are humble. "We set up a card table and called it TimeGate. That was a little over 12 years ago," president and CEO Adel Chaveleh recalled during our recent meeting. "We knew the game we wanted before we knew how the hell to make a game," he added with a wide grin. That game was <em>Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns</em>, which went on to earn an <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/kohan-immortal-sovereigns">87 Metacritic score</a> and a handful of awards. <br />
<br />
Today, TimeGate isn't far from launching its first digital-only title, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice">Section 8: Prejudice</a></em> -- the sequel to 2009's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8/"><em>Section 8</em></a> -- and Chaveleh is noticeably excited about the prospects of the company's future in publishing.<br />
<br />
"In the midst of a year, not only did we finish development of the whole sequel, but we've switched our whole business model, and we've built that internal publishing infrastructure," he beamed. "Now that we've got that pipeline established, we're looking at more content -- both internally, and we're starting to talk with some external developers, as well, about being a conduit for either their content or helping us develop content." Chaveleh wouldn't reveal any of these collaborators, but it's clear TimeGate understands that, whether physical or digital products, the publisher still holds all the cards.<br />

The follow-up to Timegate Studios's coldly received 2009 multiplayer shooter, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice">Section 8: Prejudice</a>, </em>will avoid the boxed-copy retail battlefield and will instead aim to "corner" the digital market. The developer announced today that <em>Prejudice</em> will come to Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and PC retail portals, including Steam and Games for Windows Marketplace, as a $15 download when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/timegate-judges-section-8-prejudice-ready-for-debut-early-201/">it launches early next year</a>. <br />
<br />
<em>Prejudice</em> will include a single-player campaign, support for up to 32 players in online multiplayer and a new four-player co-op mode called Swarm. Offline players will also be able to partake in multiplayer, as the game can swap out those pesky humans for emotionless, calculating bots. <br />
<br />
Timegate has also pledged to support the sequel post-launch through "a substantial downloadable content plan," though specific details have yet to be revealed.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/15/section-8-prejudice-download/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8 shows Prejudice against retail, will be a $15 download</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/15/section-8-prejudice-download/">Section 8 shows Prejudice against retail, will be a $15 download</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Dec 2010 17:20:00 EST. Though many are now realizing its beauty in multiplayer shooters, the jetpack is a woefully underused tool in the FPS developer's work box. My love affair with the jetpack began many years ago on the PC with Dynamix's <em>Starsiege: Tribes</em> -- unfortunately, that love affair has taken a near 15-year, involuntary hiatus.<br />
<br />
<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/halo-reach">Halo: Reach</a></em> went a long way in sating my desire for airborne multiplayer combat, but it looks like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice">Section 8: Prejudice</a></em> will go even further toward addressing that desire. Jetpacks abound -- like they did in the original <em>Section 8</em> -- as do a glut of other variables to turn the objective-focused multiplayer into a rock, paper, scissors playground. But while I was excited by a lot of the gameplay ideas I saw in <em>Prejudice</em>, I was just as concerned about the dated visuals and subdued personality.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-preview-10-26-10/">Section 8: Prejudice (Preview 10/26/10)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-preview-10-26-10/#3505901"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/s9-win32-r-2010-10-04-18-53-05-67-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-preview-10-26-10/#3505902"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/s9-win32-r-2010-10-04-19-32-04-90-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-preview-10-26-10/#3505903"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/s9-win32-r-2010-10-04-19-34-12-55-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-preview-10-26-10/#3505904"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/s9-win32-r-2010-10-05-09-50-33-47-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/section-8-prejudice-preview-10-26-10/#3505905"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/s9-win32-r-2010-10-05-10-15-22-73-copy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/section-8-prejudice-preview-turn-on-drop-in-tune-out/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8: Prejudice preview: Turn on, drop in, tune out</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/section-8-prejudice-preview-turn-on-drop-in-tune-out/">Section 8: Prejudice preview: Turn on, drop in, tune out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Oct 2010 13:30:00 EST. TimeGate has announced that a multiplayer beta for the PC version of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em></a> will launch sometime this fall. The beta will give players their first look at the new features introduced in the sequel and will also show off the "enhanced" Games for Windows Live integration, which includes "streamlined matchmaking and improved server browsing." You can sign up for the beta right now at the official <a href="http://beta.timegate.com/"><em>Section 8: Prejudice</em> website</a>.<br />

