Frictional's Thomas Grip has compiled a list of 10 items that can "take horror games to the next level," and (surprisingly) it doesn't begin with "Everything opposite of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City." It does, however, touch on a few points that could have put the "horror" back into that particular survival-horror title.

Grip suggests "minimal combat," "long build-up" and "doubt" are essential to evolve the horror genre, and we've already seen these aspects work wonderfully in Amnesia. Another aspect Grip notes is "no enemies," which he clarifies as follows: "What I mean is that we need to stop thinking of any creatures that we put into the game as 'enemies.' The word enemy makes us think about war and physical conflict, which is really not the focus in a horror game."

Grip's list seems to focus on different approaches to immersion and connecting to players on an emotional, human level before ensuring they won't be able to sleep properly for a few weeks at least. All 10 points are described in full on Frictional's blog.

Perhaps we'll see a few of these fleshed out in Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, a sequel in development by thechineseroom and overseen by Frictional itself.
Amnesia dev shares secrets of evolving the horror genre originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 May 2012 18:45:00 EST. Only the first player to use an application can earn trophies. To earn trophies, you must link the Sony Entertainment Network account of the first player to use this application with the PS Vita system." Pocket Gamer says the following steps will render that warning useless:

Go to the main menu and hold down the screen for two seconds, until little bubbles appear on the upper-right side of each game's icon. Hit the bubble you want and click "Delete."

A screen reading "All data related to this application will be deleted" will pop up. Hit "OK."

Load the game and you should be good to go.

This process won't delete the previous player's trophies, Pocket Gamer adds.
Pocket Gamer: How to get Trophies in used Vita games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 01:00:00 EST. Oh, yeah. You know more about each other than any other device you've played with previously, but there's always more to learn. Sony has compiled a list of nine tips and tricks for the Vita that may make your life together easier -- as long as you put the toilet seat down, Harold. No really, that's one of the tips.

The list in includes Sony's tricks, but the comments offer a few more gems, such as pressing the plus and minus volume buttons to mute all sound on your Vita. You can also mute it by yelling at the top of your lungs, "Shut up, Vita!" Really, try that one on a crowded bus some time.
Sony posts official tips and tricks for Vita, comments have more originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 26 Feb 2012 14:00:00 EST. With the launch of the 25th Anniversary edition of Super Mario All-Stars for Wii drawing near (this Sunday!), you may be seriously tempted to buy all those classic Mario games again for, like -- what? The fourth time? Think again! Not only is the "Limited Edition" Wii game a veritable ROM dump of the SNES All-Stars (which features graphically and musically enhanced versions of the NES games, by 16-bit standards), it's also missing a lot of the great "glitches" from the original games.

TASVideos has assembled a comprehensive guide to the elite tricks and tactics from the original Super Mario Bros. games -- with pictures! Animated pictures. It serves as a stark reminder to us purists why there's really no substitute for the originals, even when said substitute comes in a nifty box.
Super Mario Bros. tricks explained with animated GIFs originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 04:00:00 EST. Are you working your way to a Platinum in God of War III? You may want to check out this video, which helps you net Hit Man, one of the more challenging Trophies in the game. To get the award, you must perform a 1000 hit combo. Should your fighting skills not be up to snuff, there are two easy (but time consuming) ways of getting the achievement. It can take upwards of 20 minutes of mindless button mashing, but it's a sure-fire way of making sure you get the Bronze Trophy.

Check out the (rather cheap) strategies after the break.
Before getting to those, though, Schappert acknowledged that EA didn't give Dead Space or Mirror's Edge the marketing support those titles deserved. He confessed, "We could have done better and these titles deserved more." He referenced the Dante's Inferno Superbowl ad and the marketing deluge for Mass Effect 2 as examples of the kind of marketing the publisher should be doing for more of its games.

As for Schapper's tips:

Commit yourself to quality. (Okay, that's fairly self explanatory and definitely a motto all publishers should practice.)

Get more from your marketing. (In other words, don't do what EA did to Dead Space and Mirror's Edge.)

Invest in the future. (EA's pushing this one with its sweeping DLC and online strategy.)

Don't abandon your consumer base. (Digital distribution is important, but Schappert believes that discs aren't going the way of the dodo anytime soon. He warns, "Don't jump off that shiny disc too soon.")