To attract players to the game's recently announced, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8-prejudice"><em>prejudicial</em> sequel</a>, Timegate has <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/10/11/section-8-50-off-on-psn-prejudice-coming-to-ps3-in-2011/">cut the price</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a> to $14.99 on the PlayStation Store. We think this is a great move, only because the company didn't cut the price of the 360 version of the game, which is, in a way, <em>kind of prejudiced</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/section-8-price-cut-down-to-15-on-playstation-store/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8 price cut down to $15 on PlayStation Store</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/section-8-price-cut-down-to-15-on-playstation-store/">Section 8 price cut down to $15 on PlayStation Store</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Oct 2010 21:30:00 EST. TimeGate Studios has just announced a sequel to its multiplayer-focused 2009 multiplatform FPS, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a>. Titled <em>Section 8: Prejudice</em>, the game -- destined for yet-unknown platforms, though the original hit PC, 360 and PS3 -- is targeted for an "early 2011" release. <br />
<br />
Based on the first trailer (which you can find after the break), we're looking at new abilities, locations and weaponry. The title, as the clip's narrator so gruffly puts it, comes from the fact that in the game's universe, wars are being fought based on -- wait for it -- <em>prejudice</em>. <br />
<br />
In this universe, we do our best to combat prejudice through tolerance, understanding and generally not pre-judging people. We don't need fancy power-armor, though it's admittedly pretty damn cool.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/timegate-judges-section-8-prejudice-ready-for-debut-early-201/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TimeGate judges Section 8: Prejudice ready for debut, 'early 2011' release</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/timegate-judges-section-8-prejudice-ready-for-debut-early-201/">TimeGate judges Section 8: Prejudice ready for debut, 'early 2011' release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 16:45:00 EST. Like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/25/psn-thursday-blue-toad-murder-edition/">in North America</a>, TimeGame Studios' jetpack-powered FPS will be making an exclusive run on the PlayStation Network in Europe. While <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a> was originally a PC/Xbox 360 retail game, the PSN version adds extra features, like <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2010/01/19/section-8-map-pack-now-available-for-360/">maps</a> not found in the original game.<br />
<br />
Section 8 will be available during next week's European <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn-thursday">PSN Thursday</a> update, on April 15th, for &euro;24.99.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/07/ps3s-section-8-lands-in-europe-on-april-15th/">PS3's Section 8 lands in Europe on April 15th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Apr 2010 11:30:00 EST. We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/section-8-still-preparing-to-drop-on-ps3/">brought word yesterday</a> that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a> was on its way to PS3, and that's simultaneously gotten more and less solid -- a phenomenon we're pretty sure would freak even Bill Nye out. While we know concretely that it will arrive on Sony's console this spring, we also learned it won't be arriving in a <em>solid </em>form at all, as the title will be exclusively available on PSN.<br />
<br />
Moreover, this new version will include the three maps 360 and PC players had to <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2010/01/19/section-8-map-pack-now-available-for-360/">pay extra for</a> and the ability for players to host games on their PCs (as seen in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/05/section-8-brings-user-created-dedicated-servers-to-xbox-360/">the Xbox 360 version</a>). We worry that a bit too much time has passed to get PlayStation owners interested in <em>Section 8</em>, but putting it on PSN seems like a darn smart way to do it. We also suspect <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/23/timegate-sues-southpeak-for-alleged-breaches-in-publishing-agree/">that a certain legal commotion</a> might have a <em>little</em> involvement with the decision.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/16/section-8-coming-to-ps3-download-only-with-added-content/">Section 8 coming to PS3 download-only with added content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Feb 2010 17:00:00 EST. The possibility of jetpack-rich, <em>Tribes</em>-esque action on PS3 just got a little less nebulous. Speaking with <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/106/1069094p1.html">IGN</a>, a TimeGate spokesperson said that the developer's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a> would be coming to PS3 at some point, though no formal release window has been settled on.<br />
<br />
The news shouldn't come as a surprise to the Joystiq faithful, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/23/timegate-sues-southpeak-for-alleged-breaches-in-publishing-agree/">we reported</a> last December that TimeGate had alleged that publisher <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SouthPeak/">SouthPeak</a> entered into an unauthorized PS3 licensing deal for the game with Russian company 1C. Whether or not the suit will keep the game in legal limbo (and for how long if so) remains to be seen.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/section-8-still-preparing-to-drop-on-ps3/">Section 8 still preparing to drop on PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Feb 2010 13:39:00 EST. Chalk up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/gamecock-acquisition-goes-south-vendors-accuse-southpeak-of-no/">another frustrated party</a> accusing SouthPeak of wrongdoing. The company has been sued by <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8">Section 8</a> </em>developer TimeGate, which alleges that the publisher has withheld royalty payments and entered into a PS3 licensing deal on the game with Russian company IC, an arrangement that TimeGate claims SouthPeak had no right to make.<br />
<br />
In <a href="http://podcasts.aolcdn.com/joystiq/files/TimegateVSouthpeak.pdf">legal documents</a> obtained by Joystiq, TimeGate also alleges that <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/market-section-8-win-an-hdtv-and-a-360/">this SouthPeak T-shirt promotion</a> was unauthorized, that the publisher had mislead TimeGate about sales figures and that the publisher has stated it should not have to adhere to TimeGate's original agreement, as it had been made with Gamecock, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/southpeak-buys-gamecock/">which SouthPeak purchased</a> in late 2008. We've reached out to SouthPeak for comment.<br />
<br />
If you prefer your language far more formal, the lawsuit puts it like this: "[SouthPeak] failed to provide a sufficient sales report, withheld royalty payments and did not adhere to the obligation to act in good faith and fair dealing when they established the sham transaction in order to deprive TimeGate of royalties despite the special relationship between the parties and being in a position of trust."<br />
<br />
No specific amount is mentioned in the suit, with TimeGate asking only for "compensatory damages in an amount to be determined" following an independent audit of <em>Section 8</em>'s sales.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/23/timegate-sues-southpeak-for-alleged-breaches-in-publishing-agree/">TimeGate sues SouthPeak for alleged breaches in publishing agreement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 17:30:00 EST. TimeGate has announced an expansion of its multiplayer-focused shooter, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8">Section 8</a>, </em>with the "Seek and Destroy Map Pack," which adds three new maps and 10 new achievements for 560<span class="album_title"><img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" /></span> ($7). Though the game is available on Xbox 360 as well, the company is only making mention of PC availability for the content at the moment.<br />
<br />
The industry has become so skewed towards a console focus as of late, it's kind of nice to see PC players getting some exclusive love. Now, let's all be real quiet and see if we can detect the exact moment their heads explode when they hear they have to pay for it.<br />

Timegate has released a title update for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a>, which should fix several bugs in the game and tweak a few things. The main fixes include improved matchmaking, a fix for faulty Achievements and improved tank controls. AI bots will now also follow and defend human players, and the update also fixes latency problems and lost stats. There's a host of other smaller tweaks and changes as well, which <a href="http://forums.timegate.com/showthread.php?t=16922">you can read about</a> on the <em>Section 8</em> forums.<br />

Likely not fixed by the patch, a precipitous drop in players since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modern-warfare-2">November 10</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/24/section-8-update-fixes-matchmaking-achievements-more/">Section 8 update fixes matchmaking, Achievements, more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 18:30:00 EST. The latest assault is a new trailer and a couple images for the shooter.<br />