Illegitimi non carborundum. (A polite translation might be: "Don't let the cynics get you down," even when things look really bad. A more colloquial expression of this phrase: "Don't worry, be happy.")

EA's Schappert shares five money-making tips originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 16:05:00 EST. If you find yourself coming up short in your quest for victory in the PS3-exclusive multiplayer beta for Bad Company 2, the development team at DICE has a few pointers to help reduce the gap between your win and loss statistics. Bad Company 2 level designer Inge Jøran "Pirelli" Holberg posted a laundry list of tips for attackers and defenders for the beta's Arica Harbor map.

With the map's design in mind, Holberg's tips feature a slew of ideas on how you can destroy specific areas of the map to redirect adversary foot traffic -- right into the sights of your favorite firearm. Our tips? Keep shooting people on the other team and you're bound to win eventually. We're professionals here, folks.
Master Arica Harbor with these Bad Company 2 beta tips originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 29 Nov 2009 21:30:00 EST. Back before you could watch videos created by Nintendo showing off those very same tricks passed from friend to friend by word of mouth - before the internet was even a gleam in Al Gore's eye!

Though our old, embittered brains remember those days fondly, you kids today with your shiny electronics and worldwide exchange of information get the not-so-secret tips straight from the horse's mouth (in sorta high-resolution, no less) on New Super Mario Bros. Wii. After watching the video you see above, we came to a scary realization: there are people out there who might not have any 2D Mario strategies already embedded in their brains. Folks, if you don't have any sort of tactic worked out for red coin collection, we're not sure this video can help you. Or if anyone can, for that matter.

Thankfully, we have a much cooler video after the break.
So, give it a watch, as it features a very cheap Sonic, a pair of Luigis pulling off ridiculous combos mid-air and Bowser being trapped in a very small space.

Some of their advice is obvious, but their points on performing Link's roll ("As you walk, touch the very edge of the screen, then drag your stylus towards Link and quickly slide back to the screen's edge.") and practicing for multiplayer battles in the Temple of the Ocean King are helpful.

Provided that you've already sailed past the fog in the northwestern section of the map, the page of info should be spoiler-free, unlike the forum threads out there riddled with casual posts that give the game's great parts away. We all have our foibles and our obsessions, and that includes you. So we wonder ... what's missing? Is there something you love that we're not covering appropriately? Sure, you can always send us tips, but sometimes, in our lust for the latest Phoenix Wright pointy-finger accessory of doom, we might miss a few import titles. The Unofficial Apple Weblog has the best guide we've seen to making sure your Apple product and your Microsoft product not only play nice, but pretty much kick ass together as well.

We knew about some of the simple things like sharing your Mac's internet connection with your Xbox 360, and having it play nice with your iPod, but there's a slew of other things we were clueless about, like the shareware program that lets you use your Xbox 360 controller on your Mac. That'll come in handy while we try and master that Battlestar Galactica game.

Check out the full guide and spread the love.
How to make your Xbox 360 and your Mac play nice originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Apr 2007 13:24:00 EST. But alas, such may not be the case. We're tough enough to accept it.

With that in mind, where do you guys head for the rest of your news? Our mother-site Joystiq covers the breadth of gaming for most, but there are also rival blogs: Kotaku, Destructoid, and the lot. Or do you prefer more professional, down-to-Earth sites like Gamespot or IGN? Where do we rank on your list of awesomeness?

We'd also like to take this opportunity to remind you about tips. We comb the intertron (and on occasion, the real world!) every single day, looking for the finest filet mignon of news stories to bring to you, our readers. Alas, our paltry few bloggers are nothing compared to your vast legions.

The link is small and sadly difficult to find; many readers have no idea it even exists. But check it out: in the column directly to the right of the main posts, under "Resources", is a small "Send us news tips" link. Use it! If you send us a hot story or interesting article, we'll <strike>bake you cookies</strike> credit you with the tip in the post and you'll be totally famous.
Wii Warm Up: Your sites of choice originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Mar 2007 09:00:00 EST. He REALLY loves two things; wine and the Wii. He doesn't just love them, either ... he is extremely charged up about both as we found out firsthand.

Gary runs a website called Wine Library, where he sells wine. He also runs a "vidcast" about wine called Wine Library TV, appropriately enough, where there are over 186 episodes (!) about wine. He's not some snobby "We serve no wine before its time" Orson Welles-ish character, instead he's a bit 'in yo face!' and Marv Albert about things. Of course, he's from New Jersey, so can you blame him?