<br />
Don't let the lack of hype for the title fool you; fans of objective-based multiplayer should definitely try out the <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/section-8-demo-slams-onto-xbox-live/">demo</a>, which doles out a taste of the game's dynamic mission system. Oh, and it has jetpacks. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/01/dark-void-pre-order-bonus-a-gold-jetpack/">Everyone likes those</a>, right? Drop into a game and check it out.<br />

First off, as the headline eloquently suggests, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a> has been blessed with a release date. The game will hit North American shelves on September 4, the UK and Asia / Pacific regions on September 11 and the rest of Europe on September 18. So there's that. In other mechanically enhanced soldier news, TimeGate has announced its plans to open a clan and stat portal for the game.<br />
<br />
The clan portal will allow users to access lots of special features, including automatically updating clan tags, establishing clan hierarchies, and reviewing the stats of new applicants. Meanwhile, the stats page will (obviously) list comprehensive stats for the game, including career statistics, records achieved in a single "life," as well as the number of badges earned and feats accomplished. Leaderboards can also be organized by overall stats or restricted to just those within an individual clan. Finally, both Xbox 360 and PC players will enjoy "mutually exclusive" stats, which should hopefully avert any potential "mouse vs. keyboard" flame wars.<br />
<br />
The stats page, located <a href="http://www.joinsection8.com/stats">here</a>, will launch next week alongside the North American release of the game.<br />

TimeGate Studios has <a href="http://forums.timegate.com/showthread.php?t=14429">announced</a> that the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a> open PC beta for North America, Europe and Australia is now ... open. The beta grants users with access to two of the game's multiplayer maps and offers up "a variety of some of the vehicles, weapons, deployables, missions, and equipment." The beta is free, and all that's needed to get fragging is a Fileplanet, IGN or GameSpy account. To sign up, simply visit <a href="http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/section-8/">this link</a> and fill out a few forms. You'll then be given a CD-Key and access to download the beta. The beta is on a first come, first serve basis, so <span style="font-style: italic;">hop to it</span> if you want in.<br />
<br />
To find out if your rig can handle the game, check out the PC specs after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/section-8-open-beta-is-go/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Section 8 open beta is go</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/section-8-open-beta-is-go/">Section 8 open beta is go</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 18:20:00 EST. You've been watching the videos and reading the articles about <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a> and you've thought, "Sure, it's <em>pretty</em> cool that I can drop from space, charge across half a mile of terrain in 10 seconds and then have HQ drop a tank right on the battlefield for me, but what's my <em>motivation</em>?"<br />
<br />
Thankfully, the fine folks at TimeGate have your answer in the form of a new developer diary. The video delves into he history of Section 8 (the good guys), the rise of its best soldier, Alex Corde, and the group's conflict with the Arm of Orion (not the good guys).<br />
<br />
With that out of the way, hopefully we can all just focus on the whole drop-from-the-sky-and-kill-everything aspect of the game now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/video-the-story-behind-section-8/">Video: The story behind Section 8</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 21:57:00 EST. We've got high hopes for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a>, a promising sci-fi FPS from TimeGate. But today we learned that the game has even more going for it than the ability to drop from space and kill a tank (which you can admit is already quite a lot). The devs are also pretty adept at forward thinking.<br />
<br />
Producer Robert Siwiak told <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24191">Gamasutra</a>, "We're already planning on releasing additional map packs and other content, potentially new weapons and vehicles into the mix. After the game has launched, we fully intend to support the community and add in additional content and otherwise fill the gap between now and a potential <em>Section 8</em> sequel."<br />
<br />
Yikes, already thinking sequels, TimeGate? Live in the now!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/plenty-of-post-release-content-planned-for-section-8/">Plenty of post-release content planned for Section 8</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 12:00:00 EST.