However, what's even cooler (and of more interest to you, dear readers) is the latest site Gary has co-founded called WiiTube. It's meant to be a social site for Wii owners, with profiles containing Wii numbers, and also a spot for people to come to share tips and tricks. Can't beat a certain boss? Post about it on WiiTube, then someone can upload a video on the site showing how it's done.

The site is built around Opera and meant to look great with the Wii browser. They also collect the best Wii videos and game trailers from YouTube and link them all in one central location, so you don't have to go searching through YouTube on your own and sift through loads of spam vids and those bizarre Japanese entries that are impossible to read.

Gary and his team will be giving away Wiis through the site very soon, so you might want to head over and sign up if you're interested in something like, oh not much ... just a free Wii. Plus some Wii-centric goodness for your Wii browser.
Nintendo Wii mashed with YouTube = WiiTube originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 09:25:00 EST. We hear a lot about the Wii being great in social settings, but since it doesn't come preloaded with friends, we e-hermits remain alone in our (separate) caves.

Lucky for you, then, that some real party people are willing to help you plan your shindig: NextPath, a newsletter about student loans, has compiled a list of helpful household hints for your next college Wii party. Who would know more about partying than a corporation that finances student loans? Besides anyone else.

The list of suggestions, which was probably generated by a computer and then focus-tested on other, younger computers with Mountain Dew logos on them, includes among its 15 essentials things, stuff like Icy Hot, headbands, Ace bandages and eye protection. That makes their ideal event sound a lot more like the kind of party we'd plan, and not the kind of party that someone who is successful at making friends would even deign to attend (guys wearing #8 "Ankle Support" are certain to be a big hit with #2 "Ladies.")

We wonder if this kind of mainstream coverage of the Wii is indicative of a real cultural phenomenon, or if Nintendo marketing just helped finance a few student loans.

[Via NeoGAF]
Wii party tips from college finance site originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Feb 2007 10:00:00 EST. In citing that Kojima asked to have Snake involved in Super Smash Bros. Melee, the magazine says that the request was made too close to deadline, so they were unable to include him. Shiggy and Sakurai have said that they are close to including one other outside character, and commented that the most requested character is none other than Sega's mascot, and Mario's old rival, Sonic the Hedgehog.

Now, we've all heard about the April Fool's joke about Sonic being unlockable in SSBM, but with strong support of the new console from Sega with some launch title, one of which being an all-new Sonic adventure, we're inclined to say that this is likely to happen. Is the character they're in talks to include none other than the speedy, ring-obsessed Sonic?

[Via QJ; Thanks vidGuy!]
Sonic in the next Smash Bros. game? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Aug 2006 10:30:00 EST. Most of the time, everything goes swimmingly: an interesting link pops up, you let us know, and we write it up. Sometimes, it doesn't go so smoothly.

When we reject a tip, it may be because we've already reported on the story, or because the content of the tip isn't right for Joystiq. Other times, the rejected tip is dead wrong. Usually this is the fault of the source, not the tipster. Very often, rejected tips are also ones that, for whatever reason, make us laugh.

This post is dedicated to the tipsters behind the tips that we didn't use this week.

Continue reading Top five tips we turned down this week

Top five tips we turned down this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 25 Jun 2006 05:05:00 EST. Did I say gamer? I meant 11-year-old girl. Anyway, reader Andy has posted instructions on how to find the "hidden" unicorn in Elder ScrollsIV: Oblivion. See the map above for the exact location. According to Andy it will attack you if you stab it with asword.

That's where you come in. If you stumble acrossanything in your intarweb travels that makes you stop and say (out loud) to yourself, "Hey! Those nerds at Xbox360 Fanboy should have posted this forever ago," instead of waiting a couple months to see if we find itourselves, use our handy tips form and let us know!

If weuse your tip, we'll be sure to give you a shout-out. You can forward that post to your parents/significantother/imaginary friend (you choose) to prove that spending hours a day online trolling for 360 minutiae does pay off.Not in money of course, but in that warm feeling you get inside knowing that you've provided even more fodder for theslightly obsessed fanboys who stop here in their daily (or hourly) travels.

Thanks,

TheXbox 360 Fanboy crew
Tip us off (we're not omniscient... yet) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Mar 2006 15:00:00 EST.
